51. Dreams: Tap into the Power
In today’s episode of Tend Her Wild, hosts Betsy and Kate discuss the topic of dreams and their significance. Betsy has a talent of helping us uncover the deeper meaning of our dreams and does some dream analysis in this episode after she and Kate illuminate the nature and significance of dreaming. Carl Jung calls dreams “The most important and most obvious results of unconscious psychic processes ”. Essentially our subconscious mind is a huge part of us, how we see the world, and how we make decisions. The challenge is that we can’t just tap into it any time we want because it is unconscious! However, the more we understand it, the more we understand ourselves. Dreams are a direct link to your unconscious mind so it behooves us to pay attention to them! They cover different aspects of dreams, including: -Ways to connect to the unconscious mind through meditation, daydreaming, and free association -The meaning behind our dreams -How to remember your dreams -The different types of dreams and what they mean -What lucid dreaming is and how to access it The hosts emphasize the two important topics that there are no “bad” dreams and everything in a dream is a reflection of oneself. 43. Monica Basile: Wintering as a Practice
We are excited to have one of our dear friends and a wise human, Monica Basile, with us to talk about the important topic of wintering as we go into these colder months. Monica is a professional midwife, a Reiki master and teacher, a licensed massage therapist and a visual artist. She has more than 25 years experience as a healer, midwife, educator and she’s passionate about helping people experience beauty, enchantment, connection to the Earth and inner peace through honoring the seasonal and cyclical transformations of nature. “Wintering is an intentional relationship with the invitation of the Earth at this time of the year. The earth gives us an opportunity in winter to hibernate, to go a little bit inward and to reflect. The Earth tells us we need time to take a pause and go dormant for a little while so that we can produce again.” -Monica This is what we cover today about how to embrace the season of winter: •Why tuning into liminal spaces and transitional times can help attune us to reality and give us the opportunity to change our perspectives. •Monica’s story of her (and other’s) struggles and challenges with the winter season and ways to “winter” as a healing practice. •Working with candlelight and Earthlight (fire, candles, natural light) as a practice. •Finding aliveness in winter through awareness of nature by spending time outside. •Writing letters, sending cards, as a way of reaching out to other people that is more quiet, it’s more reflective and invites this very special moment of quiet connection. 42. Midlife Awakening: Rise From the Ashes
“Midlife is when the universe places her hands upon you shoulders, pulls you close, and whispers in your ear: I’m not screwing around. All of this pretending you’re performing, these coping mechanisms that you’ve developed to protect yourself from feeling inadequate and getting hurt has to go. Your armor is preventing you from growing into your gifts. I understand that you needed these protections when you were small. I understand that you believed your armor could help you secure all of the things you needed to feel worthy and lovable, but you’re still searching and you’re more lost than ever. Time is growing short. There are unexplored adventures ahead of you. You can’t live the rest of your life worried about what other people think. You were born worthy of love and belonging. Courage and daring are coursing through your veins. You were made to live and love with your whole heart. It’s time to show up and be seen.” -Brene Brown Today’s episode is all about the midlife crisis or what we like to call the midlife awakening. In this episode we discuss: •How the mid-life awakening can be a long process, a period of time that can last from 10 to 12 years. •That universally everyone goes through this, and how it is an opportunity to let go of old stories, soften the ego, and let go of personas that have defined us up until this point in time. •The freedom and authenticity that midlife can bring on the other side of the awakening. •Kate and Betsy’s personal experiences in their own mid-life awakenings and how they are navigating the process. •The acceptance that our choices at midlife do become more limited. This is a time of discernment vs trying everything like we might have done earlier in life. “Life really does begin at 40, up until then you’re just doing research.” -Carl Jung Books referenced in today’s episode: Hidden Blessings: Midlife Crisis as a Spiritual Awakening by Jett Psaris The Top Five Regrets of the Dying by Bronnie Ware Source

40. Anger: Channel the Fire
“There is an aspect that women need to master if you’re going to be a wild woman and that is dealing with what can only be called women’s rage. The release of that rage is required. Once women remember the origins of their rage they feel they may never stop grinding their teeth. Ironically, we also feel very anxious to disperse our rage for it feels distressing and anxious. We wish to hurry up and do away with it. But, repressing it will not work.” —Clarissa Pinkola Estes in Women Who Run with the Wolves In this episode we explore: -How anger is often considered a “bad” emotion, but that it is truly useful information and can offer us energy to sort through the complexities of life -How perfectionism and the need to be nice can repress anger early in life -How Kate found anger and rage as young women in spaces (law, politics, human rights) where appropriate anger could be acknowledged and accepted -How Betsy, whose training was to be good, nice and likable, held anger back until later in life -How women often repress anger, which then can manifest in the body as depression, heart problems, digestive issues -Heathy ways to express anger and how to figure out what message anger is trying to give us A Finnish study that mapped emotions onto where they are felt in the body. https://www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pnas.1321664111 Would you like to get away and explore how to RE-WILD in your own life? 38. Our Ten Year Old Selves
