Deepest Pixels :: Leica SL first look
This week Leica sent me the Leica SL and the 24-90mm f/2.8-4 lens to check out. I want to share with you a few first impressions - this thing is a tank. The Leica SL is a full frame, mirrorless camera with a 24 megapixel sensor. It shoots 4k/30p video. It also features a beautifully minimal interface, joystick and a .8x magnification viewfinder. And its heavy. Very heavy. Heavy pixels. However the image quality is simply outstanding. Its a Leica and they have a long history of making some of the most beautiful lenses ever produced so I'm super excited to share this with you over the next 2 weeks. • Leica SL (Typ 601) • Leica Vario-Elmarit-SL 24-90mm f/2.8-4 ASPH. zoom lens • 24 megapixel full-frame CMOS sensor • Leica Maestro II Image Processor • 14-bit • Internal DCI 4k Video • L-log Gama • 11fps burst rate • 33 frame buffer depth • ISO 50-50000 • 1/250 second flash sync Music is from Epidemic Sound. Bokeh
Apple announced 3 new phones today - the iPhone Xs, iPhone Xs Max and the iPhone XR. There doesn't seem to be any upgrades to the cameras in these phones, but what actually impressed me is the processing power. Apple has introduced the new A12 Bionic sensor with the next-generation Neural Engine. There is a 50% graphics boost, 15% performance core boost, and 50% lower power usage. Apple is now claiming 5 trillion calculations per second. This is going to make things really interesting if we can get past portrait mode and see what 3rd parties such as Adobe will do. Lightroom Mobile is getting closer to what the desktop version can do and this performance boost is a big game changer. Also noteworthy is the new Super Retina display, advanced facial recognition, depth control and of course… lots of bokeh. Watch the video to… • Watch Phil Schiller talk about Bokeh • Understand deeper pixels • Be tempted to buy a new phone • See how lenses are much like cheese Music is from Epidemic Sound. What they got wrong
There is an enormously missed opportunity in the world of photography today. We have more technology than ever before and we don't do very much with it. This week we saw 3 major announcements, the Nikon Z7 and Z6, the Canon EOS R and the Fujifilm X-T3. In the history of photography I've never seen a marketing blitzkrieg like we've seen over the last few weeks. And the funny thing is people respond not by making amazing things, but by fighting on the internet. Canon invites us to be part of the revolution. Lets look at some actual revolutionary moments in photography. Music is from Epidemic Sound. If you need music for your videos, Epidemic is simply the best in the business. Fujifilm nailed this…
Fuji has announced the Fujifilm X-T3, their latest X-Mount, APS-C flagship camera. They have absolutely nailed it. This camera looks incredible. The X-T3 features not only a new sensor, the Fujifilm X-Trans 4, but also the new X-Processor 4 which is both more powerful and more energy efficient. They've designed this new sensor with 425 phase-detection autofocus points that cover the entire frame. They've also delivered a mirrorless camera that shoots 4k/60p video at 10bit. New Features: • Low illuminance limit of PDAF is now -3EV from -1EV • New Sports Finder Mode – features blackout-free, high-speed continuous shooting (30fps crop electronic shutter, 11 fps mechanical shutter) • New Pre-shooting function, starts recording when you press the shutter half way (up to 20 frames pre, 20 frames actual, total of 40 frames to play with) • Standard ISO: 160 to 12800 • EVF – 0.5 type organic finder – 3.69 million dots – 0.75x • LCD screen – 3.0, 1.04 million dots • 3 way tilt screen (no forward facing) • touch panel • 4k / 60p • 4:2:0 10 bit video in camera • 4:2:2 10 bit HDMI output • Hybrid Log Gamma by firmware update in 2018 • Simultaneous film simulation/f-log output by firmware in 2018 Music is from Epidemic Sound. Oh Canon…
Today Canon released the Canon EOS R, full-frame mirrorless camera. This is an entirely new lens mount for Canon and so an entirely new system. Canon has been pretty quiet over the last few years and Sony has made it quite obvious that the competition has fallen behind. Canon also announced 4 lenses - a 24-105mm, 28-70mm, 35mm and a 50mm. Is the Canon system enough to compete with the Nikon Z6 and Z7? Does it compete with Sony? Lets break it down. The Canon EOS R • 30MP full frame sensor • Dual Pixel Raw, micro-adjustment, bokeh shift and ghosting reduction • 5,655 selectable AF points • 8fps burst rate with one-shot AF • 5fps burst rate with servo AF/AE • 1 SD card slot – UHS-II compatible • UGD 4k up to 25/30p – 1.6x crop • Canon log profile • 4k uncompressed 10 bit HDMI output • HDR movie, 4k Time-lapse movie • Focus Peaking / Focus Distance Indicator • 3.1″ vari-angle, 2.1 million dot LCD with touch control • GPS via phone app • Wi-fi/Bluetooth • LP-E6 / LP-E6N Battery And unfortunately way too many "gotchas" on these features. Fujifilm X-T100 :: The New Best Deal In Photography?
