In this week’s [UNCENSORED] podcast by GoWild, we wrapped up our turkey hunting season. Arica got out again. She did some yelping, scouted around, had some hens come in, and heard a few gobbles. Why do turkeys shock gobble?Brayden and Phil got back out on their private piece. They had some birds on camera and gave it one final shot. They fooled with some hens but didn’t find any toms. They also went back to the public property they’ve been hunting and tried to strike something up. They got some gobbles and put the stalk on. Have you ever heard a turkey double gobble? They got set up and had one come in full strut but had an unfortunate mishap … find out what happened! The guys are planning a walleye fishing trip to Lake Erie along with attending the Walleye Festival. Ep 70Pennsylvania Woodsman - 2023 PA Spring Gobbler Finale: Lessons Learned
On this week's episode of the Pennsylvania Woodsman we welcome back Jason Miller from JMiller Custom Calls. Jason and Mitch swap stories recapping their season. If you've kept up with the recent turkey hunting episodes on the show, you know Mitch's season ended almost as quickly as it started, killing two birds in three hunts. Jason's PA season began on the slow side, but rapidly caught up during the mid season when he punched both his tags in one week. Jason is an experienced hunter punching a PA spring gobbler tag every year since 1994. Learning experiences are within the hunting story and there is plenty to take away and use for yourself from this conversation. Both Mitch and Jason made some mistakes this season, but ultimately the adjustments Jason made led him to some big gobblers! Each bird they harvested this season was called in with Jason's custom mouth calls. Ep 67[UNCENSORED] - Roosting & Rutting with Horny Toad and Keet Skeet
In this week’s [UNCENSORED] podcast by GoWild, we start off very uncensored and share some of our silly nicknames … find out how Arica got herself some extra unwanted attention on a forum years ago. She went turkey hunting after spotting a few birds on her property. She slipped in and did some calling but the tom was henned up and wouldn’t break away … or so she thought. He came back on his own a little later on and she put the stalk on him but he got away from her again. She leaned on her calling and got him talking and then she set the call down. He gobbled a bunch but never came back in. She got one more chance and got close but may have spooked him.Brayden and Phil have continued to get after it exploring a ton of ground but are having trouble getting a bird to commit. They’ve been finding birds but encountering some challenging scenarios. Dan Johnson is back on and gives some great advice for how/when you can get more aggressive when getting under roosted turkeys. We talk about some other late season tactics as the hunting gets tougher. Jacob got out and got aggressive too but it backfired on him. He accidentally set up too close to roosted birds and had to make a move to spin around but got busted by two toms. He moved into another spot but this time ran into a deer and a turkey that scattered away hard. It was a tough way to end his season, but now he’s confident next year will be better because he knows where the birds are hanging out. We also tease out some ideas of how you might be able to work a bird that was scared away.Arica found a deer fawn in her yard. This is pretty early so the team ponders the whole sequence of the rut and poses some thought provoking questions. How can trail cams help predict peak rut?We close the show with some random silliness. What is Derby pie? We all share our favorite pie and ice cream flavors. We also banter about the relationship between pooping and coffee. If you like what you’re hearing, please leave us a rate and review!![UNCENSORED] by GoWild kicks off your week with shameful nonsense, inappropriate convictions, and unfiltered tales from the woods, waters and whatevers. Ep 66Limbhanger - Map Scouting For Out Of State Gobblers
Jared Shaffer is joining the Limbhanger crew this week! If you know anything about Jared it should be that he's an absolute bonafied killer. It doesn't matter what animal he's chasing, he's going to have success. This turkey season was no different as he punched tags in California, West Virginia, Virginia, & Pennsylvania. For the traveling turkey hunter, developing your map scouting skillset is incredibly important. Jared shares with us some of his process for map scouting in states he's unfamiliar with, and how he narrows down areas based almost solely on topography. www.groundedbrand.comCheck out the Sportsmen's Empire Podcast Network for more relevant outdoor content! We break down some wrestling references and how they apply to the turkey woods. We discuss what beers that are allowed at deer camp. Good Turkey locator calling options. Ep 64[UNCENSORED] - Widowmakers, Woodpeckers, and Public Land Predicaments
