S1 Ep 55A Very Simple Explanation Of The Four Stages Of Labor During Childbirth | 55
Listen in on this recording from an IG Live where Trish breaks down the four stages of labor. The four stages of labor are:Stage One: This stage is the longest and can last up to 20 hours or more for first-time mothers. During this stage, the cervix gradually opens (dilates) to allow the baby to pass through the birth canal. Stage one has three sub-stages: early labor, active labor, and transition.Stage Two is the pushing stage when the baby is born. During this stage, mama pushes to help the baby move through the birth canal and out of the body.Stage Three: This stage begins after the baby is born and ends with the delivery of the placenta (also known as the afterbirth).Stage Four is the period immediately after the delivery of the placenta, where the mother's body changes to return to its pre-pregnancy state and the mother and baby bond. This stage typically lasts about one to two hours.Resources: Join the Calm Mama Membership: labornursemama.com/cmsLeave a review and include your Instagram username for a chance to win our monthly raffle!Grab a Free Pregnancy/Postpartum Checklist BundleConnect w/ Trish: On InstagramOn FacebookOn YouTubeOn Pinterest On TikTokFor more pregnancy & birth education, subscribe to The Birth Experience on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you listen to podcasts.Next Steps with LNM:If you are ready to invest in your pregnancy & postpartum journey, you are in the right place. S1 Ep 54How to Prepare Your Fur Baby for Your New Baby: Dog Meets Baby | 54
Introducing a baby to a dog can be a delicate process, and it's important to take it slow and ensure both the baby and the dog are comfortable and safe. Today we talk with Dominika here are some tips to help introduce your baby to your dog:Join the Calm Mama Membership: labornursemama.com/cmsLeave a review and include your Instagram username for a chance to win our monthly raffle!Tip 1: Start to prepare the dog for new items coming into the home and experiences before the baby comes home.Tip 2: Prepare the dog for alone time and separation from you at specific times, work from different rooms, and install a baby gate to separate them, so they don't blame the baby, start small, teaching them it's okay; I always come back, creating a new routine for off-limit spaces like a nursery.Tip 3: Planning the introduction after the baby is born; having the baby on the floor is unsafe, and keeping the baby in your arms or a crib and the dog on a leash or behind a gate is best.Tip 4: Prepare for future car rides: think about how you safely have a dog and a baby in the car.Tip 5: Dog training is priceless, now is the time to brush up on training.More From Dog Meets Babyhttp://bit.ly/3iV4cUp - Dog Meets Baby websitehttp://bit.ly/3DbBfdP - Dog Meets Baby courseshttp://bit.ly/3iZ9j5N - Dog Meets Baby InstagramResources: Grab a Free Pregnancy/Postpartum Checklist BundleConnect w/ Trish: On InstagramOn FacebookOn YouTubeOn Pinterest On TikTokFor more pregnancy & birth education, subscribe to The Birth Experience on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you listen to podcasts.Next Steps with LNM:If you are ready to invest in your pregnancy & postpartum journey, you are in the right place. S1 Ep 50Open Glottis VS Closed Glottis Pushing – Determining Which is More Powerful? Holding Your Breath or Not! | 50
During childbirth, the second stage of labor is the pushing stage. On this episode of the birth experience, we are chatting all about whether or not you should hold your breath while pushing. (I break down all things pushing in my free pushing class during The Fearless Birth Experience)Join the Calm Mama Membership: labornursemama.com/cmsLeave a review and include your Instagram username for a chance to win our monthly raffle!Back in the day, we instructed everyone to lay on their backs, grab behind their knees (I affectionately call your knee-pit) and hold their breath while I (your labor nurse) counted to ten. What we used to do during pushing isn't bad; it just might not be best for you or all women. And we did it the same way for everyone.Pushing can involve either an open or closed glottis. The glottis is the opening between the vocal cords in the larynx.Open glottis pushing involves taking a deep breath and exhaling forcefully while keeping the vocal cords open. This technique allows for more air to be expelled and can provide a greater amount of pressure to push the baby through the birth canal. Open glottis pushing may also reduce the risk of pelvic floor injury.Closed glottis pushing, on the other hand, involves holding one's breath and contracting the abdominal muscles while closing the vocal cords. This technique can create more pressure, but it also reduces the amount of oxygen getting to the baby and may increase the risk of pelvic floor injury or damage to the perineum. Some studies suggest that open glottis pushing may be associated with shorter pushing times, less perineal trauma, and a lower risk of instrumental delivery than closed glottis pushing. However, the optimal pushing technique may depend on various factors, such as maternal fatigue, the baby's size, and the baby's position in the birth canal. It's important to note that both open and closed glottis-pushing techniques have potential benefits and risks. You should do your due diligence by taking a full comprehensive birth class and then listening to your gorgeous body during birth.Resources: Grab a Free Pregnancy/Postpartum Checklist BundleConnect w/ Trish: On InstagramOn FacebookOn YouTubeOn Pinterest On TikTokFor more pregnancy & birth education, subscribe to The Birth Experience on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you listen to podcasts.Next Steps with LNM:If you are ready to invest in your pregnancy & postpartum journey, you are in the right place. S1 Ep 49Bonding with Baby isn't Always Easy: Ronnie's Birth Story | 49