Fujifilm were kind enough to send me the new X-T100 to check out. This might be the best deal in photography. The Fujifilm X-T100 is a budget conscious, mirrorless camera designed to fit Fujifilm X-Mount lenses. Clearly there are some things that are held back to make this camera affordable but almost all the features and the image quality you expect from Fujifilm is there. I was actually extremely impressed with the X-T100. If you're on a budget, its a great camera to start with and spend the extra money on lenses. • Mirrorless APS-C camera design • Fuji Image Quality is on point • Supports XF lenses and leaves money left over to buy them • Excellent all around camera for photographers at any level Music is from Epidemic Sound. How to get YOUR film on NETFLIX
The secret to getting your film on Netflix is the question. Brett Culp is a filmmaker and speaker. He's one of the most positive people I know. Its quite infectious. Brett has made 2 films that have been picked up by Netflix - Legends of the Knight and Look to the Sky. Both films are about positive stories and use the idea of superheros as a catalyst for positive social change. In this video we discuss • Finding your voice • Making a positive impact • Creating something the world needs • Creating a movement around a film and not just a movie • Our ability to change the world

DJI Mavic 2 Pro :: The Flying Hasselblad!!
The DJI Mavic Pro 2 is the latest drone from DJI. It features a Hasselblad camera, 1 inch sensor, Hasselblad Natural Color Solution and a 10-bit Dlog-M color profile. Today DJI has announced 2 new models in the DJI Mavic series, the Mavic 2 Pro and the Mavic 2 Zoom. DJI were kind enough to send me the Mavic 2 Pro. I was really excited to see how the new camera and 1 inch sensor delivered image quality and I was not disappointed. The footage is amazing. The new camera and sensor not only look incredible, but the extend the range of what you are able to do with this drone. You get 14 EV of dynamic range and an incredible 10-bit, 4k video file with the option of HLG or Dlog-M picture profiles. These offer an incredible range for grading your footage in post and making it look fabulous. The Mavic 2 Pro features: • 4k, 10-bit video • Hasselblad camera system and color profile • 1" sensor (same size as the Sony RX100 series cameras) • OcuSync 2.0 (1080p video streamed to your phone in real time) • 31 minutes of flight time • ActiveTrack 2.0 • Hyperlapse • Omnidirectional Obstacle Sensing (6 directions) • Hyperlight • HDR imaging • Panorama stitching in-camera

Dear Nikon
This week, Nikon is expected to announce their new full frame mirrorless system with the Nikon Z7 and the Nikon Z6. Over the last few years we've seen Fujifilm and Sony develop some really interesting mirrorless camera systems. Panasonic and Olypmus have had mirrorless cameras with their micro 4/3 system. The next month is going to be very interesting in terms of camera announcements from Nikon, followed immediately by Canon and then rumors say Sony will follow with another as well. But the interesting newcomer is Nikon. Nikon failed with their last mirrorless attempt - the Nikon 1. So far we know there are likely 2 camera bodies they will announce as well as 3 lenses and an adapter for the older F mount lenses. Will this be enough to compete with Sony and Fuji who already have fully developed systems? These are my thoughts as to what Nikon need to succeed: • Develop a sensor that gives us dynamic range like we're seeing with Medium Format Cameras • Develop an autofocus system that competes with Sony's Eye AF • Develop some actually interesting lenses, not just generic f/2.8 zooms • Provide some legitimate video options - 4k, high frame rate, log profiles and 10-bit. • Find a niche and figure out what will make people want to use Nikon This video is sponsored by Squarespace. 6 DIY STORAGE HACKS in 90 seconds for Cameras and Lenses!!