Today Kate and Betsy dive into a topic that they ask almost every single one of the TEND HER WILD guests, which are about those first ten years of life. Kate and Betsy ask themselves what they wish they could have been told or would have known at ten years of age, how we begin to conform to a patriarchal system and how to find harmony between the masculine and feminine. The episode explores: -Kate and Betsy’s messages to their ten year old selves -The point when we split from the feminine to be accepted, to do well, be successful -Why we cut ourselves off from intuition -The concept of “The Father’s Daughter” -Betsy and Kate’s brief experiences of working for their fathers as young women Our ultimate message to our ten year old selves, to our sisters and daughters? Be you. You are enough. Stay with the feminine. There is more to life than grades, than perfectionism and achievement, that part of life is also being present, being creative, trusting in the beauty and flow of life. Stay open and curious. 37. Can We Trust Other Women and Their Bodily Autonomy?
“The wild woman thunders after injustice and she is utterly essential to women’s mental and social health”. -Clarissa Pinkola Estes, Women Who Run WIth The Wolves Today we dive into a topic that rose to the surface this past June, the day that Roe V Wade was overturned by the Supreme Court. We try to create space to discuss this polarizing topic and share our initial feelings of shock that led to today’s podcast. As we talk about this challenging issue we discuss: •Kate’s perspective as a lawyer fighting injustice. •Betsy’s perspective as a psychologist who has a drive to stand up for women’s mental and social health. •That this is the first time in this history of our county that a right has has ever been taken away by the Supreme Court. •As women’s rights and power expand is this part of a backlash against women’s empowerment? •Women’s mental health trends during the pandemic and the shift of millions of American women away from the workplace. •Living in a time when our mothers have more rights than our daughters. As we close the episode we ponder the questions: •Do we as women trust each other? •Can we trust that our sister can listen to her own body, her own emotion, her own intuition about whether a pregnancy is right for her? •Can we trust each other as women to make our own choices? Books: Women Who Run With The Wolves -Clarissa Pinkola Estes Quote: “It’s hard to stomach that as women our bodies are in the hands of legislators who believe that your personhood and autonomy are conditional. Who believe that if you are impregnated by another person under any circumstance you have a legal and moral duty to undergo pregnancy, delivery, and in all likelihood two decades or more of caregiving no matter the permanent, potentially devastating consequences for your body, your heart, your mind, yourfamily, your ability to put food on the table, your plans, your aspirations, your life.” -Jia Tolentino in The New Yorker Resource: Sister Song Source

32. Perfectionism: A Cultural Phenomenon
In today’s episode we discuss Perfectionism, something that continues to reappear in life for many of us. At some point in our lives perfectionism served us, maybe we enjoyed the early accolades of the good girl as in Betsy’s case or reaping the rewards of meeting other’s standards as in Kate’s. This often leads to meeting everyone else’s needs but our own. Today we cover: * The differences between high achievement and perfectionism * Our personal journeys of perfectionism and the rewards and challenges that perfectionism can create in our lives * Finding authentic success through high achievement * Perfectionism as an addictive trait * How living in the moment, letting go of comparison and returning to ourselves can free us from addictive perfectionism * The inner work of healing to stop the generational learning of perfectionism Ultimately we discuss the importance of letting go of perfectionism, comparison to others and embracing our authentic selves to create ripples of authenticity in supported relationships. Our inner work is to clear out, to heal ourselves so we don’t pass perfectionism on. “What is really amazing and really hard is giving up on being perfect and beginning the work of becoming yourself” -Anna Quindlen For information on Betsy’s course RECLAIM: THE HEROINE’S JOURNEY: https://dryogamomma.com/reclaim-heroines-journey-of-transformation/ Books in today’s episode: Present Over Perfect -Shauna Niequist The Gifts of Imperfection -Brene Brown Being Perfect -Anna Quindlen Quotes: “Where perfectionism exists, shame is always lurking” -Brene Brown “If you’re really spiritual (enlightened), then you should be totally independent of the good and bad opinions of the world” -Deepak Chopra “What is really amazing and really hard is giving up on being perfect and beginning the work of becoming yourself” -Anna Quindlen Source

