After Jacob rebukes him, God strikes Sherem with a fatal illness. Sherem renounces what he taught before. It’s one of the great paradoxes of our time: individuals who claim that God does not exist often spend immense amounts of time, energy, and even money trying to refute Him. Some go so far as to write books, give lectures, and debate endlessly against a Being they insist is no more real than a myth. From a theological perspective, this aligns strikingly with Romans 1, that truth isn’t merely denied; it’s actively suppressed. The human heart, made in the image of God, cannot help but respond to Him, whether in worship or in rebellion. Philosophically, this obsession with disproving God betrays more than skepticism. In fact, it suggests an unease, a disquiet in the soul that perhaps, just perhaps, what they reject is actually true. After all, we do not rage against things we find truly irrelevant. The question must be asked: are these arguments born from intellectual inquiry, or are they the conscience’s attempt to silence the God it cannot escape? Based on my previous natural law episode, today I look at possible traces of theonomy throughout history. Theonomy is often accused of being novel or modern, originating with 20th Century theologians such as Bahnsen, North, and Rushdoony. But it seems that an argument could be made that theonomy is much older than that. Were there Christians during the Roman Empire that advocated for greater conformity to the Old Testament civil laws? Was even medieval Ireland influenced by the Mosaic law code? This episode is part 10 in a series going through the story of the Book of Mormon.In Jacob chapter 3, Jacob continues his sermon against the people of Nephi for their pride, greed, and polygamy. I discuss a little about the polygamy issue I raised in the last part. Jacob also warns the Nephites that, if they don't repent, they could end up with darker skin than the Lamanites. Apparently, in the ancient Americas, sin affects skin. And darker skin is a curse from God.Jacob chapter 4 talks about how the brass plates record many clear prophecies about Jesus: the atonement, that He is the "only begotten Son" and that Abraham and Isaac are a picture of God the Father and Jesus. Because the Jews in captivity became stiffnecked against the clear prophecies that even the prophets before them received, God took away these clear prophecies and gave them words harder to understand.The LDS church argues that Joseph Smith restored the true church from apostasy. Pray for spiritual breakthrough with faith, just as:Hezekiah prayed for healing and was granted 15 more years of life.Hannah prayed for a child and gave birth to the prophet Samuel.The early church prayed for Peter, and God miraculously freed him from prison.We must ask in faith. Don’t pray for rain and forget your umbrella.3. Fast for Dependence on GodFasting isn’t about manipulating God—it’s about recognizing our need for Him.Daniel 10:12-13 – Daniel fasted and prayed for 21 days. His prayer was heard immediately, but spiritual warfare delayed the answer.Fasting strengthens our dependence on God and aligns our hearts with His will.4. Worship While You WaitEven in difficulty, worship is key to breakthrough.Acts 16:25-26 – Paul and Silas were imprisoned, yet they prayed and worshipped. Suddenly, an earthquake broke their chains.Worship shifts our focus from the problem to the Provider.5. Trust God’s TimingWaiting isn’t easy, but God is always working.Hebrews 13:5 – “I will never leave you nor forsake you.”Romans 8:28-29 – “For those who love God, all things work together for good…”When we pray, fast, and worship while waiting, we draw closer to God—whether or not we receive the breakthrough we expect.Final Thoughts: What’s Your Next Step?Taking up your cross means surrender, trust, and obedience.If you want to save your life, you must lose it by giving it fully to Jesus.The greatest breakthrough isn’t getting what we want—it’s becoming who God calls us to be.What do you need God to do in your life? What breakthrough are you seeking? Surrender to Jesus, trust Him fully, and watch what He does.

Is the way we have seen, trained, and determined someone to be spiritual derived from Scripture or from mysticism? A lot of the popular examples of someone being spirit filled points us to people who have extraordinary experiences and witness supernatural signs and wonders. These are a sign that one has a deep relationship with God. And that relationship developed with continued personal supernatural experiences. These are the starting points to the relationship and are continually sought after to maintain or develop that relationship. These personal experiences are how people gauge they are intimate with God or, as people also say spiritual/spirit filled and led (aka are spiritual).But what does Scripture say about spirituality? What does the Spirit lead one to do when they are filled by Him?
