Samantha Power on The Power of Idealism
Samantha Power started as an outsider, a war correspondent who wrote impassioned pieces for the Washington Post, Economist, and others about the failings of the American government on an international stage. That voice led to her Pulitzer Prize winning book "A Problem from Hell": America and the Age of Genocide and earned her a job in the cabinet of President Barack Obama helping to shape the very policies she was once a harsh critic of. Samantha has served both on the National Security Council and as an Ambassador to the UN. Most recently she was nominated as USAID Administrator. She is also the author of the New York Times bestsellers Chasing the Flame: One Man's Fight to Save the World and The Education of an Idealist: A Memoir, which is now in paperback and was named one of the best books of 2019 by the New York Times, Washington Post, Economist, Vanity Fair, National Public Radio, and TIME. What I love about Samantha's story and her wisdom from navigating the halls of power, is her winding path to get there. In this episode, we get into: How being an outsider, starting something new, or feeling like an imposter can help us to deconstruct the world around us How being mission driven can help focus and motivate your work The importance of setting modest goals instead of seemingly intangible ones. World changing happens in the smallest bites. The X test: Using "if all I get from doing X, will it be worth it?" and so much more Enjoy! Extreme Explorer Mike Horn on Pushing the Limits
Today on the show I have a dear friend and arguably the foremost living Explorer on the planet: Mike Horn. He's faced extreme temperatures crossing the North pole during winter and climbed many of the world's highest peaks such as Gasherbrum I and II, Broad Peak, Makalu; all without oxygen. Among his many adventures, Mike also works to share his knowledge, passion and experience with others through his youth mentorship programs, coaching, and media. In this episode we get into: how to inspire and motivate yourself how to dream big and the one thing we need to achieve big things in the midst of hardship how to persevere through what others might think is impossible the changes Mike has seen in our planet as he's circumnavigated it almost 30 times and so much more Enjoy! Emmanuel Acho on Uncomfortable Conversations
In the wake of George Floyd's murder in 2020, Emmanuel Acho recognized that Black and White people simply do not understand each other in America and he wanted to use his voice to do something about it. So he launched a video series, Uncomfortable Conversations with a Black Man. His goal? Open a dialog on topics we've been afraid to talk about: racism, privilege, cultural appropriation, and more. That show exploded with over 70 millions views, widespread media coverage, and led to his must-read NYT best-selling book by the same name. Emmanuel studied sports management and was drafted into the NFL while earning his masters in Sports Psychology in the off-season. Not long after retiring from the NFL, Emmanuel started his broadcasting career at ESPN where he was the youngest national football analyst, and named a 2018 Forbes Under 30 selection. In this episode we get into: Emmanuel's upbringing from growing up as a first generation American to Nigerian immigrant parents, to attending an all white affluent grade school, to his career as a pro NFL football player to today. Design Systems That Fuel You with Srinivas Rao
Whether you know it or not, there are a whole host of things that either stimulate or obstruct our productivity and creativity. Where we work, the people we see, the equipment we use, the sounds we hear, even the information we consume. The good news is that we can develop systems that can help us harness and fuel our creativity instead of diminish it. Today on the show, I'm sharing a few of my favorite lessons from a recent class by Srinivas Rao that helps us to look at how our environments are either helping or hurting our creativity. Srini is the bestselling author of The Art of Being Unmistakable and An Audience of One: Reclaiming Creativity for Its Own Sake. His work has been featured in Forbes, Inc, The NYTimes, Business Insider, and The Blaze. You might also know him as the host of The Unmistakable Creative podcast where he's interviewed more than 700 people from every walk of life. 12 Secrets for Unlocking Your Most Creative Work
A lot of my breakthrough creative thoughts come to me when least expected. I've also learned from an entire life in the trenches as an artist what DOESN'T contribute to them (abusing myself, bad head space, partying too much), but more importantly, what does. I've learned that creative inspiration is something that can be directly CULTIVATED by putting yourself in a fertile environment. When Preparation Meets Opportunity with Paul Ninson
One of my favorite things about the community we have around this show is the ongoing conversation not just between my guests, but with you, the listener. Whether it's through my email newsletter, social media, or texting, the community we've built over 10+ years is real. This year, many of you asked for guests who are on their way up. Folks who have put what they've learned into action. Well, I could not think of a better show to bring in the New Year with one such guest, Paul Ninson. Paul is a documentary photographer and aspiring Cinematographer, born in Kumasi, Ghana. He's also a long time listener of the show. Having discovered this podcast and CreativeLive as a curious and budding photographer, Paul decided to sell his phone to buy his first camera. That was just three years ago. His path from then to now is incredibly inspirational, including a chance meeting of Brandon Stanton of Humans of New York in Ghana, connecting with yours truly, and eventually making his way to his dream school at the International Center of Photography in New York where he was awarded the Director's Fellowship and George Moss Merit Scholarship. To date, Paul's work has been featured in the World Photography Organization, and exhibited at the British Council. He was one for the official state photographers for the HRH The Prince of Wales and the HRH The Duchess of Cornwall's visit to Ghana. He has worked for various NGOs and organizations including Discovery Learning Alliance, Ark Foundation, United Nations, and many many more. Very excited for you to hear Paul's story and I hope you get a chance to view his work. You can find him at @pninson on instagram or paulninson.com. Enjoy + Happy New Year! Overcome Creative Obstacles
