S8 Ep 35Sunday Dose of Hope: Don't Strive for Emotional Equipoise

When 10% Won’t Cut It, You Need Infinite Good morning my friend! Today’s dose of hope is three things you SHOULD NOT do after you experience trauma, tragedy, or other massive things (TMT’s). * Do not think that the goal is to get back to “how I used to feel.” It’s not possible. You’re changed by TMT, but you CAN learn to be happy again. It will be different, but it can also be beautiful. * Do not turn your pain into an idol that defines the rest of your life. * Do not put on a fake smile and pretend you’re okay. You need to heal. A good place to start the healing is to learn the treatment plan I teach you in my new book, Hope Is the First Dose. Today’s podcast is a great look at these three “don’t do’s” after TMT. Here’s a computer-generated transcript for those of you who don’t like to listen. Here’s a few fun things for you! You can now order tee shirts and other gear from the podcast and my books! Check out the store here: And we have a new YouVersion/Bible App 5-Day Bible Study available now! Finally, my new book is coming out on Tuesday, July 18! Two more days! You can pre-order Hope is the First Dose: A Treatment Plan for Recovering from Trauma, Tragedy, and Other Massive Things! Coming July 18 everywhere books are sold. There are major bonuses you can get by pre-ordering, including a great playlist of hopeful songs, three chapters of the book, lock screens for your phone, and more! It’s a fact, friend: life’s going to bring you trauma and tragedy and other massive things, but it’s also going to offer you hope, healing, and happiness. You can have both. And I’m going to teach you how. It’s not about equipoise, it’s about hope. The good news is, you can start today! Remember, friend: you can’t change your life until you change your mind. I’m here to remind you that there is a treatment plan. And hope is the first dose. Lisa and I are praying for you. Dum spiro spero (while I breathe, I hope), Lee W. S8 Ep 30Hope Talks: Dr. Jon Swanson

Sometimes, All You Need to Say Is, “This is Hard.” Today, a wonderful Hope Talk with my friend Dr. Jon Swanson. We talk about how we can be helpful when we’re coming alongside someone who is going through their own trauma, tragedy, or other massive thing. Check out Jon’s helpful writing at his Substack, This Is Hard. Jon Swanson helps people and organizations find sense at urgent and important times. Whether sitting at deathbeds with families or sitting over coffee with people needing counsel, Jon's experience allows him to find the words and silence that help meaning come to the surface. Once upon a time, Jon thought he would use his PhD in Rhetorical Theory and Criticism to teach college students how to analyze speeches. Instead, he has been helping people read the Bible for more than thirty years. In small groups and conversations, he tries to listen to the text, listen to people and connect the two in ways that are practical and often unexpected. Jon has been a communication prof, college administrator, and an associate pastor. Currently, he's a hospital chaplain and a consultant. He and Nancy have been married since 1983 and have two married children and a daughter in heaven. Jon and Nancy walk at least two miles a day, conversing the whole time. Jon has been blogging since 2005. In 2008, he started 300wordsaday.com, where he writes in simple language about following Jesus, 300 words at a time. S8 Ep 23Free to Take Hope

