Rou and Eight return to the inn, carrying with them a velvet pouch and a scroll with a broken seal. They discuss the nuances of wolf pack behaviors and speculate how Arthas’s interview with Professor Whitmire went. When the group is together again, they discover the pouch contains a one-way communication device.Rou attempts to contact anyone that might be at the other end, informing the listener of Arcterus’s fate and that they will be the owners of the device. Rou and Eight head to the dungeons to visit Arcterus, bringing with them a treat for him to enjoy. They are able to ask him about the transporter that he stole and his memories surrounding his death. Although his answers weren’t as helpful as the pair anticipated, he is able to point Eight toward a person that could help them hone their magic skills.They later find Arcterus’s old office, which is now in possession of the university’s newest member, Professor Blossom. Eight and Arthas have returned Benny to his mother and head off to meet back up with Rou. They eventually run into one of the professors, who convinces Arthas to help him with research on Giant-Kin society. Eight is not left alone for long, finding Rou amongst the crowd of students.The pair decide to pay a visit to Arcterus, starting with a trip to the guard station where they learn Arcterus has been tried and now sits in the dungeon awaiting his fate. In order to gain permission for the visit, Rou and Eight are escorted to the chambers of the Kidohlvan Council. Eight and Arthas arrive at the park with Benny and the illusory cat, Liquid. At first, handing a cat to the toddler does not work in the pair’s favor. Benny’s attention is quickly diverted when a vendor selling treats comes into view. Eight quickly obliges, but learns children are not great at negotiating when they try to exchange the treat for the cat.Enlisting some help from the vendor, Eight and Arthas are able to get the cat from the child’s tight grip. As a show of appreciation for the assistance, Eight happily performs a trick with Liquid. The pair then proceed to wrap up some leftovers in preparation to go meet with Arcterus.It is at this point that their morning is interrupted by Beverly’s daughter, who is in desperate need of a baby-sitter. In exchange for two free nights, Beverly convinces Eight and Arthas to watch her grandson, a toddler named Benny. On the other side of the door is a lovely sitting room, sunlight gleaming through leaded glass. In one of the chairs sits a figure cloaked in silver robes, their face obscured by a hood. The group immediately recognizes that this is the individual they saw upon their arrival in Kidohlva.They reveal their name is Venya, and that a week before the group arrived they had a vision.Upon sharing the details of the vision, the four of them start to discuss the meaning behind it and Rou shares some doubts as to why they’ve been chosen to hear it. When he questions Venya’s motives, they admit they can’t force them to solve this mystery. Arthas and Rou spend a few days doing their own research, as well as indulging in some of the activities that Kidohlva has to offer. Arthas is finally able to get his first tattoo and Rou partakes in some of the lectures offered at the university. Eight, on the other hand, gets lost in their research and leaves little time to indulge in anything else.One day, while studying together in the observation lounge, the group notices that the staff assigned to assist them suddenly leaves the room without a word. Rou and Arthas then begin to feel their eyelids grow heavy, the muscles become weary and the draw of sleep becomes strong. Even Eight begins to feel drowsy and fails to resist the hold of this strange force.They soon realize that they’re in a dark abyss. A voice speaks from the darkness, echoing in the vast space. The librarian Zura escorts Arthas past a hall of portraits and into an older section of the library. As the pair scan tomes and scrolls for information on Giant-Kin, Arthas comes across what appears to be a text depicting cultural aspects of his people, though not necessarily obtained through honest means.The further he digs, the more he learns that some of the Aerir’s teachings may have been false. He also comes across some interesting information regarding the being that allegedly caused his deity’s death. In order to complete his quest, Arthas learns that there are dangerous steps ahead.Zura tells Arthas that all knowledge is worth having, even if it comes at a cost. The librarian Jenar brings Eight to a very old section of the archives. Although she leaves them with an electric lantern, Eight casts a light spell on their head for hands-free assistance. The area has been left disorganized and cluttered, but that doesn’t appear to diminish the Warforged’s enthusiasm. After some preliminary searching to determine the contents of the section, Eight calls Jenar back and the two begin digging in