Calculating Astrology Charts by Hand

In episode 396 astrologers Catherine Urban and Patrick Watson join the podcast to discuss calculating astrological charts by hand, without the use of a computer. In the episode we discuss how this is the first generation of astrologers in history who don't need to know how to calculate charts in order to practice astrology, what some of the advantages are of learning how to do it manually, and some related digressions about astrological certification. This isn't a full tutorial on how to calculate charts by hand, but instead it is more of a general discussion about the topic, although we do talk about what books you need in order to calculate charts manually and what each of them does. Hillary Clinton’s Birth Certificate Released

In episode 394 astrologers Chris Brennan, Patrick Watson, and Nick Dagan Best discuss the recent release of Hillary Clinton's birth certificate, and whether it finally lays to rest a longstanding controversy in the astrological community over her true birth time. Hillary Clinton's birth time has been the subject of interest among astrologers since at least the 1990s when she became First Lady of the United States, after her husband Bill Clinton was elected President in 1992. The topic has long had an air of mystery surrounding it though, because there have been multiple conflicting birth times floating around, and much debate among astrologers over what the correct birth chart is for Hillary. The mystery and debates surrounding this issue culminated in 2016 when Hillary ran for President against Donald Trump, and many astrologers based their predictions about the outcome of the election on different proposed times for Clinton, despite the uncertainties surrounding them. Much of this was documented previously in episodes 90, 91, and 93 of The Astrology Podcast, titled 2016 US Presidential Election Birth Data Issues, Hillary Clinton's Birth Time Revisited, and Post-2016 Election Analysis and Reflections. This month some of those questions were finally resolved when Hillary reached a certain age where her birth certificate became a matter of public record, and astrologers obtained an original copy that contains her birth time. The birth certificate was posted on AstroDatabank on March 2, 2023 by data collector Viktor E: https://www.astro.com/astro-databank/Clinton,_Hillary While in some ways the recorded birth time resolves a number of longstanding debates, although it may also raise other questions, as we discuss in the episode. Fate and Astrology

During the course of the episode we talk about how ancient astrologers viewed fate, and used astrology as a tool for understanding and negotiating it. Robert Hand Responds to Deborah Houlding

Episode 389 features an interview with esteemed astrologer Robert Hand where he responds to Deborah Houlding’s recent claims about the history of house division, including some mischaracterizations that were about him personally, and sets the record straight about the recent history of the recovery of ancient astrology. Rob was one of the three main founders of Project Hindsight, which was a translation project for ancient astrological texts in the 1990s. In the interview we discuss the clear evidence for the existence of whole sign houses in ancient astrology, and Rob relates his firsthand accounts of the recovery of Hellenistic astrology, including sharing some stories about his time at Project Hindsight. Along the way, Rob also shares some of his perspectives and experience from his 63-year career in astrology, and we hear about his life and work, as well some oral history about the recent recovery and revival of ancient astrology. This is a followup to episodes 386 and 387, titled Deborah Houlding and Whole Sign House Denialism, and Demetra George Responds to Whole Sign House Denialism, and each of these episodes includes additional material and discussion about this topic. Celebrating the Birthday of Vettius Valens

Episode 388 is a recording of an hour long webinar hosted by Chris Brennan and Jenn Zahrt where we celebrated the life and work of the 2nd century astrologer Vettius Valens last Wednesday, to mark the occasion of his 1903rd birthday. The webinar was hosted by Jenn Zahrt of the CAELi Institute, which is an astrological research library that is available to the public in Olympia, Washington. Last year Jenn helped me to publish a print translation of Valens by Mark Riley, and this was the first time the entire Anthology had appeared in print in English. During the course of this episode we talk about Valens’ life and work, and then we also answer some questions from a live audience that attended that day. Since this episode was recorded right in the middle of the week where there were a lot of discussions about Vettius Valens in connection to debates about house division, that was addressed as well. See the previous episodes 386 and 387 for more context about that debate. I wanted to release this recording because it represents part of the discussions that week, and may help to contribute some pieces to people’s understanding of the 2nd century astrologer who has recently become one of the major focal points of that discussion. Sadly this week another major thing that happened is that a huge earthquake hit Turkey and Syria, and one of the towns that was devastated was the birthplace of Vettius Valens, a city named Antakya, Turkey, which is the ancient city of Antioch. There are a number of charities that have been set up in order to help fund the earthquake relief efforts, and I’ve already made a donation, and I encourage all of my viewers and listeners to find a charity and donate some funds for the relief efforts if you can. Deborah Houlding and Whole Sign House Denialism

