#104 Adam from Amp Construction is on the show and we are talking about ICF
EAdam discusses his path from HVAC to ICF and how his very first experience watching ICF being assembled actually frustrated him, he quickly realized the potential behind this new way of building. Adam truly believes most of the negative attached to ICF has everything to do with how and who is installing, like everything in construction. It is in Adam’s nature to question the status quo and build better, even when an architect questions ICF over the client’s request, the best part is the ICF contributed to a passive rating of .041, nice to see someone is doing the homework and building better. Adam has built a business that respects all aspects of construction and his team and his trades all have one goal in mind, the clients.Thank you so much Adam for joining the show again and sharing your ICF construction stories, insight and more. #103 We have the great Peter Lundy a red seal carpenter and former construction teacher on the show
EPeter AKA Lundy shares his story with us from a teenager to his home being burned down by the meth lab neighbor and now he is dealing with the government and rebuilding his home in British Columbia. What a great talk with Lundy and prepare for a really emotional show.We open the show with a Construction Bone Lundy has to pick with us and free estimates. His career began with a newspaper article about youth apprenticeship, after searching for a school to attend since most schools were closing the shop classes. Lundy got into the program at 18 and was a certified Red Seal Carpenter at 22 and working in the industry. After a few years he decided to go back to school for Teachers College with the hope to teach construction. Teaching to Lundy was also about being a mentor, guiding people through the construction industry is as important as learning the skills. Lundy discusses how important safety is and how the school refused to provide him with the correct safety gear and equipment to teach the students and a visit from the Ministry of Labor determined there were over 20 safety violations and eventually Lundy was wrongfully dismissed by the School Board. #99 Framing!!! It’s about time. We have Jesse from Barbosa Carpentry with us talking rough framing.
EWe get right into with a great History with Manny and a perfect Construction Bone to Pick and this time Carlito gets the talk going and Jesse brings up some really strong arguments. Then we finally get talking FRAMING!Jesse is 24 years old and began his career at 19 and fell into framing after a mason site visit that never happened, a framer called and asked him to come in for an interview and that is how he began. Jesse has a 4-man crew including himself, from as young as 20 to as old as 31 and they are really good at what they do and listen to this amazing show to find out why and what happened. Jesse wasn’t the best student in high school but once he began working in the shop class he was able to connect the math to construction and he was able to excel.Jesse discusses expectations from trades that take on work and reading the drawings, dealing with engineers that refuse to be on site to discuss questionable details and even going as far as having an engineer tell Jesse that he seems smart enough and will figure it out. We dive into hand cut roofs and how Jesse has built an efficient framing business. Jesse has no issue picking through the lumber for selects and has even gone as far as to return full lifts of lumber back because he takes pride in his work.We ask the magic question, who taught Jesse? There is a great story behind that question. Jesse has been fortunate enough to make his own luck and surround himself with the right people. Keep up the awesomeness Jesse and never stop learning, giving back and making the construction industry bigger and better.Thank you so much Jesse for joining the show and sharing your construction stories and you have a massive career ahead of you. #98 Homeowner Hell of a Home - We chat with a client and what he went through with an established custom builder
EWe have a homeowner on the show telling us about his experience with a custom builder that wasn’t a very good contractor. You don’t want to miss this show as we focus on what Mark went through but even better what Mark learned during this whole ordeal that is still going on, he is still paying tuition on that education. We start the show with History with Manny and then our new segment, Construction Bone To Pick with and we go after tradespeople damaging others tools and employees and sub trades making mistakes with material, who is to blame and who ends up paying for it?Mark gets right into his renovation nightmare talking about how the builder he chose were great sales people but bad managers and even worse contractors. It all began with the site awareness and how the builder didn’t take mother nature serious during a second floor addition and not making the site safe. Then the windows are scheduled to arrive on site while the client was away on vacation, client requested they wait for their return and the contractors said no, well every single was incorrect and installed incorrectly and that was the final straw. Mark and his family still went through even more surprises these “contractors” left behind, he called them the gifts. Or how I like to call it, the education a client goes through where they are still paying tuition. You don’t want to miss this show, it will educate our listeners, both contractors and clients.Thank you so much Mark for joining the show and sharing your construction stories. Anyone interested in any kind of Brand identity work, Mark is the man and will work with you on any and all graphic requirements you are looking for. #97 Let’s talk everything to do asphalt and asphalt sealing and more with Leo Ing Asphalt Services
ELeo sings an original rap for us and he doesn’t approve of drinking and fishing for the record. Before we get right into asphalt and trust us, that one word will be expressed a number of times on this show, we get briefly talking about millennials and what they are worth, a constant battle of wage vs worth. Bottom line everyone must always deliver on their worth and the moment any tradesperson decides to slow down, not care, make mistakes, because these are choices they made, and when the GC speaks up and questions to wage vs worth don’t be surprised if you are not asked back on site. Now on with our show about ASPHALT SEALING. Leo has established a well-respected sealing business where he educates clients on why he is better and what he does to be better. Leo is Chinese but recently found out that his family tree has some native Canadian so now he considers himself Chindian. What sets Leo apart? He doesn’t spray driveways; he brushes the product onto the surface passing a 4-foot-wide brush over the same spot 4-5 times working his way down the drive. The actual sealer used is critical, there is a difference between sealers and Leo educates us on latex vs oil sealers and he has amazing insight regarding driveway failures. From crack repairs to actual real talk about when it is time to repave because Leo will not steer any homeowner wrong.Find Leo at www.ingservices.net [email protected] and 416 892-4526 Thank you so much Leo for being on the show.Don’t forget we have Construction History from Manny at the beginning of the show, Building Code Talk with Manny at the midpoint and Green Book Talk with Carlito at the near end and now the brand new and very well received Ten Questions of Construction. This is The Construction Lifewww.theconstructionlife.com

