S1 Ep 35Ep 035 - Mark Kendall - Founder and Lead Guitarist of the Band Great White Shares His Experience, Strength and Hope

Summary Mark Kendall, a guitar player and sober advocate, shares his journey of recovery and how he helps others in their sobriety. He discusses the importance of working on oneself, identifying triggers, and staying sober one day at a time. Mark emphasizes the power of fellowship and the impact of sharing experiences with others who can relate. He also highlights the value of gratitude lists as a tool for maintaining sobriety. In this conversation, Mark K and Ange discuss various aspects of addiction recovery and personal growth. They explore the power of gratitude, the importance of working through trauma, and the journey of becoming a better person. They also touch on the significance of contribution and living a meaningful life. Mark shares his experiences of witnessing miracles in recovery and the joy of helping others. They discuss the impact of recovery on the body and the transformative nature of the 12 steps. They emphasize the importance of self-reflection and the humanizing effect of sharing mistakes. Finally, they discuss the concept of tough love for loved ones of addicts and the availability of a better life. Takeaways Working on oneself and identifying triggers are crucial in maintaining sobriety. Fellowship and sharing experiences with others who can relate are powerful tools in recovery. Staying sober one day at a time and celebrating milestones can provide motivation and encouragement. Gratitude lists can help shift focus to the positive aspects of life and aid in maintaining sobriety. Practicing gratitude can have a profound impact on mental health and well-being. Working through trauma and addressing buried emotions is essential for personal growth and recovery. Becoming a better person requires self-reflection, character development, and a commitment to treating oneself and others with kindness and compassion. Contributing to the well-being of others and making a positive impact in the world brings a deep sense of fulfillment and purpose. Living the dash, embracing the present moment, and making the most of one's time on Earth is a powerful mindset for personal growth and fulfillment. Witnessing the transformation and recovery of others can be a deeply rewarding and inspiring experience. Helping others and making a difference in their lives can create a natural high and a sense of purpose. Recovery and personal growth have a profound impact on the body, mind, and spirit. The 12 steps provide a transformative journey of self-discovery, healing, and personal development. Sharing mistakes and vulnerabilities humanizes individuals and fosters connection and understanding. Tough love can be an effective approach for the loved ones of addicts, setting boundaries and encouraging them to seek help. Recovery offers the opportunity for a better life, free from the pain and chaos of addiction, and filled with joy, purpose, and fulfillment. Mark was born into a musically gifted family. He grew up in Huntington Beach, California. His father played jazz trumpet; his mother sang her heart out to jazz tunes before adoring audiences. His grandfather, too, was a virtuoso on the piano. Citing Jimi Hendrix, Cream, and The Doors as early influences, Kendall's passion and natural abilities got him hooked on guitar. Since 1982, the Great White sound has captivated audiences worldwide with crushing blues-based guitar riffs and swagger that invokes an emotional high for anyone that listens. Best known for their GRAMMY-nominated Best Hard Rock Performance hit, the gold-selling "Once Bitten, Twice Shy," (over 900,000 copies of this single alone) Great White has sold over 10 million albums worldwide, has six Top 100 Billboard hits, nine Top 200 Billboard albums, two multi-platinum albums, five gold records and clocked the top of MTV video four times. For Mark, while the music business has changed dramatically since he first picked up a guitar, he still believes in human connections and imperfections. Which is why he is a perfect fit for our Coffee and Conversation Podcast. Mark is a solid supporter of MusiCares, whereas his relentless efforts to help those seeking a sober life have been expressed in feature stories on Fox News and numerous national radio programs. He is a baseball enthusiast (go Dodgers) and boasts professional skills in billiards and poker, all of which he showcased on the popular Joe Rogan Experience podcast. S1 Ep 23Ep 023 - A guide to help children process stress, anxiety, trauma with author Nicolle Natttrass, CAC II - Book Club #4 with Recovery Advocate Network

