The Holy Grail of Work-Life Balance with James Sudakow

Is work-life balance an unattainable myth? Most of us have tried everything to find out a way to evenly distribute our time and energy across work, life, and family. Many of us may have also discovered that this is one of the most difficult things to achieve. It almost seems impossible. But it's not. Today's guest is James Sudakow. He is the father of four kids and the author of Out of the Blur: A Delirious Dad's Search for the Holy Grail of Work-Life Balance. He used to suffer from superhero syndrome, trying to be everything to everyone all the time. Eventually, he realized that he wasn't showing up in the way that he wanted to at home or at work and came up with his own plan to analyze his behavior and change his ways. In this episode, James Sudakow talks about the superhero syndrome and outlines the common traps we fall into when it comes to prioritizing our to do list. He gives practical solutions for breaking common habits that suck our time and energy and shows us that a sane, productive, fulfilling life is not as mysterious as we think. Behold, the holy grail of work life balance! Protecting Your Family from Gaming Addiction with Cam Adair

We are just beginning to understand the impact of video games on child development and behavior. Never has our culture been so immersed in gamification. Games like Minecraft and Fortnite have become part of social culture. The American Academy of Pediatrics has documented that violent videos games cause children to show a greater propensity to be aggressive in real life. Frequent gaming also results in poor grades and a difficult relationship with parents. So how can we protect our family from gaming addiction? Today we are grateful to have Cam Adair from GameQuitters.com back on The Dad Edge. He is a former gaming addict who now helps kids and their parents find solutions for gaming addiction. He tells us how we can set healthy limits and boundaries around video games, and what activities we can implement into our daily lives to make sure our kids are fulfilled and less susceptible to compulsive gaming. How to Get Anything You Want with Tony Stephan

Ben Killoy is a veteran and the host of the Military Veteran Dad Podcast and his mission is to bring every dad home. We're not just talking about being physically home. The normal world continues while they're deployed, and their families learn to live without them. Once military dads return home, they lose their uniform and go from being Superman to Clark Kent overnight. It's a huge adjustment that can leave a soldier lost as to who he is and wondering how to become part of his family, workplace, and community again. The Ultimate Personal Development Event for Dads

Today I'm joined by my two facilitators for The Dad Edge Summit live event, Jason MacKenzie and Jeff Bouwman. We recorded this episode live in The Dad Edge Mastermind community. The men online were not only able to listen but also interact with us on the podcast. There are five dimensions of manhood. They are health (mental, physical, emotional, spiritual), work, our relationship with our spouse, our relationship with our children, and finances. In this live Q&A, we go through how we approached each dimension of manhood in last year's Dad Edge Summit and how we will approach them in this year's summit using techniques like appreciative inquiry, group exercises, and visualization. At most personal development events, we are part of an audience. We sit and listen to speakers, but The Dad Edge Summit is different. It's active, not passive. The intimate setting allows for deep self-exploration and fosters breakthroughs that change the lives of the participants. Get Lit: Forget the Pressure to Find Your Why with Dominick Quartuccio

E

Today there is so much pressure to find our why, to have a clear purpose in life. Some people seem to have it all figured out. We see them on social media living their dreams. Others think they know what they were meant to be, only to find out they're unfulfilled. Those of us who haven't defined a clear purpose yet seem to be looked down on (or maybe we just feel that way). Today's guest tells us why you need to forget the pressure to find your why and how to let it reveal itself to you. Dominick Quartuccio, bestselling author of Design Your Future: 3 Simple Steps to Stop Drifting and Take Command of Your Life, is back on The Dad Edge. He says that in looking too hard for our purpose in life, it eludes us. Most people don't know what their destiny is, and that's okay. He teaches us how to analyze our lives to become aware of what lights us up, and how to follow that passion to create a life that excites us. The Secrets to Achieving Wildly Important Goals with Mark Divine

At the start of the year, we are always thinking about goals like losing extra weight, eating healthier, and managing our finances more efficiently, but what about wildly important goals? Have you ever set a goal so challenging that it takes you beyond your limits and changes you forever? Today's guest is Mark Divine. He is a former Navy SEAL commander, founder of SEALfit, and author of The Unbeatable Mind. His book was the inspiration for The Dad Edge and he was the first big guest on the show. Mark Divine just completed a burpee challenge to raise money and awareness for veteran suicides, which occur at the horrifying rate of every 22 seconds. This wasn't a one-time event, but a year-long commitment of doing 300 burpees every single day. Mark talks about how he pulls through and even thrives on these kinds of challenges. It's not all grit. He uses breathing techniques, yoga, meditation, and intuition. You will be awed by the insights he shares in this interview. Breaking the Chain of Bad Fathering

E

Being a dad is the toughest and most important job in the world. For those of us who didn't have a good dad to learn from, it's even more difficult to navigate life. We didn't have a proper role model, leaving us without a map to become a good husband and father. But breaking the chain of bad fathering is complex. Sometimes, no matter how hard we try, we see ourselves falling into the same behaviors we watched as a kid. We feel hopeless and infuriated. There were no resources for men in previous generations, but we're going to change that. The mission of the Dad Edge is to empower fathers to be their best. Today, we have a Dad Edge Alliance member on the show to talk about his experience being raised by a violent dad. He vowed not to become like his father, but he fell into the same patterns after his own son was born. He knew he had to stop the cycle for the sake of his son. Listen to how he learned to grow beyond his upbringing to become a happy, confident, and resilient man. Today we have Dr. Corey Allan on the show. He is a marriage and family therapist and the host of the Sexy Marriage Radio podcast, which has been going strong for seven years. Dr. Allan outlines most common problems couples bring to his office, including sex. In this conversation, we get granular about sex issues along with intimacy and pornography. In his experience, Dr. Corey Allan estimates that that man has the higher desire for sex in 70% of marriages, but men tend to follow a script and don't get creative with their wives. Doing Life with The Dad Edge

This is the final episode of Thursday Throwdown for 2018. This was the most successful year yet for The Dad Edge Podcast and The Dad Edge Alliance. We organized our first ever Dad Edge Summit. Thank you all for doing life with The Dad Edge! We are going to bring you more amazing guests, content, and resources in 2019 to help you become your best self. We've seen men lose 100 pounds, save hopeless marriages, and rekindle connections with kids. Some guys have quit the jobs they hated to create businesses they love. Others have climbed out of impossible debt. How did they do it? By surrounding themselves with dynamic people, by having support from a group of likeminded men, and by being held accountable for their goals. Is 2019 going to be the year you make things happen? The Cure for Lone Wolf Syndrome

E

On Thursday Throwdown, we interview everyday dads. Today, alliance member John Williams is on the show. John used to suffer from lone wolf syndrome. He shouldered his burdens alone and kept his worries to himself. Even though he arrived at a good place in life, something was missing. He knew that a man is the sum of the people closest to him and that he was capable of more. This sparked the search for a tribe to surround himself with. A rising tide lifts all ships, and by doing life with good men, John has stopped drifting and is now actively shaping his destiny. His wife Ashley also makes a surprise appearance and gives us the lowdown on the changes she has seen in John since he's had men to share the highs and lows with.
