This weeks broadcast with Chris Johnston features Westoe Brass Band a community brass band that is based in the town of South Shields. The band is actively involved in the local community and collaborates with the South Tyneside Council to participate in various local events throughout the year, such as the South Shields Parade, Remembrance Sunday, and Armed Forces Day. Additionally, they also perform concerts at the Amphitheatre located on South Shields seafront. This weeks broadcast with Chris Johnston features The North Limburg Brass Band & David Thornton.At the end of August in 1995, a few fanatical brass players from the north of Belgian Limburg gathered around the idea of starting a brass band together. They looked around the region and gathered musicians from the HaFa orchestras of Achel, Overpelt, Lommel, Eksel and Peer, among others. The first rehearsal took place on September 2 of that same year. This weeks broadcast with Chris Johnston features The Canadian Staff Band Of The Salvation Army.The Canadian Staff Band, in its earliest form, existed as a Territorial Band in the early 1900s.On May 29th 1914, most of the band perished during the sinking of the Empress of Ireland in the St. Lawrence River.While attempts were made to restart the band shortly after, it was not until 1969, under the territorial command of Commissioner Clarence Wiseman and leadership of then Captain Norman Bearcroft, that the band was reformed. Sir Malcolm died on 23rd September 2006.The Malcolm Arnold Society was founded in 1991, and since 2006 the town of Northampton celebrates the composer with an annual Malcolm Arnold Festival.
