Ep 43Parent Alert! Giannis Delivers a Life Lesson for the Ages!

Giannis Antetokounmpo (say that 5 times fast!), the all star forward and one time MVP of the National Basketball Association's Milwaukee Bucks is currently experiencing painful playoff adversity in more ways than one. At publishing time of this episode (April 29, 2024) he is hobbled by a late season injury that has kept him out of the series with the Indiana Pacers which has also contributed to them facing first round elimination for the second consecutive year. Ugh! So let's rewind a bit...Back on April 26, 2023. The Eastern Conference #1 seeded Milwaukee Bucks had just been eliminated from the playoffs in the first round by the #8 seed, the Miami Heat. By most observers, this was an unexpectedly quick end to the Bucks' season. In this short episode of The Stop Parenting & Start Coaching Podcast we discuss NBA superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo's answer to the following question in a post game press conference following the disappointing defeat: "Do you view this season as a failure?"We are downright giddy of the widespread broadcast of this press conference question. We are likewise jazzed that it was asked of a well respected, well grounded, not to mention immensely talented, professional athlete such as Giannis. The question and answer provides a golden opportunity for you as a parent to really think about your own thinking relative to "failure" and "success." What is your definition of success? We believe this question and your answers can open the door of discovery as you intentionally engage in meaningful discussions with your spouse and teens concerning your definitions of "failure" and "success." Enjoy!----Watch the Giannis Antetokounmpo press conference here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uZwlAzr44ys----Watch the Inside in the NBA crew explore the Giannis press conference here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qI6vsaZZDJc-Nate & SteveP.S. Ep 40PARENT: "What's This Gonna Cost Me?"

We're weighing costs and benefits and outcomes today on The Stop Parenting & Start Coaching Podcast! Let's address some very important questions that you as parents need to ask yourselves as you make decisions about support, incentives, and rewards with the intent of raising your teen's performance and creating a great life experience for them. And, as you decide on what type of support you provide, what are the ramifications besides the obvious (and not so obvious) price tags?! Here are a few teaser questions to ponder: --Do I pay or reward for performance such as stats, ratings, scores, or rankings? --Do I incentivize outcomes?--Have I considered the ramifications for everyone involved (team/group, teammates/peers, coaches/leaders)?--How do I really know or learn what to reinforce or incentivize? And...there's more! We'll also dive into the following critical concepts:1) The reality that teens are very susceptible to feeling as if they are a burden on their very supportive parents.2) How can you create transformation rather than going through the motions of making mere transactions in your parent/teen athlete--performer relationship. 3) Have I sufficiently pondered whether my actions and support are "costs" or "investments?" What do I truly value and how does that translate to my support of my teen athlete/performer?Let's goooooooooooo moms and dads--let's up your game!-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Hey there SUPERSTAR Parents! Happy April 1st everyone!Today we explore a very intriguing question from one of our teen listeners (ha-this isn't just for parents!) who competes as a high school wrestler:Should I or shouldn't I "bracket watch?" What a great question! And what a timely question too as most of the world (even if you don't like basketball) is aware of the fun and frenzied "bracket watching" that goes on during the winding up of the college basketball season as several dozen teams engage single elimination tourney bracket craziness known as March Madness (even though it always ends in early April--so there's that!). Ep 36Stops Signs, "The Ladder" & "I Don't Know"

In today's this episode of The Stop Parenting & Start Coaching Podcast we are going to talk stop signs, ladders and the common "I Don't Know" answer. We dive in first by chatting about those red, octagon-shaped street signs and "The Ladder of Learning!" What is The Ladder of Learning? You're going to find out (or remember it) in this episode. We all climb it throughout our life and it's important that we understand where our teen athletes and performers are at on The Ladder. Understanding the 4 related "rungs" of competence, incompetence and consciousness is way more important than that physical ladder hanging in your garage. Ep 31What if My Coach DOESN'T Hate Me?

Last week in Episode #30 of The Stop Parenting & Start Coaching Podcast we explored the "My Coach Hates Me" situation and in today's episode (#31) we stick our hands in the same hornet's nest, but now from a coach's perspective. In fact, speaking on "perspective", our goal is to encourage you as a Most Valuable Parent to entertain the idea of creating a perspective shift in this difficult situation. By doing so, you position yourself to help your teen to learn the best way(s) to turn this not very fun situation into a positive experience. We all have blind spots (performers/parents/coaches) and becoming aware of those blind spots and then viewing things in a fresh, different, (and calm) manner can pay big dividends now and in the long term. Let's all experience a grand perspective shift! Thanks for being here--we hope you gain something valuable from this time we spend together!! Ep 28Parents--What if You Don't Feel Like "Trusting the Process?"

In the high performance coaching pool that we swim in, the phrase "trust the process" is mentioned every 3.8 seconds (ok, maybe an exaggeration there!). But...what if we get stuck on or in our feelings and "trusting the process" is not very attractive in the moment? Motivation is easy uh well, when it's easy! :) But what about when it's not?In today's episode of The Stop Parenting & Start Coaching Podcast we continue our BHAG (big, hairy audacious goal--thank you Jim Collins), resolutions, and generally "go make things happen" 2024 conversation that we began in Episode 26 ("You Don't Need No Stinkin' Resolutions!"). We hit on the balanced goal approach, which is our way of describing the overall strategy of "trusting the process," as we strive to achieve our short and long term goals. Here are just a few of the gold nuggets you'll find here today:--What is the real battle in taking the balanced goal approach?--Why should we model this behavior as a parent (rather than just telling them)?--Why is discipline more important than motivation and how to win the battles within the moment?--How do we accelerate progress?--The Nick Booth jump hook story!--What are the common pitfalls we face when trying to trust the process?--What is the "sweet spot" when trying to stretch yourself in attacking a goal?!--And to finish up, a Parental Unit challenge is issued (besides the ongoing challenge for you to share The Stop Parenting & Start Coaching Podcast with 3 of your friends--if you love it, of course, and if you are benefitting from it! The challenge: What can you do TODAY to upgrade your relationship with your teen athlete or performer?Trust the Process and make it happen moment by moment!-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Hey there Very Important Parents! Ep 24The TRANSFORMING Stress Series: Parents, You Lead the Way!

