359: Kevin Olusola, Beat Boxer for Pentatonix

Rounding out So Money millennial week is today's guest, Kevin Olusola. If you are an a cappella fan then you might even know Kevin because he is part of an a cappella group that has gone platinum. He is a member of the Grammy winning vocal quintet Pentatonix. Kevin Olusola, also known as KO, is the beat boxer for the group. Since bursting on to the music scene in 2011, the group has sold more than 2.7 million albums in the US alone. They won a Grammy and the group has played for sold out venues worldwide. You may actually recognize them from their performance in the popular movie Pitch Perfect 2. Now, more about Kevin specifically and why I wanted him to be on this show today... From an early age, Kevin began learning how to play the piano, the cello and the saxophone. He went to Yale where he was pre-med and also majored in East Asian studies. While he was there, he began developing this thing called Cello boxing and in 2001, he created a YouTube video that went viral about Cello boxing. He was featured on CBS, AOL, Huffington Post among many other websites. He was also named one of the 100 "History Makers in the Making" by NBC’s TheGrio and was hand selected by Quincy Jones to represent him in concert at the 2012 Montroe Jazz festival. Pentatonix was the first a cappella group to receive Forbes' 30 under 30 distinction. In fact, all five members made the list. Kevin is here with us today talking about how to break into the music world, how YouTube actually helped the group launch their careers. He also shares more about the disappointment that his parents experienced when they learned their son was not going to become a doctor and pursue a cappella and what he is learning from Quincy Jones, someone he considers to be his mentor. 358: Bing Chen, Digital Media Pioneer & Entrepreneur

E

Today on So Money millennial week we have a digital media pioneer and entrepreneur. He, like many of the others this week, is not even 30 yet. In 2014, Bing Chen was featured in Forbes' 30 under 30 in the Hollywood and Entertainment category. Now, Bing has quite the resume. He was once YouTube’s Global Head of Creator Development and Management where he spearheaded most of the platform’s early major acquisitions, development and promotional services, for its now 300 million creative artists globally. Today, he’s the co-founder of Victorious, a new media passion platform and new media content producer. I’m not really sure what that means so I ask him about that. He goes into a deep-dive about what he’s working on today and why it’s going to change the world. We also go back in time. You can tell right off the bat, he is hardwired differently. So, I want to know, what did he want to be when he was younger? Growing up who was his role model? You’re going to be surprised to hear what he has to say. Also we talk about the future of social media. Does YouTube have what it takes to remain the number one video platform? He also reminisces about getting hired by Google. Plus he shares what that interview process was like. You always hear all sorts of stories about the difficulty of getting jobs at big places like that. So Bing is going to take us behind the scenes - you’ll want to hear this story. For more information visit www.somoneypodcast.com.

Hosted on Acast. 356: Victoria Reitano, Digital Marketing Expert

I am very honored to dedicate this entire week to So Money millennials. We’ve done this before and it was very successful looking at some of the most remarkable young people in this country as they manage their money, careers and find their purpose in life. So, back by popular demand, we’re dedicating this entire week to those of us born in 1980 or after. For months, I have been searching and this week we have an incredible line up for you. Today, we have a young woman that I met about eight years ago. She had just graduated from college, had stars in her eyes and she reached out and said, “Hey, remember me?” Of course, I did. Victoria Reitano is now the CEO and lead consultant at her own company, CreatiVix Media, a digital agency based in New York City. It’s dedicated to making social media manageable for all. Her nickname is “Vix." The two of us actually met during one of my talks at Time Inc. way back when. 354: Natalie MacNeil, Creator of SheTakesOnTheWorld.com

Today’s guest is an Emmy award-winning media producer and pioneer for female entrepreneurs. I met her back when I was super pregnant. She's the author of two very successful books, most recently, "The Conquer Kit: A Creative Business Planner for Women Entrepreneurs" and "She Takes On the World: A Guide to Being Your Own Boss, Working Happy, and Living on Purpose." From Natalie, I learned where she invests her money, specific stocks and why. 352: Allison Task, Life Coach

