87. Ewan’s Return: How The Idea For An Obi-Wan Kenobi Film Transformed Into A Disney+ Miniseries!
“Will you return to play Obi-Wan again?” That was the question that plagued Ewan McGregor for years, as Lucasfilm began to release Star Wars films in the Disney era. Fans clamored to see McGregor don the Jedi Robes again, and to portray the beloved character from George Lucas’ prequel trilogy. Behind the scenes, Lucasfilm had been working on a standalone Kenobi film, similar to 2016’s Rogue One and 2018’s SOLO. And over time, that idea for a film morphed into an offering for the small screen: the recently released Obi-Wan Kenobi series, on the Disney+ streaming service. This is the fascinating story behind that transition. Join host David Quinn as he explores some of the earliest rumors and rumblings, the exciting film announcement in 2017, and the reason behind the shift to a miniseries in 2019, capped off by the return of the Jedi Master, seventeen years later after Episode III: Revenge of the Sith. 85. Exploring The Stories Behind The Kenner And Hasbro Toys: The Vintage Collection Archive Book!
In The Vintage Collection Archive, authors Rich Alot, D. Martin Myatt, and former Hasbro VP Derryl DePriest crafted the definitive guide for the line: carefully curated and setting a new standard for a Star Wars collector resource. The writing is superb, the commentary by the Hasbro team is insightful, and the images are truly striking. But it’s greatest secret? The behind-the-scenes information that spills from every one of the more than 350 gorgeous pages. Which figure did George Lucas and Dave Filoni play a part in designing? Which Kenner mistakes were purposefully included in the updated Hasbro cardback art? And what did Hasbro do to continue the line, after the company exceeded its tooling budget during the first year? In covering Hasbro’s The Vintage Collection action figure line, the book delves into the stories behind the figures, playsets, and vehicles, but it also shines a light on the Kenner toys on which much of the iconic packaging, art and designs are based. Join host David Quinn as he explores The Vintage Collection Archive Edition and shares some fascinating facts about the history of The Vintage Collection, the modern lines and the Kenner figures that started it all. 80. The Story Of The Longtime Star Wars Collector Who Sold His Entire Collection At Hake’s Auction!
Did you ever wonder where the Star Wars collectibles in a Hake’s auction come from? In the latest auction, one-third of the vintage Star Wars items - an amazing assortment of carded action figures - came from one collector, curated over the span of 25 years. From seeing an X-Wing in a shop in New York City, leading to a wild hunt for the highest quality carded figure examples available, to the heartbreak of dropping and destroying a $20,000 action figure and making a very tough decision - our collector’s story is an amazing one. And at the end of his journey, he received a shocking surprise as the Hake’s auction came to a close. This is one story you do not want to miss. Join host David Quinn and collector/author Matt George for final episode in the Hake’s auction series, with the collector who sold his entire Star Wars collection at Hake’s Auction 234. 79. Clear Bubbles Reign: The Top Sales And Trends Of The Latest Hake’s Star Wars Auction! (Part 2)
The insanity continues. The “Clear” winners of the second half of the auction? Clear bubble carded figures from Return of the Jedi brought in almost $50,000 in sales. And on average, they shockingly sold for an incredible 40% over the high end of their estimates. Hake’s auction 234 brought in $72,000 in revenge proofs, $60,000 in Power of the Force figures, and a total of $1.2 million dollars in sales of Star Wars items. Do we really live in a collecting world in which a B-Wing Pilot and a Prune Face figure each sold for $1,000? How much did a clear bubble POTF Wicket W. Warrick sell for? Which Revenge proof card sold for $13,000 - the same price as a Charcoal Robes POTF Anakin Skywalker prototype? And will Power of the Force figures continue to skyrocket? Join host David Quinn and collector/author Matt George for the second and final part of a conversation about these items and more, as they explore the stunning prices and unearth the collecting trends from Hake’s Auction 234. And thanks to Matt’s exhaustive data analysis, you’ll understand how truly surprising these results are, as he shares valuable insight and information only found on this podcast! Which carded figures performed the best? Did prototypes underperform? What were the top ten highest-selling pieces? Which items were steals and went under the radar during the auction? And would you believe that Empire Strikes Back items fared the best in this shocking auction? Figures like Luke Bespin and a Power Droid sold in the $5,000 range, a Bossk pulled in $4,000, and even a forgotten figure like Dengar commanded $3,500! 73. Are Carded ESB Figures The Next Hottest Collectibles? Exploring The Hake’s Auction! (Part 3)
A $4,000 carded Bespin Luke? If you’re a collector, you know how desirable the collectibles from the first Star Wars film have become over the past two years. But The Empire Strikes Back is the rare sequel that is just as beloved and just as impactful as the first film, if not more so. And while ESB carded figures have taken a back seat to the 12-back and 20-back Star Wars figures, interest is rising steadily in the figures offered during the era of Empire. Luke Bespin, Leia Bespin, Lando Calrissian, Yoda, Han Hoth, IG-88, Snowtrooper - these are some of the iconic characters introduced in the Kenner line in 1980. And they are becoming some of the most sought after figures. The latest Hake’s auction has compiled a collection of some of the most beautiful examples of these Empire Strikes Back figures. We’ve seen the increases in values for the 12-back figures of 1978. Are the 1980s ESB figures next? Join host David Quinn and collector/author Matt George for a conversation about these items and more, as they explore the latest Hake’s catalog. 69. The History of Hasbro’s HasLab: What The Sail Barge Has Meant To Collectors!
