#248 Vintage Ideas LTD with Steve Sampaio and Jennifer Sherman discussing Rustic Designing and Construction

E

How did it all begin? Children’s BDay party and a few drinks and plenty of pics about wood and the ideas started flowing. Steve didn’t have any formal construction experience, but he would tinker and build odd things and then friends suggested he should do this as a business and Vintage was born. Steve and Jenn love what they do, they love to create ideas for clients, they love working with mother nature resources and making vintage ideas come alive. Vintage has been built on 100% creative and customer service; it is a boutique business catering to the creative clients that want to take their home to new levels of warmth. We discuss different species of wood and mother nature and the climate of your home; clients need to understand that your home environment will have a huge impact on the projects and details that are installed in the home. Of course, the topic of tools comes up and Jenn shares that she loves Festool and Manny calls them the Louie Vuitton of tools. Gary gets on the mic to have a pretty heated conversation over glues and applications and plenty of truths are shared. Half way through this show, Steve shares some amazing insight about life, dreams, passion and well worth listening to his kind and moving words. We end the show with what must be the longest 12 questions of construction with Steve and Jenn’s replies. Steve ends the show with a phrase his Dad always taught him, the work won’t kill you. Steve has some great life advice towards the end of the show and he speaks highly about his sufficient other in his life. #247 Tony and Dave from GD Contracting Services Inc from Roofing to Renovations to so many lessons to learn

Tony Viera and Dave from GD Contracting Services Inc. are here to share their many stories, from a humble beginning working in roofing and eventually int renovations of all scopes. It all began with roofing, working with their Dad’s and uncles during all extremes of mother nature. Dave did it for 6 years and Tony for 20 years before he got out and began renovating. This show will dive into the education of construction, the search for the next group of trades, the lessons learned from every employer they worked for and worked with. Construction has and always will be about learning every single day and the Dave and Tony carry that mindset to this very day since they have no plans in the near future to hang up the tool belts. There are major issues coming our way, with Tony and Dave, they know half of their staff is 5 years away from retirement and they are scrambling to figure out future moves, we all are. Take the initiative to stay longer on the job site and watch experienced trades doing what they do best and ask questions. You can look at it two ways, not making money to learn or making future money, you decide, it’s all perspective. At the age of 40 Tony took a blueprint reading course, there is always time to better educate yourself especially in the trades. #246 UBILD the new construction app that we all have been waiting for and Matteo Nunziata here to discuss it

Matteo Nunziata is on the show to discuss changing the construction industry with his app UBild. Of course, we will discuss plenty of construction bones to pick, old school vs new school, trade schools, technology and construction, politics, and so much more, one show not to miss. Matteo began his construction career by knocking on doors and offering up odd jobs, known as Odd Job Matthew in the neighborhood, from there he began to look at the industry differently, he realized how inefficient the industry is. The objective of this app isn’t to replace tradespeople, they are augmenting the experience, we’re making people more efficient and by doing that, they keep people at the core of it all. This isn’t an app for Diyers, this is for the professional industry. It takes a young tradesperson to be a role model for the industry and we must take control of all the opportunities to achieve major change in construction. It truly is about building a community and not competition, tradespeople are wired in such a way that they look forward to the completion of tasks, that serotonin kick is what we all are after. The app was designed and continues to be built around tradespeople, something the industry really needs. #245 Bob Peel the Happy Boss / Brafasco / Mentor / Gentleman / Consultant of the many industries

I first met Bob nearly 20 years ago and to sit down with Bob, expect hours and hours of your time as he truly enjoys sharing his wealth of knowledge with anyone that will ask. Hold on, for our longest show ever and Carlito and Manny could have gone longer speaking with Bob. This isn’t a show to miss and please do yourself a favour and take notes. At The Construction Life we embrace guests offering up suggestions and with this show Bob preferred opening the show with a spoken word and quite the opening, thank you Bob. Carlito is back! Life does throw us some curve balls and we all go through good and bad times, Carlito’s Dad passed away and it has been a hard time for him, we wish him the best. Humble beginnings for Bob back in the 60’s and began his work ethic by tending to farm animals and working at a green house, from their his Dad started a company, Brampton fastener Company, eventually becoming Brafasco. Okay Hero is an expression Bob will share a lot and for good reason, it’s his way of knowing it’s time to get going, what’s next, how to figure out the challenges. After some European traveling and hockey playing, Bob returns home, 18 years old and his Dad turns to him and saying we are putting these nuts and bolts kits together, why don’t you try to sell these to farmers. The last thing Bob wanted to do was be a salesman. Turns out he could sell, and he sold a kit an hour and made 20 bucks per kit back in the late 70’s. That is how it began. Bob shares his customer service knowledge, working on his own personal home gave him more practical experience and it wasn’t because he wanted to be a contractor, he wanted to be of more service to his contractor customers. Don’t be afraid of getting things wrong, whatever we do, we will do it better the second time. The Judge, Jury and Executioner of every business is the Customer. The customer decides whether you will survive. #244 Larry Serpa from Key Tile Co and Key Surfaces is back on the show to get technical about tile installing

We open with must be the worst version of Easy, and rolled right into why we are not drinking on a Sunday morning. Larry Serpa from Key Tile Co and Key Surfaces is back. He was traveling back home to Pico Azores with a stop in Toronto so we had a chance to stop by for him to meet some of the Portuguese trades in Toronto. Fabio @fabio.andrade51 who was late to meet up with us on the current job site. Joe from @jrentrysystems Gary and the Old Man from @marescarpentry Tony from @tc.installations.inc and lastly Omid and his crew from @thetileguy.gta On today’s show, we get technical about tiling and Larry shares quite a lot about his many years of experience and working with so many different types of tiles, slabs, mosaics, mortars, substrates and more, don’t want to miss this one. We begin with old school and how things were done and how tiling as a trade does take a toll on your body and it really is a young trades game. Tiling always leads to discussing health and safety and all tile setters must understand you’re not only responsible for you and your crews safety but every other trade on site, don’t be cutting tile and or backer board with no proper protection. We discuss interior and exterior installations and understanding BC and specifically Vancouver has a climate that only 2% of the world has, where you have rainforest conditions with freeze thaw and a lot of the time in the same day. So many factors apply to tile, stone, slab installs, and experience is important to best understand techniques. Larry walks us through the products and tricks of the trade he has built his business on, things like dry mixing products because the ingredients do settle at the bottle of the bag/box. We discuss, mixing ratios and shelf lives of the products. Larry shares his thoughts on shower pans, dry pack, drains and so much more and how things have evolved and where they might be headed. We close out the show with a lot of talk on project function over project design, never forget the function of the room.Shared and Discussed Linkshttps://laticrete.com/en/tile-and-stone-care-and-maintenance/stonetech-protect/stonetech-bulletproof-sealerhttps://www.winklerchimica.com/en/https://www.juliesawchuk.cahttps://www.kohler.ca/ca/round-shower-drain-for-use-with-plastic-pipe-gasket-included/productDetail/shower-fittings/420322.htm?skuId=1284599https://ebbe-america.comhttps://www.annsacks.comhttp://trufig.comThank you so much Larry for being on the show again and getting way more techincal, making the time while visiting the Toronto area and sharing so much insight into the tiling trade and more. #243 Side Hustles for all Tradespeople We all have more than one passion in our construction lives

