275: Jess Chan — Breaking Up with Your Toxic Business
Do you have a bad relationship with your business? Is it time to get out? Today’s guest has some insight and some answers on when it’s really time to call it quits before you get burned out. Jess Chan is the Founder & CEO of Longplay, a full-service email marketing agency for DTC e-commerce brands. At Longplay, Jess has helped brands increase email revenue by 639% within 90 days and increase average order value by over 67%. Jess has been featured in Entrepreneur, Influencer Hustle & Thought Catalog. Jess has a background in actuarial science and economics but was going through panic attacks and an identity crisis on where, and who, she truly wanted to be in life. She knew insurance wasn’t the answer. On a whim, an ecommerce brand that Jess liked had a job opening for a marketing assistant, so she applied and ended up getting the job with zero qualifications! After college, she got offered a promotion to run a multimillion-dollar ecommerce company. Jess sees it all the time with her clients when they're starting a new company. We lose ourselves in the business. We come from a mission-centric place, but as we begin to grow, we start to lose ourselves and we go further and further away from our core mission. As founders, our business is an identity for us. We take a piece of ourselves and try to create something great out of it, but as the business scales and grows, it’s important to take care of your mental health, take breaks, and consciously redefine our relationship with it. Tuesday’s Tips — How to Tackle That Difficult Conversation
Do you have a difficult conversation coming up? Perhaps there's a conversation that's long overdue? How do you approach it? Bill has some thoughts and tip on how to gracefully navigate those rough talks in this week's episode! One of Bill's clients, Alex, had to have a conversation with his board about budget issues. He just knew that his board would not be happy by this news and was dreading the conversation. Bill decided to take some pressure off of his plate by doing a series of role plays to help Alex accurately prepare for a wide range of emotions. The result? Alex felt comfortable when the conversation was going badly with Bill and could still keep his mind and his points on track. Bill was a tough fictional board member! In one instance, Bill just flat out said 'no' to whatever proposal Alex threw at him. This led Alex to get creative with his requests. By the end of the session, Alex felt more confident about the upcoming conversation. The fundamental lesson here is to roleplay! Play with the fear! Go through different scenarios and see what fits you best. You'll be surprised by the end-result after it's all over. Tuesday’s Tips — The Right Kind of Attention
Need more eyes on your business? We all understand the power of having something go viral, but where business owners fall short is that they are willing to do anything, no matter the costs, to get that attention. Here’s how you can be strategic in your quest for more attention and get the right kind of attention. Why is it that Elon Musk comes out with a cyber truck and the world stops and goes absolutely crazy? Why is it that, when SingularityU came out, it became a sold-out event almost instantly? How do these things happen so “easily”? Moral value and positive value are of no interest to the media. So what gets their intention? Novelty. Shock also adds value. If you can grab attention for your product in a new way, then the media will be ready to pounce. What are some of the ways you can grab the attention of the media? What’s your novelty angle for your product? In this Tuesday Tip, Bill breaks down how some of the greats were able to make their events/products go viral. 273: Paul Brown — How to Attract Lifetime Customers
It can be difficult to hang on to your loyal customers as you begin to scale and grow, especially if you plan to increase your prices. Today’s guest knows a thing or two about keeping customers for life, no matter the circumstances. Paul Brown is the creator and writer of the What’s Offline column, which is featured every Saturday in the business section of The New York Times. He and his wife also wrote the Dream Home Diaries blog, also featured on nytimes.com. When he is not writing for the Times, Paul, a former contributing editor to M.I.T.’s Sloan Management Review, serves as an editorial consultant. He has worked with everyone from individuals to Fortune 500 companies and leading academic institutions such as NYU, in developing products that have ranged from software programs and videos to op-ed pieces, TED talks, books, and more. He also had his own twice-weekly blog in Forbes, Inc. Magazine, and The Harvard Business Review. Paul accidentally stumbled into writing for Forbes. His trick was to just ask as many questions as you can, and eventually, you’ll learn something. Fast forward to today, Paul has written several books, including Customer for Life, which was first published in 1990. At the time, there weren’t many books out that thought about the customer in this particular way. Paul co-wrote the book with a car dealership owner, Carl Sewell. They both realized that they had a very short attention span, which is why the book is structured in a quick and easy way for readers to process. People tend to gloss over customer service as a business strategy. Everyone sees the value of turning a one-time customer into a lifelong customer, but a tangible and tactic strategy that makes it easy to execute on is much less talked about in business. If a customer asks for something unusual, it’s your job as a service provider to deliver on it. Good customer service often looks like this. Paul shares an example of a customer asking for something somewhat ridiculous and out of the box, but by delivering on her ask, the company ended up gaining a lifetime customer. Tuesday’s Tips — Accomplish Extraordinary Things
Is there someone on your team trying to sell you on why they haven’t been hitting their numbers? Or are you trying to sell yourself on why you can’t achieve certain KPIs? If that’s the case, then this episode is for you! How do people accomplish extraordinary things when it doesn’t look or sound very reasonable? Bill was working with a cancer survivor who was passionate about creating healthy meals for restaurants. While she was in the middle of growing her business, she found out her cancer came back. Ouch. How do you keep going when you have a health crisis? Bill knew her mission in life, and he knew as her coach, he couldn’t let her quit. She couldn’t quit. Yet, how do you prevail when you have odds, especially health odds, stacked against you? In circumstances like this, you have to use your team and your leaders more than you ever did before. You have to do that scary thing and delegate. Bill’s client knew that her project was important, and she went on to finish what she had set out to do; not by herself, but by leveraging the power of her team. She created a legacy for herself and didn’t let obstacles stop her from moving forward. Anchor yourself to possibility and your legacy, and when obstacles get in your way, get creative and solve for one problem at a time. 272: Scaling Up Insights — Coach Panel with Liat Lazar, Kristin McLane, and Daniel Marcos.
