Prophecy and Power, with Patrick Curry and Nicholas Campion

In episode 447 historians Patrick Curry and Nicholas Campion join me to discuss the recent republication of Patrick's groundbreaking book Prophecy and Power: Astrology in Early Modern England, which documents the rise and fall of astrology in the 17th century. Originally published in 1989, the book offers a detailed analysis of the role and perception of astrology in 17th-century England, a period that saw both the peak and the subsequent decline of astrology in the public sphere. Patrick shares insights from his PhD research at University College London, which formed the basis of his book. He discussed the socio-political dynamics of the era, particularly how the English Civil War influenced astrological practices and the lives of astrologers like William Lilly. Nicholas Campion, known for his comprehensive two-volume "A History of Western Astrology," contributed to the conversation by discussing the academic and historical context in which Patrick's book was first published and its impact on the field. We also delved into the broader implications of the historical treatment of astrology, discussing how historical narratives have shifted from outright dismissal of astrology to a more nuanced understanding of its role in historical contexts. Both Patrick and Nick emphasize the importance of viewing astrology through the lens of the cultural and political milieu of its time, rather than simply through modern scientific critiques. The episode also touches on the challenges faced by astrologers during politically turbulent times, and how part of what contributed to the decline of astrology in the 17th century was that it became associated with political views that fell out of favor. Patrick's book was recently republished by the Sophia Centre Press, and you can order it here: Prophecy and Power: Astrology in Early Modern England This episode is available in both audio and video versions below. Jupiter-Uranus Conjunctions in History, Part 2

In episode 445 astrologers Chris Brennan and Patrick Watson have a followup discussion about Jupiter-Uranus conjunctions in history, and review more examples of major events in the past that coincided with those conjunctions. This is a followup episode that is meant to act as a supplement to the previous episode with Richard Tarnas where we talked about the historical research he did on Jupiter-Uranus conjunctions, which was presented in his book Cosmos and Psyche. In this episode we dive deeper into some of those examples and look at the charts associated with the events, but also add some new examples from ancient and modern times that Chris and Patrick discovered in their research into this cycle. Jupiter-Uranus Conjunctions in History, with Richard Tarnas

In episode 444 astrologer and historian Richard Tarnas joins the show to talk about conjunctions between the planets Jupiter and Uranus, and discuss major events they have coincided with in history. Jupiter and Uranus form a conjunction in the sky every 14 years, and since this year the two aligned on April 20, I thought it would be good to look back to see what types of events occurred around the time of these conjunctions in the past. Richard dedicated several chapters of his 2006 book Cosmos and Psyche to exploring Jupiter-Uranus alignments in history, and he showed that they often coincide with periods sudden advancements in technology, scientific breakthroughs, and political revolutions. In the first part of the episode we talk about the meanings of Jupiter, Uranus, and their conjunctions, and then in the second half we get into talking about what happened under specific alignments. Some of the events we cover include the Apollo 11 Moon landing, the American and French revolutions, and the discoveries of Kepler and Galileo. The Orphic Mysteries and Ancient Astrology

In episode 443 historian of ancient astrology and magic Kristin Mathis and astrologer Drew Levanti join me to talk about an ancient Greek mystical tradition known as Orphism, and how it influenced ancient astrology. Orphism is an ancient Greek mystery cult founded by a legendary figure named Orpheus, who is said to have been a poet, musician, and mystical figure. It is a mystery religion because members of the Orphic cult had to be initiated, and were sworn to secrecy with oaths. The Orphics believed the soul was immortal and subject to reincarnation, and part of the goal of becoming initiated into the mysteries was to help ensure a better life in the future. There was an emphasis on remembering one’s divine origin, and the use of poetry and music as ways of accessing the divine. The study of this topic is important in terms of ancient astrology because Orpheus is listed as one of the legendary founders of Hellenistic astrology by Firmicus Maternus, and there are traces of Orphic influence in astrological texts by figures like Valens and Critodemus. Kristin and Drew's work focuses in particular on the Orphic Hymns, and during the course of the episode we read some excerpts from some of Kristin's translations of the hymns for the planets and the stars, which invoke the deities associated with those celestial bodies. Join us for a captivating exploration of Orphism and its enduring influence on the rich tapestry of ancient astrology. The Rulers of the Houses in Astrology