We open the show with a little Rob Base and it takes two, not the best version but we did it and it’s fitting for today’s show. A couple of shout outs to @hh.concpets sharing a few messages about preparing for a potential recession. @summitexteriorsidaho discussing moving his business from Canada to the States. On with the SHOW we talk about Side Hustles, and we will be doing a series of these shows featuring tradespeople that have worked on other things outside of construction. I wrote a novel, a love story, a romance story set in Toronto about a woman, Hayley who recently has a breakup and is fed up with relationships discovers hundreds of love letters that belonged to a couple from a decade earlier. That is the basic premise of the story, and we are along for the ride to search for Amabel and the man in her life, Joshan. I began writing this story Dec 25, 2018, and it took me about 6 months to write out a 160-page script. I shard the story with a few friends from the film business, they loved it, they had a lot of questions, to be honest so did I. I sat on the story for another 6 months and then decided to write the novel. I suppose I was hesitant to write the novel because I’m not a writer and there are rules to writing and the literary world is a different and very pretentious world that a contractor really has no business being in. Then I realized, wait, I am Manny from Hardcore Renos, and The Construction Life and I really don’t care what people think. Fear should never be a reason for you not to do something. I embraced it and began writing the novel. Another year and I had a 600-page story, I worked on all those missing pieces of the story, and without sounding egotistical, the story really did write itself, the characters and the connections just flowed across the page. Here we are now, a finished 525-page novel, a story that I wrote, and published and I am very proud of. People are now reading it and the feedback is very positive, women are crying several times, connection with the characters and the scenarios, their actions and they love how it begins and how it all ends. Sure, there will be people that won’t like your written words and that is fine, the story of Amabel isn’t for everyone but as a contractor I had this story inside me and I felt obligated to put it down on paper and share it with others. This show is about Side Hustles and in construction I believe everyone in this amazing industry has a lot to offer outside of swinging the hammer. Find other passions and don’t be afraid to embrace it, build it, share it, believe in it. The rest is simply going to shape more happiness into your life. I hope you get a chance to support the book and read it, share it with others and tell me what you think of it. I honestly want to know. Thank you so much for your time. Shawn Silva, an Engineering Technologist who created A3C to help others navigate the blockchain landscape and Marco Carlini, a salesperson in the concrete industry are here to share a lot about cryptocurrency, blockchain, NFT’s and a whole lot more.On with the show. What is Blockchain? A blockchain is a distributed system that achieves security through cryptography and consensus without relying on trust.Nearly two years studying and investing in blockchain, Shawn has learned a lot from his initial $1000.00 investment in a few currencies and he has stuck with Cardano. He believes in the Cardano mandates as he dives deep into the founder, Charles Hoskinson, please look him up.Shawn and Marco discuss the Terra Luna crash over 3 days, where it went from $160.00 to worth 0.000019 and a lot of people lost their life savings and people committed suicide. Where did that money go? That is the fear. There are two types of Blockchains, Proof of Work and Proof of State and the guys break it all down. They discuss DeFi, there are two types of exchanges, secs and decs. When you create a blockchain there is a 3-pillar system, Security, Scalability, and Interoperability. #241 Essa Abdool-Karim a Corporate / Commercial Lawyer here to share loads about the law and more

DISCLAIMERLet’s begin the show by saying that the information shared on this show is in NO WAY legal advice to any of our listeners, please schedule a meeting with a lawyer to further discuss your particular legal issues.Operating his own private practise for 2 years now, graduated University of Ottawa, worked for an investment broker dealer after he did his article for a sports and entertainment firm. He was planning on moving to Chicago but then the pandemic had other plans, he stayed in Canada and now on his own with Regalia Law. We get discussing the reasons why Essa became a lawyer and that leads to at some point in your construction career you will have to have a meeting with a lawyer to either defend or protect yourself. We shift gears to discussing the housing crisis, Blackstone entering the Canadian housing market, stocks, crypto, lending rates, and so much more, there is something going on and if you are not having conversations about it, you might be left in a bad situation one day in the near future. Essa brings up the recent court case going on right now regarding the travel ban for any unvaccinated Canadians where the court will be hearing arguments in Sept 2022 by the last living signatory of The Charter Of Rights.Towards the last third of the show we dive into the legal language and potential situations tradespeople could find themselves in one day, we begin with, how to find a lawyer that you can work with and have represent you. We discuss small claims, the legal procedures, contracts, people being spiteful and so many more reasons why the courts are so back logged and why people go the litigation route. Essa sheds some light on Piercing the Corporate Veil, basically there is a way that a lawyer can go after you personally regardless if your business is incorporated. A good contract will have a clause, in the event of a dispute, you mediate first, then you arbitrate and then you litigate and if clients decide to breach the contract, then you have grounds to argue the clause they ignored and decided to clogged the courts and this could have the claim dismissed. The show wraps up with Manny revealing what his realistic representation of a renovation show would look like and it’s worth the listen.Shared and Discussed Linkshttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pSTNhBlfV_shttps://www.ontario.ca/document/your-guide-employment-standards-act-0Thank You so much Essa for sharing so much about the industry and other areas that are dramatically affecting everyone. #240 Bradley Dell from Built By Bradley is here to share his construction life and the hardships he has gone through

E

This show will relate to so many tradespeople working in the industry, please give this show a listen as Bradley shares why and how he got into construction and the path he took, or you could say the path that took him. Thank you so much Bradley for sharing so much and opening up, I know there are a few other tradespeople listening that have or are going through similar struggles. This show we will discuss the industry, business owning and running, union strikes, economy, mental health, addictions and more. Bradley began his career with Local 183, who are currently on strike as they should be when they have not had a change in their contract since before the pandemic. Before starting his own business, he worked with a number of builders and had a chance to see the bad and good sides of the business, unfortunately more bad than good, that is how many of us learn. Bradley has plans of growing his business to custom home builder and even gated communities. The topic of mental health comes up and Bradley opens about his past and the struggles he has gone through. In his late teens, a hockey star, the popular kid, partying, became an alcoholic and quickly followed with an addiction ecstasy at the age of 19, carried that along until he was 23 and was introduced to cocaine. Once Bradley was hooked on cocaine, he would wake up in the morning, start his day with a beer and more cocaine before heading to work. His life became darker and darker, he never thought it would end, he figured this was his life for the rest of his life, he knew what he was doing was wrong and his thoughts led him to consider suicide, driving his truck off a bridge. February 19 2021, Bradley finally said to himself, enough, enough. He just finished a 5 day bender of booze and cocaine and he thought of his family, his nieces and nephew and his family helped him back and helped him survive. Arriving on the job site, he hid and cried, nobody on the jobsite knew what Bradley was going through, nobody really knows what any of us are really going through. Bradley called his Mom and she put plans in place and he was quickly admitted into a crisis centre for 72 hours and that was the beginning of his recovery. The hardest part of quitting the addictions for Bradley, was finding himself. For the last few years he put this façade for everyone else and never realized he needed to find his true self.Shared and Discussed Linkshttps://www.instagram.com/eq_construction/Timmy from Virginia.DC metro area is looking for a contractor for a master bathroom renovation anyone listening in that area and interested in learning more, please reach out to him at [email protected] Hopefully someone will reach out to him. #239 Grad Concept Inc Talking the best Deck and Siding Clip Systems with Gwladys Petit and Jon Witt from Deck Protect

