Ep 335The Art Box - Episode 334 - Why the Humanities Matter—Now More Than Ever
In this special episode of The Art Box, Sandi and Steve sit down with two powerful voices in the humanities: Bobbie Ann Howell from Nevada Humanities and Kase Johnstun from Utah Humanities. Together, they explore the vital role the humanities play in shaping the cultural and civic fabric of underserved and rural communities across the West. In an age of shifting priorities and tightening budgets, their conversation sheds light on what’s at stake when public funding for the humanities is threatened, and what’s lost when stories go untold. Bobbie Ann and Kase share firsthand examples of how humanities programs, ranging from oral history projects and local exhibits to writing workshops and community conversations, foster connection, identity, and resilience in places often overlooked on the national stage. Whether it’s preserving Indigenous history, amplifying rural voices, or supporting local authors and artists, the humanities provide more than enrichment, they offer a lifeline. This episode is a timely reminder that storytelling, dialogue, and access to cultural resources are not luxuries, but essentials for thriving communities. Please reach out to your local, state, and national representatives and encourage them to champion and fund the humanities, because access to culture, history, and storytelling should belong to every community. But his artistry doesn’t stop at the brush—Bob is also an accomplished and published poet, weaving together the visual and the verbal in uniquely Western ways. In this episode of The Art Box, we sit down with Adrianne Beard, a creative cornerstone of Main Street Goldfield, manager of the whimsical Rusty Cove Boutique, and an artist whose work dances between the intuitive and the intricately imagined. Adrianne is a gifted jewelry maker, a passionate chronicler of her dreams, and the visionary behind a hauntingly beautiful series of miniature rooms. Built with tweezers and tiny found objects gathered from the wilds of Nevada, her miniatures are deeply inspired by the post-apocalyptic world of The Last of Us, echoing themes of survival, decay, and quiet resilience. Each scene tells a story, balancing eerie stillness with stunning detail. We explore Adrianne’s role in Goldfield’s creative revival, her thoughts on dreamwork as an artistic compass, and the joy she finds in making small things speak volumes. Ep 328The Art Box - Episode 327 - Art, Thought, and Augmented Realities with Zoë Camper
Thanks in part to generous support of the Nevada Arts Council The Art Box had the distinct pleasure of sitting down with Las Vegas-based creator Zoë Camper. We caught up with her in a lively hallway (please pardon the occasional comings and goings—and those charmingly squeaky chairs) at the Historic 5th Street School, just hours before the U.S. debut of the exhibition she co-curated with Julie Samuels: Creativity Is a New Formula for Life, presented by the Augmented Society RSA Thematic Network. Zoë is a dynamic force of creative energy—her work spans across disciplines, often inviting not just observation but deep thought. In addition to her leadership within the Augmented Society RSA Thematic Network, she also serves as a director of the Goldwell Open Air Museum in Rhyolite, Nevada. Settle in and enjoy our conversation with one of the most innovative and thought-provoking minds in the world of contemporary art. Click here for details and hours for the exhibition: Creativity Is a New Formula for Life. Picture is Julie Samuels (left) and Zoë (right). at opening of Creativity Is a New Formula for Life. Zoë mentioned the word Autotellic (adjective) refers to a person or activity that is self-motivated or self-fulfilling, done for its own sake rather than for an external reward.

With decades of experience and a deep connection to both tradition and experimentation, Ben shares insights into his personal practice, the people who shaped him, and what it means to be part of a creative lineage rooted in both place and passion. Ben talked about a favorite potter Peter Voulkos and we have provided a link so you can learn more about him.
Ep 326The Art Box – Episode 325 – Next Door in Tuscarora: Sidne Teske’s Desert View
Welcome to our fourteenth episode of The Art Box recorded at the Tuscarora Pottery School thanks in part to a grant by the Nevada Arts Council. Living right in Tuscarora, Sidne brings a unique perspective to life in this remote artist community. We talk about the rhythm of small-town creativity, her deep connection to the land, and how her pastel work reflects both place and mood. With a quiet strength and a generous spirit, Sidne offers insight into what it means to live artfully, just a stone’s throw from one of Nevada’s most storied creative outposts. Welcome to our lucky thirteenth episode of The Art Box recorded at the Tuscarora Pottery School thanks in part to a grant by the Nevada Arts Council. In this episode Box, we’re joined by Taylor Ford, the 2025 Artist-in-Residence at the Tuscarora Pottery School, and the heart of this spring’s session. Along with her loyal pup Ruth, Taylor keeps things running smoothly, welcoming guests, guiding students, and keeping an eye on both the critters by day and the ghosts by night that roam this legendary high desert outpost. Taylor shares what it means to live and work on the Tuscarora property full-time, what fuels her own studio practice (including the corner where Steve proudly snapped a black-and-white photo of her at her wheel), and how she manages to keep the studio cheerful, grounded, and full of momentum. She may not be related to President Gerald Ford, but she’s got a story about that too. Warm, funny, and always in motion, Taylor brings a unique energy to a place already steeped in legacy and creativity.