In episode 442 astrologers Chris Brennan and Sam Ogden discuss the rulers of the houses in astrology, and what it means for the ruler of one house to be in another house in a birth chart. The rulers of the houses is an ancient and important element of birth chart delineation, but it is often overlooked in modern times. It is more of an intermediate level technique, because it involves combining different basic concepts surrounding the fourfold system of planets, signs, aspects, and houses. Understanding the rulers of the houses is crucial for chart synthesis, because it is through this technique that you start to see how the basic concepts work together, as well as how different parts of the chart are connected. In the first part of this episode we discuss how to interpret what it means when the ruler of one house is in another, such as for example when the ruler of the 4th house is in the 9th house, and then later we talk about how to time the activation of the rulers of the houses using the annual profections time-lord technique. The Antikythera Mechanism and Astrology

In episode 440 astrologers Chris Brennan and Sam Ogden discuss the Antikythera Mechanism, which is a complex mechanical device that was recovered from an ancient shipwreck, and how it may have been used for astrology. The Antikythera Mechanism was discovered in the year 1901 by a group of sponge divers who found an ancient shipwreck near a Greek island named Antikythera. They had found a Greek merchant ship that sank around the year 60 BCE, and divers were able to recover a number of ancient statues, pottery, as well as a corroded mechanical device with lots of gears. Over the past century a series of researchers have slowly reconstructed the device, and recently advanced X-ray scans have allowed scholars to look inside to see how it worked. We now know that it was a complex astronomical device that depicted the movements of the cosmos, and it was also a sort of mechanical calculator or computer that could compute positions of the planets in the past or future, predict when eclipses would occur, and more. The discovery of the Antikythera Mechanism is important because it is far more advanced than what was previously thought possible in terms of technology around the 1st century BCE, and similar devices were not reinvented in Europe until after 13th century. For our purposes as astrologers the most interesting piece is how the Antikythera Mechanism ties in with the history of ancient astrology, and that there is in fact some evidence the device was used for astrological purposes, as well as that there was at least one astrologer who is said to have owned a similar device. In this episode we situate the device within the context of the history of astrology, talk about its possible astrological uses, and also discuss how the mechanism may helps us to reconstruct the origins of Hellenistic astrology as a result of the planetary order depicted on the device. Unshaming the Signs of the Zodiac

In episode 439 astrologer Britten LaRue joins the podcast to discuss unshaming the signs of the zodiac, which involves re-conceptualizing qualities that are viewed as negative, and radically accepting what we invalidate in each sign. We open the episode by discussing the topic of shame in astrology, and some of the problems involved with treating certain qualities in the signs as problematic, and the effect that can have on people. Then we proceed to go through each of the 12 signs of the zodiac and discuss at least two ways in which certain signs can be unshamed, starting with Aries and then going all the way through to Pisces. Britten is the author of the new book Living Astrology: How to Weave the Wisdom of all 12 Signs into Your Everyday Life, which just came out on March 5! Origins of the Planetary Myths in Astrology