28. Freedom in Truth with Kate and Betsy
This week Kate and Betsy discuss the importance of finding, knowing and trusting our truth. They talk about why we disconnect form our truth, what gets in the way of us finding our truth and the power of reclaiming our truth in the face of fear by following our own path regardless of what we’ve been conditioned to believe. Some truths about truth that are discussed: -Facing difficult truths and potential consequences of not listening to those truths. -Deconstructing untruths by listening to our bodies, listening to our intuition and facing old patterns to reveal our truth. -Self trust and the belief in taking the next right step. The small steps move you toward the big things. -Making change at the individual level and doing our own individual work to co-exist in a different way. Lastly they discuss our commitment to living our truth through quiet time, reflection, writing, meditation, listening to our inner voice, and listening to the body. No-one else lives in your body or soul, no-one else knows what you need. Be with yourself, trust your inner voice,…the less noise, the clearer your decision will be. 22. How to Connect to Self with Salisha Aya
In today’s episode we have our first return guest, Salisha Aya! The first time we interviewed her, she created a deep impact with her story of childhood abuse transformed into deep healing and service. Salisha wowed us again in this episode with her depth of sharing, the wisdom that flows through her, and advice to women on how to come home to self. Next week Kate and Betsy begin teaching TEND HER 2.0 – a 4 week online program for women teaching how to come home to our self, our heart, our body, our intuition, and then how to connect from this deeper place to others. For more info about joining, visit www.dryogamomma.com/tend-her-2 So we interviewed Salisha about what her reclamation of self has looked like. In this episode, Salisha talks about: How distanced she was from her body, and how yoga was her first pathway in to more presence. She also discusses alcoholism and how this was a deep disconnect from her body. The importance of listening to the heart, and how she believes vulnerability is the way her heart begin to melt the walls she had built up around it. She speaks to the power of women in group in vulnerability and how we all have essentially the same stories, fears, shames, and challenges. How she was always intuitive, but that her intuitive instincts would often get confused with her history of trauma, so she could never be sure if her intuition was right or not. She shares the formula of how she works with intuition now: get the intuitive hit, ACT ON IT, and see if you are right. The power of connection and how we can begin to deduce whether our connections with others are life giving or toxic. 21. Living In the Threshold
Today’s episode all about dualities. We discuss a recent poem by Cleo Wade that illustrates this idea so beautifully. “Here’s the thing – you are allowed to be a ball of contradictions. Everything you are and everything you like does not have to make sense in relation to each other. Life is less about being right, correct, and validated and more about being free, joyful, and curious in a world that asks you to see it in black and white – Do yourself the divine favor of experiencing it in color. “ – Cleo Wade We discuss the fear of holding all of it and the tension of opposites. When we are able to live in the threshold we have a fuller life. As mothers we talk about instilling in our children there is no bad emotion or experience. It is all part of life and gives us the opportunity to grow and expand. We share stories of Kate’s grandmother Bernie and our friend Monica who embody this idea live in this space. Being with people who are unafraid of themselves is a beautiful experience. Resources: Join us on July 11th for TendHER 2: https://dryogamomma.com/tend-her-2/ Source
20. Balancing Our Personal Masculine & Feminine Energies
In today’s episode, we talk about the divine feminine and masculine energies and finding a balance between them. Several themes emerged from this discussion: The difficulty in calling these energies masculine and feminine, as it automatically attaches them to gender which is not actually the case. Other ways to describe these energies include light/dark, night/day, sun/moon, receptive/active, yin/yang. In the end, we continue to use the descriptors masculine and feminine as this is how they are often described, even though we acknowledge the limitations of this. The feminine energy is being receptive, nurturing, gentle, intuitive, wild and natural. The masculine is about being focused, goal oriented, disciplined, productive and active. It is critical that we find a balance between these energies if we want to experience a greater sense of harmony and fulfillment. We talk about our individual healing experiences in the past few months. For Kate, she has been healing her inner feminine, and for Betsy her work has been healing her inner masculine. We discuss feminine leadership and how the patriarchy negatively impacts everyone, including men, and how important it is to hold space for men to be vulnerable and tap into their feminine energy. 19. From Iowa to Mt Everest: A Conversation with Jen Loeb