Organize your gear with these 6 ideas from household items. Photographers end up with a lot of cameras and lenses. If your gear is taking up too much space or lives all over the house, I've got some tips for you on how you can get it organized and ready for use at all times. All of these storage devices are repurposed from items you can get at the store and are affordable. Watch the video to… • Organize your lenses so they are ready for use • Store your cameras where you can get to them without taking up an entire counter surface • Convert a pantry shelf designed for can goods to store all of your lenses • Use a modular shelf system that's customizable • Use a hook system for camera straps, bags, or backpacks Music is from Epidemic Sound. The studio is trashed!
I've been in this studio space for the last 3 years and I'll admit that in my haste of moving in I did a pretty poor job of organizing. The clutter has finally caught up with me and its time for a studio makeover! I thought it would be interesting to show you what I'm working on because as photographers, we tend to accumulate a lot of stuff. Identifying the clutter is the hardest part but once we have this figured out its fairly easy to get cleaned up and organized. Watch this video to identify clutter and find storage solutions: Cameras and Lenses Random Cables Consumables (film, paper, SD cards etc) Accessories (tripods, grip equipment etc) Books (Photography books and mail sent by viewers) Flat Storage (prints, negatives, paper work) Music is from Epidemic Sound. Why Sony is absolutely KILLING it right now
Love them or hate them, Sony has come to a point with their alpha series mirrorless camera lineup where they are dominating the mirrorless market. So much so that Nikon and Canon are aggressively designing mirrorless systems of their own. As someone who's had faith in Sony since the early days of e-mount, I want to share a few thoughts on what differentiates a mirrorless camera from a traditional DSLR. It goes way beyond the fact that the mirror is gone so the camera can be smaller. Its a system-wide approach and I think this will shed a little bit of light on what Canon and Nikon are facing putting together their own systems. The ONE thing every photographer should be doing :: Calibration with the Datacolor Spyder5
Check out Datacolor's Spyder5PRO:: http://bit.ly/ArtofP_Spyder Use the promo code "TED" at checkout for a 15% discount (Valid through 9/30/2018) This video is sponsored by Datacolor. Calibrating your display is probably the most important thing that every photographer should be doing, but for whatever reason most don't. In this video I'll show you how you can use tools such as the Spyder5 and the SpyderCheckr to calibrate both your monitor and cameras as well for consistent and accurate color throughout your entire workflow. Color calibration establishes a baseline for all of the color and edit work that you do in Adobe Lightroom or Photoshop. It keeps colors consistent so the reds in the print are the same reds you saw on your screen. The blue saturation is the same on the page as it was in your intention of the edit. We've talked a lot about the "photographers intention" in the last few videos and we are moving into color manipulation in the editing process with Adobe Lightroom and Capture One. Calibration is absolutely essential moving forward as if we don't calibrate, we are just guessing. We don't want to guess, we want to make deliberate and accurate work that matters.

Guess who I got for the ARTIST SERIES??!
