In this episode, we welcome back our good friend Gus Brackett—but this time, he turns the tables and starts interviewing us! It’s always a pleasure to have Gus on The Art Box, bringing his wit, storytelling, and deep-rooted knowledge of the cowboy way of life. Raised on a working cattle ranch spanning the wide-open spaces of Southwestern Idaho and Northeastern Nevada, Gus was on horseback by age five and sold his first steer at ten. His love for storytelling started in a one-room schoolhouse, where he first penned cowboy tales inspired by the rich oral history passed down from his grandfather, Noy Brackett, and legendary cowboys like Uncle Rolly Patrick and Truman Clark. In 2010, Gus began writing the Badger Thurston series, chronicling the grit, humor, and adventure of the West. Today, he still lives and works on the same ranch where he was raised, serving as Chairman of the Board of the very school where his storytelling journey began. Born and raised on the Crow Indian Reservation in Montana, he grew up riding horses, ranching, and deeply immersed in Native traditions and the cowboy way of life. His poetry, often performed in both English and Crow, captures the vast landscapes of the West, the struggles and joys of ranching, and the spiritual connection between people, land, and horses. Henry is known for his lyrical, rhythmic style, often performing his poetry on horseback, bringing an authenticity and deep-rooted passion to his work. His books include Horse Tracks, Wolf Teeth, and Ride the Wind, reflecting themes of survival, identity, and the beauty of the open plains. Earlier this year, Linda and Steve found themselves at Core Contemporary, chatting with Nancy Good when she casually mentioned synesthesia—a concept that, at the time, went right over our heads. Later, guest Monica Martinez brought it up again, and Laura Hales from Scottsdale Arts took it a step further, sharing her plans to curate an entire exhibition on the subject. Today on The Art Box, we welcomed local Mesquite author Sandi Randelle to our STEAM Center studio for an engaging conversation about her work and creative journey. Sandi holds a BA in English from Eastern New Mexico University and an MA in English Literature from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. A native Floridian, she now calls Mesquite, NV, home as she continues crafting captivating stories. Sandi has published three novels, including two installments of her dark fantasy vampire trilogy, Of Blood & Consequences: Of Plight and Promises and Of Dark & Bright. She’s currently hard at work on the final book, Of Men & Empires, which is slated for release next summer. We enjoyed a delightful time chatting with Sydney Carnevale-Baker about her journey and love for the tiniest of creatures. Sydney Carnevale-Baker is a Las Vegas-based photographer with a knack for finding the hidden gems of nature, even when those gems are mostly bugs and sand. Armed with a camera, an unrelenting sense of adventure, and possibly a GPS to find her way out of the desert, she loves getting outdoors to uncover the wonders that most people wouldn't even notice unless they were lost and had to wait for rescue. Happy New Year. Let's start off 2025 with a Clouds in the Sand podcast we recorded in June of 2023. We have enlisted Addie to migrate selected Clouds episodes over to the Art Box this year and this her first production edit. This particular episode isn’t entirely about art—at least not in the traditional sense—but we firmly believe that art is everywhere creativity thrives. By that measure, our friend Carol Corbet is truly an artist. Her boundless creativity and zest for life shine through, making her story one worth hearing. Here we go. A few weekends ago Steve was ever so fortunate to meet Carol at a Bureau of Land Management event in Basin and Range National Monument. We spent the first day in a group together focused on identifying flora throughout the Monument, what a fun time. Both of us being of the talkative type we quickly decided that Carol should be on our podcast. The sweetheart she is, she grabbed her partner Sue and drove to Mesquite on her birthday to chat with Linda, Dana and I. We believe you will enjoy this episode. Chris stopped by the Mesquite Works STEAM Center recording studio on her way to an evening of dark sky gazing at Gold Butte National Monument. Both Chris and Steve are Volunteer Wilderness Stewards for the Bureau of Land Management in Washington County, Utah. But Chris's story doesn't end there—she is so much more. In her professional career, Chris worked as a Neonatal Nurse, devoting her life to the care of infants and their families. Now retired, she channels her energy into her passion for public lands, spending much of her time volunteering or embarking on extraordinary canyoneering and backpacking adventures with her son, Jeremy. In March 0f 2023, Linda and Steve launched a new podcast called Clouds in the Sand, shifting the focus from pure art to a broader exploration of the humanities. The first episode featured a conversation with our friend Rex, whom we met at the Mesquite Library Learning Center. Back then, this was where we recorded our episodes before moving into our current studio at the Mesquite Works STEAM Center. Rex, an avid and voracious reader, was often found sitting outside our door, immersed in one of the countless books he always seemed to have on hand. Over time, we formed a deep friendship with him, sharing many meaningful conversations about life, literature, art, and creativity, sometimes in the library, and other times over soup