We talk with Jen Loeb, the only female Iowan who has climbed the 7 summits, including Mt. Everest. In this conversation we talk about: How growing up in Jessup, Iowa, as a “feral child” spending countless hours outdoors likely were foreshadowing of what adventures would come. How unlikely it was for an Iowa girl to find the sport of climbing and how her first experience on Mt. Whitney during a volunteer experience started her down this path. The importance of finding a Mountain Climbing Skill School which led to climb after climb, each getting progressively higher and more technical. The life changing (and at the time shocking) comment a guide mentioned to her after climbing Mt Kilimanjaro that planted the seed that she was ready to climb Everest. Her 3 year journey to Everest, including lots of self doubt, hearing from countless people that she was crazy, her training schedule, the financial commitment, and what it felt like to reach the Summit. About Jen: Jen Loeb was born and raised in Iowa where she still resides today. She attended Wartburg College and earned a degree in biology, and then started focusing on volunteer work in 2006 with a trip to Ghana. Over the years Jen has made it a point to volunteer locally, nationally, and internationally. She has been involved in all different kinds of projects from building schools, houses, and hiking trails to cleaning up rivers, removing invasive plants, and even collecting data on endangered species. In 2010, Jen started mountain climbing. Since that time, she’s climbed peaks all over the world including Mt. Everest in 2016. In 2021 Jen completed her dream of climbing the “7 Summits” becoming the first and only woman from Iowa to climb the highest peak on every continent. 18. Radical Alliance with Raye Zaragoza
In this episode we have a deep and inspiring conversation with Raye Zaragoza, a 29 year old singer/songwriter who has always had the courage to forge her own path. As a Japanese-American, Mexican, Indigenous woman, issues of belonging, skin color, and feeling as if she was on the outside flow through her music. She explains that trusting in herself and the universe has brought her great success and allowed her to follow her passion. In our conversation we cover: How Raye took an alternative route of not attending college despite straight A’s because she knew it wasn’t the right path for her, but that this challenged other people’s sense of reality and made them uncomfortable. How Raye was able to bust through many culturally conditioned stories at such a young age, and actually find herself in her 20s versus having to wait until she was much older. This young woman is a wise soul! The importance of leaving behind politeness in order to get to a place of empowerment. We play a clip of Raye’s song “Run with the Wolves” based on our favorite book “Women who Run with the Wolves” by Dr. Clarissa Pinkola Estes. (We love that Raye has read this book already and even ripped off the front cover of her copy and has it framed!) Raye talks about the importance of “radical alliance” – this term feels so timely and powerful. We discuss how women can support one another in a pack, and how women can be good sisters in radical alliance. About Raye: Raye Zaragoza is a galvanizing presence, a self-assured artist making music to fight for, represent, and celebrate those left too long outside the spotlight. Known for tenacious feminist anthems and fearless protest folk, her stage presence teems with determined morale. As a Japanese-American, Mexican, Indigenous woman, Zaragoza spent much of her early life trying to assimilate with the world around her, to meet punishing standards of beauty synonymous with just one color of skin—and not her own. She has come a long way from that youthful pain, proclaiming “I am proud to be a multicultural brown woman with insecurities and a vibrant intersectional identity that I continue to grapple with. I hope young girls of today will know that the It Girl is whatever the hell they want to be.” In the aftermath of her breakthrough single, “In The River,” Zaragoza released Fight For You, the protest-driven debut she says had her “finding my voice as a woman of color.” Upon releasing her first full-length, she discovered the beauty, significance, and necessity of her natural identity in a broader conversation; she was ready to celebrate what made her “different” and invigorate those of similar struggles to do the same. This rightful confidence radiates across Woman In Color, Zaragoza’s sophomore album out now on Rebel River Records, her own independent label. The album delivers powerful missives about embracing one’s own identity and discovering the power behind it, all across brisk, emotive, compelling folk melodies. Once deemed “one of the most politically relevant artists in her genre” by Paste Magazine, Raye Zaragoza now offers an intimate exploration of coming into her own, in a country where for many, simply existing is political. Through this album, Raye has written a collection of spirited canticles for herself, for womanhood, and for all the people who had to come together in such an event of divine coincidence that led to her existence. 17. Perspectives on Pain and Healing
In this week’s episode we talk honestly about the pain we all seem to be experiencing in some way. Pain exists for both the individual and the collective after this difficult period in our history. We share our thoughts on healing our nervous systems, and the weight of current issues like school shootings that have certainly added to that heaviness. We talk about all the numbing activities and how we are so damn afraid to feel. Our world and our country are breaking open and there seems to be a collective rising. More and more people are on the path of awakening. When one of us heals we actually heal the whole. How do we do heal? You don’t need to know where to start, you just need to make the internal commitment to yourself that you are ready to heal your pain. The universe will show you the path you need and all the wisdom we need is inside of us. Advocacy for Gun Safety https://momsdemandaction.org Broken Open by Elizabeth Lesser Source