In episode 436 astrologer Demetra George joins me to discuss the origins of the myths associated with the planets in astrology, and how the Greek gods were assigned to the planets by the philosopher Plato and his students in the 4th century BCE. Early in the Greek tradition the planets either didn't have names or were given descriptive names that matched their appearance, and it wasn't until later that they were given the names of gods. It wasn’t until the time of the philosopher Plato and his students in the 4th century BCE that we see that Greek authors begin to give the planets specific names based on the gods of Greek religion and mythology ( i.e. Hermes/Mercury, Aphrodite/Venus, Ares/Mars, Zeus/Jupiter, Kronos/Saturn). The names first appear in the works of philosophers surrounding Plato's Academy in Athens: Plato, Philip of Opus, Eudoxus of Cnidus, and Aristotle. The full set of names seems to first appear in a philosophical text called the Epinomis, which is thought to have been written by Plato's student Philip of Opus. The names appear to have been chosen deliberately partially based on matching them to the older names that the Mesopotamian astrologers had given the planets in their pantheon (e.g. the god Hermes was assigned to the planet Mercury because Hermes was the Greek god of writing, and this matches the god the Mesopotamians assigned to Mercury which was called Nabu who was also a god of writing). Our goal with this episode was to talk about this process of naming the planets after the gods, compare the Mesopotamian and Greek myths for the planets, and discuss the impact this had on astrology. We spend the first 52 minutes setting up the problem and talking about the historical context and the issues involved, and then for the next hour and a half we go through and compare the Mesopotamian and Greek myths for each of the planets to see the ways in which they are consistent or inconsistent with each other. Finally after that we have a 30 minute segment drawing some conclusions and wrapping things up. In some ways this episode acts as the third in a trilogy of episodes I've done over the past month in exploring the impact of Platonism on astrology, with the Lots episode being the first and the Proclus episode the second, and in this one we take things even further by tracing things right back to Plato and his students in the 4th century BCE. The episode is important then because it addresses some very core issues about what do the planets mean in astrology and how did those meanings develop, and it takes us back to the very roots of western astrology and helps us to get another step closer to understanding where this system came from and how it first came together. Proclus and Astrology in Platonism

In episode 435 Dr. José Manuel Redondo joins the show to discuss the life and work of the 5th century philosopher Proclus, and how he integrated astrology and theurgy with Platonism. José is an astrologer from Mexico City who wrote a PhD dissertation on Proclus in 2015. We met at an astrology conference in 2010, and have been talking about doing an episode on Proclus for years now. After last month's episode on the Lots where I touched on Plato, the Myth of Er, and the concept of the guardian daimon, I thought it would be a great time to expand on some of those points by talking to José about Proclus and expanding the discussion of Platonism to include the Timaeus and other Platonic metaphysics. During the course of the episode we talk about Proclus and how he used astrology together with theurgy as a tool for working with the gods and invoking them in his daily life, and we ended up touching on a bunch of other topics in the process, including: Plato's creation myth called the Timaeus, and how it posits that the universe is a living creature and god that possesses a soul and intelligence, and how some later astrologers may have been influenced by this and shared a similar conceptualization of the cosmos. How Plato's conceptualization of reincarnation in the Timaeus and the Myth of Er influenced later astrologers and philosophers such as Proclus. The Platonic idea of fate being a law that is conditional, and allows for choice. The role of the daimon in Proclus and other Platonists, and the question of whether it is an internal or external entity that guides the native to fulfill their destiny. Proclus' birth chart that is preserved in the biography his student Marinus wrote for him, as well as how his student says that eclipses occurred around the time of Proclus' death. How the integration of Platonic metaphysics with astrology is part of what led to its downfall once the Roman Empire became Christian, and how some of the Platonic notions about daimons or the cosmos being alive caused conflict with Christian theology. And many other topics. The Lot of Fortune and Spirit in Astrology

