Being able to investigate my very own records on a weekly basis is quite rewarding especially when we are able to re-revive productions for all to share and enjoy unfiltered Joy. Now! An opressed institution unrecognised by the mainstream unwittingly unlocked the very DNA from Mother Soul herself, laced within Hope in The very hope of breaking down the stigma’s associated with the Sounds of the 1970s Underground. Out of one comes many in desperation! That was the view of DJs formally known as disc jockeys between the 1970s to mid 80s Mainly due to the wine bars and high street night clubs witnessing their dance-floors dissolve at the latter half of the 80s taking a massive hit when the night life shifting as a new experimental music scene turned Dance culture on its axis. Cutting out both wine bar owners and jocks alike having a detrimental effect on the way we craved music, resulting in Chicago House evolving into a hybrid called Acid, The detrimental effect was massive killing off the public houses (Pubs) of whom were once stable platform for club 80s Soul scene for what seemed now like an eternity, It was the turn of the 1990s which saw another step forward in the evolution in Dance as the demonisation of rave music took effect spearheaded by the media, public backlash in totalitarian ignorance, and the authorities which prompted bold steps for clubbers with half now turning 180 degrees towards Spiritual uplifting vocals of influence! Whilst the other half spearheaded a resurgence of all souls past…with a modern retro twist ironically called Acid Jazz. This is my story!. One club at a time one memory in my mind! This is it! The tempo that we have been waiting for! Within this very edition you will get to hear, feel and experience the raw power of true Soul straight out of the Underground powerhouses of Motown, Philly and Salsoul of whom conjured their signature big band stables to the raw power of the record Label. Living for Friday nights to embrace the warmth of the Disco lights was the perfect way to wash away the weekdays, At the movies Blaxploitation turned into Disco sensations all around the same time that the elements came together whilst the all important DJs plied their trades working directly for the record labels premiering new cuts on live dance floors, Upping the Disc Jockeys profile meant upping its radio play… and popularly meant sales, Win win win. American Movies and TV shows bombarded our institution that was prior to this moment Quintessentially British. mainly Toffs or Tarquins!! Thankfully Soul artists took front and centre spearheading this US assault of the airwaves after so long bombarding our very conditioned UK charts of popular music. All music was about to get a Love injection direct from the Underground Gay club scene! Visiting the record store has always been a joyous affair spanning back to a 1970s London Town filled with tradition culture and curiosity.. Ushering a new decade that laded the foundations for an ever growing popularity of pirate radio which provided a greater awareness to sounds soulful from continents which seemed so near to my heart, yet sounded so far! It was not long before the role of the disc jockey broke free from the shackles of the mainstream to seek grooves identifiable with urban cultures and trending audiences that frequented bars and clubs within our local boroughs.
