#215 Heavy Duty Homes is on the SHOW with Phil Russo the owner and his project manager Philip Games

E

Huge thank you to all the listeners, messages of support, questions about construction, the network this show has been building as we head closer and closer to our 300th show event, watch for it in August and this years Labor Day is something you don’t want to miss, Carlito and Manny has some big ideas. Please leave a rating and a review on iTunes and you can now leave a star rating on Spotify. Thank You On with the show. Most of this show discusses employees versus subtrades. Something different, Phil saw an opportunity and he went full force into it and that one move made his business jump to 56 projects in 2021, congrats guys and the work is insane. With most of the world taking crazy pills Phil had a great idea to get his new business going after so many clients pulled out and took the deposits back, his idea worked and the new Heavy Duty Homes was off. 2020 Phil and his team was able to do 8-10 projects, 2021 he brought in 57 projects and these were not small projects, being hungry requires a huge dining table. How did he do all this? He stopped doing the sub trades and started working with employees, he created divisions to his business of all the key essential trades, hardwood, painting, drywall, tile and many others, this one shift in the business allowed him to take control of his projects and deliver for his clients. Phil pays Manny a huge compliment by saying he based his new business format off of Hardcore Renos, and Respect The Next Trade, much respect Phil, thank you very much. The referrals is how Heavy Duty Homes continues to be successful, they take great pride and they make sure that the client is always happy, always happy. When they get contacted by past clients about inviting the crew over for a BBQ that speaks volumes, well done gentlemen. Phil is finally off the tools and it feels weird to him, his tool is his keyboard, he’s still adapting but he understands that it has to be this way, every contractor knows that day is coming and you need to prepare for it. Heavy Duty Homes is still learning and as Phil shares, every day is a learning day. They are taking what they went through last year, applying it to this year, anticipating another 57 projects for this year and we wish them all the best and all the well-deserved success. #214 Pino Pirillo and Giuliano Tarantini from International Visual Corporation talking about custom fabrication

In our last show from Montreal, we dive deep into the custom world of manufacturing and fabrication where every idea begins on a napkin. We have Pino Pirillo, business development and Giuliano Tarantini a prototype on the show and sharing the 60 plus years of this incredible business. With a facility at a size of 260,000 square feet IVC can handle any project and on today’s show we will discuss the entire process. A lot of respect goes out to IVC and how they never stopped when Covid hit, they were producing 10’s of thousands of acrylic guards for retail stores across Canada and the USA. At the beginning of the pandemic, IVC was concerned and made the decision to lay staff off but in a slight twist of faith an order came in as the owners were making their way to inform staff and they were lucky enough not to lay anyone off. This show quickly shifts gears into the wonderful world of clients, clients’ expectations, budgets, sales, communications, and it is all relevant to construction, a must listen. Pino walks us through the entire process of production from napkin to final mock-up, what an interesting chat. Pino shares a lot of the science behind the fabrication and the why things are fabricated the way they are. Pino shares some great insight into cold calling and sales pitching for all of you younger business owners, don’t want to miss this chat. Yes, we discussed expectations of new employees, hiring and firing, why this generations expects validation for a job they were tasked with. Again, we are not trying to speak negatively, we are trying to understand and educate. Thank you so much to IVC International Visual Company for being a guest and hosting these 5 shows in Montreal. #213 Filippo Placentino of Cr3ative Construction Company is here to share plenty of construction

E

The show opens with one of the best show tunes ever! Then the guys assess the grappa and realize we need more grappa because both Manny and Danny are feeling cockatail. Filippo was kind enough to bring one of the OG Hardcore Renos t-shirt, one of 1000’s that have been given away over the years, so nice to finally meet a follower and someone that received a HCR T. Thank you Filippo. Coming from a family background of trades, he didn’t begin in construction until 27, in his younger years he pursued a career in playing professional football, European football, by the way, they most watched sport in the entire world, followed by the number two most watch sport if Formula 1. Just a bit of facts on TCL. The guys discuss traveling, getting to Vegas, the hatred towards the quality of the structure in Vegas, heading to European trade shows, and Danny has not been to Vegas, he wants the full experience and is waiting to plan that one day. The constant topic of material shortages and affecting the completion of projects and in turn final payments. Filippo has a few things to say about this. Clients, we discuss clients and how to handle them and the many pitfalls they bring to the construction project. Extras, how to handle them, when to handle them, don’t be shy about them and be upfront with your clients and don’t let the client navigate around the extras because of the schedule. We even discuss the wonderful world of going to court, something that every tradesperson will experience at least once in their career. That’s a fact and you will do yourself a service by speaking to others that have gone down that route. It’s always about budget, never lower your price, reduce the scope, never lower your price, get your clients to eliminate scope of work and that is how you magically reduce the budget. A 36-year-old, a 43 year old and a 50 year old share construction war wounds with certain pains and hearing issues and just PPE, everyone please please take care of your bodies now, don’t over lift, don’t ignore hearing, respirator, safety goggles protection, this is extremely important. This is the last show of our Montreal visit and so the good old CCQ must be discussed and it is discussed at length including the pension side of it, it’s not good. We would love to have the CCQ on the show. We close out the show discussing mental health, and should it be a part of our health and safety fees? #212 Philippe Gaudreau from Construction Anorak Inc. the new kid on the block and loads to consider

E

1 year on his own after 6 years of working with others Philippe has a lot of questions for us and the industry, he is so passionate about. Incredibly refreshing to have a tradesperson that loves construction but wants to learn more on how best to navigate through the construction world. This is going to be one amazing show. The show opens with a classic Quebec song. Just to set up a construction business you will spend $4-5K just in paperwork, no jobs, no income, nothing and right out of the gate you need t spend that money and that doesn’t even factor in your insurances, your vehicle, your office, your tools, that is just the amount you need to pay the useless cash grab government. The truth is if government establishes a division, in the public’s eye it’s all about safety but all this division is doing is handing out fines and not even discussing safety then it’s a cash grab. There is always 3 perceptions, the publics, the job sites and then the truth and this government needs to understand what they are doing wrong, because there is wrong going on here. Let’s talk about it.The conversation of cash is shared and discussed and explained through the eyes of the working tradesperson. An interesting proposition is presented, Danny and Manny want to break down all the expenses and income of an average construction business and present those findings to the government, the group feels that the business will be in the red every time and makes you think what is the point of operating a business legally? Even a kid like Philippe is considering leaving the province and setting up somewhere else, that’s the reality the government is either ignoring or simply doesn’t care.During the show we discover Philippe invested into a property in Nicaragua, catches us off guard but makes for an amazing conversation, he had plans to build a hotel there and then Covid BS hits. Danny brings up a great point when the talk shifts to designers, they should also have to get a CCQ card, right now they don’t have too. Let’s piss off some more people in construction, welcome to The Construction Life. The grappa continues to flow and we end up polishing off a full bottle on this show. Towards the end of the show we find out that Philippe was a part of the mechanical team behind the nose of fighter jets, formally studied mechanical engineering, then marketing, then bar tending, bought and sold a restaurant and now construction….wow. He has so much more to share and left it all for the end. We wrap up this show with a chat about social media and influencing, how it has changed over the years and seriously lost its way when it comes to construction content.Share and Discussed Linkshttps://www.ccq.orghttps://www.cnesst.gouv.qc.ca/enhttps://www.instagram.com/thesocialclub.design/https://agencesocialclub.comThank you so much Philippe for taking the time to speak with us and sharing your stories and so many career options, we wish you all the best and hope to speak to you soon. #211 Old School Italian Show – 3 wise masons and the 2 young masons taking over from Construction Dosca Inc.

E

This is going to be one for the podcast books, we have 3 of the best masons on the show, Tony, Mario and the OG Ermete and the young men taking over the empire they built, Danny and Mike from Construction Dosca Inc. Sit back, pull out some paper, listen to the three wise Italian masons share their stories in Italian and English, trust us, you will understand the passion, family, love, and drive for the construction industry throughout the show. A massive shout out to Pizzayolo Montreal for providing lunch for everyone, what amazing pizzas, thank you so much. Follow them on IG @pizzayolo.mtl and on TikTok pizzayolo_mtl and their email is [email protected] On with the third show from Montreal. We have the best masons from Montreal on the show and as Tony shares, Dosca walls don’t fall. The talk begins and it begins as far back at the late 60’s when Ermete arrived in Canada and then Tony arrived in the late 70’s followed by Mario in the early 80’s and they just went to work, Ermete was here for 4 days and already found work, Tony worked for free for 6 months so he could learn, the drive and passion behind these men is incredible and as Danny says, Mario is like Rain Man, he knows the dates of everything and he loves prosciutto slices, code for cash money. On this show Ermete pays Mike not one but two compliments and these are the first two compliments that Mike has ever heard come from him, ever, Mike gets a little emotional. The environment that the Dosca Family creates on site is second to none, they make sure they work, they love the work, they are happy, always happy at the end of the hard workday, that’s important to all of them and that happiness is the reason why they have each other’s back. Danny is fully responsible for that happiness these days and Mike throws him flowers for that effort. The group discusses the many and continuous hurdles the CCQ places on hardworking skilled trades and business owners, arrive on a rainy site, you still have to pay the minimum 4-hour rate, starting off with a crew you have to pay the minimum 150 hours regardless if they are good or crap. It’s not right and it needs to change. We discuss every tradesperson exit plan, with the OG’s close to retiring, Danny and Mike must figure out what’s next? They feel they will have to restructure the business, don’t ever end your brand, your business, don’t end it, find a way to hand it off to the next generation. Family is construction, this family loves construction, construction has given this family so many possibilities, construction has added friends into this family, construction is love and the Dosca crew has a lot of love for you if you want to learn how to love this industry. Share and Discussed Linkshttps://ecole-metiers-construction.cssdm.gouv.qc.ca/programme/masonry-bricklaying/https://www.ccq.orgThank you so much to three of the greatest mentors of construction, Ermete, Tony, Mario and to Mike and Danny for making this a reality. #210 Aldev Construction with Pasquale (Pat) the Dad and David the son taking things over for the next 40 years