There’s a lot to cover on this week’s Scaling Up Insights show! We have two returning guest panelists, Liat Lazar and Daniel Marcos, and a new panel guest, Kristin McLane, a 25-year veteran in the computer manufacturing software space. Kristin notes that people are 60X more likely to remember something if it’s in the form of a picture. Bill agrees and this visualization exercise has helped him and his clients. Daniel would find certain staff members doodling in his meeting, which would often offend him until later he realized they were the people who remembered the most about that meeting. They were getting much better results! Does the American dream still exist? Daniel still believes so. Yes, some communities have it harder than others, but with a good mindset, anything is possible and you can overcome it. Just look at the power of social media. We are no longer confined by borders and it doesn’t matter what country you’re in, you can add value no matter your geographical location through the power of the internet. Liat agrees. As coaches, it’s our job to change CEO’s and executive management’s stories. Coaches help people change the “old” narrative, and to help them see what’s possible. Kristin is fascinated by the Olympics right now. You see what 10,000 hours can do, and these athletes prepared all their life for this one event. For the entrepreneur, that one event is not always so cut and dry, or clear, but they’re always working on it for a brighter future. Tuesday’s Tips — Not Good Enough?
Do you sometimes feel defeated and like you’re never going to be good enough? Are you worried that you’ll never truly measure up and enjoy the success you do have? Bill can relate. He was the same way! He felt that maybe “one day” he’ll be done. Until something clicked in place for him. He noticed a highly skilled expert completely and royally screw up. Wasn’t he supposed to be the guy who knew all the answers? That’s when Bill realized, maybe, he’d never truly be finished in the work he was set out to do. Maybe it’s a journey, not a destination. At first, Bill was depressed, but he was able to find enlightenment and really believe and enjoy the process a lot more than just trying to be “done” all the time! We’re all working on skills. We are all working on ourselves. Our work never really is done. Getting Real with Anastasia Leng — CreativeX
In this week’s episode of Getting Real, we learn about an entrepreneur and her journey towards working with some of the world’s leading companies and how she provides intentional and measurable creativity. Anastasia Leng is the Founder & CEO of CreativeX, an automated creative excellence platform that aims to showcase creative expression through the clarity of data. CreativeX is used globally by Fortune 500 brands like Heineken, Nestle, Unilever, and Facebook to measure creativity efficiency, consistency, and impact across their content. We are producing more content than we ever have before. What used to be easily managed by a team of people can no longer be done at scale. This is where the power of AI and data comes in. Anastasia leverages AI to help build a consistent tone of voice and image throughout a brand. There are a lot of “little” things you must think about and it’s impossible to do this at scale, especially when there are cross-departmental teams to consider. Things like brand consistency, creative quality, and accurate representation are all important factors at play. AI brings these important data points together to ensure a brand is producing the right creative message at all times. Anastasia learned from her previous startup that imagery and video were important to brands, but she couldn’t figure out what made certain videos click, and why others would fall short. She realized her company was running out of time and money, so she had to get smart. This is where the seed got planted and how CreativeX was eventually born. 271: Deborah Westphal — Let’s Build a Human-Centric Future
What is a human-centric business? For business owners that want to scale and grow, they have to move away from a purely systems and process structure and focus on the human element. The biggest resource drain in any organization is its people. They are hard to predict, and sometimes difficult to manage. Today’s guest has some insights on how to position yourself for an uncertain future. Deborah Westphal’s career spans more than 30 years and she has worked closely with government agencies and Fortune 100 companies on virtually every continent. In 1999, Alvin Toffler tapped her as one of the founding members of his eponymous consulting firm. A passionate humanist and life-long learner, she has guided leaders to challenge biases, ignite ideas, and build resilience for a secure future for organizations including Lockheed Martin, Marriott, the U.S. Air Force, Bayer, Microsoft, NASA, and more. Deborah grew up working with her hands and fixing things, whether that be houses or cars. This sparked a love for building things and she knew she wanted to be an engineer of some kind when she grew up. Her path led her to the Air Force, an organization that she dedicated 13 years to, and then she became passionate about the business of making things. Through Deborah’s findings, she decided to write a book with the premise of exploring how organizations have been built over the last few decades. There has always been a priority on efficiency and effectiveness, but the human element seemed to have slipped by the wayside. Although that might have worked a few decades ago, with the rapid pace of our technology, leaders are faced with unique challenges and it requires more than streamlined efficiency to solve those challenges. If anything, our current working model is broken and we need to embrace a new era of business: the human side. Tuesday’s Tips — Life’s Out of Whack
Are you feeling a little out of whack right now? Are you not quite sure what’s going on but you just feel “off”? Leaders go through these phases all the time. Here’s how you can get back on track. Bill was working with a franchise client and it was apparent that this entrepreneur had her plate full. Not only did she have children and an ex-husband, but she had hobbies and activities and outside passions. All good things! But, they were draining her. This is where a life purpose comes in handy. When you have a clearer vision for your overall life, you can be really particular about what types of quality things you want to pursue and do in your life. If you have a task that you aren’t passionate about doing, it’s important to find a new “why” so that you can change the narrative on the thing you hate and turn it into something you end up loving and can’t wait to do. This positive psychology trick is so powerful in helping you find joy in your life again! Getting Real with Ankur Agarwal — Clarion Technologies
In this Getting Real episode, Bill and his guest dive into the intersection of people and process, and how you can leverage this power so that you can scale and grow! This week’s guest is Ankur Agarwal! He is an active Angel Investor and the CEO of Clarion Technologies, a company he co-founded in the early 2000s. Today, Clarion has over 400 employees and over 1,000 clients across the world. Ankur is passionate about supporting entrepreneurs, and through his Angel Fund and Incubator, has invested in multiple companies including food startups, e-commerce companies, social ventures, and more. Ankur provides a bridge to highly skilled talent in India for companies that might not need a full-time in-house employee just yet. The great part about Ankur’s company and process is that you have a dedicated team member that you can work with regularly, and you are able to put a name to a face. The biggest challenge Ankur faced at the beginning of his entrepreneurial career was in 2002. He and his wife were looking for jobs, they were completely broke and on the verge of being homeless, and despite their best efforts, no one was hiring. Pushed into a corner, Ankur had to get creative. Ankur’s struggles paid off; after five years of scrapping for small gig after small gig, Ankur was able to turn his business into a $5 million company. During this time, Ankur never really had that “big break”; it was an accumulation of small habits and clients that lead to bigger opportunities over time. 270: Josh Linkner — Big Little Breakthroughs
