You may not know his name, but if you’re a Kenner Star Wars fan or collector, you certainly know his work. Jawa, Death Squad Commander, Leia Hoth, 2-1B, the B-Wing Pilot, Yak Face - these are some of the original figures sculpted by the legendary Bill Lemon. While sculpting in wax was the preferred method for Kenner designers, Bill carved figures from acetate. It took a true master of his craft to be able to do so, and in addition to being admired by his fellow sculptors for his work, his creations are some of the most coveted pieces to Star Wars collectors around the world. When it comes to collecting vintage Star Wars action figures, the original Kenner wax sculpts are some of the rarest, most desirable and most valuable pieces coveted by collectors. Some of these iconic sculpts likely would fetch more than a million dollars each if they were ever offered up for sale to the public. A wax sculpt is generally the first three-dimensional representation of an action figure, but it is the model responsible for every Chewbacca, every Boba Fett and every other figure in the Star Wars toy universe . And each one sculpted in the 1970s and 1980s was created by a true artist. If you were going to pitch an idea for a Star Wars figure, what would it be and where would you start? For the designers at Kenner in the 1970s and 1980s, and at Hasbro in the 1990s and 2000s, the presentation board was the earliest example of pitching an idea and represented what that idea could become. And while many presentation boards are long gone, some have made their way into the hands of vintage and modern Star Wars collectors. And while few have realized the importance of these boards, there is a growing interest in obtaining what may be the earliest representation of a figure we love, or of an idea that was never produced. Join host David Quinn as he examines some of the surviving Kenner presentation boards that span almost a decade of production during the original trilogy, The Power of the Force and the 1985-86 Line Extension Proposal, followed by a discussion about Hasbro's quest to create a new era of Star Wars toys with longtime modern prototype collector and dear friend, Anthony Pagano. During the conversation, Anthony shares his insight into Hasbro's pitch to obtain the master rights to producing Star Wars toys from Lucasfilm; the contents of that pitch and how it led to the Power of the Force 2 line; the figures that were created during those five years of production, and the ones that were never produced; how Hasbro worked in tandem with Lucasfilm for the Episode 1 toy line during the entire production of the film; the presentation boards for The Power of the Jedi Tour in 2001; and finally, why presentation boards suddenly disappeared shortly after the turn of the century. Collecting Prototypes is a new series that will explore more than 40 years of modern and vintage Star Wars preproduction pieces from companies like Kenner and Hasbro. In August, the Georgia Alliance of Star Wars Collectors (GASWC) hosted a virtual collectors convention filled with interviews and panels, game shows and room sales. The Star Wars collecting community has changed in these past four months. An entirely new marketplace now caters to both the established and newer collectors unlike any before it, all thanks to a sleepy little Facebook group page that went unnoticed until the quarantine commenced. This is the story of that group, and how it found its place in Star Wars collecting history. What was it like to be on the set and in the world of Return of the Jedi? Sean Crawford and Tim Dry began their careers as mimes and musicians, playing with some of the most iconic bands during the UK's New Romantics club scene. Their day job consisted of filming scenes in Jabba's Palace and in space with Admiral Ackbar in one of the most famous movies of all time. Sean portrayed the infamous Yak Face, most notable for being the final figure produced by Kenner for the original vintage Star Wars trilogy toy line. Tim was the monstrous J'Quille, known during production as "Tooth Face." And they both played Mon Calamari officers later in the film. But their story is an incredible one, anchored by a friendship that has spanned the length of the Star Wars franchise itself. And now they are stewards of the Star Wars legacy, as they regularly appear at conventions to sign autographs and pose for photos with fans, and to share the stories of their time in a galaxy, far, far away.
