Oki’s Weird Stories Goes West
Thanks to MAINGEAR for speeding up everything for us. If you think you know about the famous Bundy Standoff, odds are pretty good that you don’t know the half of it. Our guest this week just recently returned from his documentarian journey to the Bundy ranch, and is right on the precipice of releasing a video to illuminate the story. This week, Oki’s Weird Stories returns to The Create Unknown to tell us all about it. We start off by asking how this entire trip came together in the first place. Oki tells us about his new method of in-person interviews for his videos, landing one such interview for an already skeptical Bundy family, and the surprising reception he was met with. Oki also gives us a comprehensive overview of the story itself, and there are quite a few more moving parts than you’d think. How do desert tortoises, cattle grazing, and the Homesteading Act all lead to an intense, western-style standoff and the occupation of a wildlife refuge? Listen in to find out. Then we try to get into the minds of all the key players. Do the Bundys regret what they’ve done? Did the government handle the situation properly? Why did it come to any of this in the first place? Oki sheds some light on those motivations, and Matt gives us some crucial historical context to understanding it all. After that, Oki catches us up to the current day. He tells us what happened to the Bundys after the situation blew over, where they are now, and what things might look like in the future. He also gives us a sneak peek into the timeline on his documentary of it all, which is sure to be nothing like any of us have seen before. We wrap things up on a different note, shifting to another great discussion about HEALTH. Much like TheGamerFromMars, Oki has also been on a fitness journey of his own recently. He updates us on that, his methods for getting in shape, and how it has improved day to day life overall. A big thank you to everyone who joined us live this week, and a special thank you to our patrons who make this show happen. We’ll see you all next week for another Matt & Kevin SOLO EPISODE! How To Ask for Help
Thanks to MAINGEAR for speeding up everything for us. Check out the VYBE line that’s making up the core of Matt’s new studio -- and use code CREATE for a free additional year of warranty on desktops: https://maingear.com/ref/656/ Join Our Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/thecreateunknown We talk a lot on this show about how important it is to GET HELP. Whether you’re working on a creative project, washing dishes at a restaurant, or moving stones and cutting brush in your backyard, someone lending a hand can be crucial. We don’t really talk about HOW to get that help though, so this week we decided to devote an entire episode to just that. Matt kicks off the episode by telling us about the Franklin Effect, and how asking people for help can actually make them like you more. It can be easy to think that you’re bothering someone by asking for their time, but the reality of the situation might just surprise you. Yes, it’s important to ask people for help. But it’s just as important to ask people for help the right way. We talk about the best way to go about reaching out to someone, and how best to value your time as well as theirs. This isn’t a foolproof system, though, and sometimes you just reach out to the wrong person. Kevin tells us a story of one of the few YouTubers on his very short list of creators he dislikes. Matt highlights the importance of dealing with rejection, and we connect it all to everyone’s favorite softcore adult film actor turned boxing movie legend, Sylvester Stallone. Thanks to everyone who tuned in live this week, and especially to our patrons who make this show happen each and every week. TheGamerFromMars talks Gains, Business and Bullies
Thanks to MAINGEAR for speeding up everything for us. Check out the VYBE line that’s making up the core of Matt’s new studio -- and use code CREATE for a free additional year of warranty on desktops: https://maingear.com/ref/656/ Join Our Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/thecreateunknown In November of 2009, Art (aka TheGamerFromMars) uploaded his very first video, a scathing review of the Atari 2600 game “Aqua Adventures.” Now, thirteen years and 275 million views later, Art creates some of the most gripping documentarian-style content on the platform. His transformation, both in his content and his physique, is unlike anything else on YouTube today, and now he’s entering The Create Unknown to tell us all about it. As the master of YouTube thumbnail clickbait, Art has crafted some truly titillating titles for his videos. So, naturally, we want to know what we would use to clickbait Art himself. We also dive into his storied history of shadowbans, and how hard the adpocalypse really hit him. We dive a little deeper into that rabbit hole to find what kinds of things are causing demonetization to happen, and Art gives us some solid actionable advice to get around these issues. We also talk a little about twitter, and just how crucial it can be for creators to have a following on the platform. Aside from being a successful creator, Art also runs “NanoZebra” – a company with the sole mission of getting sponsored messages for creators. He tells us about his inspiration for starting the company, some of his day to day operations, and if you can believe it, Matt connects it all to obscure WWII cargo cults. Then we address the big one – Art’s gigantic muscles. He talks about his long journey toward changing his lifestyle, and how cyberbullying actually made him healthier. We also launch into a substantial Planet Fitness rant, and how the company actually LOSES money on Art. We round things out with some discussion on Art’s incredible documentary series on TCU alumnus Chris Chan, the modern paradox of loneliness, and the allure of the dysfunctional. TheOdd1sOut Talks Netflix & Furries
Thanks to MAINGEAR for speeding up everything for us. Check out the VYBE line that’s making up the core of Matt’s new studio -- and use code CREATE for a free additional year of warranty on desktops: https://maingear.com/ref/656/ Join Our Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/thecreateunknown In the world of creatives, a balance of overflowing creativity and intense business acumen are a rarity. James Rallison (better known as TheOdd1sOut) is one of those rare people. His simple, yet iconic, marshmallow character design has catapulted him to YouTube stardom, and since then he’s launched many successful projects, including his hit Netflix animated series “Oddballs,” the first two seasons of which are streaming now. This week, he’s entering The Create Unknown to impart his animator’s wisdom onto all of us. To start things off, we dive into James’ recent foray into the world of GAMBLING. He tells us his foolproof roulette strategy that wound up winning him 200 Australian dollars, but as it turns out, it really isn’t as easy to hoodwink the house as it may seem. Then Kevin and James reminisce about last year’s VidCon, and their brief but memorable meetup at the event. James has been a featured creator at the convention for over half a decade now, and he tells us about all the changes and surprises that he’s seen over the years. James also marks a TCU milestone for us as our first ever guest with their very own Netflix show. He lets us in on the process of making “Oddballs,” and we also get a look at the astonishing team he’s put together to keep making his YouTube content. James has found massive success in nearly every market he’s touched, but we’re curious to get a peak behind the scenes at his professional life. Matt asks if James has had any projects go sour, and Kevin wants to know exactly how he juggles all these projects to stay on top. For fans of James’ content – don’t worry. We spend the latter half of the episode talking about many Odd1sOut staples, from James’ infamous time working in the fast food industry, to the recent killing of the anthropomorphic M&Ms, and even an exclusive update into his furry journey. We finish out the episode with some questions from our patrons who want to know about James’ future furry plans, comic/animation advice, face reveals, and much much more. Thank you to everyone who tuned in live this week, and a big shout out to all of our supportive patrons. We’ll see you all next week for an extraterrestrial episode with TheGamerFromMars! The Return of Mind Blow

Check out the VYBE line that’s making up the core of Matt’s new studio -- and use code CREATE for a free additional year of warranty on desktops: https://maingear.com/ref/656/ Join Our Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/thecreateunknown After a long four-year hiatus, the hit Vsauce2 series “Mind Blow” is BACK, and it’s all thanks to viewers and listeners such as yourself. It’s easy to get wrapped up in all the great things creators do, but we spend some time this episode discussing just how vitally important and influential the audience is. We kick things off by extending a huge thank you to all the Patreon supporters who helped bring Mind Blow back – it really could not have happened without you. Contrary to popular belief, Kevin actually isn’t a rich, extravagant YouTuber like his subscriber count may make you think. We talk about the misconceptions people have about the financial side of being a creator, and how so many of the revenue streams in online entertainment have changed over the years. It’s been a pretty big undertaking to bring Mind Blow back, and Kevin wanted to make sure he did it right. He talks a little bit about the team he brought on to make the project better than ever, and the absolutely crucial role that the patrons play. Oh, and Kevin talks about his primal rage for “smashing that like button.” We finish out the episode by talking about the state of titles on YouTube today, and the strangely regressive turn they’ve taken. Kevin likens it to a 2013 Buzzfeed article, while Matt actually thinks there’s more to it than you might believe. Thanks to everyone who joined us for the live show, thank you to all our wonderful patrons, and a special shout out this week to all of the new patrons of Mind Blow. Getting Away With Murder w/ That Chapter
Thanks to MAINGEAR for speeding up everything for us. Check out the VYBE line that’s making up the core of Matt’s new studio -- and use code CREATE for a free additional year of warranty on desktops: https://maingear.com/ref/656/ Join Our Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/thecreateunknown Making true crime content can be a tough line to walk. When you’re dealing with tantalizingly grim yet harrowingly true stories, it can be difficult to convey those tales in a way that is both tactful and entertaining at the same time. Luckily, Mike from That Chapter has mastered that, and his gifted approach to storytelling has helped him reach an audience of millions for over half a decade now. With such a vast knowledge of cases under his belt, Mike knows plenty of stories of people who murder and get caught. We flip that on its head, though, and ask him how he’d get away with it. Matt also tells us the great lengths he would go to to protect his prized cat. A lot of these murder cases aren’t exactly black and white, and sometimes there’s a moral gray area that can get a little confusing. We ask Mike about that gray area, and whether or not he’s ever felt sympathy for the perpetrators. We talk about the old “nurture vs. nature” debate, and get into all the dumb things people have done to get caught. Over the years, it’s been increasingly difficult to get sensitive content monetized on YouTube, and true crime has been no exception to that rule. Mike tells us how he’s been able to keep himself afloat through all those tribulations, and what methods work to keep his content on the map. We also get an exclusive look at the process of making a That Chapter video, and how Mike has created such a captivating energy for his content. He tells us about the importance of fan interaction when it comes to selecting a good story, and how his casual approach to storytelling has truly set him apart from the rest. Kevin also gets to add another case to his collection that proves his theory that YouTubers always have some sort of musical background. Mike tells us some stories from his glory days of playing in bands, his ironic aversion to traditional Irish music, and his contrarian love for U2. We finish things off with some questions from our patrons who want to know about any stand out cases that Mike has come across, the negative side effects of true crime, and so much more. Thanks to everyone who joined the live show this week, and a special shout out to our patrons. You really do make this show happen. Losing the Mask with Charles Khan
Thanks to MAINGEAR for speeding up everything for us. His careful curation of content has amassed him an audience of thousands across multiple platforms, and for good reason. Maintaining a meme empire isn’t easy though, and nobody understands that better than Charles. But, how does one become a “meme bastard” like Charles? Turns out the answer isn’t as simple as you might think, and it involves a healthy amount of professional wrestling with a side of deplatforming. Charles also drops some hard knowledge on the value of just simply getting things done. Then we talk a little bit about the power of simplicity – a good idea doesn’t necessarily mean a complicated one. When you start making something short that accomplishes something simple, it’s pretty easy to build that content up over time, and Charles has some great advice on how to make that happen. Charles also opens our minds to something that often goes overlooked online: curiosity. If you want to be a content creator, and you’ve got something you’re interested in, there might be more doors open to you than you think. You don’t necessarily have to be a “YouTube person” to be on YouTube. It’s rare to find someone in internet media who is regularly and consistently ahead of the game. Charles is one of those people. We talk a bit about healthy obsession and how that extends into good work habits, as well as the difference between being happy and being satisfied. We close out the episode with two of our heaviest hitting and longest standing TCU questions, and Charles answers in kind. We finally get a return of the FURSONA question, and Charles gives us his fresh take on what makes an interesting person. Thank you to everyone who tuned into this week, and thanks especially to our wonderful patrons. We couldn’t do it without you. We’ll see you all next week for an episode with THAT CHAPTER! Saving Humanity with AlternateHistoryHub