There’s a lot of pressure to innovate and break through ceilings. It’s not always easy, and it can be a double-edged sword. You put too much stress on it and you won’t be able to create. Put too little emphasis on it and there’s no direction. Where’s the fine balance? Today’s guest has ways to make this process easier! Josh Linkner started his career as a jazz guitarist, which has been a foundational piece to his extensive experience in creativity, entrepreneurship, and disruptive innovation. He is the Founder and CEO of five tech companies, which have sold for a combined value of over $200 million. What does Josh mean by achieving “big little” breakthroughs? Is that even possible? The concept of this is to flip innovation on its head. We often think innovation means big breakthroughs that change the world. Uber, Google, Airbnb, all come to mind. However, what we often don’t see are the tiny micro-steps that lead us there. Instead of cultivating wildly risky “moonshots,” why not just start small? You can work on little innovations every day, which then lead to big breakthroughs over time. Baby ideas are also way less risky and more accessible for your team to do. There isn’t a pressure to “perform” or to “think creatively” when you just start small. Like those big tech giants, most of us cannot make a billion-dollar bet. A Harvard study showed that 77% of the U.S. gross domestic product comes from big little breakthroughs. Don’t let the news headlines fool you into thinking everyone is achieving big “aha” moments! It’s only a small percentage. Interview Links: Sponsored by: Bit.ly/clariontech Joshlinkner.com Josh on LinkedIn Resources: Scaling Up Workshop: Interested in attending one of our workshops? Tuesday’s Tips — Your Next Steps
Do you find it hard to make a decision or to stick with the same course of action over time? If you’re on the fence, Bill has some quick tips to help you commit and move forward. Bill was working with a client that constantly had other things on his mind and these thoughts kept spinning off into other thoughts and action steps. Bill noticed that he’d come in sudo-commiting to a plan and then the next shiny object had his eye. A lot of leaders have some form of ADHD. We’re always getting our attention pulled in different directions, but if you don’t commit yourself, you’ll constantly be the dog chasing its tail. Bill helped his client lock things in and focus. One of the best ways he was able to do that was through making an outloud statement and commitment to his team so that everyone could be held accountable and moving forward. 269: Carol Sanford — How to Create a Responsible Business
Why does responsibility matter? Why should there be balance? Why is all of this even important? Today’s guest has some answers and suggestions on how you can become a more responsible business. Carol Sanford is an award-winning Business Educator, Summit Producer, Podcaster, and Author. She is a regularly recognized thought leader and has worked alongside Fortune 500 companies like Google, DuPont, Intel, P&G, and more over the last four decades. When Carol went to Berkeley, a man named Thomas Kuhn opened her up to a whole new world of different perspectives. Combining this with the memorable moments Carol spent with her grandparents, who were half Mohawk and lived off the land, Carol saw how one tiny change could create drastic impacts. Carol decided to take what she learned from Thomas and create a framework that would help you see what kind of paradigm you were living under, understand the impacts of that paradigm, and work on ways you can change it for the better. Although Carol wrote her book, The Responsible Business, nearly 15 years ago, the book is going through a re-release right now, the core of that book dives into helping corporations (and nonprofits) understand that the way they run the business is changing and affecting the lives of everyone who buys and interacts with them. It’s not just about profit or growth or teams, it’s so much more than that. Getting Real with Mark Colgan — Speak On Podcasts
Today’s Getting Real episode is all podcast guest booking, when it makes sense to start a podcast, and of course, it highlights this entrepreneur’s journey, how he got into this space, and some of his challenges. Mark Colgan is an Entrepreneur and Revenue Leader responsible for increasing revenue across a small portfolio of companies where he leverages his 13 years’ experience in B2B Sales, Marketing, and Recruitment. Mark started his career in a sales role and grew his career path into interviewing candidates and pitching them to open roles as a recruitment consultant. Mark grew up in a very traditional household and was determined to follow the same path. After a few years in corporate, Mark decided to take a leap year, but by luck or fate, people were still knocking on his door asking him for work. He discovered that he could do exactly what he was doing before, just remotely, with fewer hours, and for more money. It’s been a dream ever since. Mark shares a little bit about his business model and why he’s different. When it comes to podcast guest booking agencies, Mark sees his clients as an extension of their brand, so it’s important that they get the pitch right. Bill agrees, he gets cold pitches all the time and rarely accepts because it’s not on brand with his podcast. The value in the service he provides is in the human touch and providing a relative service for both the podcast host and the guest speaker. There are a million podcasts out there. Bill believes it’s important to be a guest on a hundred podcasts first before creating your own show. 268: Michael Cardamone — Creative Ways to Fund Your SaaS Company
If you are a Founder of a SaaS company then this is an episode you do not want to miss. Today’s guest works directly with SaaS companies and knows the inner workings of how to raise the capital you need in your business. Michael Cardamone was one of the first 30 employees at Box in a BD role and then later led partnerships at AcademixDirect. After six years of being in operating roles, Michael launched Forum Ventures, a BSB SaaS-Focused Accelerator and Fund based in NYC and Toronto. Michael is seven years into his company and he’s already on his fourth fund for the accelerator and has worked with over 200 companies. Some of Michael’s entrepreneurs have never even stepped into Silicon Valley and have raised several millions of dollars. The VC landscape is rapidly changing to find companies outside of California and New York. Michael sees the benefits, too. You want more diversity? Take advantage of the global landscape and hire team members from all over the world to get a different cultural perspective. Countless studies have shown that when a company has more diversity, they are adaptable and more empathic to all different types of users. One thing that founders don’t think about enough is how will investors value your business? What is their process and how do you fare in that process? A great way to make yourself stand out is to bring data points and market research to the fold to showcase how you’re thinking about your target market differently and the types of risks you foresee in your industry. Investors love to see a bit of legwork being done, even if the memo isn’t all roses and positive. 267: Heather Hansen — The Art of Asking for What You Want
If you don’t ask, you don’t receive, but there’s an eloquent way of asking in order for you to have it all. It first starts with being an advocate for yourself and your needs. You are your own best advocate and today’s guest will show you how to get exactly what you ask for. Heather Hansen is a Lawyer, Self-Advocacy Expert, Coach, Author, and sought-after international speaker. She’s also the Founder and CEO of Advocate to Win, a consulting business where she’s given thousands of clients the knowledge and tools they need to become better advocates and gain support and engagement for their big ideas. Still an active lawyer, Heather was named one of the top female attorneys in Pennsylvania and she represented doctors, nurses, and hospitals throughout her career. The reason why she was so good at what she does was that she helped teach her clients how to be advocates for themselves. However, throughout Heather’s career, although she was good at advocating for others, she wasn’t the best at advocating for herself. Little did she know at the time, everyone is an advocate. If you’re selling, marketing, and/or leading, you’re an advocate. When it comes to building credibility, it’s a three-part process. It starts with trusting yourself, believing in yourself, and collecting the data needed to build your case to rally those around you. Heather cautions people about faking it till you make it because people can often see right through that. Tuesday’s Tips — Struggling to Find Happiness?