What a great show we have, I first met Gwladys and the Grad Concept crew over 2 years ago at IBS, I knew about them through Thermory and the PaCs clip system and trust me, once you use any of the Grad Concept systems, you will never look back at any other type of system for all of your projects. On the show we dive deep into the products and the ease of use, the countless uses for the clips for decking, siding, features, interior use and so much more and remember they have a key that allows you to unlick the clip and free the board in the event the board was damaged, or you need access behind the board. Just over 2 years ago, Gwladys had 3 weeks to put together a first impression in the North American market and off she went, up for the challenge she organized everything and was placed at the show in Las Vegas right next to the major players and Grad held their own because it is a great product. In that first year, they had sales of $7,000.00 in 2019, not much of a market share but then this year, they are over a million and still growing. Gwladys understands when it comes to construction most products are incremental when they arrive on the market, with Grad, the product became disruptive, and it is now changing the landscape. 16 years of innovation allows the clips to assist with board movement, adding longevity to the boards, ease of removal, ventilation is promoted, there are so many benefits to using this clip system. With the growth they have experienced in the last 2 years it is now time to set up shop in the USA and they are, building an office in Houston with plans to manufacture in the US very soon. Grad believes that the company should be here and not just ship here. Grad Concept USA has their own software to help you with take offs no matter the size and or shape. They also carry pedestals and the pedestals are designed to accommodate the clip rails, it really is Lego for tradespeople. The even have privacy fencing, the products continue to grow as Grad Concept USA works on keeping up with the creativity of the industry. They are also hiring for the Houston office so if anyone is interested in working for a great company and being a part of changing the industry please reach out to Gwladys.Shared and Discussed Linkshttps://burgeretcie.frhttps://www.booa.frhttps://www.youtube.com/channel/UCv8Fhii4h8wIkrT3eqoBaUghttps://www.poolspapatio.com/en/home.htmlhttps://www.iccsafe.org/products-and-services/i-codes/2018-i-codes/irc/Thank You so much Gwladys and Jon for sharing so much about the clip industry. #238 John Masalkofski of Arctic Fence and General Contracting over 50 years of family owned business

E

Amazing to have John on the show talking the fencing business for the past 50 years, from humble beginnings as an immigrant with his grandfather, working on smaller residential projects to full scale commercial and industrial projects of today. So much to discuss on this show, but first up, we discuss the economy and I must say, it is refreshing to hear from a 26 year old like John that feels there is something bad coming our way, he has heard the stories from his Dad, from his GrandDad from the past, how difficult it was to get work during those lean years, John offers up a lot of great insight. We have a great conversation about welding and the skill attached. John shares the proper footings for his posts, from resi, to commercial to industrial, sometimes they are working with posts that are 3/8” thick steel for security purposes behind correctional institutions. John brings up so many great points behind profit and understanding your profit margins and what you and your business is really making because most tradespeople don’t really know, they just assume they are making money. Right now John is keeping the business lean because he knows to be safe than sorry. John shares a number of stories on how is Dad built the business with relationships, being knowledgeable on the job site has an advantage, communicating with engineers and architects, and finally coming to the conclusion that everything works on paper but never on the jobsite, that is where the skills come to play. So many products have been developed by tradespeople handling things on site, figuring how to make things better, more efficient, boots on the ground is incredibly valuable, don’t ever forget that. We finally get a chance to discuss locates and job site duties. We end the show discussing the why of construction, understand the why, when your business isn’t what it used to be, go back to the why, when you have those bad days, bad clients, go back to the why, always go back to the why of construction.Shared and Discussed Linkshttps://www.morgansmetal.comhttps://fencearmor.com/collections/stain-seal-wood-stainhttps://streetsoftoronto.com/19-condo-towers-and-up-to-10000-residents-could-land-at-yorkdale/ Thank You so much John for sharing so much about the industry. Finally have Mike Valchuk, the man, the myth, the contractor on the show and what a show it is. We begin by discussing his 8 years of construction and how during the beginning of the pandemic Mike and his partner Grant O’Neal felt they needed to pivot, shift gears, an idea that will carry through this episode and has been brought up on so many other TCL shows. Mike and Grant decided to seek professional coaching and they have never regretted it. When they realized the business was creating mirrored years and didn’t see sales grow, they knew something needed to be done. Upon doing a little google searching they sourced out two possible coaching business, one in Australia and one in Canada, they opted for the Canadian one, the links are below.Mike shares some great tips on structuring your business, looking at profit and understanding that $100.00 isn’t what you get to keep, you need to understand what to do with that money and something the younger trades are doing is investing some of that money, building your business and personal equity. Passion vs Profit comes up once again and it will always come up and Mike shares an interesting story speaking to a business coach of his, you better have that passion because this is the hardest industry to be in, he’s right. Clients will use the emotional card to get those extras, to make you work harder for no extra money, that is not right, you have to train your clients on how to behave is what Mike has been taught.Mike shares his thoughts on Hamilton area and how it has been developing nicely over the years and a lot of people from the Toronto area are moving out there and building, renovating adding to a very thriving industry in the Hammer.Of course, we get chatting about tools and the Building Dreams Team is mostly red but Mike has an interesting story to share about their SkilSaw table saw with a very interesting ending. Must listen. We discuss the potential recession that could happen and how to prepare your business for it. As we wrap the show Mike shares his history before construction where he was an owner of 4 locations of Pita Pits over 10 years and how he learned so much from the way they ran the business and he appreciated continuing being a student and how he took all of those lessons into construction.Shared and Discussed Linkshttps://theprofessionalbuilder.comhttps://www.btacademy.comhttps://www.guestplumbing.comhttps://www.instagram.com/guestplumbing/https://www.eagleviewconstruction.comThank You so much Mike for sharing so much about the industry. #236 Natalia Pierce from Detail By Design is here to share her Kitchen and Bath and Wellness experiences

Nearly 2 decades in the business Natalia has seen and experienced so much, she is WELL AP, AKBD, CLIPP certified and recently completed her first book, hopefully 1 of 3 of a series of renovation books to help the industry and clients. Natalia is a kitchen and bath designer and there is a difference between her and an Interior Designer and even a decorator. Off to the designing races, Natalia shares that there should never be a microwave over a cooking surface, the same with a TV over a fireplace, plus cooking fans should be oversized and a conversation with HVAC should always happen because that exhaust will affect the building air flow. Natalia discusses appliances, specs, her favs including a new style and type of range hood Fotile, the link is below. How important these conversations are way ahead of the first day of demo. Air quality leads us to chatting about Wellness and Natalia has worked with Linda from Living in Place who has been on the show twice now. She dives deep into the client and construction relationships and what to do when things go bad and they will go bad. Lighting and lighting designing and why electricians are so stuck in their ways with lighting plans based on symmetrical placement of lighting? We discuss lumens, cone, purpose of lights, style of lights, color temp of lights and much more. #235 Paul Gancman from Kitchen Fix is here to talk kitchen repairs and more