In this week’s [UNCENSORED] podcast by GoWild, we’re continuing our talks about turkey hunting. This time, Dan, Chris, and Jacob got out on a public piece. They heard some gobbles and had a nice setup but ran into some issues with other hunters. They finished the day with some scouting and got a great lead for where to set up next time. We talk about etiquette when hunting turkeys on public land and how to handle other groups in the woods. Sometimes it’s better to have a chat and work together. How do you adapt and adjust when Plan A falls apart? We swap a few stories of the good, bag, and ugly on this troublesome topic. We also discuss some of the key differences between hunting public and private land. Brayden got out again and hunted an area he’s seen turkeys with lots of good sign. They were getting into their setup and then he realized he forgot one major item at home! They changed plans and managed to bring in a bird in the end, but didn’t punch the tag. They set up under a widowmaker and had a lively chance encounter with a woodpecker. How effective is scratching and scraping for bringing in turkeys?Derek mentions a hot tip for where to find turkeys late-morning/mid-day after other hunters have been pushing them around. He got out and heard a lot of birds talking in the trees. It’s a tough spot to get in and set up but he made it work. He got a group to come in, they made a ton of noise but ended up getting hung up. He talks through the decision-making process and how to handle a multi-bird situation. He’s still struggling with something from that hunt … is it better to move slowly and quietly when a bird is close or move so quick it won’t have time to understand what’s happening? He also gives a good bit of advice for how to end a hunt on a high note, even when it doesn’t finish with a flop.If you like what you’re hearing, please leave us a rate and review!![UNCENSORED] by GoWild kicks off your week with shameful nonsense, inappropriate convictions, and unfiltered tales from the woods, waters and whatevers. Man we've got a treat for you guys this week on the Southern Ground Hunting Podcast. We've been really trying to stick with deer content throughout the spring, but sometimes a turkey hunting story is so good, you just have to share it wherever it can be told. Ep 60Missouri Woods & Water - Torry Cook of MFK Game Calls
This week on the Missouri Woods & Water podcast Nate and Micah get the honor of talking with Torry Cook, owner of MFK Game calls and avid coyote hunter among other things. Then, we talk with Torry about what it's like living around wild coyotes and getting to be so close to them throughout their lives. If you don't know, several years ago Torry came across some tiny coyote pups and took care of them to the point that they are ok with him and his wife's presence. Ep 61Wisconsin Sportsman - The Turkey Season that Almost Didn't Happen
In this episode of the Wisconsin Sportsman Podcast, Josh talks with Pierce Nelles about how he recently scored on a double bearded WI gobbler. Pierce encountered a series of unfortunate events that led to him missing out on a few of the tags he was hoping to have for earlier in the turkey season. Needless to say, by the time Pierce's turkey season rolled around, he was chomping at the bit! After a couple of unsuccessful outings, Pierce made it happen on his first "real" turkey hunt of the year. And the bird was a beaut! 1"+ spurs, 21.5" of total beard length, and a beautiful fan to boot. Ep 59A Trio of Turkey Hunting & Scouting Tales
In this week’s [UNCENSORED] podcast by GoWild, we’re still talking turkey hunting. Brad got out and tried something new to start the hunt. He talks about a few of the choices he made, for better or for worse. He took a chance but it didn’t quite come together. Jacob, Dan, and Chris hit a WMA. They set their sights on a pretty remote spot and found out there’s a reason why hunters don’t get back into those areas. They did a bunch of scouting and found a few birds but weren’t being stealthy enough and got busted. They left the area knowing where the birds are and will be coming back. Brayden got out with his uncle and some buddies too. They got a longbeard to shock gobble on the roost but then he went silent. They got some intel on a few other toms and quickly shifted gears. They planned an ambush and got in between several birds. They brought one in but made one critical mistake … find out what it was to avoid it on your next hunt! After that they decided to chase the other group of birds. They made a move and give a hot tip for keeping gobblers interested. Their sneak paid off and they took a shot, but it was a little too far. It was a great hunt nonetheless. What’s better: killing birds or the chase? We also talk about how much better turkeys can see and hear than we can. If you like what you’re hearing, please leave us a rate and review!![UNCENSORED] by GoWild kicks off your week with shameful nonsense, inappropriate convictions, and unfiltered tales from the woods, waters and whatevers. Ep 58Pennsylvania Woodsman - Secret Weapon Turkey Calling w/ Matt Dale
