Ep 72Episode 72 - Isobel Tamati - Recovery & Resilience: Back from the Brink of Death
Show Notes – Isobel had an aneurysm and a massive stroke two and a half years ago and was critical for weeks and was not expected to survive. Due to a medical blunder by the receiving Doctor in the emergency ward it took 18 hours to get into surgery. Waited 6 hours in the emergency department waiting room as the doctor believed she had a migraine. Got a paramedic friend to help her. Finally got a CT Scan – and saw that there was massive bleeding on the brain. Then went to Wellington Hospital for the surgery. Had a stent put into her brain to drain the blood. Also put a coil into the brain to stop the bleeding. Spent the next month in and out of ICU fighting for her life. Having brain spasms and losing consciousness. Spent three months in hospital in total. One month in Wellington and two months in New Plymouth. After pushing from Lisa she was tested and diagnosed with severe sleep apnoea and put on oxygen. Lisa started studying hyperbaric oxygen therapy. Isobel finds it astounding to hear the whole story as she was unconscious and unaware of a lot of it. She had no memory, she couldn't speak, she couldn't control any functions in her body. Her first memory was inside the hyperbaric oxygen chamber. Took her down to 1 ½ atmospheres which is ideal for brain injury. Given 100% medical grade oxygen which hyper oxygenates the body. You can take up to 7 time the normal amount of oxygen. Also permeates the blood brain barrier faster. Isobel said that it is isn't painful but you do have to be very patient. She is able to take her iPad in with her and she listens to podcasts. Life is now back to complete normal most of the time. But there are still some areas where she struggles. She can do everything but it takes twice of long and there is a lot of effort required. She can walk slowly for a 1 km now. She has had to relearn all the normal movement patterns. Because of her age doctors were not confident she would be able to be fully rehabilitated. One of the keys to that process of having parallel bars. They were gifted to them by a family friend. Spend a good hour on the bars per day. Her biggest success to date is that she got her drivers licence back. Lisa felt it was important that Isobel could feel in control of own destine which driving would give her. Still working towards full independence but definitely working towards that. Her goal is to be healthier than she was before. Goes to the gym five days a week. Lifting weights. You lose muscle mass and bone density because of the lack of movement at first. She has just had a bone density test and she is off the scales high. It is important when you are older to face challenges. Isobel says she needed someone to help to push her. She had to be relentless in her training because that is the only way back. When you let things go it is a long way back. To take away the goals and achievements it to die. We need to feel like we are going forward. Let's make the most out of every day. It is the discipline of today that helps us to be stronger tomorrow. Rest and recovery is important too but in a rhythm with working out. Never give up. You don't know how far you can go. A few months into her recovery she crewed with Lisa when she ran across the North Island with her husband and business partner to raise money for a friend's charity. That friend, who has previously appeared on the podcast, died in an accident during a half marathon. Lisa is currently writing a book about her Mum's recovery. Ep 71Episode 71 - Cushla Young - Seizing the Day in Paradise
Show Notes – Cushla Young Lisa and Cushla met on one of Lisa's running retreats. Started running half marathons 7 – 8 year ago. Had run three by the time she met Lisa. She went to one of Lisa's seminars and was really inspired. She booked a weekend retreat and then helped out on the next retreat. At that point she started doing full marathons. Talk about not being natural athletes. Also talk about identifying yourself as "a runner." It wasn't about speed, or being at the front of the pack, it was about running and what it did for her outlook on life. Lisa tells the story of when both Cushla and Lisa's Mums were in the same hospital at the same time. Cushla and her husband turned up with a big bowl and a plan, and kindly washed Lisa's Mum's hair. It was a very touching moment of compassion and friendship. A story of Carpe Diem – seize the day. Cushla and her husband Richard both had good jobs, loved their lives in New Plymouth and weren't thinking about any big change. Their friends called up from Tonga and suggested they pack up their dog and come on over in order to manage their second resort. It took a month to make up their minds and then Cushla took a year's sabbatical from her teaching career. Cushla and Lisa both refer to their fertility issues. When you don't have kids you have got to make your own lives; you have to be a bit more active in finding joy in life. Lisa asks how the reality compares to the fantasy we all have of running away to a tropical island. 