Are you suffering through some circumstances right now that you can’t seem to get out of? Are you feeling really frustrated? It sucks to be going through this in the moment, but the good news is, there is a solution. You can find a way out of this. When Bill turned 40, he found himself in a unique place. He had everything he wanted, he had accomplished a lot in his life at that time, yet, why was he so unhappy? Why was he suffering? He felt trapped by his circumstances. The first thing Bill did was to take stock and recognize he wasn’t happy. Then, he re-examined his life. He started at the root. He looked at his relationship with his family, with his parents, with his siblings, and what his life had brought him at key points in his life. He uncovered something interesting. Bill knew he was a natural leader, he was smart, he knew he had qualities that not many could beat. However, he could always find someone else who was slightly better than him. This comparison completely stole his joy. It felt like everything he achieved up until that point, was failing. When the reality was, it wasn’t. 266: Scaling Up Insights — Coach Panel with Dominic Monkhouse and Daniel Marcos
There’s a lot to cover in this week’s Scaling Up Insights show! We have two returning guests, Dominic Monkhouse and Daniel Marcos. Both of these growth coaches talk about what’s on their summer reading list, understanding customer and employee data, and inflation making a comeback! All this and more, in today’s episode. Bust Buy’s Turnaround time really is a gift of wonders. Daniel shares an example of why he chose them over Amazon for a particular retail purchase. He was amazed! In and out in less than five minutes and he didn’t even have to leave his car. The future truly is wonderful. People are so quick to blame Amazon for disrupting and ruining other industries. Best Buy said no, it’s not Amazon’s fault. It’s ours. It’s our lack of execution that’s put us in this position. When they took ownership of their own shortcomings, they were able to innovate greatly, and you also kind of have COVID-19 to thank for that, too. Dominic is surprised we still have poor customer service issues in 2021. Some people just hate human beings. Dominic sat down with his wife at a cafe. They overheard the wait staff complaining about them for ordering only two things. Why are you here? When it comes to employee motivations, you can’t hire a motivational speaker to excite and entice your staff. Daniel believes you either create a company that gets them motivated, or you face the consequences of selling a product no one cares about. Tuesday’s Tips — In a Rut?
Are you feeling a bit off right now? Or maybe you’ve felt a little “blah” in the past and you’ve slowly gotten yourself out of it, but you’ve always wondered how did you get into that place in the first place? Bill’s got a tip for you. Bill had a client come to him during a team coaching session and he admitted he was feeling kind of off. It was like, overnight, he lost his passion and he wanted out. Bill spent some time listening to him and he could tell this was just a feeling he was going through at the moment. It wasn’t a core belief he had rooted into. When this happens to Bill’s coaching clients, it’s really helpful to take a minute to work backward and reflect when you started feeling this way. You can do this by yourself or have a partner help you through this reflection period. Ask yourself the question, “When was I feeling okay? And when did this feeling shift?” The answers might not come to you right away but trust the process. There was a moment that made you switch from feeling great about your business to feeling meh about it. Did you have some intentions or expectations that didn’t go according to plan? Did you just not get what you wanted? Are you a little irritated? When did you start just “going through the motions”? Getting Real with René Serbon — Dermal Systems Inc.
