To many of us, September is viewed as the kick off of hunting season! For those of us in the southeast, it's usually brought to us by a dove shoot or two. For some, it's heading to the mountains to hunt mule deer, antelope, or elk. Whatever your situation may be, I think we can all agree that we are happy that hunting is back in our lives! Join us for this conversation as we talk about shooting doves, swatting mosquitos, preparing to head to elk country, deer season preparations, and a few more odds and ends!

When most of us think of duck hunting, we think of the Mississippi River, the Prairies of the Dakotas, Saskatchewan, or maybe Argentina if we're feeling real adventurous. Ramsey Russell has spent his life duck hunting and collecting experiences in areas that never cross our minds in terms of chasing waterfowl. The Netherlands, Russia, Peru, Africa, Iran, you name it, and he has been there. This was an incredibly interesting conversation with stories from a man that has truly seen the world. Check it out!!

We are getting so close to the kick off of the 2021/2022 Fall hunting season! In this episode we talk about the southern social event of dove hunting, how it is an unforgivable sin to break a dove hunting tradition, the rare occurrence of Brad coming to help us out at Kudzu Bluff, a new "zoo" project on the near horizon, and answer some listener submitted questions about food plot planting and arrow spines!

We are back after our first full week back at Kudzu Bluff, and it was all about focussing on the small victories (emphasis on small). We learned that we aren't very good mechanics, and that a can of WD40 is worth its weight in gold. We also touch on why we left Cottonmouth, the dangers of handling a skunk indoors, why wrenches are so hard to keep up with, and much more. Check it out!!

What are some of the biggest key factors in having a successful deer season? If you were to ask us, we would without hesitation tell you that it's the amount of time and work put in before the season even starts. This week, Jordan I discuss the pre-season preparation we will be doing for our second year at Kudzu Bluff. There are so many factors to consider; what we learned from last year, food plots to be planted this year, new stand sights, new areas to hunt that we missed in the first fall, and so much more. We've learned that it takes time to learn a new place. Hopefully ya'll can learn with us, and take some of what we've learned and apply to your own situation. Either way, this is one way to get excited for the upcoming fall!

The days of killing time in the summer and dreaming of fall is officially over. August is here and we are looking at Fall right in the face. One of the top requests we always receive for episode topics is bow set up. So this week, Jordan and talk about our particular bow setups and the why for all of it. We also spend sometime focusing specifically on elk hunting preparation. Jimmy Primos is no stranger to a bull elk. He's been doing it ever since the Primos team started getting into elk hunting. However, up until this past September, he had never elk hunted with archery equipment. For those of you out there that have tried your hand at bow hunting elk before, you know it's no easy task. Well, imagine trying it for the first time at 73 years old. What an incredible adventure; a story of hunting in its purest form, and taking the highs and lows that it elk country offers in stride. This podcast is being released on Monday, July 26, 2021, a day before the episode about this hunt airs on outdoor channel.

Brent Henderson is the author of the newly released book, The Roar Within, which is a book that confidently charges at the subject of Men finding their purpose. Through his vast amount of experiences in the outdoors and just life in general, Brent has become a very credible source of knowledge on the many of the struggles men face today. This week, we have a long conversation about the book, and more importantly, about some of the most common and deadly traps men are likely to fall into.

We traveled up to Starkville, Mississippi to have a conversation with Brad Cumbest and Houston Harding, who are both members of the Mississippi State baseball team. With the win of the 2021 college world series only a few days old, we wanted to get a first take from these guys what the whole experience was like. As luck would have it, both of them are also outdoorsmen, so we made sure to work a little bit of hunting and fishing into the conversation. We would also like to extend a special thanks to Owen's Outfitters for allowing us to use their store as a place to record.

Last week Lake, Jordan, and Brad had an encounter with a timber rattlesnake in the middle of the woods. the situation resulted in a quick iPhone video of the snake and the guys explaining that they don't kill snakes when they stumble up on them in the woods. After sharing this on our social media, we stirred up an unintentional firestorm of comments, arguments, and heated debates on whether or not the snake should've killed. That what led us to contacting Terry Vandeventer, who is a herpetologist and one of the most knowledgable and outspoken educators on the subject of snakes.

This features a story of one of the most bad-luck filled days of hunting we have ever heard of, tales of old Truth videos, Jordan begging for an iron-on shirt patch at a local hardware store, the importance of using the correct archery pin, and a whole lot more. Check it out!

Chip Henderson is the senior pastor of Pinelake church, an avid bowhunter, and most importantly, a father. He shares the story of his son, Regan, killing an absolutely giant buck with his bow. Most importantly, he shares how Regan's journey to becoming a bow hunter began, and the significance it had in their relationship as father and son.

