214: Don't Worry About Problems that You Don't Have
I am so blessed to get presented with a variety of opportunities that extend beyond the Support is Sexy podcast and that are often a reflection of the hard work I've done over the past 20 years in media. And while I examine all opportunities with an open mind, a prayerful heart and a confidence that lets me know that all opportunities – even the ones I may decline – come my way for a reason, I still find myself putting the worry before the opportunity. So while I'm thinking and praying and being open minded, there is a part of my mind that is already past the opportunity and thinking about all of the implications it could mean for me and for my life and for my family and for my future and what about this and what if this means I'm going to have to do that, but what if that happens and oh gosh what about….? This is what previous Support is Sexy podcast guest and Drop the Ball author Tiffany Dufu says is worrying about problems that you don't have, which is a lesson a mentor taught her when she did the same. Since this is something that happened to me just recently, I wanted to share this message with you all as you weigh the opportunities that present themselves in your life and give a few reasons why you want to be aware of whether you're worrying about problems you don't even have. 212: 10 Ways to Know If You're REALLY Serious about Your Business
How serious are you about your business? This is a question I had to SERIOUSLY ask myself within this past week. I had one of those weeks that online entrepreneurs dread: My web site, elaynefluker.com, was down and completely inaccessible to my audience and to me for the past week. ACK!! It was a rough one, but as always, I challenged myself to think about the lesson in it all. Through my tears (kidding, sort of) I determined that my seriousness about my business was being tested here. There were areas where I had clearly slacked, or hadn't taken all the steps I need to to make sure this business that I have invested more than a year's worth of time, effort, money and plenty more into, was protected. Can you relate? Is there an are in your business where you're unnecessarily slacking? Time to ask yourself WHY! And it's time to put a few things in place to make sure you cover your bases, because your business matters. So don't take it for granted. Take it seriously. 209: Take the Hill!
Now if you and I are connected on social media – especially on Instagram, you have probably seen a post or two from me about running. I love running, especially running outdoors, and it's a form of not only exercise but of meditation for me. I've also shared some of my recent challenges with running thanks to a knee that wants me to slow it up a bit. But overall, outdoor distance running is my thing, and while I do shorter runs during the week, for the past six weeks or so at the time of this recording, I've started going to the park near where I live here in Georgia each weekend and doing the beautiful five and half mile trail there. Now along this trail, there are plenty of trees and wildlife and lakes and just everything that you'd want to take in during a run. And there are ALSO plenty of hills – looooong and in some cases steeeeep hills. Because the trail is still new to me, I don't know exactly when they're coming, but I know they're coming! And boy! Does my mind go through all kinds of changes as I start to approach them! Notice that I said my MIND – not my body! My body, other than this knee challenge that I mentioned, is fine as long as I take it slow. But my mind??? The mental acrobatics that it goes through to convince me to stop before I get to that hill – and when that hill is in view – is remarkable! So during this weekend's run – as I dug in and ran up one of those many hills, I started to think about the hills we all face in our lives and in our businesses, and how many times we may either try to avoid them, give up when we encounter them, or get halfway to the top and turn back around. Can you relate? So on this episode, I want to share some words of encouragement and a few reasons for women entrepreneurs to TAKE THE HILL in your business and life! DON'T MISS AN EPISODE! 206: The Process of Elimination: How to Let Go of What's Keeping You Sick, Stuck and Dissatisfied
Food poisoning is a beast -- and not a sweet one. I'm recovering from my last bout -- the third in the past few months -- and it has pushed me to figure out what the heck is going on. Something in my diet is not working, something has got to go! So I'm going through the process of elimination, removing the things that I think are no longer good for me, seeing how it goes, and then replacing them with better, healthier options. The same is necessary for us in our businesses, careers and lives. Occasionally, we need to go through the process of elimination and remove those things (or people) that no longer serve us. As difficult as it may be at times, doing so creates space for something or someone that may be a better fit to come in. In this episode of the Support is Sexy podcast, I talk about how to let go of what's keeping you sick, stuck and dissatisfied. Subscribe to Support is Sexy podcast on iTunes or on Stitcher Radio! 205: It's Time to Stop Playing and Do That Thing
"The more important a project is to your evolution, the more resistance you will feel to it."~Author Steven Pressfield, "The War of Art." In this episode of the Support is Sexy podcast, I share how resistance (and fear) kept me from taking action and completing a project that has been a dream of mine since I was a child: Finishing a book proposal and ultimately becoming an author. But the pursuit of perfection and the ability to come up with plenty of reasons (i.e., excuses) gave me plenty of "outs" for not completing this job and fully going after this dream. That is until I finally stopped playing and decided to do that thing and do the work! Life is short, time is limited, you can no longer waste either of those gifts. Find out how to push through the resistance and make a commitment to take a step toward your destiny. It's waiting for you. As Wayne Dyer said, "Don't die with your music in you." 201: Using Art to Challenge Beauty "Standards" and Celebrate Bald Women with Photographer Alyscia Cunningham
Entrepreneur, author, filmmaker and photographer Alyscia Cunningham learned important lessons about building up a resilience to rejection from her tight-knit, Trinidadian family. As a five-year-old, she walked door-to-door with her grandfather as he sold water filters in their Baltimore neighborhood and, on occasion, encountered hostile customers. And her mom, who suffered a stroke after a brain aneurysm when Alyscia was just two years old, never the partial paralysis on her left side stop her from living a full life. In 2013, when Alyscia wanted to do a "big chop" to support women with cancer, she experienced unexpected rejection and negativity again, this time from women who told her she was crazy to cut her waist-length locks. As was family tradition, that rejection fueled her to move forward more determined than ever, not only to cut her own hair in support, but to celebrate the beauty of bald women in her new documentary and book, I Am More Than My Hair. In this episode of the Support is Sexy podcast, Alyscia talks about using your art as a tool of social commentary, finding support for your project through multiple resources and how to incorporate your family into your business as it continues to evolve. 192: Are You Taking the Leap or Are You Half Stepping?