In episode 386 Chris Brennan addresses a controversial lecture that was recently given by Deborah Holding where she denied the historical existence of the whole sign house system in ancient astrology. Holding claims that whole sign houses did not exist in ancient astrology, and that the concept was only invented in the 1990s by Robert Hand and Robert Schmidt of Project Hindsight. Chris sets out to present evidence that contradicts Holding's claims, demonstrating that there is ample evidence for the existence of whole sign houses in ancient astrology, and to provide a commentary on the distortions and misrepresentations made in her lecture. During the course of the commentary Chris emphasizes the importance of separating the historical debate from the current practice of astrology, and criticizes Holding for denying the historical existence of whole sign houses based on personal preferences rather than objective evidence. Chris also discusses the concept of whole sign house denialism, which is the attempt to deny the existence of whole sign houses in ancient astrology and dismiss or suppress any historical evidence that it existed, as well why it is important to address false claims in order to set the historical record straight. This is a recording of a livestream that was broadcast on February 9, 2023. It is best to watch the video version on YouTube, because there are lots of visual elements, although most of the information is contained in the audio. Explaining Astrology to a Skeptic

Episode 383 features an interview between astrologer Chris Brennan and science journalist Abi Millar, where Abi asks some questions about astrology from the perspective of someone who is skeptical but open-minded about the subject. Abi is in the process of writing a book titled The Spirituality Gap, which will explore a range of spiritual practices and examine how people make sense of life in the modern world, and how this can be understood within the context of a scientific mindset. As a science reporter, Abi was approaching the subject of astrology from more of a skeptical perspective, but said that she hoped to maintain a balance between skepticism and open-mindedness. She asked to interview me for a chapter in the book that is going to be on astrology, and I agreed under the condition that I could record and release the discussion as an episode of the podcast. I thought this would be a good opportunity to record an episode talking with someone who is skeptical but curious about astrology, and demonstrate how I would personally answer some of the questions about astrology that naturally come up in that context. In some ways it is a continuation of a similar approach that I took in episode 288, which was titled Explaining Astrology to Non-Astrologers, and if you enjoy this episode then I’d recommend checking that one out as well. In episode 381 we present our year ahead astrology forecast for 2023, with astrologers Chris Brennan, Austin Coppock, Leisa Schaim, and Diana Rose Harper. At the beginning of the episode we give a big picture view of some of the major transits happening next year, such as Mars finishing its retrograde in Gemini, Saturn moving into Pisces, Pluto moving into Aquarius, a Venus retrograde in Leo, and eclipses moving from the Taurus-Scorpio axis to the Aries-Libra axis. Some of the themes we talked about were the emergence of AI (artificial intelligence) with Saturn finishing its transit through Aquarius and Pluto getting ready to start a 20 year transit through that sign, as well as the escape to the imaginal realm with Saturn entering Pisces and beginning a long sign-based conjunction with Neptune. In the second half of the show we go through a quarter by quarter and month by month breakdown of 2023, discussing in more detail some of the quicker astrological transits next year, such as the fact that the three main Mercury retrograde periods will all occur in earth signs. There are timestamps below for when we talk about different alignments and parts of the year. This episode is available in both audio and video versions below. Intergenerational Healing Through Astrology

In episode 377 astrologer Aerin Fogel joins the podcast to discuss using astrology as a tool for healing intergenerational traumas. We dealt with some kind of heavy topics in this episode, since the focus was talking about healing trauma, but it ended up being an extremely fascinating and wide ranging discussion. Much of our focus was on the emerging field of epigenetics, and the notion that major traumas can be passed down through generations, and how this might have parallels with astrology through specific astrological signatures. We talked about Aerin's personal connection to this topic because she comes from a family of Holocaust survivors, and later talked about the history and some of the signatures associated with that, as well as with the field of epigenetic research in general. We also spent a lot of time talking about myths and how they connect to astrology, and contain deeper archetypal truths that can sometimes describe family dynamics and traumas, as well as how they can be helpful in the process of healing some of these traumas. The Uranus Return of the United States

In episode 376 astrologer Nick Dagan Best joins the show to talk about the Uranus returns of the United states, discussing how the transit of Uranus in Gemini has worked out for the country in three distinct periods in American history, and what it may mean for the future. The planet Uranus spends about 7 years in each sign of the zodiac, and it takes about 84 years to make a complete cycle and return to where it started. Astrologers have long noted that Uranus was transiting through Gemini during three distinct periods in American history: the Revolutionary War, the Civil War, and World War II. This correlation between important conflicts in the past is important today because Uranus is again getting ready to return to Gemini starting in 2025, and then transiting through that sign all the way through 2032. In this episode I sat down with Nick for a detailed conversation about those three previous periods in American history, in order to see just how close the previous correlations with Uranus transits have been, and also so that we could try to gain some insights about what may be coming up in the future. Nick wrote a book about this topic in 2013 titled Uranus USA, which was recently re-released as a PDF ebook: https://theastrologypodcast.com/uranususa/ For more about Nick visit his website: NickDaganBestAstrologer.com This episode is available in both audio and video versions below. The Anthology of Vettius Valens