This week’s exciting entrepreneur is René Serbon! She is an International Skin Expert and Aesthetician. She helps people grow their skin business in a unique way and René consults fellow Aestheticians, Physicians, and Dermatologists to become confident and profitable entrepreneurs. René not only helps her clients grow, but she also provides additional education on the latest skin treatments, products, and procedures. Her business serves two-fold, both as an education and consulting business as well as a distribution business. René has always had an entrepreneurial spirit. She begged her parents to homeschool her, and when they did, she set up a small clothing shop on the side. She grew up in a very medical-centric family, and decided to follow in her family’s footsteps (somewhat). When René stepped into the skin and beauty world, she got bit by the bug. She loved helping people feel confident. She could see in real-time the difference she was making in people’s lives and she didn’t want to stop! You might think bad skin is such a superficial thing and what’s on the inside matters. That’s true. However, bad skin, bad teeth, or some sort of unique “human issue” really can wreak havoc on an individual’s confidence. It might seem small, but René has personally witnessed people’s personalities blossom just by healing their skin. 265: Jennifer Hudye — Craft Your Vivid Vision
A vision is critical to your success, but how do you go about creating one? What pieces should you include and not include? This week’s guest has some answers for you today! Jennifer Judye is the Founder and CEO of Conscious Copy & Co. where they help entrepreneurs communicate their vision and message in a way that inspires people to action. Jennifer and her team have supported hundreds of entrepreneurs through the Vivid Vision process (created by Cameron Herold), which helps entrepreneurs attract top talent, align their team, create key partners and vendors, and stay focused and motivated. Jennifer was at a business dinner and randomly sat at Cameron Herold’s table. After speaking with him, she decided to read his book and craft a vivid vision for her new copywriting company. She wrote down big names in the industry that she would love to work with, and it actually came true! The way Jennifer views a “Vivid Vision.” It’s like a sales page for your future. Cameron noticed that some of his clients were getting stuck in writing this vision down, and asked her to help his clients work on this critical piece. She agreed, and the rest is history! One of the questions Jennifer likes to ask her clients is, “Do you really want this?” and “If this all comes true, would you love it?” She wants her clients to be aware of the golden jail cell and avoid it at all costs. Tuesday’s Tips — Aligning Purpose with Work and Play
Is your work going well, but the rest of your life is in disarray? Are you missing some play or some fun in your life? Do you feel like you have no balance happening right now? Bill has found himself in a very similar position. He was making some progress in the business, but he wasn’t enjoying himself. He wasn’t having fun; things were just off for him. His life could easily be categorized into two buckets: Things he was supposed to do and the things he actually enjoyed doing. Neither of these activities overlapped with each other. Here’s the thing, if you are able to get your passions, your play, your purpose, and fulfillment all into alignment, not only is it possible, it’s magical once you do. Can you find a way to integrate all these things into one? The answer is a yes, it just might take a bit of creative tweaking to get it all there. Getting Real with Neel Parekh — MaidThis
In this week’s Getting Real episode, we have Neel Parekh, who is the founder of MaidThis Franchise, which helps homeowners and short-term rental hosts with their cleanings. We’ll learn why he quit his corporate job to start his own business and some of the biggest challenges he’s faced thus far. Neel had the idea of his business slightly over seven years ago. He wanted his business to be fully remote so that he could travel and see more of the world. Fast-forward to today, he has generated millions in revenue while having a fully remote team and wants to help other people achieve the same. Prior to starting his business, Neel worked in venture capital and private investing. However, he always had a travel bug in him and he wanted to create something that could fit more into his lifestyle. He also wanted to find a way to support his parents, or have them work with him on this business, remotely. These were his big two “whys” for starting the business. MaidThis now covers all of Greater Los Angeles, the Bay Area, and at the end of 2020, they launched their first branch location in Denver, Colorado. Neel is now focused on growing the franchise model out and getting branch owners to provide the same high-level quality he has been doing in California. 264: Andrew Bartlow — How to Prioritize Your People During Times of High Growth
With over 25 years of human resources and talent management experience at organizations, this week’s guest shares some of the people-centric activities you need to focus on to achieve high growth. Andrew Bartlow leads Series B Consulting, a firm that helps companies build their people strategy and accelerate their growth. He is also the Founder of People Leader Accelerator, which is a development program for startup HR leaders, and the co-author of Scaling for Success. Andrew used to be a bit self-conscious when it came to telling people he worked in HR. He found out that not a lot of people knew exactly what that meant and that it had a negative connotation around it. HR goes beyond employee relations and payroll. Andrew would often tell people he was in management consulting because that’s how the best companies approach it. What inspired Andrew to write his book? Well, everyone has a book inside of them, but Andrew saw a huge gap in the market in the startup ecospace. There are a lot of companies that are seeing a lot of success in spite of themselves. Andrew wanted to help them optimize their HR work so that it would not become a case of just dumb luck. CEOs and Founders are often hesitant to share their top-level plans down to the organization. In an environment where startups are often resource-starved in the beginning, it can be hard for leadership to make the commitment and stick to it in an uncertain future, but everyone needs a vision before they begin to do deep work. Tuesday’s Tips — 10X is Easier Than 2X
Have you been struggling to grow your business? You’d love to double your revenue, but you can’t seem to figure out what’s moving, or not moving the needle? Bill and his wife ran a business together a few years back and he found himself in the same situation. They’d go up some months, and then down some other months. All they wanted to do was double their business, yet they were stuck! Back to the drawing board, Bill and his wife came up with a couple of things that ended up making a huge difference. The first one was the BHAG and the second was the vivid vision. Through their BHAG, they were able to see a 10X future for themselves. By going through this mental exercise, they could see some bigger picture strategies they could be doing today, instead of being “in the weeds” trying to 2X. Your personal brand is everything and you can use your personality, your voice, to enhance your business brand and get more out of life. Today’s guest showcases why and how PR is the way to go to hit the next step in your business! Victoria Kennedy is the CEO of Victorious PR, a media agency that helps Entrepreneurs, Real Estate Brokerages, Mortgage Companies, and Solar Businesses get featured in industry-specific publications, local press, podcasts, and top publications to be seen as Industry Leaders in their fields. Growing up, Victoria wanted to be an opera singer and she even had a number one hit single in Europe! Victoria was heavily pitching editors and TV producers to get her music out there, and that’s where she discovered she had a PR talent. Unfortunately, Victoria’s European visa did not renew and she had to find another way to make a living back home in the U.S. Victoria had dedicated her whole life to singing; she didn’t have any other skills. She was dirt poor and realized that she could go all-in in her business. She took a course, and within the first month, she made her money back. When the pandemic happened. Victoria’s real estate marketing business took a big hit, so she had to pivot. She knew that her clients needed her more than ever, so she went to the largest real estate magazine in the world, and in 60 days she became their brand ambassador, a contributor, and was asked to speak at their event. PR opens so many doors for you if you know how to do it correctly! 262: Scaling Up Insights — Coach Panel with Max Kozlovsky and Daniel Marcos
Today in Scaling Up Insights, we have returning panelist Daniel Marcos, and a new panelist, Max Kozlovsky, a business consultant with more than 20 years of experience working with Fortune 100 and Fortune 500 Companies. In a recent article by Marc Benioff, he recommends using an off-site ranch to conduct culture-building activities for his Salesforce office. Daniel loves the idea and actually conducts a lot of his quarterly planning sessions in Mexico. Getting “out” really gets the creative juices flowing. Daniel doesn’t have an office space anymore, but it’ll be great to have a little meeting room space where he and his team could meet once a week or so if needed. Max himself bought a house to specifically use for team training. It’s incredibly convenient to have. Both Max and Daniel have noticed that real estate is becoming such a booming commodity, with Daniel unable to see any houses for sale in San Antonio, Texas, and some of Max’s friends in Austin, Texas were bidding 10% over asking price and still not getting their dream home. Elon Musk on SNL! Bill thought it was quite awkward to watch, but he thought it was endearing that Elon owned his awkwardness. Daniel agrees it was awkward, but you know, by the way that man thinks, it makes sense that he’s a little more “out of the normal” than the rest of us. Max poses the question, who is normal, really? There’s a lot of power in admitting that you’re not normal. By leaning into your weirdness, you are able to dive deeper into your own superpower. Daniel loves that. Take your biggest weakness and turn it into a trait. That’s the best way to succeed. Tuesday’s Tips — Get Frustrated Easily?
