S12 Ep 93S12 Ep93: Stage 6 | Remiremont - Morteau | Tour de France Femmes 2024
Join Rose Manley and Denny Gray at the Tour de France Femmes as they discuss a stage which saw several jerseys change hands. It was also a stage that brought up questions about the GC potential of several contenders ahead of the upcoming high mountain stages.Plus we look ahead to the battle for the yellow jersey which comes to a head this weekend and of course, talk about that other important yellow thing, cheese.Follow us on social media:Twitter @cycling_podcastInstagram @thecyclingpodcastThe 11.01 CappuccinoOur regular email newsletter is now on Substack. S12 Ep 92S12 Ep92: Vinos de la Vuelta
WARNING: EPISODE CONTAINS VERY LITTLE CYCLING CHAT!Our Vuelta coverage started earlier this week with a pre-race KM0 very much inspired by this year’s Portuguese ‘Gran Salida’, plus our usual XL Preview episode - and the build-up continues with our now traditional wine-lover’s guide to the route. As usual, Dvine Cellars have put together a case designed to take your taste buds where the peloton will ride over the next three weeks. On Thursday, before flying to Lisbon, Daniel also headed to Dvine's London HQ for some, ahem, vital last minute prep - and below you can hear his conversation with our and Dvine’s resident guru of the grapes (or maybe “Sultan of Smashability”??), Greg Andrews.UK residents can order the Vuelta selection here -https://dvinecellars.com/products/the-cycling-podcast-la-vuelta-24 - while overseas listeners should glean enough from Daniel’s chat with Greg to assemble their own approximation. S12 Ep 91S12 Ep91: Stage 5 | Bastogne - Amnéville | Tour de France Femmes 2024
Join Rose Manley and Denny Gray as they unpick a drama filled Stage 5 at the Tour de France Femmes. We find out what happened out on the road after the yellow jersey changed hands during a stage that had been originally classified as ‘flat’ and ponder on what this huge upset in the standings might mean for the final GC. Plus we hear from the Swinkels sisters - Karlijn and Sylvie - who are racing together, or rather against each other at the Tour de France Femmes for the first time. And even two closed fromageries can’t stop Denny on his quest to find more cheese at the race.

S12 Ep 90S12 Ep90: Stage 4 | Valkenburg - Liège | Tour de France Femmes 2024
Join Rose Manley and Denny Gray as their European road-trip aka the Tour de France Femmes continues into Belgium. In typical Belgian style stage 4 offered punchy hills, aggressive racing and pouring rain on a parcours that combined climbs from two Ardennes Classics - the Amstel Gold Race and Liege-Bastogne-Liege. With plenty of Classics specialists among the GC contenders the stage certainly offered much to talk about. Plus, Denny’s adventures in fromage continued and so did the ongoing all-important debate over whether Belgium should be classed as a “cheese country”.

S12 Ep 89S12 Ep89: Stage 2 & 3 | Dordrecht - Rotterdam, Rotterdam ITT | Tour de France Femmes 2024
Join Rose Manley and Denny Gray at the conclusion of a rare double stage at the Tour de France Femmes which included a ferocious sprint and a vital individual time trial. We speak to riders about how they dealt with the double stage - a feature which hasn’t occurred at the Tour de France since 1991. We also hear from the likes of Anna van der Breggen and Kasia Niewiadoma about the stage 3 time trial which might prove vital in the GC battle.Plus of course, we continue Denny’s quest to find more delicious local cheese and discuss which riders are worthy of the ‘Big Cheese’ title. In this week’s special preview of the 2024 Vuelta a España, Daniel Friebe is joined by two of the guests who’ll also feature in our daily Vuelta podcasts over the next three weeks, Fran Reyes & Rob Hatch.First, there’s a round-up of the major headlines since our last episode. It’s then time to slip into Vuelta mode, first as we discuss the riders, then the route on which they’ll do battle.Three-time champion Primož Roglič has already won his race to get fit in time for the Gran Salida…& Daniel speaks to his DS, Rolf Aldag, about how he did it. We also discuss some of the other talking points, like Sepp Kuss’s chances of defending his 2023 crown & the UAE multi-headed monster. S12 Ep 87S12 Ep87: Stage 1 | Rotterdam - Den Haag | Tour de France Femmes 2024
Join Rose Manley and Denny Gray on a sweltering stage 1 at the Tour de France Femmes as they bring you the first of their daily episodes from the race. What looked like a straightforward sprint turned out to be anything but as the riders headed from Rotterdam to Den Haag. Emotions were as high as the temperatures as the riders battled it out for the first yellow jersey of 2024.Follow us on social media:Twitter @cycling_podcastInstagram @thecyclingpodcastThe 11.01 CappuccinoOur regular email newsletter is now on Substack. S12 Ep 86S12 Ep86: Tour de France Femmes Preview