Thanks to MAINGEAR for speeding up everything for us. Check out the VYBE line that’s making up the core of Matt’s new studio -- and use code CREATE for a free additional year of warranty on desktops: https://maingear.com/ref/656/ Join Our Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/thecreateunknown It takes a special kind of mind to be able to look into the past and figure out what *could* have happened, rather than what actually did. A year ago we shared a romantic Valentine’s date with Cody from Alternate History Hub who does exactly that, and this week he’s entering The Create Unknown once again to put those speculative skills to the test. We begin by traveling back in time, but not as far back as you might think. The last few months have been a bit of a whirlwind for Cody – not only did he become a father, but he’s also been fiercely battling the elements in Texas as they wreak havoc on his home. Despite all that, he’s still been able to stay relatively on track, and he lets us in on just how he does it. Cody also tells us about his most recent trip to the cinema to see the critically acclaimed “Puss In Boots: The Last Wish,” and how a quick meme he made about the film sparked a whole Twitter saga like he’d never seen before. We dive into the power a joke like that can have, and the insane levels of community that pop up on platforms like this. We take that idea and put it into the context of the online history community, which Cody knows all too well. We talk about the near-factionalism that appears on both sides of the aisle, their unique meme cultures, and how that has evolved over the years. We take that in a pretty philosophical route, and Matt tells the best joke he might ever make. This episode, we decided to tackle a pretty big topic: SAVING HUMANITY. In a world that is getting more segmented every day, things can start to look pretty grim. But luckily, Cody has some ideas to fix it. Things like broken personal lives and internet attachment are growing concerns in the modern age, but Cody’s got a pretty positive outlook on it all. We cap things off with an interesting question from one of our patrons, who wants to know what Cody would collectively gaslight us all about if he had the opportunity to create a Mandela Effect of his own. Then he drops some wisdom on us about what he thinks makes an interesting person, as well as some great advice about making content of your own. Thanks to everyone who joined us live this week, and a special thank you to our patrons who make this show happen. You guys are the best. Adults Only with Billy The Fridge

Check out the VYBE line that’s making up the core of Matt’s new studio -- and use code CREATE for a free additional year of warranty on desktops: https://maingear.com/ref/656/ Join Our Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/thecreateunknown We talk to a lot of multi talented creators on this show, but this week’s guest might just take the cake. From YouTube creator to rapper, wrestler, and Magic The Gathering extraordinaire, it’s tough to put all of his accomplishments on paper. This week, he’s entering The Create Unknown to tell us all how William “The Fridge” Berry became the famed Billy The Fridge. We start off by talking about the state of The Fridge now, Billy’s prospects for 2023, and how his “roll with the punches” attitude really works to his benefit. Billy also lets us in on his process for choosing new projects, and it might not be what you think. It’s no secret that Billy’s an entertaining guy, and it certainly helps that he got his start so early in life. He tells us about his early days of entertaining and how that molded him into the sensation he is today. We also get a peek at the humble beginnings of his rap career, and how a fine establishment called The Lusty Lady helped skyrocket him to the top. Then we take a little trip to Walmart, where Billy went viral for carrying a child around in a makeshift papoose. He tells us about all the hype and concern that video generated, and about how it landed him a spot in the esteemed People of Walmart coloring book. We also take a little time this episode to discuss some current events. We respond to the outrage of Mr. Beast’s blindness curing video, and Billy gives us his perspective on the whole situation. There’s no doubt that “Billy The Fridge” is an iconic name. When you hear that, you remember it. We get to the bottom of where that name came from, and how William Berry became as iconic as his pirate namesake. We finish out the episode by talking a little Magic: The Gathering, and how sheets of cardboard kept Billy off of the drug-filled streets of 1990s Seattle. While Kurt Cobain was out doing drugs and writing “In Utero,” Billy studied the card, and he’s better because of it. Thanks to everyone who joined us live, and a special shoutout to our patrons who make this show happen each and every week. You guys are the best. The Hilarious World of Caddicarus
Thanks to MAINGEAR for speeding up everything for us. Check out the VYBE line that’s making up the core of Matt’s new studio -- and use code CREATE for a free additional year of warranty on desktops: https://maingear.com/ref/656/ Join Our Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/thecreateunknown We talk a lot on this show about the importance of change when it comes to being a creator. Jim “Caddicarus” Caddick is no stranger to that process, and his ability to adapt has produced some of YouTube’s best gaming content to date. This week, Jim is entering The Create Unknown to shed some light on that process, and how critical change can be. We start off by looking into the past. We want to know why each of Jim’s videos pre-2020 makes it very clear that they are, in fact, “[OLD].” He tells us about his change of heart when it came to content creation, and we get into just how important a first impression is. The balance between being funny and being serious can be a tough one to find, and it’s something the Jon Stewarts and the Videogamedunkies of the world wrestle with constantly. Jim lets us in on his secret to finding that balance in his own life, and how caring TOO much can actually get in the way of things. Jim is renowned for his affinity for the Playstation 1 – something that shines through in most every video he makes. He has a real love for all things PS1, and even the most hated games find a special place in his heart. We dive into some of the most universally hated games, and from Bubsy 3D to A Bug’s Life, Jim’s got a soft spot for them all. As a creator, making an effective ad read can be tough. You don’t want to come off as a sellout, but at the same time, you’ve got bills to pay. Luckily, Jim’s found the perfect system. We dissect his special ad read character “Spons,” the reception it gets from his fans, and how his sponsors handle it all. Making a Caddicarus video is hard work. If you don’t believe it, you can see for yourself in Jim’s illuminating special “The Exhausting World of Making a Caddicarus Video” (check it out here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lz13cxZNTCo&ab_channel=Caddicarus). We pick his brain about that process, the irony of creating that behind the scenes look, and how that has translated into his highly successful blu-ray project. We close out the episode with some questions from our patrons who want to know about Jim’s most daunting project, his video game guilty pleasures, beans on toast, and so much more. Thank you to all our live listeners this week, and a huge shout-out to each and every one of our patrons. You make this show happen. We’ll be back next week with BILLY THE FRIDGE! You love anime. Managing Success with Reed Duchscher
Thanks to MAINGEAR for speeding up everything for us. As the founding CEO of the Night Media talent agency, Reed represents some of the biggest creators on the platform – people like Mr. Beast, Hasan Piker, and even TCU alumnus Jschlatt couldn’t do what they do without him in their corner. We start off by asking Reed about his time working in football of all things, and the key differences between collaborating with NFL stars and YouTubers. He sheds some light on the unmatched entrepreneurial spirit of creators today, and we dive into how that’s changed over the years. We talk pretty regularly about the importance of working with other people, no matter what your project is, and nobody exemplifies that better than Reed. There are so many roles that need to be filled on a creator’s team, and he gives us some insight into how he’s built a system to satisfy that and create real, long-term success. There’s been a lot of uncertainty about the future of content creation with short form content in the mix, but Reed is as optimistic as ever. He drops some hard knowledge as to why now more than ever is the best time to create, and provides some pretty easy to follow steps for our smaller creators in the audience, as well as those who may feel like they’ve hit their peak. We’re at an interesting point in entertainment history where artists are expected not only to create, but to be good people more than they ever have been. Reed talks about what it’s like to manage artists and creatives at a time like this, and how to work with the scrutiny of the public eye. The landscape for online media is constantly changing, and it doesn’t look like it’s going to slow down any time soon. Kevin talks about his theory of the end of good content ideas, and Reed shares his thoughts on the hierarchy of YouTube in general. We round out the episode with some questions from our patrons who want to know about the balance of quality and quantity, the threat of YouTube demonetization, and the biggest creator RED FLAGS. Thanks to everyone who joined us live, and to our patrons who make this show happen. We’ll see you all next week for a thrilling episode with CADDICARUS! You love anime. You love tea. How To Guarantee You Won’t Make It
Thanks to MAINGEAR for speeding up everything for us. Check out the VYBE line that’s making up the core of Matt’s new studio -- and use code CREATE for a free additional year of warranty on desktops: https://maingear.com/ref/656/ Join Our Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/thecreateunknown Unfortunately AlternateHistoryHub had to cancel this week, so we had to shift gears a bit. No need to worry, he’s alright and he’ll be back for another episode soon, but we thought we’d use the time this week to give you some more invaluable advice. So, if you’re in the market to fail, you’re in luck because we’ve come up with six easy steps to guarantee you won’t make it. Step number one is pretty simple: if you want to be unsuccessful, be resentful. We start by talking about some of the exceptions to the rule who’ve found success just by being resentful, but it comes at a cost. One way or another, that resentment doesn’t last, and it’s more than likely to turn sour for you pretty quickly. Our second step is to be a DISASTER. If you don’t get the simple stuff in your life together, the rest isn’t far behind. Getting on top of the basics is one of the most valuable things you can do, not only for your health and well being, but to keep yourself prepared for any surprises that might get thrown your way. If you really don’t want to make it anywhere, one of the best things you can do is just wait around and hope to get lucky. As it turns out, though, luck isn’t entirely serendipitous. The odds of something just falling into your lap on a whim are slim to none, and even if it does happen, it won’t matter much if you aren’t ready for it. It’s pretty easy to completely isolate yourself these days, and there’s plenty of cold hard facts out there that say more people are doing exactly that. After all, everything you could ever want to do that suits your interests is right at your fingertips, so why wouldn’t you? Step five is most applicable to our creatives in the crowd. If you don’t want to make it, obsess over originality. Because if you do, odds are you won’t wind up making anything at all. It’s easy to get bogged down in trying to make something entirely new, so your best bet at making something is to just throw that out the window in the first place. Our final rule for failure is a short one – say no. If the nervous part of you gives in, and you say no to every opportunity that comes your way, pretty soon you’re going to run out of opportunities. You don’t know what saying yes to something might lead to, so you might as well roll the dice and take that chance, because turning it down is guaranteed to bring nothing at all. Thanks to everyone who tuned in live this week, and to all our patrons who make every single episode happen. We’ll be back next week for an exciting episode with Reed Duchscher! You love anime. New Year’s Resolutions Are Trash

This week, we’re celebrating the New Year by looking forward to the FUTURE and all the exciting things to come. We come out of the gates strong this episode and get right to the point: New Year’s resolutions are dumb. People try to change too dramatically at once, and it just doesn’t work out. But lucky for you, we’ve come up with a much better system for annual improvement: the New Year’s GRINDolution. The Grindolution is all about working in small increments and getting in the GROOVE. Kevin talks about his commitment to drawing one cartoon a week to post on social media, and we discuss how much easier it can be to do something on a weekly basis instead of waiting around to get it done. Kevin’s also got big plans for Vsauce2 this year. He spent most of 2022 building up different audiences on different platforms, and he’s looking forward to bringing even more content to the table in ‘23. We also tease a bit of what’s to come in the TCUniverse this year, and why it’s all about BALL NUDGING. Matt also has some very exciting projects on the horizon as he continues to break into the world of streaming. He gives us the breakdown on his setup, the projects he’s got going, and just how easy and enjoyable it is for him to do. From cigar box ukuleles to rusted old gun barrels, Matt is making it ALL on Twitch. You’re gonna wanna check it out: https://www.twitch.tv/thecreateunknown The streams have been going well, but that’s only because Matt did it the exact right way: he did it badly, then he did it better. Not only is it a great way to save time and avoid HUGE regret, but it’s really the best way to find out if you actually enjoy doing a thing. We round things out by talking about all things TCU, and there really is a lot to look forward to. Not only are we keeping up our weekly highlights for all our YouTube viewers, but we’re also looking at really expanding our operation this year, so STAY TUNED. Thank you all for your support over the past year, and thanks to our patrons who make this show happen every single week. You guys are all the best. We’ll be back next week, so see you then! Why Do We Do Anything?