We open with the good old boys and what an opener to out show, one of the best ones yet, thanks Jeff for setting the bar. The Loft Doors story actually began with a fireplace mantle that led to a pergola for a client and that very first trip to a dilapidated barn, take as much of the board you want, the owner said to Jeff. Jeff and his creative team considers his pieces as “functional art”. This podcast was an overload of visually stunning pieces in the showroom and a free for all creative session talking about all kinds of custom home décor items. Listen to this amazing show and learn so much about building a brand, the ups and downs, and diving into a market that Jeff had a huge hand in building. Thank you so much Jeff for joining us and sharing so many great stories behind Loft Doors.Don’t forget we have Construction History from Manny at the beginning of the show, Building Code Talk with Manny at the midpoint and Green Book Talk with Carlito at the near end and lastly we have the ten questions of construction.Thank You so much Jeff for joining the show, all the amazing pieces of art, doors, so many doors and more and lots of insight into the construction, design and clients. #95 Maple Leaf Construction Demolition Waterproofing Underpinning and Termite
EChris comes from the Hospitality sector and Jason was always in construction and they thought let’s partner and take on the construction world. Wasn’t an easy task. It all began with a bin business, that led into more reno work, then it was too much to handle without any proper organization so Chris and Jason sat down during the early Covid days and came up with this Business and Employee Guideline Plan they developed and that is when their business actually became a proper business. We begin chatting about termite issues and how termites love nesting inside spray foam, they will build a colony twice as fast in foam over wood. But we get right back into running the business and learning what is and isn’t working from the way the employees arrive on site to deliverables. One of their key guidelines, set hours, you begin and end at a certain time, that way every employee can have a personal life. What a crazy idea that is.The guidelines talk about personal hygiene, clothing and work uniform – no track pants Carlito, tool care and use, driving habits and company vehicle usage, smoking, language on site, manners and more. This guideline was developed to build a better team and eventually a better brand. This podcast has been a great resource for so many trades to reach out to people that have been on the show and even Maple Leaf has reached out to Jorge from DGR to talk shop. We love that our little podcast is adding to the construction industry.Don’t forget we have Construction History from Manny at the beginning of the show, Building Code Talk with Manny at the midpoint and Green Book Talk with Carlito at the near end.Thank You so much Chris and Jason for joining the show, sharing all of that information about your beginnigns and where Maple Leaf Construction is heading and changign the industry. #94 Turn Key Shoring with Matt and we are talking building a better kind of shoring company
EWe get right out of The Construction Life gate with food that Matt brought us from Speducci, pizzas, spiedini and more, what a pure gem of a gentleman. Matt began his construction career like most, sweeping floors in sub division and once he saw other trades digging holes for the next build he was hooked and wanted to know everything about excavation. The official term that Matt performs is Engineered Earth Retention Shoring. We get chatting about his very first machine and what that cost him to rent per week and then quoting his first job right from the cab of that excavator. Espresso machines come up of course and we get right into the good, the bad and the Chinese machines that are ruining the true espresso nature of the coffee. That chat brings us right back to shoring machinery and back to the construction site. The connection of Chinese tooling vs Italian and American is what determines how successful your business will be. 1/3 operator, 1/3 machine and 1/3 tooling is what makes his business successful and Matt has done his R&D to streamline a very successful business. That tooling talk brings us right into his loyalty to tools and brands and which tools are best for his business and why. Matt talks about his online network of shoring, concrete, machinery connections from Russia, Germany, Italy and more, where he is always networking with them and looking to build his business better by way of technique and tools. We even get into how Covid effected his business, how many guys stayed at home, how many guys came back and how he adjusted everything to survive. Where is Turnkey heading Matt? He’s getting into drilling for geothermal and being a part of geofields. Matt has the machinery and manpower to drill and dig so why not expand a successful business. He is also getting into dewatering on job sites, where you basically drill a hole to let the water table rise up to grade and escape from the excavated area. Matt has built a successful business based on quality and safety first followed by profit, it’s a TrunKey culture that he has built and everyone associated with his brand has that common goal. Thank you so much Matt for being on the show. Don’t forget we have Construction History from Manny at the beginning of the show, Building Code Talk with Manny at the midpoint and Green Book Talk with Carlito at the near end.Thank You so much Matt for joining the show, all the amazing food and sharing so much great insight about your construction shoring business and all of the amazing projects you have had a chance to be a part of from the very beginning. Find him at @turnkeyshoring www.turnkeyss.ca [email protected] and his YouTube Channel – Turn Key.Thank you to Mark from @skyluxeroofing for letting us record the show in his breakroom and welcome him and his guys always walking through the recording. #93 We have Brendan Goulding and a different take on the apprentice route
