Should A Woman Initiate? One Man’s Perspective with Chad Johnson

When it comes to dating, should a woman initiate? You guys know what I think about this topic (it-s a non-issue, and it doesn't matter who initiates as long as the relationship is made of give-and-take thereafter), but I decided to ask my friend, Chad Johnson, to give me his male-perspective on the issue in Part 2 of our conversation. Should a Woman Initiate? Let me just warn you, things go down in this podcast - because Chad and I certainly don't agree on everything, and I even call him out on some of his perspectives. We talk about should a woman initiate, what to do about getting ghosted, and so may other great topics. #1 MOST Downloaded: How Important Is Sexual & Physical Attraction. A Candid Conversation with Christian Men

We've been taking the last few weeks here at the Love + Relationships Podcast to highlight the TOP 5 MOST DOWNLOADED EPISODES! Whether you need to re-listen to this episode, or you've never heard it before, I know it will challenge and encourage you as it has for so many others! Coming in at #1 most downloaded episode of all time... How much does physical attraction matter in a relationship? What if you know someone is really good for you, but you don't find yourself attracted to them at all? What if there's strong attraction, but qualities and traits missing from what you're looking for? What if you're married, and start struggling with physical attraction in your marriage? Questions about physical attraction are some of the most frequently asked questions I get on my blog. Because physical attraction is, without a doubt, an important part of a relationship. But have we gotten to a point where our expectations of physical attraction in a relationship are unrealistic? My Mind Says Yes - My Body Says No? In today's episode, I'm having a candid chat about physical attraction with two different guys. First, I'm talking with a young man who is trying to understand how important physical attraction should be in his search for love. I find out that his relationship history has a big part to do with his expectations, and you'll find out why when you tune in. After our conversation, I bring on my good friend and prolific relationship author, Gary Thomas. Gary and I dive into some really hot topics about attraction in ways that not many people are talking about, and you're going to love this candid conversation. Physical Attraction 101 In this hot-topic episode, we cover: 2 IMPORTANT Questions you need to ask yourself to know whether or not you've got a healthy understanding of physical attraction. The actual definition of attraction and why it matters that you know it. We discuss the many different levels of attraction and how attraction is multi-faceted. How to prioritize the importance of physical attraction. Understanding your typical "type" and when to be open to other options. Exploring the things that are influencing your perspective of beauty and physical attraction, and how to control those things. Learning whether or not you're living in "the extremes" and whether or not you have healthy expectations. Making sure you have a realistic understanding of who YOU are and your own level of "physical attraction" in the equation of what you're looking for (yep, I said it). The percentage of people who are struggling with attraction in marriage and what to do about it! Three things you can do to increase your attraction to your spouse. I reveal the one thing I was MOST AFRAID to talk about regarding physical attraction in my book Choosing Marriage. The one prayer Gary Thomas prayed in order to continue growing in life long physical attraction toward his wife! Single, dating, or married this show has something for you. You're going to love these candid conversations, so grab your notebook, and get ready to write down the nuggets of truth from this fun, honest, and challenging Episode 009 of the Love + Relationships Podcast. #2 Most Downloaded: Casual Dating. What’s too casual?

We're taking the next few weeks here at the Love + Relationships Podcast to highlight the TOP 5 MOST DOWNLOADED EPISODES! Whether you need to re-listen to this episode, or you've never heard it before, I know it will challenge and encourage you as it has for so many others! Coming in at #2..... There's a lot of casual dating going on these days...and it's starting to get confusing. Is it okay to date casually? And if so, is there a limit to how casual you should be when interacting with the opposite sex. Today's question comes from a young woman who is struggling with the latest trend of casual dating where a guy can hang out with as many girls as he wants (or vice versa) in the name of "casual dating". Casual Dating Can't Stay Casual The problem is that people tend to think in two extremes. Either they are way too casual and keep the relationship ambiguous and commitment free for FAR too long, or they're on the other end of the spectrum in which they see dating as a near marriage commitment. They're unwilling to consider anything casual and they expect a relationship to start seriously from the get-go. But BOTH of these mentalities can be harmful, and in this episode of the podcast we talk through the ins and outs of how to do "casual dating" in a healthy way, and the red flags you need to be aware of along the way. I'm going to bring up a few important questions you need to ask yourself if you want to know how to do causal dating well. #3 Most Downloaded: Sex Drive & Singleness: Controlling Your Lust Before It Controls You