It’s Independence Day in the USA! Hi friend, and happy 4th of July! I hope you have a great day, filled with family, fun, and some rest. We will be repairing the sprinkler system as two very naughty German Shorthaired Pointers decided to dig up and chew through the entire soaker hose array in our flower bed. I also have a pile of last-minute assignments my publicist dropped on me yesterday, in preparation for my book launch in 14 days! Hope is the First Dose is coming to you quickly, and we believe it will be extremely helpful in learning to hold onto hope no matter what you’re facing. In case you have a few minutes of time to listen to a podcast today, here’s a replay for Infinitely Happier 14: The Science of Freedom, to give you some thoughts on the value of declaring your independence from things that are hurting your life. And for today’s daily dose of hope, here’s a letter I wrote a while back that might help you find hope in freedom! I hope you have a great day, and that you're off with your family doing something fun. I'm going to give you a short thought today; perhaps it will help today be more than just a holiday. July 4 is Independence Day in the United States. We celebrate our independence from Britain, earned with the heroism and blood of the earliest Americans. The men who wrote the Declaration of Independence and framed our constitution pledged their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor to establish this nation on the basis of freedom. And now, over two hundred years later, I want to encourage you, no matter where you live, to embrace freedom. The Founders of the USA knew that freedom wouldn't come easily. They knew they would have to fight for it, go to war for it, that some of them would give their lives for it.But being free was essential to them; they knew they couldn't continue to live under the oppression of the British king any longer. They had to make a change. And today, perhaps there is some area of your life in which you need freedom. The good news is, science is on your side. Below are several possible declarations you could make today. Each one has a link to something helpful. I hope you find them useful. Depressed? Take control of your thoughts. You have the freedom and the neurochemical power to speak into your own mind and make it better. Sometimes you need medical help, but the research is overwhelming that the biggest secret to feeling better is to decide you want to, and start behaving as if you already do. Emotion follows motion, and no matter how bad things seem to you, I promise that if you start moving toward the place you dream of being, soon after you'll notice that you're feeling better.Struggling financially? Today, declare that you will begin paying yourself first. No matter how impossible it seems, saving ten percent of what you earn is not only doable, but it's necessary if you're ever going to be financially free. You deserve to keep some of the money you work so hard for. The science of finance declares that living on ninety percent or less of your income is the clear path to security and freedom from financial worry. Remember that the Founders pledged their lives AND their fortunes? Imagine how the country would have fared if those early freedom-seekers had been financially irresponsible in their earlier years. They would have had no fortunes with which to help fund the fight for freedom. Having savings and investments creates the power to choose a different path. And that leads to freedom. Trapped in a body that isn't shaped the way you want or doesn't weigh what you want it to? Biochemistry promises you can change that too. But you have to make a declaration. Today, choose to move more than you sit, to consume less than you burn, to take one less sip or pill or bag of whatever it is that's enslaving you and keeping you stuck in a place you're not supposed to be. To be free, you have to decide, act, and press on even when it's hard. Whatever it is that's enslaving you, keeping you from being free, you can declare your independence from it today.Remember, though, that the declaration isn't the end of the matter. When the founders put pen to paper and declared themselves free, they still had a lot of work to do. Battles to fight. A war to win.And even after it was all over, it wasn't over, because the English weren't ready to quit. In the War of 1812, the British actually captured and burned Washington, DC; freedom isn't final unless you're willing to keep fighting for it. So today, amidst the fireworks and the hot dogs and the parades, take a moment to think about the things from which you might need independence. Make your declaration, and commit your life and your honor to making it real. Make July 4 your personal Independence Day. If you want to become healthier, feel better, and be happier, pull out your pen and sign your name to the declaration. The Founders reached a point where they were no longer willing to live with the way things were. Freedom

