Ep 422Thermal Management: The Future of Automotive Refrigerants and Technology [THA 422]

Thanks to our Partners, NAPA TRACS, and Today's Class Recorded at the 45th annual Mobile Air Climate Systems Conference (MACS 2025) in Orlando, Florida, this episode dives into the evolving world of thermal management in vehicles. Our panel discusses the shift from traditional air conditioning to a more advanced approach, driven by the growing complexity of modern vehicles, especially EVs. They explore why maintaining optimal temperatures for batteries, electric motors, and other components is just as critical as passenger comfort. The conversation also covers alternative refrigerants, particularly blends, as a way to boost efficiency, reduce environmental impact, and adapt to changing battery technologies. With these advancements, the need for technician training and industry adaptation is greater than ever. Our experts emphasize the importance of collaboration across the industry to ensure a smooth transition and deliver effective solutions for both OEMs and aftermarket service providers. Fuel Trims [E175] - Diagnosing the Aftermarket A to Z

bonus

Thanks to our Partner, NAPA Autotech NAPA Autotech’s team of ASE Master Certified Instructors are conducting over 1,200 classes covering 28 automotive topics. To see a selection, go to napaautotech.com for more details.Contact InformationEmail Matt: [email protected] the Aftermarket A - Z YouTube Channel Introduction:Fuel trims are a common topic in professional forums, classes, and diagnostics, often leading to bold diagnostic decisions.Matt shares his experience of quickly diagnosing vehicle issues using fuel trims, even before leaving the parking lot.Key Challenges in Discussing Fuel Trims:The more you learn about fuel trims, the more nuanced and complex the topic becomes. It’s difficult to generalize fuel trim behavior across all vehicles, as each system has unique characteristics.Fuel trims are just one piece of data that must be factored into a broader diagnostic process. What Are Fuel Trims?Definition: Fuel trims are adjustments made to the base fuel schedule by the engine control unit (ECU).Matt credits Matt Ragsdale on iATN for one of the best explanations he’s seen. Two Primary Fuel Systems:Speed Density Systems:Relies on the Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor and engine RPM as primary inputs.Engine control algorithms tend to be more complex.Mass Airflow (MAF) Systems:Uses the Mass Airflow Sensor (MAF) and crank sensor (RPM) as primary inputs.Simpler in design compared to speed density systems.Modern systems often blend elements of both speed density and MAF systems.Closing Thoughts:Matt emphasizes the importance of understanding the nuances of fuel trims and how they vary across different vehicle systems. He plans to dive deeper into the topic in future episodes, providing more detailed insights and practical examples. The Aftermarket Radio Network: https://aftermarketradionetwork.com/Remarkable Results Radio Podcast with Carm Capriotto: Advancing the Aftermarket by Facilitating Wisdom Through Story Telling and Open Discussion. https://remarkableresults.biz/Diagnosing the Aftermarket A to Z with Matt Fanslow: From Diagnostics to Metallica and Mental Health, Matt Fanslow is Lifting the Hood on Life. https://mattfanslow.captivate.fm/Business by the Numbers with Hunt Demarest: Understand the Numbers of Your Business with CPA Hunt Demarest. https://huntdemarest.captivate.fm/The Auto Repair Marketing Podcast with Kim and Brian Walker: Marketing Experts Brian & Kim Walker Work with Shop Owners to Take it to the Next Level. https://autorepairmarketing.captivate.fm/The Weekly Blitz with Chris Cotton: Weekly Inspiration with Business Coach Chris Cotton from AutoFix - Auto Shop Coaching. https://chriscotton.captivate.fm/Speak Up! A Billion Monkeys vs Goals [E174] - Diagnosing the Aftermarket A to Z

