Sean Malone on Why People Suck at Economics
There’s no one better at explaining economics in an interesting, non-obnoxious way than Sean Malone and his Out of Frame channel. It’s such an important subject, but very few people are truly interested – and only a portion of those want to learn as opposed to just spreading their own beliefs. In terms of creating compelling YouTube videos, it’s a challenge. And occasionally it goes wrong – like with Sean’s Arcane video. It turns out those commenters were more interested in critiquing what he didn’t talk about, and that’s a common problem with video essays. Why does it feel like we’re slowly turning off a faucet of decency in online discourse? Kevin’s spent some time re-thinking the conclusion of his video about robots and automation, and even though pretty much everything is getting better all the time, it’s something we generally don’t appreciate. Why?! And if it’s all improving, how come Netflix seems to have stagnated? Sean’s got thoughts about the state of the video essay, and he thinks it’s just a bit less popular now than in the past. Maybe that’s due to the rise of Shorts, TikToks, and quick, less-nuanced content. And maybe we’re all just getting tired of thinking. We could talk about movies and comics all day with Sean – he’s shockingly knowledgeable. But Kevin wanted to seize on the grand debate over who Superman should be. Is he a strong, moral character like in the Donner films? Or is it important that he’s darker and feels some of the more insidious emotions? It’s worth noting that Superman is committed to doing good in the world when it just doesn’t benefit him very often. Patrons jump in to ask about the art of persuasion with difficult topics, YouTube’s old mantra of “Broadcast Yourself,” the unique appeal of HGTV, whether streaming is becoming cable, and whether Sean would re-make any of his old videos. This discussion ranged from building houses to why TV sucks, and it’s a fascinating look at a mind that has spent years refining the process of generating compelling content – and we’re already planning topics for the next time we talk to Sean. Thanks to everyone who came out for the live show on Discord, and a special thanks to the Patrons who make this show happen each and every week – including Venture Addicts. Welcome to the orphanage! Safemoon and the Evolution of CoffeeZilla
Post your first job FREE: https://linkedin.com/create The man who used to make excellent educational videos you could watch as you drank a cup of coffee in the morning has evolved into a stone-cold assassin of all things fraudulent – and Coffeezilla’s massive investigative video on Safemoon might be his most important work yet. It didn’t take him much time to realize that Safemoon’s model just… didn’t make sense. But after 11 months of interviews and research, he’s put out a banger that lays bare the personalities and problems around that particular crypto coin. And it’s an extremely difficult business to analyze since regulators are literally years behind. What’s legal? What’s breaking the law? What *is* the law? Influencers have hopped on to several crypto projects, and they don’t seem to care much about the potential rug pulls. It *seems* obvious that this is dangerous territory for people considering buying into these coins, but Coffee explains that people are in a rough spot. They need solutions, they need options, and crypto gives them hope. There’ll be more on Safemoon in coming days – so we wanted to dive deep into Coffee’s incredible transition from Break to Zilla. It happened by accident, but when he went full force, the result was a unique digital studio and an efficient model that made his old channel largely obsolete. He’s customized every element of the Zilla to make his audience and himself happy, and it’s working. Patrons, many of whom have been waiting months for Coffee’s return, ask about how he’s so good at drawing new info out of people like Mr. Beast, the future of digital sets, and the influence of crypto. We were thrilled to see CoffeeZilla hit 1 million subs the other day, and now he’s got a video on the trending tab – it was just an incredible time to hang out with everyone in the Discord and one of the most creative people we’ve ever encountered in YouTube. Thanks to everyone who showed up for the live show *and* who played Minecraft after (!), and a special thanks to the Patrons who make this show happen each and every week. You really are the best. Barely Sociable on Dangerous Mysteries, Taboo
It feels like everyone on YouTube is telling long-form stories now. But in the last 2 years, one channel has exploded by mixing intriguing investigations, a commitment to the truth, and a voice like hot butter. Barely Sociable’s latest target is the music industry, and after spending a little time asking him about it, the industry’s perverse incentives lay bare a recipe for crazy. Barely goes over details from the CIA handbook for assassinations (!) as he goes into how musicians can subject to a host of threats, from organized crime to moneygrubbing executives. And the results can be as wild as the bizarre bathtub demise of Whitney Houston and her daughter. Kevin needs to know: was Jimi Hendrix murdered? The answer is compelling. Barely has become a staple of investigative YouTube while still managing to keep most of his anonymity. Sometimes it’s a blessing, but sometimes it limits opportunities. And that’s alright – we’re all more attached to his editing and research than we are to his face. But what he does need is a mascot, and there’s no better fit than the milk-sweating platypus. The origin story of all things Sociable is as mysterious as one of his videos, but it’s clear that a fair amount of prior work and expertise led to the creation of the channel. He can make content about anything – so what won’t he do? It’s dangerous out there. Patrons ask some really excellent questions about the innerworkings of Barely’s mind, conspiracies, and why people even bother to invent things when reality itself is so bizarre. Thanks to everyone who came out for the live recording – there were a lot of you and we had a ball poking and prodding Barely’s neurons with you. And those who stuck around for the aftershow hangout are the salt of the earth. Our Patrons are the best, you really do make this show happen each and every week. You love anime. You love tea. Jared Bauer: Wisecrack to Wisdom
You love anime. You love tea. Get 10% off your order with code CREATE at The Dragon's Treasure: https://www.thedragonstreasure.com/ Buy our T-shirts: https://www.thecreateunknown.com/store/ Jared Bauer is one of the few people on YouTube who has built something massive and then moved on, and his journey from Wisecrack to his own total reinvention sounds like it’s just getting started. It doesn’t take long for us to realize that Jared is on another level when it comes to understanding the business of online media and how the dollars actually flow. Is the age of brand-sponsored content nearing an end?! Jared thinks that influencer marketing’s house of cards is ready to collapse, and he’s happy to have moved out. But it’s not all grim: what failed in the past might actually be what succeeds in the future. What he does know is that the grind of Wisecrack wore him down, and as he explains the channel’s freakish pace of content generation it’s easy to understand why. Long-term burnout can happen, like with Freddie Wong, or it can be short-term discomfort – like Kevin’s struggle with performing a script while screaming through racetrack corners. It all adds up. Is it possible to sustain years of hard work without running the risk of burnout? Maybe, if you’re shamelessly authentic. It’s a struggle with parasocial relationships, though.. Or is it? Jared talks about everything from what the Harlem Shake *really* meant to how it’s even possible to offer a unique perspective through the video essay. Thanks to everyone who came out to the live show – that chat participation really helps drive the episode. And a special thanks to our Patrons who make this show happen each and every week. In a sea of angry video game guys, Johnny just wanted to talk about the games he loved – obscure titles like Ys and Phantasy Star. 14 years later, he’s still sharing his passion for gaming, anime, and D&D with no plans on retiring. Kevin and Johnny get into growing up in the “quieter” 1990s, and swap Final Fantasy 7 pre-order bonus T-shirt stories. They also fanboy out on late 80s hand-drawn anime, and the soundtrack to Project A-Ko. Johnny calls out Kevin for treating him as his personal gamer therapist and Kevin details his pendulum swing between enjoying objectively terrible and great games. We round out the discussion with some questions from Patrons and a tease about what’s coming next on the HappyConsoleGamer channel. Hint: gaming excitement. The Crossroads of Eggy
You love anime. You love tea. Get 10% off your order with code CREATE at The Dragon's Treasure: https://www.thedragonstreasure.com/ Buy our T-shirts: https://www.thecreateunknown.com/store/ The online journey of Eggy is nearly unrivaled, with arcs that include societal commentary, spitting bars, appearing in documentaries and being a person of interest to the FBI. After one of the longest, strangest trips any online persona has taken, Eggy is at a crossroads – and we’re here to figure out what his next move is (after the Final Fantasy and Dr. Pepper). The problem here is the constant process of spending days upon days building something just to have it ripped away, and Eggy’s not sure how many more times he can do that. It’s not even clear why he was banned, but the prospect of working through a site like Patreon doesn’t seem to appeal. After 5 years of full-time YouTube, maybe it’s even time for a real job. We’re in a technologically-dependent world, and Eggy gives a little human connection to those who need it most. The donations were nice, but the audience desperately tried to pay him to break sobriety – and that’s the sort of thing that makes the allure of YouTube life fade. The solution? Self-betterment, because YouTube or not, the shell, white, and yolk are all going to be there. LSMS Fitness is Eggy’s new venture, and everyone is on board with his fitness journey except his gym’s janitor. Darksydephil, King Cobra, there are a lot of people to keep Eggy busy in the meantime… but is the next Eggy arc a cooking show? Nutrition is actually Eggy’s real background interest, and he’s developed his skills over the last decade. Whatever’s next, we’re here for it. Thanks to Eggy for coming back and spending a couple hours with us, and thanks to everyone who joined in on the live show. And a special thanks to the Patrons who make this show happen each and every week. You really are the best. Next week we’ll be live in the Discord with HappyConsoleGamer, followed by Jared Bauer (formerly of Wisecrack), BarelySociable, Coffeezilla, and Out of Frame’s Sean Malone. Brady Haran: YouTube's One-Man Liberal Arts Degree
