Star Wars: Prototypes and Production

How does a Star Wars meetup become a holiday tradition? Every year, Pennsylvanian collector Mike De Stefano hosts Sithmas, a weekend event that celebrates Star Wars and the holidays. The weekend kicks off with a Friday night meal, followed by Saturday’s main event. The day is packed with festivities - from a White Wampa gift exchange to a special dinner together, to tours of Mike’s three incredible Star Wars collection rooms. This year, approximately 80 Star Wars collectors from five regional clubs will travel to the Lancaster area to celebrate Sithmas with Mike at his home. Join host David Quinn for a conversation with Mike, as Mike discusses how Sithmas began, how it evolved, and why it has become a must-attend event on the Star Wars collector calendar each December! After 30 years of collecting, why would someone walk away from the hobby they loved? The answer may surprise you. On August 11, longtime collector Tad Moore announced he had decided to stop collecting comics and Star Wars memorabilia. He had consigned his collection to Hake’s Auctions, an auction house that would integrate his 500+ carded vintage Star Wars figures, as well as legendary prototypes and preproduction pieces, comics and original art, into a series of future catalog auctions. But the burning question was a simple one: why? Join host David Quinn for a fascinating conversation with Tad, as Tad shares his collecting story, his connection to the Star Wars community, and what propelled him to part with everything he had acquired over the past 30 years. This is a can’t-miss collectors’ chat. And this is Star Wars: Prototypes and Production! The Clone Wars premiered 15 years ago this week. After the film’s release on August 15, 2008, a television series soon followed. Together, they introduced the world to Ahsoka Tano and showcased the further adventures of Anakin Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi and the Jedi of the prequel era. And over the past 15 years, The Clone Wars has become a generation-defining Star Wars series and has served as the foundation for many of the current Lucasfilm stories, including Dave Filoni’s new Ahsoka show. Join host David Quinn for a celebration of The Clone Wars film, series and memorabilia, through the memories and reflections of our fellow Star Wars fans and collectors. Featuring contributions from: FJ DeRobertis, Erik Janniche, Christopher James Leddy, Joe O’Neill, Sam Sams, David Tree, Daniel Uthman and David Kevin White. This is a celebration of Snips and Skyguy. I couldn’t believe it. After a string of toy shows with very little worthwhile Star Wars memorabilia, I had stumbled upon one of my best finds in years. And it happened at the Toys for the Ages Expo in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. The Toys for the Ages Expo is one of the premier vintage toy shows on the east coast. The brainchild of Andy Cook, the show focuses on the beloved lines from the 1970s, 80s and 90s, but it covers all of the collectibles from the past 50 years. And for Star Wars fans, it was a toy paradise. There were more Kenner and Hasbro gems at this show than at any in recent memory. Join host David Quinn for part one of a look at the weekend of the Toys for the Ages Expo. Travel out to the show, experience what Friday’s setup is like for vendors, join the crew for a group dinner, and find out what made Saturday’s show so memorable and so very special for collectors! This is an unforgettable toy trip weekend. And this is Star Wars: Prototypes and Production! Featuring collectors Andy Cook, Peter LeRose, Kevin Mann, Bob Mastrella, Matthew Mitchell, and Mark Ryan. Hasbro could not afford to deliver a third HasLab failure. For this year’s Star Wars project, the toy company premiered the Vintage Collection Ghost in July, kicking off a six-week campaign for fans to back the beloved Rebels ship and to bring home the members of the Spectre squadron. But did Hasbro learn from its mistakes? Would the company prove to its fanbase that it understood what Star Wars collectors desired? Would Hasbro shape a campaign worthy of the HasLab name, one that would connect with Star Wars fans? Join host David Quinn for a look at the importance of the relationship between a toy company and its consumers, and how the lessons learned from previous projects would lead to the success of the HasLab Ghost. Ahead of the anticipated HasLab launch, what do you know about the Ghost? The ship was the home to the best Star Wars ensemble since the original trilogy team of 1977. With its memorable Spectre squad, the Ghost became a key instrument in defeating the Empire. The ship hosted some of the most notable and iconic passengers - from the original trilogy’s Princess Leia and Lando Calrissian, to the Clone Wars’ Rex and Ahsoka, the Ghost became the hub for the beginning of the Rebellion, and the bridge between the Star Wars storytelling eras. Join host David Quinn for a look at this fascinating ship and the incredible team that called it home. Learn why it would be the perfect vessel for a Vintage Collection HasLab project, and why the Star Wars: Rebels animated series is considered essential viewing among a growing list of Star Wars fans. You may have attended conventions or toy shows…but have you ever hiked with your fellow Star Wars fans and collectors? On a Sunday at the end of May, a group of collectors traveled to the Hudson Valley area in upstate New York, to hike the Mt. Beacon trail. Join host David Quinn for a trip back to Fishkill, New York, for a day with members from the Empire State Star Wars Collectors Club. Explore the remnants of a 1940s hotel and casino perched on the mountain’s edge, along with a climb up a creaky nine-story fire tower, the highest point in the Hudson Valley! At its core, this episode highlights the types of meetups collectors and clubs