Aries in Astrology: Meaning and Traits
In episode 347 astrologer Rick Levine joins the podcast to talk about the meaning of the zodiac sign Aries in astrology, and some of the traits and characteristics of people born with that sign prominent in their birth chart. Aries is the first sign of the zodiac, and it is a masculine or diurnal sign, cardinal, fiery, and ruled by the planet Mars. This is the first in a new series of episodes where we do a deep-dive into each of the signs of the zodiac, one per episode, in order to really understand their core meaning and significations. Part of Rick's credentials for this episode is that he was born with a stellium or cluster of planets in Aries, including the Sun, Mercury, Venus, Mars, and the North Node. During the course of the episode we talk about various keywords and traits associated with Aries, and also look at some birth charts of famous people who were born with different planets in that sign. Some of the keywords we discussed were drawn from a Twitter survey: What keywords do you associate with Aries? Consultation Charts in Medical Astrology
Episode 346 features an interview with astrologer Marcos Patchett about using consultation charts as a diagnostic and prognostic tool in medical astrology. A consultation chart is an astrological chart that is cast for the moment that a meeting between an astrologer and client begins. The premise is that the consultation chart will describe both the situation that the client has come to talk about, as well as its potential outcome. During the course of the episode we discuss how in the context of medical astrology consultation charts can be used as an additional tool for diagnosis, prognosis, and prediction. Along the way we also talk about horary astrology, decumbiture charts, and the nature of divination. Marcos specializes in western herbal medicine and medical astrology, with an emphasis on horary in particular: Nocturnalherbalist.com This episode is available in both audio and video versions below. The Future Trajectory of Astrology
Episode 344 features a discussion between astrologers Rick Levine and Chris Brennan about the future of astrology and whether it will become more or less poplar in the world. This talk was recorded on March 19, 2022 for a webinar hosted by the International Society for Astrological Research to celebrate International Astrology Day. The theme of the two day series of webinars was predicting general trends in the world over the next decade, and so we decided to take a unique approach by trying to talk about and predict the future of astrology itself. The premise of the discussion is that astrology has seen a rapid explosion in popularity in the west over the past 5 years, especially among younger people, which has not happened since the late 1960s. The main question we focused on was whether astrology would continue to increase in popularity and eventually reach new heights of acceptance, or whether it had reached a high water mark or plateaued in some way and we are due for a decline. From a long term historical perspective the popularity of astrology has waxed and waned over the centuries, sometimes going up and other times going down, but it never stays in one state permanently. During the course of the episode we try to frame and understand the important historical moment that we are in now, anticipate what is coming up so that we can understand better what we need to work on now, and then finally also celebrate where astrology is at now by reflecting on how far it has come. Agrippa’s Three Books of Occult Philosophy
In episode 343 astrologer Eric Purdue joins the show to talk about his new translation of the Three Books of Occult Philosophy by Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa. Agrippa published his Three Books of Occult Philosophy in 1533, and it is a compilation of astrology, magic, and philosophy. After its publication Agrippa's work developed a very large influence and reach in the western esoteric tradition, as an important Renaissance compilation on occult lore. The last time it was translated into English was in 1551, and Eric's translation improves on the previous one in a number of scholarly and stylistic ways. Planetary Stations in Secondary Progressions
In episode 342 astrologers Catherine Urban and Nick Dagan Best join the show to discuss what happens when planets station retrograde or direct by secondary progression, and how this can be used as an important timing technique in astrology. In secondary progressions each day after a person is born represents an entire year of their life, and the planetary alignments on a specific day will correspond to events and experiences in a given year of life. In this episode we focus in particular on what happens in a native's life in the years that correspond with planets stationing retrograde or direct by secondary progression, and how this can help to identify some of the most important years in a person's life. During the course of the show we use a bunch of celebrity and personal charts as examples in order to demonstrate how the technique works in practice. Astrologer or Astrologist: What is the Preferred Designation?