EWe begin with a specific shout out to David from @blucarpentry and how he gets a good laugh at Manny and Carlito having a hard time converting imperial to metric. Enjoy.Brendan gets right into his pretty sweet IG handle @redsealcarpenter and his matching license plate that has been stolen before. Brendan wrote his test, achieved higher than 70% and that grade got him into his first year of apprentice and with that got a secure job with an established builder. Right of the construction gate and he’s making great moves. We get right into Journeymen wages across the country, the national average and local average and what the work day is like or what it should be like.Brendan makes the statement that all Carpenters should be licensed just like Plumbers, HVAC, Electricians and we discuss would it be better industry if that was the case? Will the cost of you running your business and the cost of your service you provide, will it increase? Brendan brings up a great point, how much do you value your worth? We have some fun with what type of tool brand is Brendan and that leads us into job site etiquette and supplying or not supplying tools to apprentices. Then we touch upon females in trades and how they get a higher incentive from the government to get a career in trades. As an apprentice you have to go into construction and construction education with an open mind, check the ego at the door, you are there to learn, to watch and to listen. 1, 2, 3, if you can’t retain the task and it takes you more than 3 attempts and you are continuously wasting material, then you are gone and should consider another career. Farmers make great contractors and Brendan has farming in his family history.Don’t forget we have Construction History from Manny at the beginning of the show, Building Code Talk with Manny at the midpoint and Green Book Talk with Carlito at the near end.Thank You so much Brandan for joining the show and sharing so much great insight about your construction path and all of the amazing projects you have had a chance to be a part of. #88 Garbage all kinds of construction garbage with the great folks from Bins Plus Disposal
EWe have Valerie and John from Bins Plus Disposal on the show talking everything to do with garbage. Right into contractor and client expectations and how they just keep throwing all kinds of garbage and couldn’t care less about separation of garbage for the environment. From there we get into our biggest pet peeve about bin companies that don’t care, driveway protection. A lot of garbage can be and should be recycled such as concrete, asphalt and dirt, please don’t mix these up or worse place all of them into one bin because that becomes a full waste bin and will cost more. A little garbage care goes a long way. At Bins Plus they offer a “load and go” service where they will come to deliver and bin and they will stay there and assist with the loading of garbage and then take the bin with them. Great service. Considering a bin for your next stage of construction, calling on all you trades and homeowners looking to declutter your homes please consider giving Bins Plus Disposal a call for your next bin.We wrap up this show with a brand new segment and we call it, the Ten Questions of Construction, you will love how our guests will answer these questions.Don’t forget we have Construction History from Manny at the beginning of the show, Building Code Talk with Manny at the midpoint and Green Book Talk with Carlito at the near end.Thank You so much Valerie and John for joining the show and sharing so much great insight about garbage and more. We are talking about living in your home, wellness in your home and how simple things like the smell of grass and how impactful those scents are to your mental state. Since 2009 she has been a resource for the residential trade sector, a subject matter specialist and advocate for Inclusive Design and one of Canada's experts on living in place and wellness in the home. She’s a Certified Living in Place Professional (CLIPP) and a Certified Aging in Place Specialist (CAPS). She just completed several Universal Design courses with the University of Buffalo Architectural Program and working on her Rick Hansen Accessibility Certification and her WELL AP designation. This isn’t just about the older homeowners and wanting to stay living in place, think about expecting mothers, people with disabilities, accidents, delivery furniture there is so much to consider when renovating for what life has in store for you and your families. Homes should adapt to us over a lifetime and not us adapt to the home, renovating should be adaptable. Renovating for the aging population requires know how in lighting, natural and artificial and task lighting, space to move around, door widths, soundproofing, and more. These types of renovations are based on emotions more than any other types of renos, you have to handle the client’s emotions carefully. Its really important to understand the benefits of color, sound, light, air, water, and even wood grains and how these details can add to your wellness in your home.We wrap up this show with a brand new segment and we call it, the Ten Questions of Construction, you will love how our guests will answer these questions.Don’t forget we have Construction History from Manny at the beginning of the show, Building Code Talk with Manny at the midpoint and Green Book Talk with Carlito at the near end.Thank You so much Linda for joining the show and sharing so much great insight about living in place, wellness in place and building better for the aging population. #82 Marc Fraser from Craigmhor Construction Talking apprenticeships and construction education
EMarc decided at 16 years of age he wanted to be a Bricklayer, that simple. Listen to find out how and why he came to become a bricklayer. Craig’s career in construction began at 14 years old in demolition, pick up a couch and moved it three times and that was it, he’s in construction for good. Marc had the mindset to look at construction though the numbers, the power of money and time, he was 14 years old making 16 dollars an hour while his circle of friends were making 8 dollars an hour at an easier job choice.Marc quickly developed the skill set and mind set to earn while he learned. He looked at the numbers behind all of his moves and he based decisions on those numbers, very smart. There are so many government rules and regulations regarding hiring apprenticeships that is basically forces companies to NOT want to work with the program, this needs to change. Marc loves being a mason so much that he looks at the work like a hobby and his business as his job, great attitude. After losing his job due to the paperwork his employer refused to be a part of Marc decided it was time to go to school, what a great move for him. Then came the opportunity to roll the dice once again and Marc started his own business where he could now dictate where his life will go.Marc has own opinion on Millennials and how he feels they have no accountability. Marc brings up some seriously valuable traits and expectations that every younger person should be fighting for, what a motivational moment. Marc discusses the 40 hour week and how today’s Tradesperson can work smarter during those 40 hours and turn their business into a venture with no financial ceiling cap. As we wrap up Marc talks about being a mentor to other up and coming masons and he’s more than willing to help anyone and everyone that reaches out to him. Marc honestly wants to move the construction industry forward and there is always room for improvements. What a great show, thanks Marc.We wrap up this show with a brand new segment and we call it, the Ten Questions of Construction, you will love how our guests will answer these questions.Don’t forget we have Construction History from Manny at the beginning of the show, Building Code Talk with Manny at the midpoint and Green Book Talk with Carlito at the near end.Thank You Marc for joining the show and sharing so much great insight about apprenticeships, and all the education you sourced out from the beginning to today. #81 Marcelino joins us and we get talking about the big Hardscaping projects he has worked on for 30 plus years
