Trix enjoys gambling with the crew, supplementing their time with reading a really poorly written romance novel. Rou tries to engage the Captain in conversation to learn more about her, and Elaith relaxes by fishing and collecting scales for future concoctions. During their last night before reaching Nadros, Trix reveals their discovery about Liam and his research on the blood oath. The group discuss the implications of Vampire relationships, how Liam’s staff might feel about their employer’s identity and the issue of immortality. As the trio move onto the blood oath issue, Trix decides to test out one of the theories by cutting part of their arm to see what happens. The next day, as they close in on the island, Rou sees a strange rippling along the water’s surface. The group discovers the name of the ship they’ve found is The Trickster, and its Captain is not easily convinced to take the party to Nadros. Despite Rou’s best effort to goad her, it’s up to Trix to help with the negotiations by flattering her and hinting at treasure beyond their wildest dreams. Eventually, the Captain is swayed by Trix’s words and agrees to take them provided they pay 500 gold for passage. Realizing they’re a little short on funds, Elaith offers to provide services as a doctor for the duration of the voyage. The Captain declines the offer, considering the voyage would be too short to make the value of the services worth it. Rou negotiates that the trio part with 300 of their gold before the voyage, and afterward the Captain takes 50% of all treasure found on the island, as well as a case of healing potions for the crew that Elaith would brew on board.With the ship leaving in an hour and the voyage to last two weeks, the party heads into Stagg Hollow to make final preparations. Rou and Trix head to a seedy bar to try and recoup some funds via poker and pickpocketing, and Elaith purchases supplies for the potions they’ve been contracted to make. The servants repair and polish equipment and armor, and Liam offers books on plant identification and basic survival tactics. He also shares documented details on rumored and confirmed creatures that dwell on the island of Nadros. Realizing insects might be an issue, Trix convinces Elaith to help them concoct a type of repellant for the trip as well.Meanwhile, Rou takes it upon himself to help the cooking staff prepare a big meal for Liam as a show of gratitude for his assistance. One of the chefs, Duke, walks Rou through preparing suckling pig, from choosing the animal to serving at the table. Rou struggles a little in the pen, falling on his face and losing the piglet. Duke shows appreciation for Rou’s attempt but ultimately admits the slaughter wouldn’t have been necessary as one was already prepped. Rou spends all day in the kitchen preparing various dishes and roasting the pig to Liam’s tastes, all the while pestering the staff for information on Liam.That night, Liam approaches Trix in their room and shares his findings, providing them with three options for what the oath may be for. During their conversation, Liam’s behavior and attitude shift briefly, setting Trix on edge. They admit their relation to the old Emperor and in doing so, offer space for Liam to entrust Trix with a secret of his own. After a very awkward dinner, Rou is left feeling like a failure and Trix is left with troubling answers to a big question. They take time to explore the grounds and discover there are gardens and pastures full of livestock. Rou even takes time to learn how to cook and bake from Liam’s staff. Meanwhile, Trix searches for information on blood oaths in Liam’s library, finding a few things of note. When Liam asks about Trix’s interest in the subject, Trix gives a sample of their own blood so Liam can perform some hands-on research.On the fourth day of their visit, Rou checks in with Elaith on their progress. He does his best to try and get more information on Elaith’s past but the Kinder-Kai is hesitant to share. Despite this hesitation, he offers Elaith the opportunity to join him and Trix on their own journey. During dinner that night, Liam offers a solution that could address both sets of problems. He suggests they head to Nadros to search for powerful plants and an ancient fortress that is rumored to hold great knowledge. It would be a risk, as the jungles on the island are considered extremely dangerous, but worth it if they could make it to the ruins. Liam joins the party for dinner and Rou updates him on all of the group’s adventures in Baukora, including the loss of Eight. He shares their discovery of the Seven Swords but avoids details on Trix’s true identity. The group then reveals the reason for their visit: answers to an alchemical problem, information on blood oaths and how they might free the Seven Swords from the jeweled cages. Liam agrees to help, but admits it will take some time.During the conversation, something Elaith says about their predicament gives Liam pause. He asks Rou and Trix to leave him alone with Elaith for a few moments, though Trix tries their best to listen in from the hallway. As the pair whisper in the dark dining room, Liam discovers why Elaith wishes to keep their task a secret and in return they notice something odd on his breath.Before going to bed, Rou sneaks off into Liam’s gardens and sets Eight’s pack of knick-knacks under a large willow tree. As he takes a moment to reflect on his lost companion, a hedgehog comes by and seems to offer to guard what remains of Eight. Trix then sneaks over to the cage and frees the captive. However, the captive refuses to leave without their goods and the pair race off into a nearby graveyard after stealing the small trunk on the cart.Trix dashes into a crypt and the ex-captive hides behind a large gravestone just as the dust settles. Rou takes off into the graveyard as well and drops into an open grave as the guards begin their search. With their leader injured, the