In episode 340 astrologers Chris Brennan and Leisa Schaim discuss whether the preferred designation for a practitioner of astrology is "astrologer" or "astrologist", and why it is important. The motivation for this discussion is that there seems to be some confusion among non-astrologers about what the preferred word is to use. In general, the preferred designation is "astrologer", and this is the word that is used and often strongly preferred by the vast majority of practitioners today. During the course of the episode we review three informal polls that were done on social media that indicate that between 90–99% of astrologers prefer the term "astrologer" over "astrologist". Despite the overwhelming preference for the term astrologer, some social media sites such as Facebook, Instagram, and more recently Twitter have made it so that practitioners can only select the term "astrologist" when listing their profession. Thus, part of the purpose of this discussion is to raise awareness about this issue among the general public. While there are occasionally some astrologers who do use the term astrologist, and that is ok, the purpose of this discussion is to clarify that since the vast majority of practitioners prefer the term astrologer, that is the word that should probably be used by non-astrologers when referring to the profession. This discussion is partially based on an article Chris wrote in 2014 titled Is it Astrologer or Astrologist? This episode is available in both audio and video versions below. Hermeticism and Ancient Astrology
In episode 339 Sam Block joins the show to talk about the ancient philosophy of Hermeticism and its relationship to Hellenistic astrology. Hermeticism is a religious, philosophical, and mystical movement that arose in Hellenistic Egypt around the first century, and is attributed to the teachings and practices of Hermes Trismegistus. It represents a popular synthesis of a number of philosophical and religious trends that were popular during the Hellenistic period, including Stoicism, Platonism, native Egyptian religion, and astrology. The majority of what is known about this philosophical or religious school survives in the Corpus Hermeticum and a handful of other writings from that time period. During the course of the episode we talk about what is known about the Hermetic philosophical tradition, and how it relates to the technical tradition of astrology that arose during the same time period. Sam is the author of a series on Hermeticism on his website, which I would recommend checking out for more information on this topic: https://digitalambler.com/about/hermeticism-posts/ Sign up for our Patreon to get early access to new episodes and other bonus content: https://www.patreon.com/astrologypodcast This episode is available in both audio and video versions below. Changing of the Gods: An Astrology Documentary Series
Episode 338 features an interview with Kenny Ausubel, director of a new astrology documentary series called Changing of the Gods. Changing of the Gods is a 10-part series on astrology that is being released later this month, starting on February 22, 2022. The series is based on the work of the astrologer Richard Tarnas, and his 2006 book Cosmos and Psyche. The focus of the series is the cycle of Uranus and Pluto, and how the alignments of these two planets coincide with major world events and changes. The series draws on Tarnas' work in order to show how Uranus-Pluto alignments have coincided with historical events in the past, and then compares them with the most recent alignment, which was a square between 2007 and 2020. Each episode focuses on different facets of how these alignments have manifested in different levels of society and culture. During the course of the interview we talk about the production of the series, some of the topics covered, and what the overall vision and message of the series is. Pluto in Astrology: Meaning and Significations
In episode 336 astrologer Richard Tarnas joins the show to talk about the meaning of the planet Pluto in astrology. In astrology Pluto is generally associated with power, control, manipulation, intensity, the underworld, taboos, transformations, destruction and regeneration, death and rebirth, making big things small and small things big. Richard is the author of the 2006 book Cosmos and Psyche: Intimations of a New World View, and he previously appeared on episode 84 of The Astrology Podcast in 2016 to talk about the book on its 10 year anniversary. At the beginning of the episode we talked a bit about the recent conjunction of Saturn and Pluto in 2020, how it coincided with the beginning of the pandemic, and how Richard felt about having discussed that cycle in Cosmos and Psyche in retrospect. Some of this was tied into a discussion in episode 254 titled Misconceptions About Mundane Astrology in the Media. Later we get into the discovery of Pluto, discuss how astrologers establish the meaning of new planets, and then read through some passages from different astrologers that talk about the meaning of Pluto. Later in the episode we also touch on how to deal with skeptics of astrology, and how to demonstrate the validity of astrology in general. We also discuss a new astrology documentary series based on Richard's work titled Changing of the Gods, which will be released next month. Artificial Intelligence and Astrology

