This past April, I moderated the Republican Florida District 13 Congressional Race that included Anna Paulina Luna, Kevin Hayslett, Amanda Makki, Audrey Henson and Christine Quinn. Both in the preparation and moderation of the debate, I learned quite a bit about the candidates, their intentions, and their motivations for running for Pinellas County’s Congressional seat. Since that time, the campaign from Kevin Hayslett has turned ugly - but only towards one other candidate: Anna Paulina Luna. In the course of the past 2 months, the ugliness and complete lies supplied by the Hayslett campaign have been some of the most egregious examples of false propaganda ever levied against a fellow Republican candidate. Hayslett’s campaign has sent flier after ugly, photoshopped flier to the residents of Tampa Bay, attempting to create a reflexive feedback loop of fertile fallacies regarding Luna. Hayslett as well has used the deceptive phrase that he is a “Trump Republican” even though Anna Paulina Luna is the only candidate who is officially endorsed by President Donald Trump. A closer examination into Hayslett’s claims of being a conservative Republican find clear contradictions to his claims: On Hayslett’s campaign website, he claimed to be a member of Trinity Presbyterian Church - a church that supports Critical Race Praxis, the development of a critical consciousness, Open Borders, Amnesty for illegal immigrants, transgenderism and a postmodern view of the Christian faith. What does it take to finally convince someone to embrace what should be plainly evident to everyone? The signers of the Declaration of Independence were not just making a corporate or political decision to separate from the British: each man was signing a potential death sentence. The news that the informational data dam may have broken several weeks ago through Elon Musk’s purchase of the social media platform Twitter sent the world into a hyper-spin mode and into two entrenched camps: those who value free speech and the free flow of information and on the opposite side, those who believe in authoritarian restrictions and strict methods of informational control. To those who value free speech, the opportunity for truth to arise in an era of repressive tolerance would signal at least a glimmer of hope that constitutional norms may be restored in the United States of America. The critical social justice advocates in the United States have been hard at work over the past 20 years pushing the class struggle and race struggle conflict theory of Postcolonial Theory in nearly every facet of western education. Postcolonial theory advocates claim that African Americans, Asians and Latinos (of which I am – once again – of Cuban descent) belong categorically to “disparate people groups” and need to be liberated, or, “decolonized.” And of course they refer back to the examples of imperial European powers colonized Africa, Asia and South America as their examples. We are in the process of transitioning from an analog, objective, real, physical world into a digital, subjective, surreal world. In that transition into a digital subjective world, we are experiencing a transformation of what is accepted as reality, when it isn’t reality: it is synthetic. In this discussion enters Jean Beaudriallard and his understanding of hyperreality the creation of synthetic reality, which is not reality at all: it is the creation of something that is more real than real. It is beyond propaganda, but propaganda is certainly utilized. It is the creation of simulacra and simulation. And in this world of simulacra, we are being told to ignore objective reality and embrace hyperreality: an unreality that has no connection with that which it claims to represent.
