459: Lauren Greutman, "The Recovering Spender" Author
Ever feel the uncontrollable urge to spend? I used to do this very expensive thing in college as a way to distract myself from studying. I would go to the 24 hour market below my dorm that sold all sorts of things - food, clothes, accessories, etc. And I would usually buy something. I was killing time by spending money. I was too scared to face my homework so I did the irrational and spent. I spent with emotion. And thousands of credit card dollars later, I had to find a way to get myself out of debt as a new college graduate. Yay! Today's guest is a recovering spender who, along with her husband, found herself in $40,000 worth of debt. Lauren Greutman is here and she wants to help people going through the same situation. She has a new book coming out soon that you can pre-order now, The Recovering Spender: How to Live a Happy, Fulfilled, Debt-Free Life. In the book, Lauren shares advice on how to curb spending habits and how to get out of debt. We face a lot of financial pressures in today's world, so she talks about that, too. Lauren and her husband Mark actually joined me on So Money before... they were episode 58 so go back and take a listen if you may have missed that one. There's additional takeaways in that episode about how they got themselves back on track financially and why it's still important to enjoy your money sometimes. He spiraled out of control, losing his apartment and living on the streets for a year. After his friend intervened, he attended the Hazelden Foundation in Minnesota. He began washing dishes at a restaurant as he worked through his sobriety. One day when a line cook didn't show up for his shift, Andrew took over his station and within seven weeks was named Executive Chef. Sometimes in life a little voice inside tells you, “You need to quit your job immediately, effective now and take on a brand new path.” Today's guest, Wendell Potter, is someone who lived that. 415: Adam and Sheila Torabi, Farnoosh's Parents
This interview today that you’re about to hear is an experience I will never forget. I’m actually surprised that it took me this long to bring my parents onto the show. They have been one of my biggest supporters since day one but particularly with this podcast. They knew how much it meant to me. They listen every day and give me feedback. They’re my biggest fans. We talk about it on the show so often that who we are as people, especially when it comes to our values, perspectives and emotions around money, stem from childhood and often how our parents communicated over money and interacted with money. So I talk about all of that with Adam and Sheila Torabi. In Farsi or in Persian, they're known as [Pharog] and [Shayda], but they changed their names. I finally get to the bottom of this in our official podcast interview today and it was a blast going all "Barbara Walters" on them. I didn’t let them off the hook. I asked them why they fought about money when I was a kid because that’s the sort of stuff that really sticks with you for life, right? I was a little scared to ask that question because I’m sure it brings up as many emotions for them, as it does for me. But I really wanted to know, and more importantly, how did they reconcile those differences? And of course, we’ll talk about their immigration and the importance of education. My dad just got laid off, believe it or not, at 62. How’s he dealing with that? All that and more plus my mom’s number one tip for a lasting marriage. My parents are celebrating their 38th anniversary this August. For more information visit www.somoneypodcast.com.

Hosted on Acast. 414: Maya Penn, Teen TED Talker & Entrepreneur
Maya Penn is just 16 years old and has accomplished a lot already. She has probably done more in her life thus far than I have done in my 36 years and I would guess, more than a lot of us have done in our lives. She's an incredible inspiration, to not just people her age, but people of all ages.. She is many things -- an artist, entrepreneur, philanthropist, environmental activist, speaker, author, animator and coder. I discovered in interviewing her that she is home schooled, so that helps with giving her the time and the flexibility to pursue all of these things. But it’s not just the flexibility of her school schedule that has awarded her of all this successes, she is an instigator, visionary and she’s not afraid to be afraid. Maya started her own company, Maya's Ideas, at just 8 years old and then went on to create an eco-friendly clothing and accessory brand where she donates 10-20% of her profits to local and global charities. This also inspired her to start her own non-profit, Maya's Ideas 4 The Planet, where she works to give back to girls in developing countries. Maya is also the youngest person to give back-to-back TED Talks, three in total. Her latest TEDWomen Talk received over 1.2 million views and is one of the top 15 TEDWomen talks of all time. She's out with a new book titled You Got This!: Unleash Your Awesomeness, Find Your Path, And Change Your World where she's sharing an inspirational and innovative blueprint for teens and young adults to help them maximize their full potential. I'm so excited for today's guest. She's a writer, photographer and world traveler. Wendy Simmons is out with a new book that you should run -- not walk -- tomorrow to go get a copy after you listen to this podcast. It's about her vacation in North Korea. Yes, I know what you're thinking... how does one even travel there? Why would one vacation there? There's so many questions. But the book is called My Holiday in North Korea: The Funniest/Worst Place on Earth. Wendy also has a weekly travel column featured on the Huffington Post and has written for other outlets including Yahoo!, PopSugar, Travel and Leisure among many others. Wendy's photographs have also been featured in numerous exhibitions and shows across the country and have even earned her accolades. She's also switched careers several times serving as the president of Vendeloo, a consultancy she founded in 2001, working as the Chief Brand Officer of a NYC-based global eyewear brand and owner of a bar in Manhattan. So, in the interview we discuss, how did she decide to go to North Korea? Why, really? What were her expectations going into the country and were they met? Would she recommend you and I go to North Korea and if so, what should we take with us? Wendy is also an entrepreneur. We transition nicely to talk about money. We talk about learning about money as she lived in a neighborhood that was pretty wealthy. Why she says she doesn’t really think about money. She doesn’t want to think about money and her number one financial failure, which perhaps not surprisingly, involved the stock market.