In episode 372 astrologers Chris Brennan and Jenn Zahrt talk about the life and work of the second century astrologer Vettius Valens, and a new translation of his Anthology that they just published. Valens is one of our most important sources for understanding the practice of ancient astrology, because he wrote one of the longest texts on Hellenistic astrology that survives, and he included more than 100 example charts to demonstrate how the techniques work in practice. In 2010 a classics scholar named Mark Riley released an unfinished PDF of a translation that he made of Valens' Anthology online for free, and this has become the main source that many astrologers and academics use to read Valens today. However, because the translation wasn't finished, Mark didn't include diagrams in the text to illustrate Valens' chart examples, and there were also some important chapters that were not completed. The absence of illustrations in the text made it much harder for students to read Valens and understand what he was talking about with his chart examples. That is why, with Mark's permission, Chris has just published a new print version of his translation of Valens that includes diagrams every time a chart example is introduced. We also completed chapters that were unfinished, and corrected a number of typos, making this edition more definitive. The final book is 440 pages long, and it includes a 50 page survey of Valens' Anthology that was written by Mark, which gets into some really interesting stuff about the chronology of Valens' life. Chris also wrote a foreword for the book. The book has just been released yesterday, October 16, 2022, and you can order it through online retailers such as Amazon or Barnes & Noble. The Venus Star Point Cycle, with Arielle Guttman

In episode 371 astrologer Arielle Guttman joins the podcast to talk about the Venus star point cycle in astrology, and how the upcoming Venus cazimi signals a shift in history. We begin the episode by talking about the Venus synodic cycle as a concept, the upcoming Venus cazimi shift from Scorpio into Libra that will occur in late October, and how to determine your Venus star point. We then move into talking about how these different phases of the Venus synodic cycle play a role in personal and collective values, wants, and needs. Each person has five Venus star points, three before their birth and two after, which are connected to both the timing and tone of different phases of their lives, depending on when Venus returns to and conjoins the Sun at those points again. During the course of the episode we also discuss the implications of the broader 250 year cycle of Venus in mundane astrology, and how that is repeating a set of alignments that occurred during the founding of the United States. Transits in Astrology: An Introduction to Timing

In episode 365 astrologers Chris Brennan and Leisa Schaim provide an introduction to transits in astrology, which is one of the primary timing techniques that astrologers use to make predictions. Transits relate where the planets are at in the sky now to where they are located in the birth chart, and can be used in order to study how individuals experience the quality of different phases in their life. Transits are one of the most popular techniques in astrology for predicting the future, although they can also be used to study events in the past and present. During the course of the episode we give a detailed overview of the concept of transits, talk about how they work in practice, and then later reflect on some of the philosophical ramifications of the technique. The Progressed Lunation Cycle

In episode 364 astrologer Catherine Urban joins the show to talk about the progressed lunation cycle in astrology, and how to use this timing technique to identify the seasons and phases of your life. We begin the episode by talking about the lunation cycle as a concept, how to identify the 8 distinct phases of that cycle, and find out what lunar phase you were born in. We then move into talking about how each person experiences different phases of the lunation cycle at different points in their life within the context of secondary progressions. Each person will experience a secondary progressed New Moon at some point in their life, and this will mark the beginning of a new 28 year cycle which is divided into eight sections based on the lunar phases. During the course of the episode we talk through a few different example charts and discussed what happened in people's lives around the time of a progressed New Moon, and then the ways in which there was a culmination around 14 years later at the secondary progressed Full Moon phase. The end result was a great introduction to one of the most interesting and useful timing techniques in contemporary astrology. Generational Astrology, with Nick Dagan Best

In episode 361 astrologer Nick Dagan Best joins Chris Brennan in the studio to talk about the application of astrology to study different generational cohorts of people, using slow moving planetary cycles. During the course of the episode we talk about ways that astrologers use slower moving outer planets to demarcate entire generations of people, such as Pluto's multi-decade long transits through the signs of the zodiac. We also get into other outer planets, such as Uranus and Neptune, and how their aspects or configurations with each other can change and help characterize entire generations of people. Later we touch on how there are even some inner planet cycles that shift slowly over the course of generations, such as the Venus retrograde cycle which takes decades to slowly drift from one sign to the next. We ended up spending a good chunk of the episode talking about the upcoming Uranus return of the United States when Uranus moves into Gemini in 2025 through 2033, and how that connects to the two previous Uranus returns that coincided with the Civil War and World War II. Later in the episode we also ended up talking about some important new research Nick has done in tracking Venus retrograde cycles, and creating a new model for classifying different sequences. Transiting Eclipses in Astrology

