S1 Ep 313Three Things We Must Believe
It’s Self-Brain Surgery Saturday! Today I’m inviting you to a new life. It’s a life unfettered by the toxic cloud of hopelessness, anxiety, and trauma. It’s a life of being in control of the most sophisticated supercomputer in the history of the world, your own brain. I’m inviting you into the Society of Self-Brain Surgeons, where we learn together how to change our minds and change our lives, using a treatment plan based on neuroscience and faith. S1 Ep 312Max Lucado on Anxiety and Fear
In my life, when I’m stressed or worried, I always turn to the word of God. But when I need to talk to someone about these things, I talk to Lisa and to my chaplain or pastor. And God has blessed me with several pastors, chaplains, and writers in my life who are personal friends. But no matter where we’ve lived or worshiped, my go-to pastor is always our old friend Max Lucado. Max was my pastor when I lived in San Antonio, and my father-in-law Dennis worked at Oak Hills Church with Max. Today we’re going to visit with my friend, Max Lucado. The entire podcast archive is coming online for paid subscribers! There are at least two free episodes every week on Substack, along with the weekly free Self-Brain Surgery letter. Paid subscribers get new Mind Change Monday episodes weekly, the free episodes, and archived episodes every Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday! Max Lucado on Anxiety and Fear (This episode originally aired in 2020, in the height of the lockdowns of the Covid pandemic.) My wife Lisa has been great friends with Max’s wife Denalyn for many years. So, when Lisa and I got married Max became more than just a pastor to me. He’s a true friend, and, as you’ll hear in this episode, he’s been there for me in my worst moment after my son died. But Max isn’t just a pastor. He’s also a world-wide bestselling author of over 40 books. Max's books have sold over 100 million copies across 54 languages worldwide. But all that aside, despite his great success as a writer, Max is most at home in his role as a pastor. So, since this is a time of great anxiety and stress, I thought that the Dr. Lee Warren Podcast listeners like you (and me) needed a pastor. I reached out to Max, and he said he would be happy to come and minister to all of us today. When life is scary, there are things you can do to shake off the fear and step into faith, and Max Lucado is going to help us change our minds about it, starting today. S1 Ep 303Mind Change Monday: Don't Make it Worse
When We’re Wounded, We Can’t Un-injure Ourselves But once the injury, the massive thing, the painful event occurs, we need to understand that we CAN make it worse if we’re unaware of the concept of secondary injury. Here’s a good talk about how we can make things better through the power of self-brain surgery. This concept will help you: * Avoid having your painful event (loss, abuse, medical problem, financial issue, etc) become a generational problem in your family * Avoid having one problem create new ones (addiction, divorce, family strife) * Find hope and happiness again even after suffering “the massive thing” that life brings My new book comes out on July 25! It will help you process the massive things in your life, change your mind, and find the light again. Self-Brain Surgery with Dr. Lee Warren is a reader-supported publication. S1 Ep 302Self-Brain Surgery Saturday: Bleep That Out
Sometimes we need an editor. But what if we could learn to edit ourselves? What if we had an internal “red button” that would BLEEP our thoughts when they’re harmful, shaming, negative, labeling, or otherwise unhelpful to us? What if we could learn to place a 5-second pause between a feeling and a thought or between a thought and a reaction? We can! But it takes self-brain surgery. This episode is about worldview, self-editing, and how to change your mind. Substack recommendation: Joel Miller, Miller’s Book Review. Book Mentioned: Live No Lies by John Mark Comer Scripture: May these words of my mouth and this meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer. Psalm 19:14 NIV My new book is Hope is the First Dose: A Treatment Plan for Recovering from Trauma, Tragedy, and Other Massive Things (coming July 25). S1 Ep 301Good vs. Best, and Three Filters You Need
What areas in your life could use you working to increase your wisdom? Think about that, my friend, because which side of that oh-so-thin line between good and best you land on can make all the difference in whether you become healthier, feel better, and are happier in your life, your relationships, your business, and even your faith. S1 Ep 299Faithfully Different, with Natasha Crain
It’s Self-Brain Surgery Saturday! Today’s guest is author and acclaimed podcast host, Natasha Crain. Natasha Crain is a national speaker, author of four books, blogger, and podcaster who is passionate about equipping Christians to think more clearly about holding to a biblical worldview in the midst of an increasingly challenging secular culture. She has been featured on radio and TV shows across the U.S. and Canada, and lives in southern California with her husband and three children. She writes at natashacrain.com. Book introduction (from Amazon.com): Welcome to your place in a worldview minority. In an increasingly secular society, those who have a biblical worldview are now a shrinking minority. As mainstream culture grows more hostile toward the Bible’s truths and those who embrace them, you’ll face mounting pressures — from family, friends, media, academia, and government — to change and even abandon your beliefs. But these challenges also create abundant opportunities to stand strong for Christ and shine light to those hurt by the darkness of our day. In Faithfully Different, author and apologist Natasha Crain shares how you can live out your faith with conviction, discernment, and courage. You’ll be equipped to: * Identify and respond to today’s most significant worldview pressures, such as cancel culture, secular social justice, progressive Christianity, deconstruction, virtue signaling, and more. * Engage effectively with a world that ridicules biblical truths. * Defend your faith from misguided influences and live as a bold witness for the Lord. As the standards of our day mutate and devolve, Faithfully Different will give you the insight and encouragement you need to believe, think, and live biblically no matter what you face in these turbulent times. Check out the important Unchaken conference, hosted by Natasha Crain, Alisa Childers, and Frank Turek. Natasha’s podcast is powerful, and a great way to learn more about the Biblical worldview. When Life Brings Us Pain, We Have Two Choices (Note: I’m on a short sabbatical this week. This episode originally aired in June 2021. BUT- it’s perfect for Mind Change Monday!) When life brings us pain can either sit down with our hurt and let it define the rest of our life, or we can press into it and let God lead us through. Today we look at Exodus 20-34 and see that the path to finding the light again always starts in the darkness. Will you go there with me? S1 Ep 295Mind Change March 2023