You love anime. You love tea. Get 10% off your order with code CREATE at The Dragon's Treasure: https://www.thedragonstreasure.com/ Buy our T-shirts: https://www.thecreateunknown.com/store/ No one in YouTube’s educational universe is more productive than Brady Haran, with literally thousands of videos that cover math, computer science, chemistry… if it’s interesting, Brady has probably made a video about it – or he’s planning to. Surprisingly, or not so surprisingly, the roots of all that massive body of work are in journalism. But instead of bazillions of hours of education content, we almost got a single documentary series. The real science in Brady’s videos may be in how he talks to people – or is that art? It’s not easy to sit down with academics and pull out compelling content, and Brady is one of the best at making them feel comfortable enough to spill the interesting information. Sometimes that’s not the topic Brady set out to cover, and sometimes it surprises even the interview subjects themselves. And unfortunately, there may be no substitute for experience. Through it all, Brady has developed a subtle confidence that permeates his attitude toward making content. It’s a lesson every creative listening to TCU needs to hear: it’s ok to take awhile. It’s ok to scrap an idea. It’s ok not to plan meticulously and instead to let the content and the people around it run their natural course. Without letting that happen, Kevin never would’ve discovered the Lieber Conjecture. We decide to jettison the number 8 from the human experience before moving into an epic discussion of collecting, cricket, and the historical supremacy of Don Bradman. We talk to a ton of people who in one way or another are excellent models for how to create on a sustainable scale, but there might not be a better example to follow than Brady Haran. Listen, relisten, and create. We had a great crowd for this live show – and we’ve got Eggy, HappyConsoleGamer, and Jared formerly of Wisecrack on the way. Get in the Discord and follow the Events tab, since occasionally our time accommodates the geographic location of the guest. James Rolfe Talks the Angry Video Game Nerd
You love anime. You love tea. Get 10% off your order with code CREATE at The Dragon's Treasure: https://www.thedragonstreasure.com/ Buy our T-shirts: https://www.thecreateunknown.com/store/ Few YouTube creators have had an impact as large as James Rolfe’s, with the Angry Video Game Nerd videos constantly cited by TCU listeners as having inspired their work – including Kevin. James, AVGN, Cinemassacre and the ecosystem they’ve built over the last 15 years paved the way for video game commentary content to flourish, and we’ve finally corralled James into spending some time talking to us about it. But if AVGN never existed and James started fresh today, what would his channel be about? As James continues to refine his book, he knows one thing: it’s not possible to walk into a GameStop. Aside from the occasional public recognition, the AVGN life is fairly tame – unless someone sees him in traffic. It’s not all 8-bit life, though; the origins of the AVGN phenomenon can actually be found deep in New Jersey’s Pine Barrens with a film about the Legend of the Blue Hole. AVGN itself started with a few funny videos and then evolved as its popularity grew. Production values increased along with the complexity of scripts, and a bit of profanity started to flow. But as James’ unique presence exploded and YouTube flourished, so did a legion of copycats. Even the ones who tried to be original tended to get angrier. That’s when it became obvious that AVGN was doing something different with its level of analysis and nuance… and James’ formula hasn’t changed. The shows over the years have, though, for a host of reasons. Some just weren’t popular or worth the effort. Others, like Board James, ran their natural course. But for all the changes and evolutions, the core of the Nerd has remained the same – and James wouldn’t have it any other way. What’s the future hold? Horror, perhaps. The book. Conventions. Nerding and assorted Nerdery. It’s almost as if James is just getting started. We’re sorry that no one could join us live for this one, since Discord went down right when we were recording and our options were to talk to James elsewhere or cancel entirely (and probably not be able to reschedule). Hopefully James can come back to promote his book and be subjected to the Patron Question Gauntlet (PGQ). We’ve got Brady Haran of Numberphile (and 8 other channels!) on Tuesday at 6pm ET in the Discord, so GET INNNNN. We miss you. Laterment Saves The Create Unknown
You love anime. You love tea. Get 10% off your order with code CREATE at The Dragon's Treasure: https://www.thedragonstreasure.com/ Buy our T-shirts: https://www.thecreateunknown.com/store/ Sign up for a chance to join The Later Network: https://later.gg/ Nearly 2 years ago, Laterment tweeted to us that he was going to be a guest on The Create Unknown someday, and that the podcast inspired him to start a channel. At that time Laterment had 0 subscribers. Now he has 13,000, and in one of the strangest (and most harrowing) turn of events we’ve ever had, he saved our community. Matt predicted that it would be episode #137, so he was only slightly off. Here’s the background: an errant click led to ownership of the TCU Discord server being transferred to a Turkish scammer. As the babies started to fall and we accepted the reality of starting over, Laterment jumped in to befriend the hacker and… get the server back, no extortion fees necessary. That’s the Laterment way, and as he says, he believes in creators – even if they’re creating havoc. To him, the TCU community is priceless, because he’s just a dude being a dude. Matt points out that the hacker has a combination of skills and free time that could lead to helping people rather than harming them, since there are better ways to make a buck than holding Discord accounts hostage. But the lure and value of the Discord badges appear to be stronger than he realizes. The newly-converted Laterment will be leading The Later Network, a joint project with The Create Unknown, to bring a new brand of Minecraft to the masses. Alpha/beta testers are encouraged to sign up at the link above, because we’re already live. We’ve been working for months on developing the right tone and finding the right people to make it work, and now it’s time to commit to the block-building life. Later.gg won’t be happening on Twitch, though, since Laterment is severing his complex relationship with the platform in favor of streaming on YouTube. The Laterment sage is one of our favorites because it’s been an opportunity to watch one of our own start, grow, and evolve a unique channel over the course of years. We’re here for it, and we’ll do whatever we can to support Laterment and anyone else with the willingness to put the work in. Thanks to Laterment for an epic 2-hour hangout – and for an epic more than 2 YEAR hangout within the TCU community. He’s a staple around these parts, and we all hope it stays that way. We more than filled up this week, so thanks to everyone who stuck around and had a ball with us. Kevin’s Very Personal Advice for Creators
You love anime. You love tea. Get 10% off your order with code CREATE at The Dragon's Treasure: https://www.thedragonstreasure.com/ Buy our T-shirts: https://www.thecreateunknown.com/store/ Successful people give a lot of terrible advice. They don’t mean to, but they do. It’s extremely difficult to analyze yourself and your own path, so it’s natural for a successful person to see patterns that aren’t there and to cherrypick important moments… and then try to apply that advice to you. As Kevin details, sometimes it’s even worse than that, and they give flat-out awful advice. The takeaway? Be wary, and Matt has a working thesis that everyone is full of shit all the time. But there’s another big topic we’ve wanted to talk about for years, and that’s how easy it is to set yourself on a depressing path that just isn’t good for you. Kevin was actually a serious musician for years, but the sort of music he was into wasn’t healthy. He details the reasons why so many musicians in grunge and metal didn’t make it out of the 1990’s, and it’s not dissimilar to some of the struggles YouTubers and artists are dealing with right now. At a certain point, the artistic path that defines you can actually be bad for you – and Matt suggests that the best way out can involve other people. Humanity has spent over a quarter million hours listening to this podcast in the last month alone, and that support means everything to us. Thanks to everyone who showed up to hear an uncommonly-open episode, and especially to the Patrons who make this show happen each and every week. You really are the best. A Romantic Date with Alternate History Hub
You love anime. You love tea. Get 10% off your order with code CREATE at The Dragon's Treasure: https://www.thedragonstreasure.com/ Buy our T-shirts: https://www.thecreateunknown.com/store/ Our long-awaited Valentine’s Date with Alternate History Hub is FINALLY HERE! Getting a clear picture of history is hard enough, but Alternate History Hub somehow manages to imagine how things *could* have been with a highly-knowledgeable, entertaining realism. His favorite website in the world? Well, we start by positing what life would be like had it never existed at all. It all started with a really, really bad show on SpikeTV. A ridiculous show pilot was so terrible and employed such simplistic, boring history that Alternate History Hub was born. And even the pilot itself was hard to track down because it’s been nearly scrubbed from the internet. They did the “worst possible thing you can do with history,” and it included a fascist version of Facebook. AHH can use fiction to teach how history happened, but SpikeTV couldn’t pull it off. Storytelling is everything in history, whether it’s a YouTube video or a classroom teacher. Kevin is going to play the odds by having 17 children and naming them all William, and Matt has a strategy for injecting a harsh dose of reality into the replies of the most obnoxious social media weenies. And castles? They’re actually really small on the inside. It seems like it would be easy to make history content sustainably, but it’s been near impossible for AHH and almost everyone else in the history game. Since it necessarily touches on politics, social problems, and conflict, all things history raise red flags everywhere. Advertisers don’t like it, so YouTube doesn’t like it – despite their stated commitment to educational content. We really don’t know what the future holds for history, and it’s a shame that it’s such a difficult, ever-present question for YouTubers like History Hub. But when we consider what history is really like – not imagining yourself as you are now in a historical place, but trying to understand the people of a particular moment in time – there’s really only one truly important question: If you grew up in Chris-Chan’s position, would your life have turned out exactly the same way? Then the Patrons jump in to cleanse the question palate with a host of queries from serious to frivolous – and it couldn’t have ended better. Thanks to Alternate History Hub for taking so much time to be probed on the development of historical genius on a platform that tends to reward twerking and gluttony. There aren’t a lot of history channels out there that are entertaining *and* highly accurate – subscribe. SUBSCRIBE. Thanks to everyone who showed up to a raucous live show, and especially to the Patrons who make this show happen each and every week. You really are the best. Punting Koalas with I Did a Thing