The Cycling Podcast Féminin has everything you need to know about what has quickly become the biggest race in women’s cycling - the Tour de France Femmes. Rose Manley and Denny Gray take a close look at the eight stages that will take the riders from Rotterdam to the Alps across a week of racing.Special attention is paid to the upcoming Queen stage in our mini feature on Alpe d’Huez. While the men’s peloton have visited the iconic climb 31 times at the Tour, the women last raced there over 30 years ago during the Tour Feminin. We investigate the origins of the Alpe’s legend and speak to some female racers who have competed there in the past.Plus Rose and Denny weigh up who might be the biggest contenders for the fabled yellow jersey. While Demi Vollering has looked unbeatable across this year’s stage races, she lines up at the Tour with a somewhat depleted SD Worx team who are missing some of their strongest domestiques. Meanwhile Kasia Niewiadoma has enjoyed something of a resurgence this year, supported by a Canyon-SRAM squad which continues to discover new depths. Plus no-one can discount Giro d’Italia winner Elisa Longo Borghini, looking to make it a Giro-Tour double. And while the racing is highly anticipated, so too are the cheese possibilities as Rose and Denny prepare to embark on their own Tour de France, where they will be doing daily podcasts on-the-ground, beginning on 12th August.Follow us on social media:Twitter @cycling_podcastInstagram @thecyclingpodcastThe 11.01 CappuccinoOur regular email newsletter is now on Substack. S12 Ep 85S12 Ep85: Arrivée | Women's Olympic Road Race
In this Arrivée episode from The Cycling Podcast Féminin, Rose Manley and The British Continental’s Denny Gray take a closer look at the women’s Olympic road race. With spectacular views, an iconic Eiffel Tower finish and a punchy parcours, the race promised to be one to remember. A number of hot favourites led the field. Lotte Kopecky, the Belgian superstar who has made no secret of her Olympic ambitions faced the likes of Team SD Worx teammates Demi Vollering and Lorena Wiebes - part of a Dutch team stacked with talent. But this is the Olympics and riders would do well to remember Anna Kiesenhofer’s surprise win in Tokyo. The win really could come from anywhere. S12 Ep 84S12 Ep84: Arrivée | Men's Olympic Road Race
In this episode of Arrivée, Daniel Friebe and Décathlon-AG2R La Mondiale ace Larry Warbasse reflect on a memorable men’s Olympic road race in Paris.A 272km race with just 90 starters promised to be a gruelling affair - and certainly a spectacular one with its three ascents of the Butte de Montmartre to one of Paris’s most famous landmarks, the Basilique du Sacré-Cœur. Could Mathieu van der Poel justify his favourite’s billing after a low-key Tour de France - or would his eternal rival, Wout Van Aert form a deadly duo with countryman and newly crowned Olympic TT champ Remco Evenepoel? These and other questions were answered on Saturday afternoon - and Daniel and Larry review what we found out here.Follow us on social media:Twitter @cycling_podcastInstagram @thecyclingpodcastThe 11.01 CappuccinoOur regular email newsletter is now on Substack. S12 Ep 77S12 Ep77: Don't Call It A Comeback
We’re dragging listeners back to Italy as The Cycling Podcast Féminin tackles the Giro d’Italia Women, which was won in spectacular fashion by Elisa Longo Borghini. Rose Manley is joined by Denny Gray and special guest ex-Olympian Joanna Rowsell to pull out all the biggest headlines from the race. For our mini feature, we use the anticipated return of Anna van der Breggen to the women’s peloton as a springboard to find out what it takes to retire from racing and come back. Rose speaks to Ruth Edwards née Winder who retired in the same year as Van der Breggen only to return this season in flying form, already claiming a title in Thüringen and two podium finishes at the Giro.Edwards’ breakthrough wasn’t the only story of the race as the second Grand Tour of the women’s calendar proved to be every bit as thrilling and hard-fought as it had promised. We witnessed the birth of a new rivalry between eventual winner Elisa Longo Borghini and all-round superstar Lotte Kopecky who trailed the Italian by only one second going into the final day. There was plenty of interest elsewhere as well with seven different teams sharing the stage victories at the race and the emergence of some new names to the roll of honour.Follow us on social media:Twitter @cycling_podcastInstagram @thecyclingpodcastThe 11.01 CappuccinoOur regular email newsletter is now on Substack. S12 Ep 60S12 Ep60: Dear Diary
