The Colorado river water fight.
In late January, the seven states that rely on the Colorado River for water failed to strike a water-sharing deal by the federally mandated deadline. Because the states were unable to come to an agreement, the Biden administration — led by the federal Bureau of Reclamation — may have to intervene and impose regional water cuts at a time when the states involved continue to battle droughts and historically low reservoirs. You can read today's podcast here, today’s “Under the Radar” story here and today’s “Have a nice day” story here. Republicans & Social Security.
During last week's State of the Union address, President Biden claimed that "some Republicans" want to sunset Social Security and Medicare, drawing boos and jeers from Republican members of Congress in attendance. In the week since, President Biden has escalated those attack lines, repeating the claims during public speeches in Florida. Gas stoves. Last week, Richard Trumka Jr., a commissioner on the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, said his agency was considering a ban on gas stoves amid rising concerns about harmful indoor air pollutants. “This is a hidden hazard,” Trumka Jr. told Bloomberg. The debt ceiling, explained.
The debt ceiling (or debt limit). During the recent debate over the next Speaker of the House, one of the key impending issues was the debt ceiling, or debt limit. Several conservative House members used the upcoming deadline to raise the debt limit to leverage a commitment from Kevin McCarthy to force spending cuts by Congress. Since being elected Speaker, McCarthy has confirmed that Republicans won't raise the debt limit without changes to federal spending, including programs like Social Security and Medicare. You can read today's podcast here, today’s “Under the Radar” story here, and today’s “Have a nice day” story here.Today’s clickables: Quick Hits (0:58), Today’s Story (2:54), Right’s Take (7:24), Left’s Take (12:33), Isaac’s Take (16:57), Your Questions Answered (20:05), Under the Radar (22:23), Numbers (23:08), Have A Nice Day (23:46).You can subscribe to Tangle by clicking here or drop something in our tip jar by clicking here. Our podcast is written by Isaac Saul and edited by Zosha Warpeha. Biden's new border plan.
President Biden has announced a tougher stance on immigration at the border, saying the U.S. would begin turning away Cubans, Haitians, and Nicaraguans who cross the border from Mexico illegally. Under the new rules, migrants who come to the U.S. without first asking for asylum in the countries they travel through will be denied asylum and deported, a nearly identical plan to one the administration has used to drastically reduce the number of Venezuelan migrants traveling to the U.S.You can read today's podcast here, today’s “Under the Radar” story here, and today’s “Have a nice day” story here. You can find our previous coverage of the border and immigration here. The $1.6 trillion omnibus bill.
Last month, Congress passed a $1.65 trillion government funding bill that provides record allocations for defense and sends more emergency aid to Ukraine. The bill passed by a 225-201 vote in the House, largely along party lines, after passing the Senate 68-29, with the support of 18 Senate Republicans, including minority leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY). The bill is a massive, 4,100-page piece of legislation that does not only pertain to funding, but also implements new laws. Republicans pick Kevin McCarthy for Speaker.
McCarthy is finally in. On Saturday, the 57-year-old Republican representative Kevin McCarthy from California was elected Speaker of the House after a historic 15 votes on the House floor over the span of five days. The process required more ballots than the House has needed to pick a Speaker since 1859, illustrating deep divisions in the Republican caucus. You can read today's podcast here, today’s “Under the Radar” story here, and today’s “Have a nice day” story here.Today’s clickables: Quick Hits (4:20), Today’s Story (6:01), Right’s Take (9:44), Left’s Take (14:33), Isaac’s Take (18:49), Your Questions Answered (23:13), Under the Radar (24:17), Numbers (24:57), Have A Nice Day (25:36)You can subscribe to Tangle by clicking here or drop something in our tip jar by clicking here. Our podcast is written by Isaac Saul and edited by Zosha Warpeha. INTERVIEW: Simon Rosenberg, the man who got 2022 right.
In our last preview of the 2022 election, I cited Democratic strategist Simon Rosenberg as a "unique voice" in a sea of forecasters and pundits who said Democrats were going to get wiped out in the midterms. I also said that if he was right, I'd reach out to him for an interview and figure out why he got it right when everyone else got it wrong. Well, he was right. And I did reach out. And today, you'll hear our conversation about 2022, the people who got it wrong, what he saw that everyone else didn't, and what he expects in 2024.You can read today's podcast here. The Republican fight for Speaker of the House.
In the 2022 midterms, Republicans won the House of Representatives 222-213, grabbing the same number of seats Democrats currently hold in Congress. November's inflation numbers.
Last month, consumer prices rose 7.1% from a year ago, down from 7.7% in October and the peak of 9.1% in June. On a month-to-month basis, inflation rose just 0.1%. Core CPI, which excludes more volatile food and energy costs, was up 0.2% from October to November, the lowest month- to- month increase since August of 2021. All of these numbers came in lower than economists expected, which spurred a momentary stock market rally.