EWhat an intro – Pink Floyd Another Brick in The Wall the Portuguese version. Marcelino sets the tone of this show and we love it. A lot of education for Marcelino but no passion, no love, no drive, he wanted hands on and he found it with an established company Melo Landscaping. Marcelino has been with them for over 25 years now and there are things that he learned from them that he would have never learned anywhere else. Marcelino learned very early on, working for a smaller Mom and Pop shop they were going take care of him as long as he worked hard. Landscaping is not an old man game and Marcelino and the companies he works for are more than willing to work with the younger guys and share the knowledge, share the money, share the work but unfortunately half the guys are not interested.Marcelino shares a lot of trade tips on how best to handle runs offs, paver base, concrete spec base and even a jab at PL Portuguese Luck. Marcelino get into one of our fav segments, asking contractors about their fav tools and tool brands and he does not bleed, blue, red, yellow or any color, he uses the right tool for the right job, great honesty here and great insight from a real contractor sharing his real experience on the job site with tools, unlike the wanna be tool reviewers and their one hour staged set up. Marcelino takes down all types of stone projects and the challenges behind each one.We discuss the big toys and how he feels about each of the brands and why. If you are in hardscaping and have the big toys and live in a 4 season climate you will be snow plowing so factor that into your purchasing of the big toys. As we closer to the end of this amazing show we dive into heated driveways and steps and how this very expensive luxury is becoming the norm. What an amazing show, Marcelino shared so much with us.Don’t forget we have Construction History from Manny at the beginning of the show, Building Code Talk with Manny at the midpoint and Green Book Talk with Carlito at the near end.Thank You Marcelino for joining the show and sharing so much great insight about construction, contractors, hardscaping, landscaping, and all kinds of stone work. #80 Building Inspector opens up about Construction, Contractors and the Code Part II
We get right into Part II beginning with do inspectors look for any contractor licenses? From there we get into the requirements to become an inspector, all of the exams associated with each section of a home and once you pass the exams you can begin to inspect each section of the Code. We get right into key details of the Code and how the powers at be came to sign off on these Codes and we bring up the “ball” drain test and all of the stages of inspections and what Inspectors are typically looking for all the way to final occupancy inspection. We dissect the Ontario Building Code and discuss the different Parts and how they apply to us and our projects and that leads us to making changes on site and how they should be addressed on the drawings and the proper paperwork. Then we get into zoning and how that can impact your new build, your addition, your renovation and all contractors should be aware of this information and how it implies to you in your city. What happens if you begin construction without a permit and someone from the City Planning Dept. is notified what can happen to you the homeowner, the contractors and any trades working on site. Who actually receives any and all orders to compile? Boosting about how many homes and or projects you as a contractor have built means nothing to an Inspector, they are there to see the current project and the quality on that project, not previous work. Bottom line, Inspectors do not inspect for the quality of workmanship, they inspect for the building code.Don’t forget we have Construction History from Manny at the beginning of the show, Building Code Talk with Manny at the midpoint and Green Book Talk with Carlito at the near end.Thank You Mr. Smith Building Inspector for joining the show and sharing so much great insight about construction, contractors and the code. This is The Construction Lifewww.theconstructionlife.com
#79 Building Inspector opens up about Construction, Contractors and the Code Part I
We open the show with a great tune and then we get right into the questions that were asked by followers, a lot of questions that every contractor have asked themselves, now we finally get a reply. Inspectors expectations when they arrive on site and does a dirty job site factor into the inspection? Plans are never approved, they are reviewed and there is a difference, understand the difference and you as a contractor will understand the inspector that much better. Dealing with a disagreement and or confrontation with an inspector should be handled carefully.Ontario Canada the Code is law, it is a building code regulation under the Building Code Act and every contractor should make an effort to purchase a copy or download key details for your projects. What is the true purpose of the building code, inspectors, engineers and contractors? Inspectors have the book knowledge, contractors have the on-site knowledge, we should be working together to make the best project. What really are the basic requirements to becoming a building inspector? What laws can they enforce? Do they have the power to shut down a job site? So many questions for our guest.Don’t be afraid to ask questions, embrace questions from Inspectors, Architects, Designers, other Contractors, Suppliers, build your Circle of Construction on every single renovation project. Can an Inspector walk onto any job site regardless of a warrant and or permission? We wrap up the first part of this show discussing offences and noncompliance of said orders, very interesting to understand your rights as a contractor. One final thought with this show, bribing inspectors.Don’t forget we have Construction History from Manny at the beginning of the show, Building Code Talk with Manny at the midpoint and Green Book Talk with Carlito at the near end.Thank You Mr. Smith the Building Inspector for joining the show and sharing so much great insight about construction, contractors and the code. This is The Construction Lifewww.theconstructionlife.com