Welcome to Detour a Montreal – Danny from @dannydosca suggested I come to Montreal and record a few shows, He reached out and had so many wanting to be on the show, 5 were selected and Manny was off to Montreal to get the Quebec Tradespersons perspective.1962 and Pat’s dad is the one that started the construction business for the family, Pat started Aldev Construction in 1997 and now David has been working there for 10 years and he’s 26 years old. We have a lot of great stories to share on this show. Pat opens the conversation gates with CCQ, in my opinion, an outsider looking in, this is basically a mafia, a shakedown, this has nothing to do with construction and everything to do with taking money from hardworking tradespeople. I have an open invitation to anyone from CCQ to come on the show and tell me different. This show is a lot about mentors and having those connections to others that have come before you, who have handled issues on and off site and as Pat expresses it, 50% of the job is figuring it out before you do it, the thinking of the task outweighs any certification you might have, again as Pat shares, show me what your mileage is. It is so true.Pride is huge for us, Pat and David share a few stories about current jobs that are being designed and managed by the sons of people that Pat and his Dad worked for back in the day. They have built these relationships over decades, not years, decades and Pat and David can even go as far as saying they know the buildings even better than the engineers because they have worked on them so many times. Take pride in your business and your skills and understand the seeds that need to be planted today for your business to thrive tomorrow. The group discusses generations and how things were and how they are now and how we need to take the time to teach these new kids, but the new kids need to be willing to learn. All of the Quebec rules and cards and tests and inspectors that add to more problems than solutions. Pat ends the show by answering two great questions from Danny, is he proud of his son? What advice would you give your son for the next 30 years of his career?Shared and Discussed Linkshttps://www.instagram.com/cafeciociaro/?hl=enhttps://www.ccq.orghttps://www.instagram.com/heavenly_taste_biscotti/?hl=enhttps://www.rbq.gouv.qc.ca/en.htmlSam the Semi Automatic Mason https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MVWayhNpHr0Thank you so much David and Pat for being on the show and sharing your construction life. #209 Derek Sousa a Highschool Trade Teacher has a lot to say about teaching the next generation of trades

15 years in the industry with the last 4 being a teacher, Derek wasn’t the best kid in school but in his high school years he found his passion through the woodworking class. Finished school and went right into the union and began working right away. After a few years of doing commercial construction, he got into the carpenters union, followed by the opportunity to work for the school board taking care of things that fall a part or damaged by the students, faculty or age. 4 years ago, he was offered a teaching position by a teacher, the same teacher that taught him who at the time was planning his retirement, Derek never looked back and looks like will be there teaching for a while.Derek has built his teaching on a simple principle, there is knowledge and there is wisdom, the bridge that connects the two is experience. He’s working on making his class more about a preparation for experience into the real construction life. Derek shares some valuable info when it comes to where the resistance is, parents can be difficult when it comes to allowing their children to follow a career in construction, specifically the moms. The number one question asked by students to Derek, which trade makes the most money? At an early age these students are focused on money, it’s a double edge because you really should focus on your passion and the money will follow. The way Derek replies, the trade that works the hardest earns the most, well said. We discuss a few ideas about field trips for the student on active jobs sites, they have tried it but things didn’t go too well, Derek further explains.Of course, we discuss tools, power and hand and Derek has always had great ideas to expand the programs and get more opportunities for the students but everything is pending on school board approval and as he states, it’s about managing pennies. Budgets are tight and that makes things tough for teachers that care, like Derek to continue to add to the course.Derek ends things by educating all of his kids with the 4 key words in construction, how can I help?Shared and Discussed Linkshttps://www.bosshammerco.comhttps://floorplanner.com/loginThank you so much Derek for being on the show and sharing your construction life. #208 Alex Maggiacomo from Universal Aluminium Products is a mom-and-pop shop handling all kinds

Welcome back!!! Nice to have a bit of a break after such an amazing 5 months of pushing the show to new heights and crossing that 500,000-download mark. First show back and we are geared to reach over 300 shows and 1 million downloads this year, stay tuned because it will all happen, and more.On with the first show of 2022.Alex Maggiacomo, manager of Universal Aluminum Products, 41 years in business is on the show and we have a lot to discuss the wonderful world of window, door, trim, soffit, and more and UAP is the mom-and-pop shop that you want to purchase from, if you haven’t already. The show begins by discussing the massive increases in suppliers and materials. It’s not just wood. The talk quickly shifts to regulating the window and door industry into a trained trade but we ultimately discover how can this be possible without BS government intervention. We discuss the “Green” rebates that the government set up, well set up is a loose definition, they approached retailers and asked them to set it all up and it just became a mess.Jason and Alex share installer tips and tricks and how the industry has changed over the decades and why. Construction is shared, way too many colors offered in windows and doors but then you need to match that color for caulking and other trim details, so many options isn’t always the best way to go. We do need training programs to educate trades in all fields but anyone that has been awarded any money from any deals is automatically not allowed to be a part of any training programs, it’s a conflict of interest.Jason and Alex get right into the costs associated with the actual units and install costs and how plenty of clients will play the product only or install only pricing to try to get as low a price as possible, at TCL we disagree with these games. Jason takes over for History and we learn so much about caulking and where it began and who invented it.Alex shares some hard information when it comes to why the supply chains are insane these days, raw aluminum, to glass and how Cardinal glass continues to refuse delivery to Canada. All of this talk brings us to our so-called leaders and how they sold out and shipped out everything we had here and made our nation dependant on Asia and the USA when we could have built a strong and self-sufficient nation. It’s bad out there and only getting worse because we do not have any leadership for the people.Shared and Discussed Linkshttp://sawdac.comhttps://adfastcorp.com/en/insulating-foam/https://todol.com/gun-foam/ipf-foam-2/https://www.hilti.ca/c/CLS_CONSTRCUT_CHEM_7132/CLS_FOAMS_7132https://www.lepagemillwork.com/en-ca/https://macmetalarchitectural.com/en/Thank you so much Alex for joining the show and sharing your mom and pop story. #207 Millennials Choice Group of Companies with Matthew Ablakan - Let’s talk investing your money

In our last show of 2021, we end things with a lot of great information about where to spend your hard-earned money with pre construction condos. Matthew opens the show with a few reasons why tradespeople are the perfect candidate for real estate investing. Matthew takes us back to his humble beginnings, immigrant old school parents, he started working in service jobs and that led him studying 2 degrees in university. During his hustling days and making 25K per year and working and studying every waking hour he had a light bulb moment, make money work for you, he looked at stocks and real estate. At 19 years old he purchased his first 617 square foot preconstruction condo with a payment structure plan he proposed to the builder and it worked. He had 2 years to pay off 60K and it began with 15K part of which was taken from his student loan, and that is how simple and easy it was for Matthew to begin. Be aware of your financial situation, don’t ignore missed payments, address everything, one miss payment raises red flags for lenders and questions what type of person you are, they want to know and don’t let the past dictate who you are, set up automatic payments, pay the balance off, apply for good credit like a line of credit, hit banks all the same morning and apply for the same amount, you may not get all, but you may get half and that right there is enough for you to begin a passive revenue stream. Be aware that lenders will look at your business website, your social media, CRA, the Tax Man will look at your social media to see if what you have been filing lines up with your lifestyle, these are details to be aware of. You can get audited based on your perceived lifestyle on social media. The best time to invest, buy, secure your future was yesterday, the next best day to do the same is today, don’t wait for life to be perfect, you will figure out how to manage. Matthew opens the conversation to Digital Real Estate, NFT’s and Block Chain. Crypto portfolios are a real thing and they will be used as leverage for making actual and digital real estate purchases. Matthew shares some insight into what he has learned and when you understand that A lenders are getting into the crypto business you as an investor should be doing your own homework into it. We continue with the numbers and begin to share the monthly subscriptions, Netflix, Amazon, YouTube Premium, Uber, Uber Eats and more, credit card annual fees and more, assess your expenses and ask yourself some hard questions and you will quickly realize a lot of money is being wasted when it should be invested.Shared and Discussed Linkshttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R4c8eyDwMRYThank you so much Matthew for joining the show and sharing your construction, I look forward to being on your show to continue the conversation. #206 Tyrone Nickel from Nickel General Contracting is on the show, and he has a lot of years to share