earnest.Jenar shares that, as part of the War of Seven Hells, Eulelan revolutionists contracted with an inventor in Baukora to design Warforged for their side. However, war profiteers were able to obtain copies of the blueprints and share them with the Adar-Kai Empire. This would mean Warforged have been around for over 400 years. Scouring old maps and ledgers, Eight is able to figure out the family crest that matches the bird on their plating. The librarian Sira leads Rou down several flights into a very old section of the archives and then leaves him to search alone. As he scans the texts and scrolls, their pages covered in dust from disuse, he finds more frustration than answers. Many of the documents in the library’s archives aren’t written as fact. Historical data, at least for Werewolves, seems to be lacking.Trying not to give up, he begins to broaden his search. After their meeting with the University’s Headmaster, the group heads down further into the mountain. Upon arriving at the guard station, they’re able to turn over Arcterus and obtain a brochure to help guide them through the city. It is suggested they head to The Silver Pearl, an inn close to the residential district and therefore less prone to be swarmed by tourists.Wandering through the city, they get glimpses of the diversity of its inhabitants and layout. Alcoves for musicians, symposiums, and artists flow into market stalls and reading nooks. The doors to Kidohlva are large and intricately carved into the side of the mountain, guarded by four guards in fur-lined coats. The group approaches carefully, though they find the caution is unwarranted as all are welcome at the University. Deciding to disregard the guards’ advice about making an appointment, they head straight to the office of the University’s Headmaster. It isn’t long before it is revealed that Arcterus was actually banished for stealing an important artifact, and now must deal with the repercussions of his actions. The battle continues as two more white wolves join the fray. They appear smaller, but they are just as vicious as the first. Unfortunately, the party is unable to protect Rou from a nearly devastating attack. The wound triggers a natural reaction, which transforms the Baukoran. In an effort to keep his friends safe from himself, Rou runs off and leaves the others to finish the fight. The remaining creatures are taken down in short order with some unexpected help from a pair of allies who appear among the trees. Big Mood’s siblings emerge from the brush and share an awkward reunion with their estranged brother. In an effort to bury the hatchet, Mood's siblings declare that a celebration is in order for his first successful adventure. While Arthas and the Minotaur trio gather the bodies of the crystal-backed wolves to turn in for a reward, Eight rushes off into the wilderness in pursuit of their friend Rou. Despite his efforts to remain elusive, Eight manages to stay on his trail, calling out for Rou in the darkness. Upon reverting back to his human form, Rou calls to Eight and the pair have a heart-to-heart talk.Eight reminds Rou that he travels with a pair of misunderstood adventurers who many would consider dangerous. With some friendly reassurance, the Baukoran's immediate fears are assuaged and he agrees to return to town. Perhaps, given time, Rou will see that he is not the monster he believes himself to be. The group follows the trail down into the valley, Arthas maintaining a fair distance ahead. Rou is the first to spot a glinting light quickly followed by shadows moving among the trees. Realizing they’re hot on the trail, Big Mood suggests that Eight and Rou try sledding down into the valley in order to catch up to Arthas. This leaves Big Mood alone to deal with a massive white wolf that emerges from hiding.As everyone converges in combat, the wolf proves to be a formidable foe. They start to get the upper hand, but then the sound of heavy footprints is heard in the distance. Arthas notices a shadowy figure at the edges of the farm and decides to follow it. The rest of his companions follow shortly after, taking their time to investigate footprints and a trail of fluids among the trees.As they continue through the woods, each of them begins to hallucinate. They hear things and their thoughts begin to dwell on some of their fears. An overwhelming sense of dread overtakes the party. When they manage to track the beast to a valley, a mournful howl fills the air. Rou, Eight, and Arthas come to the end of the tunnels. However, instead of ending at Kidohlva, they find they have arrived in a mountain village named Westbridge. The warehouse workers they run into take them to the local tavern, utterly confused as to how they arrived if they aren’t associated with the supply caravans.While the group waits for some food, they are invited to the table of a minotaur named Ferdinand Moody. Ferdinand, also known as “Big Mood”, shares