S8 Ep 16Reconstructed, with Philip Yancey

Philip Yancey has been a great friend and mentor for me for years. (Replay of Season 7, Episode 40) Getting to talk to Richard Foster last week made me think of my friend Philip Yancey, and how our last talk on the podcast was so inspiring. I thought I’d bring this great talk back to you today as a bookend to the Richard Foster episode. Philip’s books have helped millions of us search out the path to faith and hope again after life brings us pain. He’s one of the first people who gets a call when something terrible happens- Sandy Hook, Virginia Tech, Columbine- because he helps people honestly answer the questions such tragedies provoke, and to find hope again. Philip was recently diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease, a neurodegenerative disorder that causes a variety of issues with postural control, balance, steadiness and speed of movement, tremor, and other issues. And all those years of helping others look into their troubles and hold onto faith have prepared him for his own. This talk covers a lot of ground, from deconstruction to chronic illness, evil and suffering, church abuse, to finding strength in the community of the church. It’s inspiring, encouraging, and it will help you hold on, no matter what is happening in your life. Be sure to check out drleewarren.substack.com for more! My four all-time favorite Philip Yancey books: * Where the Light Fell: A Memoir is Philip’s intensely personal story of how he rebuilt his faith from the ashes of years of church abuse and the discovery of a family secret that devastated him. Incredible. I highly recommend the audiobook! * Where is God When it Hurts? * What’s So Amazing About Grace? * The Jesus I Never Knew You can now pre-order my new book, Hope is the First Dose: A Treatment Plan for Recovering from Trauma, Tragedy, and Other Massive Things! Scriptures Mentioned Proverbs 10:19 (AMP) When there are many words, transgression and offense are unavoidable, But he who controls his lips and keeps thoughtful silence is wise. Proverbs 11:9 “Evil words destroy one’s friends; wise discernment rescues the godly. Proverbs 15:4 “Gentle words bring life and health; a deceitful tongue crushes the spirit.” Proverbs 16:24 “Kind words are like honey – sweet to the soul and healthy for the body.” Proverbs 18:21 “Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit.” Proverbs 18:4 “A person’s words can be life-giving water; words of true wisdom are as refreshing as a bubbling brook.” Proverbs 12:18 “There is one who speaks rashly like he thrusts of a sword, but the tongue of the wise brings healing.” Proverbs 25:18 “Telling lies about others is as harmful as hitting them with an ax, wounding them with a sword, or shooting them with a sharp arrow.” Luke 6:43-45 “For there is no good tree which produces bad fruit, nor, on the other hand, a bad tree which produces good fruit. For each tree is known by its own fruit. For men do not gather figs from thorns, nor do they pick grapes from a briar bush. The good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth what is good; and the evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth what is evil; for his mouth speaks from that which fills his heart.” Proverbs 21:23 “Whosoever keeps his mouth and his tongue keeps himself out of trouble.” James 3:5 “In the same way, the tongue is a small thing that makes grand speeches. But a tiny spark can set a great forest on fire.” James 1:26 “If you claim to be religious but don’t control your tongue, you are fooling yourself, and your religion is worthless.” Proverbs 17:18 “Even a fool who keeps silent is considered wise; when he closes his lips, he is deemed intelligent.” Psalm 119:105 “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” Matthew 24:35 “Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.” Romans 14:12 “So then each one of us will give an account of himself to God.” Matthew 12:36 “But I tell you that every careless word that people speak, they shall give an account for it in the day of judgement.” Great article with all these verses and more, by Ashley Evans Hey, my new book is releasing July 18! Steve Laufmann is a speaker, author, computer scientist, and consultant in the design of enterprise-class systems, with expertise in the difficulties of changing complex systems to perform new tasks. He leads the Engineering Research Group at Discovery Institute and chaired the program committee for the 2021 Conference on Engineering in Living Systems. Dr. Howard Glicksman is a general practitioner with more than forty years of medical experience in office and hospital settings, who now serves as a hospice physician seeing terminally ill patients in their homes. S8 Ep 11Hope is an Action Word

You can’t wait for hope to happen. You can make it happen. Hope is a verb: there’s two consistent things about biblical examples of when people feel hopeless, and what they do next, that are important to flesh out: Any time we’re faced with a seemingly hopeless situation, there’s movement and there’s memory. There’s action. There’s a choice made. You have to fight for hope, friend, because life doesn’t always make it easy. We’re going to learn how hope is a verb, an action word, and we’re going to start today. Hey, my new book is releasing July 18! Click on the book cover below to pre-order. S8 Ep 8Good Father