I have a friend on the show today, Allison Fishman Task. She's a personal coach. Allison helps people move through life transitions. The majority of clients use Allison’s coaching to significantly change their careers, whether it’s moving up in their current role, starting their own business or finding a new, more meaningful job. She also works with parents-to-be and new parents as they prepare for the changes that come along with expanding a family. She knows this well - she is the mom to three children under the age of three. Can you believe it? She’s amazing. Allison received her coaching certificate from New York University. She also has a degree from Cornell in human development and family studies. Also, a fun fact about Allison... before coaching, she had another life in the culinary world. That’s how we met. She authored cookbooks and hosted culinary TV and web shows including TLC’s Home Made Simple and Lifetime’s Cook Yourself Thin. She also had a great show on Yahoo! called Blue Ribbon Hunter. Some take away with Allison, how she works with clients to help them transition to more meaningful place in their careers. She offers some case studies. 351: Joe Koss, Debt-Free College Professor

I decided to bring an avid listener from the podcast on today's show. He's been writing in, not just praising the show, but he has a really interesting story of his own about getting out of $50,000 worth of student loan debt. His name is Joe Koss. He is an accountant by trade and teaches as an adjunct professor at several colleges and universities on the topic of accounting and personal finance. Joe was once saddled with debt, a lot of it, everything from credit cards to auto and student loans. Most recently he had $50,000 in student loans and he worked to pay that off on time and as quickly as possible. He had about $28,000 left in that student loan figure and it was the biggest push he made to get rid of that in just 14 months. It turns out that teaching personal finance to a bunch of college students is what gave Joe the motivation ultimately to practice what he preached to his students. Some take away from our conversation with Joe. He shares the specific steps he took to get out of that $50,000 in student loans and why he was adamant about it. It wasn’t a very high interest rate, he was on a fixed payment plan. Why be aggressive with the student loans? How he budgets and it’s not very sophisticated but it works and the anonymous donation he gives to his students that’s helping them get a head start in life. 349: Sallie Krawcheck, Co-Founder of Ellevest

I'm honored to have a very special guest on the show today. This is someone I wanted to have on the show from before I was even live with So Money. I always had a running wish list of guests, and she was at the top. Now, she is here - Sallie Krawcheck. Do you know Sallie Krawcheck? If you don’t know Sallie Krawcheck, you need to know Sallie Krawcheck. Maybe if you don’t work in the world of finance, you don’t follow business news regularly, you may not have come across her name, but she is a force in this industry. Right now, she is the CEO and co-founder of Ellevest. Ellevest is a soon-to-be launched digital investment platform for women. To me, Sallie has always been the ultimate pioneer for closing the gender wage gap and women’s rights in the work place. With Ellevest, what she’s really trying to do is close the investment wage gap. Sallie is on a very public and professional mission right now to help women reach their financial and professional goals. She’s also the chair of Ellevate Network, a global professional women’s network with thousands of members and growing. I'm actually a member. Sallie serves as the chair of the PAX Elevate Global Woman’s Index Fund which she recently launched and invest in the top rated companies for advancing women. Now, before becoming an entrepreneur, she was the CEO of Merrill Lynch Wealth Management and Smith Barney. So, she knows a thing or two. We want to talk about the gender wage gap and how women invest differently. We also discuss her own financial failures because she’s had some. She is very generous with going down memory lane and giving us those stories to help us avoid the same mistakes. Ellevest is also a really exciting venture. She has a website for us that she mentions during the conversation that we can go to, to try it out and experience it firsthand. 348: Bobby Monks, Author of "UNINVE$TED"

Today’s guest is a serial entrepreneur. He founded, led and grew numerous businesses in the financial services, real estate, media and tech sectors. Robert or "Bobby" Monks as he goes by, is out with a new tell-all book. It’s called, "UNINVE$TED: How Wall Street Hijacks Your Money and How to Fight Back." It offers an interesting perspective considering Bobby worked in finance for almost his entire work life. So, in this book he is blowing the cover on how Wall Street works. He’s got a lot to say on the matter. The book is really a way to teach Americans on how financial firms and money managers on Wall Street are profiting from our ignorance by over complicating the investing system. Bobby talks about how the system is corrupt and what we can do to change it and he would know. He was once the chairman of Spinnaker Trust, managing over a $1 billion in asset so he’s had quite the perspective. With Bobby, we learn how to seek out a financial adviser who is working in your best interest and is affordable. How to negotiate with your financial adviser to lower his or her fees and the costly truth about 401(k)’s. 344: Michael Roderick, Former Broadway Producer & Entrepreneur