We decided to revisit one of our most popular podcast topics from last year! Dr. Marcus Lashley is a wildlife biologist and ecologist, that has done extensive work dealing with wildlife management, wildlife conservation, conservation biology, disturbance ecology, and much more. In this episode we focus on the practice of trapping and habitat improvement, and how both correlate with wildlife management.

Aaron Warbritton is well-known hunter and conservationist, most widely recognized for his work with The Hunting Public on YouTube. In this episode we talk with Aaron about the most recent fundraiser they put on to raise money to start up a research project that will be headed up by Dr. Mike Chamberlain, otherwise known as the Wild Turkey Doctor. We also take the conversation into deeper detail for the reasoning of the fundraiser and the growing concern about wild turkey populations.

This episode is bittersweet. We discuss the ending of the Mississippi turkeys season, as well as our latest trip to Iowa. The midwest has becoming a team favorite in the past few years. The amount of turkeys we're able to see and hear is nothing short of remarkable. This year's trip came with a little bit of twist, with Jordan drawing a muzzleloading shotgun tag. Fewer things in this world are known to make a turkey hunters' skin crawl worse than the thought of missing a turkey. If the thought of that scares you, just imagine missing two, in back-to-back days. In this episode we hear the sad, but funny story of how I managed to do all of this missing. Despite the subpar marksmanship, there are still a few things to learn in what it took to get both of them into range.

This is about as much live action updates as you can get without doing a full live-streamed podcast. Today is Monday, March 15, 2021; opening day of spring turkey season in MS. This morning Jordan, Dave Owens, and myself headed out and made a morning hunt with plans of recording a podcast about it right after, and thats exactly what we did. We discuss the action that took place, things to learn from that turkey encounter that can apply to most all early-season hunting, and end the conversation with our favorite hunting story from last week's South Florida trip!

I don't think there is a piece of hunting clothing that gets more thought out and loaded-down, than a turkey vest. Every turkey hunter is different. Every turkey hunter seems to have that one thing that they just cannot go into the turkey woods without, but one way or the other, every single one of those vest pockets tends to end up filled. So the question is, what do you carry? We break down all of our turkey gear that we walk into the woods with; calls, binoculars, snacks, decoys, and everything in between.

One of the most common requested topics that we get is how to manage a property for turkeys. What can you practically do to make a place hold more turkeys, to have better turkey hunting opportunities? I sat down with Brad Farris and Chipper Gibbes who both have had endless amounts of first-hand experience with this very subject. We cover everything from habitat improvement, food plot planting, hunting practices, and much more. This podcast is applicable to the hunter that owns or leases a small piece of ground, all the way to someone who may own thousands of acres. No matter how much property you have or have access to, there are things you can do to make it better for wild turkeys.

Hunter Farrior and Austin Sills are turkey hunters in every sense of the term, they are Mississippi natives, and they are also the two men behind Spring Legion. This conversation takes us all over the topic board; First turkey memories, what it means to catch the turkey hunting bug, the college years of hunting turkeys, working up the courage to mention one of our favorite public land spots, whether or not using a decoy makes you a lesser hunter, this conversation had it all. Mike Chamberlain is one of the most knowledgeable out there when it comes to the subject of wild turkeys. And after the incredible amount of interest that was created by our 'Corona Gobblers' episode with him last spring, both I and a vast majority of our listeners have been clamoring to have him back on the show. This episode takes a deep dive into the subject of wild turkeys. We take a retrospective look at some of the same topics we covered last years, as well as jump on completely new subject material. It was one of the more interesting and informative conversations I've ever had on this podcast. ENJOY!!

Troy and I found ourselves sitting inside the Kudzu Bluff camp house watching the rain and discussing the final week of the 2020/2021 deer season. Lessons learned, questions asked, and the little planning we have left to do for these final few days to be spent in tree stands and Double Bulls. We might have even slipped an old turkey story or two in there because we can't help but be thinking about spring already.

Myself and Jordan are wading through our thoughts of what we can do to find success in these last few remaining days of deer season. We discuss tactics that have worked for us in late season in the past, and also talk about what we have learned from our first year of hunting at Kudzu Bluff.

Snow is falling at Kudzu Bluff and Troy, Jordan, and myself are trying to catch up on all thats been going on between the Bluffs and Togo Island. We talk about post-rut and late season tactics, the benefits of using climbing stands, Jordan's need for some rifle shooting lessons, and the value of a good set of deer tracking dogs.