What a great show we have, Paul is here to share his insight into the wonderful world of kitchen repairs and contractors mistakes and of course, we are talking about those short cuts that eventually lead to failures and homeowners are left with dealing with the builder, warranties or bringing in a professional like Paul to get it done and get it done properly. His business and reputation grew very quickly because Paul found by dealing with smaller scope of work, he was able to fulfil the solution and make the client happy, his reviews grew fast and furiously and the word go around, Kitchen Fix was the brand to work with. Anyone in this industry knows you can never please every client and they will leave bad reviews, even bad reviews on your quote and Paul has learned, move on, just accept you can’t please everyone and go find another client. Paul has built his business on efficiency, clients submit a pic, he reviews the scope, he brings what he needs, they fabricate on site, set up his tools in the underground, parking lot, down the street, not matter as long as he has the space to build what he needs and always wraps up the day by cleaning everything up, keeping the home safe and clean. All about the final impression his brand leaves his clients. Paul is very clear on how he works, the skills he provides, and he does get a lot of clients asking for ballparks, he doesn’t do that, he asks for pics of what the scope is, he determines the work and cost and presents it. He never goes back to fix any of his work, he has his standards and clients feel he is high, he tells clients that he is high but the work will never have to be done again. Set your standard and build from that level. Paul calls it “Deceptively Complex”, this industry, you are the brand and once you wrap your mindset around that, you will be hugely successful.Shared and Discussed Linkshttps://www.blum.com/ca/en/company/about-blum-canada/https://www.salice.com/us/en/products/hingeshttps://www.grass.at/1404.html?L=1https://www.leevalley.com/en-cahttps://www.richelieu.com/ca/en/https://www.hafele.ca/en/Thank You so much Paul for sharing so much about the industry. #234 Bethany King Real Estate Broker who built her professional network and business using Tik Tok

E

What an amazing show we have today, Bethany King, threw herself into real estate after being laid off a job she loved, quitting a safe, secure, soul sucking federal government job, realizing as a millennial she needs to make more money to be able to buy her own home one day, she asked herself several questions and went searching for all the answers. Then came Tik Tok and she used the platform to build her network and in turn create sales, all the while never selling herself. She focused on sharing what she was learning with anyone and everyone that would listen and relate to her as a single mom. As we all know there are so many of us in the exact same real estate, mortgage approval, making ends meet, boat. Don’t miss this great show and we promise you, the insight on this show will make you move your ass and go after what you deserve to have in your life. Bethany shares so much and she knew that she needed to increase her income in a short amount of time, that way she can look a lot better on paper when it came time to apply for that mortgage. She brings up a huge point that has been shared on this show several times, Gen Z and Millennials are using today’s tech-based platforms to create wealth, they are looking at NFT’s, Crypto and more and they are doing the research and figuring out the opportunities. Tik Tok. First thing to do is consume what’s out there, forget the polished IG world and focus on you, your personality, real you, that’s who is building a great following. She began by sharing her every day, what’s going on in her professional life, showing followers her deals and what she did to make those deals and the income attached to that deal. Then came the questions and questions create future posts, you never have a shortage of content ideas because your following will feed the content train for you. Basically, show the world with your actions. Bethany uses social and works the behind-the-scenes actions to benefit her, she uses her pillars, 3-5 of who you are, she focuses on 5 key hashtags that connect her to her current followers and new potential followers and the algorithm works for her. With the pandemic coming to an end, well an end to everyone that has had enough, Bethany is suggesting buyers look at getting back into the condo market, it’s because people are going out again and downtown has all the things you want to do. Not the same for homes, still way too expensive and the approvals are even more difficult to achieve. Bethany doesn’t spend a dollar on traditional ways of advertising and promoting, she use today’s tech and it has worked very well for her. The best way to run your business is to act like you’re not running your business. Shared and Discussed Linkshttps://zapier.comThank You so much Bethany for sharing so much. #233 Fix It Friend the Man the Myth the Legend Jeremy Ross is here to discuss the Handyman Service industry

E

On with the show, Fix It Friend with Jeremy Ross next level of Handyman Services. 6 years in construction after studying and working in the mechanical engineer field, he had enough of the office environment and wanted to get his hands dirty, that is how Fix It Friend began. Of course, Jeremy had some concerns, lack of confidence if he would be accepted into the industry and would establish tradespeople share, we all went through that, that’s the beauty of construction, it truly is a community, and we want to help others. Ultimately every older tradesperson knows they need to pass on these lessons because there are more leaving then entering this industry. Jeremy and his right-hand person Jessica have perfected the Fix It Friend system, from people leaving an inquiry on the website, submitting a scope of work, assessing things, arriving on site and fixing it for them. Most clients are just so happy to have someone there to take care of things. At times there could be a little bit of tension with significant others who either tried to fix it or has no idea how to fix it but Jeremy understands how to involved the clients enough that it becomes a collaborative effort. Over the years Jeremy has built a solid list of tradespeople and other professionals that he can reach out to get 2nd opinion and tradespeople are always willing to share with him, adding more value to his business and his clients. Passion vs Profit comes up again, it’s been gaining a lot of interest and Jeremy brings up some amazing points, it’s an important conversation that everyone in this industry should be having on a daily basis. About a year into Fit It Friend Jeremy had the passion and desire for a workshop, and he came across an opportunity, he called it The Hub TO. Jeremy came across a 6000 sq ft abandoned unit and found the owner, worked out a deal to lease it, he spilt up the place into 11 separate units for a community of makers, a woodworker, a hairdresser, an actor and so on. He’s been able to fill 10 of the 11 units and he’s created something that’s so valuable to everyone in our industry and I suggested you should open another, open it in the west end. What an amazing idea. Towards the end of the show the conversation gets very interesting, we discuss the next generation, parenting failing on making construction an attractive career choice, the construction cap when it comes to making money, immigrants from the 60’s to today providing for their big families, where homes, kids futures, cars, weddings were all paid for by hardworking tradespeople. Please leave a google review for Jeremy and his team and please support his small business.Shared and Discussed Linkshttps://www.kitchenfix.cahttps://www.thehubto.comhttps://www.instagram.com/tc.installations.inc/https://www.instagram.com/marescarpentry/https://www.instagram.com/fabio.andrade51/Thank You so much Jeremy for sharing so much. #232 Kyle Springer from 2X2 Construction is here to discuss running a construction business from the numbers

We open the show with a few shout outs to the many tradespeople that reach out on social, emails and through the industry. Thank you everyone for making the show the huge success it is as we make our way to over 1 million downloads. I have always said it is all because of our guests and the tens of thousands of listeners. Thank you so much. This show is all about the numbers behind running a construction business and Kyle, a 29-year-old has a lot of great advice for the young and old tradespeople in this amazing industry. Kyle a George Brown graduate has been in business for 8-9 years, began his career with a partner, that lasted a couple of years. From there he began 2X2 Construction and it’s a family business. In the beginning Kyle found it difficult to reach out to other trades to ask any question, gain any knowledge in fear of being dismissed. The good people in construction will always make time to reply, focus on the good, ignore the self-centered social media fame driven trades, the renoactors, the tourists. We get right into it. #230 Brock Peel Advanced Property Solutions and Dalton Cousineau SouthPaw Stoneworks are on the show

