212: Luann Abrams, Millionaire Next Door
Today is the second installment of the “Millionaires Next Door Series,” with another great guest Luann Abrams from Bend, OR. Two years ago she and her husband hit the $1mil mark, and are almost 2/3 of the way to the second million already! She is a former aerospace engineer, and is now a stay at home mom (but has a few side-hustles). And now that the couple has made it this far, her husband will be quitting his job soon to be a part of a start-up. He wont be making a salary for some time…So how are they going to manage?

Hosted on Acast. 211: Darrow Kirkpatrick, Millionaire Next Door
We’re kicking off ‘Millionaire Next Door Week’ on So Money today. We’ve been revving up for this spectacular week for some time, I’ve been enlisting your help to either nominate yourself or people you know and excited to say that we received many more entries than we could record for this first week…But perhaps we’ll do a second week later in the fall. So many nuggets of wisdom to share… Our first guest is Darrow Kirkpatrick, the author of Retiring Sooner: How to Accelerate your Financial Independence and who runs the blog Can I Retire Yet? And the answer for Darrow, at least is, YES. He, in fact retired when he was 50 years old with over a million in the bank. You wouldn’t really know…He has a modest home, rides his bike most places…And when I visited at his home a few years ago on a story for Yahoo News, I don't recall seeing a TV in his living room. Darrow graduated from the University of Virginia with a degree in Civil Engineering. He started and sold his own business…After 29 years of programming, designing and managing computer software, Darrow was able to retire at the ripe age of 50. How did he do it? Well we’ll discuss this in the show momentarily but he attributes a lot of his financial success to good ol’ hard work, frugality, serious saving and certain investing strategies. Patience helped along the way, too.

Hosted on Acast. 208: (Replay) Ryan Holiday, Media Strategist & Bestselling Author
Today's guest is Ryan Holiday. I had this wonderful guest on earlier this Spring and Ryan is a thought-provoking media strategist, bestselling author of three books, and he's not even 30 yet - I'm so jealous! Most recently his very successful books is called, The Obstacle is the Way: The Timeless Art of Turning Trials into Triumph. He has been responsible for a number of manipulative stunts and media controversies, and has been accused of being a "media manipulator" which he writes about in his first book Trust Me, I'm Lying. And he’s only 27 years old! After dropping out from University of California at 19 to apprentice under Robert Greene, author of The 48 Laws of Power, he went on to advise many bestselling authors and multiplatinum musicians, including 50 Cent and Tim Ferriss, whom I had the honor of interviewing earlier this year (check out episode 60).Ryan also served as Director of Marketing at American Apparel for many years, where his campaigns ended up being used as case studies by Twitter, YouTube, and Google and written about in AdAge, the New York Times, and Fast Company. Ryan now works as the media columnist for the New York Observer. And his work has appeared in Forbes, Fast Company, The Huffington Post, The Columbia Journalism Review, ThoughtCatalog and Medium.com.

Hosted on Acast. 206: Dorie Clark, Marketing Strategy Consultant, Speaker and Author
Today's guest is Dorie Clark. She's a frequent contributor to Harvard Business Review, Time and Entrepreneur. She's been recognized as a branding expert by The Associated Press, Inc, and Fortune. What's a brand? Yeah we're gonna talk about that with Dorie. I believe I have a brand; sometimes I hesitate to admit it because I think it sounds, sometimes, a little snobby to say that I have a brand. But she puts it in a way that really democratizes this concept of having a personal brand. You have a brand, whether you're working at a company, an entrepreneur, a mom staying at home with your kids raising them, you have a brand! And so the earlier you recognize that, and nurture that, and cultivate that, the better off you can be.Now Dorie also serves as a marketing strategy consultant and speaker for many notable clients, including Google, Microsoft, Yale University, Fidelity, and World Bank among others. She's the author of two great books; the first is called "Reinventing You", and more recently she's the author of "Stand Out: How to Find Your Breakthrough Idea and Build a Following Around It". She currently is an adjunct professor of business administration at Duke University's Fuqua School of Business, and a visiting professor for IE Business School in Madrid.Dorie was also featured on Huffington Post as a 100 Must Follow on Twitter in 2013 and 2014. She's also on the Nifty 50 list of top women on Twitter, and most notably she was named on of Inc Magazine's 100 Great Leadership Speakers for Your Next Conference, and recognized in Forbes as one of 25 professional networking experts to watch in 2015. So she is, as it pertains to branding and leadership, she's your go-to and she's on the show today. So I'm very honored.