Thanks to MAINGEAR for speeding up everything for us. Check out the VYBE line that’s making up the core of Matt’s new studio -- and use code CREATE for a free additional year of warranty on desktops: https://maingear.com/ref/656/ Join Our Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/thecreateunknown For the last few weeks of 2022, we’ve been getting pretty existential. We’ve provided some valuable rules for life, estimated the longevity of YouTube, and even taught you how to avoid being a LOSER. But, for our very special year-end episode, we decided to take on the biggest question of them all, the one to tie them all together – what’s the point? Why do we even do anything? We kick things off by reading the tweet that started this whole discussion. The gist is that kids these days are doing NOTHING, and there’s a lot to unpack there. The internet makes things a lot easier for many of us, but it also comes with its own share of problems. When it’s easy to find a niche for yourself and your interests, it’s a whole lot harder to go outside of yourself and actually DO anything. Then Kevin comes to the conclusion that things that used to be pretty common knowledge aren’t so universally understood anymore. We pick apart a tweet that criticizes the holiday season, claiming that everybody should just buy their own gifts to be happy, and we get into just how wrong that mentality can be. It might be tough, but everybody has to come up with a reason to do something, and why it matters in the first place. Continuing with our holiday theme, we discuss why we even ask ourselves what the meaning of Christmas is, and why it’s important to remind yourself why you do what you do. That comes with some traps of its own though, and we lay out just how to avoid them to stay productive when you have to come up with a reason for it all. Then Kevin takes us in a bit of a grim direction, but it’s a necessary detour. We talk about the sadness of losing a child versus the acceptance of losing someone elderly, and the importance of potential. Almost everyone agrees that potential is a valuable thing, and if that’s the case, don’t you have the obligation to do something with yours? We end on an optimistic note by talking about the infectiousness of caring. If you put in the effort and DO something, people are gonna notice. When they do, it spreads like a disease, and providing that example for somebody is one of the best things you can do. We want to thank everyone for another wonderful year of The Create Unknown. How Not To Be A Loser

At the risk of losing a good chunk of our listeners, we’re calling out all the LOSERS in our audience, and we’re gonna tell you how to avoid being one. Tom Segura got this ball rolling for us when he did the exact same thing. He’d been getting a lot of comments from fans who complained about how he used his comedic earnings, and about how they could hardly afford rent. Tom called those people losers, which is bold, but he’s right. We took that a step further to boil down exactly why it’s so unhealthy. There are few things that are more destructive and unhealthy than envy and resentment. It’s pretty natural to feel those things, but surprisingly, acting on either of them doesn’t really do anything to solve your problems. Being angry isn’t a substitute for any kind of action. We also take a look at some shining examples of what you SHOULD be doing instead of seething. If you get wrapped up in somebody else’s success when you think you should be doing better, it’s not going to work out well for you at all. Then Kevin gives us the key to it all, the most important thing to remember if you don’t want to be a loser, and it’s much simpler than you might think. There’s only so much time in the day, and only so many opportunities presented to you – make sure you take advantage of as much as you can. Kevin also imparts some Yoda-like wisdom onto us about the stages of this sort of thing: first comes naivety, then cynicism, and finally at the top is wisdom. It’s pretty normal to go through all these, but it isn’t until you reach that last phase that you can put it all in perspective. It’s time to take that next step. We finish up with a couple questions from our patrons who want to know how to cope with a loved one being affected by your failures, the ethics of recreational hating, the loser paradox, and so much more. Thanks to everyone who joined us live, and a special shoutout to all the patrons who make this show happen. We’ll see you next week! You love anime. You love tea. Is YouTube Running Out of Ideas?
Thanks to MAINGEAR for speeding up everything for us. Check out the VYBE line that’s making up the core of Matt’s new studio -- and use code CREATE for a free additional year of warranty on desktops: https://maingear.com/ref/656/ Join Our Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/thecreateunknown Have you ever wondered what it would be like if Godzilla was actually real? Well you certainly wouldn’t be the first, and there are a surprising number of YouTube videos out there that’ll answer that question for you. This episode we’re diving into just why that is, and we go so far as to answer a pretty big question: are we running out of YouTube videos? Kevin is concerned that there’s only so many videos you can make about novel concepts, and we might be approaching the end of that rope. Matt has some theories as to why duplicates are already showing up, and why they still perform so well. Then we get historical and reminisce about the glory days of television. TV might not be doing so hot now, but there was a time where dozens of shows were getting made that won’t ever see the light of day again. That’s pretty different from the permanence of YouTube, though, which is starting to pose some problems of its own. We also take a look at one creators’ biggest competitors today: time. Making a fresh new video now is a lot harder than it was back in the early days. You might not realize it, but whenever you hit that “upload” button, you’re not just competing with everything new on YouTube, you’re competing with the whole catalog. We’ll admit it – the whole concept seems pretty grim. But don’t let that discourage you. Just because something’s been done before, doesn’t mean it’s impossible to give it a new spin. Even if an idea has already been explored, you can always insert your own personality and provide a fresh perspective. We finish out the episode with some questions from our patrons who want to know if doing a spin on an older topic is just as valid as making something entirely new, and if there’s a finish line to monetizable ideas. You Owe People Your Creativity

Every week on The Create Unknown we talk about Making Something and Meaning something, and in this episode, Kevin’s rule deals with exactly that. Everybody remembers the iconic line from Spiderman: “with great power comes great responsibility.” Turns out, as a creative, you also have a great responsibility to do just that: create. Kevin talks about his experience drawing cartoon potatoes in high school, and how revisiting that recently has generated so much hype. But what if you aren’t a creative person? Well, appreciating the art of others is definitely an art in itself. People like Rick Beato spend much more time appreciating their art than creating it, and there’s a reason they’re so successful. If there’s something you might not be able to do, appreciating it is sometimes just as great. There’s a big trap that people fall into when it comes to creativity, though. When you have a great idea in your head, it’s easy to want to jump right to the end of that plan – but you can’t. The best thing you can do is start small, and build from there. It’s a unique thing to have a creative mind, and it’s important to use it as best you can. We also tackle a harsh truth that almost no one wants to talk about: everyone truly is different. No two people think the same, or have the same set of skills. Our long time Baby Gang member Andy feels that he might fall short in the creative department and times, but he also literally FLIES PLANES. How many people can say they do that? We finish out with some questions from our patrons who want to know about the importance of disposable ideas, the comic to animation pipeline, and just how crucial Kevin’s unique lighting setup is to his creativity. Thank you to everyone who joined us for our return this week, and thank you to our patrons for your continued support in making this show happen. We’ve been having a lot of fun making these episodes, and we hope you can learn something from them. We’ll see you next week! You love anime. You love tea. TCU Rule #2: You Are What You Do
Post your first job for FREE: linkedin.com/create Thanks to MAINGEAR for speeding up everything for us. Check out the VYBE line that’s making up the core of Matt’s new studio -- and use code CREATE for a free additional year of warranty on desktops: https://maingear.com/ref/656/ Join Our Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/thecreateunknown This week we’re setting out to tackle a single question – who are you? What is it that makes you, you? On this installment of TCU’s Rules for Life, Matt’s got the answer for you, and it’s a deceptively simple one. There’s a good chance you have some misconceptions about your own identity. Oftentimes you might think it has a lot to do with what you believe, or what you think, but that’s just not the case. It’s what you actually DO that defines you. Even the results of what you do are less important than actually just doing the thing. This rule is a pretty powerful one, but it isn’t without its problems. We outline the biggest pitfall in trying this philosophy, and how easy it is to fall into. Just wanting to do something isn’t nearly the same as setting out to do it, and while things like video games, podcasts, and YouTube videos are great for enjoyment, odds are they’re not going to get you to where you need to go. Matt hates life hacks. Hates ‘em. And unless you’re Mark Cuban, you probably don’t need them. We do have a good alternative, though, and it’s something far more useful, especially if you’re in any kind of a bad place. Nothing gets your life back on track like working hard on yourself, and shortcuts won’t help that. Then we get a little grim, but for good reason. You may not think about it, but you are constantly writing your own obituary, and so is everybody else. When you’re gone, people can’t remember you for what you thought about, or for what you almost did. How could they? It’s the things you actually do that count. We borrow some wisdom from the KGB of all places, and how the people around you might just know you better than you do. Matt also gives us some of his bowling wisdom, and how important it is to take each day one “frame” at a time. We close out the episode with a couple questions from our patrons who get just as introspective as we do. How do you know if a decision is the right one? What if it is right, but it makes life harder? Thanks to everyone who joined us live this week, and a big thank you to our patrons who make this show happen. Alec from Technology Connections is here to fix that, and his fascination for the mundane is the source of some of YouTube’s best content to date. Alec’s insatiable curiosity illuminates the importance of humanity’s greatest inventions, the interconnectedness of the modern world, and why nobody cares about any of it. Matt and Kevin talk about their attempts to bring that curiosity to your TV set – something Bjork could tell you a lot about. We also figure out why Alec is the internet’s resident dishwasher expert, and how you’ve probably been using them wrong. Not all inventions are as perfect as they should be, though, and can openers are certainly behind the curve. Alec flexes his technological muscles by bringing us the can opener of the FUTURE. It turns out people really had “built a better mousetrap” to get you your Campbell’s soup, but nobody is using it yet. It’s easy to appreciate a great technological leap, especially when you can think of the alternative to using it. That gets a little tougher to do in the online era. Sure, the internet is amazing, but what is the alternative? What did the computer replace? Does Alec hate digital photographers? We just don’t know. We talk about so many of technology’s advancements, but the reality is that it’s slowing down. Kevin highlights the struggles that tech companies are having today, and we give consumers the credit they’re due for realizing when they’re being swindled. We also get deep into the supposed uselessness of the Metaverse, and how it does the opposite of what we all need right now. Our patrons close out the episode with some excellent questions for Alec about Tech Connections videos of the past, They Might Be Giants, and the never ending war of belts versus suspenders. TCU Rules for Life #1: Think, Don’t Seethe
