“Will you return to play Obi-Wan again?” That was the question that plagued Ewan McGregor for years, as Lucasfilm began to release Star Wars films in the Disney era. Fans clamored to see McGregor don the Jedi Robes again, and to portray the beloved character from George Lucas’ prequel trilogy. Behind the scenes, Lucasfilm had been working on a standalone Kenobi film, similar to 2016’s Rogue One and 2018’s SOLO. And over time, that idea for a film morphed into an offering for the small screen: the recently released Obi-Wan Kenobi series, on the Disney+ streaming service. Ten years ago, a chance encounter between two vintage Star Wars collectors became the spark that ignited one of the greatest regional clubs in the galaxy: The Empire State Star Wars Collectors Club. When it comes to Star Wars prototypes, hardcopies are some of the rarest surviving pieces. Hardcopies play a number of a crucial roles in the production and promotion of an action figure. Kenner hardcopies rarely appear for sale, and when they do, they command prices in the $20,000-$80,000 range, and possibly higher. Today, Hasbro still uses hardcopies in producing modern figures for the Black Series and The Vintage Collection lines. But finding one is an immense challenge. Is there anything more exciting than an amazing toy find? During a recent July weekend, the Georgia Alliance of Star Wars Collectors hosted its annual Summer Social event. More than 80 members from the club came from all over the United States to attend. They took part in a weekend of meals with collectors, conversations with former Kenner and Hasbro employees, room sales and trips with friends around the Atlanta region. Longtime vintage Star Wars collector and "Swag King" Narayan S. Naik hosted Saturday’s meetup at his home, where attendees were treated to an afternoon of games and competitions, a top-shelf food truck lunch, and a tour of his collection, appropriately titled “Mos Atlanta.” For many, it was a much needed return to the in-person events, especially after a long year without them. If the 1970s and 1980s gave us Star Wars, the events of the 1990s established the hobby and birthed the vintage collector. Six years after George Lucas called for a break from exploring the Star Wars universe, Lucasfilm permitted the property to be licensed again. The 1991 novel Heir to the Empire kicked off a new era of Star Wars stories and events and reignited the fandom. The decade was packed with new novels, exciting video games, and groundbreaking comic books. The first book on collecting Star Wars action figures and licensed products was released, sending collectors on a hunt for production and preproduction items that still continues to this day. And Star Wars fans were granted an all new line of action figures, a convention devoted solely to Lucas’ creation, and by the end of the decade, the beginning of a prequel film trilogy.