Do you have a hard time controlling your anger? Do you just let your thoughts stew in your head and then blow up at people? Ouch! There’s a solution for this. Bill was working with an accomplished CEO, but gosh, did he have a temper! He was easily triggered, too. The problem was that he was seeing a level of incompetence among his people and it was frustrating him, and forcing him to refocus on the immediate fire. However, Bill had him walk around on the floor and really get to know his people. Approach the problem from a more side-to-side approach than a top-down approach. When he began doing that, he developed a lot of compassion and understanding for what his team was REALLY going through, and he was able to show up and support them much better because of it. Getting Real with Leigh-Anne Acquisto — Liquorish Ink
Welcome to another Getting Real episode where we deep dive into entrepreneurs’ journeys and discover all the good, the bad, and lucky breaks they’ve received throughout their uncommon career! Today’s guest is Leigh-Anne Acquisto, the founder of Liquorish Ink, a brand behavior business that creates innovative ideas and brand stories. Leigh-Anne started her career in corporate as a brand strategist and after seven years, she decided it was time to start her own business that specializes specifically in strategy. Strategy is one of the fundamental aspects of growing a brand, and Leigh-Anne is passionate about thinking big-picture and long-term to see that vision come to life. Leigh-Anne believes her luckiest break so far in the industry has been getting word-of-mouth clients to fill her pipeline. It’s been a challenge for Leigh-Anne because she doesn’t have business partners, so everything that she does to move the needle can really break or make the business. In fact, some of the challenges Leigh-Anne faced this year did not necessarily happen in the business, but externally. Her clients were faced with big uncertainties as COVID-19 and the pandemic hit, and Leigh-Anne had to carefully navigate those waters and not overextend herself and the company. 261 - Elliott Holland — Understanding the Due Diligence Process
Interested in buying a business and you’d like to know what goes on behind the scenes? Any good investor or buyer will first conduct their due diligence and verify the business does what it says it does. This week’s guest talks all about it! Elliott Holland is the Founder of Guardian Due Diligence and he helps entrepreneurs select businesses, underwrites them, and then performs due diligence checks to make sure entrepreneurs aren't getting taken advantage of by sellers or brokers. Elliott usually sees deals anywhere from $1-5 million dollars in purchase price and they usually take about 3-6 months to close. However, if you’re doing the due diligence process correctly, it can take over a year to find the right business and deal for you. You’d be surprised by how many people are willing to lie about their business and fudge the numbers. Buyers, if you’re paying for 6-8x cash flow, a lot of sellers will lie. Elliott shares some of his first-hand experiences as to why certain deals just don’t go through. Little clues about the sellers can give you all sorts of information about their character, and the type of business they’re operating. If the person doesn’t quite ‘fit the bill’ when it comes to the industry they’re operating in, it should be looked at a little more closely. There’s always an opportunity to commit fraud. Tuesday’s Tips — Missing Targets and Deadlines?
Are you missing key company targets? Do you find your performance declining in some way? Are you not sure what might be the cause of it? Bill has the perfect resource for you! Bill was working with a manufacturing company and after moving to a new facility, they were having some pretty mysterious productivity problems. Production was falling off, they were behind on their targets and unable to catch up, and more. Not being able to see the problem right away, Bill asked the team to order eight (8!) whiteboards. They then sat down and spent 45 minutes on what each of the metrics might be for each department. This gave the entire team a clear vision and it set the expectation of what everyone needed to be striving for, each and every day. If you’re unclear what some of your departmental goals are, try this method! Getting Real with Angela Pointon — 11outof11
Bill gets to dive deep with another entrepreneur who is in the marketing world. She shares her challenges, biggest mistakes, and some of the amazing things she’s grateful for since starting her business four years ago! How did Angela come up with her company name? Well after working in a very fast-paced agency, she realized that everyone on the team was overwhelmed and stressed out. Whenever there was a new client in the pipeline, the team that had the least amount of work would get them, but everyone was relatively busy and maxed out. When Angela decided to start her company, she wanted to do something slightly different. She wanted to provide a high-quality experience for her clients with people who were overwhelmed. This is why she named her company 11outof11 — because they are better than a standard 10-out-of-10 score. Angela wanted to set her business up differently compared to what she experienced in the agency world. She has about 55 subcontractors and works with them on an on-need basis, and has about nine core team members that work with her clients directly. 260: Lisa Song Sutton — Seven-Figure Company with No Investors
Today’s topic expert shares how she scaled her business, created multiple companies, and even pivoted during the pandemic when her primary customers, tourists, ran dry. Lisa Song Sutton is an Entrepreneur, Real Estate Investor, and former Miss Nevada. She started her business career working in a top Las Vegas law firm and has since gone on to create multiple companies of her own. Her first business, Sin City Cupcakes, is an iconic Las Vegas treat that delights tens of thousands of locals and visitors each year. Lisa is also the co-founder of Ship Las Vegas, Elite Homes – Christie’s International Real Estate, and Liquid & Lace swimwear. How does one go from law school to then becoming an entrepreneur? Lisa loved law school and thought it was a great foundation for her because she learned right away how to NOT get sued. She ended up starting her cupcake company in 2012 while she was still working as an Associate at a law firm. It was a fun side hustle until it grew into a full-fledged business about a year later. Las Vegas has 44 million visitors a year. It’s insane, and having a company that catered directly to the party scene, was almost a no-brainer. Lisa’s “boozy” cupcakes ended up striking big with both the local and tourist crowd. You name it, bachelorette parties, weddings, and more, they were catering at these events. However, 2020 was a very scary year for Lisa. 80% of her business ended up canceling for the rest of the year. It was a huge shock. Lisa was fortunate that her thriving business was nine years old by this point, and they had some cash reserves to pivot and test out a new product offering. When it comes to an emergency, you have to think on your feet, and creatively, to get the job done. Tuesday’s Tips — What Task To Do Next?