Thanks to MAINGEAR for speeding up everything for us. But lucky for YOU, dear listener, Kevin Lieber’s got you covered with his rules for understanding it all. This episode we dive deep into one of those rules, and how a tweet about the alleged evils of the late Blockbuster Video started it all. Kevin kicks things off by talking about the futility of online rage, and how it’s often fueled by being completely wrong in the first place. Why do people get so mad, though? Is there even a reason to begin with? Is twitter the true culprit here? Matt gives us his hottest, spiciest, most cancellable take yet. He’s got some opinions on small business, and he’s tired of playing the world’s worst game of fiscal charades. He also clues us into the economic appendage that small businesses ACTUALLY represent. In his worldly wisdom, Kevin has some real solutions for the “twitter rage conundrum.” We talk about the nuance that most issues have, and how assuming you understand their complexities is a big mistake. You know what they say about assuming – don’t. We also take some wisdom from the philanthropy of U2’s Bono, and how he came to a similar realization. To round things out, we boil it all down to one simple rule: if someone is angry over something, that doesn’t always mean they know what they’re talking about. Thanks to everybody who listened in live this week, and a big thanks to all our Patrons who make this show happen. We couldn’t do it without you. Ian Hecox and the Legend of Smosh
Post your first job for FREE: linkedin.com/create Thanks to MAINGEAR for speeding up everything for us. Check out the VYBE line that’s making up the core of Matt’s new studio -- and use code CREATE for a free additional year of warranty on desktops: https://maingear.com/ref/656/ Join Our Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/thecreateunknown In the year 2022, very few of YouTube’s founding creators remain at the top of their craft – Ian Hecox is the exception. Through some poorly aged content, hairy legal battles, and a departure of one of their main personalities, Smosh remains resolute, and they owe a lot of that to their incredible fans. Ian also walks us through keeping Smosh’s content fresh, and his tried-and-true mentality on being a creator. His Rocky Balboa-like endurance has kept him passionate for seventeen wonderful years of content, proving to us all that it truly is more of a marathon than a sprint. Kevin and Ian reminisce on the “good ole days” of YouTube, getting retrospective about the so-called sellouts of the time and how they stack up to their RAID: Shadow Legends counterparts of now. Ian may finally have convinced people that being a YouTuber is a legitimate, viable career, but Kevin hasn’t had the same luck, and he tells us that he’s still fighting that good fight. If you were on YouTube back in 2012, you probably remember the “grand promise” that creators were given. We talk about the ludicrous amount of money being thrown at YouTube in those days, and the relationship it has to the hype of today’s esports. MCN’s may have sounded enticing to some creators back in the day, but Ian exposes the truly bad business model they were built on. Creators have much more business acumen now than ever, and companies like Mythical Entertainment who acquired Smosh are proof. We round out the Smosh discussion by celebrating the team of almost 40 employees at the company now, and by finding out just what Ian does on a day-to-day basis. While he spends a lot of time flexing his business muscles, that hasn’t sapped his love for being on camera. He also explains the difficulty of putting a mission statement together for a channel like Smosh, and more importantly, how their previous employers failed. Our Patrons join us to ask Ian about some of Smosh’s misunderstood projects, early regrets, and his favorite videos of yesteryear. It was an absolute pleasure having Ian on to get some insight into the real business of being a creator. He is living proof of the importance of so many values we talk about here on The Create Unknown, and we can’t wait to see what the next seventeen years will bring. Thank you to all who joined us for the live show this week, and a huge shout out to our Patrons – you make this show happen. Next week: a Matt and Kevin guide to understanding the world. Be there! Bobby Duke on Optimizing an Artist’s Life
Thanks to MAINGEAR for speeding up everything for us. Check out the VYBE line that’s making up the core of Matt’s new studio -- and use code CREATE for a free additional year of warranty on desktops: https://maingear.com/ref/656/ Join Our Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/thecreateunknown It’s not easy to put a label on Bobby Duke. Is he an artist? A creator? 1,000 words fit his work, and they all seem to be appropriate. Whether it’s a giant sculpture or turning a normal pencil into a chain link non-pencil, Bobby can envision it and then do it – and it all started with a whittled dagger. Kevin’s theory of artistic and musical parents continues to be true, which is why Bobby is both an accomplished artist and a capable video editor. Bobby has a lot on his plate though, including juggling an addictive personality that’s affected his work. He goes into fantastic detail not just about how he schedules and segments his work now, but also why he has to do it (and what happens when he doesn’t). Matt tells his story about having to work from bed 6 months ago to hauling rocks after a work day now, while Bobby gets down to brass tacks with a dose of reality: things are going to be bad sometimes, and there are constant opportunities to stray from the path you need to be on. Flexibility is a double-edged sword that’s both amazing and ruinous, and Bobby gets a little closer to mastering that each day. Putting your phone down helps. We recognize that it’s easier to process these tradeoffs and make wiser decisions – and also know when we haven’t – when we’re older, but how do you help a younger creative go about their work and life optimally? Well… it’s not as easy as just telling them. Kevin might have a solution: convince young people to treat themselves as if they’re important, which they are. Patrons hop in to ask about forbidden builds, balancing art with its visual presentation, and Bobby’s day to day inspirations. This was a FANTASTIC episode about the reality of being a creator – which, honestly, is usually at the crux of what someone makes. Harnessing talent and creating the conditions for that talent to function might actually be more important. Thanks to everyone who came out for the live show, and a special thanks to the Patrons who make this show happen each and every week. Next week, Ian Hecox from SMOSH! You love anime. You love tea. Alchemy and Dissolving Bodies with NileRed
Thanks to MAINGEAR for speeding up everything for us. Check out the VYBE line that’s making up the core of Matt’s new studio -- and use code CREATE for a free additional year of warranty on desktops: https://maingear.com/ref/656/ Join Our Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/thecreateunknown When we first met NileRed several years ago, we talked about making moonshine out of toilet paper. A few months later, he’d actually figured out how to do it. No one makes chemistry more interesting or engaging than Nigel, and his experiments run the range from scientific to absurd. But which is more satisfying, creating or destroying? We quickly descend into the depths of the important stuff: dissolving bodies with chemicals. And it’s actually a bit tougher to do at scale than it seems from Nigel’s food dissolving videos. Despite not having released a main channel video in 7 months, he’s been busier than ever – so busy that he might just run out of science. Nigel offers some of the best creative advice we’ve ever had on TCU, which is to avoid getting too far ahead of yourself. He says it’s like getting a gym membership to inspire (really, force) yourself to actually go to the gym. Matt points out that even if this works, it’s usually not an organic result that’ll stick. Do you need a $2,000 budget to get started in chemistry? Probably not. Nigel goes into his past and how he arrived at today – a combination of academic work, disillusionment with formal chemistry study, and figuring out how to edit videos. Kevin senses a strain of music in NileRed videos… and it turns out that he’s right. After Kevin’s tale of a bizarre coworker, Patrons launch into questions about specific elements/chemical processes, the power of the Green Weenie, what to do with $20 at Walmart, and specialization in chemistry. Nigel is one of the sharpest, most talented people we’ve ever met (and he’s got one of the best voices), and everyone who came out for the live show witnessed it firsthand. Jabrils on AI and Zoomer Loneliness
Thanks to MAINGEAR for speeding up everything for us. Check out the VYBE line that’s making up the core of Matt’s new studio -- and use code CREATE for a free additional year of warranty on desktops: https://maingear.com/ref/656/ Join Our Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/thecreateunknown Jabrils is more than grilled cheese. He’s uniquely positioned to weigh in on everything from what artificial intelligence will do for us – and to us – in the future, to how technology affects our basic humanity. The most pressing major effect seems to be increased loneliness among young people. What is fundamentally different about online interactions? Entropy guides Jabrils’ thoughts, with the good and the bad bouncing around to create a sense of order. It sounds like we need a healthy balance of both – otherwise it’s too easy to create silos of personality which lure us in like the sirens, and then crash us on the rocks of being an NPC. Jabrils reminds us that all of this is at the core an endeavor stemming from human creations, whether it’s data sets or algorithms. What happens when a self-driving Tesla meets a horse and buggy? If AI and tech depends on what we feed into it, everything from languages to marginal personalities and cultures is probably on their way out. Is that a vote for or against a mosquito eradication? And what about the panda volcels? We jump into a philosophical discussion about what constitutes AI art, and whether providing prompts for software is actually creative. Is DALL-E art? Will we get a DALL-E for music? After talking a bit of sportsball, Jabrils explains that he’ll always be relevant because we need people to understand all this information and apply it on a practical level – and that education is what will prevent a dystopian future. We wrap up with simple, powerful advice: try everything, and don’t be afraid to be wrong. Thanks to everyone who came out for the live show – we had an amazing time doing a very unique episode with Jabrils, a little heavier on the philosophical than we’re used to. Quiet Quitting is Garbage
Thanks to MAINGEAR for speeding up everything for us. Check out the VYBE line that’s making up the core of Matt’s new studio -- and use code CREATE for a free additional year of warranty on desktops: https://maingear.com/ref/656/ Join Our Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/thecreateunknown We’ve got a problem with “Quiet Quitting,” which is the tactic of doing the absolute bare minimum at a job as a form of protest and to preserve both energy and sanity due to feelings of exploitation. Kevin thinks the exact opposite is the way forward – but are there circumstances in which quiet quitting is a good idea? Kevin’s first major realization came from Conan O’Brien: his advice was to engage in Quiet Grinding. Do your job, work hard, be reliable, and someone will notice… just like the chicken wing quiet grinder who ended up facilitating a restaurant’s expansion and managing its new location. Last week we talked to Ben, who got where he is because he engaged in Quiet Grinding. And 25 years ago, Matt hand-polished over 4,000 copper tacks one by one without complaint. Kevin breaks it down to two big questions: Can you be trusted, and are you disciplined enough? It’s true that Quiet Quitting is often tied to a failure of management, but you’ve got to care about you and your own performance. If you can control it, take pride in it. Resentment is not going to help. And let’s be honest: you’ve got time. Almost every single person has double-digit hours of free time each week, and that’s even after factoring in 10 hours of gaming. Chances are, if you make good decisions with your time, you’ve got 20 or 30 hours a week to work on your passion projects. Stop talking, start doing – and all it takes is a 10% boost. Patrons ask about whether it’s possible to do too much Quiet Grinding, and we question the terminology of the grind. We’ve got the rest of the year to come up with a better term, and we’re fairly sure that Stallone or Schwarzenegger have the right answer. We had a great time hanging out with everyone for the live show, and it was an excellent followup to last week’s conversation with Ben. Thanks again to our Patrons, who really do make this show happen each and every week. Onward to Jabrils! You love anime. You love tea. Creating the Unknown with Ben Webster