bonus

Thanks to our Partner, NAPA Autotech NAPA Autotech’s team of ASE Master Certified Instructors are conducting over 1,200 classes covering 28 automotive topics. To see a selection, go to napaautotech.com for more details.Contact InformationEmail Matt: [email protected] the Aftermarket A - Z YouTube Channel Key Topics Discussed:The Infinite Monkey Theorem:Matt uses the analogy of infinite monkeys typing on typewriters to explain the importance of clear communication and direction in achieving goals.Just as monkeys randomly typing will eventually produce meaningful work, employees without clear guidance will struggle to achieve desired outcomes.Leadership and Communication in the Workplace:Leaders (owners, managers) must set clear goals, expectations, and provide a path to achieve them.Vague goals like "make more money" or "break records" without a clear plan lead to confusion and inefficiency.Employees need tools, resources, and direction to succeed, rather than being left to "bang away on typewriters" hoping to get it right. The Role of Communication in Relationships:Clear communication is essential not just in the workplace but in all relationships.Without expressing needs, goals, and expectations, misunderstandings and inefficiencies arise.Direct communication, though uncomfortable at first, improves over time and leads to better outcomes.Translating These Ideas to Auto Repair:In the repair shop, having a clear diagnostic and repair process is crucial.Veteran technicians often take their knowledge for granted, making it challenging to mentor newcomers.Providing resources (e.g., links to training, manufacturer guidelines) helps less experienced technicians build foundational knowledge. The Importance of Following Procedures:Referencing Technical Service Manuals (TSM) or Factory Manuals (TFM) is critical for both learning and legal protection.Following established procedures ensures consistency and provides a fallback in case of disputes or litigation.Key Takeaways:Clear Communication is Key: Whether in leadership, relationships, or auto repair, expressing goals and expectations clearly is essential for success.Provide Direction and Resources: Employees and technicians need more than vague goals—they need tools, training, and a clear path to follow.Follow Established Procedures: Using manufacturer guidelines (TFM) ensures quality repairs and protects against legal issues.Encourage Curiosity and Learning: Sharing resources and fostering curiosity helps technicians grow and improve their skills.Memorable Quotes:"If you don't set goals and expectations, you're essentially handing your employees typewriters and asking them to just start banging away on the keys, hoping they get your idea right.""The moral of this episode is: Don't expect miracles without clear communication and direction.""Direct communication, though uncomfortable at first, gets easier over time and leads to better outcomes."The Aftermarket Radio Network: https://aftermarketradionetwork.com/Remarkable Results Radio Podcast with Carm Capriotto: Advancing the Aftermarket by Facilitating Wisdom Through Story Telling and Open Discussion. https://remarkableresults.biz/Diagnosing the Aftermarket A to Z with Matt Fanslow: From Diagnostics to Metallica and Mental Health, Matt Fanslow is Lifting the Hood on Life. https://mattfanslow.captivate.fm/Business by the Numbers with Hunt Demarest: Understand the Numbers of Your Business with CPA Hunt Demarest. https://huntdemarest.captivate.fm/The Auto Repair Marketing Podcast with Kim and Brian Walker: Marketing Experts Brian & Kim Walker Work with Shop Owners to Take it to the Next Level. https://autorepairmarketing.captivate.fm/The Weekly Blitz with Chris Cotton: Weekly Inspiration with Business Coach Chris Cotton from AutoFix - Auto Shop Coaching. https://chriscotton.captivate.fm/Speak Up! Ford APIM and Jeep WCM Adventure [E173] - Diagnosing the Aftermarket A to Z