I have known Ty for over 11 years, with his Irish background his name comes from the county Tyrone in Ireland. He’s been in construction since 1987, right out of college, always loved working with his hands, went through 2 recessions, shut down his Canadian business in 2004 to move to the USA and work there, he has dual citizenship, so you know he has seen a lot so you don’t want to miss this show. Now Ty began as a summer job with his first business, Deck Masters working in the Toronto downtown core. On his way to becoming a Police officer, life has a way changing course and Ty decided to stay with construction. Ty is hungry, he is driven, he is always on the lookout to help and find work for himself and or for others without any kickbacks. He has 18 jobs on the go right now and he loves it, wouldn’t have it any other way. Ty has always led by example, and he keeps his jobsites all the same, job box, safety stations, note in the bathroom, wipe the seat otherwise you’re gone, he wants a tidy, organized, respectful jobsite for all trades and clients to appreciate. The conversation shifts into all those little things that make you part of the best of GC’s out their vs being a part of the worst GC’s. Keeping your site clean, safe, extra hardhats for clients when they do arrive, there is always someone watching and that someone could be your next potential client, be aware and that will make you profitable. That extra bit of effort may save you from a fine from the local safety inspector, that’s a fact. HGTV comes up, yes that HGTV, back in the early days of the network Ty was on a few shows, we are talking back in 1995 for 3 years and he loved it, he loved the marketing exposure he got from being on the show, I ask him, would you do it again today? Ty says no because the shows are all the same, they offer no value to the industry. Ty shares a lot about next year and bookings and how the year is turning out for him and most, he has a saying, “don’t sweat it if you don’t get it”. One golden rule to remember during the paper process of the any project, if you give anything away for free, acknowledge it on paper, describe it in detail and add a No Charge to that line extra item, let your client know you did that for free. We wrap up the show discussing Ty’s days in commercial work and the many lessons he learned from those years of work.Shared and Discussed Linkshttps://buildertrend.comhttps://www.mississaugahardware.comhttps://www.bmp-group.comhttps://bonestructure.ca/en/http://www.oliverlumber.comThank you so much Ty for joining the show and sharing your construction. #205 Frontiers Design Build building the right construction team

We have a full house on the show today, no less than 8 members of the Frontiers Design Build team, from the 3 owners, James Savoie, Doug Taylor, and Adam Taylor and then we have 5 of their employees, Jeremy Muzzell, Mac Myers, Patt Davis, Jesse Ranch and Graeme Fraser. We have quite the show for you today, we will be discussing the partnership, hiring, project planning, expanding the business, taking things from hardscape and landscape to full builds to high performance building. With 17 employees, the business started with Doug and 3 of his classmates from the University of Guelph. A lot of tradespeople get stuck working in their business and not on their business, with 3 very different owners they can approach the business from a few different vantage points.Everyone shares their thoughts on pricing, figuring out your price, based on scope of work and not square footage, and avoiding the rat race to the bottom just to get the job. The owners have found quarterly company meetings with all 17 employees has really improved the business where they encourage the company to speak up and be a part of the bigger picture. During these meetings they will look at Profit and Loss, different KPI, Key Performance Indicators, then they will wrap up the meetings with what they call Parking Lot issues, current topics and how to streamline them, achieve better from everyone.High Performance building comes up as the team has embraced it and will always try to sell certain details to all of their projects. This show has been a lot about what Frontiers calls Pre Construction Agreement, where it allows the client to commit to the project and allow access to Frontiers to take things to the next stage, Concept, Design and Budget Planning. The owners, James, Doug and Adam have created a business that encourages new hires to step up, learn new skills, and take the business to new heights.Shared and Discussed Linkshttps://www.coconstruct.com@fastidioustileandstonehttps://alliancegator.com/canada/gator-base/https://www.manulift.ca/en/https://www.siga.swiss/ca_enhttps://jeffreyscott.bizThank you so much James, Doug, Adam, Jeremy, Mac, Patt, Jesse and Graemefor joining the show and sharing so much. #204 Mike Belley from Belley Renovations is back to discuss toxic masculinity on the jobsite

In our last show of the 24-hour event we discuss a topic that no construction cares to discuss but this is The Construction Life. As a GC we ae asked to handle so many details, on and off the job site, recognizing what our clients, crews, sub trades, suppliers are going through on a day-to-day basis. Where does this type of behavior come from, where does it begin? We feel it begins and comes from competition; competitive behavior breeds this type of environment. Construction is 100% about communication and you will get a lot of tradespeople telling employers “I know how to do that” it forms a disconnect and can create bigger issues. What is toxic masculinity? Mike brings up a great point, it’s like asking what color is the rainbow? There are so many colors and so many ways to describe it. How should GC’s and other tradespeople handle these toxic situations, when they see that a tradesperson is uncomfortable, it is really about the most against the least on site? Toxic Masculinity is a majority thing and how should we handle it and possibly change it for future tradespeople. We even discuss the toxic environment that clients, designers and architects create for tradespeople and how we are almost as much to blame as the people lashing out at us, we place ourselves in these situations and we allow people to speak down to us. The construction industry, the clients we work for do not allow for a work life balance, mental health, physical issues, they simply do not care to move the industry to where other industries are already at. Our traits are left in the past and we must so called “Man up”. The only way to get through to other tradespeople is to show our own vulnerability. We even discuss mental health being a service charge on projects and even having WSIB cover mental health, we know neither will happen until we speak up as a collective. Let’s make this conversation something that all tradespeople are not afraid to discuss.Thank you so much Mike for joining the show and sharing, this was not an easy conversation to have but an important one. #203 Jesse Barbosa is back to discuss what’s been going on with the growth of his framing business

E

Jesse has now joined the 3rd guest show appearance club and we couldn’t be happier as we have watched him grow his business over the course of our show. Welcome back Jesse, on with the show.Jesse gets Manny and Carlito to join in for the opening track and it’s great. Where do we begin with this show, it’s 6am and we are down to the last 3 shows of the event, the sun is starting to rise and Carlito and Manny are back with some energy. Jesse begins with a major foundation fuck up, funny enough it was an ICF pour, and boy was it out of common sense, 6 ½” out of square. Missing key point load rebar and their fix was to use PL 400 instead of the engineer fix of epoxy and the hits on this first-time builder and first-time client gets worse. It ended with Jesse firing the foundation crew because “the way they fix mistakes is by negotiations”.Shifting gears to hiring and firing and Jesse now has 7 framers and he’s always on the hunt for better, skilled framers to work with. No matter how good you might think you are, if you have a shitty attitude, not a team player, you won’t survive on this crew or in this business. Jesse treats his business as a democracy and it’s what has built his business up very nicely.Jesse shares his ups and downs with machinery and why he heeds them to make his business run well. Jesse shares his thoughts on signing his contracts and how projects are getting bigger and more complex but also poorly organized and once Jesse agrees to a start date, GC’s can’t push these dates months ahead. It really is about control of as many elements so then you can deliver what you promised. We wrap up the show with some chat about pre fab and modular framing and building and where the future of framing is heading. In 18 months, Jesse and his team have come a long way and he credits the Building Passive project as the project that shifted his business in a new direction. Flo from Pro Custom Painting recommending Jesse was a beautiful thank you to Jesse. Working with Jim Caruk turned into 3 projects and many more to come. Jesse has just positioned his business a certain way, he has learned, he continues to share, he encourages new and old trades to contribute and work together to build the best possible homes. At TCL we are very proud of Jesse and his crew.Shared and Discussed Links@procustompainting@buildingpassivehttps://hummingbirdhillhomes.comhttps://www.mississaugahardware.comhttps://www.paramountnetwork.com/shows/yellowstoneThank you so much Jesse for joining the show and sharing your construction stories and you have a massive career ahead of you. #202 WELCOME BACK CrewMenGroup Taha has a lot more to share on the show – hold onto your tool belt

E

Taha (T) is back and gearing to go 3am in the morning and it all begins with where he left off the last time, a 400K fuck up. Sit back and enjoy the many lessons T has to share on this show and we appreciate him being a part of our craziness. Back to the 400K involving a union roof job that certain things didn’t get done and then T and his crew were asked to make holes in the roof for the anchoring points, but the next trade decided to go home and not do the work. Lesson learned and big ups to everyone for keeping their cool throughout the entire process. T moves on to some more current projects and a recent excavation job and how quickly he and his team made it happen. Then from there he was clear across the core and back on another job and another and another, the construction life does not stop for the Crew Men Group. T shares his construction bone regarding how he handles racism from neighbors attacking him and his team, he handles it properly. We all have families to feed. We all bleed red, powerful words from Taha, thank you brother. We have a very in-depth conversation about money, about the future of construction, about your destiny, T really lays things out and makes you think where and when will my next step be, thanks brother for stirring the pot. Carlito and T have a conversation about hiring crack heads, never judge a book by its cover. T shares a story about a group of men that he found living in a shed for a project that was scheduled to be demoed and things get interesting that morning. Negative energy attracts negative energy, there is never a reason to feed negative energy with more negative energy, treat everyone the same way, no matter if you as a tradesperson is verbally attacked for doing your scope of work. Thank you Taha for sharing such a powerful message. FUCK MONEY and find the real riches in your life, don’t chase the money, chase the happiness.Shared and Discussed Linkshttps://sandcustomhome.webs.comThank you so much Taha and the entire crew for the information, educating us and our listeners on loving what you do for a living, proud, ambitious, hungry and not for the money and so funny and real, Thank you. #201 Adrian Schwantz from C.R.C Contracting Inc is here to discuss ICF and more of his construction life

E

One O’clock in the morning and Manny and Carlito are still at it and thanks so much for Adrian for making the trek for such a late night or early morning show, much appreciated. Adrian began his career with ICF at the young age of 14 years old, learned so much with the right builder, then decided to get his mechanic ticket, hated it and got right back into building homes and the rest is history and will be shared on this show. Adrian has worked with and used every type of ICF block, and his preference is Amvic for several reasons. This show is full of information and might feel a bit slow but trust us, it’s worth listening to the entire show as things pick up quick a third into the show.Adrian walks the listeners through all the key steps associated to installing ICF and the rebar inside. ICF has increased so much during the pandemic, it is now cheaper to build with ICF than traditional lumber. Adrian dives deep into the numbers behind ICF and it’s well worth factoring in this new and old way of building. We discuss the many options of exterior cladding, pretty much anything you want can be used on the exterior as your finish cladding.Of course, we discuss a Construction Bone To Pick with Adrian and he discusses the old timers refusing to embrace ICF and he has two words for them all, first word begins with an F and second word ends with an F. Adrian has been a part of a project that went 18 floors in ICF, very interesting story. Adrian discusses the importance of actual on site experience and no matter how many YouTube videos about ICF you watch will never teach you real on site experience.Shared and Discussed Linkshttps://www.amvicsystem.comhttps://www.nudura.com/products/https://logixicf.comhttps://www.foxblocks.com/productshttps://www.quadlock.comhttps://integraspec.comhttps://www.insuldeck.comhttps://www.advancedcoatings.on.caWhat an amazing show thank you so much Adrian for being a part of the show and sharing so much insight into the business. #200 Significant Others and what we as tradespeople put our loved ones through every single day.