I'm currently filming for Season 3 of the Artist Series. This past week I've been in Atlanta - you know where they film Queer Eye, Atlanta, Greenleaf, Flip or Flop Atlanta, etc… Well my little show is nowhere near as successful but hey - I'm in Season 3! This week I've been working with Bastiaan Woudt who is a brilliant, young photographer from Amsterdam. Bastiaan is currently in the US for his gallery debut of his recent project Mukono which is a beautiful project shot in Uganda to bring awareness and fresh water resources to the local people. WORLD CUP lens of the future :: Sony FE 400mm f/2.8 GM Telephoto lens
Since we can't support the USA in the World Cup, the next best thing is clearly the brand new Sony FE 400mm f/2.8 G Master telephoto lens! Sony has officially stepped into the professional sports photography arena with its new zoom lens. Weighing over 2 lbs lighter than the Nikon 400mm f/2.8 E FL ED VR is 11.47 and the Canon EF 400mm f/2.8L USM, the Sony 400mm GM also features a more balanced design, sharper image rendition and faster autofocus supporting the Sony A9's 20 frames per second shooting speed. This lens is extremely significant, not only being better than the competition optically and mechanically, but it also represents what Sony has been striving for with mirrorless cameras providing the best in class system for sports and wildlife photography. Sony contacted me a few weeks ago and asked if I'd like to come to New Jersey to photograph soccer. I jumped at the opportunity to photograph the New York Red Bulls play FC Dallas. So the USA did not make it far in the World Cup, but this shows us what the possibilities that the future holds - not only for the World Cup but also for photography. While Sony did bring me to New Jersey to test this lens, this video is not sponsored and the opinions here are my own. The WIDEST lens Hasselblad has produced to date :: Hasselblad 21mm f/4 review
The Hasselblad 21mm f/4 is the widest lens Hasselblad has produced to date. The closest focal range this would come close to would be the Fujifilm 23mm GFX. This lens has a full frame equivalent to about 17mm - it is wide. Its also extremely impressive in terms of performance. This is a difficult lens to design within the limitations of portability, price, and fitting in with the rest of the system. The engineers at Hasselblad have done a brilliant job with this lens. Its very much a technical lens with incredible distortion control and edge to edge sharpness. The 21mm f/4 is perfect for architectural photography - particularly interiors and tight spaces that can be challenging to photograph. The lens features 13 elements in 9 groups, 2 aspherical elements, an aperture range of f/4 to f/32, central lens shutter with up to 1/2000 sec flash sync, internal focusing with manual focus override and a front filter threading of 77mm. Hasselblad were kind enough to loan me one from the first production run for a week to test. The Alternate Take :: Steve McCurry's Afghan Girl Revisited
In researching further about Steve McCurry's Afghan Girl, I found an interesting alternate take of the image as well as the story behind the photograph. When we're talking about the photographer's intention, this becomes a very broad discussion. We're talking about composition, color theory and the technical things that produce the finished photograph, but there's a broader space. These are all things we have to learn in photography but when it comes to getting the shot, we have to forget all about the rule of thirds, the rule of odds and all the other technical compositional tools and we go for realizing the intent. Steve McCurry had a very clear intent when he first saw the Afghan Girl. This was expressed consciously and subconsciously throughout the entire process and ended up being one of the most famous National Geographic covers in the history of the magazine. HIGHLY recommended book of Steve McCurry Portraits: https://amzn.to/2y9f8FJ Check out the interview with Steve here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BIgx-nkFL6c AOP T-Shirts! https://aop.threadless.com/ Music from Epidemic Sound: https://goo.gl/v5wWKr

Minimalist COLOR in your photographs
Lets talk again about photographing with intent. In this video I want to talk about what happens in front of your lens and how you can get really effective results by limiting your color palette. Steve McCurry's Afghan girl is an incredible example of this. Its not only a famous photograph but it has become iconic over the years. Everything in this composition supports the eyes including color. McCurry took this image on with a Nikon FM2, 105mm f/2.5 lens and used Kodachrome 64. While many contest that this is a definitive Kodachrome image, I actually argue that its the selection of colors that was important and keeping them reduced to essentially 3 - red, green and the skin-tone. What is the photographers intention?