that he is on his very first adventure and has been looking for fellow adventurers to help with the wanted poster he carries. Arthas discovers that the source of the pin-prick was a sword, wielded by a squirrel-like creature named Neru. Rou is successful in negotiating help from Neru’s people, but in exchange, they need to pay respects to their queen. When the trio agrees, they are escorted down into an abandoned cavern where it appears people may have once lived.Each of them offers up a gift to the queen of the creatures they now know are called Sciuren, and in return, she promises an escort through the first part of the labyrinth of tunnels. On their journey, the group learns a little about the Sciuren and their culture. Ahead of the group is a set of five tunnels, splayed out like fingers on a hand. Rou tries to discern which way to go, and for some reason feels the tunnel second to the right is the best choice. The group decides to camp, rather than continue further, and after some discussion, they decide to sleep where they can keep an eye on all the tunnels.Eight attempts to make food paste, but it makes a loud noise and while it’s edible, it’s not palatable. It’s very wet and the noise of the conjuration echoes in the tunnels. While Rou and Arthas sleep, Eight hears scratching in the dark and follows the noise. They see something furry escape through a crack in the wall. Unable to get a better look, they resume their watch through the rest of the night.Morning comes and Eight makes hard-boiled eggs and conjures their first chicken with encouragement from their companions. After the chicken fades from existence an hour later, Rou feels hot breath on his ear and Arthas notices a rock fall along the cave walls. While examining a fissure in the wall, he expresses his concern about the stability of the tunnels. The group continues down the tunnel until they come to some stairs.Arthas is first to go up the steps and it slowly gets smaller and smaller, until he becomes lodged. Suddenly, he feels what seems like a small dagger against his throat which triggers his instinct to fight. Returning from what may be his final hunt, Arthas joins his clan in a celebration. Tomorrow he begins his apprenticeship under the Aerir, the elder who is responsible for maintaining and remembering the histories of the Giant-kin. Unlike his friends and family, however, the celebration holds no joy for Arthas.Just as a storm begins to roll in, Arthas hears the sound of metal clanging and hoofbeats clapping against the stone. Heading up toward the cave where his people dwell, Arthas sees a man riding a strange beast. This man, named Yancy, claims to be a knight and asks for food and shelter from the storm. Yancy is granted leave to stay until the storm passes, and Arthas is anxious to learn all about the wide world beyond his cave. Rou rejoins Eight and Arthas and updates them about a secret tunnel that will lead them to Kidohlva. If they wish to take this option, they are to meet the clerk at The Purple Plum, a restaurant to the south of town, around supper time. Anticipating how cold it might get underground, Arthas buys some small barrels of animal fat but leaves three on the street “free to a good chef”.Outside The Purple Plum, the young woman stands there wearing a dark cloak. She appears nervous, but leads them around the corner and down an alley, away from prying eyes and ears. She proposes to lead them to where the supply caravans go to enter the underground tunnels and warns them that it is potentially dangerous and civilians aren’t normally allowed down there. She also requests they keep her involvement a secret since she could lose her job for showing them how to get in. As compensation for her risk, she wants a book called The Gilded Rose.The trio is brought to a warehouse where they are then led into the tunnels through a trapdoor. Rou smells sandalwood and lily, very faintly, but opts not to share this with the others. Eight, Arthas and Rou wander the streets in the rain, which are relatively quiet compared to the day before. The first thing they find is an old, ramshackle building with a sign that says “Airship Museum”. Deciding to check it out, they find it is not quite what they expected. As they leave the museum, they run into a woman whom Eight calls Mina - now known as Sarah - who takes them to lunch at a nice café nearby. She carries a small chihuahua named Charlie, who has mixed feelings about his owner’s dining companions. While Eight and Sarah catch up, she reveals that the route to Kidohlva will be closed for the next six months as it is too dangerous.The group heads to the welcome center, hoping that another route may be available to them. A young girl there offers Rou an alternative but asks that they meet her outside of The Purple Plum around 6 when she is off work. Arthas meets a young man named Robert, who wants his autograph, who hands over a flyer