E

This has been an idea for a show since our very first show and here we are 200 shows later and we finally get to record a show about our significant others and what tradespeople put our loved ones through every single day of The Construction Life. We have Carlito, his wife couldn’t make it, Jason from The Keystone Contractor is back with his wife Laura and Manny and his girlfriend Bela are here to chat the other half of the business. This should be interesting. The men speak up and accept what they do, the women share the ups and downs, but words can only go so far, action will take us further. For all you young tradespeople just starting out this is a show worth listening too, the men on this show might not be right but a lot of what is being shared is the truth and there are some suggestions in between the words. Tradespeople need to understand how and when to say no, it’s never about get as much work as possible, gobble up all of it and just find the time to do it, the answer is no. Learn to say no so you can have your personal time, family time, significant other time, these are important. Carltio and Jason share a lot about their long-term marriages and the ups and downs while Manny asks the questions and pokes the relationship bear to get to the route of the issues. Of course, the Electric Space Shuttle makes an appearance on this show and the leads to an injury from a possible materbating incident. That’s right this is The Construction Life. What an amazing show thank you so much Jason, Laura and Bela for being a part of the very personal and difficult show but a show that needed to be heard.Find Carlito @theconstructionliferenos and reach out to him at [email protected] to reach out to Manny, text him on his mobile, 416 433-5737 and or email him at [email protected] or [email protected] Please let him know who you are and then ask away. #199 Danny Dosca is BACK for more TCL talk and this round we will talk about the future of tradespeople, young and old.

E

“Tough times create strong men. Strong men create easy times. Easy times create weak men. Weak men create tough times.” The quote, from a postapocalyptic novel by the author G. Michael Hopf, sums up a stunningly pervasive cyclical vision of history. That is what this show will be about. Plenty of older tradespeople are nervous of the future of construction including the 3 on today’s show. Danny sparks the conversation about what will happen when the older generation of tradespeople decide to put the hardhat down for good. It all begins with a certain type of work ethic and Danny, Manny and Carlito agree that work ethic is quickly disappearing from the jobsite, and we need to figure out how to bring it back and bring it back hard. We discuss modular, automated workforces, panels of brick not individual bricks, what does the future really have in store for construction? These questions must be asked, and solutions must be offered. Are we raising a generation of way too sensitive people, nobody wants to go to the school of Hard Knox, you can’t yell at anyone, you can be arrested for words and actions that upset others, the entire world has gone to bullshit. The comparison to government contracts and government ways of building and the amount of waste that is there and being taught to every generation. We are not saying that today’s generation, the workforce is to fully blame here, anyone who doesn’t care to work hard is to blame, anyone that wants to do as little to be paid as much is to blame and things are not getting better. Do we need to reopen the immigration gates and bring the people that want to work and work hard to make a living and have a better life in Canada, will that be the solution to the shortage in tradespeople? Who is really to blame for removing the hard work ethic previous generations had? Do we blame parents, government, teachers? We have an interesting chat about who is the easiest and hardest trade out there, might just piss off a few trades listening, keep in mind Carlito and Manny were on 16 hours at this point. How long will it take to replace the old school trades, to find those new trades, navigate the new world we live in and have them find their passion to be in construction. Carlito makes one last suggestion where to find more tradespeople, prison, he thinks that’s a great idea in this new sensitive world. What an amazing show thank you so much Danny for spending the weekend in Toronto again, next time we see you, we will have the whole family on the show and it will be in Montreal. Thank you for sharing so much about big your journey and educating our listeners on what it is to have a construction family. #198 Kurt Snell of Snell Contracting Services Inc talking his young construction life and young trades

With today’s show we cast a wide construction net, but Kurt wants to focus on young trades, young business owners, the youth of construction, as the older trades prepare to step down, where is the industry going to be in the next decade, a particular favorite topic at TCL. Strap on the tool belt, this will be one hell of a great show. The show begins with Kurt’s experience with George Brown and how it was a huge positive step in his career path, sharing the teachers, the classroom sizing and fundamentals of construction being learned. Kurt has a lot of positive things to say about the school route and he knew when it was his time to decide, either start in the industry or begin with school, he chooses school for a very good reason. Kurt has never been that old type of tradesperson, where you yell, you “man up” kind of mentality and when he was given certain great opportunities by established builders, he did ask that he work in new ways and that worked out amazing for him and the crews and especially for the clients. We ask Kurt how have the clients changed in the last 15 years of his construction, his response is great and he touches on a number of key factors. Kurt has some great ideas and he’s not afraid to share them on our show and the reasons behind those ideas because they stem from him learning every single day on the job site. One idea in particular is known as a Trades Day, he brings the trades into the job before it begins to meet the clients and walk through the scope so the clients can now feel better and more secure with the strangers entering their home and spending their hard-earned money. We wrap up the show with numbers, how and why Kurt came up with his rates, his overhead, his figures and he turned to people he trusted for guidance, and it has worked out great for him. What a great show we have with Quaid Sturdy from Sturdy Contracting Co. and he’s going to share what he’s been doing being so young in Trades and why he sees such an optimistic future in construction. At 24 years old Quaid is very interested in meeting, speaking, absorbing from as many tradespeople as possible. Then we are pleasantly interrupted by Jeff from @gl.plumbing who stopped by to say hello. #195 Tyler Stott from Stott HVAC is back to talk loads more heat loss calculations and advancing your business

Welcome to the wonderful world of HVAC, Tyler is back to discuss his business, the HVAC business and more. Working for an established HVAC brand Tyler was making suggestions on where to take the business how to grow with the times and his ideas, the powers at be didn’t want to go in that direction so after many ups and downs and Tyler watching his sales go up but revenue go down, Tyler decided to take the leap and go on his own. He partnered with someone, plus a helper, one van they were off into the HVAC market. 5 years later and the partner has decided to move on, Tyler has 5 vans now, the crews, specialty techs and he has built a solid construction business, his former employer and business closed 2 years ago.We get right into the world of HVAC and Tyler begins with a Construction Bone, construction heat, GC’s using a brand-new furnace to heat and or cool the home, in turn placing wear and tear on a new machine and potentially damaging the unit, a few great suggestions are brought up. The world of maintenance comes up and no point in spending the bucks and getting the proper system if you as a homeowner won’t handle the maintaining or hire someone like Stott to take care of all that seasonal maintenance. Tyler shares his ideal ultimate mechanical room and what would be in there servicing the entire home, from a boiler, snow melt, forced air for AC and air movement to a steam humidifier. With an ideal humidity level between 30-50%. HVAC designs, Mechanical Engineers, calculating loads, hot and cold, Tyler brings up a major point about OBC standard loads and how they don’t work for clients’ needs and expectations. We get talking about 2nd furnaces and zoning but instead of zoning horizontally with basement and main floor and then 2nd zone will be 2nd floor, go vertically and zone the home front and back because of the position of the home and natural sunlight and radiant temps affecting the home comfort. #194 Mental Health and Tradespeople with Taylor Pagniello from Rise Psychotherapy

This is one show Carlito and Manny have wanted to do since the very beginning. We are going to upset some, we are going to bring up some issues that most don’t discuss, we will discuss addictions, anxiety, suicide, depression and more. This show might not be for everyobe but it’s a conversation we must have and at TCL we will never hide from speaking the truth.Taylor is here to discuss mental health on the jobsite and how to handle yourself, your trades and the construction industry. She is a Registered Psychotherapy Qualifying with 3 years in the industry. Carlito brings up that a lot of tradespeople bring personal, home, family life to the job site and it can spill over and create a negative job site environment. The old school way of handling any issues was to ignore, deny, not speak about it, gone are those days, it’s really not about seeing a therapist, begin with speaking to someone in your circle, have an open and honest conversation about what’s really going on in your life.It is important to validate and reflecting what a tradesperson might say to you a co worker, or you the employer, it might be easy to disarm it with humor but not always the best course of action. It is difficult for a lot of tradespeople to share and speak up. We discuss the wonderful fake world of social media and possibly consider reducing the amount of ultra fake accounts that present fake lifestyles and begin the process of not comparing oneself to fakeness.Tradespeople should consider self care, focus on decompressing after a long day, relax at home, get exercising, studies have shown that getting active can have a better result then some medications. We discuss addictions and the reasons behind them beginning with work being its own addiction and staying away from your personal lives and possible problems. We wrap up the show discussing working with women in the industry.Shared and Discussed Linkshttps://www.healthline.com/health/touch-therapy#potential-usesCheck outhttps://www.juspress.ca@jusspresssDanny is the one gentleman that turned me onto natural juices and the many benefits behind them, I began with raw ginger and kept going from there. #192 Alonso from Clueless Framer and Kase from Alchemist Carpenter 2 framers from different perspectives