The show today is about your relationship strategy. You may have heard the expression, "You are the average of the 5 people you spend most of your time with." Think about that. Do you like these 5 people? Do they support you? Reciprocate the help and advice you give? Our guest today is an expert in helping people strategize relationship building. Michal Roderick is the CEO of Small Pond Enterprises LLC, a consulting company and educational resource for solopreneurs, entrepreneurs and intrapreneurs. I had to look up the word intrapreneur…it’s someone who works INSIDE a company who exhibits entrepreneurial qualities. Michael was once a high school teacher turned Broadway producer in less than two years. That experience led him to start an arts incubator program to teach fellow artists how to build and grow their own businesses. Eventually, he developed a workshop on networking which grew into a full-fledged consulting practice and that's how Small Pond Enterprises was born. 343: Jennefer Witter, PR Exec & Author, "Little Book of Big PR"

Today I have a longtime friend joining me on the show. I’ve known Jennefer Witter for at least 10 years. Jennefer is the CEO and founder of The Boreland Group, a national PR firm headquartered in New York City. It’s not often as journalist that you become friends with the publicist. The publicist who e-mail you, write to you, call you, grab you for five minutes at a conference to tell you about their company. I’m all for pitches. I love working with publicists for the most part. They are very helpful to me and instrumental in the work that I do. We wouldn’t have guests on this show if it wasn’t for the good work and the kind work of publicists who represent amazing people and amazing brands, but rarely do you actually befriend these people in your personal life where you actually go to dinners and you share personal stories. Jennefer and I really clicked way back when I was working at NY1. Initially, we started out as just business friends. We worked together, she sent me pitches, I had some of her guest on the show. So, long story short, we’ve been in touch for all of these years. Her business has exploded as well. She’s on the show today to share some of her lessons learned as well as her financial mindset and behaviors. How she has been able to build wealth while living here. Also, how, as a single female entrepreneur, she’s been able to build her business to the point where she was named one of the top 10 black CEO entrepreneurs in the country. She also has a book called, The Little Book of Big PR: 100 Plus Quick Tips to Grow Your Small Business. In addition to getting her clients on top national and regional platforms, she herself has been featured in Fast Company, Bloomberg, The Huffington Post and TheStreet.com. She’s also an advocate for women in business and serves as an active member of Elevate New York. 336: John Wasik, Author of "The Debt Free Degree"

It is college week on So Money! All week we’re dedicating the show to all aspects of college – How to afford it? How to pick the right school? How to dissect the financial aid process? Is college worth it? And much, much more. This concept of doing a themed week is thanks to you, by the way. I asked you a couple months back what types of changes or additions you would like to the show and some of you suggested themed weeks. I experimented with it last year with Millionaires Next Door Week and So Money Millennials Week. And they were very popular. I'm hoping to dedicate more of the podcast to these special deep-dive weeks. Kicking us off to educate us all on the best ways to afford college and how to steer clear of too much debt is the author of the new book "The Debt Free Degree: How to Eliminate College Debt At Every Step." John Wasik is an award-winning author of 15 books, speaker and journalist discussing financial topics from investing to student loans and more. John also serves as a personal finance columnist and blogger for Reuters. Prior to his current role he served as a former special projects editor for Consumers Digest magazine. Ladies and gentleman, this episode will forever be an absolute dream come true for me. The day that we had the Emmy Award-winning co-host of Lifetime’s mega-hit show Project Runway Tim Gunn. He’s also a New York Times best-selling author. Most recently he has an upcoming show debuting November 12 called Project Runway Junior. This show will focus on up and coming emerging young designers aged 13-17. Tim will co-host alongside super model Hannah Davis, Kelly Osborne, designer Christian Siriano and executive fashion editor at Cosmo and Seventeen Magazines, Aya Kanai. Be sure to tune in on Nov. 12 at 9p ET. Takeaways from our time together: How Tim didn’t get paid when Project Runway first launched (season 1 AND 2). Nada. Zilch. 317: Andrew Fiebert, Listen Money Matters Founder