#78 Engineering with Waddell Engineering with Larry and Brian Part II
We get right back into it and begin with post beam structural engineering, very cool talk. We discuss fixed tie offs for commercial and residential projects and how they are designed and built. Larry and Brian discuss rigging, spreader bars and lifting beams leading into the 108 max length of engineered 2 Ply trusses and that brings the conversation to mechanically graded lumber. From there we get into ICF structure, concrete roof slabs, 25mm rebar for structure and raft slabs. There is such a thing as The National Farm Code. How would a couple of engineers build a shed? We get right into it and that takes us to Fun Fences and how to build a better fence and from there we get into20 foot tall candy cane posts at Wonderland and even a structural Santa. We get into a lot of client custom requests and how engineering is always the last detail to be considered, such as adding all of this glass in a tall wall overlooking the backyard, such a recipe for issues. We get discussing modifying existing engineered details to suit new ideas, such as adding solar panels to an older roof system. Finally!! We get down to the word Sistering and why things are not called Brothering. The guys tell us about a situation where a client had removed key structure steel posts and welding a part of a truck frame to the existing I beam, crazy what some people will do. The engineers even bring up helical piles and working with @TechnometalposthdWe look to close out this great second half of the show talking about not needing engineers and you can build a house off of building code rules and regulations. We wouldn’t, we will always have an engineer as part of the scope of work. We leave things with one more book reference, The Canadian Foundation Manual for all of your concrete requirements.Don’t forget we have Construction History from Manny at the beginning of the show, Building Code Talk with Manny at the midpoint and Green Book Talk with Carlito at the near end.Thank You Larry and Brian so much for joining the show and sharing so much great insight about engineering, working with contractors and clients. The beauty of engineer stamping hand sketch drawings and the world of Mennonites requiring building permits and stamped drawings. We get into the Wood Design Manual where it talks about the strength of different wood species. The we get into the difference between the “code” and what engineers can do for your structures with a lead into live and dead loads. We wrap up Part I talking about Mennonites and how engineering and building office still applies to them, too many more questions so we take a pause and return with a Part II follow up and so many more great stories, load calculations and everything to do with engineering.Don’t forget we have Construction History from Manny at the beginning of the show, Building Code Talk with Manny at the midpoint and Green Book Talk with Carlito at the near end.Thank You Larry and Brian so much for joining the show and sharing so much great insight about engineering, working with contractors and clients. #76 Revisit Mom and Pops Shops during the Covid-19 Pandemic
ELet’s get right into it, COVID and what is it all about, what is true, what is fear, what is ignorance? Why did we have to stop using cash? Cash has always been dirty. Mississauga Hardware sill accepts cash cause not every contractor lives off of credit / plastic. As much as we have fun the show and share jokes we are still being serious regarding all the deaths and businesses that had to close down for good. This is so serious. We ask that people be smart about things and don’t let fear drive your actions. Let’s not even forget how disgusting people are by throwing their masks and gloves anywhere and everywhere, that is just stupid and lazy.Construction has to keep going, they need to keep going but trades can’t get dust masks, they can’t get what they need to keep working. This can’t help but to get a little political regarding why there is a delay in masks for everyone, Carlito shares a few thoughts. The digital age was already in motion to change things and now Covid has sped this digital change full tilt and those businesses who don’t look to adapt and change will not survive. How crazy people got over toilet paper and now vitamin C are back order, people need to understand how things work and how your body works when it comes to protecting yourself from viruses. Bad situations come up for a reason and Covid is now teaching people how to adapt and consider a new kind of future, and retirement.Contractors need to understand online shopping, prepping, running a business is the new normal and contractors need to embrace this. There will be a delay in replenishing tools and accessories, that is a simple fact, will prices go up? Possibly, expect that to happen and factor that into your new pricing. Clients in the end will have to accept the higher costs of renovating.Instead of Building Code with Manny, Manny talks about the actual Covid numbers in Canada as of May 12 2020. Ontario government and Ontarians have been doing a great job of slowing down the spread. Thank you to everyone and all of the frontline workers, you mean everything to us.Carlito has to throw out 3 gloves and Manny and Tony don’t understand because he has 2 hands. Oh you don’t want to miss his replay on this one.Don’t forget we have Construction History from Manny at the beginning of the show, Building Code Talk with Manny at the midpoint and Green Book Talk with Carlito at the near end.Thank You Tony so much for joining the show yet again and we wish it was under better circumstances and sharing so much great insight about Covid and your customers. #75 Historical Plasterer with Kieran Reid from KR Plasterer
EOur 75th SHOW!!!What a treat we have today, we are going to be talking about the origin of plaster work, real lime based plaster. We begin with our 75th GIVEAWAY contest rules, we have 8 questions, answer any 3 correctly and the first 10 listeners to do so will receive a The Construction Life PRIZE. Good Luck everyone.Back in the day Plasterers and Masons and even Roofers would work hand in hand and it wasn’t unheard of for these trades to cross the work line. It was Kieran’s Mom that persuaded him to give Plastering Apprentice a shot and if It didn’t work out he could always fall back on his physiotherapy studies. Original plaster work isn’t just for the wealthy, clients that are aware of sustainable building are asking for Kieran’s services, the market is growing in Toronto. It all begins with wire mesh installed tight from one side to the other.Plaster is pure lime and sand, that is what and why it is as strong as it is. You have to screen the sand; it is brick sand but there is a special technique to achieving the perfect sand to lime mix. The graduals of the sand are the binding element of