Intention is the point of all photography. How do you intend for your work to look? The intention of the photographer starts with the idea, concept and composition of the image and its carried all the way through to the final printed work. Photography today has changed in some ways because we tend to publish our work for screen-based devices, but the intention of the photographer - or your intent shouldn't be sacrificed. William Eggleston, Ernst Haas, Luigi Ghirri and Saul Leiter were all color photographers with different styles and different looks to their work. They represent the best photographers of their time. Yet they all shot on Kodachrome. So why does their work look vastly different from one another yet they were using the same film stock? The answer is in the intent. Each had a unique intention to how their work would look, what it would say and how it would communicate to the viewer. The answer is in the printing stage of photography. This is where decisions were made that created unique works. Sony Kando 2.0 :: Photography Creative Getaway
Sony Kando 2.0 is described by Sony as "Your most inspiring and fulfilling creative experience this year." Kando 2.0 brings together Sony Artisans, Sony Collective members as well as press and it is open to the public. I was honored to get invited this year and I ended up filming 5 interviews with some really accomplished photographers and filmmakers. Kando also offers classes, panel discussions and shooting opportunities around Monterey California. So in this first video - I'll give you a little vlog based around what we were doing there. The Monterey Bay Aquarium was probably my favorite activity - the place is beautiful and extremely photographic. Sony were nice enough to loan me an A7r III as well as several lenses - the 85mm 1.4 GM, the 16-35mm GM and the 12-24mm G. Studio camera setup - FOCUS STACK macro photography
A few weeks ago I had the opportunity to visit Digital Transitions in New York City to do some photography in their studio. In this video, Doug Peterson shows us his method of focus stacking on the Phase One XF with the IQ3 Trichromatic back. You can do this with any camera. The challenge of macro photography is working with an extremely shallow depth of field. Phase One will do automatic calculations for the photos you want to stack but this can be done manually with any camera. The software we used for stitching the final image is called Zerene Stacker. It does have a 30 day trial if you want to try it out. https://zerenesystems.com/cms/stacker Art of Photography shirts: https://aop.threadless.com Music from Epidemic Sound: https://goo.gl/v5wWKr

Your camera is better than Ansel's
Every famous photograph was made with a camera less advanced than the one you are using now. This is a quote I read a few months ago that's stuck with me for quite some time. Ansel Adams didn't have gear as advanced as what we have now. Neither did Henri Cartier-Bresson or W Eugene Smith or Saul Leiter. Photographers tend to put equipment on a pedestal. We blame our shortcomings as photographers on the gear that we have. Sony, Nikon and Canon all market to us in that way - you need the latest and the greatest because your photography depends on it! The truth is that important work… work that matters - doesn't have anything to do with the technology we have access to. It has everything to do with what we have to say and communicate visually. Photography is an act of speaking. Art of Photography Shirts: https://aop.threadless.com/ Music from Epidemic Sound: https://goo.gl/v5wWKr

The ONE best use for Lightroom when traveling
Adobe Lightroom Mobile is great at letting you take better photos while traveling. LANDSCAPE Photography with the PHASE ONE IQ3 Trichromatic
Digital Transitions was kind enough to loan me a Phase One XF camera with the IQ3 Trichromatic back for my time in Arizona. Matt Beaty took me off roading through Arizona to get some epic landscape photos and test out the Phase One. The Phase One IQ3 is a 101 megapixel, medium format back. It uses a custom bayer filter design that separates Red, Green and Blue light in a new way that other digital cameras do no. In the RGB spectrum, there is always some degree of overlay. The Phase One design separates these a bit more than conventional cameras. The cost is about 1/3 an f-stop of light but the results are stunning. Photography Portfolio REVIEWS :: Flagstaff AZ
First photography vlog from Arizona. I've been invited to come up and participate in a day long photography review session at Hidden Light LLC in Flagstaff. Amazing day filled with some wonderful photography and new friends. Participants arrived in sets of 4 throughout the day and each got 20 min with each reviewer. In all I got to critique 14 portfolios throughout the day and some really wonderful photographs. I was most impressed with photographers who worked in series projects, telling a story though multiple photos. Music from Epidemic Sound: https://goo.gl/v5wWKr

MAJOR Adobe Updates :: Adobe Color and Why It Matters
Adobe are launching some major updates for photography applications. I think these are the most significant updates they've put out in the last 10 years. They all hinge around the new camera RAW calibration profile known as Adobe Color. A camera RAW calibration profile is the first step in rendering a camera raw image before you begin to edit. Lets look at how this will improve not only your image quality, but also speeding up your workflow allowing you to get better results in Adobe Lightroom FAST!