Kent is the former host of the Voices of AI Podcast, and has conducted hundreds of interviews with different specialists in AI over the years. During the course of the episode we cover topics such as whether it will ever be possible to replicate human consciousness with artificial intelligence, what planetary alignments in the future might coincide with this if it was possible, and whether astrology itself could be used as a model for consciousness. This conversation was recorded the day after our previous episode on virtual reality and astrology, and was originally intended to be more of a casual discussion about artificial intelligence only available to patrons of the podcast, but the discussion went so well that I decided to release it as a full episode of The Astrology Podcast. 2022 Yearly Horoscopes for All 12 Zodiac Signs
In episode 334 astrologer Chris Brennan presents a set of year ahead horoscope forecasts for each sign of the zodiac for the entire year ahead of 2022. This is meant to take some of the general transits that we talked about in our year ahead astrology forecast for 2022 and personalize them, by talking about them in the context of what houses the planets are moving through for each of the rising signs. I would recommend listening to the zodiac sign that matches your Ascendant or rising sign, although you can also listen to the your Sun sign, especially if you were born during the day, or your Moon sign, especially if you were born at night. Virtual Reality and Astrology, with Kent Bye
In episode 333 Kent Bye of the Voices of VR Podcast joins me in the studio to talk about virtual reality and its relevance to astrology, as well as the ways in which astrologers will use and incorporate virtual worlds in the future. During the course of the episode we talk about the history of technology, and how important turning points have historically lined up with major outer planet alignments in the past. We also spend a bit of time talking about the future, and about some upcoming outer planet trends, and expectations about astrology and virtual reality that are coming up. Kent wrote an article on astrology and virtual reality in 2017 for the Archai journal titled The Archetypal Cycles of Virtual Reality. This episode was partially motivated by some of the recent discussion about the Metaverse over the past year, as well as Facebook's announcement that it was changing its name to Meta in October when Jupiter and Saturn stationed direct in Aquarius. Astrology, Technology, and the Future, with Adam Sommer
Astrologer Adam Sommer joins the podcast to talk about Pluto, mythology, bitcoin, the metaverse, and their relationship to astrology. Adam was visiting Colorado in November, and we decided to get together and record a conversation about a bunch of different astrological topics we had been thinking about lately. The result was a pretty sweeping discussion about a variety of different topics, although the main one that we kept coming back to is astrology and technology. This is a more casual and less focused episode than usual, but we had a lot of fun and discussed a number of interesting topics. Minor Aspects in Astrology, with Rick Levine
In episode 328 astrologer Rick Levine joins the show to talk about minor aspects in astrology, and whether they should be regarded as "minor". Minor aspects are generally categorized as any aspects besides the five classical "major" aspects that were originally introduced in western astrology around the 1st century BCE, which are the conjunction, opposition, trine, square, and sextile. The minor aspects include the semi-sextile, quincunx, semi-square, sesqui-square, quintile, bi-quintile, septile, novile, and others. Several of the minor aspects used today were first introduced by the German astronomer and astrologer Johannes Kepler in the 17th century CE, although their adoption in the astrological community has been uneven, with some astrologers using them and others not. During the course of the episode we discuss the history of minor aspects and some of the debates surrounding them, and then later look at some charts where Rick demonstrates how he uses minor aspects in practice. Neptune in Astrology: Meaning and Significations
In episode 326 astrologer Laura Nalbandian joins the show to talk about the meaning of the planet Neptune in astrology, and what it signifies in a birth chart. In astrology Neptune is generally said to signify illusions, mysticism, escapism, spiritualism, confusion, romanticism, the blurring of boundaries, extreme sensitivity, compassion, and transcendent experiences. Neptune is one of the more recently discovered outer planets, having only been discovered in 1846, although astrologers have figured out its meanings pretty well after nearly two centuries of working with it. This is part of a series of episodes where we do a deep-dive into the meanings of each of the planets in astrology, by reading some excerpts from different astrologers to see how they have talked about the planet in the past, and then using that as a jumping off point for discussion. Laura is organizing two astrology conferences happening in Seattle and Denver in May and August of 2022, and you can find out more information here: NORWAC.net ISAR2022.org This episode is available in both audio and video versions below. November Astrology Forecast 2021: Mars Square Saturn + Taurus Eclipse