E

We have Alonso from Casa Nueva Contracting Inc and Kase from Alchemist Carpentry discussing framing, union, non union and all kinds of framing. Alonso is a George Brown graduate, would he do it the same way? He says no, he says he would have gone the appprentice route and jumped into framing. He's been framing for 8 years now. Then with Kase he is no longer a part of the union and working the custom homes. With a background in hospitality then school for animation then fell into carpentry and joined the union, didn’t like the apprenticeship route, stopped paying his dues and went solo. It’s an interesting dynamic between these two. The conversation of who’s better? Union or non union?Alonso discusses a workplace injury during framing a roof, he was fine from it, or he thought he was, a car collision soon after really caused the damage. We discuss the workforce and the truth is still there, the younger trades are asking for far more then they are worth and once the assessment is done and the employer sets the rate below their expectations, they leave. The conversation of 4 day weeks comes up again and the guys share a few thoughts on that, in the end every tradesperson has to find the work life balance and find the time to work and spend with your family.Establish your business, understand you need to hire others to help you run and prepare your business for the future, that requires accountants, bookeepers, lawyers and more, just understand all of this prep will pay off so much in the end.Shared and Discussed LinksAphantasia is the inability to voluntarily create a mental picture in your head. #190 Marc Fraser from Craigmhor Construction is here to discuss all kinds of numbers associated with tradespeople

E

Marc was having a conversation with Manny and 5 mins in, this show idea came up, we have to share this. Marc recently had a Zoom call with our Minister of Labour and he’s going to share that talk. We are going to talk about getting into trades and why teenagers should consider consruction as a career, we are going to talk about wages and rates, running your business, working for someone, we are going to compares construction to other career options, we are going to talk about Guidance Counselors and what they are doing wrong, we are going to talk about parents and what they are doing wrong, we are going to talk about how much money you can make, how much you can loose, we are not going to sugar coat anything on this show, you don’t want to miss this one.We discuss the whole influencer career choice and what’s really involved behind all that and how it’s not a viable option for real tradespeople. Half way through the show Marc walks everyone through the wage numbers, what your student debt will be, what your starting trade wage will be, where you as a trade will be 10 years into the game, these numbers will open your eyes. We discuss the bell curve and how the industry is top heavy right now but that’s going to dramatically change in the next 5 years, over 20% + of the workforce is leaving the industry and it's not being replenished by the new generation.Towards the end of the show Manny and Carlito share a rant of reality when it comes to clients, our rates and our worth. If you stay in the construction business long enough you will come across an asshole client that could potentially destroy your business, your livelihood, and you, all in the name of telling the contractor “go fuck yourself”. Yes we understand the construction industry is an amazing career choice but here at TCL we want to share the whole truth, why? #189 Stu from Brollyrenos, Justin from JMP Carpentry, Jason the Keystone Contractor discussing old and new schools of construction

E

We stir the pot and begin the show discussing rates and how trades should be working towards billing $1000.00 per day, once that has been stirred we hear from Stu and Justin and how they got started, interesting stories as Stu if 50 and Justin is 26. Stu does share the way the UK handles aprrenticeships versus how it is handled here in Canada. It’s refreshing to hear from the 3 different perspectives of a seasoned tradesperson like Jason, an immigrant who built a successful business like Stu and the next generation working their way through the life like Justin.Stu says over here we work harder, way too hard for his liking, he feels back home they work smarter, it’s true. A great conversation comes up about trades sharing advice to each other, asking for help from others, building a network of like minded tradespeople to better the whole industry. The John Cox Cottage was built in 1807 as part of History with Manny. The overall theme of the podcast is numbers, what are value is, what we are booking, how to price custom scope, how to communicate those numbers with clients, the group shares more than a few thoughts. The conversation of mentors comes up and how valuable having a resource for all tradespeople to reach out to help build a better construction business and industry. Justin shares his thoughts and the older trades share their knowledge. We wrap the show with some great tips for anyone in construction, don’t use “work” as a swear word, don’t bullshit, everyone can see the BS, don’t think any task is beneath you, learn and share and repeat, that’s The Construction Life. Sit back and enjoy this special show where we will be discussing family, old school, new school, all kinds of bricklaying, building in Montreal, more family, food, history and more, Danny has a lot to share and of course, we will upset a few, it’s The Construction Life.Danny begins his journey almost 40 years ago when his Dad immigrated to Canada, the family followed, sisters married two brothers and they became a crew of hardworking old school bricklayers and they always helped each other out and that is how the business started. With any successful business Danny shares his thoughts on the team his dad built, the team Danny is building, what to do when the older trades are ready to retire and how to train and seek out the younger trades to continue the quality. Danny continues discussing trends, coloured mortar, suppliers, and clients’ expectations.Danny enlightens the listeners about the CCQ, the link is below, it is basically a legal mafia, yes, I might get into trouble, but the CCQ is ridiculous, it’s a shake down to take money out of hardworking tradespeople no matter if you are even working on your personal home. The guys discuss old vs new school and how Danny’s dad feels jobs are taking longer because of the younger trades and having to be careful on how you speak to the younger more sensitive generation. #185 Michael Ferreira from Rose Gold Homes & Design a custom builder in his twenties

E

Carlito is back on the mic, it’s been over a year since he was last heard on the show, nice to have him back and sharing so much about The Construction Life. Carlito will be on future shows, and he will be part of an event happening in November, stay tuned to learn more.On with the show, Michael from Rose Gold Homes & Design, 29 years old, a custom home builder since he was 22. He set out a plan to make his business a successful brand and it’s working. We open the show discussing delays, schedules and covid, Michael still tries to keep everything on schedule and he’s booking material months in advance, we must. Michael does have that thought, he thinks some clients might be thinking, what’s this kid think he’s doing building custom homes at 23 years old? It’s never been brought up and it has never discouraged Michael from building and building a brand.Interesting that Michael has an older crew, older than himself, his youngest would be the electrician at 33 years old, while the rest of the trades are 40 and up, he’s having a hard time finding younger trades with the skills his clients are asking for. Michael is using a headhunting service to find more trades for his projects. He wants to expand and continue to grow but he needs the trades to do so. Once day he would love to renovate a resort home somewhere very warm. The show format is back along with Carlito, we have Construction Bone To Pick, History with Manny, OBC Talk and Green Book with Carlito.Carlito and Manny get right back into opinions shared about HGTV since Michael brings up the fact that he was asked to be on a show, Manny offers up a few of his thoughts. We discuss the possibility of 4-day weeks and having 3-day weekends and the conversation becomes very interesting. The guys discuss side hustles, helping with employees with side hustles, its important that all employees and employers have the conversations and make it work with both sides, no need to keep it a secret and let the GC have a bad day because the employee called in sick to handle a side hustle.Towards the end of the show, we hammer some great talk over Tarion, home warranties, Houzz, and HGTV makes another visit with a 5-gallon pail of something.Shared and Discussed Linkshttp://www.jenanasser.comhttps://artisticskylight.comhttps://www.everlastproducts.caWhat an amazing show thank you so much Michael and thank you for sharing so much about big your journey and educating our listeners. E

Thank you Mat for being on the show and opening the show with a little ACDC. Mat works for a large rental corporation and due to some legal logistics, we must keep the name out of the show. There are times where I want to interview certain big-name brands, but it’s takes months if not years to get approvals and instead of waiting and jumping through hoops, we record a show and still share valuable information. We also discuss a bunch of other construction details on this show, such as working in Norway, where Mat is from and we get it all sorts of other topics during the show, we let the conversation go where it goes.Mat share a lot about building in Norway and other European countries and we compare to North American building. We discuss techniques on both sides of the pond and why we feel over here we don’t try to step up our game and embrace new ideas from others around the world. We even discuss what is truly happening with the younger generation and why today it’s so different for that segment of the population, when speaking about driving habits on the roadway…Please Please for the love understand the left lane is the passing lane, no matter what speed you are driving, move to the right and make the flow of traffic move, not brake.Mat shares different machinery, do’s and don’ts, maintenance, pick up and drop offs, repairs and more. #183 James Malinowski from JM Insul on the show to talk insulation and so much more

We have a great show, talking about insulation, all types of insulation, batts, cellulose, closed cell, open cell and sound proofing. James walks us through his first year running his own business and the last 9 years working with his dad who has been insulating for 35 plus years, how the batts have changed. James discusses different types of insulations and applications, and he knows his building code. We go from old 2x4 walls of the 80’s and 90’s to R24 of today to spray foam, proper spray foam and attic insulating. There is a lot of skill and building code understanding when it comes to proper insulating, it’s not as easy as others might think and always remember, a good insulator has a good grasp on building code because as James mentions, they are the last trade before things get covered up, that means inspectors will take longer to assess. We have a great conversation about crews, where to work, how far to travel, why is there so much work outside of the core and the standards that James has built his business on. #182 Woodcraft Furniture with Oliver Kremeris and the OG Mark Mager

What an amazing show we have today, we are going to talk about solid wood furniture making with Oliver the current Business Manager and owner and Mark the original owner who recently retired and has passed on the business over to the digital age. Sit back and enjoy what these gentlemen have to share because Woodcraft began by someone who really didn’t know about furniture making but he had a passion for it, then it was passed onto another person who also didn’t have the skills for furniture design and making but had a passion for it. Mark was lucky to have a neighbor who taught at York University and Mark was invited into the shop and that eventually led to working on children’s climbers. One day Mark’s neighbor decided to leave on a trip and left Mark the barn and shop, that led to an opportunity to build an executive desk for a high-profile TD Bank employee and that was the beginning. Mark and Oliver have learned over the years and have adapted to the industry designing and building pieces that people truly love and want. They have had orders to reproduce Putin’s desk, with all the gold leaf, they ship orders all over the world with custom made packaging for every piece. These products are solid wood, so many different types of species and they offer 16 different types of stains, pretty much the creative gates are wide open, and they will design and build what you want, perfectly. They offer a white glove service when it comes to installs, if that’s local here in the GTA or abroad where they will outsource the right service people to finalize the purchase. Woodcraft has built a strong family driven business and it carries on that way nearly 50 years later. #181 Ontario RediMix Concrete with Marco Carlini - The Supplier side of the concrete business