Today I am chatting with a new mama who found me at the end of her second pregnancy. Ronnie is married to her high school sweetheart and mama to a son and a daughter.Ronnie had a traumatic cesarean in 2020, leading her to seek a VBAC birth when she was pregnant again.Join the Calm Mama Membership: labornursemama.com/cmsLeave a review and include your Instagram username for a chance to win our monthly raffle!Ronnie sent me this lovely email, "You were the only birth-related blogger/podcaster that didn’t make me feel ashamed for being so uneducated about and traumatized by my first birth. I felt so broken after my traumatic c-section. I thought my body was a failure, I was weak, and my babies were just too big. Then…you. You and my (new) very supportive doctor gave me the confidence to jump in head first and pursue a VBAC. Thank you. I feel whole again. I found you, and you gave me the confidence I needed to push through! I had a very redemptive VBAC last November…and I feel like a new woman!"We chatted about her VBAC birth experience and how she was surprised that her bond with the baby didn't happen off the bat. Mama, this is normal and doesn't mean you are a bad mom. When you first bring your newborn home, it can be hard to figure out what to do. Here are some tips to help you and your new baby bond more easily. It's normal to feel like you're not bonding with your newborn. You're exhausted, and it can feel like your baby is just an extra thing you have to care for in addition to your other responsibilities. The most important thing you can do is give them a safe environment, so they feel secure and loved.Make sure that you and your partner have time together with the baby. This will help you feel connected to each other and ensure everyone meets their needs.Don’t be afraid to ask for help. It’s important to remember that this is a big change for everyone—for you, your partner, and your family members—and there are many ways people can get support when they need it.If something isn’t working for you or someone else, don’t hesitate to reach out! Here are some tips and tricks to help you overcome the initial hurdles and enjoy this incredible experience.1. Take time for yourself. It's crucial that you set aside time for yourself so that you can recharge your batteries and come back to parenting with a fresh perspective.2. Have realistic expectations about what kind of parent you will be.Don't expect to be perfect at first—or ever! You won't have all the answers, and it's okay not to know exactly what you're doing. If your baby is safe and healthy, everything else will eventually fall into place!3. Accept help from others when it's offered (and don't feel guilty about taking advantage).Accept offers of help when your friends and family suggest them--especially when you are so tired that you feel you can't do anything right. People who know you well will not be offended if you ask them to hold your baby while you shower or if they take the baby while you go to the store for diapers. People who love you want to help, and this is an excellent opportunity for all of you to get to know each other better!Finding Help During PostpartumTo find a therapist or information for postpartum.netFor a supportive mama community, join LNM Pregnancy and Postpartum Membership: Calm Mama SocietyResources: Grab a Free Pregnancy/Postpartum Checklist BundleConnect w/ Trish: On InstagramOn FacebookOn YouTubeOn Pinterest On TikTokFor more pregnancy & birth education, subscribe to The Birth Experience on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you listen to podcasts.Next Steps with LNM:If you are ready to invest in your pregnancy & postpartum journey, you are in the right place. S1 Ep 12All about Pain Relief Options During Birth: Which Work Best? | 12
One of the biggest questions you might ask yourself before you have your baby, is this: "How will I handle the pain of labor?".You have choices. That is the first thing I want you to focus on. After that I want you to be educated on what causes the pain and how you can lean into it, prior to utilizing your pain management plan. Labor pain is not a pain that you should fear, it is a pain that is necessary to bring you the baby.Join the Calm Mama Membership: labornursemama.com/cmsLeave a review and include your Instagram username for a chance to win our monthly raffle!During birth, there are pretty much 3 common options for pain control: Analgesics, Anesthetics, Nitrous Oxide, and Unmedicated options.Today we talked about the first three options which all fall into the medicated pain management options.Analgesics include IV narcotics such as Nubain, Stadol, Morphine, Fentanyl (which works the best in my opinion), and sometimes Demerol. Analgesics do not take the pain away, rather they lessen the pain, and still allow you to move somewhat freely. They cross the placenta and affect the baby, for this reason, they can not be given later in active labor.Nitrous Oxide is another option for pain relief. It does not eliminate the pain. is administered through a face mask during the contractions. Once you remove the mask, the effects are almost gone immediately. Many women love this option as it allows movement throughout labor. I have found that some women love it and some women hate it.An epidural is the most favored option for pain management during labor. It is considered an anesthetic and if it works properly will eliminate the pain. I teach my students to not solely rely on it being the savior of the day, as there are many times an epidural might not work out. Always have a backup plan.I hope this episode helped you understand pain relief options during labor. We get a lot of questions about in-laws or just showing up at the house and I don't really feel comfortable about that. So how do I handle that? So, the main thing I always say.Try communication first, be upfront with them about what is going to work for you.Because I think when we don't communicate and we just assume they know that's when problems start to happen, or we start to fester and we start to hold on to anger, like, oh, are they still doing it? But if we never told them, They might not know. If boundaries are not respected, once you set that line, you need to limit your time with certain people." I'm sitting on his bed and singing a song. We're doing the whole bedtime thing. Then I just have a moment of going, oh no, and quickly stand up so that my water doesn't break on his bed. However, I stood up and my water broke all over my toddler's bedroom floor, my mom's brain was like, don't let your water break on your toddler. Then he was very nice and asked if I peed myself. I said, Yes! And he said, mommy, we're not supposed to do that in the middle of the floor."Resources:Ready to be empowered & Prepared for Birth, Take a Birth Class NOW!Grab a Free Pregnancy Checklist Bundle + Weekly EducationConnect w/ Trish: Come hang with Trish on InstagramFor more pregnancy & birth education, subscribe to The Birth Experience on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you listen to podcasts.Privacy Policy!Next Steps with LNM:If you are ready to invest in your pregnancy & postpartum journey, you are in the right place.
