In conjunction with University research, Mary Jo is working to lead our state in the right direction for long term healthy wild turkey populations. Ongoing research is monitoring population trends in different portions of the state, and observing surrounding influences that may produce higher, lower, or stable populations. We discuss habitat types and balances, differences between WMUs, population trends, and more. Nate Rozeveld is joined by Matt Raysin for this week's episode of Michigan Wild. Matt is the co-host of Generations to Hunt podcast, and joined this week to talk about his turkey hunting and chasing rabbits with his beagles. The first week of turkey season has come and gone and holy smokes was it an eventful one! Birds were missed, birds were later shot, but most importantly, a good time was had by all! This week on the Pennsylvania Woodsman we are joined once again by Jason Goe from Final Stand YouTube channel. Previously Jason discussed hunting Sika deer in Maryland, this week we unpack the rest of Jason's successful fall of 2023. Jason was able to harvest a mountain whitetail with a bow, a fall gobbler, and his first Pennsylvania black bear. In addition to PA and MD Sika deer, he tagged two whitetail bucks with a bow in MD during the archery season. Every April the Wisconsin DNR releases a questionnaire to the public to ask for public input regarding conservation-related issues that are on the radar looking towards the future. The in-person Spring Hearings are then held by each district's Conservation Congress, where citizens can ask questions, and make their opinions known about issues that matter to them. It's an incredible opportunity for regular people like you and I to provide input, and an even better opportunity for outdoorsmen and conservationists to help further initiatives towards positive change. Some of the questions also make you think pretty hard.This week, Pierce sits down with Wisconsin BHA Board member, Alec Bekkers, to discuss a few of the Hearing questions that stuck out to them the most, and more importantly, what some of them mean for conservation, public land access, and hunter/angler rights and opportunities. Even if you are not doing much land management, you probably would like an opportunity to kill a bird annually. Over harvesting is the fast track for a declining population. Right now, the South has heated turkey issues in every state. Some hunters are openly against data collected from biologists and researchers while others are pushing for new regulations to better conserve the game bird for future generations. These steps include shooting the bird, gutting or evisceration, aging the bird, plucking the feathers, removing the crop, hanging and drying, plucking the wings and legs, and removing the tail feathers.
