INTERVIEW: Bill O'Reilly
Before Tucker Carlson, the most consequential news anchor in America was Bill O'Reilly. Under his leadership, Fox News became the most popular television station in America. In 2009, The O'Reilly Factor was the number one cable news show in America for 106 consecutive weeks, sometimes drawing more than three million viewers a night. His views on national politics regularly dominated the front pages, and his style was fought and often mocked by the left, but rarely ignored.Yet O'Reilly was also fundamentally different than what Tucker Carlson became. He did not and does not consider himself a conservative or even an ideologue. He's maintained friendly relationships with liberal contemporaries like Jon Stewart. In 2020, after Donald Trump's election was lost, he was one of the few news anchors regularly watched by Trump supporters who was telling them that the election was not stolen.Today, O'Reilly runs an independent nightly broadcast, much like the one he ran on Fox News, called No Spin News. He was ousted from Fox News in 2017 after a New York Times article revealed that he and the network had settled multiple sexual harassment allegations in court, costing millions of dollars. Advertisers fled when the story broke and Fox News eventually let O 'Reilly go.In previous interviews, he said that he regrets not fighting the accusations. While his ouster from Fox News may have taken him out of the limelight for many liberals and progressives in America, he's still a force in the more conservative minded media ecosystem. No Spin News is still widely watched and even appears on some cable news channels. After O'Reilly interviewed me on his show a couple months ago, hundreds of his viewers signed up for Tangle. In September, when Tucker Carlson interviewed O'Reilly on X, their conversation drew over 22 million views. After appearing on O'Reilly's show a few times in his repeated references to being a Tangle reader, we decided to turn the tables. I reached out to his team to have him come on the Tangle podcast. I had a lot of questions for him. I wanted to ask about the 2024 race, the state of the media, his relationship with Donald Trump and Tucker Carlson and Jon Stewart, his ouster from Fox News, and I tried to get him to say something nice about President Biden. It took some arm twisting, but he eventually did. He has deemed President Biden the second worst president in US history, and we talked about that too. Shortly before the interview, O'Reilly's people emailed us and said he could only do 20 minutes instead of our scheduled 45 minute interview. So we didn't get to some of the things I wanted to get to, but once the conversation started, he actually did hang around for over 30 minutes, close to 40.So today we're going to bring you that conversation exclusively right here on the Tangle YouTube channel. Hope you guys enjoy it. And don't forget, let me know what you think. You can reach me at [email protected].* FACT CHECK: There were some moments in the interview we felt needed to be clarified. One editor's note was included in this podcast, but there were a few others. You can check out the full transcript of the interview with notes here. You can also check out our latest YouTube video where we tried to build the most electable president ever here.Today's Clickables:Introduction and the 2024 election: 00:00The Legal Troubles of Donald Trump: 06:29Accountability for Presidents: 11:25Fox News Coverage: 14:40Influence of Network News Stations: 19:19Thoughts on Tucker interviewing Putin: 22:52Jon Stewart's Return: 25:26Trump and Biden's Strengths and Weaknesses: 29:45Our podcast is written by Isaac Saul and edited and engineered by Jon Lall. Michigan mom convicted in mass shooting case.
Jennifer Crumbley. On Tuesday, a Michigan jury convicted Crumbley, a school shooter's mother, on four counts of involuntary manslaughter for her son’s killing of four high-school students in 2021. Crumbley is the first parent in the U.S. to ever be found criminally responsible for their child carrying out a mass killing. Her husband, James Crumbley, is scheduled to stand trial next month.Editor's note: Tangle does not name mass shooters because of the well documented contagion effect. Appeals court says Trump is not immune.
Trump's immunity. On Tuesday, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit unanimously rejected former President Donald Trump's claim that he is immune to criminal charges of trying to undermine the 2020 election. The panel, composed of two Democratic appointees and one Republican appointee, said that presidential privileges don’t shield Trump from prosecution for federal crimes that apply to every American citizen. You can read today's podcast here, our “Under the Radar” story here and today’s “Have a nice day” story here. You can also check out our latest YouTube video where we tried to build the most electable president ever here.Today’s clickables: Two important notes (0:43), Quick hits (2:17), Today’s story (4:32), Right’s take (6:50), Left’s take (10:32), Isaac’s take (14:24), Listener question (19:10), Under the Radar (21:36), Numbers (22:36), Have a nice day (23:41)You can subscribe to Tangle by clicking here or drop something in our tip jar by clicking here. The border standoff in Texas.