12 bungalows and a restaurant at the resort. It is very isolated being based on one of the outlying islands. 18 x 1 kilometres in size. Their local town has one shop – a cross between a $2 shop and a bad dairy. There are long hours and not many days off. Most of the food comes via ship from New Zealand or the main island of Tonga so they have to plan their menus and supplies two months in advance. There is some fresh fruit available. Most people in the island grow food for themselves not for supplying others. When things break you can't get them fixed quickly and that puts pressure on things. The only water is rain water supply so you have to preserve this. They have fun with the guests. Often they arrive quite stressed and it is fascinating to watch people begin to relax over the first few days. Humpback whale season starts mid July. They travel from Antarctica to give birth and take care of their babies. They send out eight boats a day with only four people in the water at any one time. The whales are very curious. It takes your breath away. Whales have a deep mindful eye. Each whale pod has a song and it changes slightly each season. Cushla is not a natural outdoorsy adventurous person. The first time she went swimming with the whales she had a Go Pro with her. She ended up recording a sound track of her hyperventilating. Then she stopped breathing for about two minutes when the whales turned up. They have to steal moments in the day to go and enjoy the island. Some days are easier to do that than others. She has realised that this year is about chilling out and just enjoying the experience. She learned to change her mindset and realise that she doesn't have to be the best resort manager the world has ever seen. Tells the story of the two wolves inside us. The bad wolf and the good wolf are always fighting inside. Which wolf wins? The one that you feed. You still have bad days – even if you live in paradise; you're just a bit hotter. Realise you don't have to get tangled up in the things that don't really matter. Learning to focus on the joy of being on the island, of meeting people from all over the world, cooking an amazing meal, spending time with her husband. Talks about struggling a little without the large support network that she has back home in New Zealand. She talks about having to help herself through hard times. Lisa talks about how nature helps to ground her and to cope when times get hard. Cushla walks on the beach with her dog and listens to audible books and podcasts. Reconnecting with herself. Always remember you are always the same person no matter where you are. Every day you choose what you focus on and same days this can be hard. Forgive yourself when you have those days that just don't work out like you thought it would. Be kind to yourself. Don't expect yourself to be superwoman. Take the opportunities that do come. Ep 70: Running - It's cheaper than Therapy
Running as Therapy – Show Notes Why running is cheaper than therapy. Why do you do all this long-distance running? For me running is so much more than just a sport, a way to keep fit. It is a way of life. It is what I have used for my therapy. It has literally saved my life. Why running is so powerful as a means of mental health. Movement in nature is the key point. You find out so much about who you are and what you are capable of. It helps you overcome the chatter that you have going on constantly in your brain. When I go running that chatter slows down. It takes about 20 minutes to get rid of the day's grind then once you start to connect with your body and nature, your mind and your processes start to clear. It is a wonderful time for reflection. It is a very powerful mechanism to help find balance. We are living in a very artificial environment. This is not how our ancestors lived. We are disconnected from our true nature. How blue light is affecting us. Inundated with messages from people all around the world who are struggling with mental health issues and massive challenges. It is a privilege to hear these stories and try to help them. I have tried to share with people the honest journey that I go through; the highs, the lows, the challenges. I think people are hungering for real human connection. With our run training we start with the mindset, the motivation and helping them with their mental struggles before we get onto the nuts and bolts of running. We can help them on a much deeper level. Wanted to share the back story and why I say running