You love anime. You love tea. Get 10% off your order with code CREATE at The Dragon's Treasure: https://www.thedragonstreasure.com/ Buy our T-shirts: https://www.thecreateunknown.com/store/ It’s time to do things, and we’re talking to the world’s expert on… doing things. Grab your hammer guns and grill a kangaroo steak, because I Did a Thing is here and he has absolutely no limits. Literally, we start off by talking about what he won’t do, and that list is not long. Australia is a running theme in this podcast, including the laws and regulations that turned Alex into an (almost) criminal. It’s why he had to dismantle one of his most unique inventions and spread it in dumpsters throughout town, because that’s normal. He’s lucky it didn’t fire straight through his head, which we learn was an actual possibility. No one combines curiosity and crazy at such a high level as Alex, except maybe Michael Reeves and a few other evil geniuses. People appreciate how unique that is, making offers as high as $15,000 for the weird, amazing stuff he makes. At least destroying all his family’s possessions in a bid to satisfy childhood ADHD is starting to pay off. Then it’s electrocution time, because we’ve collectively experienced a lot of it – and Alex is such a frequent victim that when the breaker trips in his house, his family knows Alex probably got zapped. That brings up the age-old question of whether content like Alex’s is dangerous at all, and the answer is probably yes. And that’s a good thing. Comedy is a major part of why so many millions of people love Alex’s videos. They aren’t just interesting science and engineering, they’re incredible entertainment. Very, very few people can pull that off, but whether he’s getting a haircut in North Korea or building a bird bath teeming with unintended consequences, Alex makes it work. Kevin thinks smooth-brained koalas are the lowest form of life, and Alex has a story about punting one in the air before Patrons jump in to ask about his best and worst videos, the mindset behind changing titles and thumbnails, and his forays into politically-charged comedy – it’s a range of topics that’s perfectly representative of Alex and both of his channels. Thanks to Alex for hanging out for a couple hours and being open to talking about any topic at all, and thanks to everyone who came out for the live show – it was a GREAT one. And the Patrons who support this show really do make it happen each and every week. Up next: Alternate History Hub, Tuesday at 6pm ET live in the Discord. GET INNN. The Infinite Talent of Gabriel Brown
You love anime. You love tea. Get 10% off your order with code CREATE at The Dragon's Treasure: https://www.thedragonstreasure.com/ Buy our T-shirts: https://www.thecreateunknown.com/store/ Gabriel Brown might be the most broadly-talented guest we’ve ever had. He not only sings, he’s ever singer. He’s got a deep, highly-knowledgeable interest in all things science. He knows ballistics. He’s a voice actor, a paraglider… it’s incredible, and 90 minutes with him wasn’t nearly enough. Songs, and especially song bits, are a little different than overall impersonation – and the limitations Gabriel explains make a lot of sense. That incredible 54 songs video? That wasn’t the cash cow, but it drove traffic elsewhere, including Spotify. The 7th Fleet was keen on, uh, paying tribute to Michael Jackson, and Gabriel answered the call. But that’s nothing compared to the sheer determination he’s exhibited to get to the Moon. His SpaceX saga is incredible, and although it hasn’t worked out just yet, the door hasn’t closed entirely. Plan B? Become a billionaire. As YouTubers like 12tone are realizing, the platform really is an island. Not only is it insular with the public, but it’s even insular within the media. And then Gabriel’s explanation of Barrett rifle ballistics turns The Create Unknown into a firearms podcast. After an incredible discussion about curiosity and developing an appreciation for knowing things, we get into the real intellectual stuff: the My Little Pony community. It’s a wild ride. The Patrons grill Gabriel on all sorts of things, from specifics about music production to Hazbin Hotel and why he can only play a handful of video games. And, of course, the fursona question is not only back, but Gabriel handled it better than any guest ever. Everyone who showed up for the live show on Discord got one of the best views into the creative mind that we’ve ever offered up – and we could talk to Gabriel for 20 more hours without scratching the surface. Thanks to all of you who joined in, and especially to the Patrons who make this show happen every single week. Next up… I Did a Thing, Tuesday night at 6pm ET in the Discord. GET IN. PsychicPebbles & Michael Cusack Talk Smiling Friends
You love anime. You love tea. Get 10% off your order with code CREATE at The Dragon's Treasure: https://www.thedragonstreasure.com/ Thanks to Brilliant for supporting The Create Unknown and the creative community. You can get started on Brilliant for FREE, and the first 200 people to click this link will receive 20% off an annual premium membership: https://brilliant.org/createunknown Buy our T-shirts: https://www.thecreateunknown.com/store/ We’ve all waited years for this. The Create Unknown community has been following along with Smiling Friends for over 3 years, from the idea stage to its new reality. And we’ve got Zach Hadel/PsychicPebbles and Michael Cusack here to give us HOURS of Smiling Friends talk. We start off with what we didn’t get to see in the show, and how the standards and practices oversight influences the final outcome of a series like Smiling Friends. They tend to shut down, “Anything funny or anything that’s slightly a good idea,” so it’s a lot like YouTube. And one of the biggest problems was… Satan vaping? The boys give us some behind-the-scenes secret about Mustard sucking “impossibly fast” and DJ Spit’s pubes, all of which we never saw. But who did grandma’s lollipop noises? And the GAGGING? We get some leaks about the saddest place to put Pim, and Zach and Michael tell us what makes the Charlie-Pim duo work so well. Here’s a hint from Kevin: they’re NOT ‘Dumb and Dumber.’ It turns out that Mr. Frog is actually the oldest character of all. But… what did he say on Jimmy Fallon?! The world was very, very close to seeing Chris-Chan as the grease puddle, and Zach details the process that killed our dream. Imagine the memes we missed out on… but the ones we’ve got are amazing. Zach’s obsessed with Dan Aykroyd, and we’re obsessed with Nothing But Trouble – and in particular, a very specific nose. But not everyone loves Smiling Friends. We go line by line through a scathing review that’s disappointed that the show isn’t like Big Mouth and Rick and Morty. Was that article actually bait?! Kevin’s favorite scene was Satan’s DoorDash experience, which is so perfectly awkward and mundane as to be elevated into something unique. Michael says he’s less and less social as he ages, so maybe the thing about hundreds of hours spent gooning is more real than we know. Smiling Friends is full of tiny details, and the oversight from Michael and Zach throughout the series had to be fatiguing. But it resulted in a show that carried out their vision and entertained millions. Patrons jump in to ask literally dozens of questions, and Michael and Zack stuck around for them all. What about the Rust gameplay? What’s the integration of 3D and live action do to the process? How do you stop being your worst critic? And WHERE IS SEASON 2??? Thanks to the HUNDREDS of people who joined us live, and especially to the Patrons who made this episode possible. To those of you have been around for a while and stuck with us: it means everything to us. And to the many new Patrons: tell us about your art, your creative project, your interests… that’s what makes our community great. The Music of Smiling Friends with Brendan Caulfield
Buy our T-shirts: https://www.thecreateunknown.com/store/ Brendan Caulfield is the composer for Smiling Friends, YOLO Crystal Fantasy, Koala Man, Bushworld Adventures… and that’s just the beginning. He’s developed a long-term collaborative partnership with Michael Cusack, and the release of Smiling Friends gives us a perfect opportunity to talk to Brendan about the process of setting deranged art to music. That includes setting the Mr. Boss breastfeeding scene to song. The nature of animation like Smiling Friends means that Brendan has to run an incredible range of tones and moods. You’d think that would require a tremendous amount of detailed guidance, or at least a really good draft of the animation – but no. It turns out he gets a brief storyboard and then gets the job done. WHAT?! We need to talk about the sounds of a grandma hyper-fellating a lollipop, because that’s a thing. Michael and Brendan go way back, and their story of working together more and more over time is probably the most classic example of everything we’ve talked about for 125 episodes. He does what he says he’s going to do and doesn’t have a problem spending 5 years working in grandma’s basement to get it done. Part of his success is due to admitting what he sucks at, which helps everyone. When it comes to Smiling Friends, Brendan says he’s like Ringo Starr: he’s just happy to be working on it. Everything about Brendan suggests that he’s going to be working on impressive projects for a long, long time. Thanks to Brendan for spending so much time with us and setting the perfect stage for next week’s episode with Pebbles and Michael Cusack. Everyone who joined in with us live really got to witness a good one – and a special thanks to the Patrons who make this show happen each and every week. Keep Smiling, Friends! Why Vsauce2 Became True Crime
Thanks to Brilliant for supporting The Create Unknown and the creative community. You can get started on Brilliant for FREE, and the first 200 people to click this link will receive 20% off an annual premium membership: https://brilliant.org/createunknown Buy our T-shirts: https://www.thecreateunknown.com/store/ For the first time in about 100 episodes, we had a series of technical problems (both with us and the guest) that necessitated rescheduling Alternate History Hub to Tuesday, February 15th. He’s now our Valentine’s Day date and he doesn’t even know it. Sorry for having to do that on short notice – but it DID open up a chance for us to go into some detail about something we’ve wanted to talk about for a few months now. Kevin has spent a full decade making videos on YouTube that have been in the hard math/science niche, and for about 6 months he’s been applying all that knowledge to real life stories of crime and injustice. That’s a weird switch… OR IS IT? Kevin and Matt go over why it happened, why it’s not actually that big of a change, and how this is a very good example of the way creative projects evolve over time. If you think you can do one thing over and over, you probably can’t, or at least not forever. At some point you’re going to have to adjust. Maybe it’s a uniquely lateral move, maybe it’s something totally different. But if you want to sustain an audience and your own sanity, it’s gotta happen. It really is awesome to have everyone along with us for the ride, whether it’s Vsauce2 videos or The Create Unknown podcast. It makes a tremendous difference being able to talk about this stuff and get feedback along the way. Whether it’s a comment during an episode recording or a reply left on a video, we read them, take them seriously, and work them into the process. We really do appreciate it. Thanks to everyone who popped in on Friday for our impromptu recording, and a special thanks to the Patrons who keep us going every week. We’ve got a remarkable slate of interviews coming up, including a Smiling Friends takeover. If you miss those, we will not smile and we will no longer be your friend. Chinese Social Credit & Waifus with SumitoMedia