Are you feeling nervous or unsure what to work on? Every CEO knows what it’s like to have emergencies, breakdowns, and little fires to put out, but when you’re doing this all day, everyday, it can almost feel daunting trying to figure out which fire or task to focus on. Bill had a client that faced exactly this problem. A great exercise to do is the ‘Net Promoter System’ (NPS) scoring. This exercise gives you a bird’s eye view on everything that’s happening and any disconnects that’s appearing in the business. It gives CEOs a clear vision on what needs immediate attention, and where customers feel like the business is falling short. Try it out and you’ll quickly see some of the gaps that need filling. Getting Real with Sean Gannet — SFG Productions
This week’s entrepreneur is a Technical Producer, Creative Producer, and Filmmaker. He is the Founder of SFG Productions, and they focus on live events, broadcasts, virtual conferences, and so much more. Let’s dive into Sean’s entrepreneurial story! Sean was forced to become an entrepreneur. This was definitely not on his radar when he was a kid. Sean was slowly freelancing here and there, and eventually, his clients said that they needed him to be a company. As a freelancer, he had a hard time saying no, and the number of clients coming through his door made him realize he had to hire and scale or else he’d be losing some great opportunities. Sean’s lucky break happened when he got a production gig for TED Talks. At the time, it was not nearly as big as it was before, but he took on the challenge and it led to fantastic press for his company. The video production on the TED Talk stages was much better quality than any “standard” conference at the time. When Sean joined EO, it was like a curtain being pulled back and he saw how much knowledge he was missing out on to successfully grow his business. It took him roughly two years to be in the program before he hit his first million in sales, and it’s just been a blessing of a resource. 259: Eric Partaker — 3 Simple Productivity Hacks
We sometimes pick up some bad patterns and habits, and no matter how hard we try, we still fall back to old routines. This week’s guest shows you what you can do to break out of this vicious cycle and instead 3X your ability to achieve your goals! Eric Partaker is a Peak Performance Expert that helps CEOs and Entrepreneurs scale themselves and their companies, while also improving their well-being. Eric is a big believer in the power of threes, and shares why it doesn’t have to be a huge and complex routine to create new habits! Eric has a competitive spirit, but he had a massive wake-up call. One day he realized that all of this drive and ambition was really fueled by his insecurity, and it was impacting his health. He found himself having a heart attack on an airplane. He didn’t want to die, he had a five-year-old son to take care of, yet he would often spend 100 hours at work. Something just didn’t add up right. Eric shares how his three alarms are such a simple shift in mindset that anyone can incorporate it. One of his clients would set an alarm that said “70-year old me” on it whenever it went off. This gave him the motivation needed to lose 25 pounds within a three-month period. He tapped into identity-driven change by constantly imagining his future self. What makes this trick so effective is that you’re envisioning the best version of yourself at a specific time of day. This way, you can create small implemental changes without trying to push the whole boulder up a mountain. It gives your mind a psychological boost to act in a simple way and create a positive change. Tuesday’s Tips — Feeling Trapped?
Oh no! Do you hate your job or feel like you’re trapped in your business? Don’t worry. It happens to all of us from time to time but there is a way to proactively tackle this dilemma Bill walks his clients through an eye-opening exercise called: FACE: Functional Accountability Chart Exercise. It forces the CEO to look at all the jobs an organization has and it’s critical importance. It turned out that the CEO actually didn’t ant most of the jobs that were listed in FACE despite his name being responsible for most of those roles. Are you someone who loves your business, but not all the ‘moving’ parts of the business? By going through FACE, you can quickly see what makes sense to outsource right away to get some of your energy back, and bring you to a more enjoyable work space. You can give all these roles away and make other people, who would be excellent for the role, more accountable in these different seats. This free up so much time and you’ll find a new love for your business once again. Getting Real with Tatiana Soldatova — Syllable Design
This week’s entrepreneur talks about breaking out of the status quo and creating a company that goes against the grain from the other companies like it within the industry. Tatiana Soldatova has a passion for bringing great minds together on complex projects to push boundaries and innovate. She is the co-founder of Syllable Inc., an award-winning retail, corporate, and multi-unit residential design firm based in Toronto, Canada. When Tatiana was in design school, she knew she wanted to have her own practice, and she knew she wanted to do things slightly differently than the way it’s always been done. “Stay in your lane,” was often advice she’d receive from older designers in the industry and Tatiana wanted to create a more collaborative environment in her company. One of her biggest challenges is cash flow and putting a premium price on the type of work her company provides. Despite Tatiana’s extensive experience, she struggled at the beginning with undervaluing some of her offers and consulting bids. However, she realized really quickly that you can’t grow as a company if you’re not pricing yourself according to your value. 258: Karen Tiber Leland — Make Time For Marketing
Marketing can be a big monster to tackle all at once. Everyone knows its importance, yet it seems no one really has enough time for it. Today’s guest shares how to get ahead of marketing so that you can lead it, direct it, and be intentional with it. Karen Tiber Leland is the Founder of Sterling Marketing Group, a branding and marketing strategy and implementation firm helping CEOs, executives, and Entrepreneurs develop strong personal, business, and thought leadership brands. One of the biggest breakdowns people have is, how do they make time for marketing when they have “real” business things to focus on? Believe it or not, even marketing firms struggle with this! They’re so busy helping other people’s marketing that they end up neglecting their own. Truth is, it’s hard to make time for your own thing. Everything going on in the background, the news, the pandemic, the economy; all these external things that you can’t control, it slows things down in your brain and they steal your focus. Don’t beat yourself up if you’re feeling not “as productive” lately. Your brain is absorbing all the wrong things. Do you have magical thinking when it comes to your to-do list? Meaning, the moment you write it down, you know it’s “magically” just going to happen? For the most part, the things that we write on our to-do list for that day, do not get done. How do you win at this? Pick only one to four things that are critical for today’s success, and be okay with that result. Tuesday’s Tips — No Time to Work ON the Business!