10 years in the business currently working as Supervisor Sales of Operations, Marco actually went to school, worked at a bank, that didn’t last and went right back into construction, specifically concrete where his uncles taught him so much, he has concrete in his blood so a year into the banking industry he was back to learning the ropes, being yelled at, understanding different mixes, scheduling and so much more, in no time he was part of the concrete family. With 5 plants and over 100 trucks ready to go in the greater Toronto area, ORM has your next pour ready to go. With so many factors when it comes to the time the trucks load up, travel to site, to pouring and then back to the plant for another batch, there is so many fast-moving parts to this industry. Heat charges in the winter, ice bags for the hot summer, lab testing, site testing, there is so much that goes on before, during and after concrete is a part of your project. Concrete is the 2nd most consumable product right behind water, believe that it is true. Marco brings up Superplasticizers (SP's), also known as high range water reducers, are additives used in making high strength concrete. Plasticizers are chemical compounds that enable the production of concrete with approximately 15% less water content. Superplasticizers allow reduction in water content by 30% or more. Marco discusses some new things that are going on in the concrete industry beginning with Carbon Capture, what and interesting chat. #180 Caledon Timber Frames with Roland Skuce – Post and Beam old school framing

Roland Skuce and Dan Ray partners in Caledon Timber Frames for nearly a decade with 5 employees and still growing. They have known each other since grade 2, worked as stick framers for Roland’s Dad, a custom builder, and his dad was a plumber so the guys were familiar with the trades. They both attended Fanshawe College and studied Construction Engineering, with a focus in Carpentry Techniques, from there they took an intense 3-month timber framing course at College of the Rockies and all this education started the process to build Caledon Timber Frames. The timber comes from BC and Oregon, it arrives all 4 sides dressed and very green, no kiln drying for these pieces of lumber, and they are very square and ready for shaping. Timber framing gets secured to traditional poured or block or slab on grade foundation, anchored to load and brought down to the footings but the first floor is usually TJI joists. From checking and cracking to sealing Roland walks the listeners through the entire process of a timber frame and the size they can make it. Roland walks the listeners through all the power and hand tools and the reasons behind them all. Quite the investment when working with material as thick as 11.5”. These tools assist with the skilled tradesperson to achieve a tolerance of a 32nd of an inch, those joints will be tight. Roland shares little details on preparing the timber for finishing materials such as drywall, flooring, paneling and more depending on the client. We discuss the future and there are some companies that are offering CNC timber framing, is it the same? Not sure. I feel you lose a lot of the hand skills by going the CNC route. Roland shares working with other species of wood such as cedar and oak, with oak being used quite a lot in the UK. #179 Scott Westlake from the Westlake Team is here to discuss mortgages, all kinds of lending options

Scott is a mortgage broker and entrepreneur; he has a lot to share regarding the misunderstood industry of lending. We begin the show discussing building business relationships the old school way, a phone call, a meeting, speaking in person and getting a better understanding of the client’s needs. Scott is here to discuss how to finance a recreational property, a cottage, a piece of land, construction, development, luxury real estate, and more, his team loves the challenge, and they will make it happen for you. With 4 main business verticals, residential, alternative, private capital and commercial, these key niche details are what sets The Westlake Team apart from others. Scott has been one to get a better understanding of clients’ needs years from now, what’s the uncertainty going to possibly look and plan for that renewal, renewals are a great opportunity to save more money, the lack of liquidity and lack of savings is a conversation that must happen and happen early.I ask Scott about the younger buyer, the 25-year old’s and he discusses how he doesn’t look at age, he looks at maturity and how he can help them achieve their goals. Business for self is the trickiest demographic for lending purposes but there are ways to make a self-employed tradesperson look great on paper, Scott shares a few thoughts on the programs that allow you to file minimum income and still qualify for mortgages, it really is about how to present yourself, if not, it could be declined.Scott is open and honest about how to position yourself for an approval and having good credit is top, don’t be afraid to pull your credit report and find out what it is like, because they will find out regardless. Organization is key and most tradespeople are not the best at organizing so connect the person who organizes your business and personal paperwork with Scott, connect him to your partner, your son or daughter, your accountant, no matter but the connection is key to get you the best options on the table. What an amazing show thank you so much Scott for sharing so much mortgage honesty on the show and revealing the whole truth about lending, educating our listeners. #178 It’s the Electrical show with Andrew from Azores Construction & Electrical and Jalen Lam

E

We have quite the show today, Andrew Padre Cura and Jalen Lam will be sharing the whole electrical truth, trades, and the industry, might want to buckle in for this one. Two Conestoga graduates under the Electrical Technician Program, nothing but praise about the school. Andrew opens the show with an interesting story with every perfect storm possible, wiring mistakes, ministry of labour arriving on site, unsafe work site and no PPE.5 mins early, makes you 10 mins late, arrive on site and ready to go on time, all the time. The guys discuss their career paths and how it always starts with subdivision and high rise and how nobody cares because it’s gets it done fast, not right mentality, aka “running shoe electrics” leading to a racoon being stuck inside the wall cavity. Andrew shares a few stories that will make your stomach twists, use caution when hearing this part of the show.We discuss the rates and how covid has now made rates higher on all levels and rightfully so. Andrew and Jalen share more than a few safety stories and how things really are, not for the faint at heart. We need to lighten up the show as all this reality check takes a toll, so I ask the guys, are you the guys hanging all the light fixtures at home and for friends and family? We discuss schooling, on site, expectations, and even debating going all the way to get your master license and the stigma attached. Andrew shares an interesting story about HGTV and one of their current renoactors, must listen and when you do and we don’t divulge which one it was, but I already knew, reach out and I will share the name. The guys wrap up the show with some great pieces of advice for any new trades coming up and it all starts with listening and ask questions. #177 Work Wear with the ultimate shop Work N Wear for all your work and safety wear needs

Aadil from WorknWear is on the show today, since 1975 they have been outfitting tradespeople and more with the proper work wear, safety wear, fire rated wear, long underwear, and more. I have a huge amount of respect for Aadil and his staff and how they treat everyone that enters the shop, buys online, the same way, with respect because Aadil knows you work hard as a tradesperson. Aadil shares his insight on which products and why are they good for your specific trade and application, he has no loyalty to one brand or another, he listens to the tradesperson and makes his suggestion. We discuss all types of work wear, washing work wear, fire safe work wear and insoles for your footwear, great tips are shared here. Watch for @stotthavcsystems as they shop at his store all the time, AKA the HVAC Ninjas when they are wearing all Snickers, all black. Tradespeople need to understand spending money on the proper work wear makes sense, as a tradesperson, you are in these clothes, wearing these boots, for 8-10 hours a day, stop telling yourself, “It’s just work wear” it’s more than work wear. Your work wear makes you money, if you are not comfortable you can’t work to your full potential. We discuss being a small business during these difficult pandemic times and how expenses have gone up but most Mom and Pop shops can’t raise their prices. We wrap up the show discussing, are tradespeople getting bigger? #176 Chris Clarry from Hardwork Canada is on the show talking High Rise maintenance and more.

Today’s show is all about high rise maintenance with Chris Clarry of Hardwork Canada, Chris goes where most of us will never, fixing things that should never have failed, but they do because erecting high-rise structures is all about how fast, not how good. Chris is truly a forensic contractor, sourcing out why buildings are failing, assessing things, and then making the proper repairs one time.Coming from a troubled youth and even getting into drugs, Chris was able to pull himself out that world with the help of key people. After his treatment it was construction that saved his life, renting a place with a landlord that worked in high-rise, he showed Chris how to lay brick, operate a zoom boom, and Chris’s construction career began. Working with engineers as they create a binder and scope of work and specs to make the repair and sometimes, he must do it all on his own based on the property maintenance budget, Chris enjoys the problem solving.Chris discusses crack repairs, membrane applications, concrete surface preparation and more, there are so many key steps during the entire process, he shares a great trade tip to discover if there are any voids in the concrete, a must listen for sure. Chris shares his insights on the job site safety with the gear and traveling to the top of buildings and work at the top of buildings even shares a story about a neighboring crane that collided with a swing stage causing some major issues on the building Chris was working on.As a side hustle Chris has been doing a lot of research into blockchain and crypto currency and I asked him to share some info on it. We don’t dive too deep into it but we do discuss some talking points and this topic is something I would like to revisit on a future show.Shared and Discussed linkshttps://renascent.cahttp://edisonengineers.cahttps://www.tremcosealants.com/fileshare/literature/PUMA_Technology_Brochure.pdfhttps://poocoin.appWhat an amazing show full of truthful insight, I thank you so much Chris for sharing so much on your trade, high rise, construction and more, educating our listeners on everything to do with your version of the construction life. #175 Motivating Educating and Empowering Tradespeople with Dimitri from Pure Motivation Fitness