Post your first job FREE: https://linkedin.com/create Thanks to MAINGEAR for speeding up everything for us. We’ve wanted to do an episode with Ben for a while because his story is pretty interesting – and he’s blended the traditional education route with hands-on work with us. Ben had a tough decision to make when it came to going to school. First off, was it even worth it? And if so, did it make sense to wait until in-person classes returned to normal? He ended up going to one of the best communications schools in the world – and it’s the same one Matt did programs at in HTML and newspaper layout in the 1990s. What started as handling a few terminally online tasks for TCU turned into a full-fledged producer and editor role with us. That behind-the-scenes role is extremely important, since it allows talent to be talent. But how important is it to know how to do a thing yourself before outsourcing it to the Bens of the world? Making stuff is hard, but making stuff reliably is REALLY hard. Ben dealt with a bonkers living situation to hit every deadline for the podcast – and that’s a major reason why we committed to working with him over others in the tremendous network of people we know. Scheduling works both ways, though, and even the people who want to create with spontaneous energy need to have some structure. Ben goes through a full example of a fake horror podcast – ‘The Spooking Hour,’ as Charles Khan decided – from having the idea to executing it to improving it. He outlines a clear, sensible process that’s a mix of what he’s picked up in school and what he’s seen working with us and Real Weird Sickos. It’s an excellent process for any online project. None of us know what Ben will be up to in 5 years, but we do agree with him that interesting people are always trying to get better at something – and it doesn’t even matter what it is. If someone doesn’t have any ambitions at all, turn and run. We had a great time during the live episode (aside from Matt’s technical glitches in the new setup), and thanks to both the Patrons who make this show happen each and every week and to Maingear for kicking off what’s soon to be an epic recording studio. Chris Ray Gun's Boiling Ocean of Hot Takes
Join Our Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/thecreateunknown Chris Ray Gun’s content has evolved, but he’s closer to being himself than ever – and he’s putting in more time podcasting, streaming, and making videos than even seems possible. Now that he’s living alone, who’s going to hold the camera? Separating where you work and where you live is complex. Is it best to have a totally different room and setup? Or can you make it work, and actually be happier, when everything you do all day is seamlessly tied together? It depends. It turns out that Denny’s is a lot more dangerous than any of us realize, and even an assault there is preferable to an office job. Chemo in Applebee’s seems worse, but it might not compare to what a retail job does to the mind, body, and soul – and to any music you used to enjoy. After this episode, we might need to get the Nirvana Baby as a guest. It’ll be weird to have seen a guest’s wiener before. Hasbullah would be even better. Chris has a complicated relationship with Japan and some of his fellow anime enjoyers. Then again, people are bizarre in general, and Chris’s recent bar encounter proves it. He’d rather be in space than fly over an ocean – and it might be worth boiling the whole thing just to be safe. Kevin brings up Chris’s proclivity toward hot takes and his apparent comfort with delivering them. How does he do it? He just puts down the phone. With so many terrible things to rip on now – Lion King, Cowboy Bebop, and all sorts of remakes – there’s a lot of heat to sling. Patrons ask questions about how Chris might get to Japan, his differing pizza policies, his animal fantasy turducken, and some outstanding advice about confidence. This show was wild – it was a real treat for all the people who showed up for the live recording. Thanks again to the Patrons who make this show possible each and every week. You really are the best. That Joke Isn’t Funny Anymore, but Lou Perez Is
Join Our Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/thecreateunknown Comedian Lou Perez is launching his book “That Joke Isn’t Funny Anymore” with us, and having Lou on is something we’ve looked forward to for a long time – after all, we’ve known him for about 7 years now. He’s a product of New York City, specifically Queens, and that’s what made being forced to sit outside at one of his favorite pizzerias a truly harrowing experience. It was pizza so good he’d ‘schlep through streets of shit’ to get it… which seems increasingly more likely in NYC. He’s out of the city now, but he’s still tracking the old neighborhood via NextDoor. New York is changing. Is it still the greatest city in the world? Ehhhhhh. Kevin loves that 70’s/80’s genre of urban vigilante films like Death Wish, but the Alpha Cuck is here to save the city. Lou’s got a theory that one of the worst things Donald Trump ever did was to convince the beta males that they’re alphas, and a surprising number of them rip on others with confidence despite nothing of their own to be confident about. Why?!? But the phenomenon of political understanding is even weirder. Liberals get Lou’s jokes and get mad, while Conservatives miss his jokes and still get mad. What’s the difference? Kevin drops one of his favorite tweets of all time, a response to an MMA fighter that perfectly and candidly elucidates the reality of online social interactions. None of us really understand what’s going on with people now, though, including the bizarre urge to film bad events instead of helping. What are you gonna do, stab me? YES. We hit the disconnect between real life and violence again as Lou pushes the boundaries of his 4.8% Native American heritage. Then we get serious as Lou dissects the right between the Hanna Gadsby’ers and the Dave Chappelle’rs, and the 17 people in the world who enjoy both. According to Lou – and us – comedy shows really shouldn’t be political rallies. That’s the message here and in Lou’s book: grind. Take chances. Run the risk of hurting (including, and perhaps especially, yourself). Just ask Richard Pryor, who makes a guest appearance to close out the episode. Thanks to everyone who came out for a live show that waffled between comfortable and raucous – it was awesome. And a special thanks to the Patrons who make this show happen each and every week. Schlatt's Creator Advice Is Give Up
Join Our Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/thecreateunknown There’s only one way to start a conversation with Jschlatt, and that’s a detailed examination of the social interactions that undergirds deli meat transactions. Getting the perfect slice of meat is a delicate balance of conversation and mouth feel, right down to the millimeter. We get serious as Kevin pulls a remarkable recent statistic about 98% of kids wanting to become social influencers. Schlatt’s advice? Quit – and he’s got compelling reasons for it. Matt hits a breakthrough processing an old quote about loving what you do and never working a day in your life, because it’s completely backwards. Schlatt confesses his love for cars – really nice cars, too – and Kevin posits that TikTokers aren’t even going to be able to afford an Uber ride. He’s probably right given the way the platform sources free content, and it’s just not enough to make a sustainable career. Schlatt delves into excellent advice about developing content skills with streaming and only then cutting down into shorter-form. It’s a funnel that narrows rather than a pipeline that gets wider. If you can talk and you can think/write, you can be funny over 3 hours or 3 sentences. It took Schlatt a long time to get good at streaming – and now he’s molded that into Sleep Deprived, which is part passion project, and Chuckle Sandwich. His method works. Nuts. Hard candies. Snorting Boom Boom. And, of course, candles – lots and lots of scented candles. This is living. Schlatt has an idea for a customer service proxy business and he professes his admiration for Scott the Woz before we launch into a series of Patron questions about Texas pizza, Schlatt’s early experiences with the Lone Star State, shooting flamethrowers and a treatise on developing mouth-feel skills. Kevin laughed so hard through this episode that he was sore and sweating. It was THAT good, and everyone who came out for the live show knows it. Thanks to Schlatt for dropping in again, and a special thanks to the Patrons who make this show happen each and every week. You really are the best. ManyKudos -- Not Safe For Work
Post your first job FREE: https://linkedin.com/create Join Our Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/thecreateunknown We're back on Tuesday with jschlatt, and his return into the Unknown will likely be peppered with cereal residue and conflict. We're prepared. We're ready to fight. Tuesday, 6pm ET. On to the Kudos... It’s Kudos time, which also means it’s jelqing time. And toilet time. Sometimes you do something and wonder how your life went so wrong – or so right. This is one of those episodes. There really is a difference between toilets around the world, and ManyKudos was quite pleased with the toilet bowl water placement in his first trip to the US. Matt shares his story of the worst Ukranian toilet and the rope on a skateboard that held the toilet paper, and he’s got pictures to prove it. Kevin’s turn into the serious starts with the deadly animals of Australia and the phenomenon of island gigantism, but Kudos thinks the dangerous animals in the US are actually more of a threat. Somehow, and we don’t know how, this turns into a discussion of jelqing, which Kudos and friends used to shame the YouTube search history of a fellow Beef Boy. After Kudos tries to ruin Matt’s career for the 17th time in an hour, we start to talk Beef. Kudos, Duplex, and the Millers have put together a podcast that’s run 60 or 70 episodes now, and the crazy thing is that they’ve violated Rule #1 of making a successful project: Simplicity. Their studio and editing setup is complex, but it’s working nicely – almost as well as the Peanut Butter Solution. Kudos finishes us off with 10 minutes of serious wisdom, and his continuous rise from new channel to full-time YouTuber is one of the coolest things we’ve seen in the history of this podcast. It’s worth listening to his advice about how to become interesting. Thanks to everyone who came out for the live show, and a special thanks to the Patrons who make this podcast possible each and every week. You really are the best. We Respond to Our Zoomer Critics
