Ron Ananian, The Car Doctor goes North to Montreal to take a call from Ian, a regular listener, about his 07 Pontiac Torrent with a noise that sounds like a wheel bearing. The catch is he has replaced all the wheel bearings and brakes as maintenance but now he has a noise like a bearing but no other indicators add up. The Car Doctor rides to the rescue and helps Ian take a fresh perspective to a repair. Ron then takes a call from Virginia regarding a 2010 Ford Expedition with 185,000 plus miles that seized the engine due to loss of oil pressure. Ron tries to deter the caller from spending time to replace only the crankshaft and bearings on what is likely a failed engine. Ron explains that this engine is in need of an overhaul and the caller should consider engine replacement. The Car Doctor, Ron Ananian starts this episode talking about the dangers in auto repair; how safety is a concern all the time and not to be taken lightly. Ron recounts the repair from his shop this week on a 2019 Cadillac Escalade that need front shock/strut replacement. The tool that compresses the coil spring broke one of its clamps that hold the spring in place and by the grace of god Danny was saved because he had not removed the top nut completely. One step faster and the top mount would not have been there to hold the spring in place. Ron goes into detail and a bit of a look at why auto repair is truly a dangerous job. Ron Ananian, The Car Doctor kicks off this hour talking about solving problems by research with a story from the shop this week. Ron recounts a 2022 Honda CRV Hybrid that needed trans fluid service. But the fluid choice went against conventional wisdom and past experience. A critical decision, use the wrong fluid and you will ruin the transmission. Ron and company keep their heads down, stay calm and research the problem searching for the answer. He then talks about a 2013 Acura with a random driveability problem. He points out that the Acura has a bad Steering Angle Sensor, which is mounted on the Air Bag Clock Spring; both of which are now 11 yeas old and made of plastic. Its time to research, research, research. Ron's first call this hour is with Rick from Nebraska. He has some concerns about the transmission on his 2020 Ford F150. The Car Doctor helps all of us to understand some basic transmission service do's and don'ts for longer transmission life and better operation. The manual says he must remove the exhaust to gain access but as Ron points out that will be difficult due to the age of the vehicle. Ron starts this episode talking about problems caused by not taking care of a vehicle. He describes a road situation he came across one Saturday morning where a newer Cadillac was driving on a flat tire, ruining the rim along with the suspension, maybe, escorted by the police? A strange one indeed! He then take a call from Paul in VA; he has a 95 Ford Bronco with a noise near the back of the engine that no one car properly diagnose. Ron sets him on the path for a correct diagnosis. The Car Dr then takes a call from a listener with questions about his 2015 Nissan Rogue asking Ron’s opinion on an aftermarket maintenance warranty policy. Ron helps us all understand if there is value in the deal by breaking down the numbers to see if any of it makes sense. HIs next up is a little vague; the caller is not sure if its an 84 or 85 Dodge truck that starts and runs for about 15 minutes, then dies. Talking To The Younger Mechanics! Ron starts this episode saying that someone asked him this week if he would do it all over again, and gives you his answer. He talks about what it takes to be successful in auto repair from his perspective, based on his experiences. He also recounts a conversation this week in the shop with a GM master technician. The young tech is doing 2 -3 engine swaps a week at his dealership due to problems GM is having with their V8 engines in certain model SUV's and Trucks. Ron opens the phones this hour with a call on a 98 Town and Country that dies after a restart . Its been 2 years and the owner is afraid to drive it but no one can offer him a diagnosis. Welcome to todays Classic Car Doctor episode! Ron finishes a call from the previous episode about a Ford Taurus with a miss fire fault. The ignition system came 2 ways this year, 2001. A coil on plug stand along version and a coil on plug with ignition wires. It matters not because Ron helps us understand the proper method to test ignition coils and systems using some basic, affordable test equipment. Next up is a call from NYC regarding a 2005 Honda Civic with a rattling front suspension noise. The chain store that replaced front struts in the vehicle says its not their part and the Honda dealer says it is. The vehicle owner is stuck in the middle and he turns to Ron for the answer. He opens the phones today with a call on a 2020 Ford F250 Super Duty Pickup truck where the caller changed the fuel filter and then had some problems getting the truck to start & run. Ron goes over some of the resolution options and ends up pointing out flaws by design in the priming procedure; as published by Ford Motor Company. Next, Ron travels down South and takes a call on a 2017 Chevrolet 1500 Silverado that was recently purchased from a car rental company fleet. The engine had problems with the AFM (Active Fuel Management) system and needed valvetrain repair. The caller opted for AFM elimination with a different camshaft and lifters along with a software upgrade. Since then it has other issues and he needs Ron's help to gain a diagnostic direction.