How many entrepreneurs, CEOs, and leaders feel stressed out that they can’t seem to work on the business? If you’re one of them, don’t worry, you’re not alone. With everything a leader has to manage, it can be hard to even find time to think! It doesn’t matter what size you are. Bill hears this same problem across all industries, company sizes, and revenues. If you just can’t find the time to work on the business, Bill knows how to help! One of Bill’s clients always seemed to be putting out fires within the business and had absolutely zero time to work with Bill after setting their quarterly goals and expectations. They couldn’t move the needle within the company. This is a big warning sign that the business is not sustainable. You have to be proactive with your meeting rhythms. It’s critical team members meet regularly to talk about their next steps. Set a recurring meeting time for the entire team and make sure no one double books or prioritizes something else over it. There will always be fires you’ll want to put out, but by setting these consistent rhythms, you’ll actually be able to work on having fewer fires, not more! Tuesday’s Tips — Managing the Whispers and Side Conversations
Do you have a lot of back-channel conversations? They’re basically watercooler chats that don’t seem to make sense for the bigger vision of the company. They are usually people within the company who are pulling vital team members aside to converse about an upcoming project, etc. because they don’t feel comfortable talking to the boss or leadership team about it. One of Bill’s CEOs has their team whispering in the shadows trying to figure out what was “the next thing” to get done. They were off to the side and not showing strong direction within the company. The problem? The CEO hated conflict and would do anything to avoid it. The fix? Bill took time to discuss cultural values, childhood upbringing, and why it was such a pain point for this CEO to bring up the tough conversations. With a little bit of self-awareness and reflection, the CEO recognized some of their blindspots and was able to make the necessary changes to the company. Conflict style discovery is a helpful exercise for any leader to help better manage the expectations their team might have of them. The tough and honest conversations are hard to do, but it will drastically reduce the side whispers within your company and you can finally get the whole team focused on pulling in the same direction. Getting Real with Kait LeDonne — Brandwise Media
This week’s entrepreneur shares her story from corporate America to going her own way in the personal branding space. She shares some of her biggest mistakes, challenges, and more! Kait LeDonne is the Founder of Brandwise Media, a personal branding agency based in New York, which builds executive and author personal brands using content marketing strategies through social media. Kait is also the author of The Attraction Magnet and is regularly featured in national and international publications as a commentator on celebrity and corporate brands. Kait’s superpower is the ability to authentically share her thoughts and herself online. She believes this was a key to discovering her natural strengths in personal branding and having her network reach out countless times to get their personal brand off the ground. Kait started her business when she was 26 and she had to really overcome her feelings of imposter syndrome. After that hurdle, she was then faced with how to scale her business in a way that would be sustainable. It’s a fine dance she has to do every day in making sure each department has the resources they need. 256: Scaling Up Insights — Coach Panel with Ami Kassar, Cheryl Biron, and Dominic Monkhouse
In this new episode of Scaling Up Insights, we have panelists, Ami Kassar, CEO of MultiFunding, and the author of The Growth Dilemma; Cheryl Biron, a Business Growth Coach in both Scaling Up and 3HAG methodologies; and Dominic Monkhouse, a Business Growth Architect. In December of 2020 alone, women accounted for 100% of the jobs lost. Women in the workforce are suffering and it doesn’t look like they’ll be returning to the job market anytime soon. Schools are too unpredictable and the people who can’t afford it are single moms. With so many women leaving the workforce, Bill is worried about the quality of perspectives and the impact it will have on innovation within companies. In addition to the male/female disparities, the pandemic has deeply impacted the lowest economic class a lot harder and those jobs haven’t come back yet. When it comes to coming back into work, people are getting emotional that they can finally shake hands with “strangers” and be in the same room with people. In Dominic’s experience, you get more of an impact when you’re in the same room with people, and he believes that’s probably true with most teams and most companies. Bill believes we’re headed for a hybrid model. Dominic is not so sure. Whenever he worked remotely for international teams, it was apparent he was a second-class citizen. If someone chose not to go to work and work from him, he believes they’d be missing these same benefits too. Tuesday’s Tips — Can’t Seem to Move the Needle?
Do you feel stuck in your business? You’re doing everything and doing nothing at the same time? And the little progress you do seem to make, ends up with more arguments and confusion in the end? Bill took over a company several years ago and the old leadership team was still there. No matter what Bill did, there would always be conflict within the leadership team. They couldn’t seem to get on the same page. Because Bill was a partner in this business, there was no way he could simply “just leave.” He had to make it work somehow. If your leadership is not aligned, you have to make some tough changes there. How do you get someone on the same page as you? Bill used a series of tools like defining a clear vision for the company, the brand’s promise, communication, building trust, and more to turn the ship around.