16. Wisdom from Marianne
We had the honor to do a live podcast event with Marianne Williamson at the James theatre with around 100 women in attendance. Marianne came on with a bang and gave us all so much to digest and reflect upon. We were so grateful for this opportunity to be in the midst of one of the great thought leaders of our time. Here are some of the highlights: -The point of wildness is to bring the divine feminine into the world for transformational purposes. -Everyone’s life has a highly individualized curriculum. -If you see a sister in deep effort to share her wildness and her divinity – the best she is with the world, help her. -To be a real leader is to get into the system and disrupt it. And one of our favorites……. Pray in the morning, kick ass in the afternoon. Marianne is the author of 13 books including 4 New York Times best sellers. 15. Rebecca Ryan: Bring It On
As a futurist and Wild Woman, Rebecca Ryan helps people and communities connect to something bigger. She shares her upbringing and the narrow box she grew up in as an adopted child. She explains how she stepped out of the box by starting her own company 25 years ago. Rebecca talks about her fascination with generational change and the desire to understand trends. As a zen master, Rebecca sees the power and synergy of being in the present as you plan for a better future. We discuss the feminine rising, and the need for more female leadership. She shares her story of seeing Madeleine Albright as a mother figure and hearing Albright say “There is a special place in hell for women who do not support other women”. Rebecca applied to the CIA, played professional basketball in Europe, and studied in Budapest and Germany. We discuss the three big disruptions that need to be healed: Disconnection from self, disconnection from others and the connection to the natural world. Rebecca wakes up every day hell-bent on making the world better for future generations. She is a top 50 futurist, economist, best-selling author and keynote speaker. Rebecca empowers bold and ambitious futures for her clients as she walks them through foresight experiences that produce future-ready participants with a future-focused plan. 14. Rewilding and Motherhood
Today’s episode, in honor of Mother’s Day, we explore the topic of raising the next generation of wild women. How do we embrace these young wild wolf pups to preserve their inherently wild nature? We discuss three authors who write about parenting: Carl Jung, William Martin, and Dr. Shefali in “The Awakened Parent”. In this episode we discuss three themes: Your children are not your own. They just came through you and they are on their own path. They have the right to express their own spirt. Can you love without control? Live you own life. “The greatest burden a child must bear is the unlived life of its parents.” When you do not live your life through your children, then they are free to find their own fulfillment. Do your own work and develop your own awareness. Instead of fixing or controlling your children – work on yourself and get as clear as possible so you aren’t projecting your stuff onto them. We talk about having brave and honest conversations with our daughters and helping them to live in the present moment. 13. You have Permission to Shine Your Light!
Today’s episode is based on Marianne Williamson’s beloved quote: “Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate, our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small doesn’t serve the world.” If we speak up and tell our truth, we all fear we may lose love. Marianne has also written, “Women are still emotional bondage as long as we have to make a choice between being heard and being loved”. As women we must empower each other to speak up, overcome our imposter syndrome, and high five each other for our successes rather than shy away in jealousy or worst of all, say nothing at all. Why we hang back and play small as women and how it is our light and our potential that scares us the most. You are not too loud, too big or too opinionated! There is enough space for all of us. As we let our light shine, we send out reverberations and ripples that give other people the chance to do the same. Meet Salisha Aya, a sacred leader who empowers women in wellness retreats, women’s circles, and conscious ritual. Today’s inspiring conversation is a journey with Salisha from her early years in an abusive, alcoholic household to finding worldly success until one day in her 30’s when she literally hit the brakes on her sports car and asked the big question, “Is this all there is?” That question opened up a world of seeking and transformation as Salisha sought to figure out who she was and what she really wanted out of life (which wasn’t what she had been told by society/culture). A journey to India, a divorce, and finding herself in the jungle of South America on a plant medicine journey all led her to deep healing and a deep reverence for herself and the power of what she calls the “divine sacred feminine”. Salisha admits that she is wildly, blissfully happy despite all that she has endured in her life, a testament to the work she has done on herself and the work she so expertly guides other women toward in the retreats and trainings she leads.