Hosted on Acast. Now, if you're someone who's always on the go, looking for a way to consume the day's top new stories in the fastest way possible, you may already be a subscriber to this or you've heard about it, but you have to check out theSkimm - one word. It's fun to read, easy to understand, easy to explain to a friend after work at a happy hour, what's say going on in Greece or the latest in the electoral race. And I'm not only a fan, I guess you could also say I'm sort of a contributor to theSkimm. In my partnership with Chase Slate, the brand partnered with theSkimm to create some cool and interesting editorial content around financial fitness that I helped create. So I'm very proud to introduce today's guests, the co-founders of theSkimm. They are friends, Danielle Weisberg and Carly Zakin and you're gonna love their story. Carly and Danielle, they originally met in Rome, they were studying abroad, it was a rainy day and they were both studying in Rome, they were in college.Years later they reconnected in New York as they were both producers for NBC News - how bout that? 199: Philip Taylor, Founder of FinCon & Blogger PTMoney.com
Today I am interviewing the blogger Philip Taylor from PT Money. In 2007 he created his blog to share his experiences trying to get out of debt, building savings and getting educated on personal finance. Even though he had finance in his blood – his father was a CPA – already had a career as a CPA himself doing financial auditing and public accounting, he still needed to learn more about personal finance. But he quickly took control of his financial life, and turned his situation around – blogging about it all the way.In 2011, he created FinCon, an annual conference for financial bloggers in the fall, which I have attended! He has also written for U.S. News & World Report, TurboTax and others, as well as made a few TV appearances. He generates his income entirely from his blog, and focuses on saving for early retirement, growing his businesses, investing in real estate and investing in his family.Three key takeaways:Starting a part-time blog in 2007 and how he was able to grow that into a full-fledged business. When you feel entitled to spend…ever felt that way? 197: Jeff Yeager, "The Ultimate Cheapskate"
What’s your definition of cheap? Do you think you’re cheap? Is the person you’re living with – cheap? I got into trouble once because I went on ABC news and talked about MY personal definition of cheap versus frugal…To me, being cheap means wasting time and energy to save money, being inconsiderate or rude or harmful in your pursuit of saving money. And as an example I mentioned some forms of extreme couponing. And boy did that get the couponers MAD! I got SO much hate email…! Now, not all couponing is bad. But I know there are people out there who spend hours a day to cut coupons and all they save is $20 or $30. $20 or $30 is not insignificant BUT when you account for all that time and energy and perhaps the fact that you were cutting coupons while your son needed your help with his science project…(I’m making this up!) that perhaps you’re not being frugal. You’re being CHEAP. And if you’re going to hate me for saying that, that’s OK by me! And all of this brings me to TODAY’s guest. Jeff Yeager, dubbed “The Ultimate Cheapskate” by Matt Lauer on NBC’s Today Show, specializes in teaching others how to spend smart in order to spend less and living frugally. He is also an accomplished author of several books on the topic, including “Don’t Throw That Away!” “The Cheapskate Next Door” and “The Ultimate Cheapskate’s Road Map to True Riches”. He hosts The Cheap Life on YouTube which also provides video content about living the good life at a fraction of the cost. If you’re an AARP member, perhaps you may recognize today’s guest as he is one of their saving’s experts.