bonus

Thanks to our Partner, NAPA Autotech In this episode, Matt Fanslow dives into two detailed vehicle diagnostic and repair stories, highlighting the challenges and solutions involved in modern automotive repair. The episode is packed with technical insights, troubleshooting tips, and lessons learned from real-world scenarios.Key Topics Covered:2013 Ford Edge SYNC System Connectivity IssueProblem: Intermittent cell phone disconnection from the SYNC system.Diagnostic Process:No DTCs (Diagnostic Trouble Codes) found.Matt linked his phone to the system and tested it without issues.Discovered the Accessory Protocol Interface Module (APIM) had never been updated since the vehicle was manufactured.Challenges:Attempted to update the APIM using Ford’s FDRS (Ford Diagnostic and Repair System).Encountered issues with a USB driver link and access problems. After multiple attempts, the SYNC system displayed a black screen.Resolution:Successfully updated the APIM after performing a capacitive discharge (CD) and updating the Front Control Interface Module (FCIM).Verified the update through Ford’s SYNC website and Motorcraft service. The client confirmed the connectivity issues were resolved.Takeaway: Always verify software updates and be prepared for unexpected challenges during programming. Persistence and proper tools are key.2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Wireless Control Module (WCM) ReplacementProblem: After replacing the WCM, the shop couldn’t add keys to the system.Diagnostic Process:The shop used an aftermarket scan tool and a dealer-provided PIN code to replace the WCM.Attempted to add keys but failed, suspecting the keys were locked.Matt suggested trying an aftermarket key, which was successfully added, making the vehicle drivable.Challenges:Discovered the PIN code provided by the dealer was incorrect. The Passive Entry Module (PEM) required a matching PIN code to share data with the WCM.The shop had to replace the WCM again with the correct PIN code.Resolution:Matt used an Xhorse tool to unlock and renew the original keys.Successfully added the original keys and performed a PEM replacement. The vehicle was fully functional.Takeaway: Accurate information (e.g., correct PIN codes) is critical for successful repairs. Proxy systems add complexity, and having the right tools (e.g., immobilizer tools) is essential.Key Lessons from the Episode:Importance of Software Updates:Outdated software can cause compatibility issues, especially with newer devices (e.g., iPhones).Always check for updates and follow proper procedures when programming modules.Challenges with Aftermarket Tools:Aftermarket tools can have limitations, especially with complex systems like proxy key systems.OEM tools and manufacturer resources are often necessary for advanced diagnostics and programming.Persistence and Problem-Solving:Complex issues may require multiple troubleshooting steps and collaboration with other professionals.Filing Service Improvement Requests (SIRs) and reaching out to dealers or manufacturers can help resolve persistent issues.Client Communication:Keeping clients informed throughout the diagnostic and repair process builds trust and ensures satisfaction.Action Items:Ford Edge:Verify the APIM update was successful and ensure the phone connectivity issue is fully resolved.Jeep Grand Cherokee:Properly program the original keys by sharing key data from the WCM with the Passive Entry Module (PEM).Final Thoughts:This episode highlights the intricacies of modern vehicle diagnostics and the importance of staying informed, using the right tools, and maintaining a problem-solving mindset. Whether dealing with software updates or complex proxy systems, persistence and attention to detail are key to successful repairs.Next Episode: Stay tuned for more technical content and real-world repair stories on Diagnosing the Aftermarket, A to Z!NAPA Autotech’s team of ASE Master Certified Instructors are conducting over 1,200 classes covering 28 automotive topics. Because every great shop deserves marketing that’s just as great. In this insightful podcast episode, Coach Chris Cotton delves into the evolving dynamics of auto repair shops by exploring the transition of technicians into service advisor roles. Initially harboring skepticism about this shift, Chris has become a strong advocate, recognizing the distinct advantages that technicians offer when they step into advisory positions. He emphasizes that their deep technical knowledge and adept problem-solving abilities can significantly enhance the customer experience. Chris underscores the critical role of comprehensive training and mentorship programs in equipping technicians with the necessary communication and interpersonal skills required for their new roles. He acknowledges common concerns, such as the potential depletion of technical talent on the shop floor and the financial implications of such transitions. However, he presents a compelling argument that elevating technicians to service advisor roles can lead to increased customer trust, improved shop efficiency, and ultimately, higher revenue. The episode, sponsored by Shop Marketing Pros, serves as a call to action for shop owners to prioritize the growth and development of their employees. By investing in their workforce, shop owners can cultivate a more knowledgeable and versatile team, capable of driving the business forward in a competitive market. Chris's insights provide a roadmap for successfully navigating this transition, ensuring that both the shop and its employees thrive.Introduction to the Episode (00:00:19)Changing Perspectives on Technicians as Advisors (00:01:30)The Role of Technicians in Service (00:02:53)Personal Experience with Technicians (00:03:53)Staffing Challenges in Auto Repair (00:06:10)Understanding the Service Advisor Role (00:08:31)Why Technicians Make Great Advisors (00:09:41)Concerns About Transitioning Technicians (00:12:05)Training and Support for Technicians (00:16:46)Business Case for Promoting Technicians (00:17:42)Future Planning for Service Advisors (00:18:50)Recap and Call to Action (00:19:56)Connect with Chris:[email protected]: 940.400.1008www.autoshopcoaching.comFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/AutoFixAutoShopCoachingYoutube: https://bit.ly/3ClX0ae #autofixautoshopcoaching #autofixbeautofixing #autoshopprofits #autoshopprofit #autoshopprofitsfirst #autoshopleadership #autoshopmanagement #autorepairshopcoaching #autorepairshopconsulting #autorepairshoptraining #autorepairshop #autorepair #serviceadvisor #serviceadvisorefficiency #autorepairshopmarketing #theweeklyblitz #autofix #shopmarketingpros #autofixautoshopcoachingbook