In 2018, fans successfully funded the first HasLab Star Wars toy campaign, purchasing more than 8,800 $500 Sail Barges from The Vintage Collection line. To vintage and modern collectors alike, Jabba’s Sail Barge was a dream piece, one first seen in 1983’s Return of the Jedi. But was it worth the nearly 40-year wait? Join host David Quinn for the “rest of the story” in the second episode, in which the collectors who purchased the mighty Sail Barge share the fascinating, funny and touching stories about their experiences with the barge, and what this special and historic toy means to them. 68. The History Of Hasbro’s HasLab: Jabba’s Crowdfunded Sail Barge Soars!
In 2018, Hasbro announced a new platform that would expand the galaxy of Star Wars toys like never before. Through HasLab, figures, vehicles and playsets that were considered too costly to produce or too large to sell at retail became possibilities through Hasbro’s crowdfunded-based campaigns. HasLab would present its offering, and Star Wars fans would ultimately decide if it would be produced. The massive Khetanna, Jabba’s Sail Barge from Return of the Jedi, was the first-ever HasLab project. It would be the largest Star Wars toy made by Hasbro for the 3.75” line, and the most expensive one for consumers as well. Would HasLab be successful? And would fans choose to “Back the Barge?” Join host David Quinn for a look at the first chapter of the in-depth series, The History of HasLab. Explore the story of how the beloved Vintage Collection was revived, why Hasbro developed the Khetanna campaign, and what it took to make the barge a toy for fans and collectors. And take a tour through Jabba’s Sail Barge, as you shrink down to the size of an action figure. It’s unlike anything you’ve experienced with Star Wars toys! (*Try it in headphones!) 58. Collecting Prototypes: An Introduction to Hardcopies
When it comes to Star Wars prototypes, hardcopies are some of the rarest surviving pieces. Hardcopies play a number of a crucial roles in the production and promotion of an action figure. Kenner hardcopies rarely appear for sale, and when they do, they command prices in the $20,000-$80,000 range, and possibly higher. Today, Hasbro still uses hardcopies in producing modern figures for the Black Series and The Vintage Collection lines. But finding one is an immense challenge. So what is a hardcopy, and why is it so important to the history of Star Wars action figures? Join host David Quinn for a look at how a hardcopy is made, its function in the Kenner and Hasbro toy production process, how it differs from a production figure, and why fakes have entered the market over the years. The hardcopy is truly one of the rarest and most under appreciated items in the world of Star Wars collectibles. The Collecting Prototypes series explores more than 40 years of modern and vintage Star Wars preproduction pieces from companies like Kenner and Hasbro, and the production process of a Star Wars toy as it goes from concept to retail. To learn more about vintage hardcopies, please visit The Star Wars Collectors Archive: http://theswca.com/ And order the fantastic book “Gus and Duncan’s Guide to Star Wars Prototypes” for a photo-based look at Kenner hardcopies and other preproduction pieces: http://theswca.com/completists/ If you enjoy Star Wars: Prototypes and Production, please: 1. 52. The Georgia Summer Social: Friends, Fellow Collectors And Former Kenner Employees Unite!
During a recent July weekend, the Georgia Alliance of Star Wars Collectors hosted its annual Summer Social event. More than 80 members from the club came from all over the United States to attend. They took part in a weekend of meals with collectors, conversations with former Kenner and Hasbro employees, room sales and trips with friends around the Atlanta region. Longtime vintage Star Wars collector and "Swag King" Narayan S. Naik hosted Saturday’s meetup at his home, where attendees were treated to an afternoon of games and competitions, a top-shelf food truck lunch, and a tour of his collection, appropriately titled “Mos Atlanta.” For many, it was a much needed return to the in-person events, especially after a long year without them. Join host David Quinn for a conversation with Narayan, as he recounts what it was like to prepare and host part of the Georgia meetup, and the blessings that come from a collectors weekend. In Narayan’s own words: “Star Wars collectors are a rare breed . They’re like the childhood friends who you never knew you had. The ones who shared the same experiences and who can complete the sentences you start with any conversation. The friends who you may only have known for a few years but feel like you know for a lifetime. As soon as the weekend started, it felt like I was with the people who are my close friends and family again. The events themselves didn’t matter, as along as it was with the people who I had missed seeing for so long. It felt like coming HOME… “ If you’d like to join this creative and exciting club, check out the Georgia Alliance of Star Wars Collectors group page on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/400606696989466 And if you enjoy Star Wars: Prototypes and Production, please: 1. 47. How the 1990s Created the Vintage Star Wars Collector, Part 1!
If the 1970s and 1980s gave us Star Wars, the events of the 1990s established the hobby and birthed the vintage collector. Six years after George Lucas called for a break from exploring the Star Wars universe, Lucasfilm permitted the property to be licensed again. The 1991 novel Heir to the Empire kicked off a new era of Star Wars stories and events and reignited the fandom. The decade was packed with new novels, exciting video games, and groundbreaking comic books. The first book on collecting Star Wars action figures and licensed products was released, sending collectors on a hunt for production and preproduction items that still continues to this day. And Star Wars fans were granted an all new line of action figures, a convention devoted solely to Lucas’ creation, and by the end of the decade, the beginning of a prequel film trilogy. Join host David Quinn for an exploration of the early part of the decade and what it was like to create new Star Wars content, as well as what it was like to be a consumer and a collector during that time.