from yesterday’s fight. Arthas tells the young man to wait while he goes and obtains assistance from Rou and Eight. When he returns, the young man provides Arthas with his newest title - the Triumphant of Azarra.The proprietor shares that he needs them to leave for the day, at least until 4 pm, so that he can do his weekly cleaning. While Eight is outside in the stables gathering their things, Rou takes advantage of the situation to learn more about Arthas. Eventually, he asks about the knight from whom Arthas learned and Arthas shares the compendium he carries with him. Rou flips through the book and sees the picture of the youth with the sword and the stone, but has a hard time placing where he has seen that image before. When Arthas turns the tables and begins to question Rou on his past, the two learn they can both commiserate on stifling family members, and how it is hard to deal with those that choose your future for you. Realizing Eight has been gone for some time, they head outside to find Eight has been busy cleaning the stables. Prostrate and under restraint, Vess becomes subject to the group’s questioning.Francis begins the interrogation and Vess, in an attempt to redirect the questioning, implies that he and the inspector have more in common than Francis may like to admit. Rou then asks into the nature of why he is leaving town, to which Vess responds it is to procure wine for Francis. Eight becomes suspicious and turns their questioning to the inspector, who quickly waves this off. He indicates that the town guard serves the will of the nobility and as a member, he indirectly serves Vess’s master.Despite their best efforts, the interrogation begins to go poorly as Vess seeds doubt in the group’s minds. Eight, in particular, seems to be taking it the hardest. We join our party just as they sit down to dinner at The Overlook Inn. Most of the individuals Arthas saw earlier in the day are still there, but the individual he had questioned is gone. There is now a chipper young woman, named Noura, acting as the server. The “menu” is as questionable as the establishment and consists of a single option. The group is hesitant until smiling Noura shares that all the food is freshly made by her, including a dessert she calls “creme brully”.Inspector Francis orders the oldest bottle of wine and Noura returns with a pleasant surprise - a nicely aged Baukoran wine. He is quick to share with Rou, who gets a little lesson in wine tasting as well. The surprises continue as the group enjoys a delicious vegetable stew, fresh-baked bread, and that homemade dessert. During dinner, a finely dressed individual, with a small tattoo behind his right ear, comes into the inn. Rou overhears him tell Noura that he plans to leave town tomorrow, which piques the group’s interest. When Rou approaches he learns, through an uncomfortable conversation, that his name is Aerin Vess. Art and Rou follow a suspicious, unnamed individual who leads them to The Overlook Inn. Arthas heads inside to find out more about them while Rou keeps watch from the building’s exterior. When Arthas begins to question the man they followed, he suggests they should be careful who they trust. When he implies Francis might be a crooked detective, Arthas and Rou rush back to the medical tent in case Eight is in trouble.Meanwhile, Eight learns from Margot the description of the man who gave her the poison, but shares that she doesn’t know his name. As the conversation continues, Eight becomes upset and attempts to intimidate her by applying pressure to her wrist. When she starts to scream, Francis convinces her to follow him to the station where questioning can be done in private. Ashamed of their actions, Eight hides in the medical tent.Arthas and Rou arrive to see a crowd dissipating but no Eight or Francis in sight, and they hear from a bystander that Eight had hurt some woman. They find Eight in the medical tent, alone. Rou comforts Eight after they share how they have reinforced the negative perspectives about their kind. Eight refuses to go to the station, but encourages Rou and Arthas to go.Rou and Arthas arrive in time for them to overhear Margot telling Francis that the individual that gave her the vial had a small tattoo on the fleshy area between the thumb and forefinger. Arthas shares what he learned from the man he followed, to which Francis has an “easy explanation”. The Inspector shares the meaning behind the fingerprint he found and explains that the next step in the investigation is to conduct interviews. The group concurs this is the logical next step and begins to organize and prioritize their list of suspects. Arthas rejoins Eight and Rou, who are saddened by the news of Jane’s passing. The group meets Inspector Francis Broussard, a Tiefling that works with the town guard, who tells them he is investigating her murder. The Inspector agrees to allow the party to assist him, so long as they