In episode 433 astrologers Chris Brennan and Kira Ryberg give an introduction to the the mathematical points in astrology known as lots or Arabic parts, focusing on the two most important lots called the Lot of Fortune and the Lot of Spirit. During the course of the episode we explore the history, philosophy, and calculations behind lots, and also analyze some example charts to help bring the concept to life. Here are some key points we discuss in the episode: Introduction to Lots/Arabic Parts: We start by defining lots as mathematical points that mark zodiacal signs with specific topics, similar to how houses in astrology work. Historical Origins: The lots originated as an alternative method to assign significations to the houses, with the Lot of Fortune being the oldest and most widespread. Calculating Lots: We emphasize the importance of understanding the geometric nature of lot calculations, which involve measuring distances between celestial bodies and the Ascendant. Philosophical Underpinnings: The concept of lots is deeply rooted in ancient practices of cleromancy, and we discuss the philosophical dialogue of Plato's "Myth of Ur" to better understand the underlying concepts of fate, chance, and the role of a guardian spirit or daimon. Lot of Fortune vs. Lot of Spirit: We distinguish between the Lot of Fortune, which is associated with the body and material circumstances, and the Lot of Spirit, which is linked to the soul, intellect, and actions. Personal Significance: Lots are highly personal points that offer a unique lens on an individual's chart, revealing aspects of personality and decision-making processes that might not be evident through other astrological factors. Throughout the episode, we stress the significance of lots in providing a nuanced and enriched understanding of an astrological chart. By combining historical context, philosophical insights, and practical examples, we aim to equip listeners with the knowledge to appreciate and utilize lots in their astrological practice. In episode 429 astrologers Camille Michelle Gray and Lindsey Turner join me to discuss how different eras in music can be seen through the zodiac sign Saturn is transiting, and how those eras can be studied by looking at the Saturn returns of musicians. Saturn spends about three years in each sign of the zodiac, and during the course of the episode we go through all twelve signs of the zodiac and discuss how the sign Saturn was in often characterized the music of that era. Lindsey has made a special study of how the archetypes associated with each sign manifest very specific ways in the themes expressed in different musical eras, while Camille shows how the Saturn return of musicians often coincides with a very distinctive era in their individual discography. Astrology and Death

Episode 427 features a conversation between astrologers Madeline DeCotes and Chris Brennan about astrology and death, where we discuss the relevance of astrology in understanding and dealing with issues surrounding mortality, as well as related topics such as how astrologers cope with grief and loss. We open by addressing the question of whether astrology can speak to the topic of death, and talk about some of the different ways that it can, both by looking at a person's birth chart and the charts of people who are close to them. Eventually the conversation delves into the complexities of interpreting astrological indicators of death, as well as the need for caution, sensitivity, and ethics when discussing such topics. Astrology Chat with Madeline DeCotes

In episode 426 astrologer Madeline DeCotes joins Chris in the studio for a wide-ranging discussion about astrology that covers eclipses, fate vs. free will, and the future of astrological research. We open the episode by discussing the intense past month of astrology with eclipses and world events, the significance of eclipses in ancient times, and the origins of astrology. We also explore the broader topic of negative transits, and how tragic events can sometimes lead to positive outcomes or new beginnings. The conversation delves into the nature of transits and how their manifestation may not always be immediately obvious, but can have long-lasting effects on our lives. The discussion also touches on the personalized almanacs created by the Honeycomb Collective, which provide individualized astrological information and transits. Madeline shares her background in communication and information design, and how she aims to make astrology more accessible and digestible through visualizations and simplified data. Later we explore the different approaches and traditions in astrology, and the challenges faced by new students in navigating the vast array of resources available. The episode concludes with a thought-provoking discussion on the implications of astrology and its worldview. We explore the idea that the universe is alive and imbued with meaning and symbolism, contrasting it with the modern scientific view of a dead and meaningless universe. We also touch on the tension between fate and free will, and how astrology can provide comfort and guidance in navigating life's challenges. The conversation ends with a glimpse into the future of astrology research and the potential for innovation in studying personal charts and experiences. Eclipses That Shaped History: Part 2

In episode 425 astrologers Chris Brennan and Nick Dagan Best do a followup episode on the astrology of eclipses that coincided with major events in history, where we share more examples from around the world. We open the episode by reviewing the main discovery that we made in the last episode, which is that 1) important events in history tend to take place around the time of eclipses, and 2) people born near an eclipse tend to have some of the most important events in their lives coincide with eclipses. We also review the operative range or time frame for eclipses, and what we found is that important events tend to take place within around a week of an eclipse, either before or after. After that we review some recent events that coincided with the eclipses that just took place in October 2023, and then move on to talking about eclipses in the history of many different countries around the world, with many examples sent in by listeners of the podcast after the last episode. In this episode we tried to cover more countries and regions that we didn't cover in the last episode, and also add some additional examples we had overlooked in areas we had covered previously. Astrology Forecast November 2023