One of the most popular questions I get is how to overcome the creative obstacles that are in the world. Whether they are out there, or within us, we've told ourselves a bunch of stories of why we can't create. I thought it would be very helpful, based on listener requests, to do an episode on creative obstacles. When you're feeling stuck, recognize you're not waiting to be able to create, you're waiting to FEEL LIKE creating. That's a very different thing. The trap is that we often don't feel like creating until we're well under way. If you wait for the feeling to come before you start, you're going to be sitting there waiting. So when I look to figure out what is actually blocking me from creating, I think about these three things: * Am I waiting for someday or that perfect moment? how can I start now? what's one thing I can do to move me forward? * Where is my time going? How can I structure my time such that realign schedule with my ambitions and values * How can I work in microbursts and reset my expectations on what I can create in a given moment. Ready to start moving forward? I'll see you over in the episode. Enjoy! Today's episode is brought to you by CreativeLive. The Art of Practice with Christoph Niemann
My guest today is the one and only, the inimitable, Christoph Niemann. If you're not familiar with his work, he's an amazing illustrator, artist, author and animator. I became familiar with his work from the covers of The New Yorker, National Geographic, and New York Times Magazine. Christoph's art has been subject to numerous museum retrospectives. And you might have seen him on the Netflix show Abstract where they did a 45 minute documentary on him that is just spectacular. Christoph has drawn live from the Venice Art Biennale, the Olympic Games in London, and he has sketched the New York City Marathon — while actually running it. He created The New Yorker's first Augmented Reality Cover as well as a hand drawn 360 degree VR animation for the magazine's US Open issue. Clients include Hermés, Google, LAMY, and The Museum of Modern Art. Suffice it to say, he is a legend. In this conversation get get into: how all the struggles we go through as creatives is so similar there is real power and support in sharing the solutions in our communities how to not be intimidated by trends and how to manage social media as a test ground but not getting attached to how many likes we get how being our harshest critic is required to making our best work and so much more. Enjoy!
Courage, Creativity and The Power of Change with Beth Comstock
As we come into the New Year, it's often a time of reflection and looking forward. Thinking about the things we want to change and recommit to goals. Whether you have big audacious goals or just want to do something seemingly small, these things take a huge amount of courage and creativity. Which leads us to today's episode with Beth Comstock. Beth Comstock's mission is to understand what's next, navigate change and help others do the same. By cultivating a habit of seeking out new ideas, people and places, she built a career path from storyteller to chief marketer to corporate Vice Chair. Beth spent nearly three decades at GE until December 2017. As Vice Chair of Business Innovation and previously Chief Marketing Officer, she led efforts to accelerate new growth, develop digital and clean-energy futures, seed new businesses and enhance brand value. As President of Integrated Media at NBC Universal, Beth oversaw TV ad revenue and new digital efforts, including the early development of hulu.com. Beth came to studio not too long ago to teach a class at CreativeLive on this exact topic, and I wanted to share a few of my favorite lessons that helps us: Become a changemaker by leading with imagination. Gain the courage to develop and defend new creative ideas. Unearth new ideas but apply strategy to bring them to fruition. Make room for discovery and how to apply storytelling concepts to make your vision into reality. Remember, the world will never be slower than it is right now. So it's never a better time to ignite your ideas into reality. Enjoy! Today's episode is brought to you by CreativeLive. And conversely, if you have only a little talent, you still have a chance to stand out. What's the common equalizer? Hard work. In this quick little episode, we explore where the rubber meets the road. And spoiler alert: Talent alone isn't enough. Enjoy! Today's episode is brought to you by CreativeLive. The Driving Force Behind Every Creative Pro
Fact: creativity is a team sport. Yes, the actual act of making the work is sometimes a solo activity (drawing, writing, editing a film, etc) but the real driving force behind every creative pro is their community: their clients, collaborators, peers and the rest of the humans in the complex web of symbiotic relationships that give us inspiration, support and (ultimately) an income. Creativity cannot live in a vacuum. We depend on each other, like the members of any other ecosystem. If you want your work recognized, gain more opportunities, make connections or become more connected to your industry, this episode is for you. Enjoy! Benjamin Hardy: Break Free from Self-Limiting Beliefs