The Texas border standoff. On Friday, the Supreme Court ruled that the federal government has the authority to access a park abutting the Rio Grande and remove razor wire installed by the state of Texas. The Department of Homeland Security told Texas to give it access to the fencing, which is in Eagle Pass, by Friday, but Texas has refused. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton demanded proof that the federal government has authority over the border, while Gov. Greg Abbott (R) doubled down, saying he'll increase state border patrol and add more barriers and razor wire. You can read today's podcast here, our “Under the Radar” story here, and today’s “Have a nice day” story here. You can also check out our latest YouTube video about misinformation and fake news that has spread like wildfire in the three months since Hamas’s attack on Israel and the subsequent fighting in Gaza here.Today’s clickables: A quick note (0:53), Quick hits (1:48), Today’s story (4:27), Left’s take (8:42), Right’s take (12:21), Isaac’s take (26:45), Under the Radar (32:32), Numbers (33:26), Have a nice day (34:49)You can subscribe to Tangle by clicking here or drop something in our tip jar by clicking here. SCOTUS hears Chevron doctrine argument.
The Chevron doctrine. On Wednesday, the Supreme Court heard arguments in Loper Bright Enterprises v. Raimondo and Relentless, Inc. v. Department of Commerce, two challenges to the so-called Chevron doctrine (or Chevron deference). The conservative-leaning court seems poised to limit or strike Chevron deference down, reversing 40 years of judicial precedent that was once championed by conservative icon and former Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia. You can read today's podcast here, our “Under the Radar” story here, and today’s “Have a nice day” story here. You can also check out our latest YouTube video about misinformation and fake news that has spread like wildfire in the three months since Hamas’s attack on Israel and the subsequent fighting in Gaza here.Today’s clickables: A few notes (0:44), Quick hits (2:58), Today’s story (5:34), Right’s take (10:05), Interview with Jacob Sullum (13:09), Left’s take (26:50), Interview with Thomas Wolf (30:01), Isaac’s take (40:09), Listener question (44:48), Under the Radar (48:05), Numbers (49:01), Have a nice day (50:03)You can subscribe to Tangle by clicking here or drop something in our tip jar by clicking here. Trump wins Iowa caucuses.
The Iowa caucuses. On Monday, Donald Trump scored a landslide victory in the Iowa caucuses, kicking off the 2024 Republican presidential primary with a big win. Polls closed in Iowa at 7:00 pm CT/8:00 pm ET, and by 8:32 pm ET The New York Times, 538 and ABC News, and Fox News Decision Desk had all declared Donald Trump the winner. The former president began his third presidential campaign by winning 98 of Iowa’s 99 counties and capturing 51% of the vote, a record for margin of victory in the Iowa caucuses. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis finished second with 21% of the vote, former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley finished third with 19%, and Vivek Ramaswamy finished fourth with 8%. Just over 108,000 voters, or 14.4% of the state’s Republicans, turned out to vote. It was the lowest turnout in the Iowa caucuses since 2008. After the race was called, Ramaswamy officially dropped out and endorsed Donald Trump. You can read today's podcast here, our “Under the Radar” story here, and today’s “Have a nice day” story here. You can also check out our latest YouTube video about misinformation and fake news that has spread like wildfire in the three months since Hamas’s attack on Israel and the subsequent fighting in Gaza here.Today’s clickables: A few notes (0:43), Quick hits (1:51), Today’s story (4:33), Right’s take (7:25), Left’s take (11:17), Tangle’s take (15:10), Listener question (19:38), Under the Radar (22:28), Numbers (23:39), Have a nice day (24:54)You can subscribe to Tangle by clicking here or drop something in our tip jar by clicking here. Houthi attacks in the Red Sea, and the U.S. response