Thanks to Brilliant for supporting The Create Unknown and the creative community. You can get started on Brilliant for FREE, and the first 200 people to click this link will receive 20% off an annual premium membership: https://brilliant.org/createunknown Buy our T-shirts: https://www.thecreateunknown.com/store/ 2021 was the Year of SumitoMedia – and just 12 months after we first talked to Sumit, his meme-culture YouTube channel popped from averaging about 50,000 views a month to nearly 600,000. What’s the one constant? Misato from Evangelion, who’s something of a mommy figure. Mem culture touches on everything, but Kevin notices a difference between people who stream and watch movies vs. people who actually watch TV. What does it even mean to watch TV at this point? Sumit doesn’t have time for TV, since he’s busy platinum’ing every video game. But why? Chinese social credit as a meme got better and better through 2021, and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see it continue for another year… or more. Sumit explains the social credit system and why it’s so bizarre. And the CDC says he needs to ponder more orbs. Kevin’s frustrated that some people don’t get jokes – at al – and so is Sumit. Matt goes back to Sumit’s 5th tweet ever to find the origins of the ThiccBit, which gets its very first like after more than 3 years. Sumit really doesn’t like Seth Rogen. At this point we’ve talked to a whole lot of creators, from YouTube to streaming to music and comedy writing. A lot of people succeed, but not many do it right and do it sustainably. Sumit does, so pay attention to that as we churn through a year that needs memes very, very badly. Thanks to everyone who showed up for our first live show of 2022, and a special thanks to the Patrons who make this show happen each and every week. Reflecting on 250 Hours of The Create Unknown
Thanks to Brilliant for supporting The Create Unknown and the creative community. You can get started on Brilliant for FREE, and the first 200 people to click this link will receive 20% off an annual premium membership: https://brilliant.org/createunknown We’re going to end the year with some good news: Smiling Friends is COMING SOON. Like, really soon. The trailer’s out and we’re excited – and we’ll have PsychicPebbles and Michael Cusack on to talk about it once the show is out. Watch here: https://youtu.be/H3_Ii6IxCJI And thanks to our newly-emeritus producer Dan Yosua for all he’s done over the last year+. Through all of it, he’s quietly been building a very good YouTube channel around photography equipment, mainly lenses. Subscribe here: https://www.youtube.com/c/DanYosua/videos We also drop a line about Maple, who despite being 13 seconds old, just released a video over 2 hours long reviewing every Half-Life game (and this is only Part 1). Be like Maple. Grind like Maple. This is how it works. https://youtu.be/AtjB77ofMTI Matt Watson had to reschedule at the last second, so our year-end wrap up starts with acknowledging the range of people we’ve talked to. We’re pretty glad that we’ve run the gamut from young Minecrafters like Jack Manifold to Food4Dogs’ incredible origin story. The truth is that we love the unpredictability of the Allen Pans, the sharp ramblings of Mutahar, and YourMovieSucks talking about horses. It’s all awesome. And a bit of advice: no one knows anything, and you should respond as quickly as possible. Be easy to work with. Make people a little happier. Make them not hate dealing with you. It really is that simple – BAM. Full career in media (and just about everywhere else). We’ll be back to recording after New Year’s Day because we remembered that we have families and stuff and haven’t taken a week off all year. And keep an eye on Twitter and Patreon for streaming announcements, since we hope to get some streams up and running soon. Thanks to everyone who made this year AMAZING, including each person who hangs out with us in the Discord, everyone who replies to tweets, the people who join us for live recordings, and especially the Patrons who really, truly do make this show possible every week. The Gospel According to Weird Paul
Thanks to Brilliant for supporting The Create Unknown and the creative community. You can get started on Brilliant for FREE, and the first 200 people to click this link will receive 20% off an annual premium membership: https://brilliant.org/createunknown When we first started planning the opening batch of episodes for The Create Unknown, we wanted Weird Paul Petroskey – and now we’ve finally got him. He’s a musician. He’s an archivist. He’s the subject of an excellent documentary. And yes, he’s weird enough to collect other people’s IDs. Over the last 40 years, there hasn’t been anyone who makes content like Paul. He’s archived seemingly everything from his life, starting with recording onto 8-tracks and moving into VHS tapes of him being THE original vlogger. But it’s more than just a quirky hobby or an overly-sentimental approach to pop culture. Paul’s got a serious philosophy about preserving the past, right down to diary entries for every single pair of glasses he’s ever had. There are a lot of big, over-arching issues in all this, like what it means to sacrifice the past as we move forward. Kevin details the painful memory of his NES cartridge boxes being tossed out, and there’s a surprising strain of ‘YouTubers before YouTube existed’ in the gaming community. None of this would’ve ever happened if Paul had listened to his dad, who didn’t even want him to touch the camera. And then it’s time to talk music – because Paul, who’s written over 700 songs and recorded dozens of albums, is playing more music now than he ever has in his life. From 8-tracks to Twitch, Paul continues to adapt and evolve, which is really why he’s over 40 years into this media game and still churning out great content. Matt addresses historical perspective and how easy it is to gaslight yourself, and Patrons jump in to ask about EVERYTHING weird, including Tom Lehrer and Dr. Demento. Also, congratulations to Kevin on his 4,444,444th subscriber AND his 11th YouTube birthday. And in that 11 years, one of our absolute favorite creators is Paul. We can’t express how much fun we had with this episode, so thanks to Paul for making it happen. Thanks to everyone who showed up to enjoy it with us live, and a special thanks to all the Patrons who keep this show going each and every week. You really are the best. YourMovieSucks talks Hollywood, Indies and YouTube Thieves
Few in YouTube’s burgeoning film review scene have the biting, quick wit of YourMovieSucks -- and if your cinematic masterpiece has flaws, Adum’s going to lay them bare. The good news, at least for us, is that he’s going to be outrageously funny doing it. After exposing Adum’s undying love for Nikocado Avocado, he jumps straight into detailing a crazy exploit on YouTube that’s causing him a fair bit of stress. And it makes sense, too, since other people are co-opting a subscriber base specifically interested in his art. It’s just one on a long list of problems YouTube needs to deal with, but instead, they got rid of the dislike button. Kevin actually prefers watching YMS reviews of some movies to watching those movies themselves, because hey -- making fun of Hollywood is a bonus. And there’s a lot to question, like digital vs. film, and plenty of tweets from directors like Ridley Scott who just don’t seem to get it. They do get some things right, though, like tapping the audience’s seemingly-endless interest in superhero movies. We wonder if it’s too saturated; Adum’s probably right when he says that people just like seeing the characters they love on screen. Adum is bullish on Korean films (and he’s almost certainly right about that), and he’s also a horse. We don’t know how many hands high he is, but it’s probably around 16. We’ve asked a lot of furry questions, but we’ve never gotten any real furry answers -- until now. Patrons ask about rewatch value, Derek Savage, the mystery that is the term “kino,” and more. It’s a wild ride. Thanks to everyone who came out to hang with YMS, and a special thanks to the Patrons who make this show happen each and every week. You really are the best. 2nd Annual TCU Friendsgiving Celebration
It’s The Create Unknown’s Second Annual Friendsgiving, which means it’s time to hang out with babies, tots, and assorted TCU miscreants and express our thanks for a few things -- from our incredible community to the fact that things aren’t worse. Because… they totally could be. Kevin kicks off detail about Vsauce2’s content direction and how thankful he is that subscribers seem to like it, and that makes a big difference in terms of making more of it. Matt loves everyone’s quirks and hobbies, from Plunderlings to bookbinding to office parties. Kevin is thankful for YouTube shorts, which have opened up a brand new avenue for his creativity and have done wonders for introducing people to Vsauce2, and Matt goes into a long appreciation-rant about the value of obsessions. Cowboy Bebop live action. Stuffing 3 marsupials into one another. Eating butternuts in the cellar. IT’S ALL HERE. We really mean it when we say that we’re thankful for everyone who listens to this show, talks to us in comments or on Discord and Twitter, and just plain hangs out with us. And we’re especially thankful for the Patrons who keep this show going every episode. On to the next Thanksgiving! The Rittenhouse Trial Changed YouTube
Something unique and amazing is happening on YouTube, and oddly enough, it was revealed by Rekieta Media and the Kyle Rittenhouse trial. It’s a contentious, complex event in the public interest, and Rekieta and his guests have democratized expertise. And they’ve obliterated the traditional networks in the process. Media companies are beholden to many, many people and organizations. Streamers aren’t. And this mirrors what we’re seeing in sports commentary, where the future probably suggests that we’ll have the ability to run live commentary on game broadcasts. That sounds great, but it also comes with a few sticky parts -- like the proclivity for the internet class to lob undue criticism. Kevin says that we’re becoming “culturally obsessed with outing the bad guys,” and he’s right. The question is to what degree that’s beneficial and whether we can keep it from being destructive. Michael Che and Tim Dillon had a Twitter fight, and Matt thinks that means traditional media like Saturday Night Live has already lost. The moral of the story here is that the doors are about to bust open for anyone -- including you -- to be the expert. Do not wait. Start this now. Because as Kevin says, you need to give yourself a chance to get ‘the call.’ And that might be the most useful bit of advice we’ve given in 118 episodes of The Create Unknown. Thanks to the robust crowd who showed up to talk with us about this live, and a special thanks to the Patrons who make this show happen each and every week. We’ll see you at next week’s TCU Friendsgiving! Jose Arroyo: Conan, Comedy, and Breeding Aquaman