E

Coming from a broken home with a single mom raising him and his brother, life was hard for his family and when he found fitness it became his escape. Training begins with body types, which of the 3 are you? Ectomorph, Mesomorph, Endomorph, focus on your body type to begin with. At 21 with the help of his wrestling coach, Dimitri was able to compete in his first show and he won. From there he worked in fitness clubs, good and bad ones, mostly bad ones, he saw where they could improve and how to improve. With the guidance of a mentor, Dimitri left the corporate life, and he took a chance and went on his own and built Pure Motivation Fitness, that was 15 years ago.Dimitri discusses customizing your fitness goals to your body type and truly understand why he is going to suggest eating habits, exercise techniques, weight training to suit your body. Dimitri wants to be your coach; everyone needs a coach to make sure you are held accountable to your health and fitness goals. 3 Key principles, Mindset, Training and Nutrition last.Dimitri isn’t here to preach, he’s here to help you change your life for the better, loosing body fat adds years of extra life. It’s simply about taking bad habits and placing good habits in front of it, that is how you slowly change your day-to-day events, such as smoking. Accept, Acknowledge and Advance, 3 counts of accountability. Tim Lyons once taught Dimitri, “embrace the suck” Covid happened, and he had to embrace the suck to get over it.Dimitri shares some great insight into the medical industry and how to handle your doctor, your injuries, and avoiding pharmaceutical assistance. Here in Canada, we have the right to ask for a 2nd or 3rd and we have the right to ask for ultrasounds, x-rays and MRI’s, we need to see what the problem is so we can figure out the best course of action because a pill may not always be best option for you. Dimitri pulls out the calculator and shows you how you can calculate the potential to have a heart attack or stroke based on your current state of resting heart rate, this will open you eyes wide. #174 GL Plumbing with Jeff DiGiantommaso Canadian Italian Master Plumber with a lot pride and love for construction

E

Jeff from GL Plumbing is on the show today, commercial and residential master plumber. He understands his Italian surname but always questioned his first name, his mom wanted him to blend in, but he stands out, he’s one of the best plumbers in the industry and today he will share a lot of love for the industry, the trade, the people he works with and for. Hold on, this will be an amazing podcast and listen up all you younger trades looking for an opportunity.Jeff began his plumbing career the old fashion old school Italian way, his Tile Setter Dad knew a guy that needed an apprentice, with Jeff it was either plumbing or electrical, he went with plumbing, they work harder than sparky’s…lol. Jeff began in high rise with copper, copper as large as 6” where you need two torches to get that pipe cherry red hot. The one thing that drove Jeff to leave high rise, was the repetitive scope of work, to the point that guys became their tasks, bathtub jeff, or finishing Tony…lol. Jeff shares a few interesting details regarding hospital plumbing, great info shared here.Jeff shares one of his major Bone To Pick and we can all relate. The conversation continues with running a business during Covid, his workforce, his clients, and his sub-contractors which leads to hiring new employees, how hard it is to find any kind of trade, how these job search websites don’t work just like the people using the service, these and they are mostly millennials don’t care about learning, they care about money and being paid top dollar for min amount of work. Nobody will hire that kind of attitude. We do discuss the vaccine and clients are now asking that all tradespeople entering their home, mostly commercial spaces are asking for proof. On top of trying to run a business, hiring tradespeople that only care about themselves, we as construction business owner and operators must now add one more hurdle into the mix. It is causing more unwanted stress to so many tradespeople.Don’t expect anything for free and never give away your skills for free.Shared and Discussed linkshttps://nextsupply.cahttps://nextsupply.ca/?s=Road+Hockeyhttps://modernniagara.comhttps://www.ipexna.com/usa/products/industrial/acid-waste-systems/enfield-electrofusion/https://www.rosegoldhomes.nethttps://roadhockeytoconquercancer.ca@prostreammechanical@spencerk87https://www.kingofdrains.cahttps://osteriagente.caWhat an amazing show full of truthful insight, I thank you so much Jeff for sharing so much on your take on plumbing, drains, construction and more, educating our listeners on everything to do with your trade, and skills. #173 Master Electrician, Fire Alarms, Safety and the Whole Wide Construction World with Patricio

E

Welcome to TCL’s longest show to date, over 2 hours and for good reason. Patricio and his lovely wife, Pricilla is on the show. The focus on this show will be about safety but we will discuss electrical, a few other trades, the industry, schools, new trades, old trades and right back to safety. Patricio with 22 years of electrical experience, master electrician and fire alarms certified. At 18 years old he had a bad accident on site and a pair of safety goggles could have saved his eye from blindness. This is one opening story you must listen to.After the accident and trying to move on he got back on site, but the sound of the saw triggered him and he was diagnosed with PTSD, he bolted from the job site, he left. Patricio disappeared on his motorcycle and did a road trip out east and that trip gave him the confidence to get back into the trades, he became a master electrician. From there he was paying attention to the 2 groups of tradespeople that are getting hurt the most, the new kids and the old timers, new kids because they have something to prove, the old timers because they have done it a thousand times.Patricio shares another story about new tradespeople being tasked to carry a 1500-pound transformer up the stairs, sure enough only one of the new trades said no while the others agreed, it didn’t end well. Patricio talks about knowing your basic right to refuse unsafe work, never be pressured to do something that you as a tradesperson know is not safe. The conversation shifts to education, getting trades back into high schools and making guidance counselors to present trades as an option to every student, not every student is going to or want to go to university, some are passionate about construction. We compare trades to other careers, we discuss how learning the electrical trade here in Canada and the USA means you can use that trade globally, you can go work in other countries as options.New trades, old trades, Journeymen, everyone, take the second and ask if you have your PPE and make sure others around you have their PPE, take the time to put on your PPE.Not everything is rainbows and butterflies.Shared and Discussed linkshttps://www.kleintools.comhttps://www.fluke.com/en-caWhat an amazing show full of enlightening insight, I thank you so much Patricio for sharing so much on your take on construction and more, educating our listeners on everything to do with your trade, men and women in construction and skills. #172 Taping and Beyond with Sunaina talking plastering, females in construction, puppies, harassment and more

E

We have one hell of a great show today, Sunaina, a self-taught taper with 6 years in the business, coming from university degrees to bartender, to construction, to dog grooming and more. Sunaina will not be holding back, she has a lot to say about the construction life and yes, we will discuss men and women in construction and how men treat women and why.A first for TCL we have a puppy on the show, Sir Nicholas Liam will be sharing a few of his thoughts throughout the show which brings us to a side hustle of Sunaina – Pup-StructionWe get right into women in construction and inappropriate behavior, no sugar coating anything here. Sunaina brings up a recent scenario that unfolded where the upper management felt it was better to remove the female and make the males comfortable then to educate the males to be respectful of the female, which is total BULLSHIT. She brings up a great comparison about socializing dogs to tradesmen. We back track a little bit and bring up Sunaina’s path to construction, she has a triple degree from the University of Waterloo, in Drugs and Addiction Health Promotion, with a minor in sexuality, family and marriage studies. Bartending to pay bills, then her roommate had a connection to construction and that is where it all began for Sunaina during her educational years. She doesn’t regret the school, but she wishes started sooner in construction. We discuss taping tools and where and why certain tools and brands will and won’t work for her scope, always considering why don’t you as a tradesperson not like one brand over another. Then we get into mud and how Sunaina has such a hatred for 5-minute mud as we all should. We discuss PPE and coming into the construction industry, one day you the student will be the teacher one day and we have to watch out for all of our brothers and sisters in construction. We end the show we Sunaina’s sharing some thoughts on Covid and Vaccines. She shares some very interesting thoughts behind both, some things to consider.Shared and Discussed linkshttps://csrbuilding.com@eugene_crsbuildingsupplieshttps://www.nela.toolshttps://www.level5tools.comhttps://www.usg.com/content/usgcom/en/products/walls/drywall/joint-compound/lightweight-joint-compounds/sheetrock-plus-3-joint-compound.htmlhttps://www.certainteed.com/drywall/finishing/products/easi-fil-dust-away-joint-compound/What an amazing show full of enlightening insight, I thank you so much Sunaina for sharing so much on your take on construction and more, educating our listeners on everything to do with your taping, trades, men and women in construction and skills. #170 Paolo Foglia – Fogliatile - Stone, Masonry, Tile, Marble Restoration / Installer and Expert

A true stone artist, Paolo talks to us about his beginnings, his arrival to Canada, the country he loves because it has given him so much. Paolo was a peacekeeper, in the army, Special Forces as a teenager and into his 30’s, working for the government studying civil engineering in college back in Italy, originally from Viciano, on the edge of Naples. Paolo’s construction career began with him studying history, studying techniques from centuries back, studying what and how and why Michelangelo did what he did with the works of art that we all know so well. Paolo’s education and scope of work involves going to and choosing blocks of stone direct from the quarries, understanding true book match cutting, slab match cutting or random. Planning the cuts, setting up the cuts, quarry manufacturing is a generational skillset, the father teaches the son and they look at the mountain, they assess the best place to begin, do they cut into or up the mountain? There is a real art to diamond rope cutting blocks of stone from a mountain.Everyone thinks that natural stone will never end but it’s difficult to say, some say there is another 300 years’ worth but if you consider technology and machinery being able to remove the stone faster it could be 100 years. There is a monopoly on the stone, the price of stone fluctuates with the supply and demand. Paolo is always nervous about his projects, he takes that nervousness and embraces it, it challenges him, he uses his experiences throughout the years to solve things, he’s learned how to manipulate the physical properties of stone. Paolo wants to cross his limits, he wants to test, educate, experiment, challenge and take stone to new heights, he wants to put his hand in the fire, he wants to see how things are and will they last based on his calculations and experiences. Every tile trade must understand structure and where the structure and or point loads are and extra care should be placed at those points especially when installing large format tiling and stone. Paolo has never worked a day in his life, because he loves what he does, it’s his passion. Paolo discusses installing marble slabs in garages, that’s right, full slabs of marble on garage floors, he has clients that request, or desire, or expect to drive over marble, not concrete, we discuss. He shares his technique of installing dry pack “fresh” to achieve 1000 pounds per square inch. Paolo has a lot of respect for history and learning from the past teachers, some were engineers, most weren’t but they understood how to separate the body by the spirit and become free to think of new ways, better ways to design and build. He has clients ask him,”make my wife cry tears of happiness”. Lastly, Paolo shares another great passion of his, food, and he’s been working on a mobile pizza stone oven and great quality pizza, must listen to how he talks about pizza. One more last note, Paolo discusses his custom slab and mosaic work that he’s developed and he shares how he does it. #169 David Maniccia of Luco Design & Build shares his 20 plus years of navigating through construction