Today's guest is the founder of Listen Money Matters, which is the “ultimate personal finance resource” as they call it on their website. Andrew Fiebert is also the host of the popular podcast operating under the same name. If you listen to this show and you love money and personal finance, I suspect you might know Andrew Fiebert’s voice and his show. You know, Andrew’s passion started with money when he took a job at an investment bank. And this bank no longer exists, the Lehman Brothers. There he was, a data engineer, right out of college. He became fascinated with getting the most out of his hard earned money and his wife, Laura, suggested that, “You know what Andrew? You should start a podcast.” She was onto something and here he is, hosting the show, working to educate the community that he’s created on personal finance. So naturally, I had to ask Andrew about the time that he worked at Lehman Brothers, the day specifically that it collapsed, what happened, what did he see, a scary time of course for everybody particularly for those working at the bank. And what happened on that infamous day. We talk about why he broke up with his original host of Listen, Money Matters, Matt Giovanisci. There are rumors and I wanted him to clear the air. What happened, why did you guys break up? Matt Giovanisci’s has been on this podcast. I didn’t asked him, but now I have Andrew on the call, I wanted to know what happened. Why are they no longer together? He’s never shared the story and he does with me. We also talk about taking Listen, Money Matters, which was a daily show to three days a week and now, to just one day per week. Can you imagine if So Money became one day a week? I don’t know if I could ever do that. I feel as though it would just be a show about nothing. I mean one is not enough but it’s proving to be just enough for him and his listeners. His audience really loves it. He hasn’t really noticed a falloff in listeners so kudos to him. I want to learn how he has managed to do that. 313: The Debt Free Guys, David Auten & John Schneider

We’ve got two wonderful guests today. A couple, in fact, David Auten and John Schneider, also known as the Debt Free Guys. They’re making headlines these days with their blog and coming out as financial leaders for their peers in the LGBT community. When John and David met, they were two guys living what seemed to be normal lives. They were in their 30’s, they were financial professionals but they also had $51,000 in combined credit card debt. So, in our conversation, we chat about how they got out of that debt, how for many years they’ve lived what they called a “double life," as two men who are fabulous, out partying, drive nice cars, have nice clothes, great jeans but secretly were saddled with over $50,000 in debt. And we also talk about the specific financial needs they’re recognizing amongst gay couples. We’ll also talk about wine. These guys are wine lovers, car lovers and so much more. David and John currently work in financial services but they plan to quit very soon to pursue their blog and speaking engagements full-time. 312: Joya Dass, Financial News Anchor

E

I have a question for you. How old were you when you discovered what you wanted to be in life when you were all grown up? I think I was maybe 11 or 12, I knew I wanted to go into news and journalism but then I got sidetracked and I did finance but hey, I found my way back. My guest today remembers vividly at three years old that she wanted to be a television anchor. And she did become a television anchor but it wasn’t without challenge. I first encountered Joya Dass when I was a graduate student interning at CNN. It was an incredible internship. I had a chance to go backstage at New York Fashion Week. I had a chance to work closely with some amazingly talented journalists and I got a chance to watch from the sidelines how anchors like Joya prepared for live shows and reported on stories from oil markets to student loans. Joya Dass is one of the first South Asian females to be seen on mainstream television in the United States. She’s been a business anchor for major networks for the last 15 years including CNN as well as ABC and Bloomberg and right now, she’s on the New York Stock Exchange floor every day for NY1 News and CBS. I just watched her give an incredible TED talk called Rethinking Failure, which we dive into on this podcast. We talk about what made her want to do that and the struggles that she had growing up in her family. In 2014, Joya was named the executive director of the South Asian International Film Festival presented by HBO. She also helms a documentary production company bearing her name. Joya is currently running a woman’s networking initiative called LadyDrinks. It champions the South Asian female entrepreneur. You want to listen to this interview because we talk about Joya’s determination with a capital D. That time in college for example when she went to the bursar’s office and the financial aid officer told her that no one had paid her tuition bill and she was not allowed to come back to school and she said, “Well actually, I’m going to figure this out” and so at the ripe age of I don’t know, maybe 19 or 20, she figured out a way to pay her own way through college. We also talk about the entrepreneurial path of journalist today, why you need to think outside the box. If you want to be a TV anchor maybe you want to be TV anchor and other things because there’s not, as it used to be, a direct path to getting on television and being on television frankly isn’t the end all anymore.