Jose Arroyo has almost certainly made you laugh even if you don’t know it -- and he’s bringing decades of experience as one of Conan O’Brien’s writers into The Create Unknown to put on an absolute masterclass in creativity. The first lesson? Outwait your impatience. Kevin’s got a unique perspective on all this, since he interned for Conan a lifetime ago (which is how he met Jose). Jokes are little, fleeting moments, and Jose describes what it’s like to juggle so many potential projects, especially now that it’s independent. Oh, and when Jose met Kevin, he thought, “I am in the company of a fevered mind.” It was probably the potato comics. Matt points out that we’re almost always wrong when it comes to what other people think. We don’t know their motivations or what drives their decisions and reactions -- so why put much effort into worrying? It’s necessary to some degree, though, like when you’re in a writers room figuring out what’s going to be funny that night for, say, 10 million people. What’s the difference between comedy and just being funny? A lot, actually. It’s like the difference between playing basketball in the NBA and at the YMCA. Jose’s epic journey is one of the best stories we’ve had on TCU, from faxing jokes into Jay Leno and crossing his fingers, to figure out which of a dozen options he’s got right now. If you make anything -- or you WANT to make anything -- you need to listen to this one. Thanks to everyone who went live with us, and thanks to the Patrons who make this show happen each and every week. You really are the best. The Story of Key of Awesome
Mark Douglas’s pioneering work on Barely Political and Key of Awesome is one of YouTube’s most unique stories -- and Mark’s going through every detail with us. He’s been on a break for a few years now, and that’ll probably stop when he commits himself to being in a jam. Mark’s passions have changed a bit over time, but now Kevin’s going to threaten harm to get Mark’s album done. What could go wrong? Kevin realized the difference between hanging out with funny friends and actual professional comedians. Mark got started because he didn’t really have an outlet for his humor and nowhere to use his jokes. YouTube gave him that outlet, but it’s absolutely changed over the years to the point where traditional comedy might not even be necessary anymore. When Mark moved into music, everything got a bit more complicated. Producing parodies required meeting certain standards of fair use, hiring actors and actresses ran up budgets, and even Journey slapped complaints on him. Add in having to respond to current trends and feeling trapped and it was time to relax for a while. It’s time to stop when it’s time to stop. Mark’s singular professional life has taken several twists and turns, and we can’t thank him enough for coming into the Unknown to put it all on display. Thanks as well to everyone who showed up for the live episode -- and a special thanks to the Patrons who make this show happen each and every week. You really are the best. William Osman is Done. We Discuss Negative Comments
William Osman, I'm Done: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DVCpKfedfok After too many negative comments, TCU alumnus William Osman has announced that he’s had enough. He’s done despite continued success with his content, and he detailed why in a recent 20-minute video. Every large channel has some form of this problem, and Kevin is no stranger to mean comments about his appearance, style, and content. So, what does a creator do when a tiny percentage of people are criticizing them in a way that hits too hard? Is there any defense to that, or do you have to learn to live with it? Matt asks whether some of those same people would criticize actors or musicians as cruelly as they themselves are criticized, and Kevin thinks a significant component of this is biological. We’re actually programmed to identify and heighten awareness to danger, and some comments might trigger that reflex. This is a really complex issue, and the possible solutions can only go so far. And if you make anything, you’re going to have to deal with this at some point -- so it’s worth thinking about it before you need it. Thanks to everyone who came out to discuss this one live in the Discord, and a special thanks to the Patrons who make this show happen each and every week. Is Stolen Content Ever a Good Thing?
It seems obvious that someone stealing your content is a bad thing. After all, they’re getting the views, the revenue, and the subscriptions. Most of the time that’s true. But after Kevin had his Vsauce2 YouTube content ripped and re-uploaded on TikTok, it got more complex. Vsauce3 Jake and several of the Baby Gang alerted Kevin to the theft, and… then there was a surge in YouTube views. The other guy got 17 million views from stolen content, but Kevin’s seeing it as a glass half-full scenario. Why? In a weird way, it was a proof of concept that his YouTube videos could be broken down into multiple parts and uploaded to TikTok. He didn’t have to take the time or money to try it, especially after a few social media campaigns with lackluster results. Thanks, thief! It’s an age-old debate, whether there’s any validity to “exposure” in creative life. There’s a lot more to it than even we gave it credit for. A brand new patron asks Kevin why God is dead before a brief discussion of TikTok monetization and what it’s like to make art different from what you’re known for. Does Twitch Therapy Exploit Trauma?
Is it possible to have public therapy chats watched by up to 70,000 people that are actually effective? If so, is that even ethical? And if there’s any harm done, does the overall good outweigh it? Is “Twitch therapy” just self-help information, or is it actual therapy? These are the big questions about what Dr. K does on Twitter. His ‘Healthy Gamer’ brand is designed to offer resources and information via social media platforms in an effort to get everyone living happy, healthy online lives. The HG discord has tens of thousands of members; this isn’t a niche thing. But some, including TCU alumnus Slush, are wondering whether Dr. K’s Twitch therapy is useful and ethical. We talk to Slush about his latest video, which examines Dr. K’s therapy streams in the context of the Twitch streamer Reckful. Byron’s mental health struggle lasted for many, many years, and Slush documented it well in his first video, which was a celebration of Reckful’s career. A year ago, Reckful took his own life, and that allows us to review his live therapy streams with Dr. K in a slightly different context. This is a tough subject, and Slush is outstandingly fair. We go in-depth about his video, his research, and what experts think about Twitch therapy. It’s fascinating, and there’s a good chance this topic is going to come up again in the future. Thanks to Slush for giving us 90 minutes of fair and balanced expertise -- and to everyone who showed up to weigh in on the episode. The Death of YouTube Rewind Means More Than You Think
YouTube Rewind is officially dead after a near-decade run, and it absolutely felt like giving up in Saigon or Afghanistan. It started slow, exploded, and plummeted faster than... anything else we can think of. It's not common to rise to such heights so quickly and then become the #1 most hated thing on the platform, and it's actually quite a feat. Kevin, a veteran of Rewind himself, has serious thoughts on why this happened and what it means for YouTube's commitment to itself and audiences. There's a lot in this one, from community suggestions for replacements to forcing YouTube employees to play Squid Game. Thanks to everyone who joined in on this one, episode chat really drove the show. And a special thanks to the Patrons who make this show happen each and every week. You really are the best. Thoughts on Norm Macdonald and Cancelling Comedians
The softest t-shirts ever: https://www.thecreateunknown.com/store/ It might sound simplistic to say that Norm Macdonald was a guy who *loved* jokes, but that actually has pretty deep meaning. Jokes are some of the most complex, intricate, delicate ways we communicate ideas, and Norm Macdonald was one of the best ever. And as legendary as Norm Macdonald was, some people not only don’t get him, but they don’t get humor at all. Seriously. Comedians have a language of joke-telling, and if you don’t understand that language, you’re a lot more likely to be bothered by their humor. What’s that mean for people trying to be funny on YouTube, Twitter, and TikTok? Are they facing an epidemic of cancellation by people who just don’t understand? And for the people who do love and appreciate humor, why do so many of them think it’s so easy? No one would think they could ever be like Lebron James at basketball, but too many people think they’re just as funny as who they see on TV or the internet. It’s delusional, but it’s also kind of understandable. We wanted to remember Norm and give some extra attention to what he’s done for comedy and for the careers of so many people we know, including his best moments (one of which was making Sarah Silverman severely uncomfortable), and then hit some Patron questions ranging from tone markers on internet speech, an IRL episode, and living out a meme. Thanks to everyone who showed up to hang out with us, these episodes really are some of the most enjoyable because we get to talk to you through the whole show. Vsauce2 Gets Demonetized
The softest t-shirts ever: https://www.thecreateunknown.com/store/ We’ve talked to a range of creators about their struggles with demonetization, and we’ve always pointed out how nice it is that educational content is safe. Well… not anymore. Kevin’s latest Vsauce2 video about a very public crime in Britain has been smacked down to the point where AdSense doesn’t even begin to cover the cost of editing. Oh, and the video has been totally throttled. So, what’s actually happening here? But we’re not doomers -- we’re not going to dwell on the sucky stuff. The Patrons jump in to ask all sorts of questions, and yes, there’s more crime content in the pipeline. What’s the tagline that sums up the podcast, and why does it end with our most famous burp? Movies. Expired food. Creative fulfillment vs. creative futility. Lots and lots more -- including Kevin’s most devious lick (which is still soggy). Archspire's Dean Lamb on Fast Guitars and Smelly Vans
When Dean Lamb auditioned for Archspire, he didn’t feel that he was good enough to play with the band -- it took him weeks of pure practice to get up to match Archspire’s incredible speed that pushes the boundaries of how fast humans can play music. And now Dean is not only an integral part of Archspire’s success, but he’s got a YouTube channel that’s its own standalone enterprise. He knows how to “Stay Tech,” but what he doesn’t know is how to fix a touring van that doesn’t beep incessantly every 5 minutes. Being an artist is one thing, but a band is a *group* of artists -- and everyone’s weird. Kevin talks to Dean about being in the middle of serious talent with a drummer and lyricist that work their own wizardry. And oddly enough, being a virtuoso may not extend to all genres. What makes Archspire (and Dean) so unique is a blend of death metal and classical principles, which can be heard throughout their albums, all of which are concept albums. They have to be, as each album is a child of acid dreams that are enmeshed in a 3-4 year cycle of playing, recording, and refining. The whole thing is one big metaphor for life as an artist, though. Dean talks about how important it is to scrap things rather than hold on forever, developing a connection to the art, and the sacrifices it takes to actually get a project done -- like going into near-seclusion to focus on completing an album. Patrons jump in to ask about his favorite guitar solo, playing other instruments, recommendations on improving guitar playing, the first song he ever learned, and the future of music in a DMCA era. Thanks to everyone who came out for Kevin’s favorite episode, and a special thanks to each and every Patron who makes this show possible every week. The Kino Corner, or 120 Minutes of Salo