A broad range of people listen to The Create Unknown, from high schoolers to retirees. Occasionally that leads to some misinterpretations, and we’ve run head first into a few of those recently. It’s time to throw down. We clear up what we meant by our shared worldview that we talked to PsychicPebbles about – namely, that things are getting much, much better, and that life is just a lot easier than it used to be. Does that mean we’re out of touch with current problems, or that we don’t think they’re all that serious? The truth is that they’re different, and we try to qualify that whenever we can. And sometimes we even over explain it. The problem seems to arise when information runs counter to existing beliefs. Do we miss nuance, or does someone just hear what they want to hear? What we do know is that Vietnam spared us both and neither of us have ever truly had to worry about getting drafted. We discuss the truth about intergenerational wealth and security as we tap into the point of it all: doing what you can to help yourself and then doing what you can to help others. Some of the answers here have been around for thousands of years – and that’s why literally everyone needs to read the Book of Job. After addressing a specific comment about exposure to shocking amounts of blood, Patrons ask questions about what got us into the creative realm, Matt’s bizarrely ghost-like presence at Light Wave, whether there will always be generational gaps, and our formative experiences in college. A really solid crowd turned out for this one, and contributions from Episode Chat helped make this discussion roll (including a special nod to Jen for her frequent wisdom). All of you make this show happen each and every week – we owe everything to our Patrons and community members, and we’ll see you when you GET INNNN next week with ManyKudos. You love anime. Rusty Cage’s Backyard “Lemonade Stand”
Rusty Cage is a comic book artist, musician, YouTuber, and now… controversial carpenter. We discuss his ongoing series documenting the building of a backyard “lemonade stand” that would make Marie Antoinette shiver. Kevin throws out several concepts he’s been mulling over in recent weeks including the Mr. Beastification of YouTube, the death of the full-time creator at the hands of TikTok, and the advancement of nuclear-level clickbait swallowing all the views. But ultimately, both Kevin and Rusty agree on the need to touch grass. Really touch it. And to stop being cows trapped in the barn all winter. You love anime. You love tea. Nerdwriter Escapes into Meaning
The gold standard of the video essay genre on YouTube is Nerdwriter, and between a decade of videos and a book about to drop, Evan’s got a lot to talk about. We start off with a bit of failure: the novel that got Evan on YouTube in the first place, and we analyze why it just wasn’t very good. It *was* successful in the sense that it kicked off an amazing career of writing for video and now a collection of essays – and he successfully avoided the worst thing in the creative process, which is starting a thing and then giving up. Evan’s experienced a nagging voice with his creative work. Matt has a lot more confidence in his writing, and that’s its own serious problem. After film school, Evan wanted to go in a different direction. His point about developing creative taste is important – you know what you like and you know what you want to make, but the only way to close the gap between your vision and your skill is to churn out a massive body of work. There’s really no way around it. After a few deadline foibles, Evan figured out how to complete his book of essays. The Kenmore Square bookstore delivered Ralph Waldo Emerson to him, and Emerson has served as a guide and inspiration through more than a decade of work. Kevin’s Emerson is actually in comedy – he just relates more to the funnier side. But whether it’s comedy or the Western Canon, engagement comes from making the material tactile. We discuss the sheer volume of data and evidence blocking the modern historian’s path before pushing and pulling on the relationship between video and scripts. Patrons jump in to ask about Evan’s favorite art movement, the initial breadth of his video essay plan, and the key to being an interesting person. Thanks to Evan for spending so much time with us, and we’ve already pre-ordered his forthcoming book, “Escape into Meaning.” As much as it hurts Matt to be the second most interesting alumnus from Boston University on the podcast, we can’t wait for Evan to come back and talk about the 10,000 different topics we didn’t have time to get to. Everyone who came out to the live show got a good one. A special thanks goes out to the Patrons who make this show happen each and every week – you really are the best. Next week: Rusty Cage! PsychicPebbles Opens His Brain For Us
Thanks to MAINGEAR for speeding up everything for us. Check out the VYBE line that’s making up the core of Matt’s new studio: https://maingear.com/vybe/ Post your first job FREE: https://linkedin.com/create We start off our 2+ hour biannual neurological exam of PsychicPebbles’ lizard brain with a grim comparison of the Smiling Friends and Vsauce fandoms – and a realization about the rewatchability of both endeavors. Jimmy Carter is set to trade in the peanut farm and Habitat for Humanity for a brief cameo on the show, but he might be in line behind Putin and Kim Jong Un. Kevin wants Shaq to listen to the podcast, and we unite in our hatred of Big Cheese. Smiling Friends has received a shocking level of support online. Its community is huge and active to the point where the tattoos are starting to roll in. A Brian Peppers/Smiling Friends mashup tattoo would be pretty sweet, and probably even better than the RIP Brian Family Guy tattoos from the past. It’s just a different era now – YouTube used to be loaded with all sorts of crazy and edgy stuff, which eventually moved on to LiveLeak and BitChute and who knows where else. We start to get deep by probing the value of seeing really awful things online. Does being exposed to tragedy, whether it’s visual or experienced, actually help? Rick Beato had a good take on this, and Kevin’s got 5 sons with the same name. Matt wonders about the future of Choose Your Own Adventure style AI content, and Zach’s living it to some degree right now. What we do know for sure is that the sheer amount of information available to creators, which only seems to be increasing, is going to matter. Matt’s got a mystery pipe going back over 50 years, and Zach’s fairly sure it’s the only flow of air directly into the mouth of an underground captive. But the philosophical elements of all this carry weight when it comes to creativity and community – because if you’re bragging about being the biggest guy in the Transformers sphere, you’re severely broken. Zach and Matt bond over Milton Friedman, who’s apparently sitting next to Karl Marx in the Pebbles Library. Matt draws value from William F. Buckley’s Firing Line, and it all adds up to a fascination with people, places, and past that the three of us share – and which we use to navigate the present. It shows up in Smiling Friends, Vsauce2, and literally everything we do. The Great Ptomaine Panic of 2022 has begun. We’re scared, but Pim is TERRIFIED. Matt quotes the Bible during a full-on Ptomaine Party, and there’s no guarantee of survival – so before we expire, we rush to a lightning round of questions that cover memes in art, Smiling Friends deadlines, Cream the Slug, Pebbles’ worldview, and how to break into entertainment. There’s really no one better to learn from regarding creative endeavors and how to work with other people successfully than Zach. That’s why we keep talking to him – every episode mines more and more solid gold, and we haven’t even begun to scratch the surface. You love anime. You love tea. Drew Durnil: Geography Jester and Empire Builder
Thanks to MAINGEAR for speeding up *everything* for us. Check out the VYBE line that’s making up the core of Matt’s new studio: https://maingear.com/vybe/ Post your first job FREE: https://linkedin.com/create Drew Durnil is one of the most prolific creators we know, and he’s dropped over 500 videos since we talked to him a year and a half ago. All that may have culminated in a theory that the next great world event will center on a tiny city-state with a 12-person army. Or maybe not. It’s extremely difficult to slap a label on Drew’s content, because it’s not just geography anymore – his content runs the full gamut of history, current events, and just plain interesting elements of the world. The running theme is the exceedingly rare ‘Jester’s privilege’ he enjoys, which a whole lot of people try to pull off… and fail. But the hidden beauty is in Drew’s efficiency, which extends through editing into sticking to what he does best. All that output can come with a tremendous cost, though, and Drew’s old enough now to be cognizant of how to avoid the pitfalls of becoming too wrapped up in his channel. For better and worse, Drew admits that his 20s sort of flashed by, and now he’s looking to take advantage of his time and resources. Germany, Italy, Japan? His travel wishlist is a little bit suspicious on the surface – but he’d like to be a new version of Dennis Rodman uniting the Axis of Durnil. Kevin points out how absolutely incredible it is to be in a foreign country where you don’t speak the language and everyone pretty much leaves you alone. Drew experienced that in Sweden, Matt did it in Israel, and Kevin did it in Kyoto… all of which are much, much better than Los Angeles. Drew details his post-apocalyptic nuclear wasteland of a Discord and we reminisce about how hundreds of his devotees jumped into the TCU server, which surprisingly wasn’t a problem at all. Some are still around, and they’re awesome. His audience is rabid in the best and worse ways, and it’s actually a phenomenon that probably couldn’t have existed 5 years ago. Is a fart jar different than a pizza? It depends. But we hatch a plan for Drew’s future endeavors – creating a harem of Geographe-girls to do… well, we actually didn’t figure that part out yet. After a bit of MMA chat, we hit questions about cursed countryhuman drawings, whether Drew would play it straight and become a traditional teacher, and advice to help 16-year old Drew (and everyone listening) develop into an interesting person who’s recession-proof and content evolution-proof. We had as much fun recording with Drew as we did hanging out with him at VidCon, and we were thrilled to be able to share that experience with everyone who showed up to the live show. Thanks to the Patrons who make this show possible each and every week – you really are the best. And thanks to MAINGEAR for powering all our PC endeavors. Charity Croff’s Infinite Pursuit of Knowledge
We met Charity Croff in a really, really strange way – and before we were even out of the car, we’d invited him on The Create Unknown. He represents the new generation of educational/informational creators, and he got started by crushing a million views about a week after one of his first videos. He had to jump a few hurdles to get where he is. School wasn’t a fit and people around him didn’t quite understand how online content creation worked. But without defining himself in the face of those challenges, would he be where he is today? Probably not. Charity’s YouTube channel touches on all sorts of big questions – politics, religion, race and society – but his main focus right now seems to be shorter-form content on TikTok. The early days of Facebook were absolutely amazing, and we all wish we’d taken advantage of that gravy train of views back when it was easy. But Charity is almost immune to the changing platforms: his strength is synthesis, and that survives every development and evolution in platforms. Oh, and he’s a fantastic musician – music production was his early focus and he recorded the podcast right in the studio before working on some tracks. Why are all these young YouTubers so talented with music and the arts, too?! Charity is one of the most fascinating people we’ve talked to, and we’ll definitely have him back on the show to follow up on literally everything we talked about. This is what happens when you get stuffed in a black Suburban with strangers. Thanks to everyone who came out for a seriously entertaining live show, and a special thanks to the Patrons who make this show happen each and every week. And don’t forget, next Tuesday, July 19th at 6pm ET, we’ll be talking to PsychicPebbles for his TCU-record 4th appearance on the show. Get ready to smile, friends. You love anime. You love tea. No VidCon for Old Men