few guards that make their way into the cemetery eventually give up when their superstitious nature wins over. As they enter the plains they see a swarm of butterflies, which offers a moment of peace after Eight’s loss. The pair set up camp after a long day’s travel and reminisce about their journey with their former companion. Cela even joins in and shares the full story of the incident in Isha. In the morning, they are awoken by the sound of horses and people.They find that Indy & Co, sans Indy, are returning from the fortress with a contingent of the Sultan’s army. They learn that, thanks to their connections, Indy & Co. were able to convince the Sultan to help them and raided the fortress while the party dealt with Erdir. The children were able to be saved but the Emperor somehow escaped. The pair join the contingent for a time, separating at Duskhollow, and eventually use the teleporter to get to Eulela. They travel from Kidohlva, ransacked and evacuated, to Liam’s manor near the remains of Pineview. Talbain tosses a grappling hook, but it breaks. Realizing Trix is falling, Eight releases the orb into Rou’s possession and summons a portal underneath their friend. Talbain and Rou fumble a little but are able to save the orb from dropping below. Trix manages to angle themselves into the portal and tumbles out on their butt behind Rou and Talbain. As Trix is rescued, Mongo reaches out and catches Eight’s cape, leaving them to dangle high above the molten lake below.Eight takes the moment of stability to toss the ring through the portal, but watches helplessly when the toss misses its mark and the ring hurtles into the depths below. A blinding light flashes in the cavern momentarily. As everyone’s sight returns Eight slips from Mongo’s grasp. Talbain makes one more desperate attempt to grab Eight but misses the mark and the group is left to watch in horror as their friend disappears into the lava.A third color of smoke filters into the orb, the copper rings whir and make a clicking noise, the smell of sulfur emits from the orb. Behind them they hear a deep chuckle, and the owner is very large, barely able to fit within the cavern. The person thanks the party for freeing them, and helps them out of the cavern into the Dread Wastes. The stranger calls themselves Umé, and offers a boon as thanks for their freedom. Only Talbain takes them up on the offer, and Rou is broken hearted by his friend’s choice. With Erdir defeated, Talbain and Trix take an opportunity to rifle through his pockets. They divide the goods among the rest of the party and Trix tries to peer into Erdir’s magic orb but to no avail. When Rou shifts back into his human form, Talbain reveals that he also is of the shapeshifter persuasion these days due to an incident while on a job. Rou lets him know that they have a deity that watches over the packs, and he even offers Talbain to meet up with Elaine, the lone wolf he met on his travels, in case he needed any advice or had questions.When Talbain is goaded into giving Eight an upgrade, Trix comments that perhaps they should all head outside the cavern before doing so. As all this is going on, Mongo continues to stare at Erdir’s corpse, commenting that something about it smells wrong. The group becomes concerned about Mongo’s attention toward the body, and Eight attempts to cast a dispel over it. They notice a weird shimmer cascade over the body before Mongo seems calmer about the situation. However, Erdir’s body immediately shrivels as if it had been mummified.Before the group escapes through the grate in the ceiling, Trix realizes they should check Faerlin’s pockets as well. They discover that Faerlin had mechanical limbs, and Talbain is shocked to discover he doesn’t recognize the maker. When Eight tries to discern if Faerlin’s ring is magical, they hear a voice just before the cavern floor splits open. After being stabbed in the back, Trix frees themself from Faerlin and notices that Faerlin does not appear to be ensorceled. When they ask why Faerlin would stab them, he reveals that the Emperor would not have abandoned them at the outpost without reason. The pair of Adar-Kai briefly engage in hand-to-hand combat before Eight utilizes the orb to cast a deadly spell at Faerlin. Unknown to Eight, this causes a pale light to glow from the gaps in their plating. Faerlin’s next attack brings Trix down, but pays dearly for his decision when Mongo joins the fray.With Faerlin defeated, Erdir teleports into the cavern. Rou seizes the opportunity to invoke his new patron and shift into his wolf form, which reveals his black fur is broken by a single white circle of fur on his left shoulder. Talbain chases after him and quickly closes the gap just before Erdir casts a spell to immobilize Rou. Eight collapses the ceiling on top of Erdir, the gaps between their plating glowing brighter, just as Cela brings Trix back to consciousness. A lantern illuminates the cell and reveals to Trix and Talbain that Faerlin is alive and well. It seems he’s come to escort Trix to their “proper chambers”, all the while shifting their eyes to the ceiling. Trix catches on to Faerlin’s hints and the pair agree to bring Talbain on as “another servant” so that Talbain can escape too. Faerlin escorts Trix and Talbain out of the cell through a hidden door in the floor, but they make a point to pull Talbain aside. He threatens Talbain with execution if Trix is harmed, but Talbain doesn’t seem bothered. When Faerlin assures the pair that The Dragon is not monitoring the tunnel, Trix brings Talbain up to speed.In the treasure vault, Rou sets Cela on a nearby chest before heading over to the pile of gear. He begins to change out of the borrowed clothes and notices Mongo holding a black furred pelt. It doesn’t take him long to realize that it’s his pelt, treated and prepared to be used as a rug. While Rou is absorbed in his thoughts, Eight learns something new about magic from Cela.
