OXFORD HIGH SCHOOL SHOOTING PART TWO Near Detroit, Michigan On November the 30th 2021, a 15 year old student came out of the bathroom and opened fire. Tragically four students lost their lives and seven more were left with injuries. In PART TWO we are again joined again by Frank DeAngelis and Meggan Preston as we look at the significance of the legal charges that make this case so unique. As regular listeners know, we usually take a look in depth at the killer’s background, looking at pinch points along where somebody could have seen something and said something. Understanding what the behaviors of concern are is key to preventing these shootings in the first place. However, as this particular case is so recent and still being tried in court the details of his background are light but we will circle back to it in a later episode. This is a watershed case, with not only domestic terrorism charges being laid against the shooter but involuntary manslaughter charges against the parents. Well, with heavy, heavy hearts, here we are again……On May 24, 2022, an 18-year-old opened fire at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, United States, killing nineteen students and two teachers, and wounding seventeen people. Earlier that day, he had shot and wounded his grandmother. He was shot and killed on the scene by a Border Patrol agent. Our hearts go out to the family of the victims, the survivors and the community now facing rebuilding and recovering from this horrific crime. Katherine and Sarah want to take this moment to remind everyone now is the time to be vigilant because we know, from research, that in the two weeks following a shooting, there will be THREE MORE MASS SHOOTINGS. This is the time to be extra vigilant, take notice of the people in your life. There will be signs…… Who is off hiding in their room? Who has notebooks they're filling out? It was just after 1am on a Sunday morning in November 2017, a 26 year old man climbed from his car in the parking lot of this tiny first Baptist church in Sutherland Springs, Texas. Almost immediately, he shoots at two people standing outside the church, the shooter enters through a side door and for 15 minutes, he fires indiscriminately walking up and down the aisle. In all, 48 people were either killed or wounded. This is the case where the reporting system failed and this individual was able to purchase several guns…….LEGALLY. On April 15th, 2021, a 19 year old man, carrying two semi-automatic rifles began shooting outside of a FedEx ground facility. He entered the business, continued to shoot people for about four minutes before turning the weapon on himself and killing himself. So in all he killed eight people and he shot another five, a couple of other people also suffered injuries. At first glance this looks like a case of workplace violence but as Katherine reveals the workplace could really have been any number of locations. Everybody knows the word Columbine but do you know the real story? In this episode we're really going to learn about two different stories about this infamous day. One is false and one that's really the true crime story. “ Their plan was an utter failure. So when other people try to emulate them, my answer to that would be... you want to be failures?” Katherine As soon as these two kids entered the school, they recognized that all their planning was a failure. Their whole plan is not going to be executed. There really is no way to copycat this. This week is the 2007 shooting on a college campus known as Virginia tech. The killing began at 7.30 in the morning on April 16th, 2007 in Blacksburg, Virginia. The shooter killed two people in a dormitory on the college campus. Then two and a half hours later, he chained the doors shut in a classroom building on the campus and he began shooting students and faculty. In all 32 people were killed and another 17 wounded, at least six other students were injured when they jumped from a second floor, classroom window in the end, the shooter committed suicide. This case is the most important case for why not to name a shooter. It is the ultimate case where the public and the media let the shooter, even in his death, control the narrative. The man who did this, it's totally his fault. But all of the people along the way let the guard rails down a little bit on the road and for whatever reason, at a given time, he drove the car off the road. Today, we're in a movie theater and we're about to watch a premiere of a Batman movie when a 24 year old begins shooting from beside the big screen. He has a shotgun, a rifle and a handgun with him and he kills 12 people, wounds 58 - one of the dead is a six year old girl. This week Katherine and Sarah discuss the shooting at a U.S. military building in the Washington Navy Yard. It was the site of a terrible shooting by an employee on September 16th, 2013. A 34 year old man drove into the building and went inside, armed with a sawed-off Remington shot. He stepped out of the men's bathroom on the fourth floor and he just simply walked down the hallway and started hunting for people to shoot. One of the many reasons that the shooter was able to roam freely hunting for over an hour was because the building had no address for first responders to find on a map. Today’s episode is a really sad tale and it's one that is often overlooked when we talk about these kinds of tragedies. It's really a horrible shooting situation that began a few minutes before four o'clock on July 18th 1984, when a 41 year old man who was carrying three different weapons, entered a McDonald's restaurant in the San Ysidro district of San Diego, California. During the 77 minute rampage, he killed 21 people and he injured another 19 before the police sharp shooter managed to take him out.