We’re alive. BARELY. Did we go to VidCon, an event that Kevin has been featured at for a decade? Or… did we go to TikTokCon for the very first time? The answer to both questions appears to be YES. The highlight of the trip was hanging out with the TCU community, from an incredible dinner (and 40oz. steak) with Minty, Michael, and Andy, to a breakfast with Doejens and both past and future TCU guests. The lowlight? WE ALL GOT COVID, and we’re arbitrarily deciding that ManyKudos was the Patient Zero. YouTube was just… barely present at VidCon. It’s all TikTok now, for better and worse. We recognized virtually no one at the hotel or at the event – and the event itself was sparsely attended with an anemic main floor. Even the 2nd floor, which is always a buzzing hub of all the YouTubers you know, was nearly empty. Tumbleweeds. What’s it mean? For one, Kevin’s got a theory about whether TikTokers actually have real fans. Is it possible to develop a community when your viewers are just Tinder-swiping through content? Even if they know you, is there an attachment to your content? Parasocial communities are bad, but having no connection might even be worse. Kevin had a great panel with William Osman, Allen Pan, Michael Reeves, and more, but that turned out to be an accident. Matt had a grueling travel schedule from LA to Austin, where he spent 8 hours on stage moderating panels at Glink’s LightWave. And from the Covid to the hangouts, it all raises questions about what we do next year. And the answer right now? We don’t know. Maybe the future is Creator Clash. Maybe it’s Light Wave. Who knows? It was incredible meeting people from the TCU community, including everyone mentioned above and Cheesy. It really, truly was the best part of the whole trip. Thanks to everyone who came out for the live show here, and a special thanks to the Patrons who make this show happen each and every week (aside from when we’re nearly dead). We’ve got a TON of guests scheduled for the rest of the summer, including something of a TCU favorite coming in 2 weeks… You love anime. You love tea. Our Serious Advice for Creatives
There’s no sense in talking about creativity week after week without discussing the things that get in the way… because there are a lot of them. They can ruin days, months, years, and even a lifetime of great ideas. So how does a creative navigate that mix of life and workflow in such a way that they execute their vision and maybe even make a full-time, decades-long career out of it? Kevin’s got a water pitcher metaphor courtesy of Rosanna Pansino that turns out to be absolutely amazing at describing the situation we’re all in. You’ve got a finite amount of water, and different forces come for it. Little sips from emails and phone calls, big spills from people bumping into your table… it all matters. But Matt points out that if you’re succeeding 100% of the time, you just aren’t pushing it far enough. Every day is a game of green light, yellow light, and red light, and it’s a useful analogy to manage yourself during difficult times. It’s also good to develop a habit of self-reflection and personal honesty, because you’re in trouble without a strong commitment to both. One thing that’s helped Kevin tremendously? Turning off notifications on his phone – and there’s a complex communications concept that supports everything he says. Consider how you schedule. Get to know yourself. Think about how you’ve changed over the months and years (and for us, decades). This is the type of stuff that will determine whether you succeed or fail. This is probably our most serious episode ever. It’s fun for us to talk to all sorts of people about their processes and their wild rides to success – some slow and long, others short and fast – but the real truth is that everyone with a sustainable creative career has figured out how to deal with the issues we bring up. We’ll be at VidCon next to see as many people as we can. If you’re gonna be there, PLEASE let us know so we can HANG OUT. Thanks to everyone who came out for this one and submitted excellent questions – and a special thanks to our Patrons who make this show happen each and every week. See you at VidCon! You love anime. Evil Uno: AEW’S Masked Gamer
Evil Uno has spent nearly two decades grinding upward in a physically and mentally grueling career that combines athleticism and performance – and even though he’s with All Elite Wrestling, he’s made time for gaming. Evil Uno is one of the new, rare breed that’s managed to combine his creative interests and crossover in a way that makes millions of people happy, and we want to know how that actually works. Apparently, it starts with a 6-pack of Super Nintendos. Uno’s got a travel schedule that moves him around every week, which means his streaming setup has to be portable and easy enough to set up and take down. Sometimes that means employing a garbage can. But what does housecleaning think when they walk in a hotel room and see leather masks and cameras pointed at the bed?! And the mask has led to some interesting exchanges with the public. But the real story here is about Uno’s commitment to developing a career out of nothing. From small independent shows in Ontario to driving thousands of miles to and through the United States to make ends meet. It’s an uncommon path, but it’s paid off. Did he see AEW coming? Did anyone? It’s only three years old, and it’s given non-traditional personalities like Uno a shot at being broadcast to millions every week. It’s a lot better than web design – although the physical demands are unlike what any of our guests have ever had to endure. Most of the other wrestlers on AEW have had a similar journey and dealt with the same struggles. Creatives need difficulty. Kevin’s advice to kids who want to be YouTubers? Go mow lawns. Matt and Uno trade embarrassing intestinal stories, and we get into fans having Evil Uno tattoos – and at this point, there are a ton of them. It does check off one thing from Uno’s bucket list, which includes being on television and having an action figure of himself. And… we need detail on the cleaning regimen for leather masks, so we get it. Kevin relays his winding path through wrestling fandom, from the height of the attitude era to just not caring about wrestling – until AEW reignited his interest. No one saw the resurgence coming, but Evil Uno exemplifies the evolution perfectly. We’ve never had a guest like Uno, and we had an amazing time talking gaming and wrestling – and especially perseverance. Thanks to everyone who showed up to the live show, and a special thanks to the Patrons who make this show happen each and every week. You really are the best. You love anime. You love tea. TierZoo: Ranking the Animal Kingdom
First off, we’d like to wish the infamous Ben W a happy 3-year anniversary with The Create Unknown and Unknown Media. Here’s to 33 more years with a 333% reduction in pay! No one goes deep into the animal kingdom the way TierZoo does. Between analysis and rankings, TierZoo’s entryway into serious zoological thought has familiar roots: a similar concept to Vsauce. Magic: The Gathering and Runescape videos paved the way for something we never really see… instant success. Like, literally his first TierZoo upload blew up. So, what is the peak? Is there even a peak? Would it be possible to realize it? TikTok, Shorts, traditional YouTube… there’s a lot of content at this point, but fusing genres pays off. Monthly uploads may actually be a direct result of… ZooCards decades ago? But TierZoo is finding that topics aren’t as easy to come by as he fills in knowledge-gaps about each animal group. And if he *can* show us bacteria wars on a microscopic level, he should. Subjectivity is always a challenge in the TierZoo ecosystem, but it’s not insurmountable. And he’s parlayed his channel into a spot on Nebula, where he’s found both freedom and an excellent community. After a cruel attack on the dignity of cats (which is 100% accurate) Kevin asks Patron questions about TierZoo’s favorite parasite, his past in the food manufacturing industry, worms, and dinosaurs. Thanks to everyone who came out for the live show, and a special thanks to the Patrons who make this show happen each and every week. You really are the best. And don’t forget – next week is MONDAY with AEW’s Evil Uno! You love anime. You love tea. BlameSocietyFilms: Chad Vader, Board Games and Beer
The comedy duo of Aaron Yonda and Matt Sloan has seen it all, from going viral before YouTube to playing board games with an online community of friends. Kevin’s known them for years starting with a meetup in New York City, but it probably wasn’t as epic as them getting beers with Dan Harman. Back then, anything was fair game including rolfing… but they might regret not vomiting in each other’s mouths. After massive success with Chad Vader, Aaron and Matt evolved into Beer and Board Games. They’ve been going for a while, but they explain that there’s no chance of them running out of games. OH – and we finally get an answer about the dream project, and it’s Space Bear. We just don’t know a lot of details about the bear. Julian. JULIAN. JUUULIANNN. JULIANNNN. JULIAN. JUUUULLLLIIAAAANNNNN. The boys get plenty of board game sponsorships, but mostly roll with donations on the beer side. But it’s not really about the logistics – Matt points out that Aaron and Matt have cracked the hardest online nut, which is just plain making people wish they were hanging out with you. From passion projects like crashing Hot Wheels cars to amassing and abandoning collections, there’s a lot of lovable weirdness in the world. We get a proper Welcome to the Basement (which you should never, ever play for your dogs) before wrapping up a chill, lo-fi episode with a pair of comedy legends. Everyone who came out for the live show had a ball, so don’t miss next Tuesday at 6pm ET with TierZoo. And a special thanks to all the Patrons who make this show happen each and every week. Top Gun and Neil DeGrasse Moon Hate
The quintessential 80’s action film Top Gun appears to be a cultural litmus test – everyone seems to think it’s either abysmal or amazing and not much in between. Matt’s on Team Cruise, but Kevin thinks the entire movie is… boring. And underwhelming. And just plain dumb to the point that he wouldn’t recommend it to anyone. Why? Because there’s no real problem in the whole movie. Everything is just too low stakes. Matt thinks the Cold War context and Maverick’s nature are enough. The redemption story just didn’t do it for Kevin. They agree on the supremacy of casting and a great soundtrack, and Matt thinks it’s an exceptional time capsule of sorts. But he’s got a love/hate relationship with Top Gun after it made for the worst date of his entire life. Kevin wants to talk about Neil deGrasse Tyson’s singular Twitter style, which seems to be offending as many people as possible. Is NDT wrong? Not usually, no – but that’s not the point. And Matt just isn’t interested in anyone’s opinion on anything. Conrad asks us about the Creator Clash, which everyone agrees was a tremendous success. The athletic side worked, the entertainment side worked. And as they talk about future Clashes, they hatch a plan so crazy that it just might work. Rick Beato: Video Games Killed The Radio Star
Post your first job FREE: https://linkedin.com/create Rick Beato is ‘Everything Music’ and more. He’s played, taught, and produced music for over four decades, and his unique expertise in analyzing songs and the people who play them has resulted in an extremely popular YouTube channel. But how do you get to the point where you casually and appropriately mention someone like Steve Vai? Rick explains his massive acquisition of stems from 20 years ago, and it turned out to be a fortuitous trade. He also gets songs from the actual source, because why not just ask? A little secret creeps out about the best way to prepare for interviews and videos… and it’s simply spending a lifetime thinking about it already. When Rick talks to a musician, he’s already been thinking about the conversation for years – and maybe even decades. One of his early musical passions was grunge, and now that he’s had over 30 years to ruminate on its songs and its artists, he recognizes it as a unique combination of experiences and people. Kevin thinks this means the notion of the ‘rock star’ is unlikely to happen again, and he’s probably right. Something weird is happening with the kids, though. They just aren’t listening to music. Rick says they’re playing video games, but they’re not sitting down and dedicating time to just listening to songs. It’s a tremendous societal shift that no one else is talking about, and there are serious implications for music and the other creative arts. Combine that with an algorithm-driven, carefully-curated experience and both listening patterns and discovery are completely different than in the past – and not in a good way. There really is something about life experience, and especially a bit of hardship, driving good art, whether it’s songs or movies. It’s not the suffering of a tortured artist, it’s just… life, and that’s changing. You also can’t fake it. It helps to grow up in an area that’s never sunny, but the three of us are biased. Rick answers questions about advice to a 20-something artist – and it’s AMAZING advice – along with whether perfect pitch is a blessing or curse, new music from Jack White and Steve Vai, the past and present of prog rock, and what’s next for music as a whole. Thanks to the many people who came out for the live recording, and a special thanks to the Patrons who make this show happen each and every week. You really are the best. And thanks, of course, to Rick, who brought a lifetime of expertise to a 90-minute show and absolutely blew us away with one of our best episodes ever. You love anime. You love tea. Sniping Soup is Stupid on Purpose