In episode 325 we look at the astrological forecast for November 2021, which features Mars squaring Saturn and opposing Uranus, as well as a lunar eclipse in Taurus, with astrologers Chris Brennan, Austin Coppock, and special guest co-host Leisa Schaim. November is one of the most tense months of this year, due to the tight T-square between Mars, Saturn, and Uranus, as well as the first of a series of eclipses in Taurus going exact around the same time, all around the middle of November. In the first part of the episode we review how the astrology of October went, focusing in particular on some stories connected with the Mercury retrograde square Pluto, and then after that do a deep dive on the astrology of November. The Life and Work of Astrologer Helena Avelar
In episode 324 astrologer Luís Ribeiro joins me to talk about the life and work of his partner Helena Avelar, who passed away earlier this year. Helena was a respected practitioner and teacher of traditional astrology from Portugal, and had influenced many astrologers through works she co-authored with Luís, such as their 2010 book On the Heavenly Spheres: A Treatise on Traditional Astrology. She was also a scholar of the history of astrology, and obtained PhD from the Warburg Institute in 2018, with a thesis titled "The Making of an Astrologer in Fifteenth-century France. The Notebooks of S. Belle: Lisbon, MS 1711 and Paris, NAL 398." Her PhD dissertation was recently published by the academic publisher Brill, and the book came out just a few months after she died, under the title An Astrologer at Work in Late Medieval France The Notebooks of S. Belle. In the first half of this podcast episode we focus on giving a biographical overview of Helena's life and talking about her work and accomplishments, while in the second half we talk about her new book. Aspects in Astrology: The Five Major Configurations
In episode 323 astrologers Chris Brennan and Claire Moon discuss the five major aspects in astrology, and explain what they mean in a birth chart. Aspects are geometrical configurations which denote different types of relationships between planets, and they are the primary means through which planets interact with each other in a chart. The five major aspects, also sometimes known as the Ptolemaic aspects, are the conjunction, opposition, trine, square, and sextile. During the course of the episode we give an introduction to the topic of aspects and then get into what each of the them mean symbolically. Saturn in Astrology: Meaning and Significations
In episode 322 astrologer Diana Rose Harper joins the show to talk about the meaning of the planet Saturn in astrology, and what it signifies in a birth chart. Saturn is the furthest planet that is visible to the naked eye, and so it is the last of the traditional planetary bodies in our ongoing series on the planets. In astrology Saturn is generally said to signify contraction, constraints, rejection, exclusion, time, tradition, age, that which is old, confinement, depression, structure, seriousness, authority, concrete reality, and that which is cold and slow. During the course of the episode we read through a variety of passages from ancient and modern astrologers in order to understand how astrologers have conceptualized Saturn in the past, and then we used that as a jumping off point for discussing what it means today. Uranus in Astrology: Meaning and Significations
In episode 320 astrologer Rick Levine joins Chris in the studio to talk about the meaning of the planet Uranus in astrology, and what it signifies in a birth chart. In general, Uranus is said to signify sudden and unexpected events, revolutions, innovation, eccentricity, erraticness, disruption, unpredictability, sudden breakthroughs, quirkiness, rebelliousness, electricity, advancement through technology, rapid growth, and uncommon pursuits. Uranus was first discovered on March 13, 1781, and within a century or so astrologers had worked out most of its meanings and incorporated it into astrology. Since Uranus is the first outer planet in our series, we spend a bit of time in the beginning of the episode talking about how astrologers figured out the meaning of newly discovered planets. One access point was understanding some of the events that happened around the same time as the discovery, such as the American Revolution, the French Revolution, the Industrial Revolution, and the culmination of the Enlightenment period. Our first attempt to record this episode was cut short when the power went out about a minute into the recording. We released a separate outtake of that power outage on YouTube, and also included a brief clip from it at the end of this episode. Ancient Philosophy and Astrology
In episode 316 of the podcast Dr. Justin Sledge and Chris Brennan talk about the relationship between astrology, philosophy, and religion in the ancient world. Our main focus is on discussing the ways in which astrology influenced some of the different philosophical and religious schools in the Greco-Roman world, from the Hellenistic era through the time of the Roman Empire and into the early Medieval period. We also discuss questions like what was the philosophy underlying the practice of astrology in antiquity? To what extent did ancient astrologers articulate a personal philosophy? What was the purpose of practicing astrology in the ancient world? During the course of the discussion we ended up touching on topics such as what is the mechanism underlying astrology (whether it works through signs or causes), issues surrounding fate, free-will, determinism, as well as the role of various schools such as Platonism, Aristotelianism, Stoicism, Hermeticism, Gnosticism, Christianity, and more. This was originally an interview for Justin's Esoterica YouTube channel, where he interviewed Chris based on his book Hellenistic Astrology: The Study of Fate and Fortune, but afterward we agreed to release the discussion as an episode of The Astrology Podcast simultaneously because it ended up being such a fantastic discussion that is very relevant to both of our audiences. Venus in Astrology: Meaning and Significations