E

Brock from Advanced Property Solutions is back on the show, check out his first appearance on TCL Show #153, and this time he has brought a new friend, Dalton Cousineau from Southpaw Stoneworks and we are going to be talking Brocks first year as a GC and how Dalton is taking masonry and stone skills to new levels.New Podcast to check out – Michelle Farrugia has been on TCL twice now and she’s doing her own podcast called Cognitive Capital Podcast and find it on iTunes, Spotify and YouTube, great show about finance, real estate and entrepreneurship. We open the show with a few shout outs and then discuss the rising fuel costs but not in a negative, at TCL we present where all these fuel costs are coming from, who has their hands in the cookie jar.On with the show, it begins with Dalton sharing how he began at 5 years of age and he has Lego to thank for his interest in stone work. His grandfather is the one that pushed him, encouraged him, and gave him and hour to pick up the skill. Dalton doesn’t really consider himself a mason, he looks at his skills more of a stonesmith artist. An interesting question comes up, our guests today are mid 20’s, we ask what do you think you will be like 25 years from now? It’s important to take care of your body and mind and maintain a healthy lifestyle is what Dalton shares. Brock shares what his first year as a GC has been and he recently hired a 3rd full time person to the crew. Things are good for him.We discuss the difference between handyman and professional tradesperson, conversation get’s interesting here. Brock and Dalton share an estimate that they were both going to do and in the end they decided to walk away from being involved, basically the client wanted a handyman price but a professional scope of work. They share that the client wanted the detailed work to be done for 75% less than they were quoting, when a client speaks to you that way, walk and walk fast.We bring up Recession Depression talk and discuss how the last two years has been great for construction and we are hoping that everyone in construction has been working just as hard on the business as on the tools, in preparation for a possible recession or even worse the next great depression. Are tradespeople buying fewer tools? Maintaining their current tools? Looking to sell tools they don’t really use? There is something going on and for good reason. The conversation gets gritty with discussing the future of construction and trying to figure out why trades are so quick to want to get higher, bigger without learning all that they can. Where they step into what Brock calls, the “analyse paralysis”. Dalton ends the show with his thoughts on sharing insight to other trades, “fear is tasty” jump in with both feet and make it happen.Shared and Discussed LinksBook - The Bitcoin Standard by Saifedean AmmousBook – Beat the Bank by Larry Bateshttps://www.tremcosealants.com/markets/residential/weather-resistive-barrier-systems/enviro-dri/enviro-dri/Thank you Brock and Dalton. #229 New Tech Wood discussing these new cladding, decking, fencing products with the GM Kosta

E

What a show we have today!! Let’s discuss a new product that has changed the way you consider cladding and decking, we have Constantine (Kosta) Karolidis, the GM and he shares how it all began and how it’s going. But first, a few shout outs and a lovely story about a lazy and talentless renoactor. On with the show. Kosta runs us through this new product to Canada and the many benefits attached to working and designing with it. Kosta literally dove into this business, upon graduating from university, the day after, his Dad asks him, so when are you getting a job? He secures employment with Rinomato Group and from there got into New Tech Wood and like most of us in construction he had a labour shortage trying to build the brand, this was the beginning of Covid and nobody wanted to work, Kosta began asking his university friends, lawyers and programmers in training to help him out. New Tech Wood is in 55 different countries, Canada is the largest growing market right now. With so many colors, styles of cladding, fencing, and decking, use the product inside and out. Kosta also discusses that they can make color match bird houses, chairs, all kinds of furniture and other custom pieces so your entire design can match. Green book talk and we discover the fines attached to making too much noise and a table saw can get as high as 150 Decibels and when you factor in that an ear drum can rupture at 150 DB. One of our fav and constant topics comes up again, millennials and is the stereotype still out there? Kosta shares some insight and of course, Manny and Carlito add to the talk. #228 - 60–69-year-olds Part Five Health Fitness Nutrition and Age of Tradespeople with Dimitri from Pure Motivation Fitness

Part Five –50–59-year-olds. #FitnessFridays with Dimitri Giankoulas Our last show of this series and Dimitri gets right into it. Yes, you still need to be active, but at these ages you need to be careful on the level of active. At this age there are a lot of failing body parts and putting too much stress on joints can create bigger problems, especially since older people don’t heal as quickly. Functional strength is what you are after at this age, learning to improve your mobility from everyday movements, getting up from the floor, lifting from a chair, twisting, and all of this stems from pain. Spinal Hygiene Exercises – A T W Y that Dimitri has discussed on each of these shows. Working with a The TRX System, also known as Total Resistance Exercises, refers to a specialized form of suspension training that utilizes equipment developed by former U.S. Navy SEAL Randy Hetrick. We discuss as one gets older getting to an extreme overweight is dangerous and it should always begin with a full assessment, the data, from there the proper coach can learn the best course of action to achieve their goals. Diet is critical, if you haven’t built up your life with proper healthy details from your 40’s to your 50’s to your 60’s your body isn’t thermo genetically active, it takes your body at that age longer to process the foods. Anyone that is overweight means no carbs for breakfast, it’s like overfilling a half glass of water. Eating carbs for breakfast will only store it and convert it into sugar and it becomes more fat. As for lunch, it’s the same at any age, protein, carb, and fat. For dinner, eliminate the carb and focus on the protein and a little bit of fat. Exercise, Dimitri can tell what you have been doing for decades simply by looking at your side profile, no ass and hamstrings, means weakness in the lower back, means you have not been doing any lower body movements and that needs to change, you will require those two key areas for mobility. The conversation of mental health comes up, at that age mental health is important. Training will help; the injection of dopamine will help. Depression kicks in when people are not happy. Dimitri’s coach would always say, Growth or Decay, which one are you? Reach out to Dimitri and consider getting a coach to help you live a healthy longer life. #227 - 50–59-year-olds Part Four Health Fitness Nutrition and Age of Tradespeople with Dimitri from Pure Motivation Fitness