Dr. Benjamin Hardy is an organizational psychologist and bestselling author of Willpower Doesn't Work. His blog has been read by over 100 million people and has been featured on Forbes, Fortune, CNBC, Cheddar, Big Think and many others. When I first tuned in to his work he was the #1 writer on medium.com, where he developed a significant audience around his interests. His new book, Personality Isn't Permanent, which we talk about today opens up a discussion around the popular misconception that the role of personality plays in our daily life and our future. The historical narrative that personality is fixed and it is something you "discover" is filled with fallacies, as Dr. Hardy's scientific approach to this book shows how daily intentions create our future selves. We also talk about: Why personality tests don't work (and can often reaffirm false narratives) What you can do to get out of beliefs around your "fixed" personality How to stop lingering on the past- whether it's a past success or a catastrophic failure Designing an identity to create your future self Reframing trauma Can't wait for you to dig. My Daily Gratitude Practice
As you probably know, I'm a huge believer that so much of 'THE GAME' is mental. Stress, fear, anxiety, and our natural negativity bias is always ready beat us down. One of the most powerful tools in my toolbox to harness positivity in a seemingly tough situation is a daily gratitude practice. As we head into Thanksgiving here in the states, in the middle of a pandemic and everything else, I wanted to dig into the archives and re-share my personal practice. In this episode I share the exact practice I use every morning to re-center my mindset. Join me if you're curious, and use it to jump start your own. If you'd like to fast forward directly to my guided practice, skip to about 7 minutes into the episode. Enjoy! Today's episode is brought to you by CreativeLive. Tiny Changes, Remarkable Results with James Clear
James Clear is a writer, speaker and the bestselling author of one of my absolute favorite books, Atomic Habits. His work on decision-making, continuous improvement and personal development has been instrumental in my life, but it's his focus on habits that fires me up the most. If you've read Creative Calling or listened to this show in the past, you've probably heard me describe the creative pyramid. On the bottom of that pyramid is mindset, and at the top are your goals. The thing that connects your mindset and your vision for what you want in life? That's your habits. In this conversation James helps us focus on the power of habits to foster success, and more importantly, fulfillment. Failing to Succeed
One of the most powerful understandings I've internalized over the past decade hosting this show is this: the world's top performers, entrepreneurs and creators often feel like they are imposters to their own lives. Operating at the edge of their ability and constantly failing forward comes with the challenge of overcoming self-doubt and imposter syndrome. The good news? It's normal to doubt yourself. Even in areas where I consider myself highly proficient there are still moments in the unknown where I question whether I have what it takes to bring my vision into reality. Remember, every creative effort contains the seeds of a future success. Just like going to the gym, the more you train your emotional and mental strengths to endure the feeling of uncomfortable self-doubt and failure, the more you will persist in pursuing your dreams. Celebrate the Small Wins
When you feel like you're running in place, not making progress, feeling overwhelmed becomes the norm. Often we gloss over smaller accomplishments, focusing on grand milestones out in the distance. We are biologically wired to focus on the negative, but that doesn't mean you can't take control and flip the script. By celebrating small wins we begin to rewire our brains to recognize the progress we are making. In this episode, I share my experience learning how to celebrate daily, weekly, and monthly wins and why this practice transformed my mindset. Momentum comes from the thoughts that we say to ourselves. Enjoy! Today's episode is brought to you by CreativeLive. The Art of Done
Your conscious mind is a critic. If you rely on it too much while you're working, you'll struggle to make progress. In this episode, I share a simple, repeatable process to finishing work you start without self-judgement weighing you down. The idea here isn't to win the next high praise for your best work, it's about taking whatever action you can, and repeat. Having your work recognized will come in due time. For now, the task is to continue honing the craft. Finish what you start. Choose action over intellect. Enjoy! Today's episode is brought to you by CreativeLive. Harness Kindness as Your Hidden Super Power with Adrienne Bankert