at Table of Contents. As we look ahead to 2025 and continue to grow The Art Box podcast, we have decided to retire Clouds in the Sand. However, we plan to preserve some of its episodes within The Art Box collection. We had the distinct pleasure of sitting down with Withanee Andersen , co-author of Walk of Ages. Join us for an inspiring conversation as Withanee shares the story behind her incredible 131-mile hike from Mount Whitney, the highest point in the continental U.S., to Badwater Basin, the lowest point in Death Valley National Park. This journey, inspired by her father, Jim Andersen, is as heartfelt as it is extraordinary. Steve capped off his trip to Scottsdale with an enlightening visit with Lauren O'Connell, curator of contemporary art at the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art (SMoCA) in Arizona. The inspiring and thought-provoking conversation left him smiling all the way home on the drive back to Mesquite. Lauren is a curator, writer, and educator focusing on contemporary art. Lauren previously held positions at San Francisco Museum of Modern Art in the Architecture and Design Department and UC Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive where she organized Architecture of Life (2016) with former director Lawrence Rinder and worked on numerous MATRIX projects and collection shows. ​ Her curatorial practice is rooted in artist-centric projects that expand and challenge artistic medium, critical dialogue, relational experiences, and art historical cannons. She has worked on special projects with artists including Tarek Atoui, Kristin Bauer, Diedrick Brackens, York Chang, Mimi O Chun, Martin Soto Climent, Otobong Nkanga, Kameelah Janan Rasheed, Jean Shin, Anna Tsouhlarakis, and Qiu Zhijie. O'Connell's research positions contemporary art as an avenue to examine social reality through epistemological examination, speculative and historical (re)formations, mythology, and constructed environments. Her research process involves exhibition-making, artist engagement, and community-building. O'Connell is the author of Language in Times of Miscommunication: Art Critical of Social Reality (SMoCA, 2023) and co-author of Dorothy Fratt: Works (Radius Books, 2023). Mesquite had the honor of hosting Clark County, Nevada Poet Laureate Ms. AyeVee (Ashley Vargas) last Tuesday. She captivated the audience as the November guest for the Brown Bag Cultural Series at the Mesquite Fine Arts Center, followed by a special visit to the Mesquite Works STEAM Center to record the milestone 250th episode of The Art Box podcast. Steve first connected with Ashley during the creation of the Modern Desert Markings project, an exhibition at the Marjorie Barrick Museum of Art sponsored by Nevadans for Cultural Preservation through grants from the Nevada Arts Council and Nevada Humanities. Her evocative work, Poem for the Ages, was prominently featured in the exhibit and revisited in The Art Box Episode 91. She has also been recognized by the Las Vegas Book Festival, Nevada Public Radio, & The US Congress for advancing the cause of literacy & extraordinary literary achievement. Suzie recently had the honor of speaking with four incredible cancer survivors at The Mesquite Cancer Help Society, a compassionate resource founded in 2001 by Yoli Bell and Anna Medlin. Located at 150 N Yucca St #36, this center offers cancer patients vital guidance, financial assistance, and emotional and mental support. Here, individuals receive the tools they need to manage their care and the encouragement to embrace the journey of survivorship. In unity, the spirit to fight and hope thrives! We’ve broadened our search for talent to Florida’s East Coast, featuring young entrepreneur and artist Sophia Perez. A senior at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, Sophia is the owner of DesignsbySoph and actively volunteers at her local library and youth camps, where she teaches painting. It’s been over a year since we last caught up with our episode 98 guest, the remarkable Alina Lindquist. Suzie is coming to you live from the lively and exciting Mesquite Rotary Club Mud Volleyball tournament! Teams are here battling it out in the mud, but it’s clear that the real win is the fun had by everyone—players, friends, and family cheering from the sidelines. As Deb mentioned earlier, this event serves as the primary fundraiser for the Mesquite Rotary Club. A huge thank you goes out to Eureka Casino for providing the playing fields and to the many dedicated volunteers who prepare the mud pits, set up the nets, check in players, and keep the games running smoothly. It feels like so many of our wonderful guests come into our orbit through Nancy Good's Core Contemporary Gallery, and Shahab was no exception. Brenda Slocumb the Executive Director of Friends of Gold Butte dropped by our STEAM Center recording studio to fill us in on activity plans for Fall and Winter 24/25. Gold Butte National Monument, located in southeastern Nevada, is a vast, 300,000-acre area known for its stunning desert landscapes, rugged sandstone formations, and rich cultural history. The monument features dramatic red rock vistas, petroglyphs, and ancient rock art left by the Ancestral Puebloans. It's a haven for outdoor enthusiasts, offering opportunities for hiking, camping, and exploring its unique geological formations like the Whitney Pocket and Little Finland. Wildlife, including desert bighorn sheep and rare desert tortoises, thrive in this protected area, which serves as an important conservation site while preserving its historical and ecological treasures.