Part Four –50–59-year-olds. #FitnessFridays with Dimitri Giankoulas This show begins with life stresses, as you get older, you have challenging moments in life, a divorce, separation, loss of a parent or parents, loss of employment and how this can affect your health, mentally and physically. At 50 you need to ask yourself are you doing this for your kids or yourself? Yes, you need to be a role model for your children, but you also have to be selfish, I am 50 now, I want to live a high-quality life for the next 30 plus years, that requires discipline and work. Heart Health, stress contributes to bad heart health, I’ve got all these things happening, life, do I get drinking, taking up vices and hurting myself and others or do I jump into exercise, but where do I begin? It all begins with data, your foundation, where are you at right now? Actual work, begin with Calisthenics, that will allow your body to build, adapt, and grow, again, calisthenics are exercises that use your own body weight. Dimitri discusses proportions, he wants the 50’s to work the back more than the front, 60/40 split and it’s because the world is designed for the back, pull and push actions throughout our day. Adaptation is a beautiful thing for the human body. Take a human without fuel and make it work out, it will have to adapt, and you want the body to adapt and in your older year’s adaptation can become negative, where they wake up and start the day incorrectly, have a cigarette, coffee, donut, that is all adaptation. In your 50’s it’s a wakeup call, you can decide to wake up and live life to the fullest or you can give up and accept this is my life, no matter what, it falls on you to make that decision. Will you conform to life, or will you transform? Dimitri feels the fear at 50 is more detrimental than when you were in your 20’s. In your 20’s, your 30’s, you can make those mistakes, you can have those failures, take your 40’s to fix things and carry on. But in your 50’s it’s easy to have that mindset, I’m old, I can’t do it, my life is ok, I’m fine. Your 50’s doesn’t have to be that way. Move 3X per week for 45 mins, walk the dog, swim, exercise, you have to meal prep Sundays and Wednesdays, and you must journal, make 10 mins of your life belong to you, reflect on you and your life, every day by yourself. You will do this for 90 days and we promise you, your life will change, and you will see weight loss, you will feel better, move better, be a better human being. We wrap up this show discussing breathing, look into 3B Breathing, Brace Before your Breath.Check out his app on Apple and AndroidWhat an amazing show full of truth, pain, fitness, health, exercises and more, I thank you so much Dimitri for sharing so much on your life for our construction lives, educating our listeners on everything to do with your body, mind, and soul. #226 - 40–49-year-olds Part Three Health Fitness Nutrition and Age of Tradespeople with Dimitri from Pure Motivation Fitness

Part Three –40–49-year-olds. #FitnessFridays with Dimitri Giankoulas We begin with mindset, because everything begins with mindset, if you wake up in the morning and the life, your body, your work, you have, isn’t what you want, your mindset will dictate how the rest of the day, that week, that month, that year turns out. In your 40’s your margin for error is smaller and smaller, you can’t continue with the bad habits, those habits will catch up to you and will make your life even more difficult down the line. Sit down and write out what is great about your life and write down what is terrible about your life, be honest, be brutally honest and write it down on paper, that connection to paper will connect your mind to the truth about you. The truth is most people jump into a healthy lifestyle without a plan, they just start and 30 days later they stop, it’s even worse in your 40’s. They just don’t K N O W what and how to do it. They need data about their bodies, they need to know where they are, what their body is telling them, then with that data they can come up with a plan and handle a healthy lifestyle for the rest of their life. The words “I know” are the negative words in your life, the moment you tell yourself I know you brain shuts off and doesn’t want think. Use words like, I will, I am, I shall, I’ll try, these will help you learn and move forward. Training in your 40’s you have to consider mobility, foam rolling, relaxation, lacrosse ball, stretching, yoga, because your body is older, your joints are older, your muscles are weaker and smaller, you have to slowly ramp up as you get back in or continue to train. A good coach will design a program for you based on body type, based on age, and based on muscular dysfunction, most people are afraid of doing any muscle training with the concern of bulking up, in your 40’s you have to really train to bulk up. This issue is this age group focusses on so much cardio, which is great, but they also need the muscle training. Dimitri dives deep into the eating and foods, portions, all kinds of great tips here. #225 – 30–39-year-olds Part Two Health Fitness Nutrition and Age of Tradespeople with Dimitri from Pure Motivation Fitness

Part Two –30–39-year-olds #FitnessFridays with Dimitri Giankoulas It all begins with weight, the scale, is the old way of tracking your gains and losses, it’s truly about body composition, a reflection of tissues in relation to each other, fat and lean muscle tissue. In your 30’s your body begins to change, add life, marriage, kids, work, stress and watch your fitness drop and be pushed to the end of the line, worst thing to do. Food, find out what your body needs in nutrition, for example, Dimitri needs 1.5 grams of protein per his weight, multiply that 1.5 by your weight at 195 pounds and that’s 292 grams of protein per day with his training routine. It’s simple, you eat more than you burn, you gain weight. Opening a business is harder than tracking and training your body for life. Adaptation of the body is a normal process, as you train and reach your goals, your body will get smarter resulting in what got you to lose those first 20 pounds will not work trying to lose those next 20 pounds, you must shock the body to reach those new goals. The biggest killer in North American is metabolic syndrome, a cluster of abdominal obesity, high cholesterol, insulin resistance, and high triglycerides. Avoid all of these and you will live a happy, healthy, quality life. If you don’t exercise, it will affect your sex drive, that is a fact, it will affect your testosterone levels, stress will contribute to lower libido. Alcohol increases in your 30’s because you want to celebrate life’s milestones and most men turn to beer and beer is the worst of the bunch. It's not about what the scale says, not about the weight you are today, it’s about Resting Heart Rate. Calculate your RHR by counting your beats per minute, subtract 70 which is the average, multiply that figure by 60 minutes in an hour, multiply that number by 24 hours in the day and you get your total beats per day, that is how many EXTRA heart beats per day, EXTRA work your heart has to work, these EXTRAS lead to health issues down the road.Check out his app on Apple and AndroidWhat an amazing show full of truth, pain, fitness, health, exercises and more, I thank you so much Dimitri for sharing so much on your life for our construction lives, educating our listeners on everything to do with your body, mind, and soul. #224 - 20–29-year-olds Part One Health Fitness Nutrition and Age of Tradespeople with Dimitri from Pure Motivation Fitness

Dimitri and Manny had this crazy idea, let’s do shows about health, fitness, nutrition and let’s warp up the conversations around age groups.Part One –20–29-year-olds. #FitnessFridays with Dimitri GiankoulasListen to these packed 1-hour shows discussing so much about living a happy, healthier life. Let’s begin, the conversation begins with finding a mentor, your circle of friends and your family will determine what kind of person you become for the rest of your life. Of course, we discuss the 20 somethings digital mind set on food, ordering food, not eating healthy and it all stems from lack of knowledge that most 20’s don’t even know protein, carbs and fats.A lot of people live in reactive states, they use the excuse they don’t have enough time to meal prep, they don’t have enough time to exercise, they use excuses. With this age group they have so many resources for information but along with that comes so much misinformation. Dimitri breaks down the body types and the key exercises and actions each body type should focus on. Dimitri shares the EPOC system, Exercise Post Oxygen Consumption.Dimitri discusses food and what 20-year olds should be eating and what they should be staying away from. Getting into and sticking with exercise and meal plans has always fall to your “why” honestly ask yourself why do you want this? That will lead to your goals and if you understand the mindset the why and the gaols are easy and achievable. The 3 A’s of accountability, you need to Acknowledge can you do this by yourself? You need to Advance, what’s my next step? You need to take Action. Most people don’t do this.Shared and Discussed Linkshttps://www.goodreads.com/book/show/25344.Get_Out_of_My_Life_but_First_Could_You_Drive_Me_Cheryl_to_the_Mall_Check out his app on Apple and AndroidWhat an amazing show full of truth, pain, fitness, health, exercises and more, I thank you so much Dimitri for sharing so much on your life for our construction lives, educating our listeners on everything to do with your body, mind, and soul. #223 Chris Michelin from Treasured Trim Inc. is here to chat Finish Carpentry and the love for the construction industry