From the hills of Kudzu Bluff to the Mississippi River Bottoms, we were treated to some of most fun rut hunts we've ever had. So much has happened in these past weeks; Brad came to full draw before he even had a chance to climb a tree, Jimmy Grunted in a buck off the ground, and Lake had a hot doe run towards him with 8 bucks chasing her! I had the unique opportunity to spend a duck hunting morning with my good friend, B.C Rogers, of Wren & Ivy. B.C is one of the most duck hunting-crazed people that I have ever been around, so I thought would be the perfect chance to have a conversation about it. Subjects discussed include; getting ducks to finish on foggy mornings, the correct way to pronounce "6pointszn", measuring success in a social media-driven society, and much more.

After the first full-hunting week at Kudzu Bluff we have hit another problem. After an unexpected, positive Covid-19 test, Jordan is stuck at on quarantine until further notice. Leaving the rest of us up at the bluffs one team member down, and Jordan left to his own devices. Other subjects covered include: the signs of rut kicking off at the new camp, Brad Killing his first deer of the year, Lake having a shooter buck get past him, and poor Jimmy rolling into camp after the activity had slowed down.

The Hunting Public is arguably the most exciting thing happening in the hunting video world right now, and they have recently taken the excitement factor even farther by bow hunting off the ground. This week we are diving in deep to this subject with THP's own, Zach Ferenbaugh, who has made the decision to hunt exclusively from the ground this season. We cover tactics, how he picks areas to setup, the contrast between ground hunting and tree stand hunting, as well as the new challenges that come along with it!

Brad and I are at the tail end of an archery hunt in Kansas and facing adverse conditions. We talk about deer activity, moving stands, how to deal with locked down bucks, calling tactics, and the best ways to manage time spent in the stand.

Gary and Charlie of Muscadine Bloodline Traveled down to spend the weekend hunting with Jordan and Lake. Despite not having favorable weather, there were multiple arrows flung and good times had. Lake and Jordan dive into the somewhat controversial subject of whether or not it is acceptable to give names to the deer you're going to hunt. Most importantly, they discuss the topic of tree stand location, which is truly a make-or-break when it comes to whitetail hunting. They also discuss on going challenges of learning a new property and big-pictures plans to make this a successful and learning-filled season.

Today Jordan and Lake are discussing the ever important subject of stand access. It is not overstating to say that this can easily make or break a hunt, and it is absolutely crucial to finding consistent success. So we do our best to cover the topic in depth. We're still trying to wade our way through the unexpected twists and turns that this unorthodox year has thrown at us. between untimely hurricanes and head-high kudzu we've met some new challenges but still remain optimistic! We also dive into some questions sent in by listeners that are very applicable to early season hunting!

Dove Season is this upcoming weekend. Bow season for whitetails is right at a month away. We are so close to fall hunting season in the South being in full-swing that it's hard to contain our excitement. We talk about dove fields, finding new hunting spots, pre-season scouting, indicators that the spot you found is good or bad, Red Lobster biscuits, and much more. Check it out!

Ted Nugent is not only one of the most notable faces in the hunting community, he is also one of the most passionate and driven individuals when it comes to the subject of protecting hunting rights and the values our country was founded on. We drove so far south in the state of Louisiana that the world stopped and the water started. We spent a full day in the marshes, trying our best to catch speckled trout, red fish, and anything else that we could get to bite. It was an incredible day of fishing thanks to our friend, Travis Lovell, of Reelin Good Charters. Travis has spent his entire life fishing in the bayous of Southern Louisiana, so to say he was able to give us an insightful conversation about how to successfully fish that area would be an understatement.

One way to beat the heat and boredom that can sometimes set in during the summer months is to hit the water. Jordan and I collectively regroup after a weekend of fishing in the gulf; discussing things such as shark phobia, wade fishing, stingrays cruising by your ankles, and sight fishing triple tails. Most importantly however, we talk about a upcoming fishing trip to South Louisiana with Jimmy and my dad.

A lot of topics topics are covered in this weeks STL Podcast. Fishing competitions with your buddies, whether or not front-boating should be illegal, successfully popping wheelies on a tractor, and getting trail camera pictures of bucks in the pre-season are all part of this episode. Jordan and I decided to go back over some of the previous hunting seasons and pick out the most embarrassing/funny stories that never quite made it to video. Some of these things happened when the camera wasn't running, some of them got lost in the editing process, and some of them were just so embarrassing at the time that we just didn't want anyone to know what happened. Needless to say, I don't think either of us have laughed this hard during a podcast episode. Enjoy!