In this month’s episode of Féminin, Rose Manley, Denny Gray and Orla Chennaoui cast their eyes over recent racing at the Tour de Suisse and come dangerously close to speculation as they ponder what it might mean for the year’s biggest races and beyond. Demi Vollering’s winning run shows no signs of letting up after taking three stages and the overall win at the Tour de Suisse. But how much could her expected departure from SD Worx at the end of the season stifle her ambitions? And who are her likely rivals? Plus, this month’s mini feature follows four riders and their changing fortunes at the Tour of Britain Women. We hand the microphone over to SD Worx super domestique Christine Majerus, DSM-firmenich road captain Pfeiffer Georgi, youngest rider in the race Eilidh Shaw and Lucy Harris, a full time meteorological data scientist competing at her first ever WWT race. And lastly we look ahead to the forthcoming women’s Giro d’Italia which hasn’t been won by anyone other than Anna van der Breggen or Annemiek Van Vleuten since 2016. The route boasting time trials, sprints, hilly stages and a fearsome finish on Blockhaus, and with Demi Vollering not starting, we look at who might be capable of winning the maglia rosa. We discuss emerging talents Neve Bradbury and Kim Cadzow and Lidl-Trek’s joint leaders of Elisa Longo Borghini and Gaia Realini. S12 Ep 56S12 Ep56: Girovagando 2024: The Highlights
The Giro d’Italia that ended last weekend was the ninth The Cycling Podcast has covered on the ground, in full, with daily episodes from every stage. Over that near decade, it’s fair to say that our love of the ‘Corsa Rosa’ and its host nation has deepened and broadened with every edition. Daniel Friebe was initially nonplussed with the route unveiled last autumn - thinking it lacked sporting uncertainty and both historical and topographical showpieces - but the journey from Turin to Rome ended up both reviving old loves, revealing new ones and providing a compelling canvas for the racing itself, for all that Tadej Pogačar robbed the General Classification contest of any suspense. In this podcast, you’ll hear some of Daniel’s personal highlights from road trip he shared with Brian Nygaard - and to which you, as listeners were vicariously invited, down and up ‘The Bel Paese’, on and off-course, hopefully into the soul of the Giro d’Italia. S12 Ep 52S12 Ep52: Better Late Than Never
In the May episode of The Cycling Podcast Féminin, Rose Manley, Denny Gray and Rebecca Charlton look back over the recent Spanish stage racing from the comfort of their own cabaña.Questions may have hung over Demi Vollering’s form after a consistent if lacklustre run in the Spring Classics, but the SD Worx rider answered in no uncertain manner with three dominant performances across the Vuelta Femenina, Itzulia Women and Vuelta a Burgos. Some unexpected rivals emerged though, most notably Evita Muzic who is priming herself to be France’s great hope at this year’s Tour de France Femmes. The team also discuss a huge comeback win for Lotta Henttala at the Vuelta a Burgos, her first victory in over five years after struggles with both her physical and mental health. This month’s feature visits the topic of latecomers to the sport. These are riders who make the jump from regular jobs to elite racing careers in their late 20s and 30s. We hear from Jayco-Alula’s Mavi Garcia, Movistar’s Mareille Meijering and Coop-Repsol’s Monica Greenwood about their journeys into cycling and the peculiar life lessons they’ve learned along the way.Follow us on social media:Twitter @cycling_podcastInstagram @thecyclingpodcastThe 11.01 CappuccinoOur regular email newsletter is now on Substack. For the past 10 months, Lizzy Banks has been fighting to clear her name after an anti-doping test taken in May 2023 returned an adverse analytical finding for two substances. She was informed of the test result 79 days later. The two substances were formoterol, a medication she'd been using within the permitted level to treat asthma. The second, chlortalidone, was a diuretic she had never heard of. Unless she could prove contamination the twice Giro stage winner faced a two-year suspension. Her investigation cost her career, her life savings and took a huge emotional toll on her and her family. When she could no longer afford full legal support, she investigated the case herself. Her medical training helped and the case she compiled led the UK Anti-Doping Agency (UKAD) to drop a scheduled tribunal and return a verdict of no fault, no negligence and no suspension. Nevertheless, the rules state she has four anti-doping rule violations against her name, her career as a pro cyclist is over, and her reputation is harmed. Lizzy has worked for The Cycling Podcast and so in the interests of transparency we asked Tom Cary, senior sports correspondent of The Telegraph, to conduct this independent interview. The episode is introduced by Rose Manley. A warning, this podcast does contain references to suicide and suicidal thoughts. A few abbreviations will come up, so just to give some clarity: • WADA is the World Anti-Doping Agency • UKAD is the UK Anti-Doping Agency, which is responsible for making sure that British athletes comply with the WADA code • CAS is the Court of Arbitration for Sport, an independent institution involved in resolving legal disputes in the field of sport • AAF is an Adverse Analytical Finding - commonly known as a positive doping test • MRL stands for Minimum Reporting Limit. The concentration below which a substance will not trigger a positive test • ADRV stands for Anti-Doping Rules Violation Reference is also made to the cases of Shari Bossuyt and Toon Aerts. Both riders were given two year suspensions for testing positive for letrozole, which both claim is the result of food contamination.