E

Open the show with a little talk about the Superbowl and the new Rams logo. Coming from a family full or ironworkers Chris wasn’t interested in that craft, he fell in love with carpentry, building projects in high school trade classes. Chris shares the best thing his previous employer ever taught him; this is a major construction lesson worth listening too. His next story will tug at the heart, thank you Chris for sharing. Of course, we must talk about tools and his line up, as you expect, Chris is a trim carpenter, so you already know what he’s hauling. Quoting is very simple for Chris, and he can do a full walk through in less than 45 mins, that’s windows, doors, baseboard, anything else are considered extras and priced as per. Chris learned the business from small mom and pop shops, old school ladies and gents and those relationships will last a long time and most importantly those types of people in this business never consider any new tradesperson as competition, they welcome the new trades into the community. We get talking about pricing, jigs, breakdown of trim details, jack mitres and so much more. Site conditions, delivery of material, climatizing of material, out of plumb walls, and so much more. Chris shares a story about a new build that’s 15 years old, that’s correct, new build that’s 15 years old. He is installing solid walnut doors that have been on site for 15 years. Manny shares where his dislike for the classic Toronto step bevel trim profile came from, very interesting story. The ongoing mdf/poplar debate continues, and Christ shares a great story while Manny finally reveals the true reason why he dislikes mdf. Towards the end of the show Carlito shares a fun and interesting story that involves the stage production of The Lion King. We wrap up the show discussing the future and retirement and saving for that day you finally hang the tool belt.Shared and Discussed Linkhttps://www.angeloselectric.comhttps://ossingtonhomes.cahttps://www.avenue-marble-restoration.comhttps://www.kncrowder.comhttps://www.aconcordcarpenter.com/cutting-a-jack-miter.htmlhttps://www.instagram.com/vissahomesmarkham/?hl=enhttps://www.instagram.com/marescarpentry/?hl=enhttps://www.instagram.com/vgroupinc/?hl=en Thank you so much Chris for being on the show and sharing so much insight into the art of finish carpentry and more. #222 Kim Piller a Sales Trainer from Sandler Cornerstone Centre for Continued Learning

Kim opens the show with a great assumption about contractors, he thinks we make loads of money, why do we need a sales trainer? This show will have a lot of questions for you as a business owner to ask yourself, prepare the notepad. · Why do you do your business?· How do you build a structure for your business?· Plan and prepare to sell your business one day.· Understanding the Buyers / Sellers Dance.· Don’t try to sell yourself and your service.· Don’t sell the person, they will back away.· Go in with the intension of not getting the work.· Go into meetings realizing you don’t need the business.· How much time should your initial meeting be?· Qualify or disqualify that potential client over a first phone call.· Are you renovating to sell or is this your forever home?· Scheduling meetings make sure everyone is there and there is an agenda, also known as an upfront contract type of meeting· Try to avoid buyer’s remorse· Any confrontational situation, take a time out and walk away, interrupt the pattern· Plan and prepare for your business to expand· Find a good business coach and sales coach· When you present your estimate, give it and be quiet, let the client absorb it and you be quiet. When you finally get a chance to sit down and figure out your selling process, never come to the realization that you “Wing it”. That is the worst thing you can do and unfortunately that is what most businesses do. Your price is your price and when the clients question your price, your profit, your business, don’t defend it, just present it, and stay quiet. Kim wraps things up by explaining, when you as a business owner make the leap to redesign your business, things will get worse before they get better, why it that? You must assess what’s wrong and you must change those faults that way you can get to a better business. #221 Alex from Seal-It is here to discuss sealing all types of exterior surfaces and where the business is going

Alex has had an interesting last decade, studying music, working for lawn care and other sealing companies, hustling and learning, and even considering getting into electrical. 5 years ago, he had a vison of Seal It and has made it what it is now and growing well. He has his crews and is currently searching for more employees if anyone is interested. Alex takes great pride in learning about the proper sealers and applications through speaking to his suppliers and reps and testing these products on actual products. Alex dives deep into the sealing of asphalt, discussing the different types of asphalt and different types of sealers and he doesn’t use big box products that are latex based, he prefers solvent based proper products. Alex also discusses all the products he works with for all his pavers and natural stone applications and always about doing test samples for the client to get a better idea of the finished look. Towards the end of the show, we discuss Alex’s passion for music and to never give it up. All tradespeople should look to other passions in life, if that be art, charities, anything, by giving yourself to other interests it will only make you more passionate about construction. #220 Real Estate and Mortgages learning from yesterday, what’s going on today, and expectations for tomorrow

E

Anthony Caputo from The Caputo Group and Michelle Farrugia are back after nearly two years to discuss the real estate and mortgage markets. This is one show for the books, it was all business from the very beginning, and they share so much incredible insight into what is really going on today, what we learned two years ago and what to plan for tomorrow. We even shift gears and discuss crypto, nft’s and the metaverse. You want to listen to show, take notes and prepare to be educated. Toronto just surpassed Vancouver, two years ago the average sale in Toronto was just over 800K, today it is just over 1 million and signs are only indicating this is going up. The government needs to streamline the permit process so we as builders can start and complete projects faster, permits are a huge stumbling block for clients. Things have gotten to the point where you have to pair up with someone in the purchase of a home to meet all the financial requirements, get a co-signer, it’s time to get creative and not to worry about the what if things don’t work out, sell the property and now you will be eligible to purchase on your own, bottom line, start. There is a whole new digital landscape happening right now, young entrepreneurs are doing the meta, the crypto and it’s the new stock market but people need to understand these gains that people are sharing are feeding into the class division that social media has already created and continues to feed. Check your social media ego at the door and stay focused. People are overbuying, overspending, it’s human nature to want instant gratification and that is hurting your financial health and wealth. You must stop your instincts to want “it” now and focus on the planning, the prepping and understand your goals, your realistic goals and forget keeping up with the social media joneses, delay your gratification. Anthony shares, if you’re young and thinking about moving out of mom and pop, don’t, save up money, buy a rental property and build equity. Michelle shares, get a co-sign over adding more to the down payment, that co-sign is way more valuable. Yes banks and B lenders are checking your digital footprint, they are googling you, they are looking for those skeletons and they will find them. Thank You so much Anthony and Michelle for joining the show two years later and sharing so much more great insight about properties, real estate, loans, mortgages and more. #219 Larry Serpa of Key Tile Co from Vancouver is on the show talking everything to do with tiling and stone