Hosted on Acast. 194: (Replay) David Bach, 9 Time New York Times Bestselling Author
Happy Friday everyone. I'm doing a new thing starting this Friday and every Friday until the end of the summer. I've decided, just decided the other day, that I'm gonna air re-runs. You know, summer Fridays tend to be quieter than the other days, and I see it in my download numbers. I don't get as many people listening in on Fridays. Also, it's hard to get guests over the summer. So I'm at a point now where it's a lot easier for me to just air re-runs on Fridays. I hope this isn't gonna be too much of a problem for listeners. I mean I have already listeners telling me to slow down a little bit, and this is a way that's helping me but also addressing I think the demand out there. I can tell, you guys have other things to do on Fridays. And those of you that are tuning in, thank you! I appreciate you. But for now until the end of the summer, let's just dedicate Fridays to some oldies but goodies. And today we're gonna kick it off with the great David Bach. David, as you may know, is famous for his FinishRich books including Start Late, Finish Rich and Smart Women Finish Rich. One of my personal favorite books of David’s is The Automatic Millionaire. We talk about David a little bit actually in yesterday's show with James Altucher when he is trying to convince me that 401(k)'s are thumbs down, no good and I took him to task, but mentioned David Bach's input as well there. David is also an internationally renowned motivational and financial speaker. He's a regularly featured financial expert in the media, you've seen him everywhere! He's been on the Oprah Winfrey show six times. He's been a regular contributor to The Today Show. 191: Steve Chou, Founder of MyWifeQuitHerJob.com
Back in 2007 our guest today Steve Chou and his wife Jennifer found themselves in a position that many couples face. Jennifer found out that she was pregnant, and with their growing family came greater financial concerns. Neither Steve nor Jennifer were happy with their jobs, and were stuck in a routine of complacency: drag yourself out of bed, go to work, come home, watch television, go to sleep, repeat. But with the news of the baby Steve became motivated to take charge of his life and provide better financial security for his family – especially knowing his wife wanted to quit her job to become a stay at home mom. He and Jennifer had to find a way to replace her six-figure income; thus they created Bumblebee Linens, an online store for linens for special occasions. The success of the business allowed Jennifer to stay at home while still providing for her family, while Steve kept his day job. He started mywifequitherjob.com to share his experiences and help other families deal with the same challenges. He also has a podcast of the same name, and an e-commerce course on how to create a profitable online store. 187: Paula Pant, Blogger of Afford Anything
Many of you have requested my guest today to be on So Money, so I’m very excited to finally have her here: Paula Pant of the blog and movement Afford Anything. She is a self-proclaimed globetrotter, entrepreneur and investor. She has traveled to 33 countries and owns seven rental properties – wow, can I come visit? But above all, Paula is her own boss and lives on her own terms, which sounds pretty great to me. Her belief is that money can fuel your dreams and that it’s about growing your wealth, not pinching pennies. Her blog Afford Anything is part of a larger movement to allow people to ditch the 9-5 lifestyle and master their money to embark on their dreams. For Paula her dream was to travel …and as a newspaper editor and reporter she found her work exhilarating but it wasn’t enough. She wasn’t pursing her dreams. She quit her job eventually to travel the world…and from that experience AffordAnything.com was born.

Hosted on Acast. 184: Hannah Ouimet, Poshmark Entrepreneur and Founder of Hannah Beury
Hannah Ouimet is here on the show today. She's running a six-figure fashion business from her phone, yes, by selling some of her unwanted clothes and accessories. And now she's gotten so good at it, she knows how to buy items elsewhere at a low cost and re-sell them. And by the way, she's only 23-years-old. She got her start in college and she's still in college. She decided to just sell some things from her closet that she didn't want anymore to make a few extra bucks, and she did this on a site called "Poshmark", which allows users to sell their unwanted clothes and accessories to fellow Poshmark App users. And before she knew it, Hannah was not only making a profit selling her own stuff, but also her friends items. She started buying designer apparel on deep discount, reselling that for a profit, and over time she has amassed something like 2 million users on Poshmark and she's been inspired to actually go out on her own, still working with Poshmark but also starting her own e-commerce shop called "Hannah Beury". Her success story's been covered by the Wall Street Journal, Fox News, and Refinery29 among other places. And now she's on So Money! Very proud and excited to share her journey with you because I think what it really teaching us is that with an app and a phone and some unwanted clothes, and we've all got some unwanted items in our closet, you can make a few bucks and in best case scenario you can turn it into a lucrative business and it is this entrepreneurial success story that has brought her to this show.

Hosted on Acast.