Ep 324The Art Box – Episode 323 - Pottery and Presence: Kerry at the Wheel
Welcome to our twelfth episode of The Art Box recorded at the Tuscarora Pottery School thanks in part to a grant by the Nevada Arts Council. In this episode of The Art Box, we welcome Kerry Holscher, an electronic engineer and pottery student from Boise, who made her first visit to the Tuscarora Pottery School during the spring 2025 session. While new to the Tuscarora experience herself, Kerry is no stranger to its legacy, all of her children studied pottery with Jerry Hendershot in high school and have each made their own creative journeys to this desert retreat. Now it’s Kerry’s turn at the wheel, bringing both her technical mindset and artistic curiosity to the high desert studio. In our conversation, she reflects on what it’s like to step into a space so meaningful to her family, how engineering informs her approach to clay, and why it’s never too late to embrace the joy of making. It’s a beautiful story of connection, craft, and coming full circle, one generation (and now another) shaped by the spirit of Tuscarora.
Ep 323The Art Box – Episode 322 - From Field Notes to Clay Notes: Mandie Carr at Tuscarora
Welcome to our eleventh episode of The Art Box recorded at the Tuscarora Pottery School thanks in part to a grant by the Nevada Arts Council. In this episode of The Art Box, we sit down with Mandie Carr, a USGS scientist who moved from the warmth of Florida to the high desert winters of Boise, Idaho, and discovered pottery as a way to navigate the colder months. Mandie joined the spring 2025 session at the Tuscarora Pottery School, bringing with her a methodical, inquisitive approach shaped by her scientific background. At the time of our conversation, Mandie was still waiting to see her pieces emerge from the soda kiln, but she had already filled pages with notes, carefully tracking each form, firing detail, and glaze combination. It’s a conversation about precision, patience, and the quiet satisfaction of learning by doing, all set against the backdrop of Tuscarora’s creative rhythm.
Ep 322The Art Box - Episode 321 - Learning Together: Summer & Corbin’s Pottery Adventure
Welcome to our tenth episode of The Art Box recorded at the Tuscarora Pottery School thanks in part to a grant by the Nevada Arts Council. In this heartwarming episode of The Art Box, we’re joined by Summer and Corbin Kisner, a mother-and-son duo who attended the spring 2025 session at the Tuscarora Pottery School. At just 10 years old, Corbin brought youthful curiosity and a fearless approach to clay, while Summer, still relatively new to pottery, came eager to learn, building on the skills she’s been developing at Jerry Hendershot’s Parched Earth Studio in Boise. Together, they share what it was like to step into the rhythm of Tuscarora’s creative flow as a family, finding joy in the quiet desert setting, the challenge of the wheel, and the supportive artist community. It’s a lovely glimpse into what happens when generations create side by side, full of laughter, learning, and lots of clay-covered hands.

In our eighth episode of The Art Box recorded at the Tuscarora Pottery School thanks in part to a grant by the Nevada Arts Council, we chat with Evan Besoushke, a recently graduated high school student with a creative spirit and a scientific mind. Before heading off to study Mechanical Engineering at the University of Utah, Evan chose to spend part of his spring at the Tuscarora Pottery School, diving hands-first into the world of clay and artistic experimentation. We talk about what drew him to pottery, what it felt like to be the youngest member of the workshop, and how this experience has helped shape his perspective on design, structure, and creativity. Whether building with clay or someday with concrete and steel, Evan is already finding ways to bridge the practical with the artistic. It’s a rich conversation about creativity, teaching, and the quiet magic that happens when artists gather in remote places with open minds and muddy hands.
Ep 318The Art Box - Episode 317 - Creative Company: Daejah, Aileen, and the Art of Just Being There
In this episode our sixth during our Tuscarora trip funded by Nevada Arts Council, we take a lighter, more personal turn as I sit down with Daejah, who joined us at the Tuscarora Pottery School not as a student, but as part of the extended creative family. Her father, Casey, was one of the instructors during the week, and Daejah came along for the ride, bringing with her a sense of calm curiosity and the easy energy of summer. She was joined by her best friend Aileen, and while neither took to the wheel, they made the most of their desert retreat: swimming, exploring, chatting with artists, and simply enjoying the rhythm of life in Tuscarora. In this relaxed conversation, we talk about what it’s like to be surrounded by working artists, the quiet charm of the place, and how creative spaces can feel just as welcoming—even when you’re not the one covered in clay.