Aiming for Supermedium [E029] - Speak Up! Effective Communication

bonus

Thank You To Our Partners The Institute, AutoFlow, AutoLeap, Shop Dog Marketing, In-Bound:In our episode today - Craig introduces listeners to a concept that has helped to shape his own journey, the concept of being “Supermedium.”This concept is related to fitness goals and how people often do not focus their goals on very specific objectives - which can lead to wasted effort and actually hinder you in many cases. The goal is to be strong enough—or said differently, have the right strength for a specific task. SUPERMEDIUM.There are a few references Craig brings into this conversation - one of which is from the book “Be Useful: Seven Tools for Life,” by Arnold Schwarzenegger.Craig quotes a statement that Arnold makes on the importance of coming into strength training with a clear goal - and ties this to coming into communication training with a clear goal as well.(Craig also highly recommends that book by Arnold via audio book.)The link is here: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0C1HR5D9S?ref_=cm_sw_r_ffobk_cp_ud_dp_KKT0YM7XDFW30C7FNNXM&skipTwisterOG=1&bestFormat=true&newOGT=1Just how does this apply to our communication goals? Craig often cites that “Toastmasters is his gym’ and that communication skills can atrophy just like any muscle in the body. Listen in to hear how him discuss some of his own fitness goals and overlays that with what he has seen as he journeys with others on their communication journey too. This episode will have you thinking about what it is you want to accomplish on your communication journey and should be encouraging for those who might feel a bit too self critical if they aren't achieving an ideal they have imagined.Watch Full Video EpisodeJoin Our Virtual Toastmasters Club: https://remarkableresults.biz/toastmastersToday’s Word of the Day:UntenableAdjSomething, such as a position, excuse, or situation, that is described as untenable cannot be defended against attack or criticism.Thank You To Our Partners The Institute, AutoFlow, AutoLeap, Shop Dog Marketing, In-Bound:The Institute at WeAreTheInstitute.com. "Stop stressing over your business, you deserve a good night's sleep. Ep 419Future Proofing Your Shop: A 2025 Auto Repair Outlook [THA 419]

Thanks to our Partners, NAPA TRACS, and Today's Class The "Great Correction" refers to a shift in the industry after a period of relative ease, likely due to pandemic related factors. The key concerns include a decrease in online searches for auto repair, rising costs, increased competition from dealerships, labor shortages, rapid advancements in technology (EVs, ADAS, AI), and the need to explore new revenue opportunities like key services, ADAS calibration, tires, and truck repairs. These issues suggest that the strategies that worked in the past may no longer be effective. The Steps Before a Low Score [E028] - Speak Up! Effective Communication

