The first Harris-Trump debate. On Tuesday evening, Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump faced off for their first debate at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia, PA. It was the second presidential debate of the 2024 campaign, but the first one since Harris replaced President Joe Biden as the Democratic Party’s presidential nominee. Last week, a 14-year-old boy killed two fellow students and two teachers and wounded nine others when he opened fire inside Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia. On Tuesday, two Russian ballistic missiles hit a military institute and a hospital in Poltava, Ukraine, killing 51 and injuring 271, according to Ukrainian officials. The attack was the deadliest strike on Ukraine this year. On Wednesday, another Russian strike in Lviv killed seven civilians. Russia’s latest attacks follow a Ukrainian ground incursion into Russia. On August 6, Ukrainian troops entered Kursk, a Russian region north of Ukraine. Last week, NPR reported that an official at the Arlington National Cemetery (ANC) had a confrontation with Trump campaign staff members who were filming and taking photos in a restricted area of the cemetery. That area, named Section 60, is reserved for soldiers killed while serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. The Harris-Walz interview. On Thursday, Vice President Kamala Harris and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz spoke with CNN’s Dana Bash in their first interview since Harris replaced President Joe Biden as the Democratic nominee for president. On Monday, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg sent a letter to the Republican-led House Judiciary Committee claiming that the Biden administration had pressured the company to "censor" content related to Covid-19 in 2021. On Sunday morning, around 100 Israeli warplanes launched airstrikes targeting hundreds of rocket launchers across southern Lebanon; Israel said its attack preempted a planned offensive from Hezbollah. Shortly after, Hezbollah launched hundreds of rockets and drones it said were targeting military bases and missile defense positions in the Israeli-controlled Golan Heights and across Northern Israel. Hezbollah claimed the attack successfully hit its targets, while the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) said it was “mostly” thwarted, causing light damage to some homes while one Israeli sailor was killed by missile shrapnel. On Saturday, French authorities arrestedTelegram founder and CEO Pavel Durov as part of an investigation into illicit activity on the messaging app, including money laundering, drug trafficking, and child abuse. The arrest comes as governments across the globe grapple with how to best regulate social media and messaging platforms. On Friday, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. suspended his presidential campaign and endorsed former President Donald Trump. Kennedy plans to remove his name from the ballot in ten battleground states but remain an option in safe Republican and Democrat states to give his supporters in noncompetitive states the option to vote for him without playing spoiler. On Sunday, the Democratic National Committee (DNC) released the party’s 2024 platform. I'm out at the Democratic National Convention this week in Chicago. A lot of readers have been asking why we didn’t go to the Republican National Convention. The answer is pretty simple: We applied for press passes to both, but the RNC didn’t accept us. We don’t know why. It is not because of any perceived partisanship — the RNC approved many liberal reporters, and here at the DNC I’ve seen everyone from Charlie Kirk to Kellyanne Conway, and Fox News has their own booth. On July 29, three girls were killed in a stabbing attack at a dance class in Southport, England. Eight children and two adults were severely injured in the attack, including Leanne Lucas, 35, who organized the event and was stabbed while shielding two girls from the attacker. The global market disruption. On Monday, leading indices used to gauge the investor market across the globe plunged. In the United States, the S&P 500 slid by 3%, the Dow Jones Industrial average dropped 2.6%, and the Nasdaq Composite index decreased by 3.4%. The U.S.-Russia prisoner swap. On Thursday, the Biden administration announced a prisoner exchange between several European nations, the U.S., and Russia to secure the release of three U.S. citizens, one U.S. legal resident, and twelve others. On Tuesday, The Heritage Foundation’s Paul Dans announced he was stepping down from his position as director of the 2025 Presidential Transition Project, also known as Project 2025. Dans’s exit comes after weeks of Democratic criticism of the project on the campaign trail and repeated disavowals from former President Donald Trump, who has insisted Project 2025 is not a blueprint for his second term. On Monday, the National Electoral Council (CNE) of Venezuela announced that President Nicolás Maduro had won Venezuela's presidential election, defeating challenger Edmundo González by a total of 51% to 44%. The results were immediately contested, with leaders from a coalition of opposition parties claiming that