Sniping Soup is pretty much living the dream: video games, a metal band, and hanging out with his friends every day. It’s been a decade since he first uploaded on YouTube, and now he’s got an audience for both streaming and music. And while he’s not much of a fighter, he does like to mosh – even if he has to witness near-deaths from balcony jumps. He does like some tame music, and when you watch a video of Soup ripping on kids in Rust, it’s hard to imagine him listening to Movements. The real question is about streams, though. A 15-minute video might be the result of 6 or 7 hours of streaming, depending on the game. The best part? Just talking to other people. Soup could even weaponize the reputationally-troubled Club Penguin. Roleplaying servers are easy fodder for Soup and his gang – but how does he explain what he does to his grandmother? After a bit of beer discussion, we decide to declare war on Cocomelon. But the war on comedy movies may already be over. For Soup, comedic content begins with the thumbnail. If he can get someone to laugh there, the rest is easy. Uber shenanigans, metal bands, where Soup draws the line at offensive content (he doesn’t), and more – it’s a wild ride with one of the funniest people we’ve ever talked to on TCU. Sean Malone on Why People Suck at Economics
There’s no one better at explaining economics in an interesting, non-obnoxious way than Sean Malone and his Out of Frame channel. It’s such an important subject, but very few people are truly interested – and only a portion of those want to learn as opposed to just spreading their own beliefs. In terms of creating compelling YouTube videos, it’s a challenge. And occasionally it goes wrong – like with Sean’s Arcane video. It turns out those commenters were more interested in critiquing what he didn’t talk about, and that’s a common problem with video essays. Why does it feel like we’re slowly turning off a faucet of decency in online discourse? Kevin’s spent some time re-thinking the conclusion of his video about robots and automation, and even though pretty much everything is getting better all the time, it’s something we generally don’t appreciate. Why?! And if it’s all improving, how come Netflix seems to have stagnated? Sean’s got thoughts about the state of the video essay, and he thinks it’s just a bit less popular now than in the past. Maybe that’s due to the rise of Shorts, TikToks, and quick, less-nuanced content. And maybe we’re all just getting tired of thinking. We could talk about movies and comics all day with Sean – he’s shockingly knowledgeable. But Kevin wanted to seize on the grand debate over who Superman should be. Is he a strong, moral character like in the Donner films? Or is it important that he’s darker and feels some of the more insidious emotions? It’s worth noting that Superman is committed to doing good in the world when it just doesn’t benefit him very often. Patrons jump in to ask about the art of persuasion with difficult topics, YouTube’s old mantra of “Broadcast Yourself,” the unique appeal of HGTV, whether streaming is becoming cable, and whether Sean would re-make any of his old videos. This discussion ranged from building houses to why TV sucks, and it’s a fascinating look at a mind that has spent years refining the process of generating compelling content – and we’re already planning topics for the next time we talk to Sean. Thanks to everyone who came out for the live show on Discord, and a special thanks to the Patrons who make this show happen each and every week – including Venture Addicts. Welcome to the orphanage! Safemoon and the Evolution of CoffeeZilla
Post your first job FREE: https://linkedin.com/create The man who used to make excellent educational videos you could watch as you drank a cup of coffee in the morning has evolved into a stone-cold assassin of all things fraudulent – and Coffeezilla’s massive investigative video on Safemoon might be his most important work yet. It didn’t take him much time to realize that Safemoon’s model just… didn’t make sense. But after 11 months of interviews and research, he’s put out a banger that lays bare the personalities and problems around that particular crypto coin. And it’s an extremely difficult business to analyze since regulators are literally years behind. What’s legal? What’s breaking the law? What *is* the law? Influencers have hopped on to several crypto projects, and they don’t seem to care much about the potential rug pulls. It *seems* obvious that this is dangerous territory for people considering buying into these coins, but Coffee explains that people are in a rough spot. They need solutions, they need options, and crypto gives them hope. There’ll be more on Safemoon in coming days – so we wanted to dive deep into Coffee’s incredible transition from Break to Zilla. It happened by accident, but when he went full force, the result was a unique digital studio and an efficient model that made his old channel largely obsolete. He’s customized every element of the Zilla to make his audience and himself happy, and it’s working. Patrons, many of whom have been waiting months for Coffee’s return, ask about how he’s so good at drawing new info out of people like Mr. Beast, the future of digital sets, and the influence of crypto. We were thrilled to see CoffeeZilla hit 1 million subs the other day, and now he’s got a video on the trending tab – it was just an incredible time to hang out with everyone in the Discord and one of the most creative people we’ve ever encountered in YouTube. Barely Sociable on Dangerous Mysteries, Taboo
It feels like everyone on YouTube is telling long-form stories now. But in the last 2 years, one channel has exploded by mixing intriguing investigations, a commitment to the truth, and a voice like hot butter. Barely Sociable’s latest target is the music industry, and after spending a little time asking him about it, the industry’s perverse incentives lay bare a recipe for crazy. Barely goes over details from the CIA handbook for assassinations (!) as he goes into how musicians can subject to a host of threats, from organized crime to moneygrubbing executives. And the results can be as wild as the bizarre bathtub demise of Whitney Houston and her daughter. Kevin needs to know: was Jimi Hendrix murdered? The answer is compelling. Barely has become a staple of investigative YouTube while still managing to keep most of his anonymity. Sometimes it’s a blessing, but sometimes it limits opportunities. And that’s alright – we’re all more attached to his editing and research than we are to his face. But what he does need is a mascot, and there’s no better fit than the milk-sweating platypus. The origin story of all things Sociable is as mysterious as one of his videos, but it’s clear that a fair amount of prior work and expertise led to the creation of the channel. He can make content about anything – so what won’t he do? It’s dangerous out there. Patrons ask some really excellent questions about the innerworkings of Barely’s mind, conspiracies, and why people even bother to invent things when reality itself is so bizarre. Thanks to everyone who came out for the live recording – there were a lot of you and we had a ball poking and prodding Barely’s neurons with you. And those who stuck around for the aftershow hangout are the salt of the earth. Our Patrons are the best, you really do make this show happen each and every week. You love anime. You love tea. Jared Bauer: Wisecrack to Wisdom
You love anime. You love tea. Get 10% off your order with code CREATE at The Dragon's Treasure: https://www.thedragonstreasure.com/ Buy our T-shirts: https://www.thecreateunknown.com/store/ Jared Bauer is one of the few people on YouTube who has built something massive and then moved on, and his journey from Wisecrack to his own total reinvention sounds like it’s just getting started. It doesn’t take long for us to realize that Jared is on another level when it comes to understanding the business of online media and how the dollars actually flow. Is the age of brand-sponsored content nearing an end?! Jared thinks that influencer marketing’s house of cards is ready to collapse, and he’s happy to have moved out. But it’s not all grim: what failed in the past might actually be what succeeds in the future. What he does know is that the grind of Wisecrack wore him down, and as he explains the channel’s freakish pace of content generation it’s easy to understand why. Long-term burnout can happen, like with Freddie Wong, or it can be short-term discomfort – like Kevin’s struggle with performing a script while screaming through racetrack corners. It all adds up. Is it possible to sustain years of hard work without running the risk of burnout? Maybe, if you’re shamelessly authentic. It’s a struggle with parasocial relationships, though.. Or is it? Jared talks about everything from what the Harlem Shake *really* meant to how it’s even possible to offer a unique perspective through the video essay. In a sea of angry video game guys, Johnny just wanted to talk about the games he loved – obscure titles like Ys and Phantasy Star. 14 years later, he’s still sharing his passion for gaming, anime, and D&D with no plans on retiring. Kevin and Johnny get into growing up in the “quieter” 1990s, and swap Final Fantasy 7 pre-order bonus T-shirt stories. They also fanboy out on late 80s hand-drawn anime, and the soundtrack to Project A-Ko. Johnny calls out Kevin for treating him as his personal gamer therapist and Kevin details his pendulum swing between enjoying objectively terrible and great games. We round out the discussion with some questions from Patrons and a tease about what’s coming next on the HappyConsoleGamer channel. Hint: gaming excitement. Thanks to everyone who showed up to lurk and/or participate in the live event, and a special thanks to our Patrons. You really do make this show happen each and every week. The Crossroads of Eggy
You love anime. You love tea. Get 10% off your order with code CREATE at The Dragon's Treasure: https://www.thedragonstreasure.com/ Buy our T-shirts: https://www.thecreateunknown.com/store/ The online journey of Eggy is nearly unrivaled, with arcs that include societal commentary, spitting bars, appearing in documentaries and being a person of interest to the FBI. After one of the longest, strangest trips any online persona has taken, Eggy is at a crossroads – and we’re here to figure out what his next move is (after the Final Fantasy and Dr. Pepper). The problem here is the constant process of spending days upon days building something just to have it ripped away, and Eggy’s not sure how many more times he can do that. It’s not even clear why he was banned, but the prospect of working through a site like Patreon doesn’t seem to appeal. After 5 years of full-time YouTube, maybe it’s even time for a real job. We’re in a technologically-dependent world, and Eggy gives a little human connection to those who need it most. The donations were nice, but the audience desperately tried to pay him to break sobriety – and that’s the sort of thing that makes the allure of YouTube life fade. The solution? Self-betterment, because YouTube or not, the shell, white, and yolk are all going to be there. LSMS Fitness is Eggy’s new venture, and everyone is on board with his fitness journey except his gym’s janitor. Darksydephil, King Cobra, there are a lot of people to keep Eggy busy in the meantime… but is the next Eggy arc a cooking show? Nutrition is actually Eggy’s real background interest, and he’s developed his skills over the last decade. Whatever’s next, we’re here for it. Thanks to Eggy for coming back and spending a couple hours with us, and thanks to everyone who joined in on the live show. And a special thanks to the Patrons who make this show happen each and every week. You really are the best. Next week we’ll be live in the Discord with HappyConsoleGamer, followed by Jared Bauer (formerly of Wisecrack), BarelySociable, Coffeezilla, and Out of Frame’s Sean Malone. If you miss ANY of those live recordings, your mom won’t love you anymore. Why would you even want to risk that?
