Apple Ups Its Sports Game

There’s been lots of news about Apple’s media operations in recent weeks. Much of it concerns sports coverage. We’ve had a standoff with the New York Yankees over who would commentate on last Friday’s matchup with the Red Sox at which it was thought/hoped that Aaron Judge would hit his historic 61st and 62nd home runs of the season. YES Network, owned by the Yankees, wanted their commentators to be there if Judge equalled and/or beat the longstanding record held by Roger Maris. Apple owned the rights to the game and was not prepared to give them up as it looks to make its mark in sports media. Then it emerged that Apple Music is going to be the new sponsor of the Super Bowl halftime show, in a multi-year deal. The first show is going to be in February 2023 and feature Rihanna. It’s a huge moment and it will work very nicely indeed if Apple gets the rights to NFL Sunday Ticket too…Elsewhere, Ted Lasso is dominating the world. Or at least FIFA 23 which is out on Friday. Oprah, however, is leaving the Apple TV+ family. We may still get output from her on the platform, but her overall deal has come to an end and a new one has not been struck.Discussing all this with host Charlotte Henry is podcaster Kelly Guimont.* Lights, iPhone 14, Action* Hands-on With The iPhone 14 Pro * Apple TV+ Takes a Swing at Live Sport* MLB won’t move Yankees’ Apple TV+ game over Aaron Judge home run chase - New York Post* Yankees floating Michael Kay in trade push for Apple’s historic Aaron Judge game - New York Post * NFL introduces the Apple Music Super Bowl Halftime Show - NFL* Rihanna to headline Super Bowl half-time show - BBC News* How Ted Lasso Changed The Game for Apple TV+* I Want My MCU TV* The Slice* Kelly Guimont on Twitter* Charlotte Henry on Twitter This is a public episode. Hands-on With The iPhone 14 Pro

Apple announced a range of devices at its ‘Far Out’ event on 7 September, most notably the iPhone 14 range. Nica Montford of the “SnobOS” podcast emptied her bank balance and got an iPhone 14 Pro, an Apple Watch Series 8 and some new AirPods Pro. She joins host Charlotte Henry to discuss just how good those new cameras are and how these new devices can help content creators of all kinds. Lights, iPhone 14, Action

Former Editor-in-Chief of The Mac Observer Bryan Chaffin joins host Charlotte Henry to discuss the iPhone 14 event. What does the latest batch of iPhones mean for media creation and consumption? In particular, they discuss how the constant improvements in smartphone cameras means they have almost entirely overtaken entry-level DSLRs. There was certainly a lot packed into Apple’s “Far Out” show. As is always the case at the company’s events at this time of year, the latest iPhone took centre stage. The most notable thing there was the introduction of the iPhone 14 Plus - it has all the same features as the standard iPhone along with a larger 6.7” display. The implications for media consumption are obvious. The increased screen size in the iPhone 14 Plus makes it a much more tempting device on which to read or watch content. The new Touch Controls on the AirPods Pro is a nice feature too.* The Power of Podcasts in 2022 - The Addition podcast with Dave Hamilton* Apple Event — September 7* Apple debuts iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max* Apple introduces iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus* Apple announces the next generation of AirPods Pro* Apple reveals Apple Watch Series 8 and the new Apple Watch SE* Introducing Apple Watch Ultra* https://geektells.com/* Bryan Chaffin on Twitter on Twitter* Charlotte Henry on Twitter This is a public episode. The Power of Podcasts in 2022

Podcast Movement is a major meeting point for people involved in podcasting, on both the creator and business sides. Dave Hamilton works across all aspects of podcasting and has been a regular attendee at the conference for many years. He speaks to host Charlotte Henry about what it was like to be back altogether at the most recent event and what Podcasting 2.0 is. They also discuss the growth potential of Google Podcasts, the success of Overcast and work out just how many years of YouTube are watched in a single day. Indeed, one of the key takeaways from Podcast Movement 2022 is how seriously the Google-owned video platform is starting to take podcasting. While much is changing in the world of podcasting, one thing is for certain - there is a lot to be excited about.* Podcast movement day one roundup* Mac Geek Gab* https://podcastindex.org/* “A Word With Tom Merrit” Podcast - Brian Ibbott* davehamilton.com* Dave Hamilton on Twitter* Charlotte Henry on TwitterThank you to Business Capital Providers for sponsoring the show. How Media Can Thrive in a Recession

Around the world, people are feeling the financial pinch, and things might be about to get tougher. While much of the discussion is rightly focused on the impact of a recession on personal and household finances, the media industry is also having to work out how to navigate these choppy waters. Again.Brian Morrisey of The Rebooting has seen many downturns and pivots during his journalism career. He joins host Charlotte Henry to help put in context what is going on now. They also look at how media businesses of all sizes can not just survive but thrive. In a difficult climate, there are opportunities to be creative, essential or both. That’s what creators and publishers need to focus on. Furthermore, the bundle is more likely to appeal to consumers once again as we all consider what services we really need and how much we are willing to pay for them.* The Rebooting* Brian Morrisey on Twitter* Charlotte Henry on TwitterThank you to Business Capital Providers for sponsoring the show. Axios Sells, Cookies to Crumble. Eventually.