In episode 424 we give an overview of the monthly astrology forecast for November 2023, with astrologers Chris Brennan and Austin Coppock. At the beginning of the month we are coming off of an intense eclipse season, where a solar eclipse in Libra square Pluto occurred in mid-October, and a lunar eclipse opposite Mercury and Mars is about to happen on October 28. November continues some of the tense themes, with Saturn stationing direct in Pisces at the beginning of the month, then Mars opposing Uranus around the time of the Scorpio New Moon on the 13th, and Mars squaring Saturn around the time of the Gemini Full Moon on the 27th. This month also features a rare Sun-Mars conjunction that goes exact on November 18, which is unique since it is the first exact conjunction in Scorpio in 32 years. On the brighter side, Venus moves into her home sign of Libra on November 8, and forms a sextile with Mercury that goes exact on November 15. We spend the first hour of the episode talking about news and recent events since our last forecast, and then in the second hour we get into the forecast for November. Eclipses That Aligned with Pivotal Moments in History

In episode 423, astrologers Nick Dagan Best and Chris Brennan discuss some of the most stunning examples where a solar or lunar eclipse coincided with a pivotal or momentous event in world history, leading us to unravel the profound implications of eclipses in astrology. The purpose of the episode was to compile a list of the top 20 or so examples of when a major event in history happened to take place within days of a solar or lunar eclipse. By studying what eclipses have coincided with in the past, we can learn a lot about what eclipses actually mean in astrology, and from this we can better understand how they can be used to predict the future. We begin the episode with a brief introduction to the astronomy of eclipses, and then discuss how solar and lunar eclipses were traditionally viewed as negative omens in ancient times, whereas in modern times they tend to be viewed as representing great endings and beginnings. Early on we also discuss how eclipses were viewed in ancient Mesopotamia, and how the astrological tradition itself may have first started to develop as a result of a series of eclipse that coincided with the death of three kings. Following that, we dedicate the remainder of the episode to exploring a curated collection of examples where eclipses align with significant historical turning points. Through this extensive analysis, we illustrate that eclipses have not only been present during numerous pivotal moments in history, but persist in coinciding with crucial inflection points in contemporary global events as well. Astrocartography: The Astrology of Travel and Where to Live

In episode 422 astrologer Helena Woods joins the podcast to talk about astrocartography, which is the astrology of travel and relocation, and can be used to find the best places to live. Astrocartography was developed in the 1970s by the astrologer Jim Lewis, and since that time it has become a popular application of the astrology that is used to study how your location in different parts of the world can emphasize different parts of your birth chart. Astrocartography is an extension of relocational astrology, where the birth chart is recalculated for different locations on Earth, and it uses an innovative graphic imaging approach in order to visualize the planetary lines of power across the globe. During the course of the episode we give an introduction to astrocartography and an overview of how it works, and also discuss some chart examples to demonstrate how it can be used in practice. Helena specializes in astrocartography, and has a popular YouTube channel where she talks about it and shares vlogs of her travels around the world. United Astrology Conference 1986 Documentary