When we met The Kino Corner, he was just getting started on YouTube -- and in the years since, he’s become one of the go-to experts on YouTube when it comes to evaluating films. Just... not superhero movies. And there are a few reasons for that, including connected films and a larger ecosystem that affects how individual movies are made. Kino isn’t just a film critic. He’s a filmmaker as well. So who does more work, the creator or the critic? Yes, that’s a real question before we get a recipe for synthetic feces. Kino offers a bit of wisdom about taking criticism and facing rejection, and it's all stuff that everyone listening needs to take to heart. It applies to a lot more than YouTube or films, and there’s too much dwelling on the thought process and too little just sitting down and making something. The Logan Paul hiring hail mary might not be the way to do it, though. But it’s easy to be so negative about these things -- negativity is WAY easier to understand than positivity. Being negative is clear and straightforward; being positive is murky and complex. We talk about Kino’s feature-length film “Wasted Hours” before going into patron questions, including why critics make non-critics feel so bad about liking simple things, what Kino learned by hosting a film festival (congratulations to our own DanTheLatch for winning it), what his inspirations are, and a harrowing depiction of Kino’s fursona. Eternal Sunshine of Hans Van Harken’s Mind
It’s official: Hans Van Harken is one of our favorite guests ever, and it isn’t even because he met Pebbles via Newgrounds when they were both teenagers. When drought hit California, Hans saw a blank canvas on which he could paint a movie. That’s when Mutt and Chopps became a reality. Oh, and it’s incredible, from the writing to the makeup to the cinematography and score. But one of the most remarkable elements is how many genres it seems to combine into one unified thing -- including silent comedy from 100 years ago. Hans detailed his extensive pre-production, which not only helped streamline a complex shoot in difficult conditions, but also allowed for a fantastic result on a budget. And the weird thing is how flexible all that pre-planning actually allowed him to be. Most of us who make videos only really have to think about the basics on visuals, script, and sound, but Hans is on another level. Is Hans a writer? An animator? A comedian? An actor? YES. The more we talk, the easier it is to see why he’s made such a range of incredible content over the last 15 years. It’s also easy to see how his attitude and the social element make talented people want to be friends with him and work with him. Be like Hans. He might even be Kevin’s dad (paternity test forthcoming). In a couple creative decades, he’s picked up perspective on everything from how wild places like Newgrounds work to streaming successfully on Twitch -- but that only took a few weeks. And what’s next? Who knows… there’s a Netflix-style series in his mind, maybe some animation, maybe just making his Friends Smile. But what he *does* know is that it’s not necessary to star front and center. Kyle Hill is Serious About Science
Kyle Hill has a creative track that’s pretty unique -- from graduate study to hosting Mythbusters: The Search, to running Nerdist’s science content for years, and now working on his own project, The Facility. He started in the skeptic community debunking bad science information, and eventually started playing around with Chernobyl and superheroes. But how do you figure out when it’s time to intervene? And when you do, who exactly are you? Are you YOU, or are you a specific persona unique to your channel? Kevin’s talked about this in the past -- where Vsauce2 ends and Kevin begins -- and it’s something creators of all kinds face. Has Kyle Hill ever gotten it wrong? Has he done any harm inadvertently? Probably not, but it’s worth asking. In Kyle’s view, some YouTubers just aren’t that responsible, and he’s got a few safety concerns. Nerd stuff has dominated the culture for several years now, but we want to know where Kyle thinks it’s headed. Is Marvel and superhero cultured oversaturated? And why did Avatar drop off the cultural map? Patrons jump into probe Kyle about sticking your head in a particle accelerator, whether Kyle’s actually a viking, what he’s hiding about the REAL Kyle, and who should be careful starting their car. Thanks to everyone who showed up for the live episode, and thanks to Kyle for using some of his vacation time from The Facility. Marques Brownlee Does Everything. EVERYTHING.
Marques Brownlee may very well be the top YouTuber of the last decade -- so of course, Kevin wants to distill his life force into a sippable drink. Between well over 1,000 videos, a new Studio channel, a successful podcast, and a YouTube Original series -- oh, and being a professional athlete -- how does he actually do it all? Seriously, does he sleep? It really is important to take care of yourself, and basic things like sleep and food go a long way. And creatives don’t think nearly enough about how important exercise is to the art. Like it or not, it matters, and Marques is living proof. Even so, how does he stave off the burnout that’s so prevalent in the community? If anyone should get burned out, it’s Marques, and he’s in a great place -- including expanding by involving his whole team in the Studio project through Vox. You’d think he’d get recognized everywhere he goes, including playing ultimate frisbee, but it seems that his car might be the real celebrity. But what’s the deal with people being embarrassed and awkward about saying how they know him? Why is this a thing?! We learn quite a lot about the limits of practical, pervasive technology like automatic paper towel dispensers and the little hand-recognition beams on faucets -- which aren’t nearly as good as we thought. We’ve got serious limits to technology, and that includes updating the classic flip phone. Patrons were excited to throw a litany of questions at Marques, from the Tesla Plaid and his actual use of retro tech to ideas for future series, co-starring with Danny DeVito, and The Haunting Legacy of Will Smith. Thanks to Marques for taking the time to talk with us -- it was absolutely worth the wait -- and to everyone who showed up for a raucous live recording. And a special thanks to the Patrons who make this show happen each and every week. You really are the best. Slimecicle: The Meat in Our Chuckle Sandwich
Slimecicle is here to complete our Chuckle Sandwich trifecta, and we start with a hard-to-answer “would you rather?” and wise words about love. But he and the CS boys are doing quite well with their podcast, which is pretty rare in a world of supergroup e-projects that almost never seem to last. What are they doing right? What makes it toughest is dealing with the ‘reactionary brain’ of the YouTuber, and that’s even harder now that we’re past the simpler days of ElderTube. We talk about the importance of the ‘production mindset,’ and it’s no accident that Slimecicle has a fair amount of experience. When you think of discipline, scheduling, and professionalism, THINK SLIMECICLE. The paradox of the youngest creators sometimes being more mature about the process is worth talking about -- as Jack Manifold and TommyInnit pave the way compared to the clueless teens of a decade ago. That’s almost as important as the origin of the guinea pig in the wild, and whether Slimecicle could orally medicate Schlatt. Then it’s on to Paris Syndrome and Jerusalem Syndrome, both of which are very, very real -- but not as real as Charlie’s hate for cereal. We have a cereal problem, a food theft problem, a corn and bean and hand soap problem… and then Patron questions about egg supremacy, what a Slimecicle tastes like, and why Charlie desperately wants to be a rag doll flung into the ether. Thanks to everyone who came out for our best-attended live show so far -- and a special thanks to the Patrons who make this show happen each and every week. Onward to VidCon! 3 Hours of Furries and Jenkum with Mutahar
EWe’ve never had an episode quite like this one -- Mutahar’s got a lot to talk about, and there’s nothing ordinary about him. Chris-Chan? Blizzard’s “Bill Cosby Suite?” His desperate wish to go to a furry convention’s “after party” before he dies? Yeah, for better or worse, it’s all here. We start by speculating on what’s going to get Muta cancelled in 7 years and what on earth is going on with everyone else’s bad behavior. And we’d like to see the solid creators rewarded a bit more by YouTube, but right now everyone’s still talking about EDP, MiniLadd, and other high profile problems. Muta tells us the easiest part of his day before diving into the balance between entertainment and discussing terrible things. It’s a very serious question and one that many commentators are dealing with right now. Where do we draw the line on the subject matter of controversial memes? We spent a bit of time talking about the ‘Save the Kids’ crypto scam that Muta and TCU alumnus Coffeezilla led the charge on before kicking around the bizarreness of the new wave of NFTs. With everything looking so grim, is there ANYTHING on YouTube that’s still pure? Yes, there’s one thing… Kevin admits to have learned a great deal through these discussions, including how Muta might get married at BronyCon. And we worry about Producer Ben having to attach this whole episode to his CV. Patrons jump in to ask about influencing content on YouTube, $Zilla, the NBA’s NFTs, why Dr. Phil is Muta’s hero, and one of the longest, most detailed answers to the fursona question that TCU has ever received. This is our longest episode ever, and thanks to all the people who stuck around for all of its glory during the live recording. UrAvgConsumer is Normal in a Sea of Tech Nerds
Judner’s UrAvgConsumer channel is one of the leading tech channels on YouTube, and it all started because he didn’t want to stand out. That mentality of delivering valuable information to normal people -- not just the tech-obsessed -- has driven millions of subscribers and an enduring fan base. So what’s the deal with tech YouTubers and not having phone cases?!? Tech isn’t necessarily mind-blowing right now, and Judner points out that we’re in an age of refinement rather than pure crazy invention. Kevin’s got the same problem on Vsauce2, so how do you make the seemingly mundane truly entertaining? One thing Judner knows for sure, though, is that he wants to keep going until it’s not sustainable. His routine has changed quite a bit over the last 2 years, and not just from the pandemic. Does branching out to work with others actually help keep you grounded? Judner travels a lot for tech events, and he gets even more offers to review products -- way more than he can even handle. What can one person do with all that tech? Will he ever do a retro tech review? What type of tech is missing altogether? And what’s the link between Full House and Air Bud? Thanks to everyone who showed up for the live recording, and especially to the Patrons who make this show happen each and every week. Could Vsauce3 Survive the Movies?