It's Mind Change March! Hey, it’s almost March 1. We’re going to call it “Mind Change March,” and we’re going to make sure that every single day in this month, we’re going to press deeper into changing the things we need to change to get where we want to be in our lives. No more wasted time. No more regrets. 31 days from now we’ll be smarter, richer, wiser, fitter, closer to God and others, and we will be much better self-brain surgeons. I have a question for you: are you tired? I don’t mean sleepy. I mean, you’re looking around on social media and you see that everyone else seems to have it all together, but you can’t get a job or find your keys or the rent is due or your relationship is on the rocks. Or instead of having two of the best months ever to start 2021, you not only didn’t keep your resolutions, but you can’t even remember them. And you’re just so tired of it all? Like instead of Jump Start January and Fabulous February, you had “Just like last January,” and “Failed Again February?” Well, you’re not alone. I’m hearing a lot from people all over the place who are just so tired of being stuck and they don’t know how to change it. Guess what friend? It’s going to be okay. It’s mind change March, friend. And we’re going to start today. Scriptures from my friend Clay (you need to get you some promises too, friend!): Hebrews 6:18 God did this so that, by two unchangeable things in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled to take hold of the hope set before us may be greatly encouraged. Psalm 34:18 The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. Psalm 73:23-26 23 Yet I am always with you; you hold me by my right hand.24 You guide me with your counsel, and afterward you will take me into glory.25 Whom have I in heaven but you? And earth has nothing I desire besides you.26 My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. Lamentations 3:22-26 22 Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail.23 They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.24 I say to myself, “The Lord is my portion; therefore I will wait for him.” 25 The Lord is good to those whose hope is in him, to the one who seeks him;26 it is good to wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord. Proverbs 3:5-6 5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding;6 in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight. Isaiah 41:10 So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God.I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. You can now pre-order my new book, Hope is the First Dose: A Treatment Plan for Recovering from Trauma, Tragedy, and Other Massive Things! Other Scriptures Mentioned: Deuteronomy 6:1-9 These are the commands, decrees and laws the Lord your God directed me to teach you to observe in the land that you are crossing the Jordan to possess, 2 so that you, your children and their children after them may fear the Lord your God as long as you live by keeping all his decrees and commands that I give you, and so that you may enjoy long life. 3 Hear, Israel, and be careful to obey so that it may go well with you and that you may increase greatly in a land flowing with milk and honey, just as the Lord, the God of your ancestors, promised you. 4 Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.[a] 5 Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. 6 These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. 7 Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. 8 Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. 9 Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates. Micah 6:8 8 He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you?To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly[a] with your God. Romans 12:10 10 Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves. Malachi 3:10 10 Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,” says the Lord Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it. S1 Ep 293Reconstructed, with Philip Yancey (Self-Brain Surgery Saturday)
Philip Yancey has been a great friend and mentor for me for years. His books have helped millions of us search out the path to faith and hope again after life brings us pain. He’s one of the first people who gets a call when something terrible happens- Sandy Hook, Virginia Tech, Columbine- because he helps people honestly answer the questions such tragedies provoke, and to find hope again. Philip was recently diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease, a neurodegenerative disorder that causes a variety of issues with postural control, balance, steadiness and speed of movement, tremor, and other issues. And all those years of helping others look into their troubles and hold onto faith have prepared him for his own. This talk covers a lot of ground, from deconstruction to chronic illness, evil and suffering, church abuse, to finding strength in the community of the church. It’s inspiring, encouraging, and it will help you hold on, no matter what is happening in your life. Be sure to check out drleewarren.substack.com for more! My four all-time favorite Philip Yancey books: * Where the Light Fell: A Memoir is Philip’s intensely personal story of how he rebuilt his faith from the ashes of years of church abuse and the discovery of a family secret that devastated him. Incredible. I highly recommend the audiobook! * Where is God When it Hurts? * What’s So Amazing About Grace? * The Jesus I Never Knew You can now pre-order my new book, Hope is the First Dose: A Treatment Plan for Recovering from Trauma, Tragedy, and Other Massive Things! This Friday Conversation is a powerful and moving example of God’s relentless pursuit of us all. Join me for a great talk with Dr. Patti Giebink, a former abortion provider for Planned Parenthood who changed her life’s work after her encounter with Jesus. How does a pro-choice doctor who once performed abortions for Planned Parenthood wind up on the opposite side of this embattled issue? Dr. Patricia Giebink was overpowered by God’s perspective at a healing conference, becoming a pro-life advocate who repented before millions for doing abortions. As the author tells her emotional story, you will come away with a new understanding of the complexity of life, the risks of abortion, the power of prayer, and the greatness of God’s love and forgiveness - which is big enough to cover the pain of all affected by this controversial procedure. Unexpected Choice is told from the perspective of a doctor who actually performed abortions through Planned Parenthood. The book chronicles her journey from being a pro-choice physician to someone speaking on behalf of the pro-life movement.