helped save my life. In my early 20s I was in an abusing controlling relationship. I was in a constant state of being pushed beyond my limits physically and being constantly told that I was useless. Went from being an equal partnership to being controlled completely. My mindset was all about survival. Talks about her horrendous journey across the Libyan desert in which her relationship unravelled. It took a long time to recover physically but the mental scars left her a broken person for a long long time. It took running to put her back together. The Marathon de Sables. Surrounded by positive people that she hadn't been for years. She found like minded wonderful crazy people. She felt encourages and confident. Did really well in the race and then wanted more and more. I wasn't as useless as I had been told. Running became my therapy and hence the title of the podcast. What followed was 25 years of mad adventures. Had grown up in a family that valued mental and physical toughness. Weakness was not tolerated. Took me years to find my way back. Running has given me so much. I learned so much about what I am capable of. I can overcome my fears. I learned team work, I learned how to market myself, to speak, business, leading with a vision. Having good daily ways of coping and de-pressurising ourselves. If you are facing mental health issues, if you are in a difficult relationship etc, you are not alone. There are lots of people going through a lot of things and finding strength from each other and in telling our stories. I hope this gives you the courage to feel not alone and that you can find a way through. I encourage you to take up an outdoor sport. Find your peace with yourself and get back on the road to recovery. Reach out to people who can help you. Find like-minded people. All my life I've felt like a fish out of water in the workforce. I cannot stand to be in an office environment. I felt like it was all my fault because I wasn't getting ahead in my career. But I was always an entrepreneur. I want to be independent, I don't fit in anyone else's square. I like to say I am unemployable. It doesn't mean we are lazy, or dumb, or there is something wrong with us. It just means that we haven't found our tribe yet. Find your tribe who will help you be the best version of you that you can be. Never, ever, give up. Fail, fail fast and keep going. Never stop. S1 Ep 65Ep 65: Paul Pritchard - Cutting Edge Extreme Rock Climber who suffered a traumatic brain injury
Paul was an extreme rock climber and mountaineer from the UK. His adventures took him from Europe to the Himalayas, the Karakoram to Patagonia, Baffin Island to Australia On Friday the 13th of February 1998 a TV-sized boulder falling from 25 meters inflicted such terrible head injuries that doctors thought he might never walk or even speak again. Being in hospital for a year gave Paul the impetus to write his second book: The Totem Pole in 2000. This narrative about his personal journey through hemiplegia also won the Boardman/Tasker prize and the Banff Mountain Book Festival Grand Prize and was translated into four languages. Nominated for the Banff Prize, The Longest Climb followed in 2005. He has continued to lead a challenging life, climbing Kilimanjaro, caving, sea kayaking, river rafting and, in 2009, lead rock climbing again. Paul rode a recumbent trike through Tibet to Mount Everest and, in 2016 he finally climbed the Totem Pole, 18 years after his accident. His latest journey was the 2152 km World Expeditions Lowest to Highest Expedition. Paul has spent his time since the accident in contemplation of the hemiplegia which has robbed his right side of movement and continues to play tricks with his speech and memory. He sees the accident as a precious gift and describes it as the best thing that has ever happened to him. He is a passionate believer that without the mountains he climbed, and moreso the Totem Pole accident, he would not have learnt some crucial life lessons. Those lessons learned in the mountains got him through a harrowing injury, and the painfully slow recovery process has engendered a life lived in the moment. "I use them still, repeatedly, each day of my second, radically different life." When he won the Boardman/Tasker Award for mountain literature in 1997, with his book Deep Play, he spent the prize money on a world climbing tour that found him in Tasmania climbing a slender sea stack known as The Totem Pole. It was here that all he had known before was turned on its head. S1 Ep 63Ep 63: Heather Hawkins - Adventure, Resilience & Longevity Mindset