The Houthi attacks. On Thursday, the United States and Britain — with support from Canada, the Netherlands, and Bahrain — bombed more than a dozen Houthi rebel sites across Yemen in retaliation for a series of attacks on commercial ships crossing the Red Sea. On Saturday morning, the U.S. hit an additional site in Yemen it said was putting ships at risk. The Iran-backed Houthis had disregarded weeks of warnings and continued to attack merchant ships passing through the Red Sea, leading to the strikes. You can read today's podcast here, our “Under the Radar” story here, and today’s “Have a nice day” story here (NPR) and here (CNN). Everything we got wrong (and right) in 2023
Welcome to a new era in Tangle! Today will be the first episode with my Friday co-host, our Managing Editor, Ari Weitzman. We are working towards releasing Friday subscriber only content in the near future and this will be one of our new offerings. We'll be presenting the a few episodes for free. In an attempt at the virtue of accountability, I like to dedicate the first Friday edition of every new year to grading some of my previous writing. The way this process works is simple: About two months ago, I told my team to start looking through our archives with a retrospective lens, reading the things we published, and flagging instances where we made authoritative comments or outright predictions. I also sorted through reader criticisms and feedback, and suggestions about articles to revisit. Then, our team went back as a group to evaluate that writing, and settled on a grade for how we did.Of course, we published over 200 newsletters last year, so we can't grade every single one. Instead, we tried to focus on newsletters tied to the biggest stories of 2023 — the stories that garnered the most public attention and reader feedback. I'm going to share with you key excerpts from my writing and my overarching take, and then a brief "reflection" section along with a grade on the A-to-F scale. At the end, I'll do some rapid-fire grading and also revisit the 19 predictions we published in 2021.You can find our 2022 review here and our 2021 review here. You can also check out our latest YouTube video about misinformation and fake news that has spread like wildfire in the three months since Hamas’s attack on Israel and the subsequent fighting in Gaza here.Today’s clickables: Introducing new co-host Ari Weitzman! Thank you. For everything. And I'll see you soon.
Dear listeners,Christmas is around the corner, which means we are preparing for our annual break over the New Year here at Tangle.2023 has been exciting, grueling, and life changing. Every year since I started Tangle, I've taken a couple weeks off right after Christmas and through the New Year. And every year, I encourage our readers and listeners to do the same. Following the news closely is hard, as is being an engaged citizen, and it's important not to burn yourself out. If you are able, step away from the news for at least a few days, spend some time with family, get your feet back on the ground, and try to hit the reset button for the New Year. I’ll be doing my best to unplug, reset, evaluate the year, and enjoy some much-needed time with my wife and family — to whom I have a massive debt of quality time to repay accrued over the past couple months of unprecedented work. Our team is taking off from December 25th until January 5th. You'll hear from us at least once over that break when we release our newest YouTube video (which I think is one of our most important videos yet), then potentially again in the event of a major news drop. Tangle members are also going to get a special edition of the Sunday newsletter on New Year’s Eve. Until then, happy New Year, Merry Christmas, happy holidays, and please take our annual end-of-year survey and/or become a member before our prices go up!With much gratitude,Isaac & the Tangle teamYou can subscribe to Tangle by clicking here or drop something in our tip jar by clicking here. Texas makes illegal immigration a state crime.