A lot can happen in a year and a half, like… winning an Emmy for a YouTube Original and filming its second season. And this time we not only talk to Vsauce3’s Jake Roper, but also to Eric Langlay, the VFX and cinematography wizard behind Could You Survive the Movies? and about a decade of Vsauce videos. So what’s the one movie CYSTM will never be able to do? The answer is kind of surprising, and it shows why it’s so hard to work with production companies -- and both Eric and Jake discuss why this one movie is such a problem. After Jake finds his memory card and Eric reminisces about the horrors of seeing Matt in his boxers, they discuss just how difficult it is to shoot CYSTM. They’re on a much more rapid pace than most scripted shows, and they pack dozens of shoots into one day. We’ve talked in the past about the efficiency of YouTubers, so what’s the balance between the demands of a TV-style production with the talents of online creators? And after all that work, YouTube seems to have made discoverability way too difficult for CYSTM. It’s a quirk of the release schedule, but there’s no solution in sight. It’s frustrating that CYSTM videos aren’t served out to the Vsauce3 audience, but it’s just the way things work. You can’t depend on YouTube, but you CAN depend on spaghetti and meatballs. Patrons jump into ask about the future of CYSTM, including whether there will ever be an episode on a cartoon or animated movie, the dumbest movie they want to cover, the best thing about Top Gun, and an on-set animal massacre so terrible that all evidence of it has been buried. What are Jake and Eric’s Taco Bell orders? Will they ever do a Man vs. Food style show? And did they really meet on Grindr? Thanks to everyone who came out for the live show, we had tons of fun in Discord. And a special thanks to the Patrons who make this show happen each and every week. PsychicPebbles on Making Smiling Friends
3 years ago we started with a couple short, 40-minute episodes per month. Now we’re 2 hours every week and putting our 100th show into the books -- and we couldn’t have done it without the support of PsychicPebbles *and* all of you. So, now it’s time to smile with us, Friends. It’s the Return of the King, and naturally we want to know as much as we can about the upcoming season of Smiling Friends. After establishing that time zones are the worst, Zach tells us that the show will ban laughs of any kind. It’s a pilot now, but that’ll be Episode 1 on release -- and both Zach and Michael are exercising tons of influence over the show, including its minutiae. Why? It’s just easier. And YouTube/Newgrounds types are capable of that and more, which is why they’re undervalued assets in the marketplace. They just don’t waste production time or money and they can do all the jobs required, so it’s decidedly NOT network TV or Hollywood. What do lukewarm cucumbers taste like? Either way, you need clear goals as you also recognize that everyone else has their own individual story. The show’s not even out yet, but we want to know what’s next after Smiling Friends. Movies? It all depends on how audiences react, and fun really isn’t the priority. Kevin hates when people marry their best friends. Zach hates littering and architecture. And then Zach adds to our folder of recordings of his bathroom breaks. Patrons jump in to ask about managing the stress, whether he’d like his face to be better known, some SleepyCabin info that wasn’t on the podcast, favorite Cartoon Network show and more. This episode really meant a lot to us for so many reasons. Thanks to Zach for coming on to celebrate with us, and thanks to all of you -- and especially Patrons -- who have made 100 episodes of this show possible. The Rise of Jack Manifold [Ep. 99]
No one we’ve talked to has risen so high and so fast as Jack Manifold has in the world of Minecraft streaming. In just a year, he’s gone from a tiny audience to being in the elite tier of Minecraft on Twitch -- and that’s a lot to process for someone so young. And it all started from a hashtag campaign. One of the challenges is a sort of content vs. life balance, and Jack’s got an excellent handle on how to juggle both sides. As he says, when those lines blur too much, you’ve just become an actor. But where does all the energy come from? Kevin’s got some important life advice about toilet paper, and that leads to us discovering an organ transplant we didn’t even know existed. And it’s only the 2nd weirdest thing Kevin’s done, given the incident he describes with hiding a camera in a beanie and creeping around a grocery store. It’s impossible to talk to Jack and not go into the details of the DreamSMP, which might be the most complex, multi-faceted media project online. With all the great characters and storylines, it’s a mix of soap opera, reality show, and video game. The Patrons jump in to ask whether Jack ever got a Whopper, the future of Dream SMP lore, the why’s and how’s of his social media break, the best approach to destructive Stans, how Jack discovered Vsauce, and… his fursona. His big, gross fursona. Thanks to Jack for hanging out with us, and thanks to everyone who showed up to the recording. And the Patrons? You literally make this show happen every single week. Has YouTube Given Up? [Ep. 98]
We’ve gearing up for Jack Manifold TONIGHT at 6pm ET, so we wanted to spend a little time talking Google, YouTube, and TikTok with the TCU Community. VidCon featured creator announcements have rubbed some people the wrong way because they simply don’t recognize anyone on the list -- and that’s in large part due to TikTok’s dominance and sponsorship of VidCon itself. Something is changing here, and it’s important to talk about what that is and what it means. But first, SHIRTS. THE SHIRTS ARE HERE. Tots 20% off, Dumpster Crew 50% off, Infantry/Baby Gang/Creator tier FREEEEE. Links are in the episode, and we’ll be popping it everywhere until the remaining few shirts are gone. YouTube has shut down its Spaces program worldwide. Rewind is dead, Red became Originals and that seems to be wrapping up. What’s happening here? Shorts are great, but they’re pretty much what TikTok is. Did YouTube miss an opportunity when Vine died? Are they playing catch up now? Are they being too conservative as the leader in video? Kevin feels like he’s witnessing the end of an era. Is it possible YouTube took a back seat on VidCon to avoid COVID complications? Yes, it absolutely is -- but late in the episode we find out in real-time that YouTube has taken a GIANT step toward addressing every one of Kevin’s gripes. We wrap up talking about video games, the PS5, Matt almost being arrested accidentally in a casino, and whether we should be nuking Mars. Thanks to everyone who showed up to the live show, and a special thanks to the Patrons who make this show happen each and every week. You really are the best. PhysicsGirl and the Moving Muddle Puddle [Ep. 97]
PhysicsGirl Dianna Cowern is your average Forbes 30 Under 30, award-winning YouTube legend who got her start in a tiny Hawaiian school -- which is to suggest that nothing about Dianna’s impressive career path is any sort of accident. With 2 million subscribers and over 150 million views, Dianna has become one of Science YouTube’s most prolific figures, and she’s inspired a generation of girls to go further in physics. Where would she be without that Neil deGrasse Tyson DVD series?! Dianna had a series of teachers who helped drive her interest in physics, but the key might’ve been her own broad interests from music to tennis. Most everything in her life seems to combine into science communication, and it’s a solid example of ‘System 1 and System 2’ thinking. But then it’s mud puddle time. Dianna made an excellent video showing the world’s only moving mud puddle, which is threatening parts of California en route to the Salton Sea. Is there any hope? Kevin thinks “there’s nothing you can do to stop it.” At 20 feet per year, it’s hard to disagree. And it’s one more example of taking a seemingly-mundane subject and making it amazing, which Dianna does so well. She’s always excited, and part of that is because she’s talking to other people who are excited, too. Like making a cloud in your mouth, getting pumped about the ocean, or paving a way on YouTube for herself and others when there are dozens of reasons to quit. Congratulations to Dianna for getting back to surfing, and thanks to each and every one of our Patrons who make this show happen every week! Sven Johnson and Hot Dogs [Ep. 96]
Sven Johnson can make anything funny, whether it’s a hot dog or being a moth. We start off by establishing that most people eat an average of 43,000 hot dogs in their lifetime, which seems accurate. So why is a hot dog always funny? The answer shows how unique Sven’s attitude really is, and why his short, quirky jokes work so well. Then a historical sanitation engineering discussion gets heated surrounding the great “urinal boom” of the 20th century and why we suffer the indignity of peeing in a giant trough. But at least it’s not bacon grease. Sven’s been working on comedy for years now, and it happens everywhere from hanging around with his brother Gus to sleeping in such a bizarre position that it activates a sort of out of body experience. Yes, this is real, and it’s happened to Kevin, too. We talk about the difficult workflow of comedy, and start ideas for a co-branded pee jug for everyone’s desk. Patrons jump in to ask about Sven’s music, his relationship with Gus, whether their mom is actually in on their jokes, what would happen if you peeled a banana and found a hot dog… YEAH. Thanks to every single one of our Patrons -- you make this show possible every week. And thanks to everyone who showed up to hang out with Sven! The Homemade Weapons and Mad Genius of Allen Pan [Ep. 95]