Father’s Day is Difficult for Some People If you have pain around the idea of God being a father because of your relationship with your biological dad, you need to hear some true things today. I'm going to share with you a love letter, a message from God directly from his Word, just for you. (Adapted from YST069). And the bottom line of the message is this: You're special, and today is the day it's going to start being better. (Note: The following is a letter, composed by God through the writers of the Bible. I have extracted these scriptures and listed them out below.) My dear, beloved friend, my child, I wanted to reach out to you, across time and space, to let you know how much I love you. I think about you all the time. Did you know you're the apple of my eye? (Psalm 17:8) I know things are hard sometimes. But you're not alone. I'm always paying attention to you as you journey through your life. In fact, I feel your pain, and I keep all your tears in a little jar; so you're never far from the front of my mind, sweet friend. (Psalm 56:8) I want you to know how special you are to me. Life on earth has a way of making you feel unimportant, lost, or overlooked. And our Enemy goes around like a lion, trying to hurt you. (I Peter 5:8) He wants you to believe that the things you've done have separated you from me, that you're too far gone for me to love you or accept you. But that's a lie. In fact, everything he says is a lie and you shouldn't believe a word of it. (John 8:44) But here's the truth: I created you, breathed my life into you, and made you in my own image. (Genesis 2:7, Genesis 1:27). And I've been paying attention to you from eternity before you were born right up until this very moment. I knit you together with special care, I saw you inside your mother, and I know the whole story of your life (Psalm 139). So you see, precious child, you matter to me. So don't worry so much, because I'm watching you. I've got your back. I know every hair on your head (Matthew 10:30), and I think you're awesome and perfect, because I made you just as I planned, just as I wanted, and making a person is a wonderful process. And no one is more wonderfully made in my image than you are (Psalm 139:14). Now, I know life is hard. And I know there are things that hurt. But in the midst of that pain, don't let life's troubles make you feel like I'm far away. Because when you're the most scared or in the most pain, that's when I want to be closest to you (Psalm 34:18). There are a lot of voices in your head, I know. Your brain is wired to think about things that hurt or scare you automatically. I made you that way, and it's for your own good, to keep you safe. But that negative bias in your brain can also harm you and steal your joy if you aren't careful. So it's important to remember that I made you to be joyful, and to have a fulfilled, abundant life (John 10:10). And even though those voices are hardwired, you can overcome them by listening for mine. I'll tell you how to hear me. First, my voice won't ever make you ashamed or afraid. Even when I correct you or my spirit convicts you of something you need to change or confess, it will come with a promise to help you, and you'll have a deep sense that my way is better than the way you've been doing things (John 16:8-16). And, everything I tell you will be true. And I won't ever change my words to you, because I'm the same yesterday and today and forever (Hebrews 13:8). So here's what I want you to do: in the midst of all the pain and the worry and the uncertainty of your life, start listening for my voice. Filter every voice that's scary, that makes you feel bad. Every voice that tells you you're not good enough or not smart enough or pretty enough or anything enough to succeed or for me to love you. Because, my friend, you're exactly who and where and what I intended for you to be (Acts 17:26). And there is nothing you cannot overcome or accomplish if you use the power of me living inside you (Philippians 4:13). Look, you're going to make mistakes, and you're never going to measure up to the perfect life of my son Jesus. But that's because he's the one-and-only (John 1:14). And guess what? I loved you so much that I sent him to save you (John 3:16-17). He didn't come to judge you- that's my job anyway- he came to save you. And if you're good enough for him, you're good enough for me. Let's settle this right now. I've forgiven you, from eternity before you were born, for everything you have done or will do. I've removed your sins as far away as the East is from the West (Psalm 103:12). And even though life and the world and your enemy can make you feel irredeemable or dirty, I've washed you white as snow if you believe in my son Jesus (Isaiah 1:18, Romans 10:18). Here's the last thing I want to tell you, my beloved: I'll never stop loving you. I can't. I've got your name tattooed on the palm of my hand (Isaiah 49:16). No one can take you from the safety of my arms and the

S7 Ep 100Dr. Derwin Gray is Full of Hope

Derwin Gray is a Living Example of Transformation Join me for an incredible conversation with Dr. Derwin Gray, a former NFL player whose life was completely transformed by Jesus. He is inspiring, brilliant, and a powerful example of what happens when you find out who Jesus really is. Derwin is a thought leader, incredible speaker and writer, pastor of one of American’s fastest growing churches, and an all around fascinating and inspiring person. You’re going to be challenged by this talk, and Derwin actually made me cry, twice, on my own podcast. I’m so honored to be able to introduce you to our new friend, Dr. Derwin Gray. About Dr. Gray After graduating from Brigham Young University, Derwin played professional football in the NFL for five years with the Indianapolis Colts (1993-1997) and one year with the Carolina Panthers (1998). During that time, he and Vicki began their journey with Christ and experienced God’s faithfulness and direction as He moved their hearts to know Him and make Him known. Derwin and Vicki began an itinerant speaking ministry in 1999, One Heart At A Time Ministries. Derwin went on to graduate magna cum laude from Southern Evangelical Seminary with a Master of Divinity (M.Div.) degree, with a concentration in Apologetics, where he was mentored by renowned theologian and philosopher, Dr. Norman Geisler. Following God’s call on their lives and their desire to shepherd people towards transforming their world through the mission of Christ, the Lord transitioned Derwin from his primary role of itinerant speaker to serving as the Lead Pastor of Transformation Church in January of 2010. Coupling his dynamic speaking style with a shepherd’s heart, his intense passion for seeing lives and culture transformed is both contagious and inspiring. In 2015, he was awarded an honorary doctorate from Southern Evangelical Seminary. In 2018, he received his Doctor of Ministry in the New Testament in Context at Northern Seminary under Dr. Scot McNight. In addition to his role at Transformation Church, Derwin teaches at conferences nationwide. He is the author of Hero: Unleashing God’s Power in a Man’s Heart (2010), Limitless Life: You Are More Than Your Past When God Holds Your Future (2013), Crazy Grace for Crazy Times Bible Study (2015), The Good Life: What Jesus Teaches About Finding True Happiness (2020), Building a Multiethnic Church (2021), God, Do You Hear Me? (2021), and How to Heal the Racial Divide (2022). Derwin also starred in the hilarious YouTube video called “The Evangelism Linebacker.”