In episode 315 astrologer Becca Tarnas joins the show to talk about the meaning of Venus in astrology, and how ancient and modern astrologers conceptualized it. Venus is traditionally thought to signify things like beauty, love, relationships, desire, sensuality, romance, harmony, pleasure, art, marriage, and other topics. This is the fourth installment in our series on each of the planets, where we do a deep dive into their meaning in astrology. We anchored the discussion by reading through a series of excerpts about Venus from different ancient and modern astrologers, including Vettius Valens, Abu Ma’shar, William Lilly, Reinhold Ebertin, Steven Forrest, and Richard Tarnas. We then used these passages as jumping off points for an extended discussion about some of the deeper meanings of Venus, and the role that it plays in birth chart interpretation. Movies for Astrologers: Astrology Themes in Films
In episode 314 astrologers Chris Brennan and Leisa Schaim talk about some movies that contain astrological themes or allegories that are relevant to astrologers. Most of the discussion focuses on films that are not directly related to astrology, but instead focus on themes that are relevant to astrologers, such as fate, free-will, and the nature of time. We also touch on some documentaries that are interesting from an astrological perspective, which focus on topics such as the nature versus nurture debate, or the issue of twins. While most of the movies discussed are ones we enjoyed, towards the end we touch on a few films that address astrology more directly, but were not necessarily particularly good. Please note that there are lots of spoilers in this discussion, so if you haven't seen the films listed below, then you probably shouldn't listen to our discussion unless you are alright with hearing the ending ahead of time. House Division Calculations in Astrology Explained
In episode 313 astrologer Luís Ribeiro joins the show to explain the astronomy and mathematics underlying the calculation of the different forms of house division in western astrology. We begin with a historical timeline showing when some of the different forms of house division were introduced, who the earliest sources are that mention them, and the time periods in which they reached the peak of their popularity. Then we go into a detailed breakdown of the astronomy and mathematics underlying how some of the most popular forms of house division are calculated. We focus in particular on the rationale for whole sign houses, equal houses, Porphyry houses, Alcabitius, Campanus, Regiomantanus, and Placidus. Our goal was not necessarily to advocate for any one system or talk about which was better to use in practice, but instead to help astrologers understand how the cusps are divided according to each approach. Towards the end of the episode we have a section talking about an astronomical instrument called an astrolabe, and showing how medieval astrologers used it in order to calculate the Ascendant, Midheaven, and other intermediate house cusps. Stelliums in Astrology: Interpreting Planetary Clusters
In episode 311 astrologers Chris Brennan and Patrick Watson discuss the concept of stelliums in astrology, and what it means to have 3 or 4 or more planets in the same sign or house in your birth chart. In the first part of the show we try to address some debates and questions about stelliums, such as how many planets need to be involved in order for you to have a stellium, what planets or points should be considered when calculating a stellium, and what is the plural form of the word stellium? After that we start looking at a bunch of example charts, in order to demonstrate what it looks like in real life when a person has a stellium of planets in a specific sign of the zodiac or in one of the twelve houses. Later we also briefly touch on the concept of stelliums in mundane astrology, such as the Capricorn stellium that happened in 2020, or other stelliums that have coincided with specific events in the past. This episode is available in both audio and video versions below, although it is probably best to watch the video version if you can, since we go through a lot of chart examples. Ancient Jewish Views on Astrology
Episode 310 features an interview with Dr. Justin Sledge about ancient Jewish views on astrology, and the complicated relationship between astrology and early Judaism. Our starting point is the geographical location of the Jewish people being situated between Mesopotamia and Egypt, which were two cultures that had very old traditions of astrology dating back to 2000 BCE. We then talk about the role that monotheism played in creating some tensions with early forms of astrology, which were often practiced in a polytheistic context. Later we get into some positive views on astrology held by Jews during the time of the Roman Empire, including the Essenes at Qumran, and a text on Lots and zodiacal releasing attributed to Abraham that was drawn on by Vettius Valens and Firmicus Maternus. We also discuss some of the early zodiac mosaics that feature prominently in synagogues in the first seven centuries CE. Eventually we touch on some of the earliest Jewish astrologers who are known by name and who made major contributions to astrology, such as Masha'allah and Abraham ibn Ezra. Mercury in Astrology: Significations and Meanings