Larry literally began by being thrown right into the pool with no swimming lessons, working for his dad and brother, they gave him a caulking gun and a tube of silicon and told him to caulk the shower, never did it before, was never shown how to do it and once completed his work was complimented and that was the beginning. Soon after that he’s asked to grout, no training, no instructions, you will figure it out is what his brother said. He did a great job and then was given the job, Grout Bitch, for a year, just grouting. Larry shares a typical story about the “Jeremy’s” out there, how they get paid and then disappear and reappear once they need more money. Being a tradesperson is a lot like being a professional athlete, what sets the two apart? The discipline. Larry and Manny discuss the health of our tradespeople and ignoring the signs from your body, take care of the one and only body tool. Larry has always delt with being the new guy, meeting clients that question his skill level, he has always held his own and presented his knowledge and his skill set to the point that new clients feel confident with him. After working for his dad for so long and handling his scope, plus paperwork, scheduling and so much more of the business, Larry felt he needed a vacation, but his dad wouldn’t allow that because it became a question, well who will handle all these extra things? This was the beginning of the end of working with family and going on his own. After 6 months of traveling and avoiding getting back into the business and work, Larry was offered a 10,000 square foot project and he took it over his dad, besides, his dad didn’t want the job. That job cemented Larry’s new business and mindset, but it created tension between him and his dad and Larry shares the great Portuguese saying his dad compared it too, in English and in Portuguese, about a bakery. Larry shares a great saying when he decided to pick up and move to another city and start all over, “you can’t google experience”. Followed by cold calling and more cold calling and more cold calling and he didn’t stop until he got the chance to prove himself. That’s how you google experience. Larry hustled, he worked for someone, made a mistake on that first job, owned the mistake and carried on but this employer didn’t have enough work for Larry, around the same time another GC was asking if Larry would work for them, Larry was a upstanding tradesperson and made sure that his current employer was well aware of what was going on. Eventually Larry left the first employer and began working for the new GC and that was the very beginning of Key Tile Co and he has never needed to look back. #218 Behzad from Aria Build is here to discuss being a 25-year-old General Contractor of luxury homes

We have a new segment to share on the show, Building Books where we share a book that we have read and our listeners should consider reading, on today’s show we discuss Think and Grow Rich, Little Red Hen, Richest Man in Babylon, and today’s feature book is The Boy, the Mole, the Fox, and the Horse. Please consider expanding your reading, it will only help you and your business. 25-year-old GC Behzad of Aria Build is our guest, moved to Canada when he was 11 years old, didn’t know any English and is family had plenty of struggles and hardship. At his parent’s request Behzad studied Electrical Engineering, graduated but didn’t follow a career in it, construction was calling him. His construction career began by doing little odd jobs here and there, installing a dishwasher, cleaning up job sites, work he found through Kiji, that gave him the confidence to begin to do smaller projects. Of course, he learned the hard way and lost money on those earlier jobs, join the construction club. Behzad began working with his brother and that worked for a few years while he was still finishing up his education. Eventually where Behzad wanted to take the business didn’t line up with his brothers plan so they parted ways and he began Aria Build all on his own. One of the key things that Behzad shares, when he got started and made a mistake, he would document that mistake in a journal, and he continues to write in that journal and he learns from his mistakes and never makes them again. It's refreshing to hear such a young tradesperson who has struggled, learned from their mistakes and has improved and built a solid business and continues to improve with each new project. Keep up the awesomeness brother. #217 AVAS & Concepts Inc with Dennis Costa discussing Home Automation and Integration

E

Let’s get right into home automation and integration with Dennis from AVAS and Concepts, it all began with Dennis taking broken speakers out of the back trash of a local stereo shop, that led to him fixing the speakers and getting a job at the store. From there, Dennis was offered a job at Rogers Cable with the sub-contractor Trinity Cable. It was a great opportunity for Dennis, able to be one on one with homeowners, learning how to communication with clients and solving problems. Dennis always wants to be the first one at the beginning of the project, there are way too many things to consider after most of the work has been performed. We discuss all kinds of electronics and how to proceed with all of this tech. WiFi access points, understanding the home and working around radiant floors, so many building details can affect the installation of home integration. Working with Control 4 Dennis discusses how to assemble all the apps into one app and full integrated on your smart phone. We discuss picture quality, should you stream, hard drive or buy blue ray and 4K? Multi room audio and video. So many conversations. Regarding EMF Electric and magnetic fields (EMFs) are invisible areas of energy, often referred to as Radiation, that are associated with the use of electrical power and various forms of natural and man-made lighting. ... Ionizing: high-level radiation which has the potential for cellular and DNA damage. What is a Faraday cage used for? A Faraday cage is used as a protective shield against the electromagnetic radiation coming from the external environment, or it prevents electromagnetic energy radiated from the internal components from escaping the cage. These protective shields are used in different kinds of electronic and electrical equipment.Shared and Discussed Linkshttps://www.control4.comhttps://www.healthline.com/health/shungitehttps://www.sony.ca/en/electronics/tv/t/televisionshttps://www.platinumtools.com/products/punchdown/tools/xpress-jack-punchdown-tool-xpressjack/Thank you so much Dennis for being on the show and sharing so much insight into the home integration industry. #216 D’lusso Tile with the OG Frank Dilorenzo, his son Joey and the new kid Jason Rita from MCM Stone & Tile

E

What a show! Are you easily offended by the truth about construction, then this show is for you because you need to be woken up about the realties in construction and Frank, Joey and Jay say it as it is and TCL welcomes everything said on this show.Huge shout out to JD Hellinger of @hellingerconstruction he reached out asking me to do more shows about safety, and I will be doing more. He recently had a jobsite accident; a split second can change your life. We want to wish him the best, we wish him a lot of hope to recover and your fellow tradebrothers and tradesisters are here to support you brother, all the best JD.Let’s begin, 45 years of construction experience, let that sink in, 1977 is when it all began, Frank is a very young 59, will soon be 60 and he credits his kids and the young trades for giving him his second wind, he’s back at it and loves it. He’s going to share so much on this show, you don’t want to miss everything he has to offer. Joey at a very young age, 7, would go to work with his Dad and learn how to do things properly. Jay was taught by his Dad, a few years older than Frank, Jay was brought into the mix by a negative situation where Jay was the saving grace and the 3 of them never looked back. It has been a while since we have done a tile show and what better tradespeople than the 3 gentlemen on the show today. Having a show with different generations of trades allows us to discuss how things are today, how they were yesterday and what to expect in the future and everyone here is brutally honest. First up! Cleanliness!! They can’t express how important staying clean, working clean, keeping the site clean, your tools clean, your tiles clean, everything clean, that is the number one lesson for any tradesperson especially tile setter. We discuss clips and a lot of interesting points are brought up. Finally, we discuss how important pails are and how so many younger trades will just throw pails out without a construction care in the world, Frank goes as far as labeling his pails, the year he got it, yes, the year and a small “F” somewhere nobody can see and he even goes further and uses wine pails, the ones with the lip so it’s easier to pull apart. You will never look at pencils the same way after this show, thank you Frank and I will try this. Frank should be teaching millennial happiness courses and change the industry mindset one trade at a time. There is so much you just must listen to this whole show several times. Stick around for the 12 questions of construction because you do not want to miss the replies on this one.Share and Discussed Linkshttps://backwoodscigars.com/age-gating/https://www.dannyswineandbeer.com/products/plastic-fermenting-pail-with-lidhttps://ima.caThank you so much Frank, Joey and Jay for taking the time this Saturday morning to speak with me and sharing your stories, your drive, your passion, never loose it brothers, we wish you all the best and hope to speak to you soon, you guys have to return to the show and continue this conversation.