vote tallies they received showed González up by 40 points. Biden’s Supreme Court reforms. On Monday, President Joe Biden proposed a set of reforms for the U.S. Supreme Court. The proposal recommends two new laws: one that sets an 18-year term limit for justices, and another that creates an enforceable code of conduct and ethics rules for the court. Kamala Harris’s pick for vice president. Four days after President Joe Biden announced he was dropping his reelection bid, Vice President Kamala Harris has reportedly secured the support of enough Democratic delegates to become the party’s presumptive presidential nominee. Harris is now weighing her options for running mate and will likely make her selection within the next two weeks. Bob Menendez (D-NJ) was convicted on all counts of bribery, acting as a foreign agent for Egypt, obstruction of justice, extortion, and conspiring to commit those crimes. On Thursday June 27th, 2024, President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump took the stage in the first of two planned televised debates. The debate, which took place in Atlanta and was hosted by CNN, was unique in a few ways. The Commission on Presidential Debates, which has organized debates for nearly 40 years, was excluded after both Trump and Biden expressed their dissatisfaction over the organization’s handling of previous debates. CNN had its own debate format that both candidates agreed to. There was no audience, no opening remarks, microphones were cut off after each candidate's allotted time was used, no pre-written notes, and no props or contact with campaign staff during the debate. This also marked the first time two U.S. Presidents have debated each other for the chance to reclaim the White House. What ultimately transpired in this debate was 90 minutes of lies, insults, incoherent answers and minimal substance. President Biden appeared to be losing his voice, which his campaign attributed to “battling a cold”. He struggled with completing his thoughts and communicating his positions. The fallout left the Democratic Party in turmoil, with some calling on Biden to step down. J.D. Vance. On Monday, former President Donald Trump announced freshman Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH) as his running mate for the 2024 election. Before his election to the Senate, Vance was best known as the author of “Hillbilly Elegy,” which describes his experience growing up in a poverty-stricken home in Ohio. Vance, 39, is the first millennial nominated to either party's major ticket. The Trump assassination attempt. On Saturday, former President Donald Trump survived an assassination attempt during a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. Around six minutes into his remarks, gunshots rang out and Trump grabbed his right ear, dropping to the ground as Secret Service agents swarmed him. Moments later, Trump stood up surrounded by Secret Service with blood covering his ear and running down his face, raised his fist to the crowd, and mouthed “fight” multiple times. He was quickly led off stage and taken to a local hospital. Predictably, thousands of readers asked about how to watch or listen to the TED talk, so we decided to highlight the video in the newsletter once the final version was released. It took a few months, but my talk has finally been published.In it, I discuss Tangle’s mission, the work we are doing, and the current state of U.S. polarization. Anyone who reads Tangle should find it interesting, so we’re sharing the talk with everyone here in lieu of a regular newsletter. The Republican Party’s platform. Over the weekend, the Republican party released its 2024 campaign platform, the first time it has released a party platform since 2016. The document — titled “2024 GOP Platform Make America Great Again!” — includes 20 promises and 10 chapters outlining the governing priorities for a Republican president. The French elections. Over the weekend, a leftist coalition called the New Popular Front (NFP) won a plurality of seats in the 2024 French legislative election in a surprise upset over a right-wing movement that was expected to dominate the election. Joe Biden’s reelection campaign. In the eleven days since President Joe Biden’s widely criticized performance in the first presidential debate, a growing number of donors, allies, and Democratic lawmakers have called on the president to drop out of the race. Several polls released in the last week show former President Donald Trump’s lead over Biden increasing, adding to Democrats’ fears that the president’s reelection effort is failing with Election Day less than four months away (though a Bloomberg poll released on Saturday showed Biden leading Trump in Michigan and Wisconsin for the first time). City of Grants Pass v. Johnson. On Friday, the Supreme Court voted 6-3 along ideological lines to uphold ordinances in the city of Grants Pass, Oregon, that outlaw sleeping and camping in public places while using materials like blankets, pillows, or cardboard boxes for warmth or shelter. The decision overturns a lower court’s determination that such laws are unconstitutional and grants greater authority to local governments to address homelessness in their communities.
