MICHIGAN STATE UNIVERSITY 13th February 2023 As we go to record this episode, it is 3 days since the tragic shooting at Michigan State University, which left 3 dead, and 5 fighting for their lives in hospital. Another tragic event that just happens to be even closer to home than usual for Katherine, as a former student of MSU. We await many more details as the case unfolds and will return in a fuller episode when we know more but already the case has some intriguing aspects that don’t fit what we usually see in a shooting at an educational facility. A TIDDLER OF A BONUS! S3 BONUS 12 Today’s bonus episode is another installment of the interviews Katherine recorded at the Firearm Injury Research Conference at the end of 2022. Katherine talked to Justin Hatchimonji and Danielle R. Hatchimonji about their research below: Trends in Youth Risk Behaviors and Firearm Injury in the US Over 20 Years: For the first time in the US, firearm injuries are the leading cause of death in children and adolescents. Little is known about the correlation between youth risk behaviors and firearm injury. We hypothesized that high rates of risky behavior in high school students are associated with higher rates of firearm injury in this population. Methods: We obtained data from the Youth Behavior Risk Survey (YRBS) of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and combined it with data from the CDC Web-based Injury Statistics Query and Reporting System (WISQARS) and CDC Wide-ranging Online Data for Epidemiologic Research (WONDER) databases. Population and demographic data were obtained from the American Community Survey (ACS), 2001-2020. We examined trends over time using a nonparametric test for trend and assessed correlation between behaviors and injuries using linear regression. Results: The percentage of high school aged youth carrying a weapon in the preceding 30 days ranged from 13.2% in 2019 to 18.5% in 2005, without a statistically significant trend over time (p=0.051). Those carrying a weapon to school peaked at 6.5% in 2005 and steadily down-trended to 2.8% in 2019 (p=0.004). Fighting and the presence of drugs on school grounds also decreased over time. Conversely, firearm deaths among adolescents 14-18 years old showed no significant change, ranging from 4.0 per 100k in 2013 to 8.3 per 100k in 2020. Non-fatal shootings (26.0-47.1/100k) and total shootings (31.3-53.7/100k) also showed no change. There was no correlation between risky behaviors and these outcomes. Conclusion/Significance: Self-reported firearm carriage, school fighting and the presence of drugs on high school grounds in the US have steadily down-trended over time. However, shooting injuries and deaths have not. While the former suggests progress, the latter remains concerning. Further work to investigate the relationship between behavior and injury is needed. S3E11 VTA SAN JOSE SHOOTING The San Jose, VTA shooting was a mass shooting that occurred on May 26, 2021, at the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) light rail yard in San Jose, California, United States. The shooter has been identified as a 57-year-old man who was an employee of the VTA. He opened fire at the VTA facilities around 6:30 am, killing 8 people and injuring several others before taking his own life. The circumstances surrounding the attack are harrowing, with people trapped with this 'grievance collector' killer in a conference room with one door in and one door out….. The Marjory Stoneman Douglas School Shooter sentencing On October 17 2022, a Florida judge sentenced the Parkland school shooter to life in prison without parole. It’s been nearly five years since the shooting that killed 17 people and injured 17 others on Valentine’s Day. The then, 19-year-old gunman had pleaded guilty leaving a Jury to decide whether he would face life in prison or the death penalty. The Marjory Stoneman Douglas school shooter was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, a judge ruled escaping the death penalty that was also on the table. However, it is doubtful that this will be the end of the story. There is the possibility of appeals, and even if those are unsuccessful, just how long will the victims' families and survivors be stuck in a cycle of reliving the worst day of their lives before they can get some legal closure? THE $965 MILLION VERDICT SANDY HOOK VERSUS ALEX JONES S3LQ4 The Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting occurred on December 14, 2012, in Newtown, Connecticut. Twenty-six people were killed, including twenty children between six and seven years old. The perpetrator also shot and killed his mother before driving to the school. In the wake of the tragedy, conspiracy theories began to circulate that the shooting was a hoax. One of the most prominent voices pushing these theories was radio host Alex Jones of Infowars. Jones claimed that the shooting was staged by the government in order to promote gun control. Now, nearly ten years later, Jones was sued for defamation by some of the Sandy Hook families and community and ordered to pay $965 million in compensatory damages..... We will be revisiting this case in depth later in the season with interviews from the parents of two of the victims; Alex Schachter, 14 and Alaina Petty also 14. And we will be, later in the season, looking at how things came to that point - where a 19 year old former student of the school jumped out of an Uber and subsequently ended the lives of 17 innocent students and teachers. TAFT HIGH SCHOOL - BULLYING Let’s talk about bullying - recent crime statistics in the U.S. National Crime Victimization Survey done by the American National Center for Education and the U.S. Bureau of Justice, indicated 22% of students said they had experienced bullying. And then layer on this statistic, although there's 22%, who said they experienced bullying, they believe only 20% of bullying is reported. PORT ARTHUR MASSACRE AUSTRALIA What would happen if we got rid of the guns? The million dollar question and to answer it this episode we are firing up the time machine and heading back to 1996 in Port Arthur on the Australian Island of Tasmania. After this shooting, the country's whole governing authorities pass the toughest gun laws in the world.