S7 Ep 89Hope Talks #2: Traci Rhoades Leads Us from Shaky Ground

When life seems out of control, how do we find solid ground again? Traci Rhoades is an author, speaker, and social media spiritual influencer from Michigan. She joins me today for an inspiring Hope Talk to discuss what to do when we find our lives on shaky ground. Traci has a great Substack letter, which I highly recommend, and I love her website and Twitter account. She has much to teach us about the church, spiritual disciplines (her writing reminds me of Richard Foster), and how to hold on during hard times. Her books are Not All Who Wander (Spiritually) Are Lost: A Story of Church, and Shaky Ground: What to Do After the Bottom Drops Out. This was a great talk, and I’m excited to introduce you to a new friend today. She was so kind to read my new book and is one of my inside-the-jacket endorsers. When the Unimaginable Happens, What Next? Clarissa Moll was a wife and mother of four young children when The Massive Thing (TMT) showed up. Her husband Rob, an author and avid hiker, fell to his death during a morning hike with a friend. Clarissa was faced not only with TMT of losing her husband, but also thrust into many new roles WHILE she was facing grief and what she calls “the darkness” that it brought into her world. Clarissa was on the podcast once before (Season 6, Episode 48). You can hear that conversation by clicking the button below. Clarissa’s book is Beyond the Darkness: A Gentle Guide for Walking with Grief and Thriving After Loss. I consider it a must-read, and I HIGHLY recommend you listen to her narration in the audiobook. S1 Ep 345Take it or Leave It: Making Hard Choices

Life is a Series of Hobson's Choices (Adapted from Season 4, Episode 89) Hobson's choice A Hobson's choice is a free choice in which only one thing is offered. Because a person may refuse to accept what is offered, the two options are taking it or taking nothing. In other words, one may "take it or leave it".Wikipedia There are some things you need to settle if you’re going to be happy. What are those for you? Write them down. Start praying for peace around them. Start clarifying the true things in your life, and disavow yourself from the notion that you need to have a pain-free life in order to be happy. The degree to which you couple emotion and circumstance in your life is inversely proportional to your ability to be happy. And what kills us, is the unwillingness to accept the quantum duality that life is hard and we can be happy anyway. We focus on the but and the and and the woe and the oh no and we forget the tho and yet. Scriptures Mentioned John 16:33 “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” John 10:10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full. Mark 9:28-29 After Jesus had gone indoors, his disciples asked him privately, “Why couldn’t we drive it out?” 29 He replied, “This kind can come out only by prayer. Luke 18:1 Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up. Matthew 5:30 And if your right hand causes you to stumble, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to go into hell. Hebrews 12:1-4 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, 2 fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. 3 Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart. 4 In your struggle against sin, you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood. Romans 8:28 And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. Psalm 34:18 The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. S1 Ep 343How to Live While You're Living

A Lesson About “Promised Land Problems” (Adapted from Season 4, Episode 83) What if I told you that you could take a two-week trip and make it last forty years? What if I told you that you could spend your whole life chasing something in your future, or running from in your past and miss everything good you could have right now? And what if I told you that you could live in a version of what you really want because you think you have arrived, but you really wind up never getting the great life you were designed for, just because you never learned to wait for it? These are all tragic examples of something I call Promised Land Problems, and today we're going to learn how to avoid them. If we don't solve the Promised Land problems in our lives, we end up wasting our days, wandering in a desert version of what we were meant for, and die in the wasteland of an unfulfilled, unsuccessful, unrewarding life. I want to enjoy my life now, I want to make the best decisions I can make so I wind up where God intends me to be, and I don't want to make all kinds of detours and missteps along the way. I'm betting you want those things too. Hang out with me for a few minutes, because this episode could save your life. I have noticed four types of what I call Promised Land Problems we can learn from this story that apply to all of us today.