Today, we welcome Nicolle Nattrass straight from Canada - the author of Just the Two of Us: A Safe Place for Tender Hearts to Land. Parents, teachers, counselors, and social workers are often at a loss about how to help young children who can't adequately describe how they feel after experiencing anxiety, stress, or trauma. That does not diminish the need for children to be able to express themselves in a safe, non-threatening environment and feel connected to someone who cares. Nicolle Nattrass, an Addiction Counselor and world-renowned Journaling expert, shares how to connect with children in a way that allows for creativity and healing in "Just the Two of Us." She came to what she calls tender-hearted work following a personal trauma experienced by her child. Although her son did not suffer serious physical injuries from a car accident, the emotional and mental impact was significantly life-changing. Nicolle worked diligently, through the use of a journal, to help her son explore his feelings, thoughts, and ideas—in a safe, creative, and fun manner that she details in this gentle guide. "Just the Two of Us" is a tender-hearted guide on how to use Creative Journaling as a key recovery tool to help children (age 4 and up) to connect and process stress, anxiety, trauma." I have. The light slowly fades as you walk down into the cavern. It's pitch black. It's fun at first. But then…. The realization hits you that the space is getting smaller and smaller. Your pace slows. Your steps forward and down the slope cautious and tentative. Finally the space is so small that you must crawl chest pressed against the ground, just mere inches separating your back from the roof. Your arms seem frozen. You. Are. Trapped. No one can see you. Everyone believes you're safer there in the cave. Hi. My name is Shayne and my pronouns are he/ they. But only a few know that. I am "in the closet" with one tentative arm bracing against the doorway to freedom. Not being "out" or even being only partially out is excruciating. I come from a conservative - republican - Baptist family. I was part of a small Baptist church in the rural United States beginning in infancy. Somehow, I still became the gender-nonconforming queer dude that I am. I am trapped. I am trapped in my family. They are invested and vocal about their faith and morals. They judge any non-heterosexual or non-cisgendered identity as a sin and abomination. They turn the tv off when any of these "lifestyles" are represented. What you have to know is - still - I love them. How can I have to choose between "who I am, who I want to be, how I view the world, who I love", and… my family? Maybe you too struggle with your family. Maybe they say hurtful things to you or to others that make your environment uncomfortable or make it unsafe to be who you truly are. Maybe some have told you - "just tell them, just come out already". But it isn't safe for you to do so. The walls close in. I am trapped in my social sphere. Community can be so healing and it can be so traumatizing. In my social sphere a constant barrage of opinions and racism and ableism and homophobia and transphobia assault me from every side. Those who say they love others spew hate and hurtful words at everyone who is different from them even in the smallest of ways. "Her hair shouldn't be that color or that short." "Why doesn't she wear more dresses?" "How could she let those words/songs/shows/etc… be in her life". Maybe you too face hate around you. You face it with your friends. You face it in your church. You face it in your work environment. You face it with the law. You face it… Every day you get up knowing another headline, leader, or even friend will say or do something against another person because of their race, their dress, their disability, their sexual identity, their gender identity, their faith, for WHO THEY ARE. The walls close in. I am trapped by my body. It betrays me. It doesn't fit. It doesn't look the way I know it should look. It has the wrong parts. Every month the gender dysphoria. Every day trying to find the clothes that will feel right. Every day looking at myself in the mirror and wanting to cry because the body looking back at me isn't mine. Maybe you too deal with body dysphoria. Maybe since you were young you felt uncomfortable in your own skin. Maybe the clothes you are "supposed" to wear don't represent you. Maybe the hair you want isn't allowed. Maybe the name you were given grates on you when you see it or hear it. The walls close in. I am trapped in my shame. The faith, the morals, the judgment, the hate that looms over me is never ending. And the hate starts to become mine. I start to hate myself. My body. My brain. My thoughts. My feelings. My desires…. Myself. Maybe you too are developing a hate for yourself. Maybe you hide yourself away and isolate from others. Maybe you do things that hurt because you feel disgusted. Maybe you have lashed out at others who don't fit the mold because you don't want to admit who you are. The walls close in. By now I imagine you're thinking well great that's a very uplifting and inspirational message - NOT. But the truth

Her book, Making Friends with Monsters, tells the story of 12-year-old Sam as he learns to deal with many mental health and family challenges, such as suicide, addiction, abuse, self-harm, financial hardship, and more. I loved this book so much that I have recommended it to Mom's groups as a Book Club read to help them learn new language to use with their children around emotions and mental health, therapists, treatment centers, and I even took a stab at submitting it to Oprah to see if there was a shot of getting it into her book club – it is that impactful. S1 Ep 4Ep 004 - Suicide Awareness & Project Semicolon with Recovery Advocate Network (Webinar Rebroadcast)

Welcome to Episode 4 from RAN's Suicide Awareness Month Webinar hosted on September 21st, 2022. Portions of this episode were redacted due to the sensitive nature of the content at the request of the individuals who participated. This episode kicked off with three individuals sharing their personal stories about the semicolon tattoo. Camille got a semicolon tattoo after her friend lost their struggle with mental illness, and she shared how it helps her open the door to difficult conversations about the challenges of suicidal ideations, suicide, and the grief surrounding suicidal loss. Brittany then shared the story of her semi-colon lotus hybrid tattoo, her struggle with suicide attempts, and the meaning of the lotus flower. Kylee shared about The Butterfly Project, which aims to help those struggling with self-harm, and why she chose a butterfly semicolon tattoo to celebrate the first anniversary of her not self-harming. She shared that she loves semicolon tattoos because they allow her to be in community with those who are safe to talk to about historically taboo topics – suicide and self-harm. We then heard David's journey through grieving the loss of his son to suicide. He shared its impact on him and provided his thoughts on how individuals can comfort those during difficult times. Finally, one of our celebrity supporters, Spencer Garrett, spoke out about mental health and why we must take it seriously now. Wow, this was an emotional episode for me to edit and publish. I have struggled with suicidal ideations and self-harm due to severe childhood abuse and my kidnapping/hostage experience. Additionally, what David said about grief hit home as I remember the months following the loss of my firstborn son, who was stillborn 23 years ago, and the loss of my service dog, Kuba, earlier this year. Which reminds me, if this episode was triggering to you, we encourage you to contact your support system, therapist, national and community support groups, the Global Crisis Text Line by texting 741741, and/or if in the US, dialing 988 to reach the Suicide & Crisis lifeline.