Mark Stenberg, senior media reporter at AdWeek, joins host Charlotte Henry to discuss some breaking news - the sale of Axios for $525 million. Founded by some of those behind Politico, the rise of Axios is a modern media success story and, perhaps, a further endorsement of the newsletter-driven publication (woohoo!).Also in this episode, what does the delay to the end of third-party cookies mean for publishers? After yet another change to Google’s timetable, many have just decided to continue with their plans for a cookieless future, focussing on first-party data and technology builds. One such example, reported on by Mark, is Reach, the publisher behind the Mirror and local titles such as the Manchester Evening News. Facebook And News Breakup. Again.

Facebook is getting out of news. Again. And this time they are not just on a break. The relationship between Facebook and the news has always been a rather fraught one. In this episode of the podcast, long-time journalist, blogger, lecturer and consultant Adam Tinworth discusses with host Charlotte Henry how it took publishers a while to realise they were the junior partner and how they became too reliant on “the big blue site”. This is not the first time Facebook has stepped away from news - it has always been wary of the implications of being considered a publisher. (Although that didn’t stop many publications from pivoting to try and meet what they thought its algorithms wanted. ) However, given Mark Zuckerberg and his rebranded company Meta are now seemingly focused on Web3 and the metaverse, this breakup looks to be permanent.* Facebook’s long, slow breakup with journalism is underway - One Man And His Blog* Charlotte Henry on Twitter* Adam Tinworth on TwitterThank you to Business Capital Providers for sponsoring the show. A Technical Netflixcession

Netflix has lost subscribers for two quarters in a row. Its Q2 results revealed a loss of one million subscribers (it had expected to lose two million). This has clearly shaken the streaming giant and it is looking to make changes. These include the introduction of a cheaper ad-supported tier - something it has long rejected but is now expected to implement next year. There has been a backlash by some against the move. There is nothing wrong with adverts. Far from it. Indeed, along with wonderful paid subscribers, they make this podcast and newsletter possible. Both are greatly appreciated. However, even if it didn’t say so explicitly, Netflix always indicated to users that subscriptions meant you didn’t need to watch adverts and that this provided a better experience. As more services have entered the market, many at more competitive price points, the company has found its position under threat.Has Netflix, and streaming in general, finally hit its peak, or is this just a reasonable recalibration from a company that has led in its field for years? How Rolling Stone Came to The UK

Rolling Stone is one of the iconic media brands, covering the crossover of music, culture and politics in a unique way. Just over a year ago, it was announced that there was going to be a UK sister to the US-based publication. The small team behind it was, at the time of recording, preparing its sixth print edition, whilst also producing a regular stream of online stories. One of those in the team that launched the UK magazine is News Editor Nick Reilly. He joins host Charlotte Henry to discuss that launch, creating a UK voice for Rolling Stone, and collaborating with colleagues across the Atlantic. The details of how they decide what works for a UK audience whilst making sure to leverage the power that comes with the Rolling Stone brand are particularly interesting. The work done during Glastonbury, including interviews with artists performing at the festival, is a good example of this.* Rolling Stone UK* Nick Reilly on Twitter* Nick Reilly on Instagram* Charlotte Henry on TwitterThank you to Business Capital Providers for sponsoring the show. What’s Gone Wrong at Talk TV?

Talk TV is still there, with expensive sets and well-paid talent. The problem is, nobody is watching. Despite having the vast resources of News UK at its disposal, the channel has not been able to maintain an audience after a decent opening night. A mix of British viewing culture and some practical problems have left the station, at least on linear TV, in the doldrums. There was an awful lot to unpack from WWDC 2022. One thing missing was any reference to Apple TV+, the TV box and app, or tvOS. We did get some further insight into Apple’s interest in sport, though. (This episode was recorded just before Apple announced its decade-long MLS deal - thanks guys!)Hot off the plane from California, the Irish Independent’s Tech Editor Adrian Weckler explains what it was like to be back at Apple Park, the value of in-person events, his takeaways from the announcements, and why it looks like Craig Federighi is being groomed to be the next Apple CEO. Towards The Golden Age of Podcasting

The team behind the ‘Media Voices’ podcast came up with the idea of The Publisher Podcast Awards to celebrate excellence in the world of podcasting back in 2019. The first ceremony was held on 4th March 2020…Podcasts became a huge part of peoples’ lives during the pandemic and the awards continued (online) in order to celebrate the work publishers were doing. Happily, people could be together again this year and the awards offered a hybrid ceremony. Those recognised in 2022 included both some of the world’s biggest publishers and independent creators. Going through the shortlist is a great way to find the next podcast you need to download and become obsessed with (after The Addition podcast…of course!).Esther Kezia Thorpe of ‘Media Voices’ joined host Charlotte Henry to discuss the changes the podcasting industry has undergone in recent years, including its professionalisation, and why we still have not reached “the golden age of podcasting” yet. There remains plenty of new listeners to reach and, with publishers putting more and more resources into podcasts, there is a lot for both listeners and producers to look forward to.