Nobody on YouTube lives out Arthur C. Clarke’s rule that, “Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic” quite like Allen Pan. From flame-throwing gloves to recreating some of the most incredible weapons and gadgets in films, Allen can create just about anything. Except a Gundam, which he desperately wants the money to make. Kevin’s not sure if dinosaurs are real, but Allen is convinced that every bit of water on earth is actually very old dinosaur pee. These are the thought experiments we undertake, leading Allen to conclude that if he had the chance, ““I would just reprogram my mind to fly around in a spaceship and experience sexual satisfaction when I made discoveries…. I would fly away and orgasm all over the universe.” I guess everyone needs a plan after YouTybe. Allen’s YouTube channel Sufficiently Advanced is actually the culmination of a long journey through engineering -- and it’s one that led through Mythbusters. Does he wish he’d won the final? Did it work out even better in the end? We establish that Michael Reeves is indeed a “gremlin and a chimp” before launching into galvanic stimulation, anime oversaturation, cat girls ruling the earth, and what it’s like to be on meth for the sake of science. If you aren’t a fan of Allen Pan’s after this episode, you’re hopeless. Thanks to everyone who showed up to hang with us and Allen, and a special thanks to the Patrons who make this show possible each and every week! OH, AND KEVIN ASKED HIM THE FURRY QUESTION. Captain Disillusion Debunks Himself [Ep. 94]
There’s no more thorough expert at debunking all things visual than Captain Disillusion, and it’s the culmination of his journey from a Cold War-era circus family to the gold standard of YouTube VFX analysis. Alan details his process for debunking and how it fits within the context of internet cynicism and the audience’s need for a story. Should we aspire to be Forrest Gump, or do we really want to know how everything works? Happy and curious is good, and it’s nice to suspend disbelief here and there. Becoming a target of Captain D’s analysis depends in part on intent, and it’s a delicate science that sometimes looks slightly different in hindsight. Occasionally, something is straight up snake oil, and we call for a blend of Content Cop and the Captain. Is Captain Disillusion YouTube’s passion-driven version of Bob Ross? Where did that come from and how did he develop it through his formative years in the Soviet Union? Kevin points out how strongly that passion shows through in Alan’s ‘Flight of the Navigator’ video. Also, Alan’s pretty happy that he’s a “geriatric millennial,” and we launch into a discussion about the culture around him as the Soviet Union entered its final days. Adjustments are a big thing, and coming to the US in middle school is serious business. We talk what’s next for VFXcool, Alan’s favorite old Soviet movies, what it’s like to work with his metallic makeup, and more. And, of course, Conrad asks whether he calls himself Captain D in he bedroom. More people showed up for the live recording than we’ve had for any episode ever -- thanks to everyone who turned out, and especially to the Patrons who make this show possible every single week! Ep 93Joe Hanson Can’t Stop Making You Smart [Ep. 93]
Dr. Joe Hanson has made a case to be included on Science YouTube’s Mount Rushmore. It’s partly because he’s engaging and entertaining, but it also might have something to do with that doctorate in cell and molecular biology from UT-Austin. Every day, he’s proving that It’s Okay to Be Smart. Joe went from being a “pipette monkey” in a lab to having a solid presence on Tumblr, of all places. And his transition to YouTube ended up helping to fill that gap between fun kids’ science shows and boring, ultra-high-level programming. Traditional/Legacy media has a long way to go before it catches up to YouTube. A major aspect of YouTube is storytelling, even if it’s factual information. Joe’s thought a lot about what makes new information appealing or what might allow someone to change their mind about a complex issue -- and it’s really about guiding someone through intellectual discomfort. After Kevin’s realizing that we don’t need “Science Popes” and a rousing discussion of what science *really* is… and what it isn’t. Patrons jump in with questions about what it’s like to work for PBS, getting into science content in the first place, Joe’s sips from the fountain of youth, and when it’s a good time to play dumb. Thanks to Dr. Hanson for spending time with all of us in The Create Unknown universe, and a special thanks to the patrons who make this show happen each and every week. Ep 92Urban Rescue Ranch is King of the Texas Jungle [Ep. 92]
There is NO ONE on YouTube like Ben of the Urban Rescue Ranch. He’s got a kangaroo, a possum, a pair of rheas (including the frequently-violent Kevin)... so there’s a lot to talk about with his mini-farm and translating it to TikTok and YouTube. How’d he learn to be King of the Urban Rescue Jungle? From YouTube, naturally. Ben’s formal education wasn’t in animal wrangling, or even biology, but he’s built a tremendous knowledge base over time just by putting in the work. And it started with pigeons. The pandemic aligned a few stars for Ben, who was all of a sudden home to be able to do things like bottle-feeding babies every 4 hours. It was a huge boost for his channel and ones like it, since so many people’s attention turned toward the outdoors and self-sufficiency. Gardening and animals got hot, and fast. The bad news is that there just aren’t any vacations. Even so, Ben’s looking at expanding his operation. He needs more land for… well, everything. But the one thing he won’t get is a cassowary, and there are several very good reasons for that. Patrons jump in to ask questions about how badly it hurts when Kevin bites Ben, when he almost lost an eye, nearly killing himself by eating raw eggs, and the stresses of zookeeping and content creation. Thanks to everyone who showed up to a truly unique episode with Urban Rescue Ranch, and a special thanks to all the Patrons who make this show possible every single week! Ep 91Jeremy Scott Talks the Love & Hate of CinemaSins [Ep. 91]
Jeremy Scott has played a part in nearly 1,000 analytical video essays criticizing movies for their problems, so now it’s time to put CinemaSins himself on the hot seat. We start off with a quickie about near-perfect movies like District 19 and Finding Nemo and a throwback to some of our past animator guests. Jeremy’s noticed some patterns in perpetual sins in cinema, like the stylistic elements of dialogue that work just fine for a movie, but would be awful in real life -- and at least one filmmaker has said he’s used CinemaSins’ videos as a guide to avoid pitfalls in his own work. Opening with studio logos? Sin. Egregious critiques and inventing problems just to keep a job? Also probably a sin. It seems to have started for Jeremy with watching Terminator 2 on VHS, and in the 30 years since he’s developed a character with serious criticism interspersed with deliberate ignorance and comedic sarcasm. Sometimes that funnels viewers down a ‘hate to subscriber’ pipeline that actually works out for everyone. But it’s not all just movies for Jeremy -- he’s authored “The Ables” series of young adult novels about a gang of disabled superheroes who combine their powers, and he’s just about to drop “Original Sin: From Preacher’s Kid to the Creation of CinemaSins.” We’ve got a lot to talk about with the writing process and what it’s like to be so prolific in several different genres. Patrons ask about popcorn, how long it takes him to watch a movie, the first truly awful movie he ever walked out of, and more. Thanks to everyone who showed up for Jeremy’s sharp wit and tremendous expertise, and a special thanks to all the patrons who make this show possible every single week. You really are the best. Ep 90If Andy Kaufman Wrote Love Songs & Graduated Harvard [Ep. 90]
Austin Weber started off studying music at the Ivy League level, and years after a viral video of him singing ABBA’s “Mamma Mia” at various locations in Japan, he’s built an amazing career online. But who does he sound like, and is it even appropriate to suggest similarities to someone?! Feeling music is easier than talking about it, Austin says, before he goes into the other media he’s trained in -- including sculpting. Then we’ve got to ask what “electro acoustic composition” actually means before deciding whether one of Bach’s fugues is on par with Warrant’s Cherry Pie. Austin’s breakthrough video? It took him about 2 hours to make, and he wasn’t even going to bother to release it. We’re all pretty glad that he did, and now he’s developed and activated a broad network of very talented friends to keep progressing in the music world. Patrons jump in to ask Austin about TikTok, day jobs, favorite ice cream and more. Thanks to Austin for spending so much time with us, and thanks to everyone who showed up for the live recording -- and a special spoonful of gratitude slop goes into the bowls of our Patrons, who make this show happen each and every week.