Kindness is a super power and a breath of fresh air in a world where negativity and hardship aren't hard to find. Yet what my guest Adrienne Bankert found, is kindness isn't merely about being nice. A mindset of kindness ripples into a staggering amount of personal fulfillment, growth, and empowerment. Adrienne Bankert is an Emmy and Edward R. Murrow Award-winning correspondent for ABC News, Good Morning America, World News Tonight, and Nightline. She reported live from Chiang Rai, Thailand, during the rescue of thirteen boys and their soccer coach as the world watched the historic rescue. Her compelling interviews from guests that range from wounded warriors to celebrities including Lady Gaga, Bradley Cooper, Dwayne Johnson, Ryan Reynolds, and more have gained widespread attention. Adrienne saw firsthand how the power of kindness can work in her career. Uncertain about where she would go next and determined to pursue her dream of being on national TV, she took a chance and landed a Los Angeles reporting job. Her new boss told her it was her reputation for kindness throughout her career that was the key to her being hired. Just a few months later, that opened the door to the biggest break of her life. In this episode we dive into: How to make kindness a habit to bring you more peace, inspiration, and impact. James Nestor: The Lost Art of Breath
One of the most essential functions for health and wellbeing of a human is just breathing. Breathing air. In and out. In fact, we do this 25,000 times a day. Yet, as today's guest James Nestor will share, a wide majority of us have lost the ability to breathe correctly wreaking havoc on our health. But all is not lost. Modern science agrees, that even the smallest adjustments in the way we inhale and exhale can have dramatic downstream positive effects. James Nestor is a journalist who has travelled the world to find out what is going on with our breathing. He has written for Outside, Scientific American, The Atlantic, Dwell, The New York Times, and many other publications. I first discovered his work with his book Deep: Freediving, Renegade Science, and What the Ocean Tells Us about Ourselves which was a finalist for the 2015 PEN/ESPN Award for Literary Sports Writing, an Amazon Best Science Book of 2014, and more. What James has learned about the breathe to help with anxiety, asthma, sleep apnea, physical & mental performance, even rejuvenate internal organs, reverse auto-immune diseases, strengthening the immune system and so much more. Create Before You Consume
Too many of us start our days consuming instead of creating: browsing the web, watching TV, whatever. We become audience members and critics. Our thoughts get sucked into what other people are doing, how well we're doing it, and the response they're getting from thew world. This is super toxic and a surefire way to undermine your creative mindset. Creating before consuming is a seemingly minor shift that will have a profound effect on your daily outlook and creative capacity. So the consider this your friendly reminder: Create first. Make something, no matter how small. Enjoy! Today's episode is brought to you by CreativeLive. Stephan Moccio: Heal the Soul, Restore the Calm
This episode is a full circle moment. I met Stephan Moccio on the internet some years ago when I would often see him name in my social feeds. It was not long before I started paying attention to him and his work too. Come to find out he's a Grammy Award winning and Academy Award-nominated composer. He's written global hits for Céline Dion, The Weekend, Miley Cyrus and Seal. Now he's recently released his debut piano solo album, Tales of Solace. Born in Canada, as a three year old, Moccio began his training in classical music at The Royal Conservatory of Music. Post signing a global deal with Universal Music, he moved his studio to Los Angeles, where he currently resides. Intertwined in our conversation, Stephan plays his some pieces off his new album on his custom upright Yamaha piano. In creating the album he says, "I needed to recalibrate musically and personally. Solitude and quiet, in a noisy world, are elements I have been craving for a long time. Naturally, it made sense to engage in an intimate conversation between myself and the instrument which has been faithful to me my entire life. Strip it down... one person, in one room, with one instrument." Enjoy! Today's episode is brought to you by CreativeLive. Jasmine Star: How to Grow Your Community
Just a few days ago, my book Creative Calling hit it's one year anniversary. And what a year it's been. One of my favorite things about the last year, has been the growing community pursuing their own calling and rallying behind creativity. Community is critical for support, feedback, opportunities, and of course, celebrating those wins. Yet, it's one of the most overlooked areas for creating success in any field. So it seemed fitting to share this conversation I had last fall with my good friend Jasmine Star on cultivating our own personal community. If you're not familiar with her work, let me catch you up. Jasmine Star is a photographer and a business strategist. After quitting law school, she picked up a camera and built a huge internationally recognized + respected photography business. Over the past few years, Jasmine has expanded her business to help entrepreneurs build a brand and market it on social media. What I love about this conversation is Jasmine really taps into many of the commonly asked questions around cultivating community such as: How to navigate social situations as an introvert How to create real personal connection The importance of consistency and continuing to show up How to break through fear of what other people think and so much more. Today's episode is part of a companion class for Creative Calling. If you missed the class, it's available for FREE for anyone who purchased a book. The Secret to Getting Unstuck
Here's the secret to getting out of a rut, to getting unstuck and breaking through that wall: Make. More. Stuff. No matter what's blocking you creatively, your best bet is always to just turn up the volume. MAKE. Can't make something good? Make something bad. Make something ugly. Make something crazy doesn't make sense. It doesn't matter what you make, only that you're taking action. Remember, you can't think your way out of a rut. You must do.