Get started FAST in Capture One Pro
In this photography editing tutorial, we're going to look at one of my favorite editing software applications - Capture One. Capture One is an incredible application for editing RAW files. Compared to Adobe Lightroom it offers much more power and options however the user interface is quite different. Here are 5 tips to get you started working in Capture One Pro faster. If you're used to using Adobe Lightroom, Capture One can seem like a higher learning curve. The interface is quite different, but if you learn a few basic things it can get you going quickly with photography editing. In this video I'll cover sessions vs catalog, the customizable interface, working tools, adjustment layers and output options. HELICOPTER Photoshoot :: Valley of Fire
For our final photo shoot with the Sony A7 III, we boarded helicopters and headed to Valley of Fire State Park in the Mojave Desert to see what the cameras could do in both aerial photography and landscape photography settings. While this footage was filmed last week, while I was editing this video yesterday - the news came across about the Helicopter crash in New York City. A similar photo expedition made an emergency landing in the East River which resulted in the deaths of all five passengers. My heart goes out to the families of the victims in this horrible tragedy. What its like to go to the SONY A7 III Event
I was very fortunate to be invited to the Sony A73 press event in Las Vegas. This was the first time I was invited and I was absolutely humbled to be there. Of course the big announcement was the Sony A73 and as a press member I got to borrow a pre-production camera for the next 3 days. Sony set up a number of shoots where we could test the limits of the A73. This is what its like to go to a Sony press event. This video was filmed on the Sony A7III (footage after the announcement), Sony a6300 and RX100 V (before the announcement) Pre-order your's here: B&H https://goo.gl/N21gwh Amazon http://amzn.to/2G20Re3 Other YouTubers in this video (order of appearance) Jordan Drake (Camera Store TV) https://www.youtube.com/user/TheCameraStoreTV Gordon Laing https://www.youtube.com/user/cameralabs Ken Rockwell http://www.kenrockwell.com/ Jared Polin https://www.youtube.com/user/JaredPolin Stephen Eckert (works with Jared) Eric Rossi (helped me film much of this video) https://www.youtube.com/user/EricRossi25 T-Shirts here -> https://aop.threadless.com/ Music from Epidemic Sound: https://goo.gl/v5wWKr

40 Sony A7III's dropped in the desert
After the Sony A7 III announcement event, Sony set up a series of photo shoots for us to test the limits of what the camera can do. Today we are in the Vegas desert with dune buggies to test the new A7 III, plus we get to drive them and have some fun. I have to say, Sony has some serious confidence dropping 40 mirrorless cameras into the desert for a shoot, but we had a lot of fun on this one. Why you will LOVE the SONY A7 III
I had the honor of being invited to the Sony A7 III announcement in Las Vegas this week. Rather than doing a specs video, I sat down with Kevin Raber from Luminous Landscape to talk about the Sony A7 III as well as what this camera means in the development of full frame mirrorless cameras of which Sony has been the leader. The FUJIFILM X-E3 is INCREDIBLE
I recently bought the Fujifilm X-E3 after trying out both the Fujifilm X-T3 and the Fujifilm X-Pro2. While I really liked the two top end models, the X-E3 offered the same image quality in a smaller package. And its priced well under $1000. This month the rumored Fujifilm X-H1 will likely be announced as another top of the line so it should be interesting to see what it offers. What you DON'T know about RAW image files :: Lightroom vs Capture One
One image, 2 editors… why are the resulting images different? I've compared the calibration algorithms in Adobe Lightroom and Capture One and the results are extremely interesting. To understand the resulting photos, you have to understand a few things about RAW format and how it is interpreted. Adobe Lightroom has been the market leading software for image editing for what seems like forever. But we are entering a time where we actually have choices and depending on your priorities as a photographer you can choose what image editor works best for the photography you make. Medium Format Lenses and the Hasselblad X1D
The Hasselblad X1D is an interesting camera for Medium Format because of its size. The X1D is much smaller than the studio types of models most digital medium format cameras come in. So with a camera that's designed for portability, lenses are a concern because of the sensor size. How do you design a lens that is as compact and portable as the camera itself? Hasselblad currently offer 4 lenses - a 30mm f/3.5, 45mm f/3.5, 90mm f/3.2 and a 120mm macro. I had the opportunity to work with three of these lenses on the Hasselblad X1D over the last month and I'm excited to share the results with you. $2,000 camera with 16 LENSES?!? Photography with the Light L16
This is my long awaited review of the Light L16. Announced 2 years ago it is finally out. The Light L16 combines 16 lenses in a mobile style body. Light say this is aimed to replace a traditional DSLR and a bag of lenses. The Light L16 uses computational imaging to get to the final image. When you make a photograph, it uses multiple lenses to compose the photo. Up to 10 images are combined and then stitched together in post production. On the widest angle setting this produces an 81 Megapixel image. So how does it work and what do the images look like? Music from Epidemic Sound: https://goo.gl/v5wWKr