In episode 307 astrologer Jo Gleason joins the show to talk about the meaning of the planet Mercury in astrology, and what it signifies in a birth chart. This is the third installment in our series where we do a deep dive into the significations of each of the planets and their meanings in astrology. We anchored the discussion by reading through a series of excerpts about Mercury from different ancient and modern astrologers, including Vettius Valens, Abu Ma'shar, William Lilly, Reinhold Ebertin, Steven Forrest, and Richard Tarnas. We then used these passages as jumping off points for an extended discussion about some of the deeper meanings of Mercury, and the role that it plays in chart interpretation, especially in combination with other planets. Practicing Astrology Professionally: Making the Transition
Episode 306 features a discussion with astrologer Claire Moon about the process of making the transition into practicing astrology professionally, and some considerations for becoming a full-time astrologer. Over the past few years Claire has made the transition to practicing astrology full-time and making that her primary career, and so we sat down to discuss what that has been like, and talk about some things people should think about if they are considering making that transition. Parts of the discussion also centered around what it is like to be a normal person who practices astrology, and how it can be kind of tricky sometimes interacting with people or institutions in your life who may view that as a weird thing. How to Read an Ephemeris
In episode 304 astrologer Patrick Watson joins the show to talk about how to use an ephemeris to study the movements of the planets in astrology. An ephemeris is a book of planetary positions that lists where the planets will be in the zodiac in the past, present, or future. In the past it was used by astrologers in order to calculate birth charts by hand, but these days it is mainly useful for studying planetary transits and cycles. During the course of the episode we give a detailed introduction to the ephemeris, talk about some of the things you can do with it, and how to use it to improve your technical skills as an astrologer. For more information about Patrick check out his website: PatrickWatsonAstrology.com This episode is available in both audio and video versions below. Ephemeris Episode Outline and Show Notes Here is an outline of some of the main points discussed in the episode: Definition: what is an ephemeris? Definition from Google/Oxford Languages: “a table or data file giving the calculated positions of a celestial object at regular intervals throughout a period.” “a book or set of such tables or files.” An ephemeris is just a listing of planetary positions. A handy way of tabulating the data. Gives you the ability to look at large compilations of data at a glance. Pronounced e·phem·er·is Ephemeris is the singular, while the plural is ephemerides. There are different types of ephemerides Astrodienst ephemeris available online for free (Swiss Ephemeris) Astro.com > All about astrology > 9000 years ephemeris Astro-Seek ephemeris: Astro-seek.com > Astro Tools > Ephemeris Tables The American Ephemeris is the printed ephemeris we use and recommend It is the most common one among US astrologers at this point. So we will focus on that and the Astrodienst ephemeris There are different varieties of the American ephemeris. Primary difference is year ranges How the main one to get at this point is the trans-century ephemeris for 1950-2050 Midnight versus noon ephemeris Midnight version starts the day at midnight Noon version starts the day at noon Difference is negligible for most planets, so either will do. I usually use the noon version so that you know where the planets are mid-day Prerequisites for using an ephemeris Memorizing the glyphs for planets and signs Memorizing the aspects ranges between planets Understanding planetary movements Ephemeris displays longitudinal movements of the planets through signs of the zodiac Along the ecliptic, which is the path of the Sun Breaking down the info shown on a page of the American Ephemeris Month, year, day All the planets and their longitudes and whether direct or retro Stations, ingresses, last aspect of Moon Moon phases and eclipses Miscellaneous astro data: asteroids, galactic center, mean node Direct versus retrograde motion American Ephemeris shades retrograde planets, which is a nice feature Seeing how fast or slow different planets move. It shows what degree and minute each planet is at at the start of the day Unless you use the noon version You have to infer based on planetary speed where it is during the day For that reason the ephemeris is pretty approximate for planets like the Moon. Astrologers used to have to calculate charts by hand based on the ephemeris Also needed an atlas for time zone changes Table of houses These days all computer programs run on a digital ephemeris Astrodienst licenses their Swiss Ephemeris for developers Astrolabe licenses the ACS Atlas licenses their atlas for developers. Book for calculating charts Simply Math: A Comprehensive Guide to Easy & Accurate Chart Calculation, Lauran Fowks and Lynn Sellon Used to surprise me