Ep 317The Art Box - Episode 316 - Teaching Inspiration - Meet Julie Shelton
In the fifth episode of our Tuscarora Pottery School series, made possible in part by a generous grant from the Nevada Arts Council, we sit down with Julie Shelton, a dedicated art teacher from Boise, Idaho. Julie’s time at Tuscarora was both a personal creative retreat and a professional development opportunity. As she reconnected with her own artistic practice, she also explored new techniques and ideas to take back to her classroom and share with her students. It’s a heartfelt conversation about the dual role of being both artist and educator, and the power of stepping away to return renewed. Surrounded by the quiet beauty of Nevada’s high desert, Julie found fresh energy in the studio, new approaches to clay, and a renewed sense of purpose. Our conversation touches on the power of lifelong learning, the balancing act between teaching and creating, and the magic that happens when artists step into unfamiliar spaces to grow. Surrounded by the quiet beauty of Nevada’s high desert, she shares how pottery provides both a creative outlet and a grounding contrast to the precision of architectural design. Gianna’s story is a reminder that sometimes the best way forward is to return to what you love. Thank you to Nevada Arts Council for funding this trip.
Ep 314The Art Box - Episode 313 - Meals, Mud, and Magic: Moments with Vicie Mixer
I had the true pleasure of meeting Vicie Mixer during my time at the Tuscarora Pottery School, where she played the role of indispensable assistant to instructor Jerry Hendershot, though "assistant" hardly captures the magic she brings. From preparing delicious meals to helping students center their clay, from spinning stories to offering quiet encouragement, Vicie was everywhere at once, always adding something special to the experience. She even attempted to teach me how to make a clay whistle (which, I must confess, ended in a spectacularly failed attempt, but that’s on me, not her!). I was grateful she took a few moments to sit down for a short and joyful chat. Vicie Mixer is a respected ceramic artist and teacher with deep roots in the Tuscarora Pottery School community. Known for her skill in wheel-throwing and raku techniques, she has taught alongside Jerry during numerous summer sessions, earning a reputation among students as a patient, generous, and inspiring presence. Vicie now lives part-time in Tuscarora, where she continues to enrich the town’s seasonal art scene with her humor, knowledge, and kindness. Her ongoing involvement reflects the heart of Tuscarora’s legacy, a place where clay, creativity, and community come together under big desert skies. For anyone drawn to the spirit of pottery, Vicie’s presence is a treasure. Thank you Nevada Arts Council for funding.

From the heat of the kiln to the quiet magic of community dinners and shared studio space, our conversation explores what makes Tuscarora such a powerful space for artistic growth. Ep 308The Art Box - Episode 307 - Women in Focus - Meet Tiffany Weems
It took nearly a year of juggling calendars, but Tiffany Weems and I finally found time to sit down for a fun, insightful, and long-awaited podcast conversation. Her leadership has been instrumental in establishing Women in Focus branches in Chicago, St. Louis, and Las Vegas, fostering creative communities across these cities. The Naturally Beautiful exhibition continues until March 28, so please find you way to the Mesquite Fine Arts Center located at 15 W. Mesquite Blvd, Mesquite, Nevada 89027. As a special bonus, the episode begins with Whiterose reading her Artist Profile, which will be featured during her Artist of the Month residency this summer. Be sure to visit the VVAA website for details: mesquitefineartscenter.com There’s no doubt about it, The Art Box loves Whiterose and Floyd, and it doesn’t get any better than hearing them talk about what art means to them. For you enjoyment Whiterose recited her Artist Statement and we include the text of this below. Enjoy. Why do I paint, and have kept at it for the past 4 years? Well, painting is a journey of the soul, akin to a river carving its path through the rugged terrain of existence. Each stroke of the brush becomes a pulse, a heartbeat echoing the artist's innermost thoughts and feelings. Just as a river flows from the depths of the mountains, so too does the artist delve into the caverns of their soul, unearthing the treasures of emotion and memory. The canvas stands as a blank horizon, waiting patiently for the colors to cascade like waterfalls, transforming the stark surface into a vibrant landscape of dreams and fears. In this sacred act, time dissolves, and the artist becomes both the creator and the vessel, channeling the essence of their spirit into a tangible form. As the brush dances across the canvas, it weaves a tapestry of light and shadow. Each color is a note in a symphony, resonating with the depth of the artist's soul, while the canvas serves as an open field where emotions run wild like wildflowers in spring. The act of painting is a dialogue with the universe, where the artist converses with their own heart and, in turn, invites the viewer into this intimate exchange. The strokes may be bold and assertive, or soft and whispering; they speak of courage and vulnerability, capturing the essence of what it means to be alive. In this sacred communion, the artist becomes a storyteller, translating the silent language of the soul into a visual narrative that transcends the barriers of time and space. Ultimately, the finished painting stands as a testament to the artist's journey, a mirror reflecting the countless aspects of the human experience. It invites the observer to embark on their own odyssey, to explore the emotions that lie beneath the surface. Each glance at the canvas reveals new layers, hidden depths, and uncharted territories of feeling, as if the artwork is a living entity, breathing and evolving with every viewing. In this profound exchange, the artist's soul reaches out, intertwining with the viewer's own, forging connections that span generations. The journey of painting, then, is not merely the creation of art but a pilgrimage of the heart, a celebration of life’s complexities, where every brushstroke is a step toward understanding the vast, intricate tapestry of existence.