We're taking the next few weeks here at the Love + Relationships Podcast to highlight the TOP 5 MOST DOWNLOADED EPISODES! Whether you need to re-listen to this episode, or you've never heard it before, I know it will challenge and encourage you as it has for so many others! Coming in at #3..... What do I do with my raging sex drive while I'm single? I get that question a lot. But the problem is: not too many Christians are teaching about this subject. I can't recall when I heard a sermon about sexual struggles on a Sunday morning, can you? But dealing with your sex drive is a problem that singles have to face on a regular basis....one that will ultimately have an impact on their future marriages as well, because learning to "tame the drive" is something you're going to deal with after you're married as well. So I thought it was about time to do an episode about sex drive and singleness. LET'S TALK ABOUT...THE SEX DRIVE When we talk about sex on the podcast, everyone gets excited...no pun intended. So, without further to do, click the links below to listen this insightful (and at times, awkward) conversation, as I answer today's caller who is wondering how on earth can he deal with "the sex drive" - as he puts it - while he waits for marriage. In this episode I cover: Why your sex drive (annoying as it may be at times while you're single) is actually a good thing. Why the sex for marriage sentiment is actually backed up by psychology. The dangerous power of premarital sex. Why your sex drive is actually a symptom of something ELSE going on. The #1 way to stop having shame about your sex drive. How to fuel the spirit and starve the flesh, and what that means for your sex life. Some practical ways to control your sex drive while you're single. Identifying things you are doing that might be growing your sex drive instead of controlling your sex drive. Why learning to control your sex drive is something you'll need after you're married as well. And a whole...lot...more! You're going to love this candid conversation so get ready to for this necessary, honest, and insightful Episode 011 of the Love + Relationships Podcast. Dealing with Anxiety with Ashley Willis

Some of the most prominent people in ministry and leadership are dealing with anxiety, you just don't know about it. The reason is that anxiety doesn't discriminate. It doesn't care about how old you are, what religion you are, or your gender. But unfortunately, not enough people of faith are talking about dealing with anxiety in an open and honest way, and so many people end up struggling alone and in isolation. That's why I'm excited about today's conversation. You guys have heard me talk about my personal journey dealing with anxiety, but today I've invited my friend Ashley Willis, who has walked through her own battle with anxiety. She's so open and honest about her journey, and how she found peace...and I know this episode will encourage you if you've ever struggled with anxiety as well. Play Hard To Get (and other bad relationship advice)

Play hard to get. If you're in the world of dating, or were at some point in your life - you've definitely heard the relationship advice that tells you to play hard to get. Don't look too interested. Don't call for at least 3 days. Make sure they don't know how much you like them. Don't text back right away. But is this relationship advice any good? Play Hard To Get There's a reason why this is common relationship advice. We want to play the game of relationships, and make ourselves feel like we're in control rather than feeling like someone is in control of us. But there are two major problems that the "play hard to get" mentality creates in relationships. Today on the podcast, I'm explaining both of those problems and why this is actually BAD relationship advice, and what you should do instead. Don't be fooled by the play hard to get game...because you're going to end up losing in the end. Marriage Should Make You Happy (and other bad relationship advice) with Gary Thomas

Marriage should make you happy. That's the relationship advice we hear all the time. But is it even true? How much weight do we need to put on our happiness? What is the secret ingredient to creating happiness in marriage? Does happiness create a good marriage, or does a good marriage create happiness? And what happens when you're not happy? Is it even realistic to say we're going to be happy all the time in marriage? We need to take the time to evaluate this relationship advice, and make sure we're questioning it and seeing it for what it's worth. Marriage Should Make You Happy - or Should It? Today, my friend, pastor, and bestselling author of Sacred Marriage, Gary Thomas, helps me tackle this important bad relationship advice, because it's advice that's hurting many marriages. We're going to take a look at both scripture and psychology and get to the root of this bad relationship advice, and offer you a BETTER perspective - a perspective that helps us look at holiness before we look at happiness. You’ll Just Know When You Meet The Right Person (and other bad relationship advice)

