The Hawaii fires. On August 8, a series of deadly wildfires erupted on the Hawaiian island of Maui. The death toll has reached 114, with 850 people still missing and 85% of impacted areas in Maui searched.The historic town of Lahaina has been completely destroyed, though several other areas of the island were also impacted. The fires are now the deadliest natural disaster in state history and the deadliest wildfires in modern U.S. history, surpassing 2018's Camp Fire in Paradise, California, which killed 85 people. The Fulton County, Georgia, indictments. Last week, a grand jury in Fulton County, Georgia, indicted former President Donald Trump and 18 others over allegations of a sprawling conspiracy to overturn Joe Biden's election victory in Georgia.We were on vacation last week. The Grand Canyon monument. On Tuesday, President Joe Biden designated the fifth national monument of his presidency. The Baaj Nwaavjo I’tah Kukveni—Ancestral Footprints of the Grand Canyon National Monument will protect an area of roughly 917,000 acres outside the Grand Canyon from human activity, notably uranium mining. Legacy admissions. This week, the United States Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona suggested that the Supreme's Court's decision to strike down affirmative action could lead to axing legacy admissions, the practice of giving priority to the children of alumni.Separately, a civil rights group called Lawyers for Civil Rights is challenging legacy admissions at Harvard University, saying the practice discriminates against students of color by giving an unfair advantage to mostly white alumni. On Thursday, the Commerce Department reported that the U.S. economy grew by a 2.4% annualized rate in the second quarter, beating the 2% estimate by economists and showing the latest sign that a U.S. recession is unlikely. At the same time, the personal consumption expenditures price index increased just 2.6%, a sign that inflation is continuing to cool. Florida's African American studies curriculum. Last week, the Florida Board of Education approved a controversial new curriculum to teach African American history. The 216-page document is part of Florida Governor Ron DeSantis's Stop Wrongs to Our Kids and Employees Act (commonly called the Stop W.O.K.E. Act), which was passed in 2022 and regulates the way race and gender can be taught in the classroom. The IRS whistleblowers. On Wednesday, two whistleblowers from the Internal Revenue Service testified in front of Congress about the investigations into President Biden's son, Hunter. The whistleblowers, IRS special agent Joseph Ziegler and his supervisor Gary Shapley, alleged that the U.S. Attorney for Delaware David Weiss and other prosecutors slow-walked the case and showed preferential treatment for the president's son. Republicans’ NDAA bill. On Friday, House Republicans passed a sweeping defense bill called the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). NDAAs are annual bills whose primary function is to fund national defense programs, and they typically pass with bipartisan support. However, controversy over the bill increased after it was heavily amended by conservatives in the House to include a few hot-button social issues like abortion policy; health care for transgender soldiers; and diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) programs. Those amendments resulted in an unusual party-line vote, with the bill passing 219 to 210. Four Democrats voted with Republicans in favor, while four GOP members voted against. Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-AL). Heat records. For four straight days last week, Earth’s temperature tied or broke the record for hottest days since record keeping began in 1979. In a 6-3 decision on Tuesday, the Supreme Court rejected independent state legislature theory (ISL), the legal theory that embraces the idea that the Constitution gives state legislatures unfettered authority to regulate federal elections, with little to no interference from state courts. On June 15, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. appeared on Joe Rogan's podcast to describe his outlook on vaccine safety and promote his 2024 presidential campaign. The Supreme Court voting rights ruling. On Thursday, the Supreme Court ordered Alabama to create a second majority-black district, throwing out its gerrymandered congressional map and upholding Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act (VRA). The 5-4 ruling in Allen v. Milligan was a surprise to many court watchers who expected the court to rule in favor of the Republican mapmakers in the state. The Trump indictment. On Friday afternoon, former President Donald Trump's indictment was unsealed. The Department of Justice has charged Trump with 37 counts of seven different charges, including willfully retaining national defense information, withholding classified records, making false statements to investigators, and conspiracy to obstruct. Walt Nauta, a military veteran and aide to Trump who worked at Mar-a-Lago, was also charged on five counts and a separate false statements charge.You can read the indictment here. The Ukraine war. Yesterday, as Ukraine's counteroffensive appeared to be underway, news broke that a major dam and hydroelectric power plant in southern Ukraine were severely damaged. The attack on the dam caused flooding near the front lines, with communities downstream of the dam — many currently under Russian control — having to evacuate while Russia continued shelling the region overhead. Pride month. June in the United States is Pride Month, when members of the LGBTQ community celebrate lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer pride. California home insurers. Last week, State Farm said it would stop selling new insurance policies to homeowners in California as of May 27, citing "historic increases in construction costs outpacing inflation, rapidly growing catastrophe exposure, and a challenging reinsurance market." The decision leaves Californians without one of the largest insurers in the country and the leading provider of homeowners insurance in the state, worsening the problem for residents already struggling to keep up with costly home insurance. The debt ceiling deal. Days before a potential default, President Biden and House Speaker Kevin McCarthy announced an agreement to suspend the debt limit for two years. The Fiscal Responsibility Act will cut spending, speed up permitting for some energy projects, enact new work requirements for food stamps and TANF, recover $28 billion in unspent Covid money, and redirect roughly $20 billion of IRS funds to other agencies. While party leaders have agreed to the deal, it still faces an uncertain path in the House and Senate, where some opposition has popped up on both sides of the aisle. Twitter v. Taamneh and Gonzalez v. Google LLC. On Thursday, the Supreme Court ruled against the family of a 2017 ISIS attack victim who had sued Twitter, Facebook, and Google in an effort to hold them liable for allowing ISIS to use their platforms. The court ruled unanimously that the lawsuit could not move forward. Along with that ruling, the justices sent Gonzalez v. Google LLC, a similar case, back to the lower courts. That decision sidestepped any major changes to the scope of Section 230 of the 1996 Communications Decency Act, which shields tech companies from liability for content published by users. Scott, a 57-year-old who joined the Senate in 2013, was first sworn into Congress as a member of the House in 2011. Scott is one of the most prominent Republicans in the Senate, and quickly earned an endorsement from Sen. John Thune (R-SD), the No. 2 ranking Senate Republican.