Have you ever had a conversation with someone and they say something in passing that completely rocks your world? Something that – even though it's about a completely different topic -- resonates with you so deeply about something you're going through? Something that's like…whoa! That happened me to me during my interview this week with Jennfier Miotke, President of One on One Matchmaking here in Atlanta. Jennifer's interview, which is full of great dating advice and insight on running a matchmaking business, will air next week, so make sure you listen out for it. But what struck me during our conversation was her response to my question about why professional women sometimes struggle to date. And yes, if you've been listening to the show, you know I'm speaking about myself. Dating is on my to-do list, but honestly, it sits in the same spot and hasn't risen to the top of the priority list in a looooong time. Jennifer's response gave me a clue as to why that is. 189: Why That Change You're Going Through May Be Just What You Need
You know, sometimes I even surprise myself. I consider myself an introvert; although I know how to "turn it on" when needed. But "turning it on" requires work, and for an introvert like me it requires a lot of work and effort, which usually leaves me exhausted afterward. For this reason, I usually prefer me-time or intimate interactions with friends, where I can lay back and be myself. But that's not the part that surprises me. What surprises me is how I have become the princess (not quite the queen) of networking since I relocated to Atlanta -- connecting with new people nearly three or four times a week. I've never had trouble building relationships with people, but honestly, since I worked and lived in New York for so long, I had become comfortable knowing who I knew. I didn't quite subscribe to the "no-new-friends" motto; but I did feel like: "I'm good." The change changed all of that. A new environment, a new perspective, a need to push myself outside of my complacent zone and get out there to connect with new people, and, my priority, to create opportunities to continue to build my business. This isn't an episode about your need to network. (I actually find "networking" as we know it kind of slimy, but connections are crucial.) This is about you looking at a change that maybe you're avoiding, or one that your doubting, and thinking of it in a new way. Perhaps it is just what you need. Listen to find out why. 188: The One Thing: How to Get Focused on What Matters Most to Your Business
Do you suffer from "shiny apple syndrome?" If you're an entrepreneur with any ambition, it's likely you have. Instead of drilling down on what's working, we get caught up focusing on what's next. But what's next may not be what's needed. Ask yourself: What's the one thing that I should focus on to help me achieve extraordinary results? This is what I am learning while reading the book, The One Thing: The Surprisingly Simple Truth Behind Extraordinary Results by Gary Keller with Jay Papasan (Bard Press 2013). I've heard many entrepreneurs mention the book as one of their favorites – a go-to for advice – and I understand why. I have tons of passages outlined, as I share in this episode of the Support is Sexy podcast, the book is helping me to clear away some of the "shiny apples" in my entrepreneurial journey and focusing on what really matters, both to the business I want to build and the life I want to lead. 187: Find a Way: What a Power Outage During a Storm Taught Me About Commitment in Business
How far are you willing to go to keep your commitment? A commitment you've made to yourself and to other people? If you decided that it matters to you, will you do whatever it takes no matter the obstacle you face? I ask these questions as I sit in the pitch darkness – with the exception of the glow of my laptop – and record an episode of the Support is Sexy podcast during a power outage caused by a big storm here in Georgia. As a night owl who does much of my recording and work for my online business in the evening – you can understand how a power outage might present a problem. (Ack!) But you know what? I'm recording, I'm writing, I'm committed and I'm finding a way. I'm not sure exactly how this will work, but I am sure I will find a way. Whatever storm your facing, in whatever form it takes – whether that's power outage, person or other challenges – figure it out. In your life, in your business, you can find a way. After attending the University of Michigan and Wharton School of Business, the self-described "book worm," who skipped the fourth and the eighth grade, became an industrial engineer and was in the flow of her career in New York City.