You'll "just know" When You Meet The Right Person...that's what they try and tell you. "You lock eyes, as you glance across the room at each other. And all of a sudden, somehow, you just know." The worst relationship advice I've ever heard comes from the people who tell you you'll just know when you meet the person you're going to marry. It's a cookie cutter formula that can't - and shouldn't - be applied to all relationships. It's caused a lot of confusion along the way, and caused many people to pass up very good relationships because they were expecting some sort of an intense feeling or instant knowledge when the right person came along. You'll Just Know? In today's episode I share my personal experience with this bad relationship advice (because I TOTALLY DID NOT JUST KNOW!!!) and then I offer a counter perspective to help you navigate this important area of your life, because there ARE some important things to look for in looking for love...but it doesn't just happen at first glance. Women Should Not Initiate (and other bad relationship advice)

When it comes to relationships, have you ever heard the phrase, "women should not initiate"? This is all too common advice, and unfortunately, it's advice that comes with a lot of controversy as well as negative repercussion. So should women initiate? And what does that look like in dating, as well as in marriage? The bad relationship advice series continues at TrueLoveDates.com by unpacking this relationship advice and why it can actually wreak havoc on your relationship in the long run. Should Women Initiate? I'm joined by my friend and author, Phylicia Masonheimer, as we tag-team this important subject. Both Phylicia and I heard and applied this bad relationship advice that women should not initiate at different points in our lives, and in this episode we each unpack how it impacted our respective marriages, discuss why we think this is bad advice, and then offer you a healthier alternative to relationships. If you're a woman who has ever wondered about a woman initiating in a relationship, or if you're a man who has ever had questions about this topic, you don't want to miss this candid episode that's not only grounded in psychology, but in biblical truth. Just Wait on God (and other bad relationship advice)

"You just need to wait on God to bring you a relationship." If you're single, there's a good chance you've heard that advice at some point along the way. The problem is that what it means to "wait on God" often get's misinterpreted into meaning that you should DO NOTHING. Too many singles are on the side of the spectrum of passivity when it comes to their relationships, because they have been taught that waiting on God means you do less and trust God more. In today's episode, I'm unpacking why I think this is "bad advice" and what waiting on God should look and feel like when it comes to our romantic relationships. How do you wait on God, yet still continue to pursue your heart's desire for relationships? Is waiting a God an action, or a place of the heart? That's what we're talking about today!! Married Couples Need A Weekly Date Night Out (and other bad relationship advice)

Married couples need a weekly date night out...you've heard that advice before, but is it good advice? The answer might surprise you!! We're starting the bad relationship advice series here at TrueLoveDates.com!!! In this series, I'm bringing you all the BAD relationship advice that you've heard over the years, and maybe you even thought it was GOOD advice, but it's advice that's actually harmful and even ruining relationships. The first bad relationship advice we're starting with is so APPLICABLE for today!! I recorded this episode LONG before Corona Quarantine, and here we are, stuck at home, unable to go anywhere even if we WANT TO. Date night out is impossible!! So what do we do? DATE NIGHT IN NOT DATE NIGHT OUT The relationship advice that "couples need a weekly date night out" isn't just unlikely right now, it's impossible. If the health of our marriage hinged on our weekly date nights out, we'd be done for right now....and so would marriages across the country. We can't actually go on a date night out right now anyway, but we can do something even better for our marriage - we can go IN. Healthy marriages don't hinge on going out, but on going IN. Connecting with one another on a deep and meaningful way. In today's episode I'm going to tell you what it means to "go in" in your relationship. Also, after you listen to this episode, make sure to tune in to 10 Date Night In Ideas....hopefully they inspire you to take the time to go in with your relationship! Quarantine Ep. 4: “Social Distancing” from Toxic People with Gary Thomas