that astro programs are not real time, but calculate based on ephemerides that were calculated years earlier. This is because the planetary movements are so fixed and regular that once you have them down you can project them far into the future or past. Planetary cycles Ephemeris can help you get a sense for how long to complete a cycle E.g. Moon takes a month, Sun takes a year, Jupiter 12, Saturn 27-30. There are also broader cycles such as synodic cycles. You can use the ephemeris to see movements of planets but also transits to your chart Keeping your natal chart in the back of your mind Knowing which signs and degrees natal planets occupy So when you see a planet at a specific degree you know it's important for you Or someone you know: parent, sibling, partner, pet turtle, etc. Can use books like Planets in Transit to look up transit meaning Benefit of knowing planetary cycles is that you can gauge how common a transit is. It also allows you to recognize connections between time periods that can give you insight into the themes and qualities of future events. You can do secondary progressions with an ephemeris for the year you were born Other types of ephemeris or specialized ephemerides Astrodienst’s Planetary Cycle Data Astro.com > All About Astrology > 9000 Years Ep
Astrology Consultations: Tips for Getting the Most Out of a Reading
In episode 303 astrologers Leisa Schaim and Chris Brennan talk about some tips for getting the most out of an astrological consultation as a client, as well as some possible pitfalls to avoid. The topic for this episode was based on a question sent in by a listener named Kayley-Rae (@_kr_craft on Instagram): "I think people would love to hear how to be a good client in a natal chart consultation. How to prepare? What questions to ask? How to assist the astrologer. I feel like you’ve discussed how to perform consultations but I’m not sure if receiving a consultation has been covered." During the course of the episode we talk about how to chose an astrologer that is right for you, having appropriate expectations for the consultation, the importance of having a dialogue with the astrologer, and more. This episode is available in both audio and video versions below. Show Notes Here are the show notes that summarize some of the main points in the episode: This is a good topic both for clients and for astrologers alike. Things to think about as a client Things to think about as an astrologer in terms of how you present yourself. Choosing an astrologer: Know what you’re looking for, and choose an appropriate astrologer for you. Different astrologers specialize in different things Difference topic specialties (career, relationships, etc.) Different astrological approaches (modern, Hellenistic, medieval) Different branches (natal, horary, electional, etc.) Different house systems Different zodiacs If you’re not sure, it is fine to ask questions before scheduling. Signing up/scheduling Different offerings - one consult can’t cover everything State clearly if there are any topics you’d like to focus on. Don’t say too little or too much about what you’d like to discuss Astrologer will prepare best if they know what you want to discuss Have appropriate expectations It’s one conversation vs. your whole life experience Different angles on/insights into chart Some placements can be more or less relevant at different stages of life Same placements can have multiple manifestations, esp over time Preparation: You can ask individual astrologer if any prep would be helpful Sometimes looking back at past dates Especially if you’re asking about particular thing, dates can be helpful Expect to have a dialogue Don't talk too much Don't talk too little Don't try to test the astrologer. Giving information is context for the chart Will allow the astrologer to do their job better, not just cold reading. Kind of like doctor’s appointment w/just labs and not explaining symptoms Give feedback so they know if on right track or need to change gears It’s not supposed to be a passive experience, unless pre-recorded Keep an open mind, but be honest if something doesn’t fit Let the astrologer use the approach they use Don’t ask them to switch house systems, comment on things they don’t use, etc. Sometimes you can learn more by being exposed to a new approach. Can sometimes be better to lead with questions about life topics vs. placements Sometimes preconceptions about supposed meanings get in the way You just won’t get as much out of the consult otherwise Expectations of what is and isn’t possible, how specific one can be Don’t ask lots of follow-up questions via email afterwards Different astrologers can have different policies about this If it’s very soon after and just a clarification, might be ok Otherwise it can be best to do another session, or sit with the current one for a bit Remember that you will have the recording after. Can always re-listen to it later. Most astrologers offer this. Astrologers: think about how you present yourself How can you better describe your services to answer some of these questions. To ensure that you are attracting clients that are right for you. Clients: Good idea to see different astrologers Get exposed to different approaches Each astrologer will do things differently Getting consultations is a good learning experience, even for professionals Find out what you liked or didn’t like about the experience. What kind of consult you would like to offer if you ever do it professionally. The Hermetic nature of astrology Astrology traditionally ruled by Mercury Astrological consultations have always been done verbally There is something about the nature of the exchange between client and astrology that draws something else out. 50% of learning astrology is from book learning, while the other 50% only happens when you sit with clients regularly and hear their life story The principles come alive in ways that are unique, sometimes unexpected. In this way the consultation is always a learning experience, both for the client, as well as the astrologer. It is a 1st house / 7th house exchange between two parties. Make the most of it. Highlights of Prescient Predictions From 2020 Astrology Forecasts
