This episode of Tamarindo is a partnership with the National Hispanic Cultural Center (NHCC), an organization dedicated to making a cultural home for the diverse identities that shape the community. October 3rd marked Latina Equal Pay day, a day of action that calls attention to the Latina wage gap. Our friends at the NHCC invited Tamarindo to lead a conversation about how we can raise the pay for Latinas. We had a fantastic panel of Latina changemakers:Melanie Fontes Rainer who serves as the Director of the Office for Civil Rights at the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services where she leads the Department’s enforcement of federal civil rights and privacy laws and directs related policy and strategic initiatives.Stephanie Rodriguez who is the Secretary for the New Mexico Higher Education Department. Pola Lopez, a New Mexico-born, self-taught artist with a rich background in the Southwestern cultural heritage. She has been a prominent figure in the New Mexico art scene.Even though October 3rd is behind us, the work to bring pay equity for Latinas is ongoing. In this episode of Tamarindo, we sit down with Giselle Carrillo, an educator, surfer, and founder of Los Courage Camps, an initiative aimed at creating equity in the surfing community. Giselle shares her personal journey from growing up in East Los Angeles to discovering surfing later in life, and how it transformed her sense of courage and purpose. Undocumented students, organizers and allies across the country have used Salgado’s artwork to call attention to the migrant rights movement. His work has been displayed at the Oakland Museum, SFMOMA and Smithsonian. Born and raised in Boyle Heights Gonzalez is a MacArthur Fellow (2022), Fulbright Garcia Robles (2007-2008), Ford (2012-2013), Woodrow Wilson Fellow (206-2017) and United States Artist Fellow (2020). Her academic interests have been fueled by her own musicianship as a singer/songwriter and percussionist for Grammy Award (2013) winning band Quetzal. Gonzalez along with her partner Quetzal Flores has been instrumental in catalyzing the transnational dialogue between Chicanx/Latinx communities in the U.S and Jarocho communities in Veracruz, Mexico. In the summer of 2017 Gonzalez’s tarima (stomp box) and zapateado dance shoes were acquired by the National Museum of American History and are on permanent display in the One Nation Many Voices exhibit.