Welcome to the Transforming Stress Series on The Stop Parenting & Start Coaching Podcast! In the first of three empowering episodes, we delve into the crucial topic of stress transformation. You, the Very Important Parent, play a crucial role in modeling leading the way for your teen athlete or performer. Your teen is watching you and how you deal with the big "S" word. Stress. YIKES! And, we know it's tough. Often it is harder for you as a parent to watch your teen in a pressure cooker situation than it is for them to perform! You know what we're talking about here!A common phrase in the personal development/mental health/sport psychology worlds is "stress management." We push back against that phrase in this episode. We confidently and resolutely view stress as something that cannot be eliminated. We view ever present stress as a wonderful opportunity for transformation rather than management! We hope you enjoy the stories from Steve as young athlete and Nate as a sports dad as we illustrate what it means to transform stress into something amazing and helpful.Speaking of that, how do you change or transform stress into a positive force for good? How do we model appropriate stress transformation for our teens? Here is a great place to start. Answer this gem from Nate: What do you really want for you teen out of their performance experiences? Your honest answer will be insightful and will likely help you shape your behavior in a way that will help your teen to transform stress in effective ways. You got this moms and dads! Thanks for listening! We hope to have your ears and attention in the next episode as well where we continue our discussion of transforming stress with an emphasis on the mighty role of "perspective."If you love The Stop Parenting & Start Coaching Podcast, please follow us and share with two or three of your Parental Unit tribe! We'd also love a 5 star review on Apple or Spotify--it will help us grow and improve! And if you're into the whole socials thing you can follow us at createtransformbecome on Instagram and Facebook. Ep 23Parents--So What's Next?!

Thanks for tuning in to this episode of The Stop Parenting & Start Coaching Podcast. When a "season" or career ends we often wonder: "so, what's next?"We are so thankful to one of our listeners for asking us to address this common and challenging situation that most if not all parents of athletes and performers face: the inevitable end of your son or daughter's high school career. As both coaches and as fathers, we have had a front row seat for this experience with our own teens and hundreds of players. It is not an easy situation to deal with and just one of many reasons why "parenting is the hardest job and there's not a close second" (our favorite parenting line of all time)!Let's tackle this situation together moms and dads! How do we approach this emotionally challenging time where we are watching something so amazing coming to an end? How do we help our teen prepare for this ending? So many good questions to consider--here are some more to ponder:--As parents, what are the different components of this situation that should be addressed?--If my teen may or will receive the opportunity to play or perform beyond high school, how do we as parents discuss or prepare for such?--What does "success" look like for my teen?--What does my teen want?--Is this about me or my teen?--How do I as a parent handle "the end?"When answering the many questions that fall into the "So, What's Next?" category, the critical fundamentals of connection and communication are KEYS to your success, moms and dads! Btw, we absolutely love how using The QOC Tool would be helpful in this situation. Listen to Episodes 14 & 15 for the deets!Very Important Parents--we hope you have gained some helpful insights! We hope you are now poised to discuss those insights with your spouse or partner and most importantly, with your teen athlete or performer! If you love this episode, please share it with a friend--thanks! And please remember, we're cheering you on moms and dads--you're doing better than you think! - Nate & Steve

Ep 22Parents--Let's Take a Trip to the "E.R.!"

Relax parents, it's not a medical emergency, it's an Emotional Regulation Expedition! That's right, on today's episode of The Stop Parenting & Start Coaching Podcast we're taking a trip to the 'E.R.' !As a parent of a teen athlete or performer you know emotions are intertwined into your parent/teen world. Emotions show up in your thoughts, conversations, and for sure in your teen's competitions and performances. We cannot and should not necessarily avoid being emotional, but we can and should learn how to appropriately regulate our emotions to set a great example for our teens. You got this mom, you can do this dad!Emotional regulation is a skill, so we are going to ask some tough questions that can help you, as the MVP adults in the room, to develop this important parenting skill. When you regulate your emotions, your superstar teens learn how to regulate theirs. Wow, is this valuable! Wow, will this improve your parent/teen relationship! When this happens, your teen is freed up to perform their best! Win-win!Here are a few of the questions we'll dive into in this episode:-Why should we NOT suppress emotion?-Why we should we embrace rather than ignore emotions?-As a parent what is the best way to teach E.R. to my teen athlete or performer?-As a parent, where do I start in developing this skill?-What is the "next level" (Nate's words) or "oblique" approach to working together with our teens to improve our E.R.? (Note: Steve knows what "oblique" means (and we know you do as well) but his sarcasm fools Nate, so you're gonna get the definition anyway! 😊-Which emotions should we encourage?Well, we're feeling a little emotional! We are so grateful to you for listening in to The Stop Parenting & Stop Parenting Podcast! Without you, there is no show. Thanks for following us on Instagram at @createtransformbecome and on Facebook (Create Transform Become).