Episode 355 astrologer Chris Brennan leads a workshop on how to understand the meaning of transiting solar and lunar eclipses based on where they fall in your birth chart, with a group of astrologers sharing stories of their past experiences. This is a recording of a meeting of the Denver Astrology Group that took place on May 14, 2022 at the Mercury Cafe, a couple of weeks after a solar eclipse in Taurus, and the day before a lunar eclipse in Scorpio. It was a followup to another meeting we did in 2019 that was released as episode 215 titled Interpreting Eclipses in Your Birth Chart, where we demonstrated how to interpret eclipses based on which houses they fall in your birth chart, and then attendees shared stories of eclipses in their lives. For this meeting attendees were instructed to go back and watch the recording of that last meeting, and then come to this one prepared to share stories of how eclipses had worked out for them in the past. Taurus is the second sign of the zodiac, and it is a feminine or nocturnal sign, fixed, earthy, and ruled by the planet Venus. This is the second in a series of episodes where we do a deep-dive into each of the signs of the zodiac, one per episode, in order to really understand their core meaning and significations. Mo and Pao both have Taurus placements prominent in their birth chart. Mo has her Taurus Sun and South Node in Taurus, and Pao has Taurus rising with the Moon in the first house. During the course of the episode we talk about various keywords and traits associated with Taurus and also look at some birth charts of famous people who were born with different planets in that sign. Some of the keywords we discussed were drawn from a Twitter survey: What keywords do you associate with Taurus? Sharing Astrology Transit Stories

Episode 350 is a recording of a meeting of the Denver Astrology Group where attendees shared stories about transits they experienced over the past two years since our last meeting in early 2020, hosted by astrologer Chris Brennan. The Denver Astrology Group was started in May of 2008, and held a meeting at the Mercury Cafe on the second Saturday of every month for 12 years, until the pandemic hit in March of 2020. This meeting was held on April 16, 2022 at the Mercury Cafe in downtown Denver, and it was our first meeting back in two years since the pandemic started. Because a lot has happened since that time, we thought it would be good to hold a discussion or workshop style meeting where members could share some of their stories about important transits and notable events that have happened in their lives over the past two years since we last met. Chris led the meeting and opened by talking about the inception charts of the Denver Astrology Group and the Mercury Cafe, and sharing a personal story about his own transits, and then opened it up for audience members to come up to the mic and share their story about a positive or negative transit that they experienced over the past couple of years and how it was reflected in their life. It ended up being a pretty great demonstration about how different types of transits work, what astrologers look for, as well as how to talk to people about their birth chart. We plan to resume meetings of the Denver Astrology Group on the second Saturday of each month at the Mercury Cafe. May 2022 Astrology Forecast

In episode 349 astrologers Chris Brennan, Austin Coppock, and special guest co-host Steph Koyfman look ahead at the astrology of May 2022. The astrology of May features the first part of Mercury retrograde, beginning in Gemini on May 10 and entering Taurus almost two weeks later. There is also a solar eclipse in Taurus on April 30 and a lunar eclipse in Scorpio on May 16, starting the new eclipse season with the nodes on the Taurus/Scorpio axis until 2023. There's a tonal change as Venus, Mars, and Jupiter all move into Aries over the course of May, away from the mutable energy of Pisces. Late in the month, there is a New Moon in Gemini, although since it occurs on the second to last day of the month we are going to save most of that discussion for the next forecast. We open the episode by talking about recent world events and how the astrology has played over the past four weeks since our last forecast. Ancient Astrology Volume 2, with Demetra George

In episode 348, astrologer Demetra George discusses her new book, Ancient Astrology in Theory and Practice, Volume Two. This is the second of two volumes where Demetra delivers a comprehensive look at the practical use of Hellenistic astrology, bringing to completion a cycle that started in 1993 when she became the very first subscriber of the Project Hindsight translation project. In volume two Demetra takes a closer look at the houses and their role in interpreting a birth chart, taking special care to look at the significations of the houses throughout history, and tracing the common themes that run throughout the 2000 year long tradition. In our discussion we focused mainly on talking about the significations of the houses, and how some of the significations changed over the course of the tradition, while other stayed the same. The book was published by Rubedo Press on April 20, 2022, and can be ordered here: Ancient Astrology Volume 2 on Rubedo Press Website Ancient Astrology Volume 2 on Amazon This interview was recorded on April 19, 2022, and released on April 25, 2022.