bonus

Thank You To Our Partners The Institute, AutoFlow, AutoLeap, Shop Dog Marketing, In-Bound:In this episode, Craig is concise as he reflects on the timeless wisdom of Martin Luther King Jr. and how his principles of nonviolent conflict resolution remain highly relevant today. Inspired by recent readings of King’s works, specifically his iconic Letter from Birmingham Jail, Craig explores how these lessons can be applied to resolving conflicts in everyday life—even in situations as modern as addressing negative reviews. This thoughtful discussion acknowledges the historical context of King’s writings while highlighting their enduring value in promoting understanding, negotiation, and meaningful resolution.Watch Full Video EpisodeKey Points Discussed:Craig’s Appreciation for MLK’s Legacy: Acknowledging King’s brilliance as a leader, communicator, and writer, Craig emphasizes the enduring relevance of his concepts and principles. The Four Steps of a Nonviolent Campaign (as outlined in Letter from Birmingham Jail):Collection of Facts: Ensure injustices are present and verified.Negotiation: Open dialogue with a willingness to find common ground.Self-Purification: Prepare yourself to act constructively and maintain the ability to return to negotiation.Direct Action: Take deliberate action aimed at fostering a return to negotiation. The Word of the Day:Unfettered.Adj - Not controlled by anyone or anything. UninhibitedModern Applications:Craig draws parallels between these steps and common missteps in conflict resolution today, such as skipping fact-gathering and jumping straight to retaliation—like leaving a low review without understanding the full story. He discusses how these missed steps can lead to escalation rather than resolution.Takeaways for Listeners:People care about how much you know only after they know how much you care.Applying MLK’s principles to situations like resolving a customer complaint or an unjust review can model constructive engagement and encourage others to seek facts, negotiation, and resolution. This episode is a thoughtful tribute to King’s enduring legacy and a practical guide for applying his lessons to resolve conflicts with empathy and integrity.Links & Resources:Letter from Birmingham Jail by Martin Luther King Jr.Join Craig as he unpacks these timeless lessons and their power to transform the way we approach conflicts in our personal and professional lives.Thank You To Our Partners The Institute, AutoFlow, AutoLeap, Shop Dog Marketing, In-Bound:The Institute at WeAreTheInstitute.com. "Stop stressing over your business, you deserve a good night's sleep. Because every great shop deserves marketing that’s just as great. In this episode of "The Weekly Blitz," Coach Chris Cotton from Auto Fix Auto Shop Coaching delves deeply into the critical topic of men's emotional health, shedding light on the often-overlooked societal pressures that inhibit emotional expression among men. Coach Cotton begins by exploring how traditional societal norms and expectations have historically dictated that men should be stoic and unemotional, leading many to suppress their feelings. This suppression, he explains, can result in emotional bottlenecks, where unresolved emotions accumulate and eventually manifest as stress, anxiety, or even depression. Coach Cotton highlights the unhealthy coping mechanisms that many men resort to as a consequence of this emotional suppression, such as substance abuse, aggression, or withdrawal from social interactions. He stresses the importance of recognizing these patterns and seeking healthier outlets for emotional expression. A significant portion of the discussion is dedicated to the necessity of building supportive networks. Coach Cotton underscores the value of having a community or a circle of friends and family who provide a safe space for men to express their emotions without judgment. He warns against the dangers of toxic relationships that can exacerbate feelings of inadequacy or reinforce harmful stereotypes about masculinity.Furthermore, Coach Cotton advocates for men to embrace vulnerability as a strength rather than a weakness. He encourages men to open up about their struggles and emotions, which can lead to deeper connections and a more fulfilling life. Finding one's purpose is another key theme in the episode. Coach Cotton explains that having a sense of purpose can provide direction and motivation, helping men navigate life's challenges with resilience and optimism. Finally, he emphasizes the importance of celebrating small victories. By acknowledging and appreciating these achievements, men can build confidence and foster a healthier emotional landscape. This, in turn, contributes to both personal and professional success, as a balanced emotional state enhances decision-making, creativity, and interpersonal relationships.Overall, Coach Chris Cotton's insights offer a comprehensive guide for men seeking to improve their emotional well-being and lead more fulfilling lives.Introduction to the Episode (00:00:12)Coach Chris Cotton introduces the episode and its purpose in supercharging auto repair businesses.Promise of Support (00:01:16)Chris assures listeners he understands men's emotional struggles and aims to address them in this episode.Understanding Men's Thoughts (00:02:24)Exploration of the complexities behind what men are thinking and the burdens they carry. The Challenge of Expressing Feelings (00:03:34)Discussion on societal pressures that prevent men from expressing their emotions.Emotional Bottlenecks (00:04:53)Chris highlights how men are conditioned to suppress emotions, leading to overwhelming burdens.Avoiding Conflict and Unhealthy Outlets (00:06:02)Men often shut down or resort to unhealthy coping mechanisms instead of expressing feelings.Lack of Tools for Emotional Expression (00:07:26)Men struggle to find the language and tools to process their emotions effectively. The Stigma of Vulnerability (00:08:43)Fear of ridicule prevents men from opening up about their feelings to trusted circles.Identifying Toxic Relationships (00:09:50)Chris emphasizes the importance of surrounding oneself with supportive rather than negative influences. The Importance of Purpose (00:10:56)Discussion on how having a purpose is crucial for men's emotional well-being and motivation.Consequences of Losing Purpose (00:12:06)Exploration of how a lack of purpose can lead to