There are toxic people everywhere. In churches, schools, at work, and sometimes right in the middle of your own household. And it's important to understand that fact because relationships have the power to bring life, or death. They have the power to lift you up, or bring you down. Right now in our country, the word "social distancing" is being used very liberally to help set boundaries with our physical space, decreasing our chances of getting the Corona Virus. But what if we were to use this time to take inventory of all our relationships, and which ones we need to continue investing in, as well as which ones we need to set boundaries with? Because one day, the Corona Virus pandemic will slow down, and we will go back to life as usual. We've got to make choices about who we allow into our life and who we don't. So let me remind you: some toxic people are worthy of social distancing, whether we're in quarantine or not. Toxic People Today on the podcast, I'm joined by my friend and pastor/author Gary Thomas. In today's episode we're sharing: What defines a toxic person? What does the bible say about setting boundaries with toxic people? How did Jesus model walking away from toxic people? What are some practical ways we can set boundaries with toxic people? Tune in to Quarantine Episode #4 of the Love + Relationships Podcast and subscribe to the show by clicking on the button below! Quarantine Ep. 3: Hand Washing and Heart Washing

There's been a lot of talk about hand washing lately, as the CDC continually reminds us of the importance of washing our hands during a pandemic. We're a hand washing family, and we always emphasize hand washing whether or not there's a national crisis. But with all the talk about hand washing lately, it's no surprise that as I was reading through the book of Mark recently, the chapter on hand washing stood out to me like never before. Hand + Heart Washing Jesus and his disciplines were confronted by the religious leaders of the time and criticized for their lack of ceremonial hand washing. Jesus' response to those leaders was so powerful, and so applicable to today. So I'm calling today's episode Hand Washing and Heart Washing, and I hope you'll take a minute to tune into this perspective on ways that we can focus in on spiritual cleansing during this time where our tendency is just to focus on physical cleanliness. Winter: The Frost of Apathy (and how to deal with it).

We're in the thick of Winter, here in Pennsylvania. And there's a lot we can learn from this season when it comes to relationships. Every season of a relationship comes with important ingredients that can make or break your relationship. If you aren't aware of what the seasons bring, you won't be able to USE them to strengthen your relationship. Today we're talking about the season of Winter. It's the season when things begin to cool off, and emotions begin to die down. It can be a season when people struggle with apathy in their relationship and feel like they're stuck. There's a type of frost that happens in relationships as well, it's the frost of apathy. The Frost of Apathy in a Relationship Winter has some really important aspects that we need. It's a season of comfort and familiarity. It's a season of getting used to the mundane, and making the most of day to day life - because romance isn't just about the grand gestures, it's about the regular moments of life. But sometimes, this comfort can turn into apathy. Winter is a season that you pass through, not stay in. Seasons aren't meant to be stayed in, they're meant to be passed through. We've got to be able to take the right steps in Winter, or we'll end up getting stuck in a relationship that has frozen over. Tune in to today's episode as we talk about the frost of apathy in a relationship, and why it's one of the most dangerous aspect of winter. We'll also talk about HOW to get over the frost of apathy in a relationships, and three steps we can take to begin melting that frost as we continue our discussion on the four seasons of every healthy relationship, from my brand new book, Love In Every Season! Colors of Fall: Questions To ASK Your Partner Not ASSUME

Today we're talking questions to ask your partner, because we often assume instead of ask...and end up with some major conflict. When it comes to relationships, things aren't always as they appear. Every relationship goes through a season where they navigate through the realization that the person they're with has flaws, failures, and sometimes - major issues. True colors begin to shine through, and sometimes those colors are beautiful, but sometimes, they're not so beautiful. This, my friends, is the season of fall. Fall is when your true colors start to shine through: your sins, struggles, failures and flaws. You realize you're two different people with different expectations, needs, personalities, and most significantly - different backgrounds, family of origins, and ways of looking at the world. Questions To Ask Your Partner - Not Assume All the things you ASSUMED about this person, are revealed and replaced by the TRUTH of who this person actually is. In order to really understand a person in their entirety, we've got to learn to ask more than we assume. So today we're talking about specific areas you need to ASK and not ASSUME when it comes to learning about the person you're with. Today on the podcast we're talking about this aspect of the season of fall and addressing questions to ask your partner, as we continue our discussion on the four seasons of every healthy relationship, from my brand new book, Love In Every Season! Spring: Is Your Relationship Growing?

