Wednesday, July 22nd, 2020, SAG-AFTRA members will be voting either "Yes" or "No" on the proposed 2020 TV/Theatrical Contract. While the SAG-AFTRA National Board has been pushing for a "Yes" vote from members, today's guests will discuss the ways in which they feel the union has failed to disclose the whole story and exactly what this contract will mean for performers in the entertainment industry moving forward. In our current COVID-19 world, the need for performers has only increased as people turn to film and television for relief during an ongoing global health pandemic. Today, I sit down with actors and longtime SAG-AFTRA members, David Jolliffe, Sean Astin, and Shaan Sharma as they discuss the intricacies of the contract and how it lead to the development of the "Get Out the No" campaign in an effort to educate voters about the various ways in which the contract will affect performers in terms of income and residual payments, health and pension considerations, on set safety provisions and much more. With so much still unknown as to when the film industry will reopen and resume work, today's conversation is an important one. It brings into question how we as actors can continue to make a living as performers from the early stages of our careers, to well into our older years. In today's episode we're chatting with Ben Barnes. Today's guest is a supreme example of the power of stillness. She radiates a quiet magnetism that draws her audiences into the inner life of the riveting and layered characters she portrays. Today we're sitting down with Oge Egbuonu. She's a director, writer, producer—a storyteller. A voice that's piercing the veil of what history has shown a Black woman's experience in America to be. Her directorial debut, (In)Visible Portraits, was just released on Juneteenth. It's a Think Piece, a self-described "love letter to Black women, and a re-education to everyone else." Oge shares how she found herself in the middle of creating this film, aware of its bigger purpose in being a vehicle for people to start questioning what they were taught to believe as true. Her journey to becoming a filmmaker is beautifully unconventional—from working in a hotel, to discovering a calling in teaching yoga, to accepting an unexpected job at Raindog Films where she helped bring to life Eye in the Skye (starring Helen Mirren and Alan Rickman) and the award-winning film Loving (starring Ruth Negga and Joel Edgerton). Each plot twist of her story shows a divine calling and a desire to be a vessel of service. Oge reminds us that we're in a collective space of reimagining what's possible, and that is the most powerful place we can be in right now. Today I sit down with television and film actress, Broadway star, and singer-songwriter, Jasmine Cephas Jones. Introduced into the world of entertainment by her father, actor Ron Cephas Jones, and her mother, jazz singer Kim Lesley, Jasmine went to school for the performing arts starting in middle school . She spent many years studying voice at LaGuardia High School in New York City as well as throughout her college years at Berklee College of Music. Today, Jasmine shares the feelings of vulnerability that came soon after where she felt something was missing and was unsure about exactly what kind of career she wanted to pursue. When she realized the missing link she had been searching for was acting, Jasmine immediately committed to studying the craft through experience with the LABrinth Theater Company and training in the Meisner teachings of the Neighborhood Playhouse for Theater. She shares her experiences with the peaks and valleys of the business, from being dropped by an agent, to landing the roles of Peggy Schuyler and Maria Reynolds in the Tony award winning Broadway hit musical, Hamilton. Even after conquering the world of Broadway, Jasmine ventured out to Los Angeles where she reveals she felt as if she was starting from scratch, grinding all over again to prove herself in the business of show business. While she admits to having moments of wanting to give up, Jasmine shares the mindsets she's carried with her over the years to help keep her moving through those moments of uncertainty. The belief she has in herself has earned her an extensive list of credits including roles on, HBO's "Girls" and "Mrs. Fletcher", as well as roles in films such as "Blindspotting", "The Photograph", "Monsters and Men" and can currently be seen on Quibi's newly released, "#FreeRayShawn". Today's guest has been around the arts her entire life. She is the acclaimed and generously creative British actor, writer, director and producer Rebecca Hall. Many of us first saw her in Christopher Nolan's The Prestige and soon after starring in Woody Allen's Vicky Cristina Barcelona. Rebecca witnessed early on what an artist's life could be. Actress, singer, songwriter and entrepreneur Caitlin Crosby knows a thing or two about inspiring others. She began writing songs with Kenny "Babyface" Edmonds in high school and subsequently signed to his label, Arista Records. Growing up in Hollywood and working in the entertainment industry inspired Caitlin to launch the campaign LoveYourFlawz to support those dealing with body image issues, with the release of debut album "Flawz" in 2009 through Blackledge/Atlantic Records. Merle was born in Okinawa, Japan to a mother of Korean and Japanese descent and an African-American father serving in the U.S Force. Growing up in Nebraska,but not into football, Merle didn't know where she fit. A friend encouraged Merle to choose drama as a study because she was told it was "easy". Little did Merle know that the drama department would be the community she had been longing for and that expression would give her the platform to explore social conditions and and the emotions that must be exposed to understand and accept each other. Merle graduated college and had a wild inclination that New York was where she needed to be to fulfill her purpose. With $107 in her pock, a packed Uhaul and an ailing kitten, she drove to New York and landed in the sea of many hopeful artist. Merle was still figuring out what was cool and learning everything on the fly. At the time a non-equity actor, she heard that everyone in town was going to audition for "Jesus Christ Superstar", so she decided to learn a song and stand in line at 4am to hopefully be given the opportunity to audition. At 1pm the casting director not only called her in to the room, but gave her the space and the light to shine. Even though most things came to Merle very easily, she was still doing what she considers "on the job" training and chasing after an idea or feeling of what it is to be an actress. After a job replaced her, a blessing in disguise, Merle accredits her acting coach Warner Loughlin for giving her the strength and confidence to approach every role with ease and unwavering sense of responsibility to the intention and message of the role. After working three jobs to support her theater career, Merle Dandridge landed herself in the company of Oprah and now holds the honor of portraying Grace on OWN's hit show, GREENLEAF. This woman's 25 year journey is nothing short of resilient, spiritual, and guided. Ashley Williams is an American film, television, theater actress, who most recently added the title of Producer to her long list of credits. She has had an expansive career with more than a dozen different television pilots and over 150 TV episodes under her belt. Tommy Dewey may seem casually cool and like he has it all figured out in this business, but it took "letting go" of perfection to land the jobs on CASUAL and THE MINDY PROJECT that made him feel like he could truly relax and embrace a fully realized character. A collegiate track runner at Princeton University, Tommy had big plans for Wall Street signing up for the LSAT twice. On hiatus from a stress fracture, Tommy accepted a challenge to audition for the two coveted spots in Princeton's improv troupe. No acting experience, but a innate sense of comedic timing and his sports driven ambitious nature landed him one of the two coveted roles out of 100 actors. Tommy not only secured the spot in the group, he eventually was the troupe's director and writer. Law School was still waiting for Tommy, but Tommy challenged himself with a summer intensive at RODA and now attributes his success to his fall back plan being writing. Yes, this guy can write! Tommy took a year off of acting to create and run the writer's room for his own show "Sons of Tucson."