understand they’re still technically suspects, and begins to collect evidence.Eight creates a pipe to mimic Francis and introduces another persona, known as Inspector Nine. Enjoying their enthusiasm, Inspector Broussard then suggests they go to a local tobacconist to get pipes if they feel it will help with the investigation. When they return to the platform where the competition was held, they begin their investigation in earnest. Rou is able to help reconstruct the scene while Francis examines the residue remaining in the pie tin.Francis is able to discover the type of poison that was used and shares with the group that it would have to be someone who was an assassin or have access to one. Arthas finds a vial on the ground, nearly hidden by the platform, and Eight tests it and confirms that the poison was in the vial. Rou and Eight make it to the pie-eating competition, which is run by a gnome named Reginald. The goal is to eat as many pies as possible in an hour - no regurgitation, no passing out, and no leaving the table for any reason. While preparing for the competition, Rou and Eight meet Jane, the reigning champion. Eventually, Jane and Eight are all that remain at the table. Unfortunately, Jane starts to choke, and Eight attempts to save her. Afterward, Eight takes some food from her plate and tastes it in an attempt to discern if there is foul play. Eight is able to recognize she has been poisoned but they don’t recognize the specific poison and she is taken off to the medical tent. Eight wins a trophy and a coin purse for being the one individual remaining at the table. Reginald tells them to go off and enjoy the festival, he will report the incident to the guards and if they want to talk to Eight and Rou, they will find them. Rou mentions where they are staying, then he and Eight decide to go see Jane at the medical tent.As they head that way they discuss the implications of the contest and who could have poisoned Jane, why they did it, and how they did it. When they arrive they learn Jane has passed. The episode opens with Eight and Rou leaving the arena after the fight between Renny and Arthas. The competition lasted several hours and it is now mid-afternoon. The atmosphere of Azarra is very festival-like - vendors selling fried food, games, friendly competitions, etc. Eight questions a local about what to do, and he suggests they go check out a local crisp vendor. She is an older woman, but they are warned not to call her “granny”.Rou and Eight go and find the crisp vendor, a dwarf with dark hair and a scarf covering her face to prevent her beard from getting into the crisp. They debate the merits of holding places in line, and whether or not the vat she uses is fueled by magic. Eight is disappointed to learn that the baking is not magic-based, and the dwarf comments magic users are lazy.They grab some crisp, including two that they save for Arthas, and then they head to the docks where the airships are. While they sit at the docks, Thomas and his lackeys show up. They tell Rou he needs to be out of the city in two days because he is not welcome. Rou, Eight, and Arthas enjoy a large breakfast before they rush off to get Arthas registered for the fight. According to the proprietor, they can find the arena at what the locals call “the pier”, a mass of rock on the cliffside that juts out over the sea. Traveling through the bustling crowd they eventually come to the registration booth, where Arthas meets a very nasty cat-person.Eight and Rou are able to watch from the stands, where the crowd is rather dense and vendors wander throughout while advertising snacks and other wares. The pair share awkward conversation until the competition begins. They witness four matches before Arthas is led out to fight the same cat-person he met at registration. He wins handily and is escorted away until his next match. Each opponent that Arthas faces is quickly vanquished, and the Giant-Kin quickly becomes a favorite for the competition. When his final opponent enters the arena, Arthas learns that they might be the hardest challenge he’s come across to date. As Eight and Arthas make their way through the city streets they are approached by a man named Thomas. When attempts to cause trouble fail, Thomas and his companions leave the duo confused and concerned. Rou arrives at The Hedgehog Inn, a recommendation from Azarra’s Welcome Center, and begins to make himself comfortable for the evening. As he enjoys his dinner, the door opens and a massive man begins to try and wedge himself through the opening. Eight and Arthas have arrived at the same inn.Although Arthas has to stay in the barn due to his size, he is delighted to learn of a fighting competition that is going to occur in the morning. As they often are, Eight is the first to approach and manages to convince Rou to let them join him for dinner. Rou learns very quickly that Eight likes to chat, as the warforged regales