the mix, you need the correct size and shape. So many positives attached to plasters, such as better sound absorbing properties, and he fire rating is far superior than drywall, there are health benefits too, lime is a living material and it is always cleaning your air and making your home healthier. At around $18 a square you never see any butt joints, no nail pops, better sound, stronger and longer lasting, that is the beauty of plaster. So many custom made jigs made from zinc instead of sheet metal to rebuild older work and introduce new work and new techniques. Talking about all of those special details from, dentils, flowers, eggs and darts, cow tongues, all the fancy stuff that you see in those beautiful crowns. Kieran walks us through the many key steps to building plaster crown. There are different kinds of lime to use for different stages and steps of the process.Dealing with key tools, techniques, plunge mixing, humidity and more, there are so many variables when it comes to this trade. Kieran taught a class at Willowbank School and the kids in his class were embracing his knowledge and wanted to learn his techniques, Kieran actually wants more people to get into his trade, we really need to keep this one alive. Kieran even shares his favorite crown, a nice gold one with lots of jewels. We discuss Respect The Next Trade and this statement and fast becoming a movement is adding to the construction industry. And yes you can use plaster to build baseboards, wainscoting and more, the technique and material is super hard and durable, this leads us to In-situ, which translates to On Site. Kieran shares a number of terms related to plaster work, great info.Don’t forget we have Construction History from Manny at the beginning of the show, Building Code Talk with Manny at the midpoint and Green Book Talk with Carlito at the near end.Thank You Kieran so much for joining the show and sharing so much great insight about plaster, real plaster work and more on this beautiful skill. Check out Kieran @kr_plasterer word of mouth is the best way to find him and his skills. This is The Construction Lifewww.theconstructionlife.com
#74 Euan from Renossance Inc joins us and we are talking working on older homes – century homes
EThe show begins with Euan and his rendition of a classic Kenny Rogers track and we love it. A few housekeeping shout outs and Euan was so kind to bring us homemade olives and Renossance tees, what a gentleman. It all begins in BC and Euan moving to Toronto, working with tradesmen from B.C. go figure, working as a plumbing apprentice working on sprinklers and black pipe and a lot of oil, possibly olive oil, that led to a very bad motorcycle accident that changed things. The bad head injury brought Euan to become an orthotic and prosthetic technician at George Brown. He did amputee limb fabrication for about 4 years and felt he was losing his focus and felt it was time to move on, that brings us to monkeys and Euan’s dislike of monkeys and for good reason, especially monkeys on the job site.Let’s talk older homes and how and why they have lasted, a lot of over engineering and no building code at the time and yet they are still around. The basic principles of older homes and how they heated them, lived in them, such fascinating talk. After the hospital work Euan went back to school to study Geology and Environmental Science to get a Master in BioGeo Chemistry so he figured his brain was working perfectly fine. Where do you go with that kind of education? He became an Environmental Consultant assessing soil contamination by excavating monitoring wells, with a focus around older gas stations. He did that for 4 years and then wanted out of that kind of work and since he worked construction to pay for his education he got into construction for good. How one job from a friend led him to building his business into what it is today based on learning every day, building the proper team and respect for renovations.Euan says something that hits hard, “you can’t incentives people by paying them more.” So very true. About building your business with the Carrot or The Stick mindset and coming out on top. You really need to be an asshole when it comes to running a construction business for any of your guys to listen to you and your needs.Take the time to drive around town and check out other job sites and chat with the trades there, pick their brains, network, that is how Euan found a great female mason, @stoneangelsmasonry she is a purist and respects the old school way of stone work. Big talk about mortars and what is spec and how It sometimes goes against how things should be restored, maybe the architects should spend a bit more time on site and discuss things with the people actually doing the work and seeing the progress. Street elevation is what Heritage is always most concerned about.Apparently Carlito found an 1828 Gatorade bottle, must hear this story.Don’t forget we have Construction History from Manny at the beginning of the show, Building Code Talk with Manny at the midpoint and Green Book Talk with Carlito at the near end.Thank You Euan so much for joining the show and sharing so much great insight about restoration, renovations, preservation and more on these beautiful homes. Check out Euan @renossance_inc www.renossanceinc.com and find his email and phone number on the web site for your next renovation. This is The Construction Lifewww.theconstructionlife.com
#72 Zak from Picture Perfect Painters talking about painting and prepping and more prepping
EZak walks us through his early days, university days and how he got into painting, how a flyer left on his classroom desk for student painters inspired him to become a painter. Manny follows that up with telling home owners that painting is a justifiable and skilled trade and not everyone especially clients thinking because some idiot taught them to do a “W” on a wall gives clients the experience they require to paint. Painting is 95% about prep and 5% about painting. Understood?Painters are the last trade on site and are expected to repair, cover up, rebuild, rework all of trades before them and that’s not fair to painters and the homeowners. A first on TCL, Manny compares open miters left for painters to deal with to a Penial Surgeon leaving a gap and not expecting the patient to be unhappy.Zak walks us through his steps, from first day arrival to the final reveal, what products and techniques, all of the great insider tips. Step ONE – tape and mask everything with the correct tape and that even goes for stucco ceilings. Lighting is paramount on a jobsite, from installed fixtures to flood lights like the Festool unit. Clients dictating which brand of paint right down to primers, is this fair for the experienced contractor and the results that contractors have achieved through on site real world experience? Color matching and what to consider based on each brand and the substrates an blacklisted colors and why. Note that every single kind of surface has it’s own type of