At 41 - with two teenagers and a contentedly unadventurous life - Heather Hawkins made a doctor's appointment. Diagnosed with stage one ovarian cancer, within nine days she had surgery to remove an 18cm tumour, and a full hysterectomy. Instead of chemotherapy, she chose a non-invasive surveillance treatment. The experience reignited Heather's adventurous and invincible spirit. At 47 she pulled on an old pair of shorts and runners and struggled to the end of a 4km mothers' day fun run with her kids. Five years later she has 17 marathons and 3 ultra marathons under her belt, including the North Pole Marathon and the extraordinary World Marathon Challenge - a gruelling seven marathons in seven days on seven continents. She topped that off by trekking 1700km in the thin air of Nepal's Great Himalaya Trail. And she's only just getting started ... 'Heather's courage is immeasurable. She has unstoppable conviction and an energy that inspires and amazes me' - Robert de Castella - AO MBE, Australian Former World champion Marathon Runner In this interview Lisa digs deep beyond the glib facts of Heather's adventures to find out what makes this lady tick, how she managed within just 5 years to go from being totally sedentary to a full on extreme ultra runner, to run in all four corners of the world. S1 Ep 60Ep 60: Ian Walker - Paraplegic Handbiker - Ultra distance Athlete
Ian Walker was an avid Football fan , referee and coach but in early December 2006 his life took an unexpected turn. Until then he was running marathons and was a nationally ranked football (soccer), referee. On that Wednesday morning he got on his road cycle and went for a ride during which he cycled head first into the rear of a truck and trailer resulting in me suffering a spinal cord injury at T3/4 (mid thoracic) level and requiring a wheelchair for mobility. This was a huge body blow, being no longer able to use his legs. However life must and does go on and he soon realised that this was his new normal and it was better for me to get on with life. The issue for him was to replace my running with another activity. He discovered handcycling and fell in love with it as it enables him to continue with his love of long distance physical exertions. Since then he has successfully completed the TCS New York City Marathon and Buller Gorge Marathon twice each and the ASB Christchurch City Marathon once. He now lives his life to the following creed 'do not let what you cannot do stop you from doing what you can'. This is, he believes, a mindset that all can adopt as life is what you make it. S1 Ep 59Charlie Engle: Extreme Endurance & Longevity Lessons from Running Across the Sahara
Charlie Engles is definitely one of my all time great heroes. His life has not been without it's dramas and failures but he is undoubtedly one of the strongest human beings of our times in mind and body. He is one of the most accomplished ultramarathon runners in the world and author of the riveting memoir Running Man. Engle has a track record of winning or placing in many of the toughest endurance foot races across the globe. He has raced in jungles, summited high ranging mountains and volcanoes, and traversed large expanses of deserts through sand storms. Among his most notable races in the United States is the Badwater Ultramarathon which he has run 7 times placing usually in the top 5. Beginning in the 1990s into the early 2000s, Engle competed in the Eco-Challenge series put on by Mark Burnett (the creator of the wildly popular CBS television series, Survivor). The Eco-Challenge took Engle to Borneo, New Zealand, and Vietnam. The list of Engle's international races is long, but he is most well known for running across the Sahara Desert, from coast to coast, in 2007. Engle's historic and record setting journey was documented in the film Running the Sahara, narrated by Matt Damon. He was joined by two other runners: Ray Zahab of Canada and Kevin Lin of Taiwan. This transcontinental run through deep sand and politically unstable countries remains one of the premier accomplishments in the ultrarunning sport. The runners completed over 4,500 miles, averaging over two marathons per day, for 111 consecutive days. Engle's motivation to run and tackle adventure to such extreme lengths stems from his battle with addiction to drugs and alcohol. Sober since July 23, 1992, he has credited a large part of his sobriety to the purposeful devotion and emotional release he experiences while running. She has also run two 100 milers - the Zion 100 and the Hubert 100. Natashas journey has not been as easy one but it has been an empowering one. S1 Ep 53Dr Bill Andrews: Telomere Science & Anti-Ageing Breakthroughs from Nobel Prize Research
Dr Bill Henry Andrews, Ph.D. is an American molecular biologist and gerontologist whose career has centered on searching for a cure for human aging. Andrews is the founder and president of the biotechnology company Sierra Sciences. Aging is a complex and difficult topic that has been the centre of attention of many scientists for centuries. That's also what Bill Andrews, Ph.D. has made his challenge to solve. Aging isn't an accident. We age because our telomeres get shorter and our cells age. Every time our cells divide, our telomeres get shorter and our cells age. Aging is also the cause of a lot of diseases. Research suggests that control of the telomere length has the potential to treat many diseases linked to aging. This is what SIERRA SCIENCES group of scientists led by Dr Andrews has been working on for the last two decades and is close to finding cures that will change the way we live our life forever. A number of products using their breakthrough techology are already on the market and more powerful ones are in clinical trials. In the lab they have already made immortal cells that never age or die at Harvard university has already reversed aging in rats and now the human trials are about to get underway. You won't want to miss this cutting edge research. If you want to live a long and healthy life then you will want to hear what Dr Bill, Nobel prize winning scientist has to say. Dr Andrews was also one of two scientists featured in a netflix documentary called "The Immortalists" which follows their pursuit of the fountain of youth. S1 Ep 52Dr Susan Oldfield: Functional Medicine Insights for Health Optimisation
Dr Susan Oldfield hails originally from England and completed her medical training in the UK at UCL medical school, obtaining MBBS. After this she went on to complete a Diploma in Family Planning as well as a Diploma in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, whilst completing her GP training and gaining the qualification MRCGP in the UK. Her family and her decided to move to NZ in 2004. She then obtained GP qualifications in NZ, FRCGP. Since then Susan has been working as a GP in a busy urban practice in New Plymouth. She decided to pursue her interest in Integrative Medicine as she feels that combining a conventional approach with a more holistic approach provides clients with the best of both worlds. Because GP consultations are so time-limited, it is difficult to investigate problems in depth. With more time and an integrative approach, Susan is able to add much more to a consultation. In this interview we discuss why the conventional medicine model wasn't working for her anymore, what an "Integrated Practitioner" means and what she sees coming in the future in the world of medicine, health and wellbeing.

S1 Ep 50Ep 50: Run & Health Coaches Neil Wagstaff and LIsa Tamati - Checking in your body before training
Run Coaches Lisa Tamati and Neil Wagstaff talk about using a checklist to check in with your body everyday and learning to gauge from that your body's preparedness for your training sessions. Training programmes shouldn't be arbitrary but rather take into account your daly performance ability according to your ratings on different aspects of your life. For example how do you rate your hydration, your sleep quality and time, your stress levels, your nutrition today etc etc They teach using the data to assess your ability on a day to day basis. We don't live in a vacuum and most of us have other stressors that have to be balanced in our lives. Learning to understand our body's signals and rhythms will mean we get better fitness results not to mention more health benefits. If you would like to get a copy of the PDF checklist mentioned in this podcast. Please email [email protected] We would also like to thank the sponsors of this show. S1 Ep 46Ep 46: Molly Sheridan - Adventurer, Ultramarathon Runner, Author, Entrepreneur
Meet my wonderful and inspiring friend Molly Sheridan of Reno, Nevada. Molly and I met while running the Badwater Ultramarathon through Death Valley, then again the La Ultra 222km at altitude in the Himalayas. She is a truely inspiring woman with an inspiring story. At 48 years old Molly entered her first marathon. Four weeks into training she injured her foot and was told that she was too old to be running. Taking her own advice, Molly corrected her training, mailed her finish-line picture to the doctor who told her she was old, and decided to challenge herself. As a novice runner, she entered the Rio Del Lago 100-mile Endurance Race. Traversing 100 miles non-stop through northern California, she discovered her love of endurance running, her youthful mind and her adventurous spirit. In the past 7 years, Molly has run over 50 ultramarathons. In 2009, she completed the extreme running event Marathon Des Sables (MDS), a seven-day, 150-mile stage race across the Sahara Desert. Eight weeks later, Molly completed the 135-mile, non-stop, Badwater Ultramarathon. An invitation-only event, Badwater is considered the toughest footrace on the planet. It begins at Badwater, Death Valley, the lowest point in the continental U.S., and ends at Mt. Whitney portal, a 13,000-foot vertical ascent. The documentary "Molly's Run," chronicling her Badwater run, for which she received the coveted buckle for finishing under the 48-hour time limit. Molly is the first American woman to attempt and complete La Ultra-The High ultra-marathon, a 138-mile non-stop footrace in the Himalayas. La Ultra begins at 14,000 feet, with climbs to 18,000 feet over two passes. The race culminates in the Morey Plains on the border between China and Pakistan. Even though the India Government stated that the race was physically impossible to complete, Molly completed the race August 13, 2011. Molly is featured among the "Women Who Move" in Women's Running magazine; on Adventure Woman Radio, Nevada Public Radio KNPR, The Christian Science Monitor; and in the Las Vegas Review-Journal. As an owner of Desert Sky Adventures, a race management company in Las Vegas, Molly encourages others to walk and run for their health. She also speaks to audiences across the country on her exploits and the benefits of running for health and continues to run adventure races and ultra-marathons around the globe. In this interview we discuss Molly's adventures, the successes and failures and why you should still push your limits even when you are 61. We would also like to thank the sponsors of this show. S1 Ep 44Ep44: The importance of a daily Breath focused practice
In this episode Lisa discusses proper breathing technique and why it is so very important for health. The benefit list is long. But most people in our modern society don't breath properly i.e. diaphragmatic breathing for a number of reasons. The benefits Proper breathing helps with: relieving anxiety, stress and tension can stop panic attacks Helps our psychological state and helps us to control our emotions and change our emotions. Helps detoxify the body. Helps to optimally oxygenate the body and all its organs which helps with healing, longevity and health in general. Leads to more inner peace, focus and mind and thought control. Helps athletes to optimal performance in their sports. strengthens the important diaphragm muscle which tends to weaken as we get older. Breathing only in the upper chest stimulates the panic receptors, breathing into the stomach activates the calming receptors there and activates the parasympathetic nervous system. Using the diaphragm muscle helps massage and move the inner organs and helps with digestion and detoxification. Helps you control your anger, fear and anxiety to face more and bigger challenges without freezing or panicking. Can help lower the release of stress hormones cortisol and adrenaline in the bloody stream. Stop overuse of the upper chest muscles and intercostals (which happens when we just breath into the upper 1/3 of our lungs). This can lead to tight and shortened muscles in the neck, shoulders and chest. Deep diaphragmatic breathing helps us deal with pain and breath through it. When we stop breathing or hold our breath because we are in pain, it gets worse. Diaphragmatic breathing strengthens your lungs, it doesn't increase lung capacity but makes them stronger and strengthens the primary breathing muscles. S1 Ep 43Ep 43: Mal Law - Adventurer, Philanthropist, Trail Running Maniac
Mal Law is a living trail running legend. His life philosophy is summed up in this one sentence. Dream Big. Live Big. Do Good. Inspire People. These are the beliefs that drive his passion for 'adventures with a cause'. From early childhood he devoured stories of great adventurers and explorers and always dreamed big and imagined great adventures of his own, but until quitting a successful market research career in 2008 he had lacked the self-belief to actually live big. That all changed when the idea of running New Zealand's 7 mainland Great Walks back to back in just 7 days came to me out of the blue. It was a hugely audacious challenge; one that nobody had ever attempted before and it would push him as a self confessed humble 'weekend warrior' type athlete, to the very brink of his capabilities. But he had a special reason for wanting to attempt the unthinkable; what many said was the impossible. He wanted to do good by raising a serious amount of money for a charity close to his heart, Leukaemia & Blood Cancer NZ, because as a 9-year old he had lost his older brother to this cruel disease. And against the odds I succeeded. What's more he discovered that in sharing his adventures he could inspire people to push their own boundaries and tackle their own 'personal Everest'. Since then he has dreamed up, planned and completed lots more epic adventures and has raised almost $800,000 for charity. He has defied the odds and refused to let his limited athletic prowess define who he is or what I he is capable of. He continues to push his personal boundaries and through writing, film-making and public speaking he continues to tell stories that inspire people to believe, as he does, that ordinary people really can achieve extraordinary things. His most famous and audacious adventure was to run 50 marathons in 50 days doing 50 mountains in New Zealand. This huge adventure nearly broke him and he had to change the goals along the way due to injuries but in true nature he persevered as best he could and the film from this mission has now travelled with the Banff Mountain film festival all over the world. He had over 300 people involved, the logistics were huge and the project planning immense. It was a project that he admits nearly broke him and he has never quite been the same. We discuss being "breakable", we discuss the hell hole of depression after huge projects like this, we discuss burn out and how to find balance and joy again in life. Mal is now inspiring other trail runners through his Wildthings trail runner club and you can join that here www.wildthings.club or find more out about Mal go to www.malcolmlaw.co.nz We would also like to thank the sponsors of this show. S1 Ep 41Ep 41: Dr Lior Rauchberger from MyDNA.life talks DNA testing for personalised health
Dr Lior Rauchberger talks in this interview about the future of personalised health care through the use of DNA tests. Simple swab tests can now reveal how your body will uniquely respond to some medicines, what you eat and drink, and how you exercise. MyDNA is helping move healthcare from offering solutions that work for most people, to finding what is best suited to your body. Less 'one-size-fits-all' advice, more that's tailored to fit your body. It's personalised health and it's very exciting. No longer do you have to take a stab in the dark as to what works best for your genetic make up. The experimenting can stop, the less than satisfactory results that plague many of us. Questions like why do I put on weight when my friend doesn't even when I do more exercise and eat less. Why does one guy respond well to weight training and builds big strong defined muscles and another doesn't. Why does one medication work for one and not for another. DNA testing can tell us some of these reasons and more are being revealed every day as the research finally catches up. Find out from Dr Lior Rauchberger what's in store for our futures and how you can personally benefit. S1 Ep 41Ep 41: Chris McDougall Author of Born to Run pops in for a fireside chat
Chris McDougall is the world wide best selling Author of Born to Run and Natural Born Heroes. Two books that have revolutionised the running world and bought to the fore the discussions around human endurance, the history of running, the ability of people to run incredible distances and the barefoot running revolution. In this fireside chat we discuss how he writes his incredibly entertaining and intricately woven stories despite have ADHD. How he manages to sit still long enough to get anything down and what impact the stories he has shared have had on millions of readers around the world. Trained as a foreign correspondent for the Associated Press, Christopher McDougall covered wars in Rwanda and Angola before writing his international bestseller, Born to Run. His fascination with the limits of human potential led him to create the Outside magazine web series, "Art of the Hero." Born to Run is currently being made into a feature film starring Matthew McConaughey. The book - "Born to Run" was about a Hidden Tribe of superathletes, and the Greatest Race the World Has Never Seen. It was a 2009 best-selling ethnography. The book has sold over three million copies. Natural Born Heroes: Chris in this book travels to the Mediterranean, where he discovers that the secrets of ancient Greek heroes are still alive and well on the island of Crete, and ready to be unleashed in the muscles and minds of casual athletes and aspiring heroes everywhere. After running an ultramarathon through the Copper Canyons of Mexico, Christopher McDougall finds his next great adventure on the razor-sharp mountains of Crete, where a band of Resistance fighters in World War II plotted the daring abduction of a German general from the heart of the Nazi occupation. How did a penniless artist, a young shepherd, and a playboy poet believe they could carry out such a remarkable feat of strength and endurance, smuggling the general past thousands of Nazi pursuers, with little more than their own wits and courage to guide them? McDougall makes his way to the island to find the answer and retrace their steps, experiencing firsthand the extreme physical challenges the Resistance fighters and their local allies faced. On Crete, the birthplace of the classical Greek heroism that spawned the likes of Herakles and Odysseus, McDougall discovers the tools of the hero—natural movement, extraordinary endurance, and efficient nutrition. All of these skills, McDougall learns, are still practiced in far-flung pockets throughout the world today. S1 Ep 38Ep 38: Barefoot Ted's wild adventures
Many have come to know about Barefoot Ted through the pages of Christopher McDougall's best-selling book Born to Run Barefoot Ted spent over a decade mastering natural running techniques, and is an accomplished athlete known for self-experimentation and testing his natural human capabilities. He is founder and president of LUNA Sandals, the adventure sandal company based in Seattle, and Solowheel Seattle, the one-wheeled urban transporter company he started in 2014. In 2003 Barefoot Ted McDonald was on a seemingly simple mission: to learn how to run pain-free. That simple desire led him down a rabbit-hole of a quest to learn as much as he could about natural running form, the natural selection of footwear, and the evolution of human movement. On his journey he re-discovered that the human body is not broken by design – humans have an amazing capacity to move well solely with their own equipment – their bodies. As he learned more about the natural selection of footwear in human cultures, he kept finding the simple sandal as the footwear of choice for many cultures past and present. This fascinating quest into the world of movement, running, and simple footwear led him to a man named Caballo Blanco and into the Copper Canyons of Mexico in 2006; the story of which is famously chronicled in Christopher McDougall's best-seller, Born To Run. Nowadays Barefoot Ted heads up a minimalist shoe company called Luna Sandals based on the sandals used by the Tarahumara Indians in Mexico. He is also a proponent of the solowheel and believes this relatively new way to get around will become a phenomenon. S1 Ep 26Ep 26: Mental Resilience & Decision Making for Longevity: When to Quit vs Persist
This podcast is on a topic that I have struggled with thought it something that perhaps many of my listeners will also find hard. How do you know when it's time to quit on a project, relationship, business or sporting ambition. We all know the old adage "Quitters never win and winners never quit." But this isn't true and is far too simplified for this complicated world we live in. Winners, I purport have quit many many times, the key is they didn't stop going for their goals they just rearranged and changed things. Being flexible in the face of adversity is key. In this podcast I give a simple framework to work through when deciding whether to continue on a given path or when the cost of continuing isn't worth the investment and is causing you to lose out on other opportunities.

S1 Ep 25Ep25: Why Inner Work Is as Important as Physical Training for Longevity with Lisa and Neil
Exercise physiologist Neil Wagstaff and Professional Ultra marathon athlete Lisa Tamati talk about why it's important to work "in" and not just work "out". Working "in" is all about lowering your stress hormones in the body (cortisol and adrenaline) and helping your body get fitter with less stress effects. If you are struggling with adrenal fatigue, are tired or exhausted and overstressed then piling on HIIT workouts and long cardio sessions can often be more detrimental overall to your health than working on sessions that increase your wellbeing. Working "in" training means doing exercise and meditation that doesn't raise the heart rate too much but which help release the "good" hormones into the body and help you recover faster and relax. Most of us need to de-stress it's a common complaint in our hectic world so maybe instead of that hard workout you had planned it might be better for your overall health to do yoga, pilates, stretching, a brisk walk or some breathing exercises and meditation. When you lower stress hormones your body is also more likely to release stored fat and it inihibits storing more fat from the food you eat. So although it might seem counterintuitive to do a gentler workout it might actually over time help you lose more weight, it will definitely help your sense of wellbeing and your ability to train hard on those other days.

However that wasn't the end of the story. Allan followed up at the International Association of Ultra runners (IAU) 24 Hour World Championship in the Netherlands on 11 & 12 May 2013 by accomplishing 203.919 km in the 24 hour period, then in December 2013 Allan ran for 86 hours, 11 minutes and 9 seconds without sleeping. In that run she broke the previous women's world record of running without sleep (which was 486 kilometers) reaching 500 kilometers. She was running to support the New Zealand Spinal Trust.