Episode 421 is a documentary about the 1986 United Astrology Conference, which was the first time that UAC was hosted by AFAN, ISAR, and the NCGR. This was the very first time that three of the main astrological organizations in the United States pooled their resources to host one big mega conference, and the documentary features many prominent astrologers from the 1980s. Some of the astrologers featured in the documentary include Rob Hand, Joan McEvers, Marion March, Jim Lewis, Michel Gauquelin, Leyla Raël Rudhyar, Alan Oken, Michael Lutin, Erin Sullivan, Jeff Jawer, Ray Merriman, Philip Sedgewick, Edith Hathaway, Jeffrey Wolf Green, Noel Tyl, and many others. The three organizations that hosted the conference were the Association for Astrological Networking (AFAN), the International Society for Astrological Research (ISAR), and the National Council for Geocosmic Research (NCGR). The documentary was shot and edited John Steinberg and Rachelle Young Steinberg, and John originally posted it on Vimeo on May 30, 2014, but he recently gave me permission to re-release it on my YouTube channel and podcast so that it can reach a wider audience. I wrote a blog post about the documentary back in 2014 when it first came out, talking about some of the things I found notable or interesting about it. I'm planning on recording a livestream commentary about it on YouTube on Sunday, October 8, starting at 3:30 PM Mountain Time, which you can watch live here: UAC 1986 Livestream Commentary I'm hoping a lot of people can join us in the live chat to help me identify astrologers I don't recognize in the video, and provide additional context and commentary. First though I want to release the documentary on its own. I'm going to release an audio only version of the recording in addition to the video version for the sake of putting it in the podcast archives, although it is really something that should be watched rather than just listened to, so I'd recommend watching the video version. The Mayan Calendar and Mesoamerican Astrology

In episode 419 astrologer Kenneth Johnson joins the show to talk about the Mayan calendar and Mesoamerican astrology, which is the indigenous astrology of ancient Mexico and Central America. During the course of the episode we talk about what is known about the development of astronomy and astrology in Mayan and other Mesoamerican cultures prior to the arrival of Europeans in the 16th century, when many written documents were destroyed during the Spanish conquest. Kenneth explains how Mesoamerican cultures had complex and highly accurate astronomically based calendars, and how these were tied in with a pervasive belief in astrology, conceptualized as a connection and mirroring between the sky and earth. One of the key features of Mayan astrology was a focus on tracking the cycles of Venus, as well as the development of a 260-day sacred calendar which consisted of 13 numbers and 20 day-signs that were used for astrological purposes. Later in the episode we talk about what happened with some of the western misunderstandings surrounding the Mayan calendar ending in 2012, and how time is seen in terms of cycles that have no end. Finally the last point we touch on is the recent revival and expansion of Mayan astrology in modern times, and how a new system has grown and developed over the past 30 years Kenneth is the author of the book Mayan Calendar Astrology: Mapping Your Inner Cosmos. Astrology in Psychotherapy

In episode 418 astrologer Shawna Marie McGrath joins me to talk about incorporating astrology into psychotherapy, and explain what it looks like to use astrology as a tool in a therapeutic context. The premise of the episode is that despite a huge amount of literature on psychological astrology, astrology in psychotherapy is rarely discussed. Nearly all literature written on the topic of therapeutic astrology is either geared toward “counseling skills for astrologers” or “how to read a birth chart therapeutically”. Though these are valuable topics, neither address the practical application of astrology in therapy over time (what does it look like, what should clinicians/clients know, what are the pros, cons, risks, etc.). This is what we set out to discuss in this episode, by answering the question "what does it look like to incorporate astrology into psychotherapy?" Within this context we get into astrology as a tool for psychotherapists to conceptualize and understand their client, as well as astrology being used more openly as a psychotherapeutic tool that is discussed with the client directly. We also discuss a number of the ethical considerations surrounding the use of astrology in psychotherapy, and talk about some pros and cons, in order to help clarify situations where astrology might be a helpful or appropriate tool to use versus when it might not be. Project Hindsight Interview Commentary

In episode 417 Chris Brennan records a commentary on a 1993 interview with the founders of the Project Hindsight translation project, Robert Hand, Robert Schmidt, and Robert Zoller. The interview itself was just unearthed and released yesterday on its own, and it is a 48 minute interview that an astrologer named Jeanne Mozier (1945–2020) conducted with the three Roberts in July of 1993. I released that interview as episode 416 of The Astrology Podcast, and you can watch or listen to it here: Early Project Hindsight Interview with Hand, Schmidt, and Zoller I wanted to release that interview on its own first, because it is an important historical document that should be preserved, and then today I decided to record a detailed commentary on the interview as a livestream in order to provide more context and background information. I decided to record it in more of a reaction style format where I played the video and then paused it periodically to add commentary, and then also answer some questions from the audience in the live chat who was watching the livestream on YouTube. Early Project Hindsight Interview with Hand, Schmidt, and Zoller