primer to use and professional painters know this and how to once again prep things. Then we get into sprayers and what really makes a good sprayer. Best practices when priming poplar, MDF, HDF, LDF and CDF, a new name for a crappy product to Pine finger joint, Maple, Cedar it is all shellac primers. Getting into older homes and testing for oil or lead based paints, Zak offers up a great Trade Tip. We discuss prepping and priming and painting drywall in a perfect world. We wrap things up with drying time and prep times and the correct times it takes to paint professionally. Lastly, we reveal our favorite colors, a hint at wallpaper and venetian plastering, and lacquers, a few topics we will be discussing on the next “paint” podcast.Zak and his crew has always worked by the philosophy, try to help the person behind you, in front of you and who hired you. It is a great way to handle the scope of work and daily ups and downs.Don’t forget we have Construction History from Manny at the beginning of the show, Building Code Talk with Manny at the midpoint and Green Book Talk with Carlito at the near end.Thank You Zak so much for joining the show and sharing so much great insight about painting, construction, renovations and more. #71 Cabinetry Installations with Tony from TC Installations Inc - 20 plus years of great construction knowledge
We have Tony Cordeiro of TC Service & Installations INC on the show today talking about cabinetry installs and more. With over 20 years of experience, Tony has a lot to say about The Construction Life so you don’t want to miss this show. The show begins with Tony singing our first Portuguese tune as our intro and we loved it. Thanks Tony.We get right into the show with a question about the origin of dust extraction, who and when?So now we get into the real hammer Tony got as a gift from his parents when he was 3 years old and that was the beginning of his construction career and we jump to high school and building construction and cabinetry course that set him on a path to the pros. His first real job was actually at a bank and that paved the way for Tony to run a better business, so important to learn your math. Finally got into a shop and it was all sanding and finishing for Tony and so important that he did.We get into a lot of Toronto history and construction shops in and around town and of course a few Portuguese jokes do come up. Tony was given his first chance be a shop foreman that believed in him and that established his career, word spread around, mixed in with a couple major life lessons and that was the beginning of TC Installations Inc. A cabinet maker, installer and overall super nice gentleman, one of the best in construction.Tony’s Dad, a retired renovator always told Tony, "we have to figure out a way to solve this" and that has been Tony’s go to on the job site. Tony is known as one of the cleanest trades on any job site and he makes sure his team feels the same way, must be a Portuguese thing. We get into a series of cabinetry company names from all over the world and what Tony thinks about it them and cabinetry details from North America and all over. What are Tony’s thoughts on shaker cabinetry? Tony also services these cabinetries’ and that is an art in itself. It is about time that we state all showers and kitchen walls should be built with LSL lumber, no more dimensional lumber for these areas. Then we get into Tony’s way of starting the work, where to begin, how to proceed and how to wrap up and get things ready for templating. Have electronics taken over way too much of the kitchen? Should we have plywood or drywall for main kitchen cabinetry walls? We do get into Tony fav tools and vehicles from what’s in his vehicle and the shop.Don’t forget we have Construction History from Manny, Building Code Talk with Manny and Green Book Talk with Carlito.Thank You Tony so much for joining the show and sharing so much about construction, renovations and more. From brick, to lead roofs, to those original windows and more.Ian begins with school at Algonquin College and how there really is a shortage in stone and mason trades and we have to go outside the country to find good guys, Irish, Polish and others. Ian brings up a massive point, with any trade you can take that skill anywhere in the world and you will find work, that is a fact. We love hearing that. Learning from the time and actions during his Union days which brought Ian to planning for his retirement one day.We get into a little safety and proper set up of scaffolding because when you work in high end neighborhoods, the neighbors are watching. This part of the podcast leads us into a scenario in Ian’s past that could have been a lot worse. A serious injury when he was working in a crypt with a hospital right across the street.Let’s talk about the seven P’s Prior Proper Planning Prevents Piss Poor Performance, everyone needs to understand you have to slow it all down to speed it up. Ian talks about construction recipes, where he worked on something, did all the testing and figured out what he needed to restore the damage and Ian stays in touch with client’s years later with the hope that they will hire him to move forward with the work.Let’s get into heritage buildings in Toronto, NYC, Boston, Chicago and Philly and why Toronto is terrible at restoring and would rather knock down. Then the big questions, how does one price a restoration job? We get into stone details of yesterday and compare them to today’s building details. And let’s talk Widths or Wydths of brick and stone. Then we get into the paperwork behind actual heritage buildings and the work involved to get the work started, building permits and the years attached to doing the work along with the building reports that Ian has been task with. EWe are recording live at Foam Core Mouldings 100,000 square foot manufacturing facility in Niagara Falls. Over 1000 different profiles to choose from and you can still walk in with a custom order and have that turned around in days. Working with foamcore panels, siding, all kinds of options from Foamcore Mouldings for exterior and plaster interior products.Let’s get right into the origin of stucco. Testing the product to hold up to 4 seasons including Canadian and USA harsh winters and hot summers. It all begins by cutting the product on a Hot Wire machine and from there is built up with plaster or a cement embedded with mesh for flexibility, durability and strength. We even ask Matt, what is the largest sized crown and he tells us about a 36” crown, Holy Crown!! Matt tells us about working with Heritage buildings and repairing the old with new technologies like his product.Matt tells us about his own personal build going on right now and how he is mixing and matching up different types of products to build a beautiful home, from his new foam siding, foam soffit and more.We get right into DuRock products and best applications and the short cuts that a few take. #68 Self-Leveling Flooring with Paul from Mack Constructions Inc.