On this week's episode of the Pennsylvania Woodsman, Mitch chat's with Matt Dale from Dale Outdoors. Mitch opens by recapping his exciting week of turkey hunting and filling his second tag at the end of week one with a bow! If you listened to last week's episode of Mitch's opening day gobbler, he talked about using the "whine" call. He first heard this call explained on one of Matt's youtube videos. We begin our conversation by diving into this call - what it is, how and when to use it, and its context for hunting situations. We continue down the rabbit hole of keeping realism in your turkey calling. This includes using "wheel-wheel's", "do-it do-it's", gobbler yelping, and more. We discuss the value of volume and cadence in calls, especially in everyone's favorite yelping scenario. How does a spring turkey hunter yelp sound vs. how does a real hen yelp sound? Last, Matt recaps a hunt for a bird he called "Quirky", which took 7 hunts until he connected by pulling out an old secret weapon. This is dynamite turkey hunting information to keep you fired up midway through the season!Check out the Sportsmen's Empire Podcast Network for more relevant, outdoor content! After that hunt, he joined up with the Oklahoma Outdoor Outreach Foundation for a one of a kind turkey hunt with a 9 year old boy named Brock. After heading home and getting back to work for a few days, John then headed to his buddies place in west Texas to once again try to get a Rio Grande turkey in shotgun distance. In this week’s [UNCENSORED] podcast by GoWild, Brad is back and talks about his weekend camping and fishing trip with his son and the Boy Scouts. They slept in bunks, caught a ton of fish, and had a blast. We’ve got a hot secret to catch big largemouth bass. They also did well on bass that hit plastics and artificials over worms.Arica and her family went camping and had a better time without any tornado warnings. She reminds us how quickly prime camping spots get booked up. They set up a lemonade stand and were a huge hit at the campground. Starve Hollow State Recreation Area in Indiana comes highly recommended!Jacob went turkey hunting and explored a large area to get a better handle on the terrain. He took a gamble and had some interactions with some gobblers … find out how it ended. Ep 50Limbhanger - Green-Up Gobblers
We've got our friend Jordan Pope this week on the Limbhanger Turkey Hunting Podcast. If you follow Jordan or know him at all, you'd know that when he gets on a roll, it's hard to stop the train. By that we mean once he figures out what the gobblers are doing in that portion of the season, he goes into full kill mode and it doesn't stop until the turkeys start doing something different. Speaking of the turkeys doing something different, our main topic today is hunting them once green-up occurs. This year it seemed like despite the cool weather, the woods bloomed super fast. Jordan shares with us some of his strategy once the seasons start to change. From here the boys recount the events from first light until noon in each area - all with exciting encounters and lessons learned. Mitch however, hid the lucky horseshoe in his backpack and was able to find a lone mountain top gobbler before the buzzer ran out at quitting time. Ep 38Oklahoma Outdoors - Uncut: My 2023 Nebraska Turkey Trip
John had a heck of a trip to Nebraska to visit his sister and chase Merriam turkeys. On this week's uncut episode of the Oklahoma Outdoors podcast, John talks about the many times he got caught by gobblers with his pants down, multiple close calls, and how distracting all the deer sign was. It is almost hard to believe he didn't fill his tag after situations like walking up on birds midday, turkeys gobbling when he didn't have his bow, and even calling a long beard to 10 steps! He really has nothing to blame but himself.Even after all the mishaps, it was still an incredible trip. He got to do a lot of scouting for both turkeys and deer, and got permission on yet another property for this fall. John also got to see the effects of EHD for himself, finding multiple deadheads while walking around scouting. It is truly incredible how diverse whitetails and turkeys are and all the places they can thrive, even when it seems the cards are stacked against them.Check out the Sportsmen's Empire Podcast Network for more relevant, outdoor content!