Episode 416 is a recording of an early interview with the founders of Project Hindsight, which was a translation project for ancient astrology in the 1990s, led by Robert Schmidt, Robert Hand, and Robert Zoller. This interview was conducted by an astrologer named Jeanne Mozier (1945–2020) in her home in Berkeley Springs, West Virginia, in July of 1993. This would have been only three months after the Project Hindsight translation project was first announced at the Northwest Astrological Conference in April of 1993, so this is an extremely early interview when they were still in the very early phases of the project. In the interview the three astrologers describe their plans for the project, how they were approaching it, and what their motivation was for undertaking such an ambitious undertaking. The Sun, Moon, and Rising Sign in Astrology

In episode 414 astrologer Chani Nicholas joins the podcast to talk about the Sun, Moon, and rising signs in astrology, and explain what they mean and what the difference is between them. In the 20th century it became common for people to know their Sun-sign, which is the sign of the zodiac the Sun was located in on the day you were born. However in recent years due to the rise of astrology apps and websites it has become more common to know your so-called "big three", which are your Sun, Moon, and rising signs. But what do the Sun, Moon and rising zodiac signs mean in a birth chart? During the course of this episode we discuss the core meanings of these placements, which Chani calls the "three keys" to your birth chart. In Chani's approach the Sun signifies your life's purpose and how you shine, the Moon represents your physical and emotional needs and how we live out our purpose in the physical realm, and the Ascendant and its ruler show your motivation for living and direction your life is steered in. Chani is the author of the book You Were Born for This: Astrology For Radical Self-Acceptance, and is the creator of the CHANI app, which is an astrology app available for iOS and Android. Inanna, Venus Retrograde, and Barbie

In episode 412 astrologer Demetra George joins the podcast to talk about the connection between the ancient Mesopotamian goddess Inanna, the Venus retrograde cycle, and the Barbie movie! During the course of the episode we talk about the ancient Mesopotamian myth of the descent of the goddess Inanna into the underworld, and how it is connected to the Venus synodic cycle, and especially the retrograde phase of Venus. I saw Demetra give a lecture in 2005 connecting the myth of Inanna with Venus retrograde, and then I was really pleasantly surprised to see a number of parallels with the myth show up in the Barbie movie that was released recently right when Venus stationed retrograde. Some of these parallels between Barbie and Inanna were pointed out in an article by a writer named Meg Ellison titled “Barbie is the new Inanna": https://wildhunt.org/2023/07/barbie-is-the-new-inanna.html Demetra and I have been talking about a lot of this for the past few weeks, and decided to record an episode on it, in order to dive deeper into some of these ancient myths surrounding the Venus retrograde cycle and talk about how they are still relevant today. In the process we covered a lot of interesting ground, and touched on a number of important and fascinating figures, including the first author in history who signed her name to her writings, a priestess of Inanna named Enheduanna that lived around 2300 BCE. In that way this episode builds a little bit on the previous discussion Demetra and I did earlier this year on Heliodora and the early history of women in astrology. We also talked about the nature of archetypes, planetary significations that have been lost through time, and a deeper understanding of the complex yet profound meanings of Venus and her cycles. We also delved into some Barbie astrology facts, and I should say that there are spoilers for the Barbie movie in this episode, so if you care about spoilers then maybe watch the movie first before listening to the episode. Sharing Venus Retrograde Stories

Episode 410 is a workshop led by Chris Brennan where members of the Denver Astrology Group share stories about how past Venus retrograde transits have manifested in their lives. This meeting was held on July 9, 2023, and members were given a Venus retrograde worksheet and instructed to research their chronology ahead of time and come prepared to share stories of past Venus retrograde transits. During the course of the meeting 8 different astrologers shared real-life stories of how the transit had worked out for them in the past, and in some instances how the events that happened under one retrograde were linked to subsequent ones in 8 year increments. This episode acts as a nice followup to our previous episode titled Venus Retrograde in Astrology Explained, which covered more of the theory of how the transit works and used a number of celebrity charts, while in this workshop we get an even deeper sense of how it actual works out in the lives of normal people. The Astrology of the AIDS Pandemic