What an amazing show we have today, Paul from Mack Constructions Inc. and we are talking self-leveling products and applications. Believe it, Paul is one of the leaders and he actually began in plumbing as a licensed Master Plumber but then one day on a job he was asked if he could and he did and that was the beginning of his self-leveling career in construction.Paul went from doing one job a month to doing 8 jobs a week and two crews and hasn’t looked back. Pumping the material as high as 14 floors and he could have gone even higher and further. Always up for the challenge. He has done leveling basements, with or without radiant, bonding to old and new concrete, you name it, Paul and his crew have done it.He exclusively works with LaFarge Agilia Screed and loves the product for so many reasons. What are the differences between Agilia and Concrete and why concrete guys do and don’t get it. What a floating floor system really means and how it really works. Working from different thicknesses, as thin as 10mm to as thick as 9 inches, Mack Constructions Inc. knows how to make your floor perfect.Paul gets right into estimating, scope of work, steps involved, calculating true level before during and after right down to the mm, taking the final floor to a perfect sanded surface ready for finishing. Staircases and how important it is NOT to order your finish staircase until the pour has happened because Paul knows floor framing is never perfect and self-leveling is about being perfect. We even get into a little self-leveling vs dry pack vs barrel bag mixing products and listen to find out who wins.We even get into sound proofing and Paul loves to work with MSL Sonopro underlayment, it rolls out onto the subfloor, taped to each other and never stapled to the subfloor and what a difference it makes with those hard walking sounds. Working with Schluter BekoTek foam products, why use it and the added benefit by lowering the overall weight. We also get into slump testing each batch regardless if the batch was tested at the yard, what types of primers to use and where, taking care of any issues and always making the customer, the GC or the homeowner happy from the start to the end.We end the show with word of mouth from digital to old school and how has Paul built his business.Don’t forget we have Construction History from Manny, Building Code Talk with Manny and Green Book Talk with Carlito.Thank you Paul so much for joining the show and sharing so much about Self-Leveling. #64 Jim Caruk - The Godfather of Construction nearly 50 years of experience to share Part I
EWe have Jim Caruk, the man, legend, the Godfather of Construction on the show and he has nearly 50 years of experience to share with us. So much talk we had to split the show into two parts, Corleone would be so proud.Starting his career in construction right out of high school with a major in trades, sheet metal, Jim went right into Union work, the year was 1973. He did the sheet metal work for 15 years, worked hard, learned a lot about the business and people, made an enemy or two along the way, then decided to go on his own. Began a two-man renovation business and went right into the work for the love of it. Started with small renos, then came an addition with no access to the back, so Jim suggested go underneath the home, they did. Turned out, that particular reno was for a TV producer and with a camera following Jim the hit show Real Renos was born, that was the early 2000’s and went on for 8 years. Jim had one request with the show, whatever happened, happened, it doesn’t get changed, and that went both ways, the clients can say whatever they want and so could he, and he did. That is what made it real compared to what is currently on TV today.Jim has had his fair share of issues with the Ministry of Labour and he brings up a few of the good ones, mixed in with Inspectors arriving on site. Jim gets right into what makes a good contractor, what makes a successful renovation company, yes there are bad clients and there are great ones that have hired him several times. Of course Jim has lost money on projects, walked away from projects but he has always stayed loyal to the construction and his passion, and building.Lastly on this first part, Jim tells us why homes are so expensive today. He shares how clients know how to screw contractors over. Why he is well respected by his crew that have been with him for 2 decades or more and by the new guys.A massive thank you to Jim for spending the 3 plus hours with us talking construction. Really appreciate your time.Find Jim at www.carukhall.com@jimcaruk@carukhallconstructionThis is The Construction Lifewww.theconstructionlife.com