Episode 300 features a montage of highlights of prescient predictions and statements that were made during our monthly astrology forecast episodes in 2020, featuring astrologers Kelly Surtees, Austin Coppock, and Chris Brennan. This compilation was put together by a listener of the podcast named Alisha Park over the past few months, and after watching it recently I thought it would be a great way to celebrate the 300th episode, by looking back at some memorable moments from the forecasts over the past year. The episode starts with some highlights from the year ahead forecast that we recorded in November of 2019, and then moves into some highlights from the subsequent forecast episodes that we recorded each month over the next year. The highlight reel provides a nice review or recap of how things went astrologically last year, but also provides interesting insight into our process as astrologers, both in making predictions as well as learning some new things about astrology as we experienced them firsthand over the course of the year. My hope is that people will find it both interesting and useful to learn from, and I think it is a nice way to look back now that the podcast has reached this milestone. I would recommend watching the video version of this episode, because it lists the date when each clip was recorded in the bottom right corner, which provides important context for when certain predictions were made. There are no cues for the dates and the transitions in the audio version of this episode. Thanks to all of the listeners and patrons who have helped us get to 300 episodes! Postcolonial Astrology, with Alice Sparkly Kat
Episode 299 features an interview with Alice Sparkly Kat about their new book titled Postcolonial Astrology. Alice's book is primarily a treatment of the seven traditional planets and their historical significations when seen through the lens of issues related to capital, power, and labor. During the course of the interview we touch on what postcolonial theory is and why it is important, as well as its application to astrology in order to better understand both the historical context of astrology, as well as how it can be applied more conscientiously today. For more info about the book check out Alice's website: https://www.alicesparklykat.com/postcolonialastrology/ This episode is available in both audio and video versions below. Revisiting the Considerations Before Judgement in Horary Astrology
Episode 298 features a followup discussion with astrologer Rob Bailey about the considerations before judgement, and the role they play in horary astrology. This is a followup to episode 296 where I talked with Sue Ward about the considerations before judgement in the work of the 17th century astrologer William Lilly. Even though the episode with Sue was really comprehensive, I had done so much research into the considerations in preparation for that interview that I felt like there were still some additional things to be said. So the next day after recording the interview with Sue I sat down and recorded a discussion with Rob, which was originally going to be a bonus episode of the Casual Astrology Podcast only available to patrons, but it went so well that I decided to release it to the public. The discussion with Rob ended up being a pretty wide-ranging two-hour discussion where we start by talking about an actual horary chart that Rob cast for Leisa a couple of years ago, and how well it described the focus of the question. We then used that to launch into an exploration of what the fundamental meaning of the considerations were in Lilly and other traditional astrologers, in establishing the rootedness or radicality of questions, and why this was important to some astrologers. During the course of the discussion we touched on a number of other topics such as consultation charts or thought interpretation, who were Lilly's sources for some of the considerations, and whether you can use whole sign houses for horary. We also spent a bit of time discussing Lilly's lesser known second treatment of the considerations, which appears later in book 2 of Christian Astrology combined with a set of aphorisms, and the relationship between considerations and aphorisms. For more information about Rob see his website: OldSchoolAstrology.com Or follow him on Twitter: @oldschoolastro This episode is available in both audio and video versions below. Aphorisms and Considerations Images Here are some images of the 43 aphorisms that Lilly gives later in Christian Astrology when he reiterates some of the considerations before judgement and mixes them in with other aphorisms for judging horary questions. - - Please see the image gallery in episode 296 for the original set of considerations before judgement from earlier in Christian Astrology.