E

Before the mics get recording David’s brother drops off some amazing food from Ombretta Cucina, amazing pizzas from Pizzeria Rosso…OMG So good. Thank you so much. Check them out and trust me, you will love the food. Open the show with a listener message from Mike Dunn from Washington @m1keandike24 asking how he can start on his own and some of the things to consider when you make that move. We are going to talk about everything, how he got started, who taught him, building a business from scratch, dealing with trades, clients, designers, Tarion, management, the past, present and future of construction, and somehow, we chat about HGTV, I never spark it, guests spark it and David has more than a few interesting stories to share there and still even more. Hold on, fasten your safety harness and prepare for a classic TCL show because we are going to piss a few “individuals” off. It all began with Nono, David’s grandfather, an immigrant came to this country like so many others and worked hard in the rail industry, David’s Dad followed his steps but then got into construction, eventually David followed his Dad into construction and here we are. Through networking David was able to get his name out there and be given a chance to submit an estimate and eventually get to work with these designers and many others, the word spread and spread fast because of the quality and the positive experience David was offering his clients. David is offering high quality engineered hardwood flooring and high-quality stone and tile, check it out. Manny wants to invent a TCL Fly where we can leave it at the client’s house after we didn’t get the job, that way we can tune into the live TCL Feed and watch how and why certain jobs go bad. Get your stockings ready, this might be a huge seller on Amazon. LOLDavid wraps up the show by letting everyone know all his friends are in the trades, they all have successful careers, happy fulfilling families, choosing a career in construction should be an option for a lot of kids and we need to get trades back into high schools and we need to educate these stupid parents to let their kids choose a career in trades if that is where their passion is. #168 Chris Allen of On Point Contracting talking hiring, working and sourcing out new leads in construction

E

We open the show with a recent message from @seantaggy which pretty much set the tone of today’s show. Sean had a lot to ask being a new listener to TCL and loves the show, he has since gone back to the beginning and has been listening to all the shows. Huge thanks Sean and I hope the shows and this show help you. I will say this much Sean, M.A.P will be a huge resource for all your questions and this exclusive membership will launch before the year is over, watch for it and I encourage you consider being a M.A.P. Member. Here’s a first, want to reach out to Manny, text him on his mobile, 416 433-5737 and or email him at [email protected] or [email protected] Please let him know who you are and then ask away. TCL has and always will be about giving back to the construction industry. On with the show. This show is about hiring, sourcing out leads, moving up the construction business ladder, putting yourself out there for your first lead or your current leads, how to present you and your business to others and understanding, as tradespeople, you are learning every single day, set aside the ego and the expensive toys and bring you’re A-Z game, every day. We begin by understanding the paper side of this business is far more important than the skill side of this business. 2016 Chris started his construction career with Local 27, that was his beginning. He learned what he could but ultimately Union wasn’t for him, his next step was going into residential through some online job postings. Chris loves construction for the clear cut, black and white that it truly is, you either fit in or fuck off. We discuss your worth as a tradesperson, the skills and skillset you bring to each project calculating your rate, your worth and adding to your business and brand. Manny shares a thought about construction multiverses, where if there is another Manny, doing another version of TCL, that Manny might be a Makita Manny, because Makita does make a great line of tools. There is no multiverse where Manny is a DeWalt guy. Chris brings up an interesting fact, the word “prestige” a word that is thrown around with certain construction tools, in French that word translates as fake, an illusion, a trick, deceit, a lie. #167 Julia Rose - The Brick Chick is on the show talking all kinds of brick, block, stone and restoration work

E

We have Julia Rose AKA The Brick Chick on the show, 26 years young, 3 years in the business, a young and skilled mason leading the way for men and women in the industry. Julia at a young age had a lot of mental health, drug addictions issues, it was a hard time for her. She was considering post education and unlike her friends looking at universities and a mountain of student loan debt, she chose to be a mason. Never worked as a mason, never apprenticed as any trade, didn’t really know construction but she had a passion, and she went with her passion. She came across an ad for free masonry training, free tools, all set and ready to get learning, she enrolled into the Ontario Masonry Training Centre - https://ontariomasonrytrainingcentre.com Julia has been involved with brick replacements, damaged brick, restoration, block, tuckpointing, stone repair, partition walls, elevator shafts, and more, she has picked up so many tips and tricks from so many other masons. Early on in her career Julia had a great mentor that shared a lot and it all began with blueprints, drawings, learning the paper side of the business which is incredibly important part of being a tradesperson. It was not an easy road for Julia entering the mason trade with a few tradesmen, not even mal mason, all sorts of tradesmen say stupid things to her solely based on her being a woman. Such comments as, “Don’t even bother, you’ll never be as good, as strong as a man.” We get right into women in the trades and why a small segment of male trades treat women in the trades the way they do, Julia isn’t shy on the subject because she experiences it all the time. How do we get more women into the trades, set aside the political replies and get right to the core and find suggestions that will change the industry, Julia shares her thoughts? Coming from the gym and power lifting, Julia is asked all the time, being a mason is easy for her, lifting and training is a different world than masonry work and she explains it further, the gym saved her from a toxic downward spiral her life was heading. Bottom line Julia isn’t afraid to ask questions when it comes to her passions, she’s not afraid to speak to her fellow trades and other trades, get a better understanding on why the electrician, the plumber, why everyone is doing what they are doing. She wants to change this industry for better and change begins with absorbing the current knowledge and then discuss making things better for everyone. I wish Julia all the best and please continue the amazing work that you provide your clients, thank you. #166 Julie Sawchuk Accessible Solutions Inc. Accessible Design Construction and more

Training for a triathlon Julie was biking and was hit by a car and paralysed from the breastbone down. Thrown 30 feet, split her head, broke teeth, broke her nose, broke ribs, broke her spine in two places, T4 and L1. 5 people every day sustain a spinal cord injury in Ontario. Fast forward 6 years and Julie is now an Accessibility Strategist. How do we begin having conversations with accessible clients? Just have the same conversations you would have with other clients, no reason to beat around the bush, ask the questions, get to know your clients, having those direct questions answered will help contractors and designers design and build a perfect space for your clients, all your clients.By far the bathroom is the most important room for accessibility, so many details that need to be thoroughly considered. Consider space around toilet, seating inside shower, where the valves will be, always a thermostatic valve, linear drains with one side slope, there is so much to consider, have those conversations. We must consider all trades and their scope of work, light switch heights, HVAC thermostat height, garage door opener height, so many details that must be discussed and considered.22% of the Canadian population is identified as accessible needs, more businesses need to realize the loss revenue, more contractors need to begin building for accessible clients. Accessibility is about energy, when a space isn’t dead level, a person using a wheelchair must use more physical and mental strength to move around the space. We need to have more industry people looking into building for more accessible clients and understanding that accessible can be brough to new levels of design and construction. Universal design is family design.Shared and Discussed Linkshttps://www.ontario.ca/page/specialist-high-skills-majorhttps://www.scc.ca/en/standards/notices-of-intent/csa/accessible-homesWhat an amazing show and thank you so much Julie for sharing so much personal experiences and educating our listeners on so much to do with accessible renovating, Thank you. #165 Peter from Picasso Interior Con – Crown Moulding / 3D Plaster Walls / Waffle Ceilings & Stone Veneers

E

25-year-old Peter, working at this trade for 8 years now is going to talk about Styrofoam plaster mouldings, coffered ceilings, waffle ceilings, diamond patterns, accent walls and so much more. The reason Peter started his business and has always built to a certain standard, he was disgusted with where the construction industry was going. Peter gets very passionate about million-dollar custom homes with upgrades that have no value because the builders use the cheapest of the cheap material, such as 7” MDF baseboards, that’s not right.Peter uses a 12” Makita stone blade on his Milwaukee mitre saw, he has to remove the guard to make the cuts he needs, especially when it’s a bigger crown, and he uses the fence the same way you would for wood mouldings. Even if his cut is a little off the special mix of plaster will make that joint perfect, that’s his trade secret, his R&D for the construction industry. There is a theory that your crown should be as many inches as your walls are in feet, 9 foot walls, asks for 9” crown, that’s incorrect. Crown must be used for the space and the size should complement the space, it’s a trial and error with samples. At 23 Peter bought his first house, at 22 he opened his business, he has so many friends that are not doing anything with their lives, they are just riding life out, they are waking up at 1 in the afternoon, without a care in the world. WOW. Peter shares a great tip and product that he uses to install his one step beam and crown pieces for the coffered ceilings, and he continues to share how he installs an entire ceiling design.Peter and I have a straight up conversation on what’s really next for all of us in construction, what to expect in the next year or two and why we have the expectations that we share. Peter also shares where he got his drive from, such a great story. There is so much uncertainty these days and that goes for construction, for all the tradespeople, entrepreneurs and building your businesses, do not overextend yourself, build but build your business slowly, careful, there is a bad recession coming and a lot of you tradespeople have not experienced a recession and you really want to be ready for it.