him with tales of their journey thus far. When she comments she is originally from Eulela, Rou nervously asks for recommendations in regards to places to visit and things to do. She invites him to join her for dinner and the pair learn they have far more in common than originally expected, despite the differences in their places of birth.Rou claims he is traveling to discover new cultures, people, and places. She mentions that the university of Kidohlva might be a good place to start, and it’s conveniently close to where they’ll be landing in Azarra. She warns him that some things he may be used to in Baukora won’t be available in Eulela, and if he shares his knowledge it could potentially be dangerous. Later, as Rou heads to his room to prepare for landing, he recognizes the scent of lily and sandalwood in the air. Unfortunately, this sets off its magical properties and the group is forced to deal with the result of this recklessness. Once they are free from danger, they continue their search through the area and stumble upon the ruins of a structure hundreds of years old. Engraved on this structure is the same bird symbol etched onto Eight’s plating. While trying to figure out how to introduce himself, Eight saves him the trouble and makes the first introduction. Agreeing that he seems harmless, Eight and Arthas agree on a “mutually beneficial arrangement” in which this scholar will offer them a place to stay for the night in exchange for the ability to ask them questions.The scholar, named Theodore Lawrence Briggs, enlists Arthas and Eight in an expedition deep into the Wildwoods. The Kinder-Kai lead Eight and Arthas through the woods blindfolded, the twists and turns intended to not only confuse their captives, but to provide enough time for Jokul and Rialla to be questioned and dealt with. The elves face a rare predicament, however, when they need to bring Arthas into the holding cell. Tyr is brought in to temporarily reduce the Giant-Kin’s size, which Arthas finds difficult to handle.After some questioning, Mira hands Eight the letters that Jokul and Rialla wrote in order to say good-bye. The letters indicate that Rialla has been offered an opportunity she can’t refuse, and that Jokul will be staying behind to support her. After Eight and Arthas provide responses, the pair head off to the small library for some personal research. Learning that the group wants to pass through the woods on their way to Kidohlva, the elves offer passage provided the trespassers agree to be blindfolded. Jokul and Rialla are brought ahead of their companions, their destination an elven city hidden among the trees. Upon arriving, the couple is detained by a council for questioning. One of the elves, Mira, is brought in to read their aura and determine whether or not they tell the truth.Once the interrogation passes, it is suggested that the pair talk to Tyr, a respected magic user. Mira apologizes for the behavior of her fellow Kinder-Kai and acts as a personal escort to Tyr's dwelling. Upon meeting her, Rialla discovers that the elf has powers similar to hers. Over tea, Rialla and Jokul are given an offer that must have been ordained by the fates. The group travels upstream, and as they get beyond the clearing the woods once again become unearthly silent. Following the trees, which seem to point the way, they find a stone bridge that allows them to cross the fast-moving river.As they continue deeper into the woods, the air becomes cloying and the trees now grow too close to continue with the cart. Unhitching Bessie, Eight gives it a forlorn pat before leaving it behind. Trying to disregard the tricks of the forest, Rialla discovers the group is being watched. Her attempts at diplomacy are ruined when Arthas charges in to protect her. When they reach the river they stumble upon a cabin inhabited by a woman and her young daughter.She offers them supper and the group accepts, spending the evening in comfort at the cabin. Jokul, however, finds no comfort as he comes face to face with reminders of his past. Eight manages to convince the stranger to act as a guide, as an ally that knows the woods is better than wandering aimlessly. Looking for an escape from this strange forest, Arthas climbs to the top of the trees to scan the canopy. However, he is met with an endless sea of leaves with no way out. Down below, Eight utilizes the blessing they received from the god Lohr and learns that there is water to the north. As the group heads farther into the forest, strange things start to happen. The ground explodes under their feet and weird lights flicker in the distance. Rialla starts to see things as her paranoia takes hold. Try as they might, they don’t appear to make any headway as they meander through the eerie landscape. Eight takes charge when they notice that Rialla and Arthas seem to be struggling the most. They coordinate with Jokul to mitigate the forest’s influence on Rialla.