We are just ONE WEEK away from the release of my new book, Love In Every Season. So today's question couldn't have come at a better time. We're digging deep into the four seasons of a relationship starting with the season of Spring! Spring is the season of growth, it's the season when attraction is blossoming and emotions are blooming. It's the season of planting the right seeds and taking out the weeds. While there's so much I could cover in the season of Spring (becoming friends before lovers, the four laws of attraction, redefining our "type", planting the right seeds, etc - and I cover it ALL in Love In Every Season), today's podcast episode is going to focus on one specific dynamic of Spring: growth. Is your relationship growing? What does it mean to be in a give-and-take relationship, and why does it matter? Relationships have to grow in order to survive. If you're not seeing characteristics of growth in your relationship - something is wrong. Click the buttons below to subscribe and check out Episode 53 of the Love + Relationships Podcast! Dating Someone Who Is Divorced

Q: What advice do you have on dating someone who is divorced? Dating someone who is divorced is a topic that has come up more and more over the years. With the age of divorce getting younger, and the number of divorces getting higher over the years - it makes sense that dating someone who is divorced is a topic that keeps coming back around during my question and answer time. I have clients, friends, and family members who are divorced, and with that in mind, I wanted to make sure to answer this question in a way that honored the person who was asking the question - as well as respected those who have been divorced. Stance vs. Status: Dating Someone Who Is Divorced If you've read my blog or books, or listened to my podcast, at some point you've heard me say that in any relationship where there is conflict - there are always two people involved which means two people who need to take ownership of their role in that conflict. Divorce is no exception to that rule. If we want to establish healthy relationships, we all have something to own in the process of building them. So my answer focuses a lot more on the stance of the person you're dating, rather than their relationship status. You'll understand more about what I mean by this when you tune in to today's episode about Dating Someone Who Is Divorced! Click the buttons below to subscribe and check out Episode 51 of the Love + Relationships Podcast! Want to be on the Love + Relationships Podcast? Leadership, Submission and Headship in Marriage with Tim + Anne

Today on the podcast, my friends Tim + Anne join me to talk about headship in marriage. If you've ever wrestled with the concept of leadership, submission, or headship in marriage than you don't want to miss this episode. I have LOVED Tim + Anne's biblical approach to marriage, and their views and ideas have put into words in a way that no one else has, the way that John and I do marriage. We're a team...and we do life together. Together: Co-Leadership In Marriage I invited Tim + Anne to join me today on the Love + Relationships podcast to talk about their views on marriage and their approach to "co-leadership" in their relationship. Not only are they a wise couple, but they're a couple who loves God and one another, and it's evidenced in how they live out their life. I hope you'll give this episode a listen and go in with an open mind about this concept of "co-leadership" in marriage. It's not the traditional approach, but there's certainly a lot to learn from their biblical view of marriage. Walking Away From Toxic Relationships: With Gary Thomas

Today we're talking toxic relationships both in dating and in marriage. Q: When it comes to general relationships, how do you know when a relationship is worth working on, and how do you know when it's time to walk away? A: When it is time to walk away from an unhealthy relationship? That's a question we're diving in to today. Christians tend to really struggle with the idea of walking away from relationships, even when they get to a place where they're harmful or even dangerous. I'm joined by my friend and bestselling author, Gary Thomas, to tag-team this question today because he just finished writing all about toxic relationships, and it's a conversation we need to bring to the surface. Toxic Relationships In today's episode we're covering: Why is it actually biblical for us to walk away from toxic relationships? What are some key motivators to remember when it comes to making the choice to walk away from a toxic relationship? How do we recognize a relationship that's hurting us? How to handle toxic relationships in dating as well as in marriage. And so much more! Click the buttons below to subscribe and check out Episode 45 of the Love + Relationships Podcast!