hold - ones outside of the the conventions and toy shows that many of us already attend. And a hike like this helps to build bonds and develop friendships that will continue to grow for years to come. This is a bit of the magic our Star Wars community possesses. The campaign was sinking quickly. Hampered by lackluster stretch goal offerings, a frustrated fanbase, and a campaign that surprisingly had lost hundreds of backers along the way, the Black Series Rancor was in danger of becoming the first Star Wars HasLab failure. Would an action figure “Hail Mary,” in the form of Malakili the Rancor Keeper, reverse the backer bleed and help the Rancor cross the finish line into production? Or was the 2021 project simply doomed from the start? Join host David Quinn for part two of the most in-depth look at the crowdfunded campaign to bring the Rancor to life for fans across the globe. “Xenia was INSANE…changed my perspective on the toy market.” That text message from a fellow collector was the impetus for this episode. What made another longtime collector boldly claim: "The best toy show I've ever attended. Period." What were some of the rare prototypes and production pieces our fellow Star Wars collectors purchased at Xenia? And what was the show really like? Did you know that Kenner DESTROYED 500,000 Early Bird Certificates? As iconic as the Certificate is to Star Wars collectors today, it was a controversial offering in the fall of 1977, and many viewed it as a scam. Throughout the past year, and for the previous two decades, collector Ron Salvatore has covered fascinating topics like this in his informative and his invaluable articles for The Star Wars Collectors Archive. Join host David Quinn for part three of a conversation with Ron, as Ron gives insight into how the Early Bird Certificate was received by retailers and consumers, the impact of collector meetups, and the Star Wars topics he intends to write about in the new year. In 1977, while Star Wars mania swept the nation, one iconic life-sized accessory was missing from toy shelves: the lightsaber. And as Kenner toiled away at crafting a Lucasfilm-approved version of the novel blade, some entrepreneurial creators eschewed copyright laws and produced their own unlicensed lightsabers to sell to the public. Throughout the past year, and for the previous two decades, collector Ron Salvatore has covered fascinating topics like this in his informative and his invaluable articles for The Star Wars Collectors Archive. Join host David Quinn for part two of a conversation with Ron, as Ron pieces together the history of the unlicensed lightsabers, and shares his approach to writing and researching Star Wars topics for the benefit of collectors around the world. Did a hobbyist create the very first Star Wars figures, many months before Kenner’s iconic toys appeared at retail? Was one of the rarest licensed Kenner Star Wars items a partnership with…Cincinnati students? And what is the legacy of a unique collector who introduced a new way to collect action figures? These are some of the topics writer and collector Ron Salvatore addressed this year and in his articles for the website The Star Wars Collectors Archive. In addition to owning one of the most incredible collections in the galaxy, Ron has written about Star Wars collecting for more than two decades. Join host David Quinn for a part one of a fascinating conversation with Ron, as Ron discusses his journey covering vintage Star Wars collectibles, the amazing stories he unearthed, and his process in creating these informative and invaluable articles. For Star Wars fans, some of the most iconic photos in the galaxy were printed as posters. Whether they were theatrical posters advertising an upcoming film at your local metroplex, commercial ones adorning your bedroom walls, or promotional prints you received at events like Star Wars Celebration, these images have come to represent the excitement of the film trilogies and the latest small-screen series. And over the decades, poster collecting has become a vibrant and thriving part of our hobby, as collectors seek out these rare and meaningful works of art and advertising. Join host David Quinn for a conversation with Danny Katzel and Tony van Dam, as they provide an overview of poster collecting over the decades, the stories behind the designs, and why posters resonate with so many collectors of all eras! Ten years ago, the Star Wars universe changed forever. On October 30, 2012, George Lucas, the master storyteller who spoke the Jedi and lightsabers into existence, sold his company to Bob Iger and Disney for $4 billion. And since then, Star Wars has expanded wildly. The sequel trilogy concluded the onscreen Skywalker Saga. The world of Batuu emerged at the Disney theme parks. And beloved characters like the Mandalorian and Grogu graced our television screens. But how did the deal between Lucasfilm and Disney happen? Join host David Quinn for a look at the deal to bring Star Wars to Disney: why Lucas decided to part with the company he spent his life creating, why Disney wanted to add it to its impressive collection of intellectual properties, and why Episode Seven was created without its original master. This is the story behind the announcement that changed everything! The Andor series is unlike any Star Wars show in the galaxy. But is that a good thing? Join host David Quinn as he shares his perspective on the series: where a story’s “slow burn” works, how the show develops and grows its characters to create meaningful connections with fans, and why Andor may be following in Rogue One’s footsteps by quietly building a loyal and ardent following over time. **NOTE: The episode references moments from the first seven episodes of Andor, as well as events that occur in Rogue One, Obi-Wan Kenobi, The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett.