The Texas immigration law. This past Monday, Texas Governor Greg Abbott (R) signed SB4, a state bill creating a process for state officials to deport migrants who have crossed the border without legal authorization. The law authorizes Texas law enforcement to stop, arrest, and jail migrants suspected of entering the country illegally. SB4 was passed by the legislature earlier this year and is set to take effect in March 2024, barring legal challenges. The American Civil Liberties Union has sued the state over the law, calling it unconstitutional because the federal government has sole authority over immigration. A conversation with Palestinian-American Yousef Munayyer
The fundamental promise of Tangle is to share the best perspectives from across the political spectrum on the most divisive issues of the day.For the last few weeks, we’ve been covering the Israel-Palestine conflict and everything that has happened since October 7. Throughout that time, you have gotten several Tangle editions that included a wide range of perspectives on this conflict: Israeli, Palestinian, American, European, and, of course, my own. But given the personal nature of this story to me, you’ve gotten an unusually frequent rate of editions that included just my own personal views on what is going on — including last Friday’s 10 thoughts about what is happening in Israel.Of course, Tangle is my publication, and it’s okay for me to occasionally climb out on some limbs and share my own views independent of others. But in times like these, I also think it is critical for me to elevate perspectives that are decidedly different from my own. At times, my efforts to do that have created some content that is — for lack of a better word — unhelpful. But those same efforts often create content that I find very valuable.Yesterday was one of those times. I got to sit down with Yousef Munayyer, a Palestinian-American writer and political analyst who is the head of the Palestine/Israel program at the Arab Center in Washington, D.C. Munayyer is one of my go-to voices on this conflict, as evidenced by the fact that I actually interviewed him for our podcast way back in 2021 — before I even had a proper microphone to record these episodes. Despite the difficult circumstances surrounding our conversation, it was great to bring him back on. Just like in 2021, while I have bones to pick on plenty of points Munayyer made, I also learned a lot, found his arguments cogent and challenging, felt my own position shifting on certain specifics, and was left feeling that these kinds of conversations should be more frequent. In fact, they need to be more frequent. You can also check out our latest videos, and interview with presidential candidate Marianne Williamson here and a look at what a potential second term for Donald Trump could look like, here. You can subscribe to Tangle by clicking here or drop something in our tip jar by clicking here. Trump's case goes to SCOTUS.
Trump and the Supreme Court. On Monday afternoon, the Supreme Court granted Special Counsel Jack Smith's request to bring before the court the question of whether Trump can be tried on criminal charges that he conspired to overturn the 2020 election. The war in Ukraine, and the U.S. funding fight.
The Ukraine war. On Saturday, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg warned that there could be bad news coming out of Ukraine in the coming weeks, as fears of a stalemate with Russia grow. Henry Kissinger's death.
Henry Kissinger's death. On Wednesday, Henry Kissinger, the long-time American diplomat and political scientist who was the only person to ever serve concurrently as both secretary of state and national security adviser, died at the age of 100. Kissinger, who was born in Bavaria in 1923 to a family of German Jews who fled to the United States during the rise of the Nazis, was one of the most polarizing figures in American history. He served under presidents Ronald Reagan and Gerald Ford, though he advised 12 presidents from both parties — more than a quarter of all men who have ever held the office. You can read today's podcast here, our “Under the Radar” story here and here, and today’s “Have a nice day” story here. The Voting Rights Act challenge.
The Voting Rights Act. Last week, a federal appeals court issued a ruling that only the U.S. government, not private citizens or civil rights groups, can sue under the Voting Rights Act (VRA). If the ruling is appealed to and upheld by the Supreme Court, or adopted by other courts, the decision would have a sweeping impact on voting rights across the country. The Eighth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals issued the ruling in a 2 to 1 decision. You can read today's podcast here, our “Under the Radar” story here, and today’s “Have a nice day” story here. A Supreme Court case that could reshape the government.
Securities and Exchange Commission v. Jarkesy. On Wednesday, the Supreme Court will hear a three-part case on the constitutionality of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). Because of an unusual decision by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 5th Circuit, the Supreme Court is going to be evaluating three distinct challenges to the SEC at the same time. The situation arose after the 5th Circuit ruled 2-1 in favor of three separate arguments, invalidating each aspect of the SEC's operations that were being challenged. If the ruling were to go unaddressed, Congress would have to substantially change portions of the law based on the 5th Circuit's ruling, hence the Supreme Court's decision to take them all up together. You can read today's podcast here, our “Under the Radar” story here, and today’s “Have a nice day” story here. The George Santos ethics report.
The George Santos ethics probe. On November 17, House investigators released an ethics report that determined Rep. George Santos (R-NY) knowingly violated ethics guidelines, House rules, and criminal laws. The scathing report detailed alleged misconduct that included stealing money from his own campaign, creating fake loans, engaging in fraud, and deceiving donors about how their money would be used. Santos allegedly used some of his campaign funds for things like spa charges, paying his own credit card debt, and an account on the adult website OnlyFans. The committee voted unanimously to refer the report to the Justice Department for investigation. You can read today's podcast here, our “Under the Radar” story here, and today’s “Have a nice day” story here.