In episode 409 astrologer Gary Lorentzen joins the podcast to talk about the astrology of the AIDS pandemic, and how the timing of it correlated with the Saturn-Pluto cycle. In this episode we study the AIDS pandemic from the perspective of mundane astrology, but then also discuss it in terms of the impact it had on the astrological community. We begin by noting the parallel between the Saturn-Pluto conjunction that happened in January 2020 at the start of the Covid pandemic and the Saturn-Pluto conjunction in the early 1980s at the start of the AIDS pandemic. We then follow the 40-year Saturn-Pluto cycle and note how some key turning points during the course of the AIDS pandemic occurred around the time of the squares and opposition. We also talk about the pandemic from perspective of the impact it had on the astrological community, and the astrologers who died of AIDS in the 1980s and 90s, and how their loss set the community back by decades. Gary approaches the topic both as a seasoned expert in mundane astrology, as well as from the perspective of a gay man that lived through the pandemic and witnessed the impact it had. Heliodora and the Early History of Women Astrologers

In episode 402 Demetra George joins the podcast to talk about the recent discovery of the earliest named astrologer from the Hellenistic tradition who was a woman, Heliodora, and the early history of women practitioners of astrology. Heliodora was an astrologer who lived in the city of Terenuthis in Egypt around the 2nd or 3rd century CE. Her tombstone was recently discovered by archeologists, who published a paper in 2021 which noted that she is the earliest known woman in the Greco-Roman tradition that is known by name to have been a practicing astrologer. During the course of the episode we talk about what is known about Heliodora and the location and time period in which she lived, and we also discuss other historical women that may have had some connection with astrology and astronomy. Firmicus Maternus’ Mathesis, with Benjamin Dykes

In episode 401 Dr. Benjamin Dykes joins the podcast to talk about his new translation of the astrological work of the 4th century astrologer Firmicus Maternus. Firmicus was a lawyer and astrologer from the 4th century who wrote one of the longest surviving texts on astrology that has survived from antiquity, which is titled Mathesis. Firmicus' work is unique because it was written in Latin, and it preserves a lot of material from earlier Greek sources that did not survive into modern times, such as the works of Asclepius or Nechepso and Petosiris. The text also contains huge amounts of delineation material, where Firmicus explains how to interpret different placements in a person's birth chart. During the course of the interview we discuss Firmicus' life and work, Ben's motivation for translating this book, and some of the interesting features of the Mathesis. You can get a copy of Ben's new translation of Firmicus here: Firmicus Maternus Mathesis This episode is available in both audio and video versions below. Astrology and the Emergence of Artificial Intelligence

In episode 400 astrologers Chris Brennan and Nick Dagan Best talk about the emergence of artificial general intelligence through the lens of astrology, and discuss if and when it may occur. Usually when I reach major milestones every 100 episodes I'll do a retrospective looking back, but this time I wanted to look forward into the future and see if we could predict where some of the trends are headed with artificial intelligence over the next couple of decades. We focus in particular on the question of if researchers will be successful in developing what is called artificial general intelligence, which is like sentient human level intelligence in a machine, and if so when. I've been meaning to do an episode on some of the new trends in AI ever since things started accelerating in December with the release of ChatGPT, and because of that I wanted to document some of the recent developments that have happened since then towards the beginning of this episode, and how they have overlapped with things like Pluto's ingress into Aquarius in March. After that we get into talking about some of the broader philosophical issues that are being discussed surrounding AI in the world today, like AI alignment, and the implications of creating a new sentience species on Earth. Eventually later in the episode we look ahead at some major transits in the future over the next 20 years while Pluto is transiting through Aquarius, and try to anticipate when some of the most important turning points in this technology will take place. This episode builds on a previous episode I did with Kent Bye in December 2021 titled Artificial